Toby Harnden Shares a Story From on the Ground in Afghanistan

"You mentioned this story, the prison uprising, Mike spann, a former marine CIA paramilitary. For those who know nothing, give us the story of that incredible event and what that man did. Yeah. It is incredible. And so November 25th, 2001. Two CIA officers walk into this fort called calla jangi, which means literally like fort of war outside mazar I Sharif. Now, backing up a little bit mazarin Sharif had fallen to northern alliance forces, aided by our allies. Our allies aided by the CIA green berets and air force combat controllers and the awesome might have U.S. air power overhead on November 10th. Now, less than a month earlier, Mike spann had been one of 8 CIA officers who landed in the Darius souf valley, aboard two Black Hawk helicopters that had flown in from Kashi Khan about K two, a former Soviet air base that Uzbekistan government had given over to the Americans for this post 9 11 mission. So October 17th, 2001, they land at dropped into the unknown. First Americans behind America. So we are barely barely a month out since 9 11. Yeah. First Americans behind them enemy lines. Now there had been a CIA team called jawbreaker that had landed in the pantry of Ali on September 26th, but that was, you know, relatively speaking safe territory controlled by the northern alliance. But this was enemy territory, Taliban controlled territory. So 8 of them, four of them were paramilitaries, one of those was Mike span. So when paramilitary is somebody who's been seconded, usually from the military and is working in the CIA using their skills for the CIA. Yeah, usually they actually in the CIA sometimes their contractors or people who've been seconded and on some of the other teams that were actually serving members of the Delta force and seals. But the four paramount trees on team alpha were serving CIOs special activities, division. Scott spellman, who was on the cover of the book, he was later became very senior, it was the senior CIA guy on the National Security Council during the Trump administration. He became station chief in Kabul, but then a young officer, but already battle hardened he had been wounded in the battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in 1993. It was a guy called Alex Hernandez, who was the deputy chief, who was a sergeant major, gone full career in special forces and then joined the agency and two case officers, JRC, who was the chief who'd worked with the CIA out of Islamabad in the 1980s against the Soviets for the supply and stinger missiles to the mujahideen and David Tyson who you mentioned at the beginning who was with Mike span on November 25th 2001. So they're in unfriendly territory. This is the Ford of war, walk us through that event. So David was a case officer based in Tashkent and spoke Uzbek almost fluently. And so he's the linguist and the main linguist on the team, although JR, seger also he spoke diary, which was the sort of lingua franca in Afghanistan. But on that day, the team split, there's a big fight, a hundred miles to the east. It expected in Kunduz so the bulk of American forces are there. But the night before 400 Al-Qaeda prisoners had arrived on the eastern edge of mazarin reef to surrender, and it was extremely murky why they were there. They should have been surrendering in Kunduz. And basically, I mean, what I was able to establish almost beyond doubt is that this was a Trojan horse operation. It was a deliberate trap. Yeah, it was a Taliban Al-Qaeda operation to put pretend that for these 400 fighters had surrendered, but in fact they were made up remained armed. They sort of exploited Afghan custom to keep their weapons with them and they were planning an uprising. Because you can have lots of people surrender at once if it's a regular army during the Gulf War, we had thousands of Iraqis surrender at once. When it's irregular fighters, you don't usually get hundreds of them surrendering at the same time. It's a little bit

"Up to three hundred bucks. And six hundred bucks george. Let's go. Hopefully my my veterans the homerun tonight ours. Who is it. Max much in the third inning. Right max muncie in the third inning. Alex hernandez for giving us. Max muncie in the third inning. So that'll do it. Man make sure appreciate put you on hold makes guys are listening on monday at four fifteen another bass for cash contestant and special thanks to owning bringing safety and simplicity to refinance your home owning dot there you go. We liked this music. Yeah i get a lot. You're kind of shows us out right after the whole cash thing you know you just gotta lightens it up like mattress. Yeah so okay. Die rangers tonight. And so we'll see. Max muncie can hit that home run for that gentleman alex hernandez good luck did. Let's see good luck. So we've you know it's crazy to port. We've had one guy win people win but we had one guy the other day clinton who picked when the dodgers had like a rain delay so we were to sneak them in he picked the first sitting and then of course it happened the following day in the first down the next day the day after he had already lost right stakes. Get credit for that. Last speaking about feeling bad so over the weekend i had a little bit of like kind of the sniffles. 'cause my two year old is starting to go started to go to preschool right. So of course didn't take very long but a few weeks for him to get his first. Bout with the sniffles. Right so then. My daughter got it than i got it. Whatever went to the doctor just to check to see what was going on. Just also my allergies have been kicking and cova test so negative blah blah blah. so they just pump. They told me to take a bunch of allergy stuff and also hate so. Keep taking dayquil if you don't feel so great or whatever it is you wanna take w sleep whatever so. I said okay cool. So that's what i was doing. I was taking dayquil and nyquil because it was a little post nasal drip right the little throat stuff going on so all good feeling better and then what happened was i. It was a saturday or sunday. Clinton i dunno or cap. I don't know if any of this has happened to you. Laura greg but i went to go take the dayquil was like. I dunno two o'clock in the afternoon and i took a nyquil by accident. Oh yeah so now. Because when 'cause nyquil is is like take this pass out that's why people take nyquil right isn't it the sniffling sneezing. Coffee head aches fever. So you can rest medicine correct so i was like what do i do because i was going to go work out and i'm like do i work out there to fight through this. Am i going to have a crappy workout like what's going to happen my wife's like well you're not gonna fall asleep while working out and i was like okay then but i tried to stay up for literally like all it took was thirty minutes and i was so drowsy that stop fighting it. I just said. I'm just gonna take a nap and i. I took a nap for like ninety minutes and then felt better than i have a question though now. Dayquil and nyquil are the two liquids different colors. I always think of nyquil is being purply yet. Nyquil green blue and dayquil is like like vibrant blue like but and the labels are different. The label is orange dayquil and like dark blue or whatever for nyquil so just looking at the liquid and going okay no challa rab the bottle off the cabinet and just took the wrong one. They were next to each other. So laura's ever happened to you. Has unfortunately and i was out cold for like a good thirteen hours really. I'll maybe thirteen. I'm