"Show business. Deliver forget Joel. Struggle support major pursuing his own dreams husband Abe embraces a new mission. That's Tony Shalhoub. And Rose Learns that. She has talents of her own. A couple more blurbs and WanNa read them better call song going back now. Better Call Saul from Richard Newman Ferguson of the Observer. Better Call Saul continues to be the consistently underrated best thing on Netflix. Since the start of its penultimate series if you weeks ago. It's bowling along with slow. But unstoppable momentum and Ben Travers of India wire all of these consistently astonishing formal touches combined created value outweighs. The pain yes better call Saul the double edged sword of reward and loss. But it isn't too sad to watch because you to invest it to look away. Well this isn't good blurbs. All right back to Mazel which is a completely different show. It's light it's fairly. Listen I WANNA shows you have to find some personal affection for I. Love the era of the nineteen fifties despite the virulent racism. I wish I could have been alive. At that time. I loved the songs I love. The cars love the clothes and marvelous. Mrs Maes more than anything is tremendous. I candy eight episodes Binge Watch and I just look at that and I marvel at the production of they must put so much effort and money into the meticulous nature finding all the details right literally the color of her clothes. Mrs Maes alike. It's just so bright frilly The Steady Cam. Work is amazing. I mean you talk about great directing on TV shows. Watch an episode of Marvelous Mrs Mazel and look at that steady Kayla. These are like orchestrated shots. They must do take after take. Rehearsal in many ways reminds me of a play because especially when the apartment Cambridge's swoops in and watches them as they go off and on and the dialogue. So rat. Tat TAT tickles. Neil Simon play lost in yonkers or something helped by the fact of course is New York Jews in one thousand nine fifty. But it's got that whole rhythm towards I think it's amazing and I think that rhythm that energy translates on the screen Mike Concern with it. Is I think at times. It's a little bit light much. Like candy is real. Much substance to it in the first few episodes. I think there's really not a whole lot of meat on the bone but episodes four five six seven and eight so the second half which is to say is very very strong and I think it's smart because it starts to look at commentary not only about this housewife whose become unshackled as new wave of women independent woman. I mean the husband's raising the kids. She's off on tour doing comedy but also for African Americans that character shy Baldwin the Great Sterling K. Brown who Join I love? He plays the manager for shy bald. Who is the lead singer? The constitution that maizels on Sterling K. Brown can do no wrong as well. He's awesome the show which she actually got to do more to supporting role but he's always tremendous and the rest of the cast. Alex Borst is really funny. She's on family guy believes she does the voice of Meg. She plays the manager Suzy. She's got a handful of great lines. I mean at one point. They're putting a face mask on and she goes. What is just sits in your face like a French. Or I mean she's tossing out one line up to one and I like that and of course. I haven't even mentioned yet my favorite part of this show. Tony Shalhoub one of my favorite actors. Big night when the all time classics. I've ever seen monk and then I just love Tony. Shalhoub from Green Bay Packers Fan. This season there's not a whole lot of him. That's my only criticism of this season. It's not a lot of Chalupa. His his storyline. I don't think had much meat on the bone him. The character rose Weisman is wife Merran Hanko but Chiluba if you watch the first two seasons amazing and again Joel verifies definitely one at least one. If not two EMMYS for his performances. Eight weisman definitely will make a SAG award as well so ultimately. I like the fact that now looking female empowerment but also racism and just the emptiness of Showbiz life but again back to the energy and the style. There's one episode starts the first ten minutes for ten SORTA. There's no letup there's no cut. It's just her. There's no there's cuts editing. I mean in terms of the rhythm and the movement there's no letup as far as Mazel to supplement. Her income starts doing voiceover work and her and suzy start going to all these different Places I mean. The cavs are flying around the music role in the cameras. Rolling the music automate. It's just it's like a symphony for the senses and it really is an example of just how the people are who make the Marlins Mrs Mazel. It's available on Amazon. Obviously I love the music made a ton of Louis. Prima you got Sinatra Amy Sherman Palladino and Daniel Palladino are the executive producers. Amy Sherman Palladino is the creator of it. Some reviews a little bit Tepid Matthew Gilbert the Boston Globe. It can be a fun. Diversion sweet and it's Willful. Irrelevancy and alluring jovial rhythms. That's pretty good so if the Atlantic it's frustrating because the show keeps hinting that it's edging toward more substantial fare only tobacco at the last minute I think in the first few episodes that's accurate later on. It does actually have more substance and Ben Travers of Indie wire season three could rebound and its back half the focus shift. Real problems could arise and browns begin sterling K. Brown could get that juicy arche deserves even without all that the first five episodes insured. Please die hard fans okay. Well