"It is my birthday tomorrow. 53. I will be 53 years old. How are you feeling? All 53 years. I'm because I'm taking my kids to camp. No pickleball this weekend. That's just going to get me just going to get me more ornery, screaming at people to get off my lawn. Because that just makes me an old man. Not what I said. What? I don't have my weekly pickleball. Thank you, Jay billis. Yesterday. Slagging on pickleball. It's just something we could beat J billis and pickleball. He's got the length. He's long, rich. The issue with pickleball for tall, big time problems. No, you're supposed to just hit it. Hit it in the kitchen. And you can step into the kitchen after it's bounced. You can get in there, but if you keep it low, low, it's low is death in pickleball if you put it high, you can just like this. Come right down. I mean, if you hit it high, it's a problem. Certainly if you try to lob it over to an issue. But if you go low, it's tough. It's tough. Rich, you know, certainly if a man of a certain age, we talked to you last week, we kind of touched on a pickleball story that you didn't hear, and then I remembered that we never got back around to it. So really quickly, in Pittsburgh, there was a story that a grandmother named Meg burckhardt had sent her daughter a picture. She went looking for a pickleball game in Pittsburgh, went up to a court, found a couple guys jumped in the game with him. She texts her daughter that me and the guy in the green shirt kicked the other two guys butts. And then she start wondering why people were asking for pictures. She's like, well, she just thought because she won the pickleball game. That's why they want the pictures. It turned out that the guy in the green shirt that was her teammate was minka Fitzpatrick. Hey. And the guys that she beat were Alex high Smith and TJ watt of the Steelers. Okay. And she had no problem. Make a Fitzpatrick is on our radar screen to join us soon. We're going to have a chat. So there are men a certain age. Aren't they too? Very young. So TJ watch playing pickleball? TJ what? Damn it. Alex hi Smith. Another big difference Patrick, is he playing pickleball? He and Meg one. Exceptions to every rule, rich. You can have your make if it's Patrick's, I'll take coach K look at that. Yes. And no clue who they were. So she and menka, she doesn't even get up to TJ's shoulder. And the text she sent to her daughter was so I rolled up to north park tonight to jump in a pickleball game, started playing with these guys, had no idea who they were. Last game the guy in the green shirt and the other two that everyone else wanted to take our photo. And so her daughter tweeted that out on June 11th to which TJ watt responded, Meg was serving the capital letters hate. We had trouble all day. I'm telling you, you get a certain serve hit you in pickleball. It's very difficult. It's very difficult. You would not last very long playing pickleball. So the winner was of a certain age. You wouldn't. It's a very, it's a significant workout. I think you would tap out. The court is very small. Okay, great. I've never played. I'll beat you. Great. Terrific. Let's do it. Let's see it. Let's do it. It's better doubles though. Just pickleball one on one. Let's do it. I do not want Mike as a partner in anything. Let's do it. Honestly can't do anything. Honestly, you choose who you want..

"You again. Talking about the live. Mike talking about this pittsburgh steelers next opponent that one being these cincinnati bengals on the heels of that crushing loss to the las vegas raiders. Yes i know. It's hard to find a little bit of positives right now but that's exactly what we're going to do in today's show. We always look ahead to the next opponent and figure out some positive and why the pittsburgh steelers will be victorious in cincinnati. Bengals first and foremost looking at this week's matchup. I think the most important thing to keep in mind the pittsburgh steelers should be considerably healthier this week against the bengals than what they were against. The vegas raiders. Now promos with last week's game and one of the reasons. Why were so positive is there wasn't all these factors wing against the steelers. We didn't know about these injuries until friday and they continue to leak through into saturday our sunday. Excuse me afternoon. When the steelers and raiders eventually played on the positive side here. Joe haden devon bush and even tj water all expected to be back. It kind of sounds like all three should be back in a. That's what they're used to. Playing one hundred percent of the snaps. We will of course see those status kind of go on throughout the entire week. So yes we may want to hold her breath right now. But on the surface the pittsburgh steelers will be healthier when they had into this matchup with the cincinnati bengals. The second thing that i think is extremely important here to throw is that joe borough was rattled the last time the pittsburgh steelers faced off against him in that one and only matchup before he had that horrific knee injury a year ago and on top of that. The bengals oftens of line. Wills are still there. joe borough was relentlessly. Beat up a week ago by the chicago bears. Of course pick six him. Just taking interception off. Interception of joe borough everything just doesn't seem quite right with cincinnati and until they fix their offense online. I anticipate that continuing to be the status quo. Getting tj watt back in the lineup having cam hayward of course doing what he's been able to do these first. Couple of weeks. Melvin ingram. we've seen him make a huge impact for the steelers. and of course. Alex highsmith is