"Wasn't a huge difference to that I say Jerry AJ thanks a lot. Yeah. Big two GM's at random, you know? January and early February a little slow, but then we're into preview podcast time. So again, no rubric here for what we are drafting if you can even call this drafting so we're not doing this is the best deal from a dollar's per war perspective or we thought this was a steal or something. Yeah, there may be some of those where we thought, oh, this is a smart signing and this is a good deal, but it might also just be moves that we found interesting or players going to certain teams that we thought that was a fun fit or just whatever was the most fun to discuss at the time. So we'll just see where it takes us. Yeah, and I so I have a couple in mind and then I will invariably panic and go off my board. So, you know, we have that to look forward to. But I want to I want to say something because we are kind of loosey goosey here and we're just, you know, we're going on vibes and limited sleep. I have a couple in mind that are like broad categories of things and I am here to tell you Ben that I am not saying that any particular transaction that fits within that broad category is off the board. I think that if you want to draft X player signing with Y team and I have previously taken insert trend that you can just do that. I think that that's fine. How does that feel fair? Yeah, I have a couple on my list that are not even technically transactions. We could see whether you allow them or not. Okay. But all right, you want to start, I don't think she starts. Okay, so I'm going to start with one of these very, very broad trend things. Okay. I have enjoyed this off season the creation of what how do we want to workshop this? What do I want to call it? I'm going to call it the black box outfield. I have enjoyed Toronto has done this, the twins have done this. Where they're just like, what if we just made the entire outfield out of center fielders, you know? What if we just created an entire outfield at a center fielders and we will never allow flyball to the airfield to fall on the grass ever again. And so I appreciate it, 'cause I think, you know, there are, there are pictures on both of these teams who are quite good bun, you know? It's not as if Alec manoa or Kevin gausman are slouches. We don't know what Jose barrios is, but I'm excited to find out. And you know, Minnesota has fortified their rotation in trade. And so that's cool. You know, I'm excited to see Pablo Lopez as a twin. I wonder Pablo Lopez is excited to see bob will be the twin. I guess we're gonna find out. Yeah, he has never much choice in the matter either. It doesn't. And you know, we're gonna get, you know, we're getting good. Sonny gray and Joe Ryan, they got all kinds of weird, funny starters there, you know? And so I don't want to denigrate the pitching staff so these respective teams. But I do like the idea of just saying, look, a lot of ways to secure outs and one way is to just have a black box outfield that is entirely composed of center fielders. So that is my first pick. Yeah, that's a good one. I like a great defensive outfield going back to the Kansas City Royals of the mid last decade when they would deploy their ultimate outfield. They would have Alex Gordon and they would have Lorenzo Cain and then when they would just roll out Dyson made innings that was really fun because at that point Cain would go to write and nori aoki was the starter at the time and so if you put Dyson out there in center, then it was just like well there will be no more hits to the outfield at this point. Yeah, so you have to weigh the offensive subtraction that you get when that happens, but the late innings shut down defense. Gosh, those teams were so fun. They were just on the outfield, but also the late innings, bullpen, and all the rest of it. I missed those words. But yeah, that kind of gave me a taste, I think, for the elite defensive outfield. We've seen some since then. But yeah, I mean, I was going to take maybe I still will, but maybe I won't have to now, but I was just going to take the Dalton part show trade. This was exactly what I had in mind when I said, if you want to take your Ben, I say you should do that. I guess I will. I might have enough on my board not to need to, but what the heck? Well, we're on the subject. I think I will take the entire show trade. And not even for either side, just the Dalton version trade, which you can trade. Yeah, you could call it the Gabriel Moreno trade. You could call it the Lourdes grille junior trade. I'm not picking sides here necessarily. I'm just saying this trade was a ton of fun as I said at the time. The puja is getting Dalton varsho from the Diamondbacks and then Gabrielle Moreno and junior going back to the Diamondbacks. This is just, that was so much fun and it was just so satisfying because it was such a sensible fit. Most trades you can at least sort of squint and see why each team is making this trade and what they think they're getting. So there's usually some sort of need being filled on both sides. But in this case, it was just so, so clean, so elegant, predictable almost. I mean, people had looked at the blue Jason Diamondbacks and said, oh, it seems like there's probably a fit here because the Diamondback said in excess of outfielders and the Blue Jays had an excess of catchers and the Blue Jays not only needed outfielders, they needed left handed hitting, outfielders, and just to balance their lineup a little such a righty heavy lineup. Yeah, there was Dalton varsho. It could work out well for both teams that could work out well for one team more than the other, the Diamondbacks didn't have great organizational catching depth so they got one of the best young catchers in the game and they also got curry out back and really just like so much to analyze and speculate about because our show is a player who I think he has star potential, like one of the better players in baseball type potential but then you're not quite sure that he's that great yet and there's some ways in which you could suggest maybe he might regress a bit and obviously he's such an interesting player what with

"Yes, your Marriott points were not needed in the city of Seattle for 20 years. Yeah, it's been a sad state of affairs to the point where I still do talk with Mike sock and procured who are radio hosts up in Seattle and I think I started going on the show, boy, it's probably been 5, 6 years now. And they had a theme song for me before every segment I did with them. Here's how it went. Jeff passon, the wet blanket, ray non parades, harsh and buzz is all day. That was, I was known. As the wet blanket in Seattle, and at the end, at the end of that, it had a drop of me going, they're gonna be bad. Because they were bad for so long. And so to see this team now, this exciting, enjoyable, fun team. This team that has rekindled my love with this franchise that she grew up rooting for. It really has. Everybody in Seattle right now has been arrested by this Mariners team because, man, they are a blast to watch. So explain why they're so fun, Jeff, if you're one of the people who has listened perhaps to that segment and checked out of the Mariners because they felt just the moisture of that blanket. What have they been missing? Well, let's start with what was missing until this season. His name is Julio Rodriguez. He is a 21 year old center Fielder and he might be the most dynamic player in baseball right now. First time we've ever seen somebody in his rookie season, get 25 home runs and 25 stolen bases. He's a guy who evaluators thought was just going to be a power hitting corner outfielder, but this winter, he put his