he is in the first five. I've seen all I can tell you. It's a show which is worthy of watching end to close up Joe. I often get criticized rightfully so my shows in my Interest are so male dominant. It's nice to have a show which is a female league but you can watch with your wife or girlfriend significant other marvelous. Mrs Mazel three and a half maple leafs I dig it and just to follow up Tony Slough. He won outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. Twenty nineteen thousand nine Emmy Awards last fall and Rachel Brosnahan one in twenty eighteen and the show in two thousand eighteen won outstanding comedy series. Gotcha the second season didn't do as well. Shalhoub won supporting actor but Bosnian did win for lead in. The show won for best series. Yep Yeah and I will also mention that Alex Bernstein one four supporting actress at the Emmys last year as well but yeah definitely the cleaned up in two thousand eighteen thousand nine hundred and they had a pretty good showing but not nearly as dominant. It's twenty eighteen. I've fleabag coming along for the ride as well. Yeah Alright One more movie before we talk about some news which is affecting all of course corner buyers in the entertainment World Bobby Walker Ben. Affleck movies called the company maintain your anniversary of the moves. I WANNA check it out. Never seen him before. And about Ben Affleck Living. The American dream great job beautiful family shiny portion the garage when corporate downsizing leaves him and Co Workers Phil Woodward Chris Cooper and gene McClary. Tommy Lee Jones jobless. The three men are forced to redefine their lives as men husbands and fathers Bobby soon finds himself enduring enthusiastic life. Coaching job building houses for his brother-in-law played by Kevin Koster which does not play these executive skill set and perhaps realization that there's more to life than chasing the bigger better deal. I mentioned the way because Tommy Right now. I think we all know we're facing a real economic crunch. Could be on the verge of another recession and this movie came out just after the great recession and focused on you know the white collar white man older losing his job and then realizing what she's supposed to do with his life and just how bloodless and how cruel the corporate world can be Caryn James of Newsday with heroin realism. The companyman captures the rob personal impact of the economic meltdown. Also student hold of the New York Times. Ben Affleck and Chris Cooper Play Characters. Who learned that in a company concerned about the bottom line? Almost everyone is expendable this movie. Maybe a little too close to home right now. I'm sure a lot of people right now. Are Feeling the economic pinch. But I'M GONNA give it two and a half maple leafs. I liked it for the cast of Affleck Jones and Cooper and Kevin Costner. Plan this real a hardworking laborer. I just found that quite honestly. It's tough to have a lot of sympathy for a bunch of affluent white men. I mean athlete at one. Point is going for a job interview and the woman tells me how much remaking is always make a one twenty with bonuses by willing to settle for one ten and he says the smarmy look on his face. And I'm like listen. How can you build around mood on these guys and by the way? He's the cheapest Chris Cooper's by making at least two fifty and Tommy Lee. Jones is one of the very rich rich executive multimillionaire. So it just think it's tough to build a movie around. Those guys were hard to be sympathetic. For as good as those actors are and as much empathy you can ask for anybody who loses her job. Of course no matter how much you're making it's very sad to go through. Couldn't imagine the depression and especially for these men who really see themselves and their self worth through their job which is why still I do recommend it but I just think ultimately it's tough to rally around these guys in so many others have it so much worse off Joe. I couldn't put any better than what you just said and I'm realizing right now today. It's Kinda Ben Affleck. Centric show much like last week. I'll say much more but stay tuned all right exactly. Well the good tease all right. So entertainment news to pass along networks picking up Johnny Isa. Raise the lovebirds a week after being pulled from its April third theatrical. Release BECAUSE OF CONCERNS ABOUT CRONY BARS. Lovebirds going to net flicks. It was set to be released via paramount. But it's denouncing Annapolis as directed by Michael Showalter. I recognize that name because he directed the big sick Kamaluddin Janis breakthrough movie. This is about a following a couple on the brink of a break-up and then become embroiled in a bizarre and hijinks filled murder mystery so Hollywood grapple the closure of US theaters. You got many movies now. Being sent to digital services weeks early speaking out I saw. The hunt is now available here on direct. Tv IN NORTH JERSEY. Bergen County. I also saw the invisible man with Elizabeth. Moth is available. But it's like twenty bucks come on movie. Movie theaters movie chains like listen. I'm I paying twenty bucks. We give it to me for ten. I know listen. The North Jersey price of jive discuss fourteen twenty five to see a movie so I got to pay more for this. I guess the thought is. You're watching it with a spouse or with a partner so twenty bucks ten bucks each now. Normalcy movie solar. Come on those movies should be ten bucks right now. Like I'm not going to pay twenty bucks to go see the hunt. At least in this case the lovebirds is going to be on Netflix..