really like i'm really bad. Actually really bad like with painkillers are anything but thirteen is excessive. I mean burnett for ninety minutes. That's usually what happens. The people on nyquil though. You're lucky you were able to wake up after ninety minutes. Yeah you usually get knocked out man. Like i'm out like out out so if i want to sleep if i'm like i ain't got nothing to do the next day. That's what i go to really nice to Yeah i mean. I don't i don't like i'm not pushing that okay. I don't want people saying like. Hey laura told me no no for me if i need to go to sleep. That's that's what i need to take. And i'm out longtime george. I give you credit though that you wanted to take the dayquil even though you took the nyquil and then once you realize you took the nyquil you thought i'll fight through it by working out you know i'm like okay. Just this just happened to me like in the last day one of my nostrils was working. I was breathing beautifully at like my left nostril. My right nostril though was completely jammed up. You know what i'm talking about like where one is working in one isn't working so then you cover your nostril that is working and then you try and blow out the one. That isn't working. So having this and i was thinking to myself. Well okay. I mean you get a cold. I'm sure and then. I thought well i don't even know like do we get colds anymore or colds. Okay like can you have a cold or does everybody go. Ooh you got a cold. You must have it. Because i haven't had a cold and i don't know if it's because i've been wearing masks because i haven't shaken people's hands. I'm not exactly sure. But i haven't had a cold in a really long time knocking on wood here. Knock on wood. If you're with me man. Okay it's because everybody's been more hygienic. In the past year and a half just in general in terms in terms of like you know whatever doing like i don't know just interacting with each other if i don't touch you as much we're not going to get as sick. You know what i mean. It's it's pretty awesome. I think it's one of the weird. Like a i don't wanna say bonuses out of a pandemic because there's no real bonus out of something that's been so painful to so many people but like if we all respect that like. Hey guess way if we're not pulling all over each other all the time we're not going to be as sick. That's a win for me george. I'm with you whole heartedly question. But it just was weird. I thought maybe. I was a weirdo. I didn't know if other people have done that. Take nyquil by accident wednesday dayquil but it was not a fun experience but ninety minutes whatever. I was not very often. So i figured what the hell well how about this. Let me ask you could. This is actually a bigger issue which is not just the nyquil versus dayquil. Have you ever taken medication. That was not for you in other words. Like i have a couple of bottles right. And they're sitting in my kitchen but my daughter she also put a bottle of something you know. Maybe she had like an acne thing or something right. So i go over and i'm like oh well this is where my little things are and then i take them and then i'm like wait a second. I don't i feel like the shape. The color i don't know i just and then i read the bottle and took my fourteen year old daughters like acne pill or something. You know what i mean. Have you ever taken the wrong med. No doubt i haven't touch. You haven't taken a cold medication bottle. I'm reading what i'm looking at so dayquil and nyquil you don't read but you've never taken a birth control dayquil and nyquil over the counter medication. So that's a little different. You know like. I don't take those like the family is scary to me..

"And then taking the car and Lena story is we get a really cool. The speech Getting on the plane where she says no I let her in. She lives me this whole time and while Lena saying this car is in the background warning to tell you that she supergirl and it's just a really strong character moment and then car decides not to. This was her chance to take to in a way. This was her chance to take the power and the Lena I'm super girl but she doesn't. Yeah Okay and that's going to be. I think you know it's GonNa play back in you know. My guess is that leader's GonNa find out cards and I have to tell her This you know this season I think. Lena will Vetoed food. They're going to have that kind of the fallout or not fall out. But this kind of discussions talk about leasing coming out and having reconcile themselves to each other other before the end of the season or just come out and that'll be a threat for nick. I don't I don't think we're at a point. Now where it's time leading US Yeah definitely about time. That Lena knows It's it's been a few years now surprise with you. Know How smart marshy is that. She hasn't figured it out yet especially the things that Kara and Alex have. Let Slip Around Lena. And the the the Abilities that car has you know portrayed tried to portray in secret while in Lena's presence like Rush Lake. She seemed oblivious because she wants to be oblivious to it one thing we Kinda skip was I forget was at the beginning They're having in trouble with the plane. It's automated point. There's no pilot and Alex Hernandez leaving I can sixty and she goes to try to fly. That wasn't this wasn't it. Yeah yeah the plane is struck by Purple Lightning purple lightning flying all way around while they bring up a back to mention that lightning is in purple. That light purple lightning is shooting around strikes the plane and the plane goes dead plane crashing end. Lena's she can fix it and she's soon and try and fly it she can train and land it and the car zooms out of supergirl hopes for landed in a way that doesn't discredit creditably. Now and then zooms back in his car Acts like unconscious. Christopher Reeve even the alleyway that will love to just because I love that she did like oh all of a sudden L. Super Girls. Here that's nice weird and everything. Yeah so that was. That was smart her part. But Yeah Lena Moment of knows the something about I feel for Wednesday happened. Yeah and UM on wall as they're here in the base and they they set the the base to self destruct. They're they are trying to find an exit and Lena goes the wrong way to a dead end in car goes away. That seems that it's going to have an exit. The she comes across red daughter cell. And there's Pictures of Kara and Lena in Alex Wchs all over the south next to pictures of supergirl in car. I would have been a good time. Not have been a good time for her to kind of say. Hey this is what's going on like already know about red daughter. They know about you know it would. It would have been a good time for her. Kinda give her the like this is what's going on I am Kerr. I am supergirl You know we know about red daughter. We know that she's working with Lex like and then show her like yeah like he's he's planning some stuff because he's trying to. He's trying to sneak her in as supergirl as red dot and has Kara. This as you know could come up with some sort of plan when supergirl girls. I've is not wearing farm. I think it's really easy thing to start the wait a minute and and so it's very French. Superhero Sleet Sir Sir. The episode where she wears the cloak. She covers her super girls involves. She's not as large this larger than life character. But she's still just doesn't have the plastic on. Looks like that point unless unless they go on with the troop losses hypnotize you. You're all right so let's talk about this end..

