"Schulman, play by play man on ESPN radio this fall, you hear him on the playoffs, you'll hear him on the World Series and of course you see him on Toronto Blue Jays broadcast play by play man and he was at the game last night, a great game Dan, Yankees, Blue Jays, going down to the bottom of the tenth inning stars involved, managerial decisions, everyone watching Aaron judge. It felt like a playoff game, buster. It really, really did. I mean, the Yankees had a magic number of one to clinch the division, the Blue Jays are trying to clinch a playoff spot. Aaron judge had 60 homers. It was a big lively crowd, and then all of the strategy in the tenth inning as you talked about and intentional walk on one side, no intention to walk on the other side. And Vladimir Guerrero junior coming up with the big hit in a game that the Blue Jays really needed. They would dearly love to be home for the first round of the playoffs and a win last night's another step in that direction. I'm going to ask you about Aaron judge, but first about the Blue Jays, it feels like in a year in which there have been so many inconsistencies where you're trying to figure out what's the bedrock of this team. Like they're kind of coming together as we get down the stretch here. Yeah, I think that's fair. They've never really had a stretch buster where offense and pitching have clicked at the same time for more than a few days. You know, there have been times where the offense has been great and they look like last year. And then there have been times where the offense cooled off a little bit. And the bullpen carried them, or then the starting pitching carried them for a while. But it does feel like they're closer to everything coming together now than they have before. They're a very good team. And I think they're a very dangerous team. Should they get into the playoffs, which looks like it'll be a formality. They're without a couple of players. Lourdes guriel junior, Santiago espinal. They're on the IL, but their depth has come through. You know, Whit merrifield has had some big games for them. Danny Jansen has had some big games for them. And I think they feel good about things. If they can get and maybe last night's game winning hit is something. If they can get vladi really going, you know, like he did last year. That's a game changer for them. That gives them an Aaron judge type bat in their lineup. And I think they feel very good with Alec mino and Kevin gausman up at the top of the rotation. Yeah, and I feel like that the way their path is beginning to take shape in the postseason. They're going to host a first round in Toronto. It looks like which would be awesome. We know how great the crowds are there. And then the second round, if you catch the Houston Astros, why view is the prohibitive favorites in the American League because of how good their pitching is. I want to catch them in a best of 5. Yeah. So it's interesting. The Blue Jays have lost the tiebreaker to both Seattle and Tampa Bay. So they've got to finish ahead of them in order to finish ahead of them. If you know what I mean. So I think there are two and a half up on the rage three up on the Mariners. So driving home last night do with the math, like I'm sure you would if you were in my situation if the Blue Jays go four and four. The rest of the way, Seattle has to go 8 and two, Tampa Bay has to go 7 and two. I think my math is right on that. It's not impossible. It looks like the Blue Jays will host, but it's not impossible. But the other thing is, say they get down to the last day of the season and there were game up. Do they throw Alec mino in that game to get home field? That has been a big conversation piece here because John Schneider has said a lot of different things are under consideration for that last day. So if you're a Blue Jays fan, you want them two games clear of Tampa Bay in Seattle heading into the last day of the season just so there's no temptation to use Alec manoa. Obviously for them to have a chance to win a play. Their best chance to win a playoff series is to have Alec Manila stark game one of that series. So the funny thing about the Blue Jays in Houston too. And I don't love this. They played all 6 of their games against each other in April on back to back weekends. They have not seen each other for 5 months. But, you know, again, the Blue Jays are one of these teams. They could go to and out, and they could get hot and they could roll people. Like they've got that much talent. So, but I'm hoping it's at home. 45,000 people at roger center sounds like fun to me. All right, one of the big talking points in a once we get into these rounds of the postseason will be about the right handed nature of the Toronto lineup and if they face Houston, that potentially be an issue Toronto's excuse me, Houston's loaded with right handed starters. How do you see the Blue Jays adjusting to that? I remember at the time that the trade deadline we talked about how did that point and I'm sure this held the Blue Jays probably had seen the most number of matchups that were deemed unfavorable without the platoon advantage, yes. Exactly. By a mile by a mile, it's not even close. I think they kind of are who they are to be honest with you. Now there are certain times rymel choppy is in the lineup. There are certain times cabin visio is in the lineup. But if Lourdes guriel junior gets hot and if Whit merrifield stays hot, you could have an all right hand hitting lineup in playoff games. You really could, you could have Alejandro Kurt DH and Danny Jansen catching in some games. You know, the other thing with Houston, you're going to see and we're getting ahead of ourselves here, but you would see a from birth all day, right?

