"As fitbod, dot me slash analog for 25% off, thanks to football for the support of this show and relay FM. I am only halfway through the back markers for this week, but holy cow. We gotta talk about that by the time this episode comes out, it's probably already been in a race. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. But we just kind of have to talk about the British Grand Prix. Yeah. Oh, my word. So maybe the best race I've seen? Well, you know, I think you're right. It was actually. But I can't remember which one it was, but it was one of the first races I watched once I really properly started paying attention to F one, was when was it Hamilton had like a half dead tire or something like that and max came screaming around the last corner? Do you know what I'm talking about? Is the first race of the 2020 season? Everyone's tires are exploding. One on three wheels. Because managing it with just talking about this because I was reminded from this episode like episode I love our cool new episodes sometimes I do that by excellent. I was reminded by this past race Silverstone because obviously there was all the drama which probably get to they were covering the cars up, right? And I remembered went during that race. If it was, I think it was the season opener for 2020. I think you might be right. It wasn't just how there were tires blowing up all over the place. And Pirelli, whenever the cars were coming in were covering the tires so people couldn't see them. Oh yes, I do remember that. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So it reminded me of that. Yeah, yeah, I had forgotten about that. But yeah, so that was a really exciting race. When Hamilton's limping across the finish line in max is doing everything to get in front of him. Actually, the race in which max clinched the championship was also really exciting. I know it's a little bit of a sore subject. I'm sorry, but that was exciting. I didn't see that one. Oh, that's right. I forgot because you were. I was like, that's right. I had forgotten that. That was a really good race. But this one, the British Grand Prix was very good and possibly the best race I've seen. It all started all went wrong in turn one when there was a horrific crash. Just a truly terrible crash and like what was it three or four different cars all got taken out all at the same time, but was it yoga on you? I'm butchering its name. I'm so sorry. Thank you. Ended up we later found out, although they didn't show the replay understandably for a long time, ended up getting flipped onto the halo onto the thing that you can think of it as kind of a mini roll cage. It's flipped onto the halo and is skidding at what must have been 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 miles an hour, off of the track through gravel. He's upside down, mind you. Off the track through gravel, then hits did he hit the tire wall or did he like somehow leap up? So it bounces like either right before, into the tire wall, ends up hitting the metal fencing that's there to protect the spectators and slides down in the gap between the tire wall and the fencing, and that's where he was stuck for like ten minutes. It was terrifying to watch. And they didn't show it, thankfully, until we knew that he was at least okay. And it turns out, I guess he was actually pretty much fine. But at the time, we didn't know he was. He's fine. He was back in the paddock by the end of the race. Oh, I missed that. I didn't realize he had already made all his way back. But Alex album. Yeah, yeah, which I saw that he tweeted that he's okay, but that I did not realize because it seemed just watching it that it seemed to me anyway. That his crash was way worse from the looks of it. But as it turns out, it didn't seem to. A heads up for you. This is mainly a thing I know because I am a communicator about Formula One now. There's some fun thing. So why do you prefer is a customer? It's his full name. That's not correct. Oh, good to know. All right, well I appreciate the heads up. They shorten it for the. Race graphic, so it's a Z HO. But if you are talking about him, you wouldn't just say like Louis. Zhou guang yu, the whole thing. Okay. Good to know. Thank you. I don't know enough about this, so but I believe with the way that you would say in Chinese there isn't like one name that's the first name. I got you. So. This one. Oh, I really am. So the driver for AlphaTauri. Alfa Romeo. You'll get there. You will get that, you know? I am a mess. Well anyways, so the crash was bad. Apparently we messed with my head as well. But anyway, so then most of the race I thought it was fine. It was good. I mean, it was not terribly remarkable, but then all of a sudden with like ten, 12 laps left, who was it that there was an oak on had a fuel pump issue, I believe. And he just stops dead in the middle of the track. It's not his fault. So now we get a safety car. And all of a sudden, everyone's bunched up again and basically everyone except leclerc, curiously, gets new tires, and now we have a race. And so it's so funny to me that all of the people, like the old time F one people who are so anti sprint races, they're all like cackling with glee about this ten lap basically sprint at the end of the race. I'm not sure why it's okay here, but not okay when it's before the race, but that's neither here nor there. I know what you're saying. It's like such a complicated, like this is so much complication around that. I know what you mean. Whatever. Anyway, so it ends up that everyone gets bunched up. And as I'm watching this, suddenly Lewis, who had started, I don't know, where did he where was his 5th or 6th? And suddenly he's in fourth, which I mean for Louis is not surprised. At one point. And then. Well, sure. But then in this last batch of laps, he pulled this absolutely perfect move, which I think if you're a racing driver, I'm sure it was not that remarkable, but to me, I was like, oh, I've almost losing the freaking minds. It was. I mean, and it wasn't just because of what Lewis is doing. Like that just like the three of them so it was Perez leclerc and Hamilton. It's just going backwards and forwards on each other for a couple. It was just it's maybe the most exciting thing in a good way I've seen in racing. Because emotionally, I think I felt stronger emotions. George filling in for Lewis and having all that bad luck. Sure. Lando, spin out in the wet. Oh yes, yes. But I think that might have been some of the best racing that I've seen. No, I totally hear you. And those last few laps were so, so good. And it was so funny because the footage is kind of the broadcast is kind of focusing on what was it leclerc and science that were racing right before he cut in. It was clear in somebody that were like right racing wheel to wheel, right next to each other, going around a turn, going wide around a turn, and I'm tunnel visioned on the two of them because I don't think I'm not thinking about anything else that's going on in the broadcast. It's not tunnel visioned on them, but it's mostly focusing on them. And all of a sudden, Lewis comes in shorts and the happy sense shorts the turn and ends up in front of the both of them.

"Make next to no alterations to the track. Can't expand anything. It's beholden to the cars and the fact that it's glitzy and glamorous and everybody wants to be there. But as we saw with Miami, there are other tracks that can attract that same attention that makes Monaco commercially viable for Formula One, and obviously it's the one track on the calendar that doesn't pay a race host fee. And I know for a fact that Formula One isn't too happy about that. So it's a case of am I looking forward to it, yes. Do I want to be convinced that it's brilliant? Yes. Will I be convinced? I don't know. Just very quickly I'm pretty sure Miami doesn't pay a fee and Vegas won't either because that has actually been promoted by F one itself. But that obviously historic historically Monaco is always the one that didn't pay a fee. Historic keynote, but again, because F one have invested investment commercial investments elsewhere to do with both of those Grand Prix, whereas with Monaco, I don't believe it's the same setup, correct? So it Monaco's had a free pass for decades. Thanks to Bernie eccleston, but yeah, it's an interesting one and I'm sure for a lot of listeners, the fact that I am so vehemently against racing in Monaco causes a bit of a bit of an issue, but a bit of a topic of debate. I work quickly into them and say that I think that is going to be shifting moving forward. I think that Formula One probably, yeah. We're no longer in a position now with Formula One needs Monaco dare I say. I don't think everything's going to come up to standards, so yeah, I'd be interested if any changes we see moving forward there. A couple of things. One, this is definitely a debate to be had next Sunday after the Monaco grand team. Which I'll be there doing the race support on the drive rating, so I won't be there to have it with you, sadly, but just two points actually that you may just things that I am looking forward to in Monaco that are actually bad things, well, subjectively bad. One is that it will flares on power and Verstappen is following. It's going to be 78 laps of Verstappen chat with down the radio, which I think will be quite entertaining. But also, and this is a much bigger issue. These cars can't hit the curbs. They can not hit the curbs at all. The discussion in pre season testing was, I think, was it Vettel said it would be easy to learn the track on a bus than in these Formula One car. They are almost undrivable at not on drivable, but they are compared to what they were like. That slow speed awful over curves awful. So I wouldn't be shocked if it's a shunt galore and a lot of criticism comes from that. Well, I mean, if a chunk of law I don't know and it causes a massive mixer in standing and I don't know like Alex album wins a race out of nowhere. I'm sure it will be lauded as one of the races of the season, but that's not why I watch Formula One. You know, it's okay. I mean, we always joked about Baku, right? Like back he's crazy and anyone can win back who because we never know what's going to happen. But if we're honest with ourselves, Baku is not held in the same esteem as Monaco. So it's like, we don't want it to become a farcical race. If we're going to be that precious about Monaco, we don't want it to be a fast. But again, just these cars are just another let's see if I'm proved right or wrong or Alex to your point, whether you're approved right or wrong. The F one is divorcing Monaco more and more is pushing it away and it's meant to be its duel in The Crown, but interestingly, with the vaguest edition especially, could that become with the likes of Miami as well. Is F one looking for a new jewel. If F one's divorcing Monaco are looked to take it to some relationship therapy if that's okay. It is an identity crisis. I am under no illusion that there is. People always ask me in Luke and I have had this debate since we've known each other. Yeah, my mind's changed about ourselves now. I must say. Okay, that's good. But we had the same conversation about whether Silverstone, is it the nostalgia, is it the fact that it's our home Grand Prix that kind of clouds our judgment when we're saying do these races deserve to be on or off the calendar. But at least we get racing at Silverstone, even if it's not always the most exciting Grand Prix of the season. Unless the two type fires come together. But yeah, I think it's not enough. It's not enough anymore for races just go, well, we've always been here. Or, you know, the history argument for me is one of the most frustrating and stupid arguments to host a race.