"Looking same dash looking. let's say in dash look I know what you're saying how about you right hi all I liked it because all my shows that I watch show one so I feel let guy one as well all they feel like a winner here where is I felt like since it was one of the the years of the enemies where because the Emmys are different now because of all the streaming services in that back in the nineties home improvement was nominated every year friend every year right because they just had their cyclical TV seasons Seinfeld the crown yeah out of circuit right now. changer things is out of circuit right now so it left me a couple of my real go to's not getting some some I think my my overall take away from last night was. I guess I don't watch enough TV. grossly under qualified. it does lead to our Facebook question today what's your favorite sandwich in correct it is I. what did the Emmys make you want to watch Max yeah and. I guess I kind of feel like. I do one of two things kind of maybe do I need to try flea bag. a Steve craters and whatnot but is there anything redemptive about it of course yes is charming and there's a lovely there's ultimately a good message there are some dramatic elements to flea bag it's not just a slapstick show right now it's you know it's about sisterhood and family and relationships but there's a lot of inappropriate scenes and like a lot coarse language we all. I even uncomfortable talking to him about looking at the first down that particular law. no you liked on a laugh at it as well I can't imagine Steve Patterson hearing that there's a lot of sex but you really don't see a lot no I don't see nudity you you really don't but it's pretty vulgar. so I think I might watch the marvelous misses me. yeah as my again my wife who loves that show and watched it all has said she would walk through it again with me just to get me caught up to speed for season three it's a really good show and I was surprised that I. I mean she didn't win. it broke my long standing rule that if the no Marvel's Mrs Mays was nominated it will win well it did win for supporting right yeah it won out Tony salute and then Alex Borstein one right off the bat alright well my theory standing tonight is what I can sweep and it's sweet and then flea bag came into one three award let's say her name again so everybody knows it Phoebe Waller bridge bridge yeah I used to that name popped up B. she's adorable she's great I mean in this all started from a one woman show and we'll get to some of the speech is coming up because honestly I feel like there is only a handful of good speeches like even the speeches were as boring as this we'll see I was like somebody say something controversial I think if there were some high moments with speeches will go through yeah sensors and acceptance speeches but here's maybe why we felt the way we did it just dawned on us this morning. there was only one thing that you saw all night center stage a microphone and presenters slash those accepting award yeah there weren't any other alternate set pieces there weren't any like little features spray or little one offs of them doing sketches right there was nothing and it just then felt a little like and another person and another person and kinda sorta. we will hear from Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Cole bear latter worked which was really funny where they were in there scenting basically saying how's this whole no hosting gone Fauria and it was actually very funny but it made you think when you had two guys like that who owned the stage own the room no liver comedy well maybe that would have made it feel less like this I don't know seems it was like telling a forgive me just monotone yes the whole show was monotone yes now I mean I there were some great when you know wins and nominations and all that stuff but some I don't know about this will slip business for the enemies. what do you think HM I think I think well it again this is dawning on you need this morning as we like processor we why did we even though there were some cool presenters there were some funny moments etcetera why did it feel so monotone and perhaps that's it that it's just like it was almost like people were auditioning without having the host in there it was like okay we're gonna try somebody else at the microphone we're gonna try somebody else and no one did a what was it was it at the Oscars then a couple people do a longer stretch of comedy a longer bit where it was because the body come yeah they do their one category and then they go away something else that was weird. was every time someone won an award knock on the. what happened and then there was kind of silence and it was like the director wasn't saying Q. music in the right it was there was just pause and I don't know are they going to commercial or someone else knew coming out so there were these weird little silent pauses where I thought is this to be some supposed to be doing something right I wonder I wonder who directed the show last night I don't know but I wouldn't give him or her an Emmy and ever gonna mention of person we do enjoy on the show Thomas Lenin's commentary did yeah why are gonna talk about those screens were the jokes he may see now I thought that in the midst of all of that I thought that Thomas factor Clinton who is so funny in Reno nine one one and then he was more recently in the CBS sitcom with Matthew Perry the odd couple on. I thought he had a couple very funny lines which for me because here's what typically happens if you didn't watch