We gotta talk about that by the time this episode comes out, it's probably already been in a race. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. But we just kind of have to talk about the British Grand Prix. Yeah. Oh, my word. So maybe the best race I've seen? Well, you know, I think you're right. It was actually. But I can't remember which one it was, but it was one of the first races I watched once I really properly started paying attention to F one, was when was it Hamilton had like a half dead tire or something like that and max came screaming around the last corner? Do you know what I'm talking about? Is the first race of the 2020 season? Everyone's tires are exploding. One on three wheels. Because managing it with just talking about this because I was reminded from this episode like episode I love our cool new episodes sometimes I do that by excellent. I was reminded by this past race Silverstone because obviously there was all the drama which probably get to they were covering the cars up, right? And I remembered went during that race. If it was, I think it was the season opener for 2020. I think you might be right. It wasn't just how there were tires blowing up all over the place. And Pirelli, whenever the cars were coming in were covering the tires so people couldn't see them. Oh yes, I do remember that. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So it reminded me of that. Yeah, yeah, I had forgotten about that. But yeah, so that was a really exciting race. When Hamilton's limping across the finish line in max is doing everything to get in front of him. Actually, the race in which max clinched the championship was also really exciting. I know it's a little bit of a sore subject. I'm sorry, but that was exciting. I didn't see that one. Oh, that's right. I forgot because you were. I was like, that's right. I had forgotten that. That was a really good race. But this one, the British Grand Prix was very good and possibly the best race I've seen. It all started all went wrong in turn one when there was a horrific crash. Just a truly terrible crash and like what was it three or four different cars all got taken out all at the same time, but was it yoga on you? I'm butchering its name. I'm so sorry. Thank you. Ended up we later found out, although they didn't show the replay understandably for a long time, ended up getting flipped onto the halo onto the thing that you can think of it as kind of a mini roll cage. It's flipped onto the halo and is skidding at what must have been 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 miles an hour, off of the track through gravel. He's upside down, mind you. Off the track through gravel, then hits did he hit the tire wall or did he like somehow leap up? So it bounces like either right before, into the tire wall, ends up hitting the metal fencing that's there to protect the spectators and slides down in the gap between the tire wall and the fencing, and that's where he was stuck for like ten minutes. It was terrifying to watch. And they didn't show it, thankfully, until we knew that he was at least okay. And it turns out, I guess he was actually pretty much fine. But at the time, we didn't know he was. He's fine. He was back in the paddock by the end of the race. Oh, I missed that. I didn't realize he had already made all his way back. But Alex album. Yeah, yeah, which I saw that he tweeted that he's okay, but that I did not realize because it seemed just watching it that it seemed to me anyway. That his crash was way worse from the looks of it. But as it turns out, it didn't seem to. A heads up for you. This is mainly a thing I know because I am a communicator about Formula One now. There's some fun thing. So why do you prefer is a customer? It's his full name. That's not correct. Oh, good to know. All right, well I appreciate the heads up. They shorten it for the. Race graphic, so it's a Z HO. But if you are talking about him, you wouldn't just say like Louis. Zhou guang yu, the whole thing. Okay. Good to know. Thank you. I don't know enough about this, so but I believe with the way that you would say in Chinese there isn't like one name that's the first name. I got you. So. This one. Oh, I really am. So the driver for AlphaTauri. Alfa Romeo. You'll get there. You will get that, you know? I am a mess. Well anyways, so the crash was bad. Apparently we messed with my head as well. But anyway, so then most of the race I thought it was fine. It was good. I mean, it was not terribly remarkable, but then all of a sudden with like ten, 12 laps left, who was it that there was an oak on had a fuel pump issue, I believe. And he just stops dead in the middle of the track. It's not his fault. So now we get a safety car. And all of a sudden, everyone's bunched up again and basically everyone except leclerc, curiously, gets new tires, and now we have a race. And so it's so funny to me that all of the people, like the old time F one people who are so anti sprint races, they're all like cackling with glee about this ten lap basically sprint at the end of the race. I'm not sure why it's okay here, but not okay when it's before the race, but that's neither here nor there. I know what you're saying. It's like such a complicated, like this is so much complication around that. I know what you mean. Whatever. Anyway, so it ends up that everyone gets bunched up. And as I'm watching this, suddenly Lewis, who had started, I don't know, where did he where was his 5th or 6th? And suddenly he's in fourth, which I mean for Louis is not surprised. At one point. And then. Well, sure. But then in this last batch of laps, he pulled this absolutely perfect move, which I think if you're a racing driver, I'm sure it was not that remarkable, but to me, I was like, oh, I've almost losing the