applied. Some pretty good pressure on his part as well. This steelers front seven should be able to recap acc in that backfield rattle joe borough once again. Continue to get him off his game during those interceptions which is something. He did quite often when he was in the lineup. Of course the steelers did fall to the bengals late last season. I can't even remember that. Quarterback's name i don't even know if he's in the league anymore but of course the steelers losing to their backup quarterback a year ago when it was a it was a tough pill swallow in the worst games. I think i've ever seen the steelers. And ben rothlisberger play but thankfully they're not in cincinnati. It is not the freezing. Cold of winter is heinz field. And they'll be able to kind of take a breath relax a bit. They have to play the game. First and foremost they have to play their game and not do what they did against the vegas raters. But everything is there for the taking. Like i mentioned this pass rush should be able to wreak a little bit of havoc in the backfield and what that should lead to is the steelers linebackers and they're secondary being able to force turnovers. Still of course have not had an interception yet on this young season. Two games in zero interceptions. Nothing for joe haden. Nothing for being fitzpatrick seemed goes cam sutton at the list. Goes on in kind of anticipate that to street coming to an end. This game we know. Of course how good the steelers defense is so smacking jober around a little. Bit shooed can lead to some of those turnovers that we really haven't seen despite how good the defense has played kind of anticipating on that level. Where the defense defensive players make some place fly around get the ball back and let the offense at play with a little bit less kind of kind of feel better field. Position is basically what i'm trying to say be able to move. The ball shorter distances. Because we know how much steelers offense has struggled. Two weeks into the year past that defensively. I think there's a quite a few things. Steelers will be able to do and continue their success against the bengals which we've seen in recent years first and foremost patterson pass pass rushers past the defensive backs being able to turn turn bad throws into turnovers. I just think the steelers match up well against the receivers and tight ends and running backs of the cincinnati bengals do. I anticipate them to be able to like mismatch them in dominate them physically. Obviously not this is the. Nfl players are all up to the same level. The same standard but for this game specifically. I just kind of like how the steelers defensive backs lineup with the bengals receivers and of course joe mixing out of the backfield bengals really. Don't have that big play tight end that you have to worry about the have three really. Good receivers and tyler boyd you. She plays pretty well. Against the steelers t higgins has never really done anything against this team Jomar chase of course kind of the new wrinkle. But he's not kind of set the world on fire by any means. I think the steelers have the manpower to slow down. This receiving core this tight end group and the guys like joe mixing. They have in the backfield. There just really. Isn't anything completely jumping off the paper. That worries me.

"Went back to his position. He had played last season at right. Tackle dan moore junior fourth round. Pick rookie left tackle. He looked like a turnstile a couple of times against buffalo. If they're going to attack the steelers it's going to be on the edges. I just feel like that's where their weaknesses lie. You don't yes you can get pressure up the middle. I'm not saying that they're perfect in that area. But if the if there's a matchup issue it's going to be on the. It's going to be on the edge primarily against the rookie left tackle. But dan more improved a little bit in the second half but it. Yeah if you're looking for advantage there it is awesome. I'll tell you why hopefully yanni walkway stays healthy. Then it's ready to go because it was fun to watch on. the raiders. Finally have a pass rush after about three years of of just crying over coolmax so i'm excited to hear you say that it might be facing. Some weak tackles next week. I'm excited but yet sorry. Like where have you seen. Teens have success against them. Obviously it's not very often but is there a weakness in this This defense yob. Yes yet to be very calculated with how you do it though The steelers are elite in on defense. And i'm not saying that as a home or anyone that watches them play their talented from top to bottom and i actually would say they're. This defense is better than last year's last year was a top three unit. When you add devon bush back who towards acl early in the season you bring in joe schober another good coverage Linebacker in the middle. You bring in melvin ingram Who is still wreaking havoc at his age. I i still can't believe you're just sitting there as a free agent. No one wanted him. Alex highsmith second-year pass rusher t. J. watt is a freak. We know that and he deserved every bit of that contract. He earned the arrived. Clun yes In any of guys. I came hayward who he just goes under the radar but he dominates. I mean you go go back. I don't want something fun. Watch go back and watch the steelers bills. Just go on the bills of the ball. Watch game hayward completely steamrolled offensive line. He was living in josh allens lab. It was fun to watch. But if you're going to attack this dealers events you have to get him in sub packages and you actually want to run the football and that's not easy for a lot of teams