"From motor sport, a podcast that explores the major moments in the careers of key Formula One figures, and how they met different forks in the road that led them to where they are today. I'm Chris medlin, and today I'm joined by new Mercedes driver George Russell, to discuss the options that were presented to him as a junior, the contract offer that had Mercedes saying he would never drive for them and the crucial races that led to a seat with Williams and ultimately promotion to a world championship winning team. Even if progress looks easy from the outside, it's never quite as simple as it seems. George thanks so much for joining us at the end of what's been a crazy season. And one when you're about to step up to Mercedes, but we're going to look at the path that has taken you there. And the crucial performances, moments, people that have played a key part in that happening. And the first question really is in an earlier one of these podcasts in this series, Alex Albon says he basically was the talent scout that picked you out for the Intrepid driver program. That he was yeah. So is that true? That is a memory that has passed by on me, but I do recall, so Intrepid driver program was a team manufacturer in go kart in that in between 2010 and 2013 they were the team to be with. And they would do these days an assessment of a load of drivers Alex was their driver at retirement I arrived and you do a bit of an assessment and how do you fair against world champion at the time, Alex album? So maybe he made my career. It's all talk about me helping him give a Williams drive, maybe it all started vice versa. Yeah, you've just repaid the favor. Absolutely. Absolutely. But yeah, he did say that you were tough to shake off so you were a year below him, I think. Yeah, I've been I think actually two years below Alex Alex is two years older than me. He was definitely always at least being one year ahead of me. So until it was our formula three days, we never really raced each other because he was always in the junior category when I was in the mini category. He was in the senior category when I was in the junior category. So I think that's why we were quite good friends as well growing up because we never had that rival rivalry because we were never competing in the same category. Did you have rivalries with other drivers though? Was the only one that would stand out when you first started in karting or even in cards that you like I've got to beat that guy to really impress? I'd say my biggest rivalry go kartin was a guy called Ben who sort of came through the ranks with me and he was my rival from my very first championships I was racing. It was called WTP, which I believe stood for watching the pennies. Which is quite funny. And then into coma cadet and then through to KF three, there was always this bit of a rivalry. And we had quite a few incidents along the way. And then we ended up being teammates in formula three and became good friends. So it's, again, it was interesting how these things turn around and he's actually been doing a lot of simulator work for Mercedes. I'm not even sure I'm allowed to say that, but I'm sure it's fine. We'll find out afterwards that he really, really great guy. And a really great driver. I'm sorry, total ringing. So the deal is off. Now, you mentioned KF three there actually won the European Championship in 2012. And then look like 2013 was a bit of a tougher year kind of what happened there because for a lot of drivers it seems to be largely like momentum builds early on and if you get a stumble for some they don't go much further. So what happened to you? That was a tough year. So I had a couple of different options when I moved up from a junior category into the senior one. So I won the European Championship in KF three in 2011 and 2012. And then in 2013, when I moved to a senior category, it wasn't too sure which route to take in terms of which team to join and I had an offer from a factory team to have a factory drive with Bill motor sport. So it was a manufacturer. And just going through a really tough period at the time, they were the team to be within the Czech categories, the gearbox category. But my KF category, they only had three carts on the grid out of 80 or 90 however many were all of these events and just really struggled. So that was a real learning year for me. And that was probably two seasons I looked back on in my career. 2013 and 2015, which I think really molded me as a driver to learn to deal with not winning and to learn to deal with disappointment. Because up until that moment, I'd had a pretty without trying to sound an hour, we're going to have a pretty flawless junior career. One in everything I raced 2013 was the first year that I didn't win anything. And that was quite a shock to the system. But I guess it taught me to be more resilient and taught me to work hard and look at things from a different angle in a.

"Got to think just on this one occasion I just need to leave him that little bit more room. Now Hamilton equally has gone right. I can not afford to back out here. He's going to go. We saw it in the sprint race, Hamilton makes a poor start from pole, and that brilliant Republican is brilliant proposition that's never recognized by the history books. He knows the Red Bull's gone. So we have to go for the move and he's not backing down. He knows his app is not giving up. And if they collide in that instance, I think Lewis knows, ultimately, there's a greater risk of what happening to Verstappen happening. Even though had it not been red flag, I think Mercedes was that afterwards, there was enough damage on Hamilton's left front that he would have had to retire as well. It's great. They even get bot ass to come alongside and look for some see if he can see any damage. He can't do it under safety carry can't see it, because obviously he's quite difficult to pick up those things. But anyway, I love the fact that max is an extremely hard racer. He's an extremely fast racer. He's very interesting. He's very, very interesting, and he's absolutely brilliant. But he just needed to rein it back. That little bit. And we're making so much easier. I think he wins the title, a race early, if that doesn't happen. He wouldn't have known what was going to happen next as we come on to in Hungary. But yeah, just he just needed to just add that little element to his game of this is how you win championships. You just have to just take sometimes that. Okay, I've got it back out here. Even though, as it said, Hamilton was the ultimate aggressor, is that there in that instance, max didn't need to match him with that aggression. Alex, I'll stay with you. I'm just the person who pushed these podcasts together. I'm essentially a fan even I work at auto sport. You guys are journalists, you're independent, you report on what happens. You dig out the stories as well. And it's one of the reasons I on the podcast after Silverstone. I invited on one of our Dutch colleagues because we have part of a big organization. I invited them on to talk about the difference between how the fans are starting to see it because my feeling just as a fan was that something turned here and I don't like how it's feeling. Social media, I mean, anyway, but still, Alex, did you get the same feeling that actually with that incident? Just the two sets of fans, just like started to turn as well. It didn't feel very nice anymore. Massively. I think first of all, it wasn't a nice accident. You never like, you never you never like to see a big crash like that, especially not when the drive has to go to hospital to get checked. I think this happens even talked about he was told by a doctor that he can't look at any TV screens on laptop screen, so a few days because we just don't know how it's going to work. The threat of concussion and things like that. And ultimately, he was fine. Basically, there was not a nice incident. And the problem was was that Red Bull it was just weird because Red Bull ultimately went from being the victim in that scenario to just come in across really badly and really needlessly his leak said that I'll get Alex Albon to recreate things, even though it added nothing. I didn't know information whatsoever. It was just like, what are you doing here? It was like even during the red flag when they didn't know how the race was going to turn out. You've got horns ridiculous comments about you don't put a weird upside at the inside of crops. I'm sorry. What are you on earth are you talking about? Some of the best passes in F one history at hatch have come at that corner. It's totally silly. And then you've got helmet marker saying Hamilton should be banned for an incident where he was only found to be predominantly at fault. It's like, come on, what are you doing here? But that has a knock on effect because of the way that the world is now. These hot takes, it blows up on social media and it makes people it makes it upsets me because I think people totally have react to them, but it makes people very cross and very angry. And it was an emotionally charged incident and there needed to be some cooler heads equally later on Red Bull even more incensed by Lewis Hamilton and the way he celebrated the way Mercedes celebrated and I can kind of see that their point there you know if you've got a driver in hospital you'd be upset at seeing the rival celebrating. But how do we know the Mercedes knew that that's what we've gone on? You can't assume these things, but you're right. It did take a nasty turn. I think contact in those conditions is always going to make that happen. It just needed a bit of a bit of a bit of breathing, but it's a super close challenge at fight. I think you got some genuine reactions there, and it was, as I said, it was all very, very interesting. And look, you guys are both got big social media followings, but you notice on your social media people don't always say the nicest stuff, right? Yeah, and it's funny it's head Ashley because yeah, even last night I was doomed squad and we photos and the best thing. And I found I found actually something like a very in and it's not really solving, but she's in the wake of our recent coverage, a very, very personal comment directed at me. And I really and it really, really hit a sore point. And I really woke up saying I was just like, it upsets you. You don't want to see that abuse on social media, and I think that that obviously, I mean, that's a consequence of everything happened in Abu Dhabi, but it was the first time it happened. And it ultimately, there was then that fallout of races abuse that was put towards Lewis Hamilton that was shocking a bar and just has no place in society and our sport in this world. And it really just was awful to see at points. And we saw the F one community come together condemn the comments that were being made by these people hiding behind avatars on social media. Red Bull Mercedes FI F one, they all released a joint statement condemning it. The thing is you've got to remember when you put out comments into the world and you say things and heat at the moment. What, what is it fueling? What is actually what is the bigger picture? And it was, yeah, it just really was where the tighter race turned nasty and we saw these comments being put out by Red Bull about Hamilton's driving sands and everything like that. And in the end it led to obviously they pushed for the ride over those herd in Hungary and ultimately thrown out because their only bit of evidence was we've got Alex album to recreate the line..