freaking minds. It was. I mean, and it wasn't just because of what Lewis is doing. Like that just like the three of them so it was Perez leclerc and Hamilton. It's just going backwards and forwards on each other for a couple. It was just it's maybe the most exciting thing in a good way I've seen in racing. Because emotionally, I think I felt stronger emotions. George filling in for Lewis and having all that bad luck. Sure. Lando, spin out in the wet. Oh yes, yes. But I think that might have been some of the best racing that I've seen. No, I totally hear you. And those last few laps were so, so good. And it was so funny because the footage is kind of the broadcast is kind of focusing on what was it leclerc and science that were racing right before he cut in. It was clear in somebody that were like right racing wheel to wheel, right next to each other, going around a turn, going wide around a turn, and I'm tunnel visioned on the two of them because I don't think I'm not thinking about anything else that's going on in the broadcast. It's not tunnel visioned on them, but it's mostly focusing on them. And all of a sudden, Lewis comes in shorts and the happy sense shorts the turn and ends up in front of the both of them.

"Make next to no alterations to the track. Can't expand anything. It's beholden to the cars and the fact that it's glitzy and glamorous and everybody wants to be there. But as we saw with Miami, there are other tracks that can attract that same attention that makes Monaco commercially viable for Formula One, and obviously it's the one track on the calendar that doesn't pay a race host fee. And I know for a fact that Formula One isn't too happy about that. So it's a case of am I looking forward to it, yes. Do I want to be convinced that it's brilliant? Yes. Will I be convinced? I don't know. Just very quickly I'm pretty sure Miami doesn't pay a fee and Vegas won't either because that has actually been promoted by F one itself. But that obviously historic historically Monaco is always the one that didn't pay a fee. Historic keynote, but again, because F one have invested investment commercial investments elsewhere to do with both of those Grand Prix, whereas with Monaco, I don't believe it's the same setup, correct? So it Monaco's had a free pass for decades. Thanks to Bernie eccleston, but yeah, it's an interesting one and I'm sure for a lot of listeners, the fact that I am so vehemently against racing in Monaco causes a bit of a bit of an issue, but a bit of a topic of debate. I work quickly into them and say that I think that is going to be shifting moving forward. I think that Formula One probably, yeah. We're no longer in a position now with Formula One needs Monaco dare I say. I don't think everything's going to come up to standards, so yeah, I'd be interested if any changes we see moving forward there. A couple of things. One, this is definitely a debate to be had next Sunday after the Monaco grand team. Which I'll be there doing the race support on the drive rating, so I won't be there to have it with you, sadly, but just two points actually that you may just things that I am looking forward to in Monaco that are actually bad things, well, subjectively bad. One is that it will flares on power and Verstappen is following. It's going to be 78 laps of Verstappen chat with down the radio, which I think will be quite entertaining. But also, and this is a much bigger issue. These cars can't hit the curbs. They can not hit the curbs at all. The discussion in pre season testing was, I think, was it Vettel said it would be easy to learn the track on a bus than in these Formula One car. They are almost undrivable at not on drivable, but they are compared to what they were like. That slow speed awful over curves awful. So I wouldn't be shocked if it's a shunt galore and a lot of criticism comes from that. Well, I mean, if a chunk of law I don't know and it causes a massive mixer in standing and I don't know like Alex album wins a race out of nowhere. I'm sure it will be lauded as one of the races of the season, but that's not why I watch Formula One. You know, it's okay. I mean, we always joked about Baku, right? Like back he's crazy and anyone can win back who because we never know what's going to happen. But if we're honest with ourselves, Baku is not held in the same esteem as Monaco. So it's like, we don't want it to become a farcical race. If we're going to be that precious about Monaco, we don't want it to be a fast. But again, just these cars are just another let's see if I'm proved right or wrong or Alex to your point, whether you're approved right or wrong. The F one is divorcing Monaco more and more is pushing it away and it's meant to be its duel in The Crown, but interestingly, with the vaguest edition especially, could that become with the likes of Miami as well. Is F one looking for a new jewel. If F one's divorcing Monaco are looked to take it to some relationship therapy if that's okay. It is an identity crisis. I am under no illusion that there is. People always ask me in Luke and I have had this debate since we've known each other. Yeah, my mind's changed about ourselves now. I must say. Okay, that's good. But we had the same conversation about whether Silverstone, is it the nostalgia, is it the fact that it's our home Grand Prix that kind of clouds our judgment when we're saying do these races deserve to be on or off the calendar. But at least we get racing at Silverstone, even if it's not always the most exciting Grand Prix of the season. Unless the two type fires come together. But yeah, I think it's not enough. It's not enough anymore for races just go, well, we've always been here. Or, you know, the history argument for me is one of the most frustrating and stupid arguments to host a race.

