Hate crimes charges for synagogue shooting suspect

"The man accused of shooting up the power synagogue near San Diego already already pled not guilty to state charges of murder and attempted murder. Now, the feds have their turn this federal complaint alleges that these crimes were explicitly. Motivated by hatred toward the Jewish and Muslim communities ABC's Alec stone joins us on the KOMO Newsline from southern California, and Alex what are the federal charges? He adds one hundred nine eight crimes counts Taylor against John. Or an and prosecutors say it's clear down the nineteen year old carried out his attack on the synagogue and tried to set fire to a mosque in nearby Escondido about a month and a half ago out of hatred for the Jewish and Muslim communities and what they are. It's fifty four counter obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs and fifty four four screw civically hate crimes, and these could get them the death penalty, it'll be up to the attorney general the US attorney general if they want to go for the death penalty. So as down would be life in prison, and this will go on concurrently with those state charges that you mentioned a moment ago. They'll probably figure out one goes before the other. But they could go essentially at the same time. But because the death penalty is in play on the federal side potentially that they may go I they could give them the death penalty in California and the state charges as well. But the governor here governor Gavin Newsom is essentially ended the the death penalty in this state. So if they decide they wanna go that route the federal route is the way they would likely go, and what are we learning today about the accused gunman in what he did leading onto and shortly after the attack. Yeah, we know that he bought the gun or at least got it the day before. So he really wasn't very familiar with it on. He got it that Friday, and then he allegedly carried out the shooting on the Saturday. I was a long gun that he used a rifle when he walked in. There bought it legally from a licensed firearms dealer in San Diego. And apparently wasn't very good a reloading it because when he ran out of bullets after he fires the ten that were in the cliff yet other clips on his. Vest. He was wearing a tactical vest. But he was in rushed by a veteran and an off-duty border patrol agent. And they said he looked very nervous, and he ran away at that point and gotten his car, and then drove off that he wasn't able to reload. We know he'd been called nine one one he called the California Highway Patrol from his cell phone saying he wanted to surrender and according to this complaint. He said, quote, I just shot up a synagogue. I'm trying to defend my nation from the Jewish people. They're destroying our people. I opened fire at a synagogue. I think I killed some people end quote. And then he told that call taker I he did it because Jewish people are destroying the white race. That will prosecutors say this is a very clear cut case of a hate crime. And Alex, we know from your reporting a couple of days ago before you left for the Colorado shooting that during this Muslim month of Ramadan. This attack at the synagogue and the attack in New Zealand is forcing mosques. To hire extra security guards. Yeah, that's right. And really places of worship in general are doing it. Synagogues or doing the same thing. But mosques reporting that they are bringing on extra armed security because I specially during this very important month. "Alec stone joins us from LA. What's possibly down the pike? Alex. Tom. Well, this has been a long debate in California over high speed rail, and it's kinda come to a head recently. Where governor Gavin Newsom here said, well, it's not gonna work between LA, and San Francisco has had been planned now, they're changing it to between Merced shed and Bakersfield, which a lot of people are now calling that a train to nowhere at Democrats have been very much for the train Republicans against it. They've gone back and forth. There is a Republican state. Senator Erin, California who is now entered a Bill John moorland is his name where he says, you know, what let's fix this. Let's let cars go as fast as a high speed rail. He says let's get rid of on interstate five and on ninety nine up the central valley of California the speed limit in new lanes. It would be built if you want to go the regular speed limit going the lanes that are there right now they would add two lanes each direction on both the highways, and they would have no speed limit. All here's what he told me. It's sort of an autobahn concept. We're just saying if you wanna get people from LA to San Francisco and vice versa. Let's give them the ability to do. So either with an electric car their own car or even a self driving car, and he says the autobahn is safer than our highways right now, he says, you wouldn't be doing the as many people know when you're you're on the wide open stretches, the breaking behind big rigs is past one another and then speeding up. He says everybody would be allowed in the fast lanes would only be passenger vehicles. It would be going fast. And there is the point when you drive these long stretches many times, you look down at your speedometer, and you're actually doing eighty five, and you don't know you are and he says in modern vehicles. He believes it is safe the wheels not shattering the car is not trying to keep up that that it is it safe to go one hundred miles an hour and go between LA and San Francisco in three hours. The very least I can I can think of some parents that wouldn't be thrilled with this just a point at one potential group of trouble. But what's what's been the feedback to this in general, Alex? Well, you know, I asked him exactly that he says he hasn't gotten a ton yet because they didn't hold a news conference a quietly entered this on Friday, not thinking it was that big of a deal or that there would be much interest. And he says he's getting a lot of recalls from reporters right now. But he assumes that Democrats in the state legislature in California are going to be very much against it. ABC's Alec stone. The Carfax report said his Ford had been a rental car for seven months before he bought it. It's information John wishes he had known.