mind to becoming a center Fielder. He is their franchise player. He is a franchise player, he's the American League rookie of the year. But it's not just him. The Mariners have in a very short amount of time gone from having no pitching to having one of the best starting rotations in baseball. And when you take those four guys into this playoff series against this Toronto line up there going to be facing in roger center, you better have that type of pitching if you want to survive. And so does all of that. All of those vibes, all of the vibes you're trying to make up for, Jeff. After two decades now, does that mean that this team is going to beat the Toronto Blue Jays? I hate to be the wet blanket. Oh my God, I can not. Of course you're doing this. Of course. Of course. The Toronto blue Jays Pablo have the sneakiest chance, I think, of anyone to get to the World Series. Now, I am not suggesting that the Seattle Mariners do not have it in them to beat the Blue Jays because the Blue Jays do have some weaknesses. You wonder about the depth of their starting pitching. Alec manoa is a gangster. We have established that here before he's awesome. Kevin gausman, as we call him in the baseball tonight green room, the fip God, because he doesn't walk anyone, he strikes out a lot. Fip is also known for the record here as fielding independent pitching, which is another acronym that would absolutely just infuriate old toss rat born. Yes, I can't tell you how many times when gausman has been pitching on a Sunday. I have sat around and just said out loud in the green room. And kirchen looks at me, like, what are you talking about, Jeff? That's great. But Kevin gausman can be a dominant starting pitcher. Beyond that, and you're talking about October being a time when home runs matter, the Blue Jays will bang them if you hang them. And on top of that, if there is a single place, this postseason that confers a home field advantage, it is roger center. It's a kind of crappy old stadium, but it is so loud in there and the fans in Toronto go wild for this Blue Jays team when it's good. I think they have a really good chance and are my pick to advance in what I think will probably be the most enjoyable of the four series, no disrespect to Matt's Padres, which has the most talent, no disrespect to guardians rays, which is the nerds delight. A little bit of disrespect to cardinals and Phillies, but you know, disrespect with love. Jeff hasten at the very end here, there's only one thing that we should be playing at Rogers center volume. And I think you know what song it is. Raining operates, harsh and buzz is all day. They're gonna have bad years coming up. The wettest blanket in all of sports. Thank you, as always, for joining us. I am yours in dampness, Pablo. What does this cost? I'm Pablo Torre. This has been ESPN daily. And our show is produced by Bradford Craig, Alexander hyacinth, Mike Johns, Heather lombardo, Ryan mantel, like philbrick, Andy tennant, Chris two manella, and Aaron Vail. Special thanks this week to Andre Soto, Scott zakowski, Amanda Winkler, Maddie Rudd, tyrus ray, and Jackson Angelo. I'll talk to you Monday.

"Talkative. I saw you in the dugout the other day with chap and you guys had like this handshake going on, are you the one that has a handshake with everyone or is it Chapman? I kind of have it with everyone. He has, he has with all kind of have it with each other. And I've kind of joined in the fun over the years. So I like to kind of connect with guys like that right before the game. It's been interesting to watch John Schneider kind of mold into that manager role because I think when he was previously the bench coats, I wouldn't say it's easy, but it's one year this sort of number two in charge. You can kind of be a friend and a buddy to the players, but obviously shifting over to the manager role. He's got to kind of walk that line where he does actually still. And I think he's done it really well, honestly, where he is still the player's friend. He wants them to be comfortable with him and he's comfortable with them. He wants to keep them loose because he thinks the Blue Jays are playing their best when they're loose and having fun. And I think there's a lot of truth to that. I think this Blue Jays team does play a lot better when they're having fun out there and playing their style of aggressive baseball, but he also knows when it's time to talk to a player. He's talked a lot about accountability and the accountability starts with him and the coaching staff. But he's going to hold players accountable as well. And so it's definitely been a different style of baseball somewhat that they've been playing. We've seen them be a lot more aggressive with their running along the base pass. That's really stood out. John Schneider seems to be more willing to steal bases, put on the hit and run, which is kind of fun. Sometimes it's worked, sometimes it's not worked, but that's definitely been the style so far. Speaking of this team having fun, I saw something about a DJ coming into the Clubhouse. Yeah, over the past home stand in Toronto, John Schneider just had the idea that he would invite a DJ and so when we came to the Blue Jays Clubhouse on it was Saturday, we walked into the Clubhouse and there's a DJ in the middle and he's spinning beats and playing Justin Bieber remixes and all this kind of stuff. So it was really fun. It's one of those things where they played a night game in the next day. It's kind of a quick turnaround day game. Sometimes it can be a little bit like dead in the morning there because guys are tired and so it just kind of livened up the day and you know that's a very, when I saw it I kind of laughed because it's very John and I were saying to do kind of like wanting to surprise the players a little bit and just have them have some fun be comfortable there. So yeah, that was definitely a new thing walking into the Blue Jays Clubhouse and seeing a DJ. That's a first and it was first for me and I think it was the first for most of the players. That's amazing. Well, turning now to the performances on the field. This is a team that has seen Vladimir Guerrero junior come up short of the all world numbers. He put up last year and another son of a former big leaguer Bo Bichette isn't living up to his standards either. But one guy who seems to be exceeding expectations is second year picture Alec manoa. And that's the second piece of this equation we want to focus on. So can you first just tell us about manoa's impact as a pitcher? Sure, yeah. So manoa has been so impressive to watch and I remember him coming up last year kind of early on in the season and he hadn't even pitched that much in triple-A and overall he didn't even have a ton of pro innings because he lost the 2020 season because of the pandemic and he was only drafted in 2019. And so the Blue Jays had an opening in their rotation so they called him up and he is not looked back ever since. And that's sort of the biggest takeaway for him is that he just lives for the moment. He's really competitive. He goes out there. He's been incredible with pitching with runners on. Basically when runners get on, he just kind of shoves and he's really hard to score against. He's a beast and he's got another gear with runners in scoring position when he runs into trouble. So he's definitely I think put his name out there for one of the top guys in the league. He can kind of count on a quality start every time he's out there. He's got one of the best ERAs among starters in the American League. He was an all star. And I think he really shined on that big stage. The Blue Jays overall winning record when he's on the mound is really, really good. He's