"Game with Sarah Lang's. They're laying reporter producer from MLB dot com, Sarah, how are you doing? I'm doing great, buster. We've spring training games starting tomorrow. I'm so, so excited. Yeah, but the game that matters the most and you're going to be part of the broadcast is on Monday when we get the first national role of each new rules. Yes? Yeah, so very excited to see how they all, how they all work, what's all happening, how people are reacting, how fans are reacting and tell where they are. It's going to be really fun to tell all of that. So when I talk to Carl, I just mentioned to him, you know, we talked about guys who might be poised for a breakout, just a monster season. And I mentioned Fernando Tati's junior, it just feels like he's gathering momentum. He's going to be so excited to return to the Padres lineup and the last ten days of April. And another guy mentions Kyle Tucker. Like I feel like he's already a really good player. He's not really known by a national audience in the same way that, you know, Jose Altuve Alex Bregman is. But this is the year I think he absolutely erupts because he's going to be surrounded by so much depth in that lineup. For you, who's a player who you think might have a huge year? Well, I love both of those. For me, I mean, obviously I was talking about Juan Soto on the podcast with John on Monday. No, no sense of time. That's you know to see if it is almost here. I don't know what day of the week it is. But I think that he will, you know, he and tattoos both probably feel like they have something to prove in different ways. I think that will be a really big motivating factor. You know another guy I'm really excited to see is trade Turner. Obviously, with the new rules on pick offs and the bases, everything else. I mean, we know what he does on the base path. And I think he's going to be really, really big asset to that lineup in Philadelphia, so I'm really excited to see him at that point in his career and with this new team. Let's play the numbers game. Number three. Number three is 90%. So speaking of couple Tucker and a few other guys, you know, we've been talking about these role changes. And one thing I wanted to make sure to point out is who were the guys who were shifted on the most last year among qualified players. So there were four guys to be shipped at least 90% of the time last season. Kyle's course they were, oh my gosh, excuse me. And 92.8% call Tucker and 90.9 Cody Bellinger at 90.5 and Kyle schwarber at 90.5% as well. So it's very interesting to look at those guys. We've talked about Cory's here already this Austin and I think he'd really underrated your last year. And the idea that he could be even better without that defensive position against him is of course pretty fearsome per anyone facing him. Kyle Tucker, of course, as you said, definitely seems poised to really get that national intention. I think he deserves. He's been a really good player for a couple of years. It's kind of the wild card on this list. I think the cubs are obviously hoping that not being shifted against mine help him, but they think there may be a few other things to fix there and then college were very it almost doesn't matter if you shift on him. He's just going to hand it out. The ballpark. But obviously not tasting those will be a good thing for him. Number two number two is 30 for 30 points. So last year, Jesse winker, now with brewers, had a 30 point difference between his expected batting average and actual batting average, which was time for the third largest difference for any qualified data. So what that tells us is that he was getting unlucky, maybe he wouldn't say whatever it may have been. His batting average should have been higher. In a 59 point different for the same in his slugging personage, which was also tied for third. I think he's really good pick as someone to have a bounced back here this year. He had two surgeries in the off season his knee and his neck. He was dealing with blood of injury last year, and I wonder if those contributed to his very low hard hit rate, it was 34%. This was the guy who was at 47% last year in 2021 and 49% in 2020, but we know that he is really good eye for the strike zone. 99% on chase rate, so he is not chasing it all. And they feel like if he is healthy, he will get back to hitting the ball harder, which will solve a lot of those issues from last year. Number one number one is 15. So again, we've talked a lot about this incoming pitch timer and the 15 is for the amount of time picture gets with the bases empty, 15 seconds. So we don't have specific measurements from last season to walk us around. But saka didn't measure last year. Time between pitches Thrones and the difference is the timer is from receiving the ball back from the catcher to starting to delivering. So time between pitches thrown is obviously a larger number. But when the pitch armor was announced, there was a sort of average of how long it takes to receive that throw from the catcher. And that was subtracted. So we have this sort of a pitch time equivalent. And again, these aren't exactly what the numbers will look like for this year, but it's a pretty good estimation. So there were a couple of guys whose number with the bases empty was 15 seconds or higher last year, Shohei Ohtani of 15.7 seconds. Louis Garcia 15.2. Corbin burns at 15.1 and you Jarvis at 15. Again, that doesn't mean that if you use the role last year and they would have been in an estimation, but it gives you an idea of guys who may be entering training right now, making sure that they're going to not have any alarm go off, anything go to red, go to zero or anything. On the other side, because we should give credit to guys. We won't even have to worry about this. Here are a couple of the guys who are the fastest by this metric last year, so cool Irvin, E .1 seconds on that pitch timer

