"What is this book? What the heck is this book? What is it? The main thing I got from it was like this sense of feeling seen and validated, but why does it have to be this way? This book was placed in my hand for this moment. Insightful learned a lot, wrote some quotes that I'm ready to paint on my wall. I love this book. That we just got to pull out some of the big things that we see in terms of what a few different ones. I apologize if most of my contribution has KPop references. Alternative book title the feminine mystique part two, you were really just gay all along. This week we have a wonderful guest, Jessica, just camping park is a friend from here in Chicago. She is a self proclaimed Elena ferrante superfan, and she also minored in Italian, which we learned today, which will be really interesting to hear your insight. And you lived there for a little bit. As a student. So super cool. Welcome Jessica. Thanks. Excited to be here. We haven't had a guest in a little while. Yeah, it's been a minute. Well, I mean, we Thanksgiving. Christmas. Oh, yes, we did Christmas episodes with our family. It was fun. This week we are talking about my brilliant friend by Elena ferrante, which is our first book that we've done on the podcast in translation, which is super exciting. It was originally written in Italian. The author is actually anonymous, aleta fronte is a pseudonym. And she has been active writing since 1992. This book is part of the Neapolitan novels. It was the first one, and this was it came out in English in 2012. And then every year after that for four years, it was another novel, which is insane how fast this is so long. Yeah, that these were cranked out. Writing them, getting them translated and published. Insane. It almost makes me wonder if she had them all done first. That's my gun. My gut is that she had the done. The way they flow and the way that the books interact with each other, I'm not sure I see how it could have been done that way. So to clarify, you have read all four. Okay. I read all four and I will be doing my best to not spoil the next three books. Yeah. Yeah, and then I'm on board to Victoria's finished book one. So we're all slightly different places, but yes. Yeah, so book to the story of a new name, came out in 2013. Those who leave in those who stay in 2014, and then the final book, the story of the lost child in 2015. There isn't a lot known about the author's Ben some people who done research to try to dig up who the author is, which seems pretty invasive. To me, there was an Italian investigative reporter who published article back in 2016 that tried to reveal her identity using financial records related to real estate sales and royalty payments and narrowed it on a person and then this other research group out of university, which I'm like, okay, who is funding you to invade someone's life, but they did a textual analysis of all these Italian authors. And identified the person who was previously identified by the journalist, identified her husband, but then she's also been known to edit a lot of his work, so it's like, did her writing influence mean something there and then a lot of fronte through her publisher dismissed the suggestion that she is a man, so there's a lot of questions out there, but for my perspective, it's not important who the author is here and kind of cool to have some sort of mystery laugh when it comes to celebrity names. We literally don't know who you are. Kind of like Banksy or something. Yeah. I do think it's important that it's a woman. Like that's the one important piece of it for me. I don't care who she is, but I do think it's important that it's a woman because of the way she writes about female friendship, the way she writes about women in general. And I find it fascinating. We're going to talk about some of these things later, but the way that even just the response to her being anonymous plays out some of the themes that she's so specifically writes about in her books about violence against women and identity and men being successful off the curtails of women. There's all these very fascinating things that kind of prove some of the themes that she wrote about in her book based on people's responses to her choice to say anonymous. Yeah. And in my mind, I think it almost makes the sort of, because we were talking about how these feel really autobiographical. And the fact that she chose the name Elena as her pseudonym, and that's the name of the sort of main narrator's character. The girl who ends up writing. And so it almost feels like because we don't know her life, the life of the author, it feels like these are actually written by Ellen and Greco. And so like, I think that's also really powerful that it feels. It almost makes her feel more like a real person. This main character is like, to really telling her real story. And she just changed her last name in the game in the book. You know what I mean? That's kind of what it feels like. Which I really love. There's a million names you could have chosen. Right. And you chose the same name as your protagonist, does your pending? I didn't realize it was a pseudonym, literally until today when I was doing research, and I just, when I got to the first point where someone calls the narrator by her name, I'm like, oh, it must be semi autobiographical. Okay. And just keeps raining LinkedIn. And kind of question that. What you're saying, Julie, it reminds me of lemony snicket almost, where the narrator seems almost anonymous with the author. Yeah. And it's very self referential. And that's a little more of a quirky way and like lemony snicket. We do know who is behind that pseudonym, but makes the author feel like a character in a way. Yeah, yeah. Either semi autobiographical and you know it or you've got a pseudonym kind of relating the character with the narrator. Lemonade sting it addresses the reader directly. Yeah, yeah. Very much like he is writing to me. Yeah. But yeah. This is the first book in a series that I've picked up in a while that wasn't children's or young adult fiction, and that was really refreshing. Like I'm really excited that there's three more books about these characters. I hadn't thought about that because the only series books I think are like children's books. Harry Potter, Twilight, those kind of books or even like my mom reads like murder mysteries that Lincoln altogether, but they're not like high literature. They're not genre fiction. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's not like a really beautifully written book that also has like three sequels to it. Yeah. It's kind of like what I want out of most novels. I never get to interact with these characters again. Like, what is this? And the author goes off to write other probably really good books. And I'm like, what about this character? I already feel that way. Like at the end of four, I'm already like, do I reread them? Read them in English. Do I attempt to read them in Italian and take ten years to get through them? What do I do with this? Yeah. Do I petition her to write it from multiple people's perspectives? Because I would read this entire series again from Lila's perspective. Yeah, oh, that would be fun. I'm tired of getting. Oh no, it remains the narrator through all four. Interesting. I almost wonder if it was