to do you have two very talented offensive line. That can you don't need those extra blocker so if you can go to four five wide forced the steelers into their dime. That's when they can be run on. They were run on in the waning minutes of the game against buffalo. I'm not really gonna count that as kind of garbage time but still in the past under teeth butler defensive coordinator. That's when the steelers have had issues getting those linebackers off the field. They bring in an extra defensive back they go light. You've if the steelers opponent. Whoever that is in this case the raiders if they can run the football in those packages that's how you slow down the steelers by controlling the clock keeping the defense on the field. And you wear down the pass rush. Because that's their that's their calling card is getting after the quarterback we've got you bring up a pass rush. You brought up guys like nova england. Alex highsmith so i'm kind of curious. You know obviously probably. The biggest subtraction are lost for the for pittsburgh defensive. Probably just raw has to be but depre- so i'm curious you know one of they kinda missing with depre- in what are your thoughts on like mouth. Ingram and now is heisman Replacements pretty high. On week one was any indication. The answer to your question about bud. Depre- what are they missing the answers not much. I mean between ingram and highsmith they. They were putting pressure on the quarterback. The end to pre was a good player. I'm not here to to say anything bad about him. But those two guys in having the the trio of what ingram in highsmith in they rotated them out so that everyone stayed fresh. It was something the steelers fans haven't seen. Because you always had watt depre- and even before that you had guys like lamar woodley and james harrison. Joey porter clark. You always had those two book ends. Never three now. They have three. This is unique. And mike tomlin on tuesday even said that you might even see a situation where all three around the field at the same time. That would be exciting as a steeler fan to see what they do in that package. We haven't seen it yet. But still melvin. Ingram has been in. Mike tomlin in training camp. Cottam a bully and he is. He was literally bullying the offensive line of the buffalo bills. Which isn't a bad line. By the way he's again at the steelers didn't blitz in buffalo. I think they've let's twice. And they were all over josh allen the entire game. They've got pressure with their front for like that. Was it but a you bring up players lost in my opinion the player that they missed. The nose isn't bud. Debris is mike help in the slot. Okay and mike hilton who went to cincinnati. He was a slide. Cornerback he was an unbelievable blitzer off the edge he knew how to time the blitz. I mean almost to perfection. They have not found that nickel. cornerback they. They disguised it in week. One with a rookie seventh round pick. Trae norwood mega. Patrick played in the slot a little bit. They definitely mixed things up in the slot. I don't think they have their answer. I don't think they will mike. Helton is probably the biggest loss. That was my point throughout the offseason with people that were so doubt on the steelers. Like do you not realize how good this defense still is. But they lost do pre. He was down because my mom was was in town to go to a bridal shower that my wife took her to so. My dad was here to watch the game with me. It was fantastic so during the there was times during commercials i would flip over to red zone for him just so he could see what was going on. Otherwise and what do you know. The one time we flip over just in time on a fourth down play to see adam phelan catch a short pass and take it away for a touchdown against none other than my him. So i didn't see anything else in that game to know what kind of game he had i know but depre- had one tackle what had a really low. Pf score tennessee. Titans fans upset about that. And that's why we talk to you because when it comes to the pittsburgh steelers you guys know this team like you know your high school team. So how's everything going my friend. It's going great. We're back in the swing and you know watching college football over the weekend. Getting excited doing some. you know. We're two games into our high school season already. So i mean i feel like man is football season so all we need steelers complete it. So i understand that You've got the nasty words. Scoreless this year So far so good. Man our defenses Pitch the couple shutouts in the first two games. So we're playing a little like seventy six steelers founded a you know i. Well i tell you what the your post your postgame speeches. I would love to hear him. But i would really love to hear game speech. So what i'm going to do here is try to figure out. What were your thoughts when you heard that. Because there's been some people saying that might not be completely true could be a little bit fabricated but if it's true. I'm lovin kevin. That sort of raises his status in the pantheon of great steelers because it just sort of gives that everyman quality even those get eighty million guaranteed dollars man with eighty million. Guaranteed going into your pockets. But the idea that it's time to get back to work with. My boys is very appealing to the fan base. I know that they have a functioning a job to do. And i understand that. They're there for their client and i also understand that if you're an nfl player your your shelf. I don't begrudge these guys for trying to get every dollar that they can but oftentimes really feels like things could be just cleaner and healthier