"But Carl, he's someone who, if I were to draw up a list of guys who I think are going to have huge seasons, he might be right near the top because we know how motivated he's going to be coming off that lost 2022 season. Right. And look, I think buster, the operative word in all of these things is motivation. And whether it's because you self inflicted damage to yourself and you couldn't perform, whether it's because you are hurt and now are healthy, well, there's clearly players who are in free agent years that are motivated to do as well as they can and unfortunately, it implies that there are years where they're not as motivated as they would be in this particular season. And that part kind of sucks. I don't necessarily understand why every game and every year, you're not as motivated as you would be. But there are clear factors that increase level of motivation. He certainly is motivated. The same way that Nick Castellanos is motivated the same way that Jack clarity is motivated for different reasons, but you'll understand there's kind of a heightened level of motivation. Adam Wainwright and his last year, he's always motivated. Maybe there's another level of motivation because I want to leave on a high note. These are all very individual concepts of what's motivating me, but yes, he's certainly in the top three or four players who have every right and reason to be motivated. Yeah, my son does fantasy baseball. And I've told him, you should drag nanotechnology. Junior, you should jump a couple of rounds to get him because I could see him being huge. I could see Manny Machado. A year in which he's now going to be surrounded all year by an improved lineup having tattoos junior hitting in front of him. You know, I assume Soto's hidden in front of him maybe Xander Bogart's heating behind him. It's an opt out year for him. I could see him going big. I spent a couple days with Carlos Correa last week. I think he's going to have a huge year. You can feel his investment in 2023 based off of what happened this wintertime, maybe wanting to prove people wrong. You know, maybe because he's another guy buster. Dansby Swanson, you know, anybody that was that was passed over. Xander bogarts is motivated because the Red Sox didn't pay him. Dan's response is going to be motivated to show the brave screwed up, you know? And so again, a very individual, but yeah, all the names you're talking about absolutely fit into that group of there's real reason to and your son and the fantasy is a perfect example. Find somebody coming off a down year. Find somebody who's got this other level of motivation, then it's another baseball season and I'm trying to put up numbers. Kyle Tucker, the Astros is someone I sort of had pegged because of the depth in that lineup now, now that you had a Jose Abreu to you're down Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, you know, I saw him a couple times last week. He looks terrific. They feel like he's going to be able to come back and play. You know, you hope he can stay healthy. You know, the fact that he's going to have a good right handed hitter probably batting behind him in the lineup. Maybe that's going to turn out to be Jose Abreu. I think Kyle Tucker is going to have a huge year in vault into the top ten and the MVP conversation the American League. Bo Bichette, you know, who last year as good as his overall numbers were, there's some ups and downs. And I think there's something to prove for Beau in terms of his defense. I agree. And I could see him having a big year. And we talked on the podcast about Corey Seeger and how he is projected by a lot of these analytical systems as having being a guy who's really going to benefit from the change in the defensive shift rules and what you can do there. I can see Corey Seeger having a big year. Yeah, I would absolutely see most left handed hitters having bigger years than they did when they were they were shifted. And those are some of the bigger names in baseball. I think some of these rule changes and this is another big name who I think is going to benefit dramatically as a guy like Trey Turner. Just to literally the bigger bases, I have Trey Turner is a 40 40 guy. I think that ballpark is conducive to Homer's truest park is conducive to homers. There's a couple of other parks in the division he plays in now. I think he'll steal 40 bags. He was he's been very close before. Corbin Carroll's a name that we don't throw around very often in Arizona, but that's a dude that can absolutely fly his defense is incredible. I think he's another guy that I would put on a list. If you look at Cincinnati, there's not a lot to look forward to, but hunter green was ridiculous in September and October last year. And throws a hundred plus miles an hour. Because I think in New York and you know how I feel about this guy, but Michael king was this valuable reliever when he was pitching as there was last year, and he dealt with that terrible elbow injury, but he didn't need Tommy John surgery. He's back throwing again. I think he has the best stuff on the on the entire staff. I think that's an all star this year. So this is just a couple of other names of guys that I think are going to have big years this year who may not be the Fernando tatis juniors of the world. All right, I'm going to throw some over under that you in a moment with team wins based on projections coming out of Vegas. But before we do that, I want to ask you about conversation happening in the Yankees camp about the Yankees mulling the possible move of Aaron judge to left field when Giancarlo Stanton needs to play in the field and potentially in the Yankee Stadium. As you know, if Stanton is in the, you know, plays a defensive position playing in right field. There's less room to cover in that ballpark and judge indicated a reporter that he's totally fine if that's something Aaron Boone wants to do. Carl, I got to tell you like this is surprised me that it's taken this long for this conversation to take place. It always made more sense to me that the better defender you want to have playing a left field versus right field in Yankee Stadium. Yeah, man, look, I think that was personnel driven for the most part because they felt they had a less yield or prior to Bader showing up when you could move hicks over there. It was a really good defensive player. That was an issue if you're just talking about Bader Stanton and judge what Stanton's playing. Absolutely makes perfect sense. And he proved he could play center field, let alone left field. So and he's that type of person. He's that player. He's got that contract. I'm sure if they said Aaron, we'd like to think about you, maybe at first base he'd say, sure. You tell me what's best for this team that's going to help us win.