last night the a they would present an award they would announce a winner and then while the person was walking up instead of the standard you know quote unquote the voice of god just like the faceless narrator saying this is Julia Louis Dreyfus is third nomination and second win instead of that they would just cut to Thomas Patrick Clinton just to do a little a little bit of comedy I thought the camera some funny ones that happened to work like when Chernobyl one well no they were only sometimes on camera sometimes. times they were Chernobyl wins at some point and he said Chernobyl was filmed in front. videos in front of a live studio audience I. I think it's a. there I thought some were very cream G. there is certainly more Mrs I believe with his commentary I think it was rather unnecessary what about when Phoebe Waller bridge one one of I think her second ward he said and she beat out Julia Louis Dreyfus who has like the most of all time he said if Phoebe Waller bridge once the match Julia Louis Dreyfus she'll have to live until the one hundred and seventy first enemies which will be broadcast on our sister planet. it's money call and also would Saturday Night Live won best variety sketch series yeah he said now it's time for us to invite all of these people to stage of which will recognize about four of them and as people were passing the camera I don't know you know I don't. that's blank he I don't know yeah okay I'll give you that when it was pretty funny he was right he was right I think even that speech you guys Lorne Michaels I mean it was very nice but it was just so monotone there weren't a lot of splashy moments there weren't there I would say would there is maybe seven or eight. ninety. "Hi everybody welcome to all of it thanks for spending some time with me this Friday the theme of today's show is the two thousand nineteen Emmy awards which will take place on Sunday September twenty second in Los Angeles we've been fortunate enough to have many of the nominees on the show including some of the actors and show runners from long time favorites ending their run like Veep at house of cards to new critically acclaimed shows like Russian doll and dead to me but let's start the show with the creative team behind the marvelous Mrs Maisel from Amazon all the shows leads are nominated for Emmys Rachel Brosnahan for Best Actress Marin Hinkle as Alex Borst dean both for best supporting actress and Tony sure loop for best Supporting Actor and the series for best comedy series earlier this year we spoke with the creators of the New York centric the marvelous Mrs Maisel husband wife team Dan Palladino and Amy Sherman Palladino. how do you describe Mitch Amy. you know Mitch is a are supremely confident lady of that she was always queen of her six blocks and kind of love to life and always felt like her life was perfect and she scored and she got it and then when it fell apart it revealed a whole other set of skills and thought process that she never knew was there in the first place and and the thing that we wanted to really make sure that she wasn't a woman who was dissatisfied from the very beginning staring out the window having her sherry at three o'clock in the afternoon thinking there's something better out there you know I wanted her to be someone who's like this is that I want this is great so when it left her she really felt like she had completely lost everything and then she sort of found her super power which is comedy and being able to get up on stage and talk about our life and talk about everyone else in her life with with a water to or not and it it's and she also discovered a really strong ambitious streak in her that has sort of taken over everything is serve her new Guiding Light so and she was really cute dresses like such a cute dress will raise a really tight anyway. this adorable and. Rachel Brosnahan was unknown to most people not a household name when she took the role what is it about her you think that she that she gets about this part. when she first you know. you know it's it's unusual a lot of people in our business in the comedy business are kind of like well if it's someone placed on a comic you should either be a stand up comic or offices on his done comedy Rachel had done I think almost pretty much no yeah I think rituals entire career was her being kidnapped and thrown in ditches and you know and and a lot of crying yeah on the Amazons credit you know of a lot of companies would dating and actors like this and just say we don't want to experiment with somebody trying to act funny we were it but pro to us we were really intrigued I think what she came in was again it's the confidence word midge is very confident. Rachel was very confident so that really helps like the the the the she was holding her sides and her hands were not shaking and a lot of actresses hands shake it was it was a big part to addition form we gave them three big seems to do so I think the confidence and I think the sort of she also kind of got the underlying anger that is in every comedian every comedian as you sort of innately got that and she's just this incredible actress who who pulled off of the the start of of being a realistic stand up comic going through all the phases of learning it it was a really it was a really tough thing to do and I think just the confidence is what really sold it and images confidence that confidence there's always make her a hundred percent likable. now and and we were actually interested in that because we had come from you know you spend years on