if the agents were removed. Maybe i'm maybe. J. watt coming back to this team in the with the sense though that he has not practiced he has been in conditioning. He has been present the entire time. But how much difference does that make kevin. I will be surprised. If he's visibly out of shape that he is a extremely conscientious of his work habits of i think he's the kind of guy that like. He would never allow himself to enter an nfl game knowing that he was out of shape because he takes care of his body he we just look at it craft work. I see is technique when you look at him as a pass rusher. That's a guy that his drill bet stuff over and over and over and over again he can do it in his sleep. He's a master craftsman and it would shock me if he hasn't been diligent with that work on the side. Now again i understand that. It's not the same as live reps. But i don't know if a guy In his situation needs quite as many live rupp especially since scheme hasn't changed. There's really been no appeal on the defensive side of the football so learning curve. You know that's not going to really be an issue. So i i don't know if it's gonna be mid season form but i don't think it's going to be one of those things where were in the late in the third quarter and we're looking at tj. We're like oh no know. The lay offs is really hurting. Right now ingram. I wonder about a little bit more. You know. I wonder what kind of how many reps can he take Is he gonna be able to. If highsmith can't go as ingram or younger going to be able to play a sixty minutes. That's very interesting and glad you brought that up. "Game against cleveland roberts lane on wide receiver. But there were other times. Alex highsmith did a beautiful job. Indeed coverage on wide receivers multiple times when he would get pulled out of his. You know outside linebacker role into that slot because the steelers warning nickel bundu pre did it. He was actually very good at it. Highsmith was pretty got it and sometimes three four. The steelers would choose to cover that receiver in the slot with terrell edmonds if they wanted the front seven to all be dedicated in the box and they were gonna do something like that. They could put terrell edmonds as the man on the slot receiver. And then either you know have a linebacker drop into kind of a robber zone or or have sent a blitz so it wasn't always in the nickel that you would defend that and also in the dime you have usually have multiple slot defenders cameron sutton was was one of them. That's that's that's some of the exceptions most of the time. The most common offense in the nfl is now eleven personnel which means one tied in one running back. And that means you have three wide receivers and then you're gonna have a slot receiver because just the nature of how it is your most likely you'll have a slot receiver we're gonna we're gonna use that for our first half of the show went through. You know y why. The nickel is used the importance of the nickelback. I really wanted to get in why. The nickelback is kind of a linebacker role and has to be able to defend the rhine and the steelers really get a lot of benefit from players who can also blitz out of that nickelback situation so when we get to take a break when we come back. "Whichever one is playing favorite targets. Um, skill position wise, this team can line up with almost anybody, especially in the division. They they are and they all bring different elements to it. You have the anti There is He's elusive. He led the team in receiving yards. You do let the Latino and catches and of course, chase Slate will lead the team in yards per catch. So they all bring something different to the perspective. But right now, this team does not have that one complete tight end that they're looking for. That can block in and were named catch the ball. But You know these hybrid tight end you see it as more and more in his league anyway, just as teams are starting to get away from the running game. So based on what prior friend Pat Fire move had brought to the equation of it At this point, the Steelers have thought highly of him. They drafted him in the second round, and he is producing And those catches that you saw on Saturday night for his touch. Now they work on those catches every single day. So it was good to see those transition from practice field into the stadium and something about Pat Brown removed. He's never dropped the red Zone touchdown pass in the Red Zone and his whole career. Penn State totally that continues to transition right now, as you saw him two for two on Saturday night that somebody's going to get a lot of trust early on, you protect the ball. You catch the ball inside the end zone, the red Zone that is good stuff, fantasy draft note saying. You're doing what you're doing. What? You're doing a different fantasy league this year? Yeah, it's an auction. Little chilly, different saying, you saying Hey, Well, how How does this league work? Level two league? He's probably gonna have a rough season. Charlie, Let me ask you this. You sat in that you were you were the backup to bend from 05 through 12. Does that sound right? Yes. I was nine of 9 11 years here that I play with him. Yes. Okay, So you know it as well as anybody. And I don't want this to come out wrong because It's certainly not my intention, but let's face it. You know, Ben, Unlike Brady, who treats his body like a temple, you know, I feel like every couple of years. You know, Ben's got to like, wrap it up, and we should all bends in the best shape of his career. All bends this, You know, I feel like this is more of a question than a statement. But I feel like you've been