But the rational number is 45th to 60th, Don't you think overall? I think it is, but I think I'm going to rank them better than that. I really think I'm going to rank them in my thirties. I do. Three times out of four that blows up in your face and the fourth time you look at it's not going to blow up in your face, it said glad people two years in a row. Yeah. And then look what happened. I mean this year, So the third time's the charm. We're playing that game I don't want. I don't want to compare him to Vlad. I think there's amazing upside here, and I don't think I don't think it's the same. I don't think it's the same situation as glad I see where you're getting at. And you You can do that with a million players. What's what's different. As a matter of fact, I would have argued that Vlad is a more humid. And middle infield discipline feels nothing in the rodeo categories. No, but it tells me he's not going to back to 50. So you want to build it around batting average? That's the conservative, build it around a five category monster. I think that given the latter's never gonna steal bases for wander next year. Even if first of all, first pace right now, Okay? It's 20 homers. And 10 steals. With 2 90. And 80 runs its 2 82 is not to 90. Alright. So 2 82. I mean, even if he just does to 80 to 20 and 10. That wouldn't be worth a number 35 pick. Quite. I also think there's a very large chance. I think what Vlad fit when Vlad fail in 2019. I don't think that tells us that wanders going to fail in 2022. No, but it's the example of the blue chip prospect that can't miss being drafted to aggressively and you're leaving profit potential on the table height. So you rank them 60. I rank him 40. I think that's That's not I'm not going to quit. I think I'm different, difficulty wrong. I think we can. You know he's not French Wendell. I'm just saying, like, I think there's something there here where this is a top player right where I think there's going to be a contingent of people who draft him as if he's a top 25 overall player. And as we have the information we have today. I think that's going to be a mistake. The projections say not to get too aggressive about these lines. If you if you look at the tips, three year projection Next next year, then to 63 14 homers, 10 stolen bases That's out of 100 and 26 games. 10 for 21 them stolen base chances. What is it's now? If he has to 63, though you're in trouble. Forget the 10 for 21 to 63 would do right and that's how much flat fell beneath the expectations that year, it was by a significant margin. Yeah, I'll go fare the worst is here. I just want to give you the big hug and say, I want to be completely on board with this optimists approach. I love Wonder Franco. I think he's going to be an amazing player. But Don't get me wrong, so no in two years to He could that as a matter of fact one. So does the other side of it. That next year, he could be the fantasy what one soda was and that first year in the majors. I'm going to go with that angle. Next. Good conversation to have as we, uh, purchases in Brandon. Is on by this week and as the semis coming up, he wants to know and I head to head leave, how we should be spending the time off. How should he be preparing his roster? I would sit on my hammock and get some raised. That's why I said, setting his roster. I knew that was going to be the answer. I had a hedge the question with an actual baseball question. I'm not happy. It's raining today. I can't go outside. Uh well, you you say, Tristan. What would you do? I mean, obviously, every bench spot should be used for next week. I mean, pick up guys who are hot. Even guys like swindle just to make sure that your opponent Kant's. That's something I definitely do. I'm looking at matchups for next week. I have a head to head league where my last week of the regular season and I actually added Lamonte Wade. And it's a small league like you only have, like seven acts of hitters acted, I activated LaMonte Wade and belt off waivers. Because they were course and now they're at Wrigley. Terrible pitching. And I thought, Okay, this is going to work out. I'm off to good start so far. So look at the matchups of the Rockies at home, you know? And the Rockies next week, I think is the last major home stamped, is it? Let's see. Nope. Nope. Next week, there's still on the road. Um so hurt your opponents help yourself. That would be good. I'd say don't waste a single roster spot period. Make sure everyone is maximized and beyond that, that's just broad strategy. If volume of pitching matters that comes into the start caps, innings caps for your matchup. To start pictures Weekly versus Daily lock. If any of that comes into play, make sure you have your starting pitching assignments lined up before your opponent does. That was my next question, Right?.