"Into the numbers. This is himbo nose on baseball tonight. He's a researcher at ESPN. He has also, he tells us a honcho on the show. Get up. Hand behind how you doing today? Buster, I am outstanding. It's been a boring couple days here without being able to watch much baseball getting energized for the second half of the season. But I actually did enjoy the Derby in the All-Star Game to a large degree this year. I know the ratings were a little bit down and in both cases. But look, I still really enjoy those events, but we covered them really, really well. And really like the access that we were sort of provided by so many of the players. I think getting Alec Manila on the mic was a really cool thing that Fox did. I enjoyed the festivities. Maybe that makes me a romanticist. I don't know. But I thought it was a great week for baseball. Yeah, and I think the context for the two ratings you referenced were different. And we're going to get in that in a second. But first I want to start with this. Because I feel like this is absolutely been buried amid the all star week festivities. The New York mets announced that Jacob de Grom, who has been sidelined since spring training had a simulated game pushback because he's got some shoulder soreness and the mets are saying that's out of an abundance of caution. I think we're at the point with the Grom hambo. I feel like where there's no such thing as a minor issue. It's been more than a year since he pitched in a major league game even before that he went on the IL last year. He'd had a number of injuries. I take everything very seriously. That's do I. There is no minor injury when it comes to Jacob de Grom based upon his track record. I

"Tyler folger and Anita marks here on a Wednesday from the edition of the DW podcast in the dog days of summer. It's going to be mostly baseball and we will touch on the diamond as well, but we do have a PGA Tour event that will tee off tomorrow the John Deere classic. So Anita and I being the avid golfers we are. We'll throw some picks and plays your way there as well. But let's start on Wednesday. There's a travel day in baseball. So a few games that will be played in the afternoon. Let's look mostly at the night slate Anita. Start with braves and Phillies. We know brave is one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. Kyle Wright and ranger Suarez are the starters here for the braves and affiliates respectively any way you're approaching this one. Yeah, I think the braves, it's batting practice for the braves against he's 6 and four with a four two three ERA. Doesn't typically last past 5 innings for the Phillies gave up 5 runs in four innings last time he faced off against the braves, gives up a lot of runs. He's very inconsistent, also on top of that as we know the Phillies have not a no bueno as I like to say on wager in regard to their bullpen four O 5 ERA. And Atlanta is just destroyed left handed pitchers this season. Second best looking percentage and so I'm going braves over four and a half runs. That's how I'm playing this matchup. I think the braves just go to town. Yeah, I'm with you. Exact same way. I'm looking at an alternate line, braves over 5 and a half rounds that plus one 40 price. There you go, braise on the run line as well with correlate with that plus one 20. Not only do the braves mash left these as you put it out with all, even without a Cooney, they got Ozuna, Contreras, Riley, Duval, darnold, sponsor and they got a lot of big bats against left handed pitching. Kyle writes a really good starter for them. He's got a 3.34 Sierra. This season 52% ground ball rate, strike it out nearly 27% of the batteries that he faces. So I think the pitching advantage and a massive lineup advantage tonight has the brave scored at least 6 runs and winning by at least two to the AL east, Blue Jays hosting the red sacks good pitching matchup between Alec Manila and Nick pavetta and he plays in this one. Yeah, I'm going Blue Jays on the run line in the first 5 manoa. I think and I'm sure you as well. Can you imagine Tyler how intimidating it must be as a batter looking down and seeing him on that rubber at 6 6 two 60, right? Intimidating and he's just he's been an absolute beast all season he averages 8 strikeouts per 9 innings pitched. His walk rate is only 5%. I actually looked into playing his under walks, but it's a little bit too much juice for me, right? Like, hey, I make a good earning, but minus one 95 is a little bit too much for you. Yeah. You know, but hey, listen, if you don't mind a minus one 95 play, man, I love the under one and a half walks. He's just been he limits hard hits, like the list goes on and on. He's just so damn good. I think he's going to help this Blue Jays team be up after the first 5. So again, I'm going Toronto Blue Jays first 5 on the run line, that's how I'm playing this again just because I think mania is just it's just an absolute beast. Yeah, I'm with you. He has been awesome this year, certainly the ace of that Toronto staff and the Cy Young conversation. It doesn't overpower with strikeouts, but like you said, limits hard contact and goes deep into games and doesn't give up runs. Under 8 and a half would be the way I'd play this, Nick pavetta. It's kind of falling back a little bit to earth, but I think with manoa kind of leading the way. I think we get a decent pitching match up here. So maybe a 5 three game, a four three game, something like that. 8 and a half, just seems a little too high given the quality of pitching on the mound. A little worried about pavetta against that blue Jay off and that seems to be waking up here a little bit, but they still haven't quite been as prolific or robust as we thought they would be this season. But bottom line, I think 8 and a half is just a scooch too high. I will play under there and hope that we see 8 runs in this game. Final one to look at, or that final one, we can dive deeper into the MLB slate. But one interesting matchup today is the rockies hosting the Dodgers and the rocks have taken the first two games of this series. They shut out the Dodgers behind Chad cool in game one and then they rough up Clayton Kershaw last night. It's Julio marias on the bump for the Dodgers who are again are a big favorite against the rockies. But again, Colorado's won each of the first two. Anything interest you in this matchup? Yeah, you know, it's really interesting. As we know the Colorado Rockies not a great team, but they have a knack beating beating up teams in their division in the national league west, right? There are 5 against the spread and straight up at home against the Dodgers. Which is really, really unbelievable. But I'm going over here. I'm going over 11 runs wouldn't be surprised that by the time the first pitch, I wouldn't, you know, even if it's at 11 and a half, I would still take the over. When these two teams go up against each other, they average ten runs when they play. And Colorado has marquise on the bump for them tonight. He's four and 5 with a 5.58 ERA, but he's even worse at home with a 6 7 O ERA. And as we know, I think the Dodgers go to town here. So, but again, Colorado has this uncanny knack of beating teams in their own division, so I'm staying away from the red line or the money line, but I do believe there's going to be a lot of batting action and runs that are going to be squirt tonight. So I'm going to go overruns in the Dodgers Colorado game..