maybe would have been a little bit more diligent earlier in his career. He wouldn't be fending off the end of his career, as he seemingly is now. Is that an unfair statement to how Ben was for you know, years and and it's Brian. Really? Yeah, I think a lot of people just running out outside perspective. You know, they brought that you know, brought these issues to light but watching him every single he's always been a big body type of quarterback. You've always been around 2 50. When you saw them they go. He looks great. He might be to 49. So that's just like, okay, This is great, but he embraced that, so he knew. Okay. I can't change my body. To a certain point on what everybody would like it to be. He worked in those elements. He's lasted 18 years. He hasn't missed many games, you know from 2011 on Um, prior to that he missed a few games which allowed me to play and stay around a little bit. But I think where you see him now, Um, you know, he taking really good care of his body has a really good relationship with Mike Tomlin. And they worked and carved out a plan, especially through our training camp that they give him every third day off. And that has seems like it kept his arms fresh from this point on, so if he can continue in that manner, you know, I think he's you know, he'll show that he still can be elusive. You watch that plate. In the first, uh, it literally in the first drive, Um, in the first quarter that he was able to now move around and make a play, And unfortunately, a lot of people didn't see it Only because there was a nice pass breakups about a lion, but he was able to complete that pass. Everybody wouldn't looking around like, Wow. They've been looks like you can still move around. Maybe this is an added element due to the weight loss, but You're always going to have this conversation into something that I've been talking about for 18 years. Is he still a top 10 quarterback in the NFL? I think so, From a knowledge perspective, but again, it depends on you know, like Is everybody going through their evaluation processes as it relates to, you know who's top tier court quarterbacks? Who are you measuring that against? And I think when you look back, you say the best. Quarterback, You know, people always throw on that occasion equation is Aaron Rodgers and Aaron Rodgers. Quite frankly, he hasn't been back to a Super Bowl since 2000 and 10 the same as Ben Roethlisberger. At that point, So let you know how difficult it is to get back to that championship game and at one another person before he retired with Drew Brees. He hasn't been back to the big game since 2000 and nine so that just lets you know it's tough to get back. In the manner that everybody would like and hope only because it's tough to get back. And then, of course you had to deal with Tom Brady. Whenever you finally did get to the big game. Yeah, that's the problem being in the FC Tom Brady was always in the way this defense was elite last year. Charlie. I mean, and Devin Busch got hurt. And T. J. Watt, who's Who's has been amazing all season long and make a Fitzpatrick, which is the greatest steel of a trade in the history of steels of trade from the Miami Dolphins. I mean this this level, the level stays where it is, in your estimation. It really does. And you know, last year the biggest blow for this team. They lost seven Bush and weak five, but the big blow last year was but to pre and they lost him in week 11 that was tough for them to rebound. Alex Highsmith He played well, coming off the bench is a rookie. They expect them to have a big jump from here. We're year, one year two and he's starting out strong. The addition of Melvin Ingram, he now adds to that rotating lab backer group is really going to create can continue to create that havoc along with T. J. Watt as from a pass rusher perspective, so I think they have all the keys. That they need on the defensive side of the ball Right now. It's just a matter of how does those backups look right now?.

I think we'll see. I mean the garoppolo thing is fascinating because i i agree with you like i do. Think the niners in their heart of hearts. Want to start jimmy garoppolo in two thousand twenty one but you go through history jimmy garoppolo as the starter for his team in september week one four times. He's made it out of september without getting injured once That's scary. And i think the the worst case scenario for the niners that they keep jimmy garoppolo around they pay him the twenty five million dollars and he starts to games go to trae lance anyway Not as maybe the most likely outcome given his history so This very fast in a game of chicken to me Happening with an irish. But i think you made a really good point when it comes to. Who's getting wraps and what that means and High i would expect to me garoppolo at this point to be the week. One starter for the san francisco. Forty niners unless they get crazy train offer. Maybe that'll happen. I don't know but a lot to happen. "Me before the nfl draft that. He's an even better devon white so mike. Parsons is a guy who really stood out to me on thursday night game and you know for the steelers to players really rose above the rest number one. It's chase klay pool. And i love this kid. You watch him last year and he has all of the tools to be a truly dominant number one wide receiver. First of all the kids six foot. Four two hundred forty pounds. He has great hands. He has great speed. He has explosiveness in the open field and he busts out last night and he leads sealers in receptions and receiving yards and just has a dominant first game of the preseason with three catches for sixty two yards. Look at