"So that's one gives you an Intel's speaking of hot ones and Bill Burr he made a point he got his helicopter license and someone asks him. He was like he this Bill Burr talking Bill Burr that he had done really poorly in school. But what he's so he was like afraid I'm gonna fail because they're flying helicopter involves a degree of. Yeah. Physics and mathematics. I think and he thought he would do poor. Early. And then turns out he did really. Well, he goes my major lesson. There was like if I'm into the subject turns out that I can apply myself much better than I thought I could I grew up where we're academics was a priority. I don't quite sure that same history. But. You know, I developed a life around it around MMA, and I like continuously trying to develop a level of expertise about something. I'm not suggesting attained it I just mean, there's a certain you're ever seen the documentary Jiro dreams of sushi. No, no. So it's a documentary on Netflix. There's this dude he's got like two or three Michelin stars. All he does is make sushi, and he's Mr. you all of his life, teaching us how to make sushi, and he makes it not the same piece every time, but it's sort of like, not many of them and the key is to get it. Absolutely perfect. And he does it day after day after day, they say, it's the I if not the best issue in Tokyo, some some of the best and his whole argument is life is about this. It is about waking up every day and not treating as monotony treating it as a chase for perfection. Yeah. And that sort of had a big impact on me. It's like I'm not suggesting I'm Jiro. I don't you know, that's not. That's not one does not in the point. I'm going to make. But that I would like to believe that I could have the same. I don't treat it like a treadmill? I truly wrote pool to the top of it. And I really I had so many diverse interest growing up that I've focused on something made a life around. It to me is the best guy for Jim beam and saying. Yeah. Well, you know, I'm not as you know, anything about this rotgut next lease. As its subscriber-based. What will we use to gauge the success of an ESPN event in terms of viewership? Now, isn't that a good question? The answer is I don't know. Yeah. I don't know either. I don't even if they don't release the number. It's like Netflix a bunch of networks was like forty million morons like box. Right. Okay. Well, we know stupid people like bird box and all there's a whole lot of them. You know, what you have missed nothing. Nothing. You have you have missed blindfold on you. Have you have missed low-hanging cinematic fruit for idiots is what you have missed. All right. Sounds like something you might something. You might not now that you mentioned that the here's the point though, they only told us that I think was like nearly fifty million people watched it opening weekend. But what does it mean to watch a movie on Netflix like seventy percent ten percent like unless they tell us. We don't really know. I guess I I don't I don't I don't know how to work either Google searches. I guess we we will have the prelims. Yeah. On linear TV, at least that the four five portions. So this case the culminating with Hernandez and Sironi, but. There's no real way to to gauge the success. Like, I mean, unless they put up numbers, which by the way, I think they kind of like having that. Yeah. Freedom to be like, oh, what was the ratings business? We did way better than new. Yeah. We did. Amazing. You hell amazing. It's a secret. Rather not say, yeah. So I don't know. I don't know how we're going to do. It's going to be a great question. I don't know the answer that we're done one more art last one. Here we go. If Reebok leave the UFC alone..

So this the first three or four on the show or pretty much like that everything else is just seeing. Your mouth. I'm not big until I was well, it's pretty no. I mean, I'll I'll I'll use a he for example, which is a little bit kick. Yeah. It's got a little bit of cake, but not nothing like crazy hot like Americans, really, spicy stuff Mexicans. Do it makes against in Columbia. Not really not all that much. I do really like the Tabasco Cipolla sauce that is really Browner usually pretty Pretty good. good. It's really good. But that's not really spicy. So I I shouted out pepper palace shelter and pepper palace. They are a novel. Go novelty, they're specialists in all things heat. So that can be rubs sauces marinades jellies you name it, they make everything and then they also saw everyone else's and I shouted amounts. So they sent me a gift box. This was years ago. And in it are half the things they use on hot ones. So I had this stuff ever had one of which is I still haven't I still use it. It's called one hundred percent pain. It's a tough. It's a tough sled off sled. It is. That's not fun, man. Like runs your food. You there are ways to mitigate it one is by being a man. Two two. For example, there are ways to mix in different wheels or Dareez the soften it. But I I like all the hot sauce you like, and I like one degree more. Yeah. I like a little bit of punishment. But I don't go to the point where I'm like what you see these guys and do their like, swimming, sedating and pouring swam at the check that out. I like a little bit of a runny nose. And that's what I'm saying. And understand that by the way, I did a piece on Chuck Ladele. Maybe I don't know ten or twelve years ago where I went to San Luis Obispo went his house, and he has whole refrigerator door was hot sauce, the different houses. Like what you're talking about every kind, and I was I like hot sauce on as I. Yeah. And he starts just open them in dumping them in his mouth just one after the other dumping them in his mouth and some of them are really hot like I tried to couple of. And I was like that's ridiculous. So you call me the iceman I out the real iceman is like there's the more. Why would you put hot sauces in a fridge? I don't know. He had his whole door. I owned the. Put it in the fridge. Why I just feel like I do not realize if you left it out would stay good for an extraordinarily longtime man never been today. We're learning. I do not know. No. I just toss in Heinz. Yeah..