"There's enough in there to say where it wasn't his fault, but equally. He puts the car with the car goes, if that makes sense. So you could chalk that up as another down now. And it certainly costs in points because Norris is so close, Mercedes can't just let Bottas sit behind Hamilton. They have to construct his championship and pays them back later on in the season. They have to take the two four as opposed to the three four. But if Norris wasn't there and being so brilliant, Hamilton would have finished second, even though the damage car. So yeah, it's just interesting the little that the little subplots of those races. So for those keeping score, French GP Verstappen, Hamilton, Perez, styrian GP Verstappen Hamilton Bottas, an Austrian GP Verstappen, Bottas and then Lando that third place. It was the Austrian one, was that the outpouring of love on the radio from Lewis about Lando, was that Austria? Yeah, as a good ten or 15 laps that Hamilton takes to get past Norris after Perez has gone off and got the penalty when he's running second is absolutely cleared off. Yeah, there's Lewis gets goes by Hamilton says great driver, Lando, which I think is interesting asking nice about that afterwards because I think also he was so annoyed about that penalty. I think all his answers were sort of had the sort of cloud of that hanging over them because he was so annoyed he didn't get second place. But yeah, he sort of, I don't know, he's kind of interesting. You put that to the drivers. There's such competitive animals. They're not exactly going to go, oh my goodness, how wonderful it is to hear that from doing Hamilton. No, I should just like go, okay. All right, well look, we definitely can't wrap Silverstone up into any group of races because we need to talk about that. Lots of interesting things about that Saturday spring race, of course, at Silverstone, but it was the cops incident that, after that race when we did a podcast with our own Ben Anderson from GP racing magazine, who has raced through that corner three wide, who says, I think he agrees with Kevin that a perhaps a wiser head on Verstappen would have realized there's going to be nowhere for Lewis to go look is that with all the hindsight now recording yourself of the season, is that a fair criticism of max that he could have given more room or was he always going to race in there and try and close Lewis off, what do you think? Both, I think, yeah, he could have given Lois more room, but as we saw throughout the season, he wasn't going to was going to make that as hard as possible on your max to him. It was his corner as we saw from all the fallout that followed, and for all the comments by Christine Horner and helmet Marko calling Hamilton desperate amateurish. You don't stick a car up the inside at cops and all of that. It was, yeah, it was very, I think this was the first major flashpoint of the season where things got nasty and things spilled over and yeah it was a big big incident and I think that looking back even with hindsight, I think the way that the steward handled it, I think that was correct. I think that Hamilton was predominantly at fault very marginally, but I think he was more to blame than max was for that incident, but was not fully to blame. Again, the steward's report said predominantly, so did put some of the blame on max. Yeah, and I think that everything that followed with the God that Alex album reconstruction on a filming day and everything, it was a pretty crazy story and it sort of dominated F one for a good couple of weeks where we were just sort of seeing everything go back and forth and the aggression from Red Bull as well in its comments about Lois and his move. But yeah, I think it was, I think, I agree, a max definitely, yeah, he could have left more room. I mean, Alex mentioned in Spain earlier where Hamilton thought was going to happen. I was like, oh, I better get out of this. Max, yeah, okay, so much higher speed, but he could have definitely left the bigger space for Hamilton, but that wasn't going to happen. We know through this season how max has been in those wheels 12 fights like he's very aggressive and he makes very clear look I'm not moving aside. And that resulted in a huge huge accident. Alex watershed moment? Absolutely because of how much it changes the points gap as Luke said 32 points after Austria, a massive Verstappen is walking to the title. But what happens at Silverstone is the reason why he doesn't end up as the number one driver in our top 50 rankings in my F one top ten and why I still believe that it was ultimately the difference in why he wasn't for me, the best driver of the season. And it's because of what Lewis Hamilton has shown, time and time again in his career and he showed it in this season. If you want to win a world title, there are moments where you have to go, I have to back out of this. I have to take 18 points and not 25. And bearing in mind Verstappen only what three or four races earlier has lost 25 points in Baku. Yes, he was gifted, Lewis Hamilton, not winning 25 points in Baku by the magic button incident, but he's got to think just on this one occasion I just need to leave him that little bit more room. Now Hamilton equally has gone right. I can not afford to back out here..

"So they've got the expertise. They've got the know how to make it count. And if Red Bull drops the ball a little bit then there'll be that profit. Obviously, on paper, yeah, it should suit Red Bull, but Mercedes has done it all before. So we'll have to wait and see. It's exciting though, isn't it? It's very exciting. I mean, we are literally getting down to the wire with this. And max is still so cool and calm and collected about it or even though, you know, everyone else is sort of saying, you know, it's really the momentum is really getting behind you and it's just so level headed about it, which does make it even more exciting. I am intrigued to see how the next few races unfold, as you said, Mercedes have done this, it's not the first time. But it's getting close. It's getting very, very close, and it's exciting for us. Let's move further down the field though. To Pierre gasly, who finished an excellent fourth, sort of a lonely race for him. I feel like we have this conversation about Pierre a lot. So we're not going to dwell on it too much, but once again, just solid and consistent and really there's nothing negative really to say about him, is he? He's just doing what he needs to do, but, you know, as we know the future wise, which I know is a controversial topic, some people are like, you know, keep them in Alfa tauri. That's why he's doing well. But a lot of people are saying his performance and his consistency warrants a better seat. What did you make of his weekend Jess will come to you fast? Yeah, I mean, it's kind of bad that we're just kind of getting used to Pierre gasly putting in these amazing performances, but not really having too much to show for it other than obviously a great point hall for alpha Tori, his teammate DNF aside. But on his side of the garage, it's looking it's looking great. I mean, the pace that he had today was incredible. You know, the Ferraris were saying they just couldn't get anywhere close to him. They even had Ferrari having team orders to see if science could eke out more pace out of him, but he just couldn't get anywhere near, I think, just under 7 seconds was as close as they could get in those final stages to him. So yeah, lonely, but very solid drive. And again, I guess it's the age old problem with Formula One, there are only sets, only so many seats. And so many, I guess premier tier seats available. He's tried it once in Red Bull. He didn't get on with it. So whether or not it would be a good place for him to go back to, probably not. You would argue. So for me, I think I heard Jenson Button saying this on the commentary as well. For me, the only thing that he can do is stay where he is and hope that with the new regulations, Alfa tauri gets even more competitive and he can kind of think about winning races with them, but he needs to get himself to a manufacturer, I think. But again, not too many positions available to him there, either. So is the age old problem that there's not enough seats in Formula One? There are enough teams in Formula One. They're under manufacturers in Formula One. So unless something is Formula One, a lot of crazy things happen. We've seen surprise and shock moves from people, I guess, you know, Daniel Ricciardo moving to Renault was a massive shock, no one really expected that. Could we see Pierre gasly Alpine? I'm not sure if that's a great move for him, but yeah, just it almost kind of there's nothing else for us to say, really. We know how great a driver he is. But he's not got much else to think about or go to. So just kind of one of those slightly sad, but also great that we're seeing him put in these performances and show what great driver he is, but yeah, there's not really many places for him to go to be really up there and in those challenging positions. And whilst we are on our tarry, let's quickly touch on Yuki because pretty rough day for him, of course, out in the first corner. And yesterday he had that little dressing down from Red Bull, shall we say? What were your thoughts on that JBL? You mentioned it briefly at the start of the podcast. What were your thoughts on yesterday and how Red Bull handled it? And who was in the wrong as such? I think generally yesterday, sonoda looked really, really good. He looked really good in practice and he looked like he was on top of everything this weekend. And it sort of, the form we've seen in the last few rounds, obviously is being sort of not quite driver coach by Alex album, but Alex Albon is providing support for him in that side of the garage. And he looks much better for it. It looks like he's sort of come out the other side of the difficulty she had earlier in the year and he just needs to sort of have an opportunity to build on that. And today could have been that, you know, he didn't have engine penalties and that kind of thing. And I think in qualifying yesterday in Q three, alpha towery has contended the cenote was aware of the situation. He had the Perez and for staff and behind him. And because he was got through to Q three because they felt that gasoline might need a toe. He was sort of done his bit and was just sort of trying to get off the track and I think Perez saw him ahead. Maybe sort of got a little bit distracted and had a little bit of a brain fade if you like and sort of followed him into that runoff area. And I don't think so notice to blame for that. I really don't. Whatever your sort of opinion on whether it should have been in Q three or not. I'll tell you how to express purpose for him being there. They got him through. He'd got through on merit. He was very, very quick. And he'd done his bit to help gasly out. And he couldn't really disappear off the track. So yeah, I think Red Bull has been very, very unfair on him. We know that Yuki is he's still in his first year he's made mistakes. He's learning, that's kind of what you do as a rookie. You should get a free pass and you first year to, you know, start the season off making a few mistakes. So you know where the limits are. But I think that sort of unfairly got him a reputation and it was very easy for rebel to kind of pin the tail on that particular donkey. And yeah, it was just unfortunate positioning at the time, I think. And then that first corner, it was just a mess. Because what it was him archon and Schumacher kind of three wide in that corner. Him and Schumacher kind of pins it on, or can't go out of it absolutely fine and I don't entirely know how. But Snyder and Schumacher were left by the wayside and that was it for them. And as I said, senator needs a weekend where he can take that form and build on it and get another really good result and he just didn't have that opportunity today because circumstances conspire against him. Jess, what did you make of the Red Bull cenote situation yesterday? We saw the Mercedes admin getting involved and, you know, sending him a motivational message on Twitter. But do you agree with JBL that he was not a fault there and, you know, Red Bull maybe shouldn't have been quite so firm in there was after. Yeah, absolutely..