that receiving core and there are so many questions about ben rothlisberger on what he is at the stage of his career. Especially after how last season finished. But you'll get that receiving core and you have deontay. Johnson are true number one wide receiver and the premier player on that steelers. Offense juju smith schuster. You have chased clay poor. Just an embarrassment of riches for the pittsburgh steelers at the wide receiver position that if rothlisberger is half the quarterback that he has been and you have nagae harris and you have pat fryer m- youth as security blanket to kind of take some of that pressure off. You know. this is an offense that while you talk about pittsburgh steeler. Football has always historically been about physical grounded pound football. You look at them this year with all that talent on the perimeter and at the receiver spots they can really put on a show through the air and defensively for the steelers. Was alex highsmith. You'll get the dallas cowboys offensive line and i know that there are a little bit banged up. Lay collins is hurt. Tyron smith has had limited action and it was kind of a scam. Wouldn't crew of that cowboys offensive line when healthy is one of the best in the league but highsmith was downright dominant. Last night he made the cowboys offense. Turnstiles i mean you look at his numbers. He had the three total tackles. He had one sack two tackles for loss. He was always around. the football. high. Smith is a guy that i'm going to be watching and really can't wait to see him take steps in his development in year two but another guy. I'm going to be watching this year. I always do and what i want. To tell. steeler fans is kind of the way i started this show. I understand that. It's the first action of the pittsburgh steelers in two thousand twenty one. It was a nationally televised game. It was against the dallas cowboys. Don't tell me it doesn't mean anything. We all know that means something. Don't draw too much into this game especially when you're talking about i mean think about this okay. Think about on offense offense. You're looking at no ben rothlisberger. Four out of five players on the offensive line or not projected starters. The wide receiving core of juju smith schuster chase klay played. They didn't play that much. No ebro farm youth. It was just the bare bones. Okay just the bare bones on defense the only projected starters you had roberts bullying you had camp sutton and you would probably say that alex highsmith would be a starter as well so when everyone wants to jump to conclusions about this game about these performances and i know that i just ran off all the winners and losers nowadays is about when i when i think about that. I want to say that you know. When i mentioned a winner or i mentioned a loser. It is based solely on their performance in this particular game and i tried to keep it from a very individual tried to keep an individual mindset. Is i tried. Not to generalize the entire defense based on the fact that keith butler doesn't have tj watt out there. he didn't have steph onto it cam hayward tyson malulu devon bush mink of his patrick tyrrell admins joe haden just basically named the entire defense people. So we're all excited clearly. Steeler nation is excited. Our website binds. Your current dot. Com is is literally blowing today. It's great to see people that are back involved in in invested in the steelers again my writer dai crew is as loyal as they come as loyal as they come. I'm telling you what they are people. It's just not. I can't say they weren't off. They're not a great often. 'cause we haven't seen this junior played. The line dead. Last year was not a great office. We'll show group on paper and look who they're relying on. I don't pay for like i'll pay per does not excite me but I can't buy into how they'd get down like how they play at approaching this enough to give me close nothing. They find a way to get over. It opens up. Niger harris is to get it. Gives them to push down the stretch. That's what they need. The i we're gonna find out who makes the run game between for that age old debate. The runner versus the offensive line. If you'd rather have a great runner okay offense because remember matt. Canada is gonna do a lotta jet sweet motion action in all those things. It's gonna look different but it's gonna be about the same and believers smoking houses. I i'm just telling you that you know myles garrett going to go to sleep with a smile on his face the night before they pay pits. Ball's coming right off. The ball is coming out. They're gonna shrink. The field is going to shrink right. Defensively let's get the other side of the ball. Defensively just made a move and brought in. Melvin ingram i to me. i think. There's some overreaction to that move. I think melvin is is physical. He's tough. he has not been healthy lately. He does not have the same burster juice in the production reflected that over the last things and he's he's he's had a great career. He's not better than alex. Highsmith like people have just chocolate. Pushed him right into the starting lineup outs. Heisman is a good young player. he's not he starting like i. I'll be very surprised if alex highsmith is not opposite at tj while he's he's a better player at this point in time in their respective careers. No disrespect to melvin said. A great run a great career. He's just not the same player he was when he was younger. Alex smith is ready to roll. He's a good player right now. Competition brings brings out of everybody so put more gas into the makes let them all could be the mall find their way i'm not opposed to doing.