"Well, I mean it is frustrating. And I I've been in there with Bill tours. Well, because they usually do they have like the family or somebody of the faction is there friend. Yes. And they stand up, and which is like I mean, I get I appreciate the seat. I really do. Get if you're sitting on the on the bleachers on the also you'll see belt. A belt. Also, you have see doesn't do that. They don't put if you're on medium, there might be several media rose. But if you're on the first row of media, there's no one in front of you people just walking by. Yep. Next. Okay. Now that Luke discover hot ones where the panels favorite hot sauce. And why now hang on a second on this one before you start groaning? Have you guys seen this show hot ones? I haven't. Oh my God. I really so here's the dealers this guy. This is the premise of the show. It's changed a little bit over time. But it's basically the same. This gets a YouTube show, this guy the host, Sean sits across from a celebrity could be musician comedian, and we're talking we're talking Allister's, Kevin Hart key Khalifa. Wiz Khalifa Swiss Khalifa. I have seen this. Thumbnail and the premises. They have to eat ten wings. Okay. And each wing the wing sort out, totally mild. Yeah, they get increasingly spicy to the point of the winter like absurdly hot. And it's this amazing show because for two reasons one the interviewer is the interviewer is phenomenal. He does such a great job with prep unusual questions. It's fun. He kind of gets it. He works with the guests. Do he is amazingly prepped? Okay. I I did. I watched a podcast where he talking about his prep. He goes through podcast and reads books, and like fines old on it goes from like their local newspaper when they were in high school in amazing stuff. Right. Then it's like a Japanese game show where like no one wins. Everyone just gets punished physically. It's just how long how long can you last before? Yes. DJ callen. Did it going through three wings?.

"We have a bunch of these ready for you. I will pass this down if you'd like to have some you may. While you are doing that. Let's hear the first question. Let's see rather. Alright. Any while he's doing that? How about this? What's the point of having Dana on stage at the press conferences when he never answers any questions directed at him. He was today. Very much like, yeah. We'll see. What happens you saw that as like inspiring about the future? I saw that as NBA being like your days are numbered. Don't s-. Yeah. I saw it as we'll see what happens. I mean. They know is always the guy that like you ask them like, oh, what's next for this guy? He's like, well, let's see the first fight like, you never likes to go too far ahead, and sort of say anything, but I don't know. I mean, there's some things that that he will. And so there's certain things that you know, he won't answer you can get some answers to some more basic questions and also he's kind of there too. He's he's a presence. First of all you need official up there. I feel like in any prescription you have to have one by rule and also just the sort of guy the conversation because sometime he's like all right? This is enough. I. And sort of moderate the conversation. So I do think, you know, it's it's not pointless to have them up that Loker. What about you? Actually, give more out of him than I do most of the fighters to be honest. I mean, and it's always been that way. Right. Like, it's always been Dana at the moments. You can ask a question, and he used to the bigger difference is used to, you know, talk a lot more. You communicate a lot more. He didn't mind going off topic. Even in those situations. I feel like the big difference. Now is he just doesn't care to? And maybe there's a reason for that. Make sure who it just doesn't. I mean, he doesn't want to for whatever reason. No. He know what I will largely agree with that. But I thought when he was talking about Colby is there. I don't even know what Kobe says. Yes, you do. Yeah. Okay. But the way he plays it like I do. There's a lot. And then when he says very little there's still some inside one hundred percent like he was like well look at these guys up here. Like, they know that when you opportunity knocks you gotta take a fight, right? Just those little sentences. Let's you know, kind of like how the conversations went in the back, and it kind of his reasoning. The shrinking role in either gonna get on his neighbor thing forever. As always been. I don't know who that is. I don't even know what that's about. Like, he doesn't know what's going on. It's it's it's fun. It has remained fun for. That's one of the great like charms of Dana white is just as shrug your shoulders when you when you don't want to answer, it's it's it's from Ghostbusters to like the buzzing of flies to. All right next. Okay. Chuck for you. What is the optimal CD area to purchase a ticket for when going to alive, you of see I have my own views on this. But what do you think it's actually you was the best Now a a lot lot of times? of times we have weird questions like what's your favorite putting Jordan space? I I don't know. But this one is actually a pretty good question. So the question is where's the best? See, where's the best place to sit? So that it would just be if you have unlimited money cage side, I think he's saying well, though, that's not necessarily true. Okay. But let's say you, let's say you got like, a VIP seating or something. It's obviously pretty good. I think what he's saying is bang for your buck. They not that there's a limit. But like at some point you're there might on men better alternative, depending on the arena. If if if there's an arena where it's it's fairly compact, and we know that they hold them in small venues and bigger than is. But if it's a small venue, and you can get the upper deck really close to the lip. You know, like overhang. Those are good seats. I've had those before..