"More moments from this year for sure. Definitely one that will remember for a while and of goes hand in hand with that eighteen to four. Winning red sox Earlier in the season in june that was also a special moment for the blue jays to scoring runs and they had seven home. Runs that day or something like that just wild stats left and right for this offense that like you mentioned jacob was up and down oftentimes and that's why there are so many turning points of this season 'cause the blue jays were up and riding high and then they kinda collapsed for a few weeks and then they come back and do amazing. So that's why a lot of these moments feel like turning points but we're going to move to the next moment or done with playoff talk. Kim removing to moment number seven is not shy to. There's a change up to get him swinging nasty stuff minoa strikes out oh door. Here's the three two and a dot com. Look at that swing. How leitch judge was might have been sitting slider and among noah strikes out judge one day guy she oak. Did he go yes he did. He chased the slider down in a way. Strike strikeout number for alec. Manoa five scoreless innings. So this one is alec manolas debut. We're going all the way back to may twenty seventh at yankee stadium. Known expected him to be up this early. We've talked about it. We all expected him to spend a lot more time in the minor leagues lower minor leagues. I not bumped up directly aaa and then expectation after expectation has just shattered when minoa comes up and he has probably one of the best seasons in franchise history for a rookie And it started on this day at yankee stadium. He shoves ios six innings pitched to hit zero earned runs to walk seven strikeouts in matters extra. So because it's only a two zero win for the blue jays. It's not like they blew out the yankees in that game. They skated by by barely. Any offense and eloquent start was pivotal for that. I'm very cool moment for his family as well. Who's obviously in attendance there From what we heard very loud and they were very big part of the atmosphere there so obviously this isn't one of alec noah's best starts of the season. We know he had incredible. Starts you know against the raise late around in the season where carried a no hitter until later in the game and i think he had an eight innings pitched one hit start at one point but I think when we're talking about special moments will remember from this season as alec. Minoa debut game is definitely one if he's going to be a starter for the blue jays for the next four five years. It's going to be a moment. We're going to remember for sure. Yeah look at the job alec always able to do and i don't think anybody expected this. I mean i think two of us said there was a zero percent chance that he comes up this season and if he even did come up it would be because in september bluejays were out of it. Well in may they were somewhat in it. He came up and was one of the reasons they stayed in it and to be completely honest. He's my game starter in any playoff series if you have robbie ray and you have brio starting. That wildcard game. I'll be honest. I think maybe even game one depending on who's in the rotation next season a lot of things have to fall into place but he has playoff picture playoff pitcher written all over him. And you look at what the blue jays needed they had. I think two guys in the rotation at one point legitimate guys like the rest were either injured or guys just filling in for guys that were injured. And noah comes up he. Is you look at burritos him embryos. I think were the two. That really transitioned this rotation from being a passable at best to honestly one of the better rotations in the american league. And even the mlb like really like you. I think it's tough to say how good he was. Because i think a lot of us didn't really have much expectations. But at the same time he came up was one of their best starters. And when you think about it. The blue jays have him in pearson probably slated in the rotation and in the rotation for the next four to five seasons. So we like. I said if if you're on a playoff series this could easily be your two three games two or three starters like not really pearson. Because he didn't have as much of a season just because of injuries. But when you're looking at alec manoa he was amazing and all you can say is that how do you make. Maybe he became a little earlier. Blue jays win a couple more games. But i'm not gonna get into that topic that's a whole other thing but alec manila comes up is one of the best pitchers and twenty twenty two is. He's i think he's a lock honestly for that to spot or two or three. So it'll be good to see and it was. Just it was amazing to see him. Blow a fastball. By some of the best homerun hitters in the league in aaron judge it absolutely was and for allah quinoa we knew the segment. We had the quinoa. Watch as much as it didn't last long. It was something that was. I enjoyed doing it every week. With all of speculating. Changing our timelines and everything like that and we all know how it was just so unpredictable for him to come up here two years after being drafted and You know none of us would have ever thought that. This was legitimately possible in spring training. So for alec manila. Come up like