"I mean, it's never a good time when you have a guy who has always been a little bit persnickety about his offensive coordinators unless they're his best buddy, his golfing buddies right like unless it's Bruce Arians. Was Ben's best friend and also letting them get killed by holding onto the ball too long. He's going to be unhappy. Um, I don't think like you were ever going to have an ideal situation with whoever you were going to bring in to replace Randy Fichtner, who was again another guy you could put in that basket of Ben's body. As a coordinator. I will say this about Canada's offense. It's a lot of pre snap motion. It's a lot of that window dressing. It's a lot of moving the defense around. The priests have to try to see what they're up to. It's going to require Raffles Burger to go under center more, which he said he's willing to do. One thing I will say about his offensive schemes of pit for all that window dressing and all that motion and all the things that did pre snap. You can go and look at pits numbers. It was actually much more of a power running offense than it was anything else. James Connor was lightened up. Defense is not granted. That's with a couple of like draft picks on your offense. They had a really good offensive lineup it, but it is actually an offense that is more based around running the ball. At least it wasn't pit. Than you would think, given all kind of a cute stuff that they would do pre snap Chris final thing for me, and then I want to ask you, you know where the biggest questions on the defense because even if Pittsburgh might have had a down year they've always been known for having these incredibly great defenses. They take the ball away. They sack quarterbacks. They're really hard to beat. So what? What? What will be the M O or, you know, I know they lost to pre right Steve Nelson. One of the biggest questions on defense going into camp depths is the biggest one. I mean, I think that's that's the obvious thing like is Alex Highsmith. So you have t J Watt, right? He's a star. He's a top three defensive player, maybe caught five. If you're going to be less charitable in the NFL does Alex Highsmith and Year to just make the leap right opposite him. I liked it. I liked watching Alex Highsmith in year one. He was a pleasant surprise. Everyone loves the kids love kids work ethic, but Dupri had become a pretty productive player. You've got to match that. You look at this other big time Name on that defense makeup. Fitzpatrick. I think ESPN like you know, executives just named him the best safety and football. I don't even know if I agree with that, but he's really good. Carol Edmonds has been around for a while now opposite him or next to him. He's not very good. He's mediocre. So like there are questions even where there is strength on that defense. There are questions and then you look at guys like campaign word. Tyson Allah wallah. You We have been so good on that defensive line for them and so important in an unheralded role in a 34 defense, both of those guys are getting up there in years at the age where at that position, you're not going to be productive anymore, so They have big names, and they have big talent in certain places. But if if I was gonna boil the questions about their defense down to one word, it would be depth because I just don't think there's a lot of proven depth and they're going to have to have guys either stay healthy and stay productive well into their thirties. And or be very precocious as far as taking that next step in development, or else I don't know if that defense is going to look the way people here think it's going to look Well, two things one. Thank you for giving us some time this morning to go be a dad because I think your kid wants to play. I think he's good in there. He's building some sort of little plane. It's like kind of a too on the nose metaphor. He's unscrewing the bolts, and then the plane falls apart and I feel like like it's sitting on the tarmac right now, and that claims the Steelers and somebody is loosening the bolts, and it might not even make it down the runway. Um Think a lot of people will figure that Baltimore and Cleveland make the playoffs, whichever, whether you put him in one first, the other second And, uh, I mean, I don't think the Steelers are making the playoffs. Here's you know, our guest. Chris is sand. Maybe they're nine and eight. I don't think they're making the playoffs. I think, um Some people are wondering if they'll beat out Cincinnati. That was my That was gonna be. My take is, I wonder if it's more likely the Steelers. Finished behind the Bangles than they actually do likely to make the playoffs. Yeah, I think there's a better chance of that happening. Yeah, I just don't see. I mean everything he laid out. Um, I don't remember what the opening line What's the point spread for week. One. The bills would be favorite, of course, and I think we'd all expect the bills to win that game. Um, everything he laid out. He was he was talking how you know, he was stunned by the leap Josh Allen made in year three. And I didn't expect expect that you would do what he did in here through either. I was stunned when I started watching the Steelers offense. I'm not a lie. I kinda I don't remember if I watch much of them in the first month or two when they get to the point where their unbeaten and then they had that stretch. They were on some primetime games, too. And they play Baltimore that played Washington. I started watching a little bit because I knew they were coming up on the bill schedule. When I tuned in to watch the Steelers on offense. I mean, it was stunning to see what they were doing. They couldn't run the ball at all. No next to zero running game production, and when they through the walls, like Chris said, You're not going to go on. Let's just get the ball out and throw it short. Just two yards. It's it's It's such a game manager. You had no respect for a deep ball. Despite the fact they had some really good receivers, I thought, right. Despite the fact you had some players who can make plays down field, It's like the offense said Okay, either. Ben can't make that throw. And or we can't block well enough for him. Yeah. 1.8 seconds. Two point would get the ball out crossing patterns dump offs in the flat all this stuff, just throw short stuff and I'm sitting there going if I'm pointer and hide Don't have to worry about these guys beat me over the top at all. It's too easy to stop their passing game. Yeah, and on top of that, too, like they add in this running back, who is likely going to take a ton of targets away from those top three receivers, which is You know, you spend some money on receivers they bring back to Drew Smith Schuster. They use a draft pick on Chase Claypool, who I think is a really good receiver. Um Deontay Johnson had kind of a tough season with some drops..