Well from the names on the side to names in the cockpit. Let's get to the near stood. Got some driver news. All the dominoes have have fallen one. One danny who is in the picture for the last seat at alpha over mayo. Yeah it looks like one you. Joe is the favorite for a second seat. Everyone who's watching after this year or last year especially last year. We'll noted he was. He's he's one of the folks in the in the running for the sort of you know we're kind of used to a little bit now. Some of these youngsters coming through app popping up more directly from africa. Or maybe we're just more aware of them because it was kind of getting a bit more visibility than it used to be a couple of things about you joe. He's a he's young ish chap twenty two years old. He's part of the alpine academy as well is currently second to standings has won a racer to and frederick sarah talking in the article on autosport about how he might deliver better in the next coming races as they come back to more traditional at short tracks at the other thing about guangzhou courses that he's chinese and that provides a pretty good am resource for. You know it's kind of like the having a brazilian driver thing you know what i mean like. It's a big amount of populace for sponsorship opportunities and stuff and he's also allied to some healthy backing from chinese sponsors according to this article as well as sources have suggested that a deal is all but agreed avenue needs to be signed. Off so we may see guangzhou joe in f one next year and we may be hearing about it. Sooner rather than later. As you said drew it is defiled dominoes to be toppled down at this stage. A lot of them fell. Actually it was kind of a bit of a crazy silly season this year. Yeah i guess we should also state that antonio juvenile is currently sitting in that seat but it has not been confirmed whether he is keeping it and all the rumors are saying that That he is not so. Yeah formula to you. Know still continuing to be a a farm team for forming the one. It seems and a couple more. Just news are items here about driver moves. That have already happened. As we mentioned in. Last week's episode album will be pairing nicholas not at williams for next year as george russell moves to mercedes. Which was it was. We weren't really sure how that was going to work. Because alex album was a red bull driver and williams is pretty closely aligned with mercedes there being a mercedes engine in the back and total wolf. owns part of the company. Or something we did. I don't know so. How is it going to work. Well i if this article on formula one dot com is to be believed which. I have no reason to believe that it shouldn't album has been released from red bowl. But according to red bull team principal christian horner they retain an option on him in twenty twenty. Three horner says he was effectively out of contract at the end of next year. Anyway so basically what. We've done a speed that process up and secure future options on him. He retains a link to red bull and we would have an option on his services. Should they be required in twenty twenty three. So is what it sounds like how marco has got to eat something and of alexander. Album is what he'll be feeding on for the next while it's interesting i. When he signed up. I remember reading the quote trying to like piece of bars. Are you still red bull driver. And i couldn't really tell kind of sounded like maybe not. Maybe so i guess this makes sense probably for all parties concerned as well. you know. everyone's kind of happy. There's a backstop there if they need them in the future. Yeah and a couple more confirmations coming in since the since our last episode rob. What's gone on martin. Yeah no huge surprises there They're basically sticking with their lineup of sebastian battle and lent straw You know that'll i think we we've seen this performance has had its ups and downs But he seems to have been solid in that car. And you know if not for a really fluky issue with the With the fuel in that car he would have had a podium in there Savvas said that you know one of the things that he's motivated about at this point in his career is just seeing a quote. The new generation one cars there look very different and the new regulations should give us cars that can race much more closely than recently. More exciting racing will be great for the drivers as well as for the fans. So it seems like sabah's gonna give the new generation of a hard luck that maybe restores his fortunes of it and maybe restores some of the passion that certainly I felt some has been a little bit a wall in his in his game of late. So but obviously there's a lot of reasons to want to keep him in the fast-developing aston martin program which brings us to another interesting Announcement that they had this week They brought in Martin whitmarsh to head up there to help their operations.

"Mutual thing symmetry. We've got a new entry into watching. Don't technically have an entry into cancellation. Watch this weekend. We do in the sense that the calendar has been reduced from twenty three rounds to twenty two japan or do you go cancelled. We know that but just not going to replace it. Which is probably the wise thing to tell well that the belder grown was the tribute to the japanese appraisals suzuka It was more like on sunday Jay ways imagine if we went to suka and despite all the an alternate universe covert still exists but we still with japan for the parade and it was washed out on sunday. Could you imagine. Imagine the twitter ati going nuts for for that one imagine. Don't do it on monday. It's a public holiday in tokyo on monday. Yes oh it'd be inside. They do it all the time. She is important tonight absolutely important to note but apparently going to be reduced down to twenty two old turkey's still in the county now despite being on the uk red zone and has no rice after it there is a chance took could become majella which is no bad thing with respect to turkey of course but jello very good. We've also got the say in when australia would have been more or less in november. It's probably going to be cat. How and if not. It'll probably be another ice in bahrain but it seems like seems to be just a quick. The drive market was as well yes. We've said that mercedes has made the decision that i just haven't told anyone about it. I've told the drivers presumably. It seems like they waiting for veltri boathouse to finalize deal with alfa mayor. Because you wouldn't have thought that. Joe russell need that long deal with williams if he was just staying. Sorry that seems like that's going to be nance pretty soon. I wouldn't be surprised. If alpha are made the announcement ahead of the italian grown pray in a couple of weeks nicholas latavius williams as well. Because you're stupid. Said well. He probably will so that as i said your parents. We didn't mention he actually. He's been reassigned for another year. Red bull. He says that they agreed that before the break but they didn't bother decided contract until just recently which means that presumably alpha tower is gonna keep the same drivers which means alex albums going to need something to do next. It's very bright. That's a hell of a trust exercise. Jay perez to one this industies him and got right by my by my secure at bull. I'm not going to sell anything i trust. Dr not have a world famous change of heart. One example aches going to absolutely kick back and turn off everything and trust. Pash michael and rome as much as i would like to tell you my listeners ship even south carolina came from meeting the man eating questionable chicken palmer's. I'd be lying if i did size. Turns out that people listening from carolina a not because they went on a fact-finding mission for his radio station for tax reasons. It's because they fan. Well he case. Casey found through reddit. Searching for f one podcasts. A couple of years ago when we were still doing it as radio show which is a long time ago really. We've also got speaking of fact finding missions. We've got a mission. Set down by some members of the discord channel for americans to visit an olive garden to order an american palmer and find out what it is american pomme. Could it possibly be worse than the famous. The famous mcginley papa. The i'm going to call the so. We need to nine for the pablo now. I don't want to name the restaurant. I'll be sued. Call it the. Let's call the the southbank kosta the that power is lost to cluster of miscellany of wise mate misl- as bread crumbs and miscellaneous cheese and differently. Microwaves thankfully in that bizarre quirk of luck dad sits become vegetarian. Saw so i miss out on the armless. Put it on the on the whole passive the food that i ate the the the southbound class. It was pretty bad. So i don't know if if all got and could produce something you know the the the straddling parmesan parmigiano. The pommie in other lists sites is is one of the great inventions of. It's very unique to australia. Inferred culture as you head height to saturday night to To pop culture. It's it's never it's never been replicated elsewhere around the world it's like it's like if you got to new york in every good