that like the way. He did a yankee stadium. Debut like that and yeah maybe turning himself into probably one of the top three starters in this rotation. I mean he's definitely one of them and we mentioned last week as well when we recorded about him being playoff material and having that caliber in him. And that's why you look forward to what the future holds firm and you know that he's going to have another solid role on the team next year. So alec minoa definitely a great moment and that was the beginning If you want to talk about the brioche thing earlier on which was another. I think it was the tenth moment this was when it started to steer in the right direction alec came up and at the time it looked like a desperation move. They look like the james. We're pretty much out of options. And you know they kind of were and there are really really relying on him in a rookie like that to do that and pitch that well and they're really taking the chance that he would have done that. And it turned out to work for him. And that's why if began to steer it around and then of course the brioche thing completely fix kind of solve them and put everything in that right direction but alec manila was definitely the starting point to the turnaround to this rotation and he was filthy aside and you look forward to what he can do. Next as well in a full season with alex on your rotation the james appear to be in good hands and hopefully he's also in that playoff rotation as well next year. So we'll see what happens with that. But alec manoa definitely one of the bright spots and definitely one of the key moments from this year for sure with some becoming officially becoming a member of the jays in the big league roster and looking back at the rotation in the early parts of the season. I do want to allude to give credit to ross stripling. I know this is a moment about alec minoa. But this is part of our You know season. Recap and postmortem on the season ross. Stripling was very good for the blue jays for an extended period of time in the rotation. And i don't think we can forget that blue jays wouldn't be where they were without. Ross stripling of course. There are other players on this team. That are more important. Like alec manolas. We've talked about robbery. Other starters and made more of an impact than ross stripling but for a period of time there in june in july. He really solidified. The blue jays rotation engage them depth than salt starts where they needed it so. I just wanted to get that in there. I'm roster blink fan so want to give him credit for that bs alec minnow. His debut is an amazing moment from this season. Alright onto moment number six so here you go this matchup. Everybody's looking put basis loaded one outland guerrero against match sirs swinging get up slammed verve bratty. Junior came four. Here's the three to pitch. So we're gonna dry deep dissenter. Get up outta here. His second home on the night to straightaway center three overnight for career. High home.

"If you look at the big picture this is still been a fantastic month for them. But if i'm looking at this series. I don't like what i saw in game two. No that's the game they won. But here's the thing. There was eleven walks in that game and it easily could have been very very different. Six of those are actually eight of those. Excuse me was charged to alec manila. Part of it. You can argue that. The strike zone was extremely favorable for the raise. You look at especially in robbie. Ray start pretty much all three games. They re pitches that were called strikes for the blue jays and then in the next inning or a blue jay hitters and then in the next inning pitcher withrow patient. I said okay. That's a strike. It was called a strike lasting and then the umpire wouldn't call a strike. And i think like whoa. So what is it a strike only in the top of the inning. For some reason. Now i i don't understand this but that i think will work itself out. I mean you can't rely on empires giving you favorable calls. You still gotta make those pitches. I think the blue jays can do it in. Tampa bay is a good team. They will take their walks. A lot of them were on three. Two pitches or three two counts too with manila. So he was battling and it's it's not really a huge concern you know. Hopefully he can rebound in that. It looks like maybe the series finale against the raise but another thing that is concerning to me. The pitching wasn't as much of a concern. But george springer is still concerning to me and i say concerning in the sense that he is not healthy. His lower body is not where it should be. he's been plagued by injuries. And so i understand that he's not gonna be one hundred percent now and he clearly isn't but at some point. I think the blue jays need to ask themselves. Do we sit him. Maybe a couple of days give him because we talked his last week. Do we do they sit him and give somebody else. Maybe a chance to lead off or maybe move him lower in the order because in this series was over five today one for three in the second game and then one for four in the first game. So two hits. He was hit list today. As i mentioned but the one good thing i noticed that the the first pitch of the game he made some very good contacted. Unfortunately was just caught by tampa bay. But if.