I'm Chris medlin, and today I'm joined by new Mercedes driver George Russell, to discuss the options that were presented to him as a junior, the contract offer that had Mercedes saying he would never drive for them and the crucial races that led to a seat with Williams and ultimately promotion to a world championship winning team. Even if progress looks easy from the outside, it's never quite as simple as it seems. George thanks so much for joining us at the end of what's been a crazy season. And one when you're about to step up to Mercedes, but we're going to look at the path that has taken you there. And the crucial performances, moments, people that have played a key part in that happening. And the first question really is in an earlier one of these podcasts in this series, Alex Albon says he basically was the talent scout that picked you out for the Intrepid driver program. That he was yeah. So is that true? That is a memory that has passed by on me, but I do recall, so Intrepid driver program was a team manufacturer in go kart in that in between 2010 and 2013 they were the team to be with. And they would do these days an assessment of a load of drivers Alex was their driver at retirement I arrived and you do a bit of an assessment and how do you fair against world champion at the time, Alex album? So maybe he made my career. It's all talk about me helping him give a Williams drive, maybe it all started vice versa. Yeah, you've just repaid the favor. Absolutely. Absolutely. But yeah, he did say that you were tough to shake off so you were a year below him, I think. Yeah, I've been I think actually two years below Alex Alex is two years older than me. He was definitely always at least being one year ahead of me. So until it was our formula three days, we never really raced each other because he was always in the junior category when I was in the mini category. He was in the senior category when I was in the junior category. So I think that's why we were quite good friends as well growing up because we never had that rival rivalry because we were never competing in the same category. Did you have rivalries with other drivers though? Was the only one that would stand out when you first started in karting or even in cards that you like I've got to beat that guy to really impress? I'd say my biggest rivalry go kartin was a guy called Ben who sort of came through the ranks with me and he was my rival from my very first championships I was racing. It was called WTP, which I believe stood for watching the pennies. Which is quite funny. And then into coma cadet and then through to KF three, there was always this bit of a rivalry. And we had quite a few incidents along the way. And then we ended up being teammates in formula three and became good friends. So it's, again, it was interesting how these things turn around and he's actually been doing a lot of simulator work for Mercedes. I'm not even sure I'm allowed to say that, but I'm sure it's fine. We'll find out afterwards that he really, really great guy. And a really great driver. I'm sorry, total ringing. So the deal is off. Now, you mentioned KF three there actually won the European Championship in 2012. And then look like 2013 was a bit of a tougher year kind of what happened there because for a lot of drivers it seems to be largely like momentum builds early on and if you get a stumble for some they don't go much further. So what happened to you? That was a tough year. So I had a couple of different options when I moved up from a junior category into the senior one. So I won the European Championship in KF three in 2011 and 2012. And then in 2013, when I moved to a senior category, it wasn't too sure which route to take in terms of which team to join and I had an offer from a factory team to have a factory drive with Bill motor sport. So it was a manufacturer. And just going through a really tough period at the time, they were the team to be within the Czech categories, the gearbox category. But my KF category, they only had three carts on the grid out of 80 or 90 however many were all of these events and just really struggled. So that was a real learning year for me. And that was probably two seasons I looked back on in my career. 2013 and 2015, which I think really molded me as a driver to learn to deal with not winning and to learn to deal with disappointment. Because up until that moment, I'd had a pretty without trying to sound an hour, we're going to have a pretty flawless junior career. One in everything I raced 2013 was the first year that I didn't win anything. And that was quite a shock to the system. But I guess it taught me to be more resilient and taught me to work hard and look at things from a different angle in a.