So link goria could return in time for the series against the mets this coming tuesday anthony de scallop fani right acl inflammation played catch over the weekend on sunday. He plans to test his ankle. But it didn't show enough improvement to proceed with scheduled bullpen sessions so the giants placed him on the injured list. Here as well for you. Athletic fans chris bassett. He said to go undergo surgery on tuesday again. We talked about him getting hit in the face with the line drive on our last episode. So he's going to have surgery on tuesday to secure displaced bones from his face after being hit in the face man. Goodness man. Best of luck to chris bassett. That's gotta be painful. Also stephen piscotty he had given Piscotty let's see here to quarter sewn shots already this year and it looks like surgery is likely to take care of nagging wrist issues that the outfielder has dealt with dating back to last year. So surgery most likely to take place in the off season for stephen piscotty for the brewers escobar. Escobar accident sunday's game with right hamstring discomfort He was a trade deadline. Acquisition for milwaukee he hit to ninety one with two home runs and eight ten psi in his first twenty games with the club. They hope that he will be date. Today's here moving forward and then freddy peralta right shoulder. Inflammation played catch on sunday for the first time since going on the injured list. He is hoping that history will be the minimum of ten days and that he will be able to return very shortly for the astros. Alex bregman he returned to the field. Friday night going two for four with a grand slam across seven innings while on his minor league rehab in aaa sugarland. He's been sidelined for nearly two weeks after suffering a setback recovering from a left quad straight but bregman said after the game. He's feeling great but a timetable. He's playing almost every day on his rehab assignment at aaa gwen it. So it looks like he could be back in the show here and just a couple of days. So let's wrap up segment number two with some surprising league leaders usually look at stats and standings here on mondays episodes. Well i wanted to condense this a little bit since. I'm going to take up the last two episodes talking about the standings as well as each team in general here so major league baseball most surprising league leaders when it comes to pitching you gotta go with the winds kyle. Kendricks has fourteen wins for a team. That's fifteen games under five hundred. Your league leader in wins is coming from a sub five hundred team which is pretty crazy to think about you. Also have austin adams who leads major league. Baseball in hits by pitches with sixteen so adams had trouble controlling the ball. Offensively the most pickoffs goes to ryan weathers of the padres. He's got eight pickoffs this year. He's only thrown seventy eight innings. So that's that's a lot for that little a dime there and then you also have some hitting stats here. Caught stealing in the national league jazz. Chisolm junior the marlins leads the league with seven for the national league but the surprises in the american league which shohei ohtani. He's been caught eight times this year. He does have eighteen steals but otani eight times is also very high when it comes to getting hit by a pitch. Jonathan indie of the reds leads the national league with eighteen this season and in the american league you have mark cannot of the oakland a.'s with twenty two. So he's at the top of the list and then your leader in sacrifice bunches adam wainwright of the cardinals with twelve. So the pitcher is usually lead that that category but wainwright at the top of the list as he's been impressive with twelve so one other thing to talk about the baltimore. Orioles lost their eighteenth consecutive game on sunday. Now is that the longest single season losing streak of the past sixty years. Actually there's a few teams ahead of them now. They're creeping up here on the list because it's eighteen and county but ahead of them. You have the two thousand five. Kansas city royals who lost nine thousand nine straight games. The nineteen seventy-five tigers also lost one thousand nine in a row that season. The one thousand nine hundred sixty nine montreal expos had twenty losses. Consecutively the nineteen eighty. Eight baltimore orioles. So that's not even a franchise record for baltimore as the eighty-eight orioles lost twenty one consecutive times. But you're all time leader. The nine thousand nine hundred sixty one philadelphia phillies with twenty three straight losses. That season so baltimore would have to get swept to additional times in order to have that record of twenty three consecutive losses. So matt just a tough three weeks there in baltimore orioles fans what are listening. I appreciate you guys hanging in there. Because i know i'd be on the football season and talking about the baltimore ravens if i were you guys so that does it for segment number two here of the gsm see baseball. Podcast brought to you. Yeah, it's gonna be fun to watch these two offenses go Roxy, number one and number two and runs per game so far in the American League, the Astros with the lesser record than the Boston Red Sox, actually score more. They don't hit his many home runs, but Boston coming in with a 32 and 20 record. These guys. They're first in O. P. S in the American League. Second in runs per game should be a good one. Eduardo Rodriguez, who struggled he's the starter for the Red Sox, he said After the first inning his last time out, he put up three scoreless. Don't like he got his control and command back, so we'll see if he can carry that one in to this game today. Astros. They're going through a challenging time right now is Dusty Baker has Michael Brantly on the injured list? You're Don Alvarez and you'll agree l day today with some minor injuries. So the Astros right now we're trying to get through this period minus some of their key bats. Yeah, and you know the thing about it is you gotta have guys stepping up. If you're going to be a club that you know is going to continue to be a postseason October club. You've got to have those guys step up and one thing that's pretty