cafe is because someone from elven the parmigiana is exactly the side it is people are discussing. What larry's may compared to other restaurants. Which i think is very on topic for this program. There was some discussion about marshalling which we talked about already. How marshals of course volunteers. Everyone agrees monstrous. Should be paid in the discord channel. That is the general consensus. This was happening at around to him. I think more or less when someone was cooking a steak because they were bored watching the stream. Which is i mean. I feel like we've got a friend who is normally cooking around the time. "So the appeals been withdrawn which means it session. Middle was disqualified. Which is a shame for him because it was very good drive but isn't it amazing. The passage of time you now accept that as the ruling so you've come to terms with and probably little bit estimate would have been the why it's just like you know it's too high or the f- evaporated by now we let the seal and so whatever you know one lady that we thought we had probably doesn't exist at the moment off. It's leaving wine in a hated room. Kerr for for a couple of years. It's not going to be. They're going to get a good sample. It'll be it'll be very bad. Sample theranos macheted. I've been watching that documentary. The hateley look podcast nevada. What's the discord blow up there. Nas chattanooga learn about affirmative use code chad very junkie injury. Oh okay on that one. So basically it's the equivalent. Acid mass thought. They could get the same amounts of fuel as people could get that much blood out of human as much as s and could get that much fuel out of a kite. The parallels striking. I am intrigued. I'm sick and trade. I look forward to the discussion. God knows i need something to between nine. Am and five am for the next couple of weeks. So one on the list and let's go to the drive a market to Wrap up this part because matiba auto is confirmed. Chewbacca staying at haas. He's still part of the ferrari driver. Young driver fryer driver academy whatever it's called. She's way it's one of those things. We're gonna sit matiba not to go into stein but there is no contract yet but that will happen. He hopes antonio giovanetti will be renewed at l. For mayo which is probably a good sign that he might be friends. Toss this elf. Atari has no alternative but it's current drivers which don't know if that's pessimistic or optimistic. It's hard to know with sometimes. It's a very confidence fee. Driver's saying what we'd like to change them but we can't s alex elbow is considering indie cost. Which if he can't get a drive unifil on next year and considering well assuming red bull racing renew sergio perez which is not a given but it seems likely and assuming that he doesn't find his way into williams which baraboo kinda came. It seems clear that want to keep them at least as a reserve and then he may be well going over to indycar which seems to be a little bit in vogue. At the moment i was i was about to mention on this. It's always been the alternates. Here it's way all the other f one drivers come to spend another detainees in another career. But it's and it's always been that it's always playing bait drivers right. I but felt like before. It was a reluctant plan bay. But now that you're saying drivers like you marcus ericsson's of the world romain grosjean especially in recent times they probably all those f. One drivers stuck in that european bubble and cut and thrust world reform the one. Dekalb very professional series very well run and very loud following. But it's just a little bit off broadway enough to be enjoyable if if if that makes sense and all saying that in a bad round in a in a complimentary way because remember always having he's always indulging in ice cream in american delicacies. Phone hacking you argue with that and he's and he's going very well. I mean he. He spent sorry long in formula one piecing around going absolutely bonkers to finish fifth in a rice when he's a genuine rice winning contender in a lot of one's always bizarre that he's also in the running races like the rookie of the year. He'd indycar bizarre format but obviously a lot more and more these f. one paper going over there and saying this is actually pretty good. I would rather be in contention to win races in indycar and they have a pretty good time at it. Then sort of be miserable in the midfield racing for williams for example. It's probably not where definitely grown zap. And now on you know he could be in that sort of tipping points in his career flecked. Bala with this. It's just too hot. Or do i just find myself going to indycar. So it's becoming more attractive in the corruption and good luck to them. What is interesting. isn't it because it's also this tipping point you mentioned the. Which is i think that the more if one drivers who end up the the more attractive it looks and the less of a. Let's say defacto fullback while it will always be if you grow up in the european system. You're always going to have a crocodile. One that's the point of it. But it will become less of clinging onto your wandering at all costs and kevin magnusson suggested that he probably stuck around for too long because there was not much of a prospect he monte arrived at hostile going anywhere else just because of the way. The driver market works in formula line. Even though he clearly deserved shot in a car but in indycar it can go or you know. He went to america and he could contend rice garage. Clearly as you said he's doing that suddenly we'll find a situation where like let's take. Alex album is the example. If he were dropped as he was last year he would just go to indicate. We consider just going then. We also say. I do wonder this if the rule changes and if on over the next certainly next year nick subsequent couple don't do enough to cape the grid competitive is a whole. Why wouldn't you say more drivers change to a series where there are a lot of other f one drivers or or fun grade drivers and also the indycar. Greg drive as a perfectly good as well. We shouldn't talk down where they can go. And because of the way the series works. You've got a better chance of winning because all the guys who make it to at one almost invariably junior champions like they used to winning stuff heaps. I mean imagined george. Russell dominated every junior series. Only just scored points from williams. How hot must be mentally. It is but that's also the lure of foreign the one it's meant to be that hard any The don't want to be disparaging and saying that. The benchmark is a little bit lower. Because obviously this success. These drivers are finding but it. But it's a lot to obviously with. The cars are fundamentally the same. The two engine. You can pick from and some eric figurines but fundamentally the khazar pretty much argentina who saw it. It's a it's a jazzed up formato basically and in terms of speed as well very very different obviously ride call to haul different ballgame altogether. I'll i'll preface this. I don't actively follow indycar. A hell of a lot of it. If at all i saw just keep tabs on a into in terms of what. I say sort of in the in the in the crooked news media and on the crooked social maybe a you say guys like scott dixon. Who's been around at les. Since i was a schoolboy hellier castro neves one dancing with the stars or threatened with jail time and subsequently won the indy. Five hundred more than once during those periods elizabeth. So judy that you can having a career. Kevin magnussen saying is probably the ship Couple easy this young man. We're talking in that. Kevin magnussen could easily spend ten indycar if he really wanted to to be honest this is a little bit rice and linked debut only meals to the Twenty or so but that's the difference. I think there's an often when i say a driver on their way foam the one. I mentioned this about grown in madison. Last you have it must be a little part of the must be a little pilot inside just is a little bit of dislike. Well i'll a little bit of coming to terms with. I guess your age you've spent so long trying to chase drain you try be there And don't get too worked up on that because lewis sebastian. Good the hogged most of the accolades in the last decade also. But yeah and you often just like what must be thinking when well what do i do after if one. It's these rude shock of it. Almost like becoming a after a professional football has to go back to a civilian lifestyle it just. They often struggle with it where it laced with rising drivers. Thank you peekapoos categories that you want to go to maybe formerly as in the right categories to go to the violence. Yes lots of other categories around the world that you can you take into. Let's talk about former as well because this is the last interesting talking. Point drive a market chat because over the weekend. Nick devries won the championship and world championship. I should say. I will championship awarded and mercedes for. He's rural championship. They also do the same. But then withdrawing their leaving not immediately next year after the next season one more season left but of course we to raise is being talked.