"We're thinking about it. Like, it got more and more fascinating all the way up until the fight. I it just became fascinating. What's going to happen? Then Pinson Henderson wins that fight. And you you think that was fun. That was that's what this reminds me of. It's a guy who's smaller. But he's you look at who is fought like godown has resume is the most ridiculous resume ever. It's not like he's losing two guys that are bought the Justice. I mean, it's it's ridiculous. So I give it to. It's just it's fun that he has that mentality. And I think given that we've been waiting to see wonderboy kind of return to that Johny Hendricks while here's a guy who's going to let let them do that they're going. They're going to square off with each other. So it comes a fun fight. Danny. Why don't you like I'm not about see you were doing the the little continuation thing. I'm like well here just on the Anthony pet is was was the guy that made you take we made fellow. He made one forty six killed. He fought Charles Manson I understand, but it'd be it nearly killed him. Okay. But nonetheless, like there's people that are nearly getting nearly killing themselves to make one fifty five, you know, he's still not a big lightweight. And you know, Steven wonderboy Thompson is a pretty big welterweight. So is I don't know. I don't it's not a wrestler type. I saw size in technically won't be like a huge issue there. But it just doesn't do anything for me. Like, I don't think it does anything for the division. And I think they can also be fighting in their own divisions against. Guys, their own size that in meaningful fights, for example. I would love to see a pet McGregor of possible or a pet is D as or you name me like you plug in Pettus with any of the top ten fifty five one of those. No shit. But I would like to see them. I mean, I don't hate it. I'll watch it. I'm sure it will be fun. But I'm just saying it's it's somewhat of a dead end. Like, it doesn't go anywhere. I don't see pet is having a career one seventy. He's not a big, dude. I see him getting this finding any of anything going back to one fifty five. I don't hold it up as the best choice. I would never make that argument. But these guys are kind of stuck in their divisions. I think they're just looking for and getting stuff by taking fights and getting ws. But if you're if you're I think your argument might be more like why doesn't wonderboy take it. Because if you're at the why wouldn't you take it you beat you'd be wonderful? You beat the number four guy in that division. You're already in an amazing spot at that point. And you're better off than the are at lightweight at that point. But look at look at the line of then we'll get smashed Dane term champ, doesn't even have doesn't even get the Tennessee. There's a long line. So he'll probably have to pick another here's fighter to before. He gets anything. So think about I suspect that one of way will win and I suspect he'll be the betting favourite. Consider something for if Pettus wins. Does that meaningfully move the needle and prove that you should have a one hundred sixty five pound division something to think about? Yeah. I mean, I've always been done for that. Also, I know that sense we're all on the same page. But I think if he beats them they might say, well, maybe we can make a division between a matter of time. Does that's coming Nineteen. night? Below like, what's the headline gonna be this time next year? He goes below Mohammed. We'll be in a one hundred sixty five pound title, title, fun. And I was like, oh, we're thinking it's like another guy just like that. All right. So that's the regular portion of the beat today. We kind of burned through a few segments. They're pretty quickly at the end. But we are not done. Oh, no, listen, gentlemen. Iceman mendenhall has so many gyms for you in this. Next segment. It's called after taking your questions. "But as the you have the chance to beat up a guy that everybody wants to see beat them, not everybody. You know, what I mean, there's a big portion of the moral people wanna wanna see this guy. Get beat up. And he's in the position to do that. And I I asked him like have you been hearing a lot about that. And he was basically like that's all he's heard about is just people want him to go carry out what they basically want to see done to him. So a unique position. I mean, he's he's a guy would not he's sitting on the big stage. They they had they had, you know, rows of seats. And then there's one one seat on the stage. And that's where he's at. And it was it's kind of a funny thing that guy has one UFC fighting. It's a loss and here he is, you know, basically sitting above everybody else and during that part of the scrum. I don't think you can compare this one hundred percent. But in a way, it's kind of like the Kimble's lies set pitcher Sally where when set the wind. It was like, well he was him as like the Kimball slice Euler Hillary. Yeah, Kimball do so. Yeah. It kind of feels like that way. Like, if if Alan is able to achieve that, you know, he'll be that be arguing intriguing too. Because he's also the most credentialed guy. He's that Greg hardy fought by. And that's what I'm saying. You know, if dependent on the fight goes. But if he goes. Right through them. I mean, you have to almost wonder like what what how will this play? I feel like this is uncharted territory. Really because we have not seen guys with that kind of passed. I guess I can recall maybe you guys can recall it, but not a guy who was a name like that with that guy who comes in the and how it's you know, how we treat him as he goes on. If he keeps winning it's a whole different ballgame. So it'd be very interested in see just talking to media members though, such a polarizing figure that you're I feel like it's going to take a long time to thought media much less fans. I feel like a lot of the media's just like absolutely not. Yeah. And there's some guys that go into the UFC like the have a big name, and you can tell they're kinda just going in get like a one and done type of deal thing. Like when you talk to Greg hardy, he he has planned like a long career like he's like, oh, yeah. In two thousand nine when this amount of fights, and I'll be knocking on the title. Like, he he he's in this for the long run. Those interesting to me is a magin. Greg hardy had never played football and the domestic violence situation..