remarkable last year. Member. They were one of the teams with a losing record that got into the postseason and they went deep into the postseason close to make it into the World Series. So you know pretty impressive what they did with that. So I'm sure Dusty Baker a little more comfortable this year, knowing his personnel is a swell better having a better feel for what they've got the ultimate training site. As well as in the minor leagues here that they could make sure this team stays on track. It doesn't get too far off. Did you give it all your attention? There was a lot going on yesterday. Had the media was out in tow and 40 Niner. OTA is which I think provided a lot of content yesterday. As far as 40 Niner fans are concerned who they're looking at. As far as position battles go. They had a huge group of guys show up over 80 guys showed up to the O T. A is they're allowed to have up to 91 on dear was not the expectation that would have that many. NBA playoffs going yesterday. Three big games last night, the Lakers even the Syrians with sons After a 1091 out to win the Mavericks over the Clippers. They take a two nothing weed Clippers backs against the wall Now in that series, and then the Nets hammer in the Celtics won 30 to 1. Oh, eight. The A's getting beat over at the Coliseum. Shohei Otani is hitting 117 mile in our home runs and Vlady Junior is now the major league leader in home runs with 16. So a lot going on yesterday, a lot that we can get into were gonna talk some Giants baseball here. Then on the other side, Jake Kaplan of the athletic. He covers the Houston Astros and wrote a great piece about all the top free agents short stops, including Brandon Crawford, who the Giants could be looking at this offseason, or I guess what they've done is they've tiered these short stops in the athletic. They do this, like tears renting thing they get AH group of the baseball writers every week. And on Thursdays. They do Rankings on, you know, ballpark food, the best short stops. The best left fielders may be the best power hitter is the best rookies. Whatever it is in this past week was the theme tearing ranking system of all the short stops. And basically, they've got Corey Seager at the top. Who's not even playing right now on after that, you get your favorite stories and your hobby bias. And you're Carlos Correa. And then you're down to Brandon Crawford and Market Simeon. Couple of veteran guys were having big years and Brandon Crawford with another nice game yesterday. Creative, Tony just having to wear this one man. Was kind of cool in the broadcast. After he drove in a couple more runs. They seems like every night now they're throwing up that top 10 R B I leaders in San Francisco Giants history and they were showing the picture, of course of Brandon Crawford, a candlestick and him hanging over the railing, begging the Giants not to leave in 1992 or at the end of the 92 season and it's got a cool Crawford, I think was Keiper, he said. When the Giants drafted him. They thought he was going to be a good player, but they did not anticipate. And it's tough to anticipate that unless you're taking a guy in the top 10 that he may end up being you're in the top 10 and your franchise history all time in runs driven in so good win for the Giants yesterday, ate nothing. Kevin Gossman goes five innings, nine strikeouts and really was the pitch count. They got him. He could have gotten a little deeper. I think sort of funny about the strike out. It comes back to the lesson. Gentler and watching Bull Durham, right, Dave, the try to get some ground balls. They're more democratic strikeouts of boring. Besides that, they're fascist. You go deep into counts like that. You're getting a lot of swings and misses like he does Kevin Gossman and and often times, you know, make it that deep into the ballgame because you're striking guys that you're working deep into counts, But he looked pretty good yesterday and the Giants bullpen, obviously flawless when he came there, allowing run, so a game they should have won and they did win. Here's the The sort of catch to all this. The Dodgers went out yesterday and hammered the Astros in Houston. Clayton Kershaw out seven innings gives up one run. It was just a solo home run to Alex Bregman struck out six. I watch a lot of that game. Good game for Kershaw yesterday. Stuff to watch Man. I've watched a lot of Dodger Baseball this year, just trying to Gonna change the energy don't root against the Dodgers, and they are a dangerous, dangerous, dangerous team of the Giants. I think you're looking for two this weekend. You're really hoping you're going to get to know Trevor Bauer against the Giants this weekend since cursed out through yesterday, he'll be scheduled to throw on Sunday in this series. And so they will not see Trevor Bauer since power goes today, so four games step, But you're gonna Miss Bauer this time around against the Dodgers. The question is who the Giants are gonna have going in that series. Now that Logan Web spot, the Scott Casper spot would be scheduled to come up on Friday. I guess this week they were talking about a lot of injury reports stuff coming out yesterday for the Giants, a few guys as far as pitchers are concerned. Logan Web Aaron Sanchez and Tyler Beatty. Three guys with think Giants fans on the Giants brass I've been looking at is as coming back soon. Logan Web obviously the closest to returning Remember. He was missed his last start because of a shoulder strain He was up to throwing at 90 ft. They said yesterday. They're going to see how his arm reacts to it to throw enough flat ground yesterday to see if he'll be ready to go this weekend, Aaron Sanchez went out to see Dr Neil Allen trashing Elway arms specialist because This is one of the weirder stories for the Giants is that he was throwing Finery needs in his workout off of the shoulder injury or a labor of injury over the last couple of seasons and the Giants that he was gonna be some flamethrowers the back into the rotation and see after pumping like 89 90 91. He was giving Alex but he just was not as effective. I don't think as the Giants and hoped and didn't have the spin right that they had hoped he would have coming in to this season..