"Throw the ball too much and the pittsburgh steelers will one hundred percent be fine flipping over to the defensive side and one young player for the pittsburgh steelers that also holds. A lot of the keys is one alex highsmith. We know the steelers defense. They're supposed to take a bit of a step back. Losing bud depre- the double digit sack. Man from twenty nine thousand nine. He looked like he was well on his way to doing. Just that in twenty twenty before tearing his acl in that unfortunate accident which really can derail the steelers season at after that the steelers greatly struggled. Alex highsmith was fine in some limited playing time. But of course we know. He's battling an ankle injury as well. Alex highsmith however already looks like he's on a better upward trajectory. Then bud duprey was entering his second year of his career. High smith is a great pass rusher and he's one hundred percent bought in if you looked at pictures of him and videos of him during these offseason workouts with the steelers. The dude is clearly jacked. He's coming to camp larger than he was last year. He looks more defined than he was. He is in peak shape because of it because it just necessarily being heavier and stronger. He'll be better against the run. Alex highsmith if he can answer the questions and develop faster than buddah. Pre did the steelers defense. Shouldn't miss a beat and that goes without mentioning outsize. Miss should never face a double team all year. Long teaching wat- on the other side is going to command. A heck of a lot of attention steph onto it and cam. He are as well. Even tyson allahu allahu when he's out on the field. He deserves at least a chip. That's how good the front seven is for the pittsburgh. Steelers these guys. They're all deserving of being double teamed. and that's kind of the hardest question. Defensive coordinator you just have to ask themselves each and every week. Who are redoubling today. Who we're going to let try to beat us. We know they're not gonna let. Tgi what do that and we know. They're certainly going to do their best to not let steph onto it or cam. Haywar do it. Basically they're going to decide between two and hayward who they're gonna leave single teams all game and then alex highsmith just gets his free one on one rush. Alex smith could absolutely exploded onto the scene. Because of not only has he completely changed his body for the better but he is in one of the cushy jobs there is for an edge rusher in the nfl. He should be excited. He should pin his ears. Back this is going to be very berry fun. Season football for alex highsmith. And if i was an edge rusher in the nfl. I would be extremely jealous of him taking that role he is going to be a stud there and really. I wouldn't be surprised if he was close to as good as bud. Duprey was at least in the pass rush game a year ago. We know how good bud duprey wasn't a rushing attacks so i'm not going to put that level of standard on them but he could be pretty darn good and it is exciting. Another thing. I want to point to as well that is kind of going under the radar is how good the pittsburgh steelers. Special teams are going to be. A lot of people are really talking about this. And i i kinda get it. It's special teams. But it's still a pretty big facet of this game. We know jordan bury the incumbent punter. He usually starts to your pretty well before falling off the rails as the weather gets colder he. he'll have as usual shank punt all of a sudden the steelers like they're on their own forty yard lines all right. This team isn't going to do anything because we're gonna punt the ball away. There's only minute left. There's no way they're going to go ninety yards and score touchdown but then joined bury shanks went off the side of his foot and all of a sudden they just have to go twenty yards and kick a field goal and all of a sudden. We're going over time now. The pittsburgh steelers have a legitimate punning prospect and prodigy and presley harbin. The third him alone changes this team because if the steelers can have the production that the ravens get out of sam cooke holy smokes this defense if they're just playing with nine hundred cushions behind them each and every game that is massive and something. Steelers have greatly missed for a very long time. They need a great punter and they might actually have that guy now after him. Look how many guys the steelers added as gunners and special teams aces throat. The last couple of years yes or no. They lost jordan dangerfield but they backed that up with adding a ton of talent mouse. Killebrew is one of the best special teamers in the entire nfl. It's one of those spots that isn't talked about because once again it's special teams but he is going to replace dangerfield seamlessly we know. Dirk watt is one of the best special teams as well. The steelers added him a year ago. And now you look at the steelers draft picks quincy rochet. He's going to be a special teamer buddy johnson. He's going to be a special teamer. Marcus allen of course. He's been on the team for a couple years now. But he's added some mass. He looked pretty big. He is also going to be a special teamer. You run up and down the defensive lineup. And if they're not starters they have really good abilities to be good special. Teamers look at safeties. Trae norwood's going to be asked to do that. Antoine brooks legitimate starting capable players. Maybe not the best of the best starters but at the very least starting capable players will be on special teams. This unit is going to hunt guys down that he doesn't even mention the guys on offense that offer some stuff in the special teams game. Do you guys remember. Kevin reiter a year ago when he beat out. Zack gentry for some playing time. He was a special teams demon. I remember a couple hits. He absolutely laid out returners after him. Cassius marsh another late season edition. I remember that colts game. He flew down the middle of field. We know his wards when it comes to trying to defend the run as an edge rusher but as a special teams guy. He flies down the field and cracks heads from top to bottom. The pittsburgh steelers are going to have a great of great special teams unit and teams are going to have to travel a very long distance to score points and that is one of the most underrated things to be accepted of. When it comes to the pittsburgh steelers all that being said. I wanna thank you for today's show coming on tuning in with me and you know what i think next week just for the fact of being a good journalist we'll even look at the negatives why okay to be negative about the pittsburgh steelers because guess what until the games are played.