"I I have a hard time buying that. So in any event that leads us to the Komen event, you guys spoke to Greg hardy today, Chuck I'll start with you. What is you get from the conversation? For one thing. You know, this is a guy who's used to dealing and big pressure cooker situations. I totally picked up on that. He seemed very relaxed honestly for a guy, obviously is not cutting. I'm I don't know if he's cutting weight, it's probably a few pounds to get down to the to the is a big guy that was something that prefers sure stood out. He's big guy. But ultimately, he seemed very at home, and he's very I would say. You know as managers sitting right with them during the interview process, which was a little uncomfortable. But at the same time, he seemed very like you had a game plan for how he's going to handle questions and you executed I would say that. That's the closest thing. I think he looks forward. I think he keeps he directs. You know, whatever the question is is uncomfortable. Eating my directed a little forward and kind of give you a present tense version of what he's thinking that. He's a changed man. Whatever it is. And you know, I think he's trying to keep it in that space, and he's and he's trying to make the fight. He's trying to make his the fighter self become something that makes the football self go away. That's what it seemed like to me. I I would have to agree with when I was talking to him. It felt like, yeah, he just felt very comfortable answering and everything is media trained and at this point. He's them so much media around this topic and around, you know, tons of people have asked him about his past that he already kind of knows how to navigate those waters. And then that's that's exactly how it feels. And he does a good job at it in in sort of keeping you forward and keeping you focus on the. Fighting which is coming up to talk to his opponent. I did what did you get from the discussion with Mr. Alan on? He he's fired up. He doesn't feel like Greg deserves to be in the he just just not of his status. He believes he's there because he's like this guys totally not experiencing from what I've seen. Sure. He's progressed. He acknowledges that Greg has progressed through his three fights professional fights. But he doesn't think he he's UFC ready. And he's out there to prove that and nonetheless like this is a big opportunity for him as well. You know might be controversial or not. But you know, if he gets a win on ESPN over Greg hardy, it put them on the map for sure. So I smoked so in very briefly, though, the main thing I was asking him as has he been hearing a lot because it's a me one of the lords we talked about such on this last week a little bit..

"And obviously with the Mitchell Johnson because the Mitchell is a great fighter. But he never bought into any rivalry shoes. It's like, yeah. I don't care. I'm here to fight. So who does willing to play that game? And we see it with with dillashaw. So maybe there is I think the UFC has probably started. Discover something a little more about pseudo that they didn't quite grasp before because I think we've talked about his start but sensual for a long time. But now you start to see him on. He's a very very. Natural like us. I think he did he do the car wash. I know he was on some certain platforms and said I've been so busy. I know he's been kind of a bit. He's very very natural with it. I think is very most languages, of course. And I to me I'm like, yes, that's good. Does that translate to the one twenty five division? I don't know if it needs to at some point he is a bigger guy who has missed weight and things like that. If they really wanted to they could still shut down, even if he wins, even if he wins, this they could still shut it down and put him into big fights at one thirty five. I don't know if they would do that. But they could if they really wanted to shut the door on it. They could do that. Honestly, I'm kind of with you on this. I feel like we're we're just kind of pushing the walls are closing in. We're just kinda holding them the, you know from closing in an all the way right now. But I feel like it's it's just a matter of time for that division. It also just goes back to the whole T J dillashaw or you want me to be the assassin. I'll be the assassins division to the did you guys speak to Joseph in a be this today. He felt I don't think it was an act. He seemed to meet legitimately hurt by teachers. Aw, saying what he was saying nobody has affected more than him. If you really think about it. He is the win over pseudo. Okay. He's been behind the eight ball for a long time rather. It was a bantamweight whereas behind after crews losses he couldn't get back to cruise. No path. He gets the division. Then is carved out where I think a lot of people thought for him at one twenty five he goes to win twenty-five. Obviously he wasn't able to beat the matrix. He's behind the eight ball again. He can't get a path back to division. So he's just beating guys. And I know you had the one lost a split decision loss. But he's beating nowhere to go. So it opens up again finally opens up again. And now as it opens guy. He's already beat. They're trying to shut it down. So you think about all the guys that affects the most that's probably him in. Also, we mentioned like Suharto is a big guy. He can move up to one thirty five someone comfortably. I would say I mean, he looks about the same size of dillashaw Jewish as a champion. You know on Jobe is on the smaller side. So going up to one thirty five men. You know, that'd be it was always way. Class of there. So yeah. But yeah, it's a good point. It also just I thought there exchange today on the presser about you were the guy that was trying to join a union. And now here you are division. It's like you damn right. I'm sorry. That's a cold, dude. Here's the thing. It's like you can accuse dillashaw of in the of the Cl having the kinds of attributes that in other sports would be considered cancerous. A selfishness to an extreme. Here's the thing. It's not good for making friends or keeping them. It might be pretty good winning two belts really good for that. We're going to find out. So you can't really knock it just yet. Well, we'll have to end up and see. But I still find that. I I find this contrast heading into Saturday amazing now takes us to the Komen event. We had talked about ESPN overall putting their arm around the UFC, and how it felt different than Fox Sports. Let's talk about Greg hardy not so much him. Just yet. "Ben Evita's was telling me, and I'm the guy who's gonna make sure that families and the these fighters have opportunities, and I'm gonna prove that there's a legitimate market for a real one hundred and twenty five pound guys. And on the other side, you have T J dillashaw doing the exact. Opposite. Just sees me meat. I love this contrast heading into fri- or Saturday. I suppose how do you feel about it? I think it's right. I think it's perfect. Just like you said, I think that pseudo specially is better cast in this role. I think he wants to be a good guy. I think he believes what he's saying. And I think that that's probably true. I mean, the Soto the snake was an act, of course, you know, what I mean? But the rest of you get to the dole shots, I know we've seen many