"Is going to be a little strategic in how i do this Gonna go ale. mvp first because I wanna get the super hot. Take out of the way And and these days. I like on baseball tonight last night. Buster i got ambushed because all year long carl ravage has been on the shohei ohtani for mvp bandwagon. In fact before the season started he actually picked him to win the award and last night he said no. I'm switching to vladi and listen. I love what ladimir guerrero junior has done this year. It's phenomenal it's wondrous he's twenty two years old he's one of the best hitters alive. He's having a great season. I think the blue jays are gonna make the playoffs at what shohei otani is doing. It's not just that it's unique or that we've never seen it before. We just have to take him for what he is which is two players in one. That's exactly right one on sunday baseball last night. We had this conversation. And i like you felt a little ambush because alex rodriguez is changes support Junior and i said look if this is flowers awesome. You'd be talking about a top ten quarterback and also an all pro middle linebacker. Choi otani is all wrapped up in one player. And i agree with what joe man said. Earlier this year that it's not even close joe madden said to damascus. Gershon is the little league classic. Look we might not see this for another hundred years and when it comes down to the voting the fact is is that shohei otani has generated far more value than vladimir juniors greatest. He is yeah. I look at it in in a couple of ways number one shohei otani is. Let's just say ninety percent offensively. What vladimir guerrero junior is here somewhere in that vicinity ninety percent. What would you rather have. Would you rather have vladimir guerrero junior or ninety percent of vladimir guerrero junior and alec minoa because if you look at shohei ohtani pitching statistics they are right in line with alec manila's an honestly after his start on sunday Even better and the second part of this is in. It goes back to to where i've been on this since the miguel cabrera mike trout debate. i understand the triple. Crown is an incredible thing to win. I i still believe that. Even if batting average in rbi's don't have quite the resonance that they once did. But i'm sorry if if ladimir guerrero junior buster finishes one. Rbi short of winning the triple crown. That doesn't lessen the brilliance of his year at all just as winning the triple crown should not severely enhance the candidacy. The just how good his candidacy actually is. I hate getting caught up in this idea of of made up. Things determining value what determines value is production on the field and in terms of production on the field. Nobody has come close to otani this year. No his twitter. I had to followers who are tweeting stats. And because i heard on sunday night baseball you know saying that. I would pick otani. And they were tweeting a vlad's offensive stats at me. Why we look at his offense stats compared to otani. And my response was yeah. How can you post.

"You guys are doing well. Sure are we'll get to what is typically a huge weekend here in a second but first and foremost talking of field of dreams today after the scene yesterday and dyers ville i will. What did you make of the game and the presentation I didn't get the all of it at game last night. That bluejays obviously so we had it on kind of a side monitor in the studio because it was starting earlier as we were Kind of get game mode ourselves but It looks beautiful like visually. It was studying. That's for sure and the players sure seem to Have a great time and all their quotes after made it sound like it was a fantastic experience and you know the game delivered to say the least what happened in the ninth inning chop it bottom so I thought it was very cool. I i was a part of a couple of those games back. When i was doing sunday night baseball. We have two one in williamsport Where the little league world series is played and we did one at a military base fort bragg in north carolina so I i know how much work goes into them. And i thought the The folks at fox did a great job and it sure looked great from what i can tell moving onto the blue jays. Dan assess what you saw there in los angeles in anaheim As they make their way up to seattle yet not great you know you would have loved to have seen them take three out of four. I think it was kinda almost predictable. You know coming off at first home stand and all the emotion taking three out of four from the red sox and springer home run to win it on sunday You almost thought. Wow maybe a little bit susceptible to elect down or a bit of a trap against the angels. They you know they didn't get swept. They split but I i think they could have done a little bit. Better burritos. just didn't have his best stuff. Obviously last night and vladimir guerrero xenophon for the first time all sees it really. We haven't seen this so They're not exactly clicking on all cylinders right now but they've got enough good hitters. The lineup still should be grid and really their starting rotation as a strength. I don't know how many people around you know. Data the us around fall saying oh bluejays brooks but You know burritos last night. Notwithstanding you've got him you've got ray you've got your. You've got manila and right got matched your fifth. That's that's a really good rotation the numbers bear it out over the last couple about so They're doing okay. They've they've got their work cut out for them still whether they are trying to catch boston or new york or oakland. They've got catch couple of teams to make the playoffs. So they're certainly time and they're in a decent spot in the standings but they're going to have to keep playing while they're going to do it dan. I know he's not going this weekend. But you just mentioned alec manila. We'd like to claim one of our own and anybody that comes through. We do that Here in vancouver. But what has he meant to to that blue jay staff and certainly this is a guy i mean the stage just does not look too big for him not at all and and we saw that in triple eight this year we certainly saw major league debut against the yankees and you know some guys come off his confident but you watch them or you talk to them and you go feels like a bit of an act..