got 11 or 12 wins, I think this year pitcher wins. And so he's just been really dominant for them on the mound. And honestly, it's really impressive just given that he's only in his second year, pitching and you look at him and if Luigi's get to the postseason, you're honestly having a conversation. A game one starter. Hammer Kevin Osmond at this point. Well, Manila is also a guy who has a pretty dynamic personality. And for a lot of baseball fans, they were first introduced to that at the All-Star Game. So for anyone who missed it or just wants to relive the magic, can you remind us what happened when manoa was miked up while pitching at Dodger Stadium? He's the perfect guy to Mike up and I think he just had a lot of fun with the broadcasters. Alec minoa takes the mound for the AL and he does so wearing a earpiece in a microphone. Alec, how you doing? I'm good, I'm good I'm good. Here we go. And he was kind of asking their advice. Like, what do you want me to throw? What do you want me to throw? What do you want me to do it on though? John? John, what do you want? Back foot slider. Down and low. Oh, you're sexy. Here we go. No. Yeah. He was throwing. He was commenting and he was striking guys out and he was having a lot of fun with it. He struck three guys out. Right down the middle, but we'll take it 300. Let's go. Congratulations. Thank you for doing this. Here are the best man. Right there. And his personality just shined on the big stage, and that just goes back to, like I said, he doesn't shy away from these big moments. He embraces it, and he loves it. Both in having fun, but also just being ultra competitive and knowing he's gonna go out there and shine and put his best foot forward. The third storyline we wanted to look at surrounding this team is the chemistry. And specifically Caitlin, one example you wrote about that centers around third baseman Matt Chapman, a home run trot and the bullpen. So can you tell us that story? Yeah, so this was a bit news to me. I only found out about it because last home stand they played and Matt Chapman hit a home run and he'd been hitting a lot of home runs lately. He was on a tear. And the Blue Jays bullpen, the reliever was kind of came out and really, really celebrated this home run and the broadcast cameras caught it, and they sort of told the story. They were having a little thing with him recently because whenever he Homer does he rounded second, he did not acknowledge the relievers, which is something he is supposed to do. So they got on him and he's he now points out to them and look at how intently they are looking out there. So basically the backstory is this is that typically when a lot of the Blue Jays hitters hit a home run, they just give a little nod to the bullpen. So they raise their finger, they might point to the bullpen. Just as they're rounding the bases, it's been a thing. And they just noticed that Matt Chapman wasn't doing it. And they kind of said, hey, is this a thing? Why isn't he doing it? And they kind of started to chirp match at me a little bit. Like, hey, why aren't you giving us a knot? Everyone else gives us a nod. And it was able to talk to Adam simberg who's one of the Blue Jays relievers. And yeah, he told me that at one point, or maybe twice, the bullpen, the relievers actually used the bullpen phone to call the dugout and say, pass this message on to Matt Chapman. He's dead to us, 'cause again, Chapman kept saying he would signal to them and he just kept forgetting and kept forgetting. And he honestly said to us in the media, he said, I'm running the bases and I gotta remember to touch all the bases and I just forget. So finally in Chapman hit a home run and he finally signals to the bullpen and they got really excited. Well, I never acknowledge them when I hit a home run. I forget to look at them so I finally looked at them today and then I called them and they were pretty pumped up. They were pretty pumped up. So were the fans. It's so funny when you cover baseball. You kind of know a team's a team, but then there's sort of segments within a team. There's the position players. And then even within the position players as the outfielders, the infielders, you have the starting rotation, they're kind of on their own somewhat. And then you have the relievers that are just a bunch on their own as well. And so it was funny because Matt Chapman even said, him and the bullpen, they've got a good thing going right now. They've got a good banter going right now. So they're having a lot of fun with it. And I think it just kind of also highlights that things are going good for the Blue Jays. They know they're playing their best baseball and they just kind of want to ride this positive

"Abomination. Now dusty is trying to win a game. And by the way, we were all focused on Clayton Kershaw in front of the home Fox home folks and what we should and what Mookie betts did. Dusty baker is one of the all time great Los Angeles Dodgers. And here he is is the manager in an All-Star Game in Dodger Stadium where he used to bat in the same lineup as garvey and Lopes. That's a great career. It should be in the Hall of Fame, probably. Dusty baker is one of the if I'm not mistaken on deck. Hank, Aaron. Home run 7 15. On deck. But dusty is employing a shift in an All-Star Game. And I don't want to game that doesn't matter. I mean, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. And I know baseball might not like seeing it doesn't matter. It does matter because we want to see action. We want to see that's baseball in a nutshell. We want to see action. Please, I mean, if all games in which you shouldn't, you shouldn't be allowed to shift. It's the All-Star Game. Good God. What are we doing? So the showcase in my mind was lacking. Stadium looked great. It finally cooled off. It was a beautiful Southern California night. Clayton Kershaw, great to see him. Great to see some of these young stars of the game. But baseball these days is shift and have guys come out of the pen after the starter doesn't go but 5 and then come in and throw a hundred miles an hour. I mean, clay Holmes, the Yankees are throwing like a 97 mile an hour sinker. I was listening to some of the game on ESPN ready to love Doug glanville by the way. He's terrific. He said Holmes is like throwing he's throwing anchors up there. Like he's throwing an actual boat anchor up there. It's sinking and you can't hit it. You can't move it. So, I guess pitch clock and shift and let's get this thing moving. Let's get some action. Let's roll. Because that is baseball in a nutshell in 2022. Is there a big hitters? You'll see home runs. What do you saw three last night, right? Yep. And Stanton, there was even a still shot of the baseball right on the bat. The baseball looked like it was a sponge. Yeah. I mean, the exit velocity is impressive. The ball goes far and it's great to see and Stanton Southern California kid home ringing a home. Game essentially from for him being a cool story. And he gets the MVP. I love it. Cool story. Love it. Mike back there. I know Mike, I know he's referred to old school people around here, certainly from Notre-Dame high school here in Southern California refer to him as Mike Stanton. And I remember I remember hearing that out here first time when I moved out here and I'm like, Mike Stanton, the guy who, along with Jeff Nelson, was the guy that Tory brought out of the pen in 96. To lead to Rivera to lead to wetland at Mike Stanton? No, no. Differently. He made the right name change there. Don't you think? Yeah. Well, I don't know what, I don't know what Sterling's home run call for Mike Stanton would be. Certainly, what are you doing right now? You know, I