"Got to think just on this one occasion I just need to leave him that little bit more room. Now Hamilton equally has gone right. I can not afford to back out here. He's going to go. We saw it in the sprint race, Hamilton makes a poor start from pole, and that brilliant Republican is brilliant proposition that's never recognized by the history books. He knows the Red Bull's gone. So we have to go for the move and he's not backing down. He knows his app is not giving up. And if they collide in that instance, I think Lewis knows, ultimately, there's a greater risk of what happening to Verstappen happening. Even though had it not been red flag, I think Mercedes was that afterwards, there was enough damage on Hamilton's left front that he would have had to retire as well. It's great. They even get bot ass to come alongside and look for some see if he can see any damage. He can't do it under safety carry can't see it, because obviously he's quite difficult to pick up those things. But anyway, I love the fact that max is an extremely hard racer. He's an extremely fast racer. He's very interesting. He's very, very interesting, and he's absolutely brilliant. But he just needed to rein it back. That little bit. And we're making so much easier. I think he wins the title, a race early, if that doesn't happen. He wouldn't have known what was going to happen next as we come on to in Hungary. But yeah, just he just needed to just add that little element to his game of this is how you win championships. You just have to just take sometimes that. Okay, I've got it back out here. Even though, as it said, Hamilton was the ultimate aggressor, is that there in that instance, max didn't need to match him with that aggression. Alex, I'll stay with you. I'm just the person who pushed these podcasts together. I'm essentially a fan even I work at auto sport. You guys are journalists, you're independent, you report on what happens. You dig out the stories as well. And it's one of the reasons I on the podcast after Silverstone. I invited on one of our Dutch colleagues because we have part of a big organization. I invited them on to talk about the difference between how the fans are starting to see it because my feeling just as a fan was that something turned here and I don't like how it's feeling. Social media, I mean, anyway, but still, Alex, did you get the same feeling that actually with that incident? Just the two sets of fans, just like started to turn as well. It didn't feel very nice anymore. Massively. I think first of all, it wasn't a nice accident. You never like, you never you never like to see a big crash like that, especially not when the drive has to go to hospital to get checked. I think this happens even talked about he was told by a doctor that he can't look at any TV screens on laptop screen, so a few days because we just don't know how it's going to work. The threat of concussion and things like that. And ultimately, he was fine. Basically, there was not a nice incident. And the problem was was that Red Bull it was just weird because Red Bull ultimately went from being the victim in that scenario to just come in across really badly and really needlessly his leak said that I'll get Alex Albon to recreate things, even though it added nothing. I didn't know information whatsoever. It was just like, what are you doing here? It was like even during the red flag when they didn't know how the race was going to turn out. You've got horns ridiculous comments about you don't put a weird upside at the inside of crops. I'm sorry. What are you on earth are you talking about? Some of the best passes in F one history at hatch have come at that corner. It's totally silly. And then you've got helmet marker saying Hamilton should be banned for an incident where he was only found to be predominantly at fault. It's like, come on, what are you doing here? But that has a knock on effect because of the way that the world is now. These hot takes, it blows up on social media and it makes people it makes it upsets me because I think people totally have react to them, but it makes people very cross and very angry. And it was an emotionally charged incident and there needed to be some cooler heads equally later on Red Bull even more incensed by Lewis Hamilton and the way he celebrated the way Mercedes celebrated and I can kind of see that their point there you know if you've got a driver in hospital you'd be upset at seeing the rival celebrating. But how do we know the Mercedes knew that that's what we've gone on? You can't assume these things, but you're right. It did take a nasty turn. I think contact in those conditions is always going to make that happen. It just needed a bit of a bit of a bit of breathing, but it's a super close challenge at fight. I think you got some genuine reactions there, and it was, as I said, it was all very, very interesting. And look, you guys are both got big social media followings, but you notice on your social media people don't always say the nicest stuff, right? Yeah, and it's funny it's head Ashley because yeah, even last night I was doomed squad and we photos and the best thing. And I found I found actually something like a very in and it's not really solving, but she's in the wake of our recent coverage, a very, very personal comment directed at me. And I really and it really, really hit a sore point. And I really woke up saying I was just like, it upsets you. You don't want to see that abuse on social media, and I think that that obviously, I mean, that's a consequence of everything happened in Abu Dhabi, but it was the first time it happened. And it ultimately, there was then that fallout of races abuse that was put towards Lewis Hamilton that was shocking a bar and just has no place in society and our sport in this world. And it really just was awful to see at points. And we saw the F one community come together condemn the comments that were being made by these people hiding behind avatars on social media. Red Bull Mercedes FI F one, they all released a joint statement condemning it. The thing is you've got to remember when you put out comments into the world and you say things and heat at the moment. What, what is it fueling? What is actually what is the bigger picture? And it was, yeah, it just really was where the tighter race turned nasty and we saw these comments being put out by Red Bull about Hamilton's driving sands and everything like that. And in the end it led to obviously they pushed for the ride over those herd in Hungary and ultimately thrown out because their only bit of evidence was we've got Alex album to recreate the line..