When can i just kind of get chalked chatting between ourselves. We're really just to up. That is genuine. That is honest so we're not always quite as good at making it through the chat to highlight comments and answer questions and stuff even less so when we're out at a park but i still feel like if you wanted that kind of organic friend conversation and that one was legit was honest and then on top of that i i feel i have earned a reputation for being very cranky about samsung and when we talk in general consumer tech org smartphone conversations average consumer kind of stuff. And so i joined their podcast. Let's chat dax. This actually recorded early sunday morning. And i think this was a pretty good conversation even though i was barely into my first cup of coffee and i was definitely groggy for like the first couple of minutes but kind of digging a little bit deeper into the philosophy of not just using your phone for more. You know just not not just trying to get more gadget bang for buck but then also like. How do we support these initiatives. And how do we improve the visibility of them. Because i kind of feel like decks is days are likely numbered. If z flip three make samsung a lot of money and it doesn't have decks then. That's kind of evidence that they don't need to keep including those types of features on future devices so it's like an hour and a half real conversation but just what some additional padding on me being a bit groggy but now wow my in clear my throat right in front of the microphone here hype train level five so i pull pervy rock in my socks here paul just gifted tier one subs to dsl thorn in. Ladies, We Need To Talk
Propping up your partner
"I have thought about leaving. He's never said, but I know that if I did leave and I, took the kids away on, either he would be dead. Within a few years. I honestly fell. The rug had been pulled out from underneath saying. Hey, kind of went to bed saying. I do love you and I feel better than having told you. All each. Glad you feel better because I feel I absolute crap. Going into a romantic partnership, we make some assumptions. That will share work US strengths communicate kindly and be more or less equal. So, what happens when life? Chuck's YOU NASTY SURPRISE? The balanced gets let of Wack and your original dynamic ends up totally lopsided. I do think that women are more prone to take on the partners problems. They will get much more emotionally enmeshed oven. They partners problem and almost lose if it's the problem. This is not a design fault of women. We ask socialized and acted to manage the emotions of people around us, and it is a given that in any relationship they will be times when one person is up and one person's down, and maybe you get to take turns being bit awesome and sometimes being a bit lousy. But in opinion this. You one side of Aleta your partner is the other the wrongs in between at a life. You've built together. Kids harm life. What if instead of being your reliable half? Your partner has collapsed. That other beam is gone and now the entire thing. Is counting on you. If that's. How do you summon the strength to be everything? Is it possible to care for your loved one and not take it along. And when you compensate for their deficiencies. You actually helping or just enabling hopeless pot to remain heartless forever. I'm you me Stein's ladies? We need to talk about propping up your partner. Of course is always a need to support one another. And one would hope that over the ebbs and flows is sort of some degree of mutuality. Clinical psychologist and psychotherapist Dr Jackie Wind ship. In this episode, we're going to hear from two women one supporting her partner through A. And One, his partner has depression, and we're going to break one of our own hard and fast rules that when you've held sacred for over forty episodes and four seasons of this podcast the first time ever we'll hear from a man that's coming up. I though to kick us off. Dr He's going to help us understand how to support our partners through the most trying of times. Says women are particularly prone to letting out boundaries. Sleep when someone needs us. Propping up can also mean that you somehow. Hard that you're actually doing too much and I think that is a pitfall that women in particular need to watch out for just because we're socialized to be self sacrifice and put a need second, and I think it's very easy to then get into quite dysfunctional patterns in trying to prop up a partner that. Are Harmful for the woman and also actually don't really help. Resolve the problem. More help the partner. Do you commonly see being the woman propping up her partner? I think it can go both ways, but I do think that women are more prone to take on the partners problems whereas men tend to be able to hold a little bit more of a distance I'm over generalizing but. That would be my impression. Boundaries a really important in human relationships, so if your supporting or propping up a partner why boundaries especially important then. Because otherwise you become so enmeshed. That it's almost like you lose your identity completely and you become. Them and the problem that they are dealing with, and it also deprives the person's got the problem of being able to have their own self identity in that as well. The two of you kind of mood in a particular way, we say in psychology you know that when there's a merger, only one person said entity can survive. Only one person's reality can survive in a way. It's bad for the person who's doing the caring up. Because they lose their sense of self and become completely consumed by the issue of the problem, but it's also bad for the other person that you're trying to help. Because they experienced their identity, their agency gets somehow taken away. I mean with every relationship is a bit of a balance in a to and fro, and one person may have skills in one department, which the other doesn't. It fits almost like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle is. How do you know if you're crossing over into over functioning? I think when you find that you're doing. More to fix the problem. Your partner is definitely over functioning I think when you start finding yourself feeling angry and resentful. You're over functioning. I think when you find that you keep offering solutions and your partner keeps knocking them back and saying yes, but that won't work because of XYZ. Differently over functioning it's okay to try and help and particularly to help them to help themselves such OSCO partner. What can I do to help? Rather than assuming that you know what the right thing is for them to support positive actions that they're taking, but not to be the one to be trying to make all the positive actions happen and your partners dragging along in your wake. You WanNa be your partners. Cheerleader and you want to say I've got your back. Support You I. Believe in you. You've got this. You can do it,