don't want to come on and rain on any parade. I know, but I don't know what to fix is, obviously, we've been talking about it forever. It's like a great, you know. I've told you at least. Let's do two things. Speed it up with the pitchers. Speed it up. Let's go. Action, but that's number two. Number one is that shift. Get it out. Get it out of the game, get it out of the game. I'm disagreeing with you on this. I know you disagree with me. Until this week last week to be honest with you. I saw the Met's employer and I kind of really fully seriously just watching them. And that was like, if you're a hitter, then hit it whether or not. They're moving their players around to try to give them the advantage to catch the ball. I don't know why that's such a big, it's like the 5. It's like the 5 yard rule in football. You got to allow the offense to do something. You got to. They had to change the rules in football because of bigger, stronger, faster, defenders. You know, they had to do it. They have to open up the middle. You have to allow some form of offense. You got to do it. At some point, you know, when push comes to shove and we as baseball fans see a ball lashed into right center field and as the shot of the pitcher that you see of the home plate from center field and the ball leaves the camera at a certain angle, you're attuned to think that's a base hit, then you turn around and there's a third baseman standing in short right field. You know, honestly, and I understand the job is to hit him when they're not, and then make sure you get the other guy out. But at some point, you do need to see somebody stand on first. And then last night's game, the best hitters baseball can put up there from the national league got one hit after the first inning. And after a while, it's great to hear Nestor Cortez work his catcher and listen in on that. And it's great to hear what Alec manoa of the Blue Jays go, boom, that's one. That's fun. That's great. But when it's boom, there's 23 in a row. Not great. That's where I'm standing on the shift.

"See all of the things that you've laid out in front of us? He doesn't like it very much because he wants to be that throwback. And it was interesting. Back before the 2020 season in spring training, he was with his travel ball coach who wanted to introduce him to a friend. And that friend was Dave Stewart, the great Oakland a's ace of the late 80s and early 90s. And Dave Stewart was known for a lot of things, a bulldog stare from the mound and wanting to intimidate the hitter at the plate, but more than anything, Dave Stewart was known for logging innings. And there was a particular four year stretch in which Dave Stewart won 20 games for all four seasons through 1061 and two third innings, completed 41 games, it's what the starting pitcher used to be. And that guy simply doesn't exist anymore. And yet when I talked with Dave seward about this conversation with Alec manoa and about his career, he said, quote, what I took away from completing a game, it meant I outsmarted guys 27 times. I outsmarted their ass just enough that I could finish this game. I was one step ahead of you every at bat brother. For me, it was all about one more inning. One more inning, one more inning. And that's not an approach that pictures take these days. It's not an approach that they take because it's not an approach that teams have emphasized with them. And the emphasis of pitching deep into games is where baseball needs to go. It needs to go there not because we're sitting here railing on efficiency on optimization. No, those are good things to win ball games. It needs to go that way, Pablo, for the betterment of the sport. And so as Alec manoa wants to be the guy, wants to be the throwback character who will only give up the baseball when you pry it out of his cold dead hands, Jeff. It does feel like we stand here at this pretty unique inflection point. Like dare I say like a seminal moment in the history of baseball, where there is a choice. Continue to optimize versus reform. And how does that choice get made, do you think, as we look ahead here? It may be a very simple calculus problem. Next year, the pitch clock is coming two Major League Baseball. It has shaved 20 plus minutes per game off of minor league games this season. It works. Like it's really good and you are going to see a much different brand of baseball in 2023 between the pitch clock and the ban on shifts at rob Manfred is expected to implement. And in the eyes of owners, that may be the fix that baseball needs. But I think it would be a half measure. And as my government taught us in Breaking Bad, half measures don't work. You got to go full bore on this in the combination of a pitch clock, a ban on shifts, and a re emphasis of the starting pitcher would take baseball to a place that marries all of the wonders of modern baseball, the incredible athleticism and the amazing skill with this game that in the past captured so much of the nation's heart before it turned into this over optimized boring slog of three plus hours that we far too often see. "And I think especially we talked about Alan Gonzalez about this yesterday, the changes the man he has made in how he plays and how he repairs. You know, when he was a young player with the Orioles, I heard that, you know, teammates would nudge him and hey, this is what we have to do and conversation about the consistency of effort. And now you hear stories about how all NES, which is great because as you know, people evolved during their lifetime. And it feels like that he absolutely has done that. The last couple of weeks you've been begging to talk about, one of the best players on one of baseball's most disappointing teams. What do you got? There is a unicorn. I'm describing him as a unicorn in our midst. And his name is Julio Rodriguez, who I am convinced is on the fast track to superstardom. Let's play the pace game again. He leads the major leagues with 17 steals. And he's doing that with a batting line, 20% better than the league average. So let's play that help us through over a full season. I went back to 1980 to find rookies that led the league in steels and generated an OPS plus of one 20 or higher. Here's the last way to do it. Tim raines did it in 1981, each row did it in 2001, and Mike Trout did it in 2012. That's the list. Sure, the Mariners are a wildly disappointing bunch, but you can't blame this kid. Obviously Jared killman was sort of the and Kyle Lewis to a degree these you guys were supposed to form that student sort of super outfield. Rodriguez is the only one sort of keeping up his end of the bargain. But that blend of skill that he have is exceedingly rare and I am thus exceedingly confident that if you look at all the young players across baseball this season sort of taking off, I think he might have the most promising, maybe the best profile of all of them to have sort of a superstar filled 20s given that age and his ability to hit. Yeah, what we've seen with the Blue Jays and the Mariners remind us that you can be a superstar prospect that that doesn't guarantee anything for years. We heard about Nate Pearson. Nate Pearson's this, you know, Nate Pearson's had an 8 pairs and throws really hard. And I remember talking with Dan schulman before the debut of Alec minoan, what he told me was this guy really knows how to pitch. And this guy is presence. And it turned out Alec manoa is the better of the two and you mentioned Jared kelman. I mean, it just hasn't happened so far. And maybe it will that can turn around, but it turns out that the better player might be mister Rodriguez. All right, sir, thanks for doing this embo. Later, man. That's the Mendoza's analyst.