"There's enough in there to say where it wasn't his fault, but equally. He puts the car with the car goes, if that makes sense. So you could chalk that up as another down now. And it certainly costs in points because Norris is so close, Mercedes can't just let Bottas sit behind Hamilton. They have to construct his championship and pays them back later on in the season. They have to take the two four as opposed to the three four. But if Norris wasn't there and being so brilliant, Hamilton would have finished second, even though the damage car. So yeah, it's just interesting the little that the little subplots of those races. So for those keeping score, French GP Verstappen, Hamilton, Perez, styrian GP Verstappen Hamilton Bottas, an Austrian GP Verstappen, Bottas and then Lando that third place. It was the Austrian one, was that the outpouring of love on the radio from Lewis about Lando, was that Austria? Yeah, as a good ten or 15 laps that Hamilton takes to get past Norris after Perez has gone off and got the penalty when he's running second is absolutely cleared off. Yeah, there's Lewis gets goes by Hamilton says great driver, Lando, which I think is interesting asking nice about that afterwards because I think also he was so annoyed about that penalty. I think all his answers were sort of had the sort of cloud of that hanging over them because he was so annoyed he didn't get second place. But yeah, he sort of, I don't know, he's kind of interesting. You put that to the drivers. There's such competitive animals. They're not exactly going to go, oh my goodness, how wonderful it is to hear that from doing Hamilton. No, I should just like go, okay. All right, well look, we definitely can't wrap Silverstone up into any group of races because we need to talk about that. Lots of interesting things about that Saturday spring race, of course, at Silverstone, but it was the cops incident that, after that race when we did a podcast with our own Ben Anderson from GP racing magazine, who has raced through that corner three wide, who says, I think he agrees with Kevin that a perhaps a wiser head on Verstappen would have realized there's going to be nowhere for Lewis to go look is that with all the hindsight now recording yourself of the season, is that a fair criticism of max that he could have given more room or was he always going to race in there and try and close Lewis off, what do you think? Both, I think, yeah, he could have given Lois more room, but as we saw throughout the season, he wasn't going to was going to make that as hard as possible on your max to him. It was his corner as we saw from all the fallout that followed, and for all the comments by Christine Horner and helmet Marko calling Hamilton desperate amateurish. You don't stick a car up the inside at cops and all of that. It was, yeah, it was very, I think this was the first major flashpoint of the season where things got nasty and things spilled over and yeah it was a big big incident and I think that looking back even with hindsight, I think the way that the steward handled it, I think that was correct. I think that Hamilton was predominantly at fault very marginally, but I think he was more to blame than max was for that incident, but was not fully to blame. Again, the steward's report said predominantly, so did put some of the blame on max. Yeah, and I think that everything that followed with the God that Alex album reconstruction on a filming day and everything, it was a pretty crazy story and it sort of dominated F one for a good couple of weeks where we were just sort of seeing everything go back and forth and the aggression from Red Bull as well in its comments about Lois and his move. But yeah, I think it was, I think, I agree, a max definitely, yeah, he could have left more room. I mean, Alex mentioned in Spain earlier where Hamilton thought was going to happen. I was like, oh, I better get out of this. Max, yeah, okay, so much higher speed, but he could have definitely left the bigger space for Hamilton, but that wasn't going to happen. We know through this season how max has been in those wheels 12 fights like he's very aggressive and he makes very clear look I'm not moving aside. And that resulted in a huge huge accident. Alex watershed moment? Absolutely because of how much it changes the points gap as Luke said 32 points after Austria, a massive Verstappen is walking to the title. But what happens at Silverstone is the reason why he doesn't end up as the number one driver in our top 50 rankings in my F one top ten and why I still believe that it was ultimately the difference in why he wasn't for me, the best driver of the season. And it's because of what Lewis Hamilton has shown, time and time again in his career and he showed it in this season. If you want to win a world title, there are moments where you have to go, I have to back out of this. I have to take 18 points and not 25. And bearing in mind Verstappen only what three or four races earlier has lost 25 points in Baku. Yes, he was gifted, Lewis Hamilton, not winning 25 points in Baku by the magic button incident, but he's got to think just on this one occasion I just need to leave him that little bit more room. Now Hamilton equally has gone right. I can not afford to back out here..