different dillashaw. So it's kind of like you go through. That's that's where it's a little bit interesting. But I can appreciate him actually taking a heels the sponsor to all of this event enjoying changing. And it's almost like he's instinctively now going to be the opposite of his opponents. And I I find that somewhat fascinating amount. So think that he is that kind of guy, and he's a little bit of a rob arouse, or you know, What what I mean? I mean? And I it was fun to it was fun to watch that. I I think that he's kinda come along with you remember him from the early days if you ever interviewed him early on. He he was like he reminded me of small Ryan Bater they were both like these kind of athletes who grown up kind of watching pro sports. And you thought everything you ask them was going to be very vanilla. And what they would responded what an evolution for that guy. You know? So I I'm enjoying it. I agree with, you know, the only thing I was going to say is that you mentioned this permission. Like, the reason it didn't make sense original because we were talking about Dimitrius Johnson and dillashaw for a long time that fight made all the sense in the world two guys at the top, right? Henderson Huda wasn't in the picture. And it was almost like you couldn't justify him. You know, inheriting that Mojo by beating Dmitri's Johnson. It didn't make sense to me on that level. But as we went on and he's position him. So it's because he's positioned himself in that way. And because he's has this greater purpose. That has that that that I have now by the fight on its on its big on the big level, the Dimitrius fight and the trash talk does build of feels very natural. It doesn't feel like, you know, you're being you know, forced to like consume this this the storyline. Just kind of a little snake thing, we should know. But everything, of course, the the the. The same thing better. Just just going back and forth and just feels very natural in that sense. And honestly, even the snake thing if very feels it feels like very pseudo esque like him was showing up on brand. Yeah. So it feels it feels cool. And also, I don't know if you guys get the sense. But like these two are I mean, those not forget so who won an Olympic gold medal. Wrestling TJ dillashaw everyone's talked about how how competitive that guys. Even in the training like I can feel their competitive competitiveness bleeding through their trash talk. Like, they like, nobody wants to leave like, you know, everybody asked to have the last word, and they're kind of just going back and forth. And you know, who does bring out his medal. And I it's great. I'm really enjoying it. Right. I think that's a great way of introducing this next one about about TJ. I saw a really interesting movie recently. Have you guys seen this? It's came out last year. It was in black and white for all but five seconds of it just seeing this movie, the captain. It reminded me of T J dillashaw sort of is going to sound like I'm I'm being mean to him. But I'm not here me out. It's a true story right here. What happens this private in the in the German army two weeks before the World War Two ended? So before the allies one day, he comes upon this, abandoned caller, and it is a pristine German captain's uniform and it fits him..

"I mean that in a good way. Here's my read on this. I wonder what you guys think of it. I think that part is right? Certainly, I think everything you guys have mentioned I I wouldn't take issue with. I would offer this as an additional explanation. Remember when they made the UFC announcement they had to turn speed into f s one and they had to turn fuel into FSU, by the way. This is a little not little known facts story. I had a pilot that was going to get picked up by fuel right before the FOX really which scuttled the whole thing. Yeah. Sounds just your luck. I'm still a little bit about that. I was like all right. But anyway, neither here nor there. So they had to create these new apparatus essentially from not from scratch, but they had the rebranded. And no one really knew what it was and a lot of the content that was greener. Let's say for f s one we're Fox Sports live done or that show had Donovan McNabb and Andy Roddick talking about soccer or these two Jim oaks doing this. Then last two didn't last too long. But that's the point. Right. Right. So even if you said they had equivalent audiences, which they don't exactly with you. If you could say that they don't have equivalent institutions, right? Sportscenter is an institution faded one relative to its heyday. But still pretty important even shows with Stephen a Smith and max Kellerman, you may not like it. But I take as a big audience and has long standing tenure. I would also offer that I think ESPN has much more aggressive and complete news gathering news, disseminating news reporting operation, Fox Sports, always felt like we're at TV company with a news. Skeleton crew, this is much more robust, and you can feel them put their arms around the UFC this way. Yeah. Yeah. I think that that's exactly right. I mean, you know, the paradigm for sportscenter and everything like they were the originators of all of that. Right. I felt like with what Fox Sports one became a player there were basically trying to evolve the original idea of what SPN had accomplished. So where are we starting? You're always going back to the original. And I think that that's that's the thing. Right. It's like, it's it's like going back to the essence or the original. And that's how it feels. So I was also going to add that times have changed too. Like, you know, when they UCF entered FOX is not the same. You see that it is now, and I feel like back Daniel was kind of like they were going like, okay? Well, this is the UFC, and it was kind of like baby steps in like showing all the FOX audience. Like, okay. This is what is whereas ESPN is just like I remember everybody was when they first FOX special in the end the one fight, and it was sitting just felt like this big celebration. And everybody was speaking with a high pitch voices and everything like that. I feel like. That is did yadda. What was going to happen with this? Everybody's jaded to have that kind of response at this point. That's true. I mean, it's not it's not the same. It's not the novelty is not there. But certainly you can feel the difference. I do think that that is real now that takes us to the card itself. Let sort of go down the line as it were. Let's start with this main event man, I gotta tell you I find as each day passes. I was kind of like, I don't know how to feel about this. You know? I was like I respect I respect dillashaw. I don't know if this is the permutation I want to see. And now, I find it. Absolutely incredible. These two guys Chuck have assumed different roles. So hudo is the hero. I am the one who's willing to save fly. Walmart, right, right. "We'll do the after the beat segment that is Chuck mendenhall stared segment, and we're going to have a good old time. So keep sending them can be about other making about a may just make sure that they're one thing. That's good. Okay. All right, boys. I saw you today at the media day. You was the only one that went to the presser though. Right. I had to my radio show. You had to take a siesta? Was that