"Been guilty of of making before. And i think a lot of people when they first start out or when he jumped in new categories of guilty of making it. And that's when when it comes down to qualifying and he put the new tires on and actually push harder because the car is lighter. It's probably handling. The best is felt an one. You have more engine power because you turn the engine up for quality but it's very easy to over push because you know it's a qualified gotta push hard but sometimes pushing harder necessarily the way to find the laptop and george seems to be very good at finding that right balance of consistently improving a lot by lop. We've seen it many many times that in q. one the margins are so close and he'll consistently in q. two but sometimes he's not making that threshold by a lot. It's still very close with all twenty cars on track but then come. Youtube is able to keep finding keep proving keep improving and obviously you know two races. Those improvements at the q. Three which is quite remarkable. So i think building the qualify accession which starts arguing from the end of f. b. three and two qualifying as something. He's he's very very strong. Then i think with me in particular. Because i wouldn't really say it's like a specific trend of driving like he's always for example he's always breaking later or he's always carry more minimum speedo. He's always getting better exes. I think it's just the consistency of how he builds each lap. Sometimes we could do a great. I lap and i could be very close or sometimes faster on a first lap but then i though improve as much as i need to on the next lap also improve but just not finding as as much time so i. I think that's the fine movements finding margins. I'm getting frustrated listening to you. Yeah that's fascinating isn't it. Yeah is he the best teammate you've ever had. And you've had some really good ones esteban. Oklahoma in the junior formulas alex album. Yeah i would. I would definitely say say so. I mean i think it's a bit tricky because yes i've had some really shonky teammates a lot of which are have been a formula one or currently are informed. One so i've got to experience driving against people with different driving styles different strengths different weaknesses. I think naturally though i kind of you know more in my the lottery years on my junior career i think is the kind of fair benchmarks. Say okay how. Strong was certain teams because naturally. I feel a better driver than i was. When i was informed the three in two thousand fourteen teammate. So that's the bond for for me. I still he's amazing driver. Very sean driver remember. We drove in completely different ways. Different driving styles. Which is why i struggled so much against them. But let's say. I feel if i was to go back into into form the three now i see better driver just as i'm sure he is all these years down the line but speaking now form the one driving against a guy like george win yes areas. I know i need to improve on as i'm sure there's areas he feels he needs to improve on. I'm assuming maybe doesn't yeah. I i would definitely say he's he's probably one of the strongest if not the strongest especially overqualified. You know. i've driven against drivers who have said this at the time. This is the best guy in this area. I've driven with. This is the best guy in this area of driven with sometimes qualifying sometimes the race..

"Publicly jess for now being her reverse tweets because that was pretty shaved of my part but it was a it was a good. It was a good one. But that's exactly what they did. They look what happened in spain. And just when we're going to do exactly the opposite and we're gonna play play your game and christine horns off to the race. The day they had in their mind they didn't want a repeatable. Celona and i think that is a really good example of red bull doing a mercedes arabia which is learn from your defeats comeback stronger and ultimately it was that boldness and aggressiveness. That one them. Today's rights. I'm glad the message i sent to you about nico. Rosberg was unprintable in a japan medium. Nick bats as well league doesn't now but it was. It was just funny. 'cause i sent it to him on teams and then i saw her on twitter and i was like hey hang on yes debt. Yeah out you. I i did see. The screen psychologist wasn't salty. Zoll i was. We're oakland colleagues or friends. We'll be can share names. It's fine dig into the titanic bit later in the episode. I want to sell mercedes for elizabeth. Because there's been a lot of questions asked about that strategy decisions today. And i want to dig into them as we've mentioned of course they had to bring in voucher sooner than they would have liked because of the fact that he was experiencing the vibrations. I'm not been triggered the pistols of the three. But why did they leave. Lewis out fool that extra lap rather than bringing humane suna and had. They brought him in suna would they have avoided being victim to that undercut. You think they did think the undercut was enough. So i think that they they i think tulsa after the race they need probably another and then they would have okay which of the margins by what she saw the max'ed i think tallies up with that. Yeah and i think that's something that when i did. The articles have explained the batas. Stop a lot of fans can back and said well. Why didn't they just bring lois in one later. I think maybe they thought okay if we have the undercard if we've got enough time and if we can get another lap or two then then say beer ab maxwell as well so we keep playing. This game moved them catamounts with them but it didn't work out. I'm sure it's something. I imagine in the coming days when mercedes do they use. Your excellent must say debrief probably james vows. I match won't be doing it this week. That may get answered. Then but yeah. That's something that obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing. But i think mercedes may look that and go if they if they had come in on lap. Eighteen exact same. Thomas max they probably would have been okay and it could have been a very different rights if max has done the job and taking louis. The conversation right now would be haven't red bull made a colossal mistake in yielding cap position. It's one of those decisions where you can't get it right. Everyone goes year genius. But if an worked out we'd have been lambasting stupidity and a massive appetite for risk. That didn't need to be taken. The the win win was taken in the in the closing laps. It wasn't like it was it. Was it all fell apart. There was a point where we thought in the closing stages lewis might hold on. That was intel mac. Scott round pretty quickly loses teammate. But it didn't all fall apart altogether when lewis finding pace again out of nowhere it was. Oh is he gonna pull an absolute worldy hair and hold onto this word which would have been true. Lewis hamilton style. Considering how much. Everybody else was struggling. But i was gonna say it to do with that pitstop where where max took. We're maxed took the lead it was. We've been a bit critical of race direction recently. And i don't know if this was a mistake all north but the shot down the stray as louis was coming out of the pits and it was just held and there was nothing that i no 'cause it was just shut down the straits and then you saw louis appear in the pit lane and then you saw max a pair coming down the street. I genuinely thought that was a brilliant of tv direction whether it was mental like than on purpose or no. I genuinely my heart was going. I was always stood up going. Oh my gosh. because you couldn't tell how close they were and i was. I wasn't looking at track delta's either so i couldn't see like how much max closing in so for a viewer. It was highly dramatic. I did enjoy that quo. It was dramatic. Always exactly the same. You couldn't quite make out until they came to approaching the corner and she's like oh my god. How is this gonna unravel. But the other thing i wanted to touch them was of course we had is very angry. Ray j united in more abusive To solve they didn't listen to him and it was so hard lewis at the end. Saying you know. I told you earlier about pace indicating that perhaps he was suicide gesture. They should've taken a different approach. Ambu how him on the radio in the racing. Make sure we understood them next time. Why did mercedes not do that. Undercut not risk the to stop and allow redbird pool dot card because of socio paris and i think that is a huge testament not only to the that paris doing but also rebel station to bring him into. The team is to have the second driver to stop giving mercedes basically a two on one advantage where they can split stress. Jason basically always ensured. They've got red bull covered off. Somehow we saw peres. Seattle quite a quite a sluggish starts the race thing. It's fed say. Drop back quite quite a way from the leading trio but he was just saving his ties so he could go a good seven. Six or seven is longer than the than the leading three drivers. And i'll see we saw was when he did awesome and captured catch imposters. How beneficial those extra apps were but throughout. He was always within that window and he was always making it. Some say these couldn't take a free software and they couldn't just quickly go on. Okay bring him in and they basically had to sort of just stick with the one to begin with and it was something that some of the types of all set off to the race said that paris was always danger and hey i system is red. Bull is a bigger threat now basically because they've got the second drive there and he said yeah because we just so the split strategies there. Isn't that option there. The with all due respect sir alex album. He's at a very good week. And in dc. I think is worth mentioning and cpi gasoline. Before him rebel. They will always kind of. They never had this kind of support when they needed. Whereas today perez not only gave the support but then actually got the podium as well which is fantastic. So the mercedes. They couldn't really look at the to stop with much comfort. Because there was always this. Ray gunner four of the stop and hasn't been in recent times and i think it's worked out really well for at bolted..