"So they've got the expertise. They've got the know how to make it count. And if Red Bull drops the ball a little bit then there'll be that profit. Obviously, on paper, yeah, it should suit Red Bull, but Mercedes has done it all before. So we'll have to wait and see. It's exciting though, isn't it? It's very exciting. I mean, we are literally getting down to the wire with this. And max is still so cool and calm and collected about it or even though, you know, everyone else is sort of saying, you know, it's really the momentum is really getting behind you and it's just so level headed about it, which does make it even more exciting. I am intrigued to see how the next few races unfold, as you said, Mercedes have done this, it's not the first time. But it's getting close. It's getting very, very close, and it's exciting for us. Let's move further down the field though. To Pierre gasly, who finished an excellent fourth, sort of a lonely race for him. I feel like we have this conversation about Pierre a lot. So we're not going to dwell on it too much, but once again, just solid and consistent and really there's nothing negative really to say about him, is he? He's just doing what he needs to do, but, you know, as we know the future wise, which I know is a controversial topic, some people are like, you know, keep them in Alfa tauri. That's why he's doing well. But a lot of people are saying his performance and his consistency warrants a better seat. What did you make of his weekend Jess will come to you fast? Yeah, I mean, it's kind of bad that we're just kind of getting used to Pierre gasly putting in these amazing performances, but not really having too much to show for it other than obviously a great point hall for alpha Tori, his teammate DNF aside. But on his side of the garage, it's looking it's looking great. I mean, the pace that he had today was incredible. You know, the Ferraris were saying they just couldn't get anywhere close to him. They even had Ferrari having team orders to see if science could eke out more pace out of him, but he just couldn't get anywhere near, I think, just under 7 seconds was as close as they could get in those final stages to him. So yeah, lonely, but very solid drive. And again, I guess it's the age old problem with Formula One, there are only sets, only so many seats. And so many, I guess premier tier seats available. He's tried it once in Red Bull. He didn't get on with it. So whether or not it would be a good place for him to go back to, probably not. You would argue. So for me, I think I heard Jenson Button saying this on the commentary as well. For me, the only thing that he can do is stay where he is and hope that with the new regulations, Alfa tauri gets even more competitive and he can kind of think about winning races with them, but he needs to get himself to a manufacturer, I think. But again, not too many positions available to him there, either. So is the age old problem that there's not enough seats in Formula One? There are enough teams in Formula One. They're under manufacturers in Formula One. So unless something is Formula One, a lot of crazy things happen. We've seen surprise and shock moves from people, I guess, you know, Daniel Ricciardo moving to Renault was a massive shock, no one really expected that. Could we see Pierre gasly Alpine? I'm not sure if that's a great move for him, but yeah, just it almost kind of there's nothing else for us to say, really. We know how great a driver he is. But he's not got much else to think about or go to. And he looks much better for it. It looks like he's sort of come out the other side of the difficulty she had earlier in the year and he just needs to sort of have an opportunity to build on that. And today could have been that, you know, he didn't have engine penalties and that kind of thing. And I think in qualifying yesterday in Q three, alpha towery has contended the cenote was aware of the situation. He had the Perez and for staff and behind him. And because he was got through to Q three because they felt that gasoline might need a toe. He was sort of done his bit and was just sort of trying to get off the track and I think Perez saw him ahead. Maybe sort of got a little bit distracted and had a little bit of a brain fade if you like and sort of followed him into that runoff area. And I don't think so notice to blame for that. I really don't. Whatever your sort of opinion on whether it should have been in Q three or not. I'll tell you how to express purpose for him being there. They got him through. So yeah, I think Red Bull has been very, very unfair on him. We know that Yuki is he's still in his first year he's made mistakes. He's learning, that's kind of what you do as a rookie. You should get a free pass and you first year to, you know, start the season off making a few mistakes. So you know where the limits are. But I think that sort of unfairly got him a reputation and it was very easy for rebel to kind of pin the tail on that particular donkey. And yeah, it was just unfortunate positioning at the time, I think. And then that first corner, it was just a mess. Because what it was him archon and Schumacher kind of three wide in that corner. Him and Schumacher kind of pins it on, or can't go out of it absolutely fine and I don't