When are you telling me that now and much like this pitcher last night at detroit has said he didn't feel like he had all of this stuff. In his pre warmup and his bullpen session and he goes out. Kicks throws a no hitter. Matt prater told me say when he kicked the ball. He didn't think he got it all like he felt like he just barely missed it just enough and as soon as the ball was kicked. Colquitt jumps up and goes. You've got the record. The ball still flying in the air and Yeah so it was a pretty interesting story mile high though. He fouled it off at 87. It's so big. That it's one of those. You don't think you need a lot of movement. Michael Brantly doesn't move a lot. "That makes them maybe. Wanna watch the sport in the first place and try to understand the rules. Because i mean if baseball's just on the background and you don't know anything about it why would you watch it. It's you don't know what's going on. I mean half the time. This pitcher guy is just throwing the ball toward the mound. And you don't know why the guy's not swinging right and so how can we make the rules a little bit more universal and understood and a little bit more public. do you think it is incumbent. Upon a player like mike tr our instant really good wire to actually go out there and do the marketing and sell themselves or do you think that it's best to stay. Drowsy wants to stick to himself. That's that's his prerogative. You can do what he wants. It kind of depends you know. I think my trout aside there are players who clearly want to be marketed. I mean you see it with alex bregman unpopular opinion for many. You see it with trevor. Bauer right. he's doing his darnest to get his name out there and people to know him and i think that with the support of the sport and maybe allowing a few more antics that make more headlines or better known across the younger generation that could really get the ball rolling so despite what are what are generation thinks about games though consensus that i do feel like we have about baseball is that baseball games are still the best games to go to because football games are so made for tv. It's really hard to follow especially depending on where you're sitting. You don't know where the first down markers are you. Don't know where all the lines are. You can't see penalties where you're sitting. Nba games a. There's a lot of dead time baseball while the game is slow. It's pretty active the whole time. There is something to watch the whole time. And obviously the ballpark. Experience is kind of more special than all of those other ones. Why do you. Why do you love going to baseball games. Exactly what you said you can watch baseball from essentially any see in the stadium and see what you need to see right weather. There's screens that'll help you whether it's angles. I think there is genuinely nothing more exhilarating than watching the ball. Eva park at the ballpark ray. I mean touchdowns you know three pointers. But if there's something magical about baseball. And i think also the time of the year that baseball happens. I mean the nice crisp summer nights in an outdoor stadium. I mean just nothing. Beats it okay. So you're a bit of a foodie. Call myself a foodie but i do enjoy good food from time to time. So we are going to do a draft of sorts of ballpark foods. Okay so we're going to chew each. Choose five ballpark boots. You're the guest so you'll be the away team you will bat first ladies first of course So it's gonna go you me you will trade off. I end will choose okay. I'm going to the ballpark. This is what i want to eat. So you kick it off for us okay. The number one. Pick for ballpark boots number. One pick has to be the. I made a list also on. I wrote it down on paper on. Oh see people don't get that anymore. No one writes anymore. No one uses a pen and paper guy. oh for sure. There's nothing like it with that. Said number one. Pick the buffalo cauliflower. "So Buster. The Red Sox and Alex Cora mutually parted ways on Tuesday. I think that's what we're calling it. After it was revealed that Cora was an integral part in the illegal sign stealing operation in Houston in two thousand seventeen when he was the astros bench coach. MLB is currently investigating the Red Sox as well to determine whether he implemented similar signs stealing in their twenty eighteen world series winning season season and now we are all awaiting to see what his punishment will be. What was your reaction to the report of his wrongdoing and his subsequent firing well? I wasn't surprised that he wound up leaving from what I understand from talking with sources that he knew as soon soon is the astros fired. Aj hinch and they fired. Jeff Luneau their general manager that his position with the red sox wasn't tenable depressing intimate set in terms. The suspensions and at the very least Alex is going to probably get a year and if they were to stack on the extra counts for the red SOx walks in two thousand eighteen at the end of that investigation. He might even get more time than that and so I think he totally understood that they're in a position where they were going to have have to consider a change. We met with Alex yesterday and everyone went into that meeting trying to answer. The question is what was in the best interest for the Boston. Red Sox Alex was professional understanding that he had made a mistake and and so after a couple of conversations. We all mutually agreed that we needed to part ways. But we do it. Alex feels like to some degree. Sorry that he's leaving on his own terms just as someone who's known for a long time and worked with them. I certainly feel that way a year ago. I think we would talk about about. Alex is being the most powerful manager in baseball and now we don't know if he's ever