"Debate because their resources because they stray we've talked about their driver lineup or we haven't talked about. Is there restructuring within the team and okay. We don't ni- because we not literally in the team you the impression that kind of old school now. It wasn't my phone was hateful content backstabbing type environment. Doesn't seem to be there anymore. Not doesn't come across like that. You feel like they're you. They're the way they've targeted. The tire issue that we talked about the way they talked to the problems they definitely had knew the had from last year. They seem to be a more cohesive unit and an a modern f one team. Now which. I haven't really looked like before. Have young drivers modern outlook. And you've got everything in place to to deliver really. it's just know can they. Can they fall on the overturn. The team that's been been better than them. Basically since it came back to f one in maceda's mercedes always been better than ferrari. When it's been in one really nasty for i could get back to being on on a par if you could be where they were in two thousand eighteen. I think clerk is good enough to tighten the fought to the end of the championship on this rules. As well is way no other team is gonna know explicitly what each other is doing. And so gonna come see preseason testing where the covers eventually wrapped off. We see who's good. He's not good whether anybody sandbagging who's all it is going to be stuck much fun. The start next season. Obviously i think we're going to hit a point where there will be a team dominating because there's ways to maintain this done these new regulations best than the rest but this will be off change the other teams to look aker How come we implemented Knows ours and like two thousand nine. It can change. Ad is going to be very busy for you. Have to see what is the. What is this this year's version of the double diffuser all the f. ducks or the you know the blown diffuser. Where where's the trick. That somebody has has found the loophole. Everyone else in the pit lane. Guys all know all the guys. We're all we need to do on all that's illegal. We can argue about until someone says that it isn't while developing our own version so it can be quite exciting for that point of you have to worry about. You won't have to be talking about just little cutouts on the rear of a floor anymore. Thank god we wrap things up with. I just very quickly for anybody writing to complain. Yes there was your kimmy reichen and being fries lost drivers words watch thousand seven two thousand and four but of course he was constructor's champion in two thousand as well. we never. "People yelled at me on twitter for saying it but anyhow beneficiary of all that was sebastian bethel who ends up on the podium for aston martin after all of the chaos and all of the carnage and max verstappen having the blow up that he did and lewis hamilton having the brake issues on the restart that he did so great weekend for those guys especially in the context of the other tire failure being lance stroll. Who was a teammates. Aston martin so Big day for them Certainly sebastian was elated to get back on the podium. And then we have to feel like there aren't too many of those left in his career so certainly worth celebrating to see that. So sebastian Vattel at number five for me you know and this is actually going to spur bigger formula one conversation and we ended up taking the whole segment for it. But i'm gonna go to baku city for my number five as well I got no complaints with your number five. I actually from my number five once again as in last week. I'm going with red bull formula one the team You know obviously you know perez with that victory as a big moment for his career He needed that. I think You know he's kind of been in the shadow of for for a while now. And but i had to go the red bluff one because i had had that what race one if you laps to go. He's leading fluke tire failure and now all of a sudden he finishes what i think officially eighteenth something like that You know tough break for them. I mean but red bull formula one is proved especially in the last couple of rounds like they are bringing the fight. You know what i mean. They they've got a team that can compete for this championship and for stopping thankfully for him. Hamilton had problems. They still retains the lead in the drivers championship. So we're that shootout that we're expecting is still going to be there but you know i'm just looking down this. You know this entire race you know. And and you mentioned battle I'm looking at constructor point driver standings and you know another guy that pops out of my mind as lando norrish eastern their fourth. You know and. I don't know that anybody thought norris would be sitting fourth in the driver's championship. You know this this deep into the season so the the thing is formula one this year chris and obviously i had red bull. F one at five. But i'm excited for the first time in a long time. You don't know what's going to happen on any given weekend. That podium isn't set you know. We've got four teams. That are really you know kind of front. Running teams five ish. Maybe like i dunno. It's got me excited to tune in every week because the processional is gone. I mean f- one. These guys are driving and they're driving the wheels off these cars and we have a true battle. You know upfront and the one. We haven't had a long time absolutely. I mean it's and it's funny that you mentioned that and certainly Red bull racing as a team at number five is a worthy pick. And i think a lot of what this season is actually gonna come down to is the battle between the second drivers at red bull and mercedes because this seems to be the most evenly matched that maximum staff and lewis hamilton. Have ever been no doubt. The cars seem to have their various strengths and weaknesses but as a whole they tend to be on par with one another. So now it's a matter of which second driver is actually going to be able to take advantage of the situation that they're in and rise to the occasion for years. That's been voluntary botas. He's been able to pick off a couple of wins year. we've seen some seasons. Where early on. He seemed like oh he might actually be a threat for the championship. He might pull nico rosberg this year but hasn't and then gets tobacco and lays one of the biggest eggs i think of his career certainly with mercedes just did not have it for whatever reason it certainly lewis didn't in practice either but lewis at the very least was in contention for a podium to the very end sergio perez on the other hand. We thought it was going to be the eleven billionth red bull second driver to fill out of that spot because that seems to be what happens on that team they go through them. They always have but you know now. There's a second red bull driver who is able to consistently put it on the or who seems like they could consistently put it on top of the podium for the first time since you know the vessel ricardo days. They haven't really you know i. It's always seemed like it's only one guy who can really win races with that team at any given time and if peres can do that i mean yes he's going to be looked at is the number to you know he's always going to be looked at is the number two there because max is the guy but if peres can consistently win a couple of races a year i mean i think that's what's expected of him at this point in his career. You know i. I mean him. Winning with racing point last year in the first place was a lifeline of his career. I mean everybody thought he was on his way out. People thought he was going to indycar. People thought you know in many ends up alex albums seat and has already proven in the end to be an upgrade their but rebels always had that issue. You know for quite some time now getting a second driver who works as a second driver. And if sergio perez can do that then you know then we finally have a return to form for that team for the first time. Really i mean i. I said to winners. Where the vessel ricardo days but in terms of four. Maybe that'll mark webber days even so even further back than that man. We're going deep without one. But you know it's funny. I'm gonna bring the basketball analogy. And i think formula one drivers have always struggled with us and probably the one that accepted his role the most. And he's still one of the greats but it was rubens. Barrichello in and i i look at it like the jordan pippen thing pippen was still a hall of famer being in the shadow of michael jordan. You know he still put together a hall of fame career. And i think formula one these guys get overshadowed by greatness and obviously you know that you can't say is one of the all time greats. But he's got the makings of one of the all time greats. Now you know. I have no idea what the next five to ten years. They're gonna hold for him so we're definitely getting ahead of ourselves but i'm just saying like i can see the next five to ten years especially after lewis bows out You know this being the max for step and series you know and so. It's tough to be in that second seat. It's tough to be in that role. But her eskin. He could be a phenomenal driver there. He could learn a lot. He's going to win a lot of races going to win as many probably not. But i mean look at ricardo. i mean. he's struggled with that. He went to another team. He's an afterthought now nobody even thinks about him. I mean we're where's he at tenth in the standings right now he's sitting dent ricardo's a phenomenal talent. He just you know. It's i don't know i just i get it. Sucks being the number two guy but sometimes being the number two guys a whole lot better than being the tenth guy like cargo. So i i dunno chris. It's it's weird. I get the struggle. But i don't know formula one. It's an interesting beast. Oh no doubt no. And i think we see this stateside on two wheels to with supercross promote across where you've had a lot of guys who have just been dominant in the guys on those teams those dominant teams. They seem to have a revolving door of number twos behind them. And i don't know how much of it is. Those guys not being graded accepting the number to roll or teams putting the pressure on them that they have to equal the number one guy or what it is but in a lot of motorsports. You see factory programs like that. You know you get that imbalance and it's such a catch twenty two for number two guys who don't know how to be number. Two guys are chris. Well we're going to take a short commercial break. We'll be back after this on the general tire down. Thirty radio show powered by.

The one minute forty three point. One four eight of the soft followed by the ferraris of show class and call signs. Daniel ricardo had a good session finishing p five while source spin from his teammate london. Norris but fortunately there was no damage later in the day. Sergio perez the times with one for two point one in f. to attend ahead of his teammate. With staffan by bicol assigns. A red flag was brought out when nicholas the. Tv's call came to a stop to to the engine overheating. i'm not signal at the end of his session. Despite setting solid times throughout the day charlotte took a trip into the barriers at ten fifteen which resulted in him. Losing the front wing and bringing out the safety car an usa interrupting the software runs a face behind him. Offer disappointing weekend in monaco. Things want looking great for mercedes today with lewis hamilton. Even coming on the ray j during the second session of the day saying but he doesn't know what the time is an f. p. one hamilton finish p. seven and voucher us ten whilst. Fb to neither mercedes made into the top ten how much and finishing p eleven a second over pace of such a peres while tasks was down in peace succeed. I'm joined today by Tat jake boxer leg to chat through today's practice sessions. Jbl you how's everything going today. You said you're very very busy. It always is on a friday. Because you've got two sessions if he's wearing that weekend as well as two sessions for that and various other people coming in which we deal with and obviously practices. Well for me. It's the first chance i get to see new bits and pieces coming onto the cause What the teams Of thinking with regards to set up and how they're trying to approach the weekend early so it's very busy day. We usually end up fishing on friday. But it's all good fun and talking of setup and things that you might have i'd upstate. Is there anything that did catch. I anything that you can chat with our listeners. The sure thing. And i think this goes for every race we have. I think pretty much. Every year because the circuit is we will very split. We've got that massive long straight but this also the old town section as well with the corners is much more tight of course you got ninety degree corners as well and so it's a real balancing act between do we go all out and shave all of the drag of this car. Go for the straight line speed and end up with less downforce. Maybe struggled a bit sector two or d trion go down the middle which i think most teams do or not you throw it all the sexy that you lose a lot of time on the on the straight and it's not something that you would really do but each sector it on. This course is very different from the last. So there's there's a lot to consider a and you'll see lots of different teams trialing lots of different rear wings. Red bull had different rear wings in in practice to see which was best for them to get mys- performance in a straight line but also say when it comes to ten seven eight nine ten eleven nicer those turns having enough downforce to you get the acceleration and the drive off this as well. So it's it's a real challenge for the engineers to get their heads around. It definitely is and going into this weekend. We've seen order. The drive is playing down the potential performance of that. 'cause but today we've seen the calls on track match until paying. Fb ron such peres. Fb two now. The staffing has never actually been on page him hat whereas paris had to pay gm's but it is abundantly clear. How strong the red bull call is this year on that once can't coming into the weekend looking very dominant in comparison to that collapses capacity who will of course touch on may two run. But tell us about what you saw from. The red bull runs in today's sessions. In the the first of all i think the perez said off the session having talked. Fb to that. He finally feel that he's got the measure of the ripple car and he said that start of the season it might take five or six rounds to be able to get comfortable with the car. And it's very different than anything. He's ever driven before he striven the so force india slash racing point lineage of cause for quite a long time and say this red bull which alex album gasoline struggled with that kind of ethos. He's had to get used to that and he seems to have found something easily. Waste on very well here. Pacu as well So a been a good very good session for him as well. I when i was watching an efi one also wondering where the time was coming from. Khas ferrari looks very very good in particular with regards to straight line. Speed does is writing the corners very very well and rebel source in the middle sector. But they seem to have got it back together now and they seem to be strong everywhere which is again as i said at the top. Something that you really need to drill down on having that flexibility with your setup to be strong in every single sector on this track and rebel seems to.