"I am very tough. The ringer joined by rally of van. Graphs meg got an end to a fun. Fact that i have been tracking hearing about for a while this week and kind of relieved because i was very conflicted about this fun fact. That could decide if it was fun or not or whether it was lying it was lying to some extent has all fun facts do but there was also some truth to it. It was a fun fact about blue jays rookie starter alec minoa. And he had a number of starts to begin his career in which he allowed four or fewer hits and so i kept seeing this fun fact circulate. Every time he would start he got up to his first. Ten career starts in which he allowed four hits or fewer. It's the longest streak of that kind to start a career in mlb history and on the one hand alec. Minoa has been very good very effective. He's been part of the resurgent. Pu jays pitching staff so it is true that he has been good but also in some of those starts where he allowed four or fewer hits. He did so because he just didn't last long rain came. And so it's one of those things where yeah of course. This didn't happen in an earlier era. Baseball history because pitchers would go deeper into games and thus they would allow war hits in some of those starts and it would break the streak and yet you would rather have them going deeper into games. Even if it meant that they were allowing fewer hits so for instance in his second career start on june second allowed four hits exactly but three of them were homers and so allowed four hits ed for runs in three and a third innings so you would not call that a successful start at was for fewer hits and then june nineteenth. He made another start. This was against baltimore. He gave up four hits and all four of them were home runs. Gave up five runs on four hits in for homers net game and again lasted three and a third innings. So on the whole he's been excellent but the streak was extended by some of these very ineffective starts the radio. You also had one on july ninth against the raz where he gave up three hits and three runs and be wasted three and two thirds. So you know three of those ten starts. He failed to finish four innings. So you might see that fun fact and think. Wow like he had a streak of ten excellence starts to start his career which is misleading and yet not totally misleading. Because if the point is hey out minoa. He's been pretty good well. That part is true. At least right. Yeah it's i mean yesterday. Yuck gave up five hits. I've hit. They struck out eleven guys and even to run the only give them to run so once six and two thirds so yeah there there are a lot of ways to present quality if one if one searches and we should always be skeptical of of fun facts that might depend on early exits. Yeah there were a couple other things related to start length. this week. that were interesting on tuesday. I saw something tweeted by stats. And they pointed out that the longest start in the majors on that day was six innings and the fun fact was this is the first time in upi history that every team was an action on a given day and no starter pitched more than six innings. Which is a pretty good fun fact to that's interesting. It sounds like a sign of the times. Now it does lie a little bit. In one of those games nets at metz was suspended as afraid to say heavily at multiple weather delays this yes and then also there is a pitcher's duel going on in dodgers phillies and max scherzer and air nola were boasts dealing but then there was a long rain delay and so they were both removed after that rain delay and the way they were going. I'm guessing one of them would have made it more than six innings if the came head continued uninterrupted. But it didn't and so you got this fun fact so there caveats that go along with almost every fun fact ethic still interesting because it it's note worthy. I mean no started going more than six innings on a day where every team is playing even if the weather played a part. It's still something that would not have happened in. An earlier era rate is emblematic of major league. Baseball in twenty twenty one so still were sharing. I think at least in that case. Well and i. I don't know that this is the way that everyone responds to fun facts. But sometimes i think that the fun fun facts like the one you showed about or you know like there's the start of a conversation you heard that and you're like well. Hey wait a minute that could mean a couple of different things and then you spend some time. Gin getting to know alec manila. That's that's a good use of your time as a baseball person so right so sometimes when they're obviously potentially potentially not always sometimes you look into a minority rule. That's an undisputably fun fun factory. There's there are no kinks in that fun fact that infect anyway and so you know you find that out but sometimes it just gives you an opportunity to go learn about a guy that you didn't know much about and that those are fine so yeah now the day after that day when no one went more than six innings they were a couple billy good and long starts that were also notable because they had unusually low pitch count so adam wainwright. He threw a nine inning shutout in granted it was against the pirates. But still he went nine innings and he threw eighty eight pitches ashes. Like if a maddox is a hundred pitches or fewer. I don't know what a ninety pitch or fewer complete game shutout is. Maybe it's a win right. But was the first time anyone had done that since sandy hook contra in twenty nineteen kyle hendricks also did it in two thousand nineteen and then jeff samardzija did it. Twenty fifteen corey kluber in two thousand fourteen henderson alvarez in two thousand fourteen i'm cribbing from the base braford stat head email here but that's something that happens maybe every couple years or so at this point and that's something you see where like pitch counts are climbing. Because in general it takes more pitches. Get a strike then announced via some other method. Although maybe if you're more efficient might take more pitches per plate appearance. But maybe you'll face fewer batters than you would if you're allowing lots of contact and you get some of them out more quickly but others you don't get out at all. But that's a pretty impressive one in a also like the idea that the maddox as a term has just entered the baseball lexicon. Yeah in a way where i think. Even wainwright cited it and this is just something that came from a blog. Post that jason. Luke heart he wrote in two thousand twelve where he coined the idea of the mathematics and now everyone just refers to the magic. Says if we always have so wainwright himself said i didn't look at my pitch count all day. I knew it was low..