going to manage the big leagues again. But you worked with him when he was at. ESPN right right right. Worked with him for four years. ESPN did shows with him was around him and then after he left. You know when I would do my work on Sunday night. Baseball all or other type reporting and you talk to him or you're around the red sox and you watched how he interacted with players boy. He ascended so quickly and I can't remember someone who probably was better suited for the position of manager and saying I can't sit here today and predict that he's ever going to manage again in the major leagues seeks buster. What did baseball say that? Alex Cora actually did in Houston that he was essentially at the center of the conversation. An that had begun with Carlos Beltran and some of the players about refining. This science stealing Alex was the one according to the report who ask ask employees to install a monitor that could be used right behind the Astros dug out by the way that monitor was located. Did No more than thirty feet where. Aj hinch their manager was standing. No more than thirty feet were. Alex was doing his work bench coach during the course of the game. So basically everybody knew it was there. Everybody I've heard stories in the last forty eight hours about how members of the Astros have reached out to people though the teams comes after the athletic came out with an initial report and tried to assure peers competitors. Hey don't it wasn't that serious that that story was overblown and then when the report came out with the details the other day there is so much anger there are friendships that are fractured. Because of how some members the Astros not only did they cheat back in two thousand seventeen but in the two months that followed the athletic report. They've been lying. Did their peers about what they were doing. Well Chorus reputation like around baseball before this news. He was known as the guy who would hold things together. During a moment of crisis he took over the national team from Puerto Rico leading in the WBZ. He showed such a great way of dealing with players connecting with people at that time the Puerto Rico national team potentially had three shortstop Havi Abayas. Hi as an Francisco Lindor Carlos Correa and among baseball nerds like myself. We were all wondering like how is. How is Alex GonNa work through those Egos you know? How is he going to convince one guy to be the third baseman who got to be shortstop and one got to be the second basement any did it? And when he was the Astros Bench coach in two thousand thousand seventeen men he made such great connections with Alex Bregman at George Springer. They loved Alex Cora the the players loved Alex other people in Baseball. Absolutely love Alex. When the Red Sox officials who put in this position where they have to fire him they talked about that how much that's regard they have for him and I think that's I has been universal leading up to this whole decision? What was he like as a player at the time he was drafted by the dodgers? He was regarded as an excellent prospect but he never really developed into the consistent offensive player that the dodgers thought he was going to be. He carved out this role through a fourteen year career of being a role player but he was smart guy and was always known like Carlos. Beltran is someone who it was really good at ascertaining what the other team was doing with it signs for decades there was an accepted form of stealing signed and that would be the runner standing at second base and figuring out what the catcher signs were there with a lien or with the placement of a hand on a knee they could could convey to the hitter. What the next pitch was? And that's the reputation that he developed early on so he was signed stealing back that he was good. Good at picking up on Pitch Tipping. I'm sure as smart as Alex is. As much experience he had in baseball. He was tremendous. It picked up signs when leading off at second base and potentially relaying back to the hitter so despite that science stealing ability outscore score never really broke through as a player he retired in two thousand eleven as a career to forty three hitter but in twenty sixteen buster he returns to the Big Leagues Leagues as the Astros Bench Coach now Houston is known as extremely progressive forward thinking organization. How much were analytic Atlantic's and video? Apart of course coaching methods it was a lot in terms of what he was responsible for with defensive positioning. I've had conversations with Alex when we would talk about an infielder. Who may be wasn't that good and didn't have that much range and Alex would give me awake and say he'll be fine? We'll put them in the right place. That's part of what he excelled at when he was with the Astros putting a guy in the right spot to make a play a now the Astros under Jeff Luneau always had a rule that reporters could not talk to coaches. They're only organization baseball. That I know of that made that rule. I think in part because they wanted to protect their information. They didn't want the coaches talking about what they were doing. But I think Alex like Brent Strom their pitching coach. Aj hinch. They got a lot of information. A lot of feedback from the front office that they wound up using the culture in the organization has come under a lot of scrutiny really for months now. The commissioner statements singled out. Do you think Cora felt built enabled. Perhaps by the Astros focus on winning at all costs absolutely when you look back at the history of the Astros after Jeff Luneau took over. Boy does this seem inevitable. 