"And he might be joining their line up very soon. And the Dodgers, there's a weariness about that team, Tim. And I saw it, I got to say, you know, in those years that I covered the Yankees, I saw that, you know, year after year after year with the high expectations on the team, pushing that rock back up the hill every year, I think, began to wear on the players. And then you have literal wearing on the players. Walker buehler going down with an injury the other day, a former forearm issue, they've made it clear. He's not going to be back for a long time, Justin Turner getting older, some of the other guys are struggling in the lineup. Dave Roberts talking on Monday about, hey, we need to start doing some things better. We need to start playing better baseball. Yeah, buster. I did their game Friday night and Saturday in San Francisco and granted they ran into a really good giants bullpen on Saturday, but they left 14 guys on base. And the bases loaded four times in that game. It just couldn't get people home. And as far as the weariness goes buster, look, I'm with you. I think the Dodgers will be a really, really good team in October comes. And they'll be playing in October. That's obvious. However, I was told that Julio urias is a little sore and a little tired from last year, buster. He pitched twice more than twice as many innings last year as any other season in his career. And even those numbers are good, he's given up 12 home runs and he's a little tired, I'm told. I was told the same thing about walker buehler that he's just not the same picture and that was before he got hurt. And he's going to miss two months buster. Maybe longer than that. If he's not picking up a ball for 6 to 8 weeks, he's going to be out for a long time. And he granted they have Tony Gonzalez and they are pitching in the minor leagues, but you know the Padres are really good right now. And the Giants, despite not being as good, they're a pain in the neck too. And I think the Dodgers have their hands full, but Dave Roberts is right. They have to play better as great as their offense is. They are a spotty offensive team here and there where you can pitch to that team, which I didn't think a lot of people thought you could. And you really feel like bob Melvin's made a huge difference with the Padres, yes? Yes, I was told, you know, last year, you know, somebody's got to come in and clean up some things here. And bob Melvin's really good at that. He goes right in and sees what's wrong. And he fixes it. But look at their team right now with the way they have pitched Joe musgrove and others. The way Jay cronin worth has played. And of course, Manny Machado. That's a very good team right now and in theory went to T gets back. It could get much better. I'm really curious about Tati's junior coming back and how exactly that all plays out. Especially the question of whether or not he plays shortstop or center field. What do you think? Well, I think he's going to play shortstop, but it'll be interesting to see what happens because he's been the star of the team since the minute he got there, even though Manny Machado has been a better player at times and all that, but he was the marquee guy. But remember buster, they had the best record in baseball after 50 games and then finished under 500 last year with tatis in the middle of all that. Now he's going to come back whenever it is, maybe to a first place team. Maybe he's going to look around and say, you know, my teammates are really, really good. Maybe I should follow the lead of them this time instead of maybe the other way around. I would play him at shortstop, but I think he's so athletic. He could play center field, stay healthier, but I think his best shot is at shortstop. Yeah, and I think my question to it shortstop is I agree with you. He'll come back and he'll be the shortstop. But I do think that the standards for performance and expectation have been raised there. So if he were to come back and make a bunch of errors early, I'd be curious to see what the reaction would be from bob Melvin. Yeah, I mean, I've had people in the organization tell me he's a center Fielder long term. That was last year. I was surprised to hear it that early, but you're right, bob Melvin has tightened things up there in every way. And one of them is the defense and to teach junior is a spectacular defensive player and yet every once in a while will kick ground ball, that is going to be unacceptable this time. So I'm going to ask you in a bit about the Tony La Russa situation about the Arizona ship. But before that, I want to ask you about some of the major awards that are up for grabs. American League cyan award is to me potentially a fascinating race because it might involve two teammates. Kevin gausman and Alec manoa the Toronto Blue Jays. Right now Tim, if you look at fan grass version of pitching war, Kevin gossman is far and away the FrontRunner, three war to this point, manoa at 1.9, Tim, I looked at it this morning, when I was ERA, is nearly a run better than Kevin gausman, it's clear that Gauss men's incredibly low home run rate is the reason why he's got that three war. I think right now, manoa might win that award. What about you? Yeah, I would vote for him. By the way, war buster is confusing to me still, because there are other sites that have a different war for each player. To me, if war is going to work, then it has to be the exact same formula as everyone else's. So it's confusing. But having said that, I would take manola. He's 8 in one, and I sorry, I still pay attention to wins and losses. He leads the league in ERA, 75 innings. He's done it for a very good team. I find three, four guys that you could put in this conversation, but I would take the big right hander for the Blue Jays. And I want to talk a little bit about manoa because I just love to watch him pitch. He's such an unusual starting pitcher. I think he's the closest thing that I've seen to a position player as a starting pitcher that I've seen in the time I've covered baseball. And this is what I mean by that. There's like a separation in clubhouses between the position players and the starting pitchers. Usually they have the starting pitchers, relief pitchers on one side of the Clubhouse, they have the position players on the other. Pitchers are kind of on their own thing, right? They have their own regimen. They have their own workout routine. They're kind of off doing their own thing. Even during the course of games that they pitch, they'll come back into the dugout, they're in one corner, and they're not to be talked to. No one's allowed to go in their area. Everyone leaves them alone because they're on their starting pitcher day. The day that they're.