"Right now. All huge because you can feel good about getting a win. Three out of five nights now Whenever you have real ray or burrito score in the mound you can vary much. Expect to win on three out of five nights. I guess at this point. Maybe it's three out of six because currently it's six man rotation until they decide what they want to do with stephen matt's you could probably make a case that the way alec manila pitched on saturday could lead to add feeling about winning a fourth. Whenever you go around and then ross stripling you get what you get from your fisk guy and he can turn out some really quality outings. He can turn out some stinkers But lately ever since that big meltdown may ross stripling more often than not has delivered quality starting pitching so i think it is the move that kind of locked in the rotation to be able to kind of like how david price locked in twenty fifteen rotation as things were coming together marco estrada coming in and doing really well after came in from the bullpen. In two thousand fifteen aren dickey figured it out in the second half of two thousand fifteen who also is net rotation stroman came back later but regardless i the two thousand eighteen reputation really solidified itself to the point where you know you're probably gonna get at least six good innings per outing for new starter in turn it over the bullpen and deliver some wins. That's what berea could do. I think we'll do for this rotation it's incredibly exciting but we can debate about the price tag on it for schumer is a very steep price to pay so i am not taking away from that. It is something that will be debated about for years down the road if one of two of those guys or both turned into stars for the twins or if or if they can't be son burritos after twenty twenty two so it'll be interesting but for now we should be pretty happy i think right. There is the kicker on who wins that raid. Correo stays after twenty twenty. This looks like even trade. I think at the end of the day for both sides right now but Adam gonna give you the point here at talk prospects and burritos but the rumor has it was not only where the yankees involved with this the red sox and the phillies were also the other quote unquote contenders to land jose burritos. The blue jays ended up landing as the quote unquote front runner for about five minutes until they announced the trade. And so first off your feelings on the trade the price. We ended up. As i know you were high on. Us and martin is untouchable and hands off. Sorry no trade fund. So let me. Let's hear the corsair rant of the evenings. I feel a comic not so much of iran. It's all right so we. We had reason to believe friday that there was going to be The blue.

"Yeah i don't know that point You mentioned how takes usually for players to come up through the blue jays minor league system and eventually become actual blue jays alec. Manila is one of the ones in the most recent history to make it that quickly to the majors. Even shut you know was cutlass. Three years basically the minor league system alec manoa was twenty nineteen correct. Yes so crate. Kirk was also because i actually saw kirk back in bluefields. I hadn't been three years ago. Four years you get drafted twenty eight. Whatever year. we picked up her. Denial international in two thousand sixteen right. There he goes or years or so. But that's the average if you're a good player and you can find a level the stand out at usually that four or five year. Ballpark is a normal development cycle. Right unless you're playing an organization where you're you know perennial last place you know like the reason we're seeing the guys are playing on the orioles. Right now is they. Just don't have that depth on the top minor league system and we're getting to start to see guys like cedric mullins and whatnot come out in those organizations but that being said the bluejays obviously or log jammed and we've already talked about this extensively and i guess adam more points to you as far as segues go because you know we're gonna go right to watch friend was ready to dive on a minute ago. So the blue jays have had these you know. They built up the farm system. We have this. You know endless seeming play of a middle infielders of our system. What do we do with all this kind of stuff. Bluejays are on. That cost right now where they are actually technically in better standing when they were in the two thousand fifteen season because they're actually about five hundred. This isn't a complete sell the farm situation to the point where you're gonna deplete the hall farm system but there is something there if you make the right moves this team right now gets much better and actually could make the giant playoff push that we need them to do. We've seen chinks in the armor for the yankees. Red sox have been holding on is still playing great baseball but we still don't know if that's going to continue with the injuries i really feel like they're hinging there a lot on the fact that they can land chris sale healthy and run really well here at the end of july and august. But that's what we're they're hoping on. The rays are being the raise. I don't know how they're still doing it. Sued and they're hoping to get wandered franko but fill out and doing what he does. We got some trade offers that the blue jays have been a quote unquote checking out. And let's start off with a weird one that i that caught me really would surprise. Nelson cruz has been in the blue jays. Meyer or you know twitter verse talking in articles and whatnot. I i don't understand this move. Adam i can see you chomping at the bit to hop on this one. So i'm gonna let you just you know dive on this whole thing. I love nelson cruz. But does he fit this team. No but that's the on twitter people refusing to trade trent thornton for long..