Daniel ricardo five Sergio perez Tat jake today friday usa one minute Norris six rounds ninety degree two sessions nicholas this year One second session one each sector first chance forty three point

"First topic for discussion today. Something actually we chat about quite regularly last year. But i haven't had the chance to go in depth on the costs over the christmas and new year break. I'm not reports driver lineup. Now of course we now know that. Sergio perez has been signed to partner. Max for slapping while. Alex album is team last year. And so the second half of two thousand nine hundred has been made. The team's reserve driver album also compete in the revamped. Dm category in twenty. Twenty ways efan commitments. Allow this and we understand. He'll be driving a ferrari. Four eight eight. Gt three alongside rebel genius liam northern. How big a hit. The think being mighty back to reserve driver an out formula one in terms of racing for at least a you know a whole calendar year. How do you think that how big hit that. he's f f one ambitions. yes he can. I think that it is so different when we saw by pierre gasoline daniel via meet similar fight when they were sent back to toro rosso and that them released the chance kind of rebuild that career and keep racing in athlon keeps it of all not rada christine made clear a few weeks folded station and the end of the season. That if alvin didn't get a rebel safe next year he will be our. Beth won't completely on on the sidelines. Although the team has said he's gonna be undertaken an extensive testing and development program with a view to twenty twenty. Eight doesn't really give much of a chance to actually sort of show. Boy he can do in really strike back and before about something the by them caveat when he made his his second comeback with taurasi s scoring podium nine and of cpi guiseley to an enormous two great right away three twenty twenty that were both able to rebuild and get these big results. The made everyone go. Oh well they're still decent. They're still performing and day. She for the albany. He doesn't really have the opportunity and going into a very sort of new. Dtm series with the gt three rules that they're updating ultimately not raced in ten tops. Ever i don't think so. I think that's going to be a big change for him and yeah i think it's just a it's it is a real big sat back and i think the full red bull i think just got say i don't really see what he goes from hits bonus nothing gets allows useful. Okay he's going to be playing such a big role in that too much to development. I think unless peres absolutely stinking year in that say realistically red bull going to be looking out. But if someone's come back with twenty twenty because are they need. Wii the perez goes beyond the initial one year contract. He signed or they'll look further into janea program if he's not has an amazing first year without tariff some let your e bits really stand out. I don't know me album just seems in this way. It's sort of purgatory state right now. I don't know where he's actually gonna

"Wants twenty. Twenty borrowing took place today in sakir circuit. There's max stop into the win but the race was really overshadowed by a horrifying crash. Perhaps driver rugova. We survived his car bursting into flames of being sentenced barriers on that one following contact with alfred driver via the race was red flagged immediately after the accident and thankfully it soon emerged that grows have been able to escape. The inferno is being treated by the f. as medical crew. You played a vital part. And he's escape from the fire. Gordon was taken to the track's medical center and was then airlifted hospital from which he was assessed to suffered no broken bones but does have burns to his hands and ankles goes without saying we wish him well in his recovery and express our sincere relief at seeing him survived the accident after delay of one hour and twenty minutes is the barriers were repaired actually replace concrete blocks the race restarted with another great start. Concern was able to regain easily lead away things quickly. Boil down to a two horse race between the mercedes driver. Invest happen with how it's appearing to have things under control. The second stint was the biggest moment of danger of hamilton match. Step up in space on the hearts or looking after he'd softer mediums. They both ended up on the hard after their second stops after which for stopping closed in despite his own stop being a slow one but he never got within three seconds of the mercedes driver up from rebel in fact opted to pit the doctrine for a third time. Giving you had a large gap in hand over sergio perez behind peres was in third of the voucher tacit made a poor start and slipped backwards at town one which had paid to spark a series of smaller incidents that ended later crash which is of course not to say that there was any blame any of them peres done a fine job to run alex album in the second way boat and he looked set for a second successive podium until his engine let go with four laps remaining the race therefore finished under safety car hamilton. Taking his eleventh win of the campaign album completed the podium so joining me to discuss all of that and more tonight motorsport dot dotcoms f. one editor noble or tie sports. Fm reporter leaks and keep racing's executive editor. Stuart coddling now is gonna come to you first because you and i were in pretty constant throughout the early stages of that racist so trying to piece together what was going on once. We need that. Romain grosjean was all right. We try not. That's make sure. I raced on facebook dot com dot com accuracy. Accurate as it could be when it comes. I just just if you don't mind you could. You could talk us through the first thought and ended up the crash at the end of it. I could almost look through a transcript of whatsapp messages. Couldn't i is Yeah it wasn't very pleasant work actually a a not particularly nice to at the time given that we began the price s Before we knew what happens actually to out and before we okay we were starting to pick over some of the details leading up to the accident and and like you say it's it's one of those shunts is an accumulation of snow events and people doing things that builds towards a conclusion and and it does start with valerie. Batas having a slough guess away. He seemed to get away. When the lights went out he go to wipe perfectly well but then in the second phase acceleration not so much He wasn't the person off. Com was slough away was passed by morrison and gas lay album perez and then ricardo got passed batas. And that just meant that. You had this situation wearing bahrain. Three calls can go through taiwan abreast. Really won't you can get through ten to breast so that that's an. That's a natural funnel point that sort of vestibule between two warm an intern take so so you had basically people sorting things out with each other just just looking at my notes this squeezes all the way down the field and so i you have lewis getting a clean gas away. The stepan going through as well and then album sort of makes it stick and get through and you have ricardo an album sort of alongside each other and sorting out between themselves. That causes potus to slightly cheque's pace. Maybe a little bit through through turn to and then further back you have squeezes. You have leclerc veterans stroll who are also three abreast through san juan clerk. Poor gas away and then sent for a deeply into turn one see. Have an awful lot of people who are trying to make up ground. Having got a poor start so you have the situation where bats seems to be a little bit. As as album gets ahead of riccardo norris taps ghastly science has to get out of the throttle to avoid that squeeze with with with having to check up ahead of him vattel. Who's then arriving. Kind of three abreast with strollers rights. The clerk and his right has to check very hard to avoid running into the back of what's ahead of him. Hey jinx right stroll goes rights and then creates a scenario where. There's a lot of slow moving traffic and grow. John arrives at that scene. Say's all those costs loving ahead. You have reichen going off track on the left in an attempt to go around the so the slow moving cars and i think garage unnaturally in the heat of the moment goes to the right May be of either forgetting or not observing the caveat. He's five o'clock almost an caveat sunny there because he's been in a squeeze with with the alfa romeo's he's been slide down because he's had pretty much guy over the apex turn to avoid clunking into magnusson. If if if my notes reflect this accurately so all circumstances kind of build into into what we saw happen of very very fiery accident and one that was very scary indeed it was becomes. Talk about the really terrifying. The copying on fire grudge having to escape the inferno league. I wonder if we could just come to you. What is the latest information. We have at the time of recording about jones conditioning hospital so gross on as seen on the world fit. He was transported from the Initially exciting the medical card in the ambulance and the medical center and he was quick. They were quick to report that he had some burns to his hands and his ankles and then reports that he was being taken to the barring military hospital with suspected broken ribs and they've been conducted all of the x rays and all the checks her quiet out those to the east number bones which is really good news and the diagnosed that come back with the burns to the back of his hand. Side of c will require treatment. He's gonna remain sel overnights. They can complete treatment and Keep them on vacation base. Leads sure everything is okay. But remind he's in good spirits. He spoke to consign. He spoke to his family on the phone as well and then he also put a video up on instagram.