the right? Oh, yes. A siesta any. We are here. It is now UFC fight week with the ESPN era upon us. And there's a lot of stuff to get you. About this. I guess I want to start here. I have some theories about this. But I I don't know how you guys feel I felt like especially today and as each day progresses, you can feel it more and more it imagine for a second. It's not true. But imagine for a second that ESPN and ESPN two had similar ratings to f s one and f s to now F S one is actually higher rated than ESPN to let okay VSBN proper is obviously a pretty important broadcast priority. So I'll say this imagine if they were equal. They're not let's say that they were to me, it would still feel different to me. There's something different about being with the SPN. I think there's some bad forces ESPN Bill that I've noticed ready. We'll get to those a little bit later. Let's start with some of the good Daniel kickoff with you to me. It feels different. I'll share with you my theories and a minute. But I'm curious if you feel that way and B if so why? Yeah, it does feel different like even just going to their site. Like, recently, they took out this law. Interactive feature that you can go on and and like see God submissions. I feel like on the FOX words era like because the UFC has some of the coolest footage out there in sports, like if you compare that the best, you know, the top footage in the NFC versus the top footage of any other sport, like pretty some some pretty crazy things that Showtime cake, right, obviously that that'd be WC. But like a lot of crazy things that have happened. So I feel like in the ESPN arrow they're starting to use that more. If you like something that was underused under the FOX era, which is good. You know, that's how you bring new audiences and those have a different feel to it in already like even talking to the fighters. Like, obviously everyone's asking them like, oh, so how do you feel being on the first car on ESPN and everybody sort of has been their step, which is nice. So yeah, definitely feels different than you. Can you can tell there's a during the FOX era it really felt like wherever the FOX players were. They're talking about the UFC were immediately either part of a UFC Colt or they were just being brought in. To talk about the OC, as you know, like they were part of it. If feels to me like the OC is merging now with an independent body. And that's what I feel like that's the difference a little bit in the feeling because you know, even across the platforms as us here the platforms talking about a lot of guys don't really know that much about it. And the things they do know are somewhat controversial. And you know, the the the things that they want to talk about. So it's a little bit of a different vibe that way. Plus, I think that he has pin just being sports fanatics haven. So many personalities have come has been so lived in. So thought of in the culture of sports for so many years in that fabric of sports that it just feels like the OC is joining into some bigger club. I didn't really feel like that. When they were when it was going with FOX it just felt like they were getting a broadcast partner. Finally, like, maybe if it was NBC or something like that. I don't think it would have much of a different by. But he SPN being a dedicated sports channel that has achieved that over, you know, thirty years, whatever it is. That's that's the difference for me. It has that feeling. The the Fox Sports handshake is legitimate. The. ESPN handshake feels like a real vice grip doesn't it?.

"Delay whole Colonel or creamy sweetcorn better? Man. The on fucking fuck corn on the cob at all. I'm a have come ahead. After the ban actually, stole my question. I was just curious that now that you're in the UC, I know that it opens up some doors, and also, you know, financially, it makes things a little bit more accessible. So I just was wondering as well. If you had gone around, you know, and try to train at new places, but you like I said dance though, the question, and you answered it very well in that last one so eagerly. The reason I got out there TJ happen to have a trip planned to LA just catch up with one of my childhood friends around. My my my original schedule five just a reasonable fight. Right. And I got that last minute call to the UFC. And so afterwards, I still went on my trip and serendipitous the all these gyms start opening up to me because I was in town and teacher. So I was in there. So he invited me up. And that's how I met that wrestling cat and some of the other people. So like, I said, it's just kind of keeping a good relationship respect to those guys and just touching base, you know, in between five semi go out there and just get a little tune up. But I I keep my ties close at home. And maybe I think what you're talking about go out to Oregon. Let's kinda my vision quest spiritual journey time between five to me and Kilgore his Kilgore is out there in Oregon and so a guy named Andre. And so we go out there. And we do a lot of we do a lot of farming a lot of mobility some plant eating and and get a little weird on the hills. And. Yeah. The only really try to stray from home. All right one last question here, this either going to be a home run or you just gonna hang up the phone. Hawaii comes back to town tonight. Right. What's gonna go down? I do you care. What you be tuning in? You say, yeah. I'm so bad sports. Did I barely? Enters a quiet Leonard one of the best Spurs. Yeah. Yeah. He's Toronto in Toronto comes back tonight the play, and I I know it's going to be a big deal to other San Antonio's other than Alex Hernandez, obviously. But just. Just preaching. It did. I mean Spurs, God bless them. You know, they put him on for a while. But let's let's like turn our attention to what's going to carry the city at this point. And you know, humbly speaking that's gonna be knee. So. You look at direction we speak. Alexander anandas to Dunkin Vinny Del Negra got the power rankings. Right. There would love to see. I would love to see how Hernandez kind of get some sort of a tribute at a Spurs game. So keep doing your thing. Alex's great. It's always great talking to you. My man good luck with rest of the camp. And can't wait to see your fight versus Donald Cerrone on ESPN big men a law. Bre. All right. We'll see. All right. That is our Hernandez to goes for booking that one actually booked all today show ran into breadth of ours. Three times in the last chat. Yeah. You're at SAM's. And britain's. Yeah. Can I say what you had Overton? He had the weirdest death. Good. All right. He had habits cabbage three boxes of peanut butter crunch crunch Jesus. And I can't remember what the word thing was. But it was something that had nothing had anything to do with anything. That was on that Bill. It almost looked like a decoy or somebody said it was no it was liquid smoke quit smoking finless. He's going to barbecue cabbage and sprinkle captain crunch on. I have no idea. Away. Peeps. And all about the captain crunch has nothing to do it for my midnight snack, but the cabbage and the liquid smoke is for Kalou pagan cabbage. Yeah. Yeah. And if you make the colo- pig, traditionally, you put it in the ground in Email on the ground oven, and it takes all fucking day, and blah, blah, blah..