entirely know how. But Snyder and Schumacher were left by the wayside and that was it for them. Three which is quite remarkable. So i think building the qualify accession which starts arguing from the end of f. b. three and two qualifying as something. He's he's very very strong. Then i think with me in particular. Because i wouldn't really say it's like a specific trend of driving like he's always for example he's always breaking later or he's always carry more minimum speedo. He's always getting better exes. I think it's just the consistency of how he builds each lap. Sometimes we could do a great. I lap and i could be very close or sometimes faster on a first lap but then i though improve as much as i need to on the next lap also improve but just not finding as as much time so i. We've been a bit critical of race direction recently. And i don't know if this was a mistake all north but the shot down the stray as louis was coming out of the pits and it was just held and there was nothing that i no 'cause it was just shut down the straits and then you saw louis appear in the pit lane and then you saw max a pair coming down the street. I genuinely thought that was a brilliant of tv direction whether it was mental like than on purpose or no. I genuinely my heart was going. I was always stood up going. Oh my gosh. because you couldn't tell how close they were and i was. I wasn't looking at track delta's either so i couldn't see like how much max closing in so for a viewer. It was highly dramatic. I did enjoy that quo. It was dramatic. Always exactly the same. You couldn't quite make out until they came to approaching the corner and she's like oh my god. How is this gonna unravel. But the other thing i wanted to touch them was of course we had is very angry. Ray j united in more abusive To solve they didn't listen to him and it was so hard lewis at the end. Saying you know. "Debate because their resources because they stray we've talked about their driver lineup or we haven't talked about. Is there restructuring within the team and okay. And then we have to feel like there aren't too many of those left in his career so certainly worth celebrating to see that. So sebastian Vattel at number five for me you know and this is actually going to spur bigger formula one conversation and we ended up taking the whole segment for it. But i'm gonna go to baku city for my number five as well I got no complaints with your number five. I actually from my number five once again as in last week. I'm going with red bull formula one the team You know obviously you know perez with that victory as a big moment for his career He needed that. I think You know he's kind of been in the shadow of for for a while now. And but i had to go the red bluff one because i had had that what race one if you laps to go. He's leading fluke tire failure and now all of a sudden he finishes what i think officially eighteenth something like that You know tough break for them. I mean but red bull formula one is proved especially in the last couple of rounds like they are bringing the fight. You know what i mean. They they've got a team that can compete for this championship and for stopping thankfully for him. Hamilton had problems. They still retains the lead in the drivers championship. So we're that shootout that we're expecting is still going to be there but you know i'm just looking down this. You know this entire race you know. And and you mentioned battle I'm looking at constructor point driver standings and you know another guy that pops out of my mind as lando norrish eastern their fourth. You know and. I don't know that anybody thought norris would be sitting fourth in the driver's championship. You know this this deep into the season so the the thing is formula one this year chris and obviously i had red bull. F one at five. But i'm excited for the first time in a long time. You don't know what's going to happen on any given weekend. That podium isn't set you know. We've got four teams. That are really you know kind of front. Running teams five ish. Maybe like i dunno. It's got me excited to tune in every week because the processional is gone. I mean f- one. These guys are driving and they're driving the wheels off these cars and we have a true battle. You know upfront and the one. We haven't had a long time absolutely. I mean it's and it's funny that you mentioned that and certainly Red bull racing as a team at number five is a worthy pick. And i think a lot of what this season is actually gonna come down to is the battle between the second drivers at red bull and mercedes because this seems to be the most evenly matched that maximum staff and lewis hamilton. Have ever been no doubt. The cars seem to have their various strengths and weaknesses but as a whole they tend to be on par with one another. So now it's a matter of which second driver is actually going to be able to take advantage of the situation that they're in and rise to the occasion for years. That's been voluntary botas. He's been able to pick off a couple of wins year. we've seen some seasons. Where early on. He seemed like oh he might actually be a threat for the championship. He might pull nico rosberg this year but hasn't and then gets tobacco and lays one of the biggest eggs i think of his career