"And then a teammate of course dumped water on him. This almost feels Ted Lasso esque in its wholesomeness Caitlin so do these guys actually like each other this much? Is this all real? It is real. And I have to confess, I don't watch the show, Ted Lasso, but I think I'm sorry. I have not, that's the one show that is missing from my repertoire. But of course, to answer your question, they do all like each other. This is a fun team, what you see on the field with them all hugging and high fiving each other and dancing in the dugout like that is what you see them doing the Clubhouse and that is who they are. They've always been a pretty fun team. Like I said, Vlad can be kind of at the center of that because he just loves to have a good time. He loves the sport of baseball. He loves the fact that his career is to be a baseball player. He just lives life every day to enjoy it and to win. But yes, this team gets so long. They are team that has come up together. A lot of them were prospects together in the minor leagues and this team has kind of gone through that slow methodic rebuild. They've gone through the hard times of being a team that loses a lot of games and they're coming out on the other side of that. And even some of the new guys like Kevin gausman were saying, one of the reasons why they chose the Blue Jays, obviously the money was there, but they just liked the Clubhouse atmosphere. And so, you know, what you see in the clips in the footage we get from the dugout and the most smiling and laughing, that is who this team is. So taking everything into account, the additions, the losses, the talent, the camaraderie, the rest of the AL east, how dangerous can this team be in 2022? I mean, I think that most projections like them to be one of the better teams, if not the best team in the American League east, I think they probably look like even one of the strongest teams in the American League in general. Like we said, they are coming off a 91 win season and I don't see any reason why they can't reach that mark once again and certainly they hope to surpass it. And I was talking to Alec manoa a few weeks ago when I was down in Janine and he was saying his goal as a starter is to be on the mound for 20 wins. So as long as he starts and the team comes out and wins 20 of those games, he's going to be happy and he said to me and every start on our rotation has that same goal. And if you do the math, that means that we want to be a hundred win team. And so that's kind of the Mark they've set them for themselves and Vlad said as well that they want to get to a hundred wins. Even if they fall short of a hundred wins, I mean, you're still talking about a team that probably getting into the playoffs. Obviously I don't want to say it is because we know what happened last year. They got to 91 wins when they didn't make it, but there's a lot of belief. There's a lot of motivation in this club. And I think they will be dangerous. So what you're saying is that the movie should actually be called the century club. No, that's a good one. Coming up, how will Canada's vaccine rules affect the J's and opposing teams? And the countdown is on to a rare packed house on Toronto's home field. Okay, Caitlin, we're going to change gears a little bit here and look at another significant piece in this Toronto puzzle. So New York has made headlines by lifting its vaccine mandate. The city of New York lifting its vaccine mandates in the private sector that had been in place for performance in athletes in local venues, the reversal will allow unvaccinated New York Yankees and New York mets players to play in home games. But Toronto and Canada are not. Can you remind us of the latest in Toronto and what it means for unvaccinated players? Yeah, so essentially unvaccinated travelers can't enter Canada without having to go through a mandatory quarantine period. It's usually 14 days and so that would be sort of long enough that it suggests that a baseball player could not come here for a three game series. And this has been an effect since January, the NBA and the NHL have been following these rules. It's a little different because last year when the Blue Jays returned to Toronto, the federal government gave the Blue Jays and Major League Baseball a national interest exemption, which meant that unvaccinated athletes could come into the country and they wouldn't be subject to that quarantine. They just had to follow sort of strict rules while they were here. But that was lifted in January of this year. And so that's why we're back to you have to be vaccinated if you're an athlete coming in to Toronto.

"But that's exactly what it is. Blue jays are in control of their own perspective. And to that point. I wanted to talk. We talk about the offense. How insanely critical. Has this pitching ben. We've only had really. I think in the last month one rock rocky start and i can think of the jose barea start. The one is his last rough start and who started the other day that they got always at matt's they got in the whole. It was the bullpen. That did that. To your call reuse. How rough two. Yeah is not been out because to that point but right now if you guys are slot in this rotation up where we're trying to get in line for the rest of the season. It's kind of crazy that you're almost saying hinged ryu is our three or four guy right now with everybody else up. I know it's weird. I would still be tanny. Emma with robbie ray near the top of that. Because you're really putting a lot on the shoulders of alec manoa and jose burritos to that point. But i don't know maybe that's another tangent we can go off of here but my point was the pitching in the bullpen has been critical lately to the blue jays success and they have been hitting on all cylinders as well. They've been obviously getting you know vibe by the crazy out loud offense but is what it is but to that point. I wanted to make sure that we called out the fact that the blue jays pitching has been just as good as the offense over the last few weeks. Here and honestly. I've been very impressed. With jose burritos and that frame as one other than wrapped raping syon. Yeah burritos has been. I mean ever. Since i forget what started it was. But he's made some serious adjustments on. "Robbie freaking ray comes out and shove today with just the expected amount of strikeouts thirteen strikeouts walks only one run around run allowed on a solo shot to mike sannino. So taking all together is a very good outing for bluejays. Starting pitching this series and they kind of held down an offense in the region so it's one of the best in baseball. They're known for being a pitching first team but this year they've really stepped up offensively and they have the last few years that they've had success going into the postseason and you saw the blue jays do their best against one of the best teams in baseball. And that's exactly what you want. We were always putting asterix next to the performance of the last couple of series. You know you get the baltimore orioles and everyone knows who they are. You get the yankees. And they're struggling. You get the oakland athletics. And they're also struggling. The bottom is kinda fallen out for them but the rays were a hot team in. Yeah maybe last. they've lost. I think five of their last seven games so not as hot as it could be but bottom line. The blue jays beat good team with phenomenal. Starting pitching which was incredible to watch -absolutely. And you know what in may i think we could all agree that pitching primarily the bullpen. But even starting pitching was it was a disaster and it was probably one of the weaknesses of the team. But i'm willing to say that the rotation bluejays have right. Now is probably one of the best that i've seen in the last five plus years. And when you when you look at it you have an all star burritos in on all star in review your robbie ray who easily win the cy young alec manoa who's inconsideration. I think for rookie of the year and stephen matt's who's sub to think since post all-star break and look what they did against the tampa bay rays only five runs allowed all series bluejays. You look at that and you think that's an easy sweep. Unfortunately two of those runs came when they were shut out and the blue jays weren't really able to get any offense going in that second game but pitching was absolutely fantastic. And i mean minoa ten strikeouts. You mentioned that he. I think he was actually perfect. Going into the fourth or the fifth when he allowed that base runner jose burritos even though he did suffer some abdominal tightness or some some strain there. He has not as of right now. Gone for any imaging which is a good sign. Perhaps it's just a. He didn't feel too good he. Steve sits the rest of the game. Spends the night re recovering. Hopefully able to make that second start or that next star even for him. Four strikeouts only allowed a home run which unfortunately that loss was charged to him but he still was absolutely fantastic and two runs over seven innings or or one run over seven innings to brioche and then one was charged a meza to runs over a full game that with an offense that the blue jays have. That's an easy win. I think and they didn't win..