network television with the like how she can't she can't raise your voice that. make sure she doesn't wear red. and like all the hair. like a book you know it's like the last thing in the world I everyone here again in my entire life is is the female character likable it's just fishy interesting she viable is her journey something that people want to watch and the great thing about again Rachel Brosnahan who is kind of just a. steam roller through life she wasn't interested in being likable she was interested in playing somebody very interesting and very different from what she had played before and we got lucky that because. you don't want to have to spend half your time talking your actors into it doesn't matter if you're likable it's okay if you raise your voice it doesn't matter you're a human being sometimes human beings are likable ninety percent of them are never like a you know at least you're going to be likable like fifty sixty percent of the time that's not bad by human standards so and man it been pulling it off in in T. V. for many many years al from dead wood everyone loved him Tony soprano everyone loved him Walter white everyone loved him if you hated those guys personally you wouldn't you would not watch the show even though they were often despicable. there's been an obvious double standard for women characters in movies and TV and it's it so we we wanted to make sure that you saw the foibles of this character to that you saw that she was human and sometimes very very selfish and sometimes very very self centered and maybe not the best mother all the time as. your mother a status was so different back then we want to reflect that you didn't hover over your child and you didn't necessarily need to tell your child you love dumb every day and every hour so yes so what what men have gotten away with for a long time ambition women is something that I think a lot of times people think is an attractive trait and yet a man ambition is how you get what you want in life you said something so interesting in your answer about actresses being concerned about the perception of not being likable even though they're playing a part it's not really an issue for young actresses that you run out absolutely absolutely I mean part of. which interesting that I found of because I tend to write characters who at some point Danielle just it's it's some point usually in the pilot they're going to yell at somebody and I have found that it's a hard thing for a lot of actresses to do because they are so aware of the fact that that behind the scenes a lot of times they are judged on how feminine you aren't how likeable you are and raising your voice and yelling is not considered a likeable trait in a woman and a lot of times you have to really tell actresses like yeah yeah it's okay yeah your best. yeah your husband left you if there's any time when you can help perhaps this is a time so it's it is a thing and hopefully the more that of hearts are being written for actresses that aren't being decided on the level of like ability but more on the level like what is the journey how interesting is this person do they have a story to tell maybe actresses in the future will not be coming to the table with that sort of baggage on them but it is it is an issue and not original right right right. I don't like I'll just go out there and you want me to kill a kitten all there I'm good my guess Amy Sherman Palladino and Dan Palladino one of these I think I interesting about the show the many interesting things that I like the sort of anthropological of excavation of New York City and this particular family at this time there are a lot of details about this affluent Jewish family on the upper side downs like we're the dad works and how they keep the house what was it about this time period that you thought was really right and if you could share a couple of details that you put in the scripts and in the family the family come composition to let us know more about this family at this time well it was the time period was was really picked up because comedy was starting to shift a little bit and started to become a little bit more talking about real things and life and politics and family and sexuality and they hadn't been before calmly had been a little bit more like take my wife plays out so if we felt like that time period would be an interesting time to to throw someone who's just starting a career in comedy because it's straddling that old school new school world and especially a woman where there just weren't a lot of women in comedy there there are it's tough for a woman a comedy now but back then it was it was a nightmare and to put somebody who is finding her voice so actually talking about things is going to be important to her and not pretending to be character or a you know quaint or ugly you know not putting a weird ball on her you know and talk about the various you know like that she's actually going to go and talk about being young being possibly. divorced possibly what does she do now children sure she'd been a mother she ever thought about before that these are things that she wants to be able to talk about on stage that time period felt right for that yeah on as as far as the family in the whole setting in a week we always kept in mind that like this is a generation and the time when World War two like almost all the young man walking around were World War two veterans when Zach Levi came on last year and placed the doctor Benjamin. I don't know if we mention it but we told him he is a World War