'cause I mean they SP- have absolutely skirted right at the edge of of competitive propriety. All the way through when you think about what happened when Jeff took over the team. Not only did they tank. They tanked in a way that no one had ever seen before in baseball. You know in one year I think it was two thousand thousand thirteen. They cut their payroll down to the point. Where only one player on the team at the end of the year was making over a million dollars? One player I know what the commissioner said about the word tanking but I can tell you privately so many executives at that time. We're going to see what they're doing. They are absolutely they're not even pretending to. I have a representative major league product. It was clear from their actions. Then that so long as you wound up winning and you got the number one pick and and you pick Carlos Correa or you wind up with Alex Bregman. That would justify what they did. That same sort of mentality was in play during the stealing stuff

The Lead
The 2019 Stories That Changed Sports: Baseball
"After some of the concerns in two thousand seventeen that had nothing to do with the Astros actually Major League Baseball did institute new concerted guidelines about electronic signs dealing right. This happened actually before the eighteenth postseason and then really was implemented for nineteen and baseball said in statement. It released to us that there are complaints from from a lot of teams about a lot of other teams and they were hearing all kinds of stuff so they took it upon themselves to require a few different things. One was in eighth second. delay all feeds in the Ballpark so the team could not look at what was going on. Live and decode immediately in that real time sense also. There were additional personnel L. stationed in video rooms major league baseball officials so that if teams were engaged in Shenanigan those mlb people could see that firsthand and even in dugouts in the postseason or personnel. He'll be so they did take some measures and yet there is still a feeling among many in the sport this stuff goes goes on. And what's what's the astor's reaction been to this. They came out with a statement essentially saying that they're going to conduct an investigation in conjunction in with MLB and basically go forward that way now. What they said was regarding the story posted by the athletic? The Astros Organization has begun begun investigation in cooperation. With Major League Baseball. It would not be appropriate to comment further on the matter at this time. Their General Manager Jeff Luneau spoke to reporters and said Dad essentially that but he also said that he doesn't believe there. Two thousand seventeen world series titles should be tarnished reason. We won the world series and twenty seventeen. This was able to Ben Alex Bregman just a lot of great players and they do things the right way and organization. That's what we aspire to do as well and you know as you mentioned sign. Stealing has been part of baseball for a century and even electron examine stealing while against the rules has been suspected from other teams. I didn't have an Evan and I didn't have enough to report which teams were doing. Exactly what but this is not simply astros issue now how far and how extensive it goes which other teams that. I don't know exactly for sure but teams have accused each other of this going to two thousand seventeen. The Yankees and red sox had the apple-watching viewed as entering the digital age with the Yankees accusing the socks of using an apple. Watch to help steal and relay their catchers hand signals the the red sox ultimately refined by Major League baseball for US an Apple Watch in illicit way and that is the last time a team has been penalized for this kind and of conduct the Yankees were fine to at that time but for another kind of thing and last year in the playoffs there was the situation with the Indians in the Astros where the astros were kind of engaging counter surveillance. The reigning World Series Champs are accused of possibly having a mole next to the Indian's dugout. The man in question was removed several times. Thanks for taking pictures and texting and now the Indian cried foul and it never really got anywhere but it was a big incident at the time so this has been going on yes and the Astros Dome of it not there are other teams are suspected that you've heard everything from the man in center field with the white shirt short somehow And using some high technology to do that to a camera in Centerfield with an ipad attached with the hi pad breaking down pitchers grips to determine whether he is tipping and then that information being conveyed all kinds lines of talk all kinds of suspicion. It's tough tougher baseball. Prove as one person pointed out in the article in part because if you come forward and accused the team well maybe your own hands dirty. And that's the problem right. Can you just tell us in two thousand seventeen from the people that you talk to you. How open this wise is at the Astros that people were talking about doing this openly in within the team the team elephant was can't say for sure because I wasn't there wasn't in it but but as you reported it was certainly discussed internally disgust among players among different personnel in uniform? It was a topic because it was being important. It's just the most being employed you talk to a manager and he basically said that this was an issue that permeates the whole league and that the League has done a poor job of policing policing this so in the course of this investigation. I'm not asking you to speculate on the League will do. But what could come out of this investigation. I'm I'm not sure we know that the red sox were find in two thousand seventeen for the Apple Watch so I imagine if they found that the astros committed wrongdoing. That baseball could issue. You find to them.