Maybe this is why kevin durant wanted to get out of there though. He's not impressed by westbrook. Jc your leaders the give them to you and just because it can jump high and play basketball not neri not not no. We don't won't be walking around. The goddamn streets would address on as heterosexual. The mother gar. And he's so calm casual what he does. He's just giving his takes on life. God be the one thing he is correct about. Is this russell. Westbrook has been pushing the boundaries with his attire for many many years so wearing the dress and the mother bleep and boots. He's not really something new. He says address. Whatever he doesn't care what your sexual preferences this just basically looks weird is what he says. Now go cousin gate. I'll give gate girl. Female causes male causes. It don't matter about that but when you say you're a heterosexual male and that's what you do you and that's my opinion. A very progressive take kwami. Sounds like we're going backwards a little bit trying to move forward quantity brand you. The bleeping boots man in summary. I'll just give you one more. So i played this last one. I mean that's the best way. I can put it in summary here. This is the last part. i believe. There's one that worries me though because of the way. He pronounces a certain word. I don't think this at though is planning nita's just not talking. That weird round is weird is kind of what be from. He'll books in a miniskirt man doesn't like the address the best clip. I'm not playing because he pronounces a certain. I know what he's saying. Yeah but he says it like it's straight curse word and if i- bleeped out it makes no sense. Okay so i'm not gonna play the other one but Yeah he's not. A big fan has apparently not. Did russell westbrook respond to this time. I don't know i saw this on twitter. I is this really him. And for sean is now. He's been doing a couple of these video. So what what what. Precipitated us what what made him do this. I guess he was just bothered by the russell westbrook photos and the video. I don't know if you went to the met gala. I don't know what he was doing. But i saw it. He's in a white dress and he's in like very odd looking boots. I don't know how else to say. It was it the macos that were was wearing tax. The rich that yet Dress right exactly. I don't know go out to a really fancy party afterwards. And peter luger's and wearing a shirt that says eat vegan but anyway so i don't know i think that was the impetus as you say for it. Yeah and kwami brown. I think there was what made him go to the internet. And get this fame now for ripping everybody. I believe it started with that. Podcast that matt. Barnes and stephen jackson did with somebody and they told a kwami brown story where they were all laughing about him because of course she had a number one overall miserable career and became the butterball jokes and everything else and he responded like that to what they were saying and then everybody thought was funny and and now he's continued to take on old and there you go goes after his former players. Yeah no doubt from pineapple express studios brown. He tells it like it. Is i think him on a plane as and it wasn't a great career number one overall pick. He played.

"Thirteen heads and only four runs allowed over those nineteen innings. In like i did like the red sox this past weekend when i said friday take that minus one and minus two had two and a half and team total. I'm gonna do that again with the astros. Because they're i think they're bathtub. Woken up here. A little bit In this weekend series against the mariners. So i will be just for grading purposes minus one and a half run line for the astros tomorrow against the royals but i will be also taken that minus two and a half alternative line eight. The astros team total for my dog. I'm gonna go again tomorrow monday. White socks versus blue jays. Money line. I think this is one of your guys at We've been talking about pretty much in the second half of the season it's lance land versus out manoa I didn't is a good spot for the blue jays right. I know that that think they lost today against the tires. Extras by minoa is three zero at home. With one point nine one. Era he has one start against the white sox's season you went five innings. Gave up four hits one earned. Run on the flip side you have lance lane. I mean he has great. He's a great pitcher the season White sox have that great pitching staff. The numbers are all great but just kind of liked despite the for the blue jays at home after the white sox are coming off a huge series against a raise they have to travel from tampa bay up to toronto while the blue jays are at home in that series against the tigers so they can stay at home I like the blue jays to kind of take this one from the white sox on monday tomorrow. So just a recap. I will take the astros run line minus one and a half tomorrow. Royals pitcher will be. Dano lynch in the astros will have zac. Grinky on the mound. also look. If you're feeling frisky take that minus two. And a half in the also the astros team total over and then for my dog will also be a monday night. White socks versus blue jays jay's money line lance land versus alec manoa to get our we started i did have a bonus bake I was looking at this to take my as my dog. And i just didn't know where the numbers we're gonna come out for this because both of these pictures are just so bad in. This was a take a look at taking the over in the marlins and the nationals game on tuesday night eric Eric feddie versus. Hey zeus lazardo. And this was something crazy that i've found over the last seven starts. The total average runs scored for Hazaras lazaro starts have been at fourteen runs per game. We know feddie is bad. Also expecting this number to come around nine possibly nine and a half with these bad pictures by when you have one pitcher that is just so bad in those games. Averaging close to fourteen runs over a pretty good sample size seven starts with a good sample size I will probably playing that over on that In that game on tuesday night so little bomas pick. They're also the bowl of those new now. Fem was online your rights. They will be avenged They're not going to be short. Price is actually. The royalists have been going really well lately i they wouldn't i mean yeah getting tonight won't lou was unique games. Kkob's on alad manure it wa- i liked about pick up. It's the fate in the from the tampa bay. See chocolate dedicate. Things wouldn't often when everyone's jada if you just look at numbers situationally that's a great pick facil- yeah good with those. I'm my dog is going to be both on tuesday. My dog women stolen. i'm swimming. Start with my dog..