two veteran so it was so we always kept that in mind and and of course for a Jewish family we always keep in mind that the Holocaust was fifteen years before and that also not only was it the heartbreak of that era and of what happened but also this is a Jewish family now that is in it that is prosperous feeling safe feeling affluent and is really becoming a part of a natural part of the American fabric so that's something that we always kind of keeping my to its end and of course image kind of blows it up with the sub with with because of what happened to her she decides to take a path that this family was not expecting that this family did not want so everything's kind of shaken up but it by but we but it is a family that was just sort of becoming like a truck like a like the true American family back then. I guess Amy Sherman Palladino and Dan Palladino I I heard you say it earlier I when I was watching a round table interview that you're on of writers just your joy of not being in a network no I got it in the positive shall. so. for civilians yes. let's say. you were doing this show for a major network. think about a scene or something that you wanted to do that and how that would have gone at the network what this show could not have been done at the now. would they would never have to it as in a gazillion years they all would have said oh my god we want to do that show and that would be the end of it they may have even gone so far as to pick up a pilot and then you try to cast it and that would have been the end I mean it just it it and then they would Daniel like if if when they call you to tell you that your project not going forward the first thing they say to people like us is I love the writing I love the writing is so amazing and I love them and I look like we sunk. we did we just cancel it's all over you know we're still smokes with under words but it's really like it there's a lot of reasons why this character when you know because you see this Karen you think she's so sweet she saw like a ball and she's it her her journey is interesting to me but they would not like a lot of aspects of it they would not like her and bisschen they it I'm not saying traditionally you know the networks I I don't know who's of the numbers numbers now because we haven't worked on a network and in ages but but we came up in yeah we came up in the system where basically what I could tell you exactly how old we are. hundred thirty gas for the same vintage and something like that yeah but but but we came up a time with basically there were like four networks and it was a an extra remotely conservative business.

"You know, the Golden Globes. I'm sorry. I I guess I'm sorry. Well, not sorry. I what I'm not sorry. I didn't see it. You never watching out very often. I'm glad that Rachel Brosnahan one. For the marvelous MRs Mazel, I have some quibbles with that show some things about it that I kinda quibble about. But but I do like her performance. It's well done. I like I like Alex Borst team's performance a lot. She was nominated as well. But she didn't win and I like Tony shalhoub performance quite a bit about. I'm glad that re-. Rachel Brosnahan one. If you watch the marvelous MRs Mazel, by the way, others an actor playing Lenny Bruce in it. And he's he's very good to he's way better looking than the real money. Good looking. I actually Lenny Bruce. But a lot of the routines that they show him doing. They are pretty much Lenny Bruce. Yeah. They are pretty much word for word. Lenny Bruce routines in the second second season. He does a whole thing about where he sings and things about his wife. That's a that's an actual. That's an actual Lenny Bruce bit. I was curious. So I looked it up. You see Lenny Bruce doing it? So, but you know, who the big winner at the Golden Globes was last night. Well, one of the big winners was of course, Pete Davidson Saturday Night Live because he was at an after party Golden Globes.

"So let's hit briefly ability said you wanted to take off some of the biter messy nissim flaws yeah what about through a couple of those aren't one of them is is her husband jolt loser utter loser i don't care about him you know she is better off without him and the fact that the show keep spending time with him after their marriage falls apart in the first episode i understand it sort of dramatically because this is a thing that would happen in their marriage but god i don't care about him at all and the season keep spending time with them it's not a good character and i don't know if that's on michaels egg the actor plays emmer or just the fact that they are writing him as this big drip but that that is definitely a drag and there are some stuff in where the party of and got into yet where they go back and forth a little bit on comedy process like you'll see her develop the active hit some speed bumps and then the alex borst in character will try to help her through it ended at other times they just kind of race past it because they were have you know some syed where people are bantering again end up its amy cher repel dina writing it i'm not going to object to that necessarily no the i mean the bancer a lot of times even things that don't see to be directly related to the plot even when it's just two people talking about whatever's going on is funny in interesting you kind of think like right oh yeah we need to go forward the pla i was for that yet but yet at the show as a real gift for dialogue in a way that like i'm trying to think of other shows that have as good a gift for that.