certainly with mercedes just did not have it for whatever reason it certainly lewis didn't in practice either but lewis at the very least was in contention for a podium to the very end sergio perez on the other hand. We thought it was going to be the eleven billionth red bull second driver to fill out of that spot because that seems to be what happens on that team they go through them. They always have but you know now. There's a second red bull driver who is able to consistently put it on the or who seems like they could consistently put it on top of the podium for the first time since you know the vessel ricardo days. They haven't really you know i. It's always seemed like it's only one guy who can really win races with that team at any given time and if peres can do that i mean yes he's going to be looked at is the number to you know he's always going to be looked at is the number two there because max is the guy but if peres can consistently win a couple of races a year i mean i think that's what's expected of him at this point in his career. You know i. I mean him. Winning with racing point last year in the first place was a lifeline of his career. I mean everybody thought he was on his way out. People thought he was going to indycar. People thought you know in many ends up alex albums seat and has already proven in the end to be an upgrade their but rebels always had that issue. You know for quite some time now getting a second driver who works as a second driver. And if sergio perez can do that then you know then we finally have a return to form for that team for the first time. Really i mean i. I said to winners. I'm gonna bring the basketball analogy. And i think formula one drivers have always struggled with us and probably the one that accepted his role the most. You know he still put together a hall of fame career. And i think formula one these guys get overshadowed by greatness and obviously you know that you can't say is one of the all time greats. But he's got the makings of one of the all time greats. Now you know. I have no idea what the next five to ten years. They're gonna hold for him so we're definitely getting ahead of ourselves but i'm just saying like i can see the next five to ten years especially after lewis bows out You know this being the max for step and series you know and so. It's tough to be in that second seat. It's tough to be in that role. But her eskin. He could be a phenomenal driver there. He could learn a lot. He's going to win a lot of races going to win as many probably not. But i mean look at ricardo. i mean. he's struggled with that. He went to another team. He's an afterthought now nobody even thinks about him. I mean we're where's he at tenth in the standings right now he's sitting dent ricardo's a phenomenal talent. He just you know. It's i don't know i just i get it. Sucks being the number two guy but sometimes being the number two guys a whole lot better than being the tenth guy like cargo. So i i dunno chris. It's it's weird. I get the struggle. But i don't know formula one. It's an interesting beast. Oh no doubt no. And i think we see this stateside on two wheels to with supercross promote across where you've had a lot of guys who have just been dominant in the guys on those teams those dominant teams. They seem to have a revolving door of number twos behind them. And i don't know how much of it is. Those guys not being graded accepting the number to roll or teams putting the pressure on them that they have to equal the number one guy or what it is but in a lot of motorsports. You see factory programs like that. You know you get that imbalance and it's such a catch twenty two for number two guys who don't know how to be number. Two guys are chris. It's the first chance i get to see new bits and pieces coming onto the cause What the teams Of thinking with regards to set up and how they're trying to approach the weekend early so it's very busy day. We usually end up fishing on friday. But it's all good fun and talking of setup and things that you might have i'd upstate. Is there anything that did catch. I anything that you can chat with our listeners. The sure thing. And i think this goes for every race we have. I think pretty much. Every year because the circuit is we will very split. We've got that massive long straight but this also the old town section as well with the corners is much more tight of course you got ninety degree corners as well and so it's a real balancing act between do we go all out and shave all of the drag of this car. Go for the straight line speed and end up with less downforce. Maybe struggled a bit sector two or d trion go down the middle which i think most teams do or not you throw it all the sexy that you lose a lot of time on the on the straight and it's not something that you would really do but each sector it on. This course is very different from the last. So there's there's a lot to consider a and you'll see lots of different teams trialing lots of different rear wings. Red bull had different rear wings in in practice to see which was best for them to get mys- performance in a straight line but also say when it comes to ten seven eight nine ten eleven nicer those turns having enough downforce to you get the acceleration and the drive off this as well.