"Yeah i don't know that point You mentioned how takes usually for players to come up through the blue jays minor league system and eventually become actual blue jays alec. Manila is one of the ones in the most recent history to make it that quickly to the majors. Even shut you know was cutlass. Three years basically the minor league system alec manoa was twenty nineteen correct. Yes so crate. Kirk was also because i actually saw kirk back in bluefields. I hadn't been three years ago. Four years you get drafted twenty eight. Whatever year. we picked up her. Denial international in two thousand sixteen right. There he goes or years or so. But that's the average if you're a good player and you can find a level the stand out at usually that four or five year. Ballpark is a normal development cycle. Right unless you're playing an organization where you're you know perennial last place you know like the reason we're seeing the guys are playing on the orioles. Right now is they. Just don't have that depth on the top minor league system and we're getting to start to see guys like cedric mullins and whatnot come out in those organizations but that being said the bluejays obviously or log jammed and we've already talked about this extensively and i guess adam more points to you as far as segues go because you know we're gonna go right to watch friend was ready to dive on a minute ago. So the blue jays have had these you know. They built up the farm system. We have this. You know endless seeming play of a middle infielders of our system. What do we do with all this kind of stuff. Bluejays are on. That cost right now where they are actually technically in better standing when they were in the two thousand fifteen season because they're actually about five hundred. This isn't a complete sell the farm situation to the point where you're gonna deplete the hall farm system but there is something there if you make the right moves this team right now gets much better and actually could make the giant playoff push that we need them to do. We've seen chinks in the armor for the yankees. Red sox have been holding on is still playing great baseball but we still don't know if that's going to continue with the injuries i really feel like they're hinging there a lot on the fact that they can land chris sale healthy and run really well here at the end of july and august. But that's what we're they're hoping on. The rays are being the raise. I don't know how they're still doing it. Sued and they're hoping to get wandered franko but fill out and doing what he does. We got some trade offers that the blue jays have been a quote unquote checking out. And let's start off with a weird one that i that caught me really would surprise. Nelson cruz has been in the blue jays. Meyer or you know twitter verse talking in articles and whatnot. I i don't understand this move. Adam i can see you chomping at the bit to hop on this one. So i'm gonna let you just you know dive on this whole thing. I love nelson cruz. But does he fit this team. No but that's the on twitter people refusing to trade trent thornton for long..

"Just it's time to put up. Dude you have you have santa. And what is the measuring. stick now. Yup half the either match or exceed it to keep a guy like vladimir guerrero junior on your team and its well earned at that point. Because he's the future and if this is just a taste of this just an appetizer springer years and ball per year just for the next five years after this. Just let it run for blew up for days fans. We should be getting used to the fact that we should be starting to eventually in the next year. I think having that same conversation that best bluejays first baseman. He's going in that conversation with delgado mcgriff and now it should feel going forward because your a c. The com- you know was the calm for the storm. Now you're seeing him be more or less right now. The only guy that was beating him in most offensive categories was mike trout. Guess what happened mike. Trout's not lane baseball for a week and here comes the vladi train. I think the only guy doing better him in most categories in the majors is the guy who had just mentioned the financially is been cashed in in fernando tatty. Because i'm sorry to say this is the thing that shocks me about two ts. I have on my fantasy team. And he's played only two-thirds as many games as major league baseball players that he's still leading in all these offensive categories thing with with a kunia to he. He's budget hit a home run their up. One yep extendable yes. Oh blast extension. He heard us talking. Glad up too much and he got on the conversation. I need some thunder back. Jj left-center to all right We touched on them earlier. I'd be remiss if we didn't bring them up again. We gotta talk about steven mass man because that outing against the the yankees two days ago we're again. we're recording. this on thursday. So on tuesday was just outstanding He needed a bounceback. His last outing before that against boston. Let the lot to be desired. Trust me. I know and that game. He pitched six innings. Giving up five runs all earned only fanning walking to also giving up a home run fast forward five days later again to tuesday at yankee stadium arguably his best outing of the year since kansas city. Okay so it's been quite some time since he's had an outing like this and prior to this his hasn't been that good all right. So if you were to walk in and see the stats against the yankees. Prior to this game you would think oh man they're going to clobber nope he had arguably his best outing in a toronto blue jays uniform pictures gave up one earned run striking out ten and walking zero brennan. How important is the success for stephen. Matt's moving forward with this rotation we talked about people like alec manoa. And how maybe thomas hash has a shot in the in the rotation if something were to open up steve again. Maybe it's going to be up down performances. We'll see but if it's somewhere in the middle on average from here to the end of the season how important is that for the stability of the rotation huge can't be understated. It's it's massive. He like he did his first. Three starts of the season. Going out there pumping the strike zone keeping the ball low in the zone..

"They can't risk the future of alec manoa putting him up into the major leagues too early. Even if say maybe the team would benefit from just getting those innings out of them. I still think that the plan is getting working through everything that he needs to before at at minimum next season i'm still saying zero percents see if in aaa i i just have a hard time giving him zero percent because he's so close to one level away from the job however i still think it's unlikely but if i give it a percentage i'd probably say thirty or thirty five percent. I don't think it's possible. I think it's possible a lot of stuff have to happen mark. I agree with you but if injuries pile up and you know for example. I know this is crazy based on the amount of injuries. They've had but if this somehow lingers in the jays are desperate or in need of our desperate need of arms or anything like that maybe the bullpen burns out and they need options. You have to consider you have to end. This is talking about later on in the season because of course you want to see him pitch games in aaa before. You even consider it so right now. Like i mentioned are using a five man rotation you have nick al-bir alligator i think that's how you pronounce correctly. Alec minoa tj. Zoe who we've seen this year. A few times and jacob wagon so those that's the five man rotation open up for the bisons but alec manoa you gotta give starts or a few starts before you even consider it but i'm a little bit surprised because i thought some like for example swimming woods. Richardson starting aa for new hampshire. And i thought for sure those two would both be in aa. I guess we were all wrong. But i guess that just proves the spring that alec manila had jays really liked what they saw. And you have to consider this in excel ration- of if is developing east skipping all those levels and starting right off aaa i know. He was the first round draft pick from last year or a couple of years beforehand. But i guess the jays really like what they've seen. And i'm all for it. I trust the development plan of how ross atkins power have done. Things based on their track records went back to cleveland and so far in toronto with for example. Bogus guerrero bijou. All these guys look how they've developed improperly developed. I'm all for whatever they decide because of how it's turned out but if he's in aaa you have to give it a percentage that he will be up here at some point..

thirty Alec minoa zero percent alec manoa toronto cleveland alec manila last year thirty five percent two Zoe first round Richardson both new hampshire zero nick al-bir alligator five man this year one level