"You know maybe this was really that thing where they say. I think we're done with this. We can't lose a six straight game. If they lost that game that would have been there six straight loss especially to the baltimore orioles like no disrespect to the orioles but the blue jays would be the the clowns of baseball if they got swept or loss that series. You can't have that happen and look what you see. You see the blue jays. Get get an unfavorable call. Alec was not intentionally throwing at at whoever it was. I don't remember off the top of my head but it was not an intentional throw. He was getting roughed up and he's a rookie. He's made i think it was four starts coming into that game. You're not going to go up and try to show up anybody by hitting them. The worst alexander was going to do is stare at home play while he's rubbing the baseball but even that's really not bad like nobody's taking any offense to that so for the blue jays. It's like hey you know this is not a good thing. We don't like this and we're gonna hopefully do something about it. And they rallied in the ninth started from the lower. Half of the order batted around and they won. It was great. And i like. I feel like it. Just it was one of those things where maybe that was truly the tipping point and maybe the necessarily the loss in the previous game wasn't the tipping point but it was okay a new day today and then they fall behind and their pitcher gets thrown out. And it's like we're done with this like we can't keep doing this. We're supposed to be a contending team. Were supposed to have one of the top outfielders in baseball on our roster. And we're obviously. They don't have springer yet. they haven't had them for more than a couple of games. But they're supposed to get him back and they know that they're a better team than this and to say we're going to keep letting these little things add up and resulting losses is just. It's it's not what the team supposed to do. And they took control of it. Sort of i mean it was a. It was a weird brawl. Like you could see the orioles. Some of their their staffer like no guys get get behind there but stay in the dugout but then everyone else was just kind of beefing each other. And you see guerrero pickup freddie galveston. Pick them up. Bring them back over to the dugout and you see the managers. They're all in it like everybody was in this argument and it was like we're done fair enough. You want to say that that albino intentionally threat a guy. that's a load of bs. You ask pretty much. Anybody like that was not intentional. But my blue jays came back. Anthony came into the game. I think a little bit earlier than he was expecting to but credit to the blue jays. They got themselves to win an alec manila. Let's see where you can go from there. I think he'll be even more fired up. Because especially after getting ejected for a terrible reason the first thing i think that's on his mind is to try and destroy the orioles in my next start but yeah that was. It was a fantastic way to kind of get into the middle part of the game. They eventually win that and then they win the second game or the third game to win their second straight but yeah it was a you know it was a weird situation but maybe we can look back on at the end of a ten game win streak and say that this was probably the the fuel to that fire absolutely..

"The capitalize on these winds so it was a successful two to three now. Let's sweet miami with these two games and of course you have baltimore on the weekend. Take two to three again. Why not not to be debbie downer here but i do think that there are still obviously big problems with this to your shirt. I think we saw in today's game. Matt harvey coming into today's game. His last seven starts. I think it was. He had an era above fourteen. If i'm remembering remembering the number correctly and the only had one of those starts in which he gave less than five runs He's been horrible. Like there's no beating around the bush. There and i expected the blue jays to come out swinging but for the early goings for the first two innings. It seemed like they were really really struggling against him. So i still have concerns about the consistency about of the offense. I still have concerns. Obviously about the bullpen but by and large takeaways from this series are obviously incredibly positive. and jacob. you mentioned reese mcguire. That's another positive all around baseball but especially the blue jays have been struggling to get production from the bottom their lineup. And having someone like reese mcguire there in the bottom part. Who's really heating up. He has over his last seven games on average a batting average of four twenty had any at three doubles today so Just an incredible performance for him and helps extend the blue jays landed. Especially when you consider George springer coming back view lords gray yelling there regularly of course. We had to oscar named on maternity List and he's coming back so having all those guys back extensive blue jays lineup and it helps them so so much In terms of consistency of the offense another thing that helped them Or appeared to help them. This weekend was that and bench-clearing if you wanna call it a brawl. They didn't really fight in game. Two on saturday I think we're all on the same page air but at the notion have been tossed. That much is clear to me. I assume it's kurt. You guys Do you think that that was kind of. I know it's easy to rewrite history and look at this as turning point so far in the season but it seems like that moment really lit a fire under the blue jays and got them going. I don't know if that's really what it is. I think it's to be able to pin on it on that but a lot of people have been doing that. What are you saying. You know what. I saw quite a few guys on that. Not even just on the team like on the active roster. But i saw coaches and i saw managers just as equally involved in that bench clearing brawl as the players and i think that really was may be the boiling over point of our pitchers struggling alec manila use a he was. He was actually very good. An era under three going into that start. Now it's almost. It's above four considering that he only three thirds innings. But you have a guy that you're expecting to do well. You have a team that you're expecting to do well and they just. Obviously the team has been performing. Well now you have your pitcher not only not being the picture that you've you've seen all throughout the first couple starts but now he's being ejected for a reason that you don't think is very fair and credit to the blue jays..

"Hello and welcome tap so one hundred twenty three thirty eight postmark. Paulie has always joined by bryson. And jacob is a lot better Day to be talking about the blue jays and it was last time we recorded absolutely it was so we had the opening game. A little rain. Delay the second game 'cause which caused doubleheader yesterday and we finally saw the debut from yours truly allocate and. That was the obviously highlighted of yesterday. Despite the second loss of the doubleheader a lot of people a lot of good takeaways from the series alone on jay's end up winning the series anyway to three against the yankees we also like considering. They came back from a being swept by the raise. Losing his series to the red sox. It's it's it's good to gain ground on the al east and thankfully i mean they're done with the east for a little bit but you know it's good to get some ground on while you could especially considering that the standings will start to solidify going into the summer months. Yeah this is a point where it starts to a you know you can actually start to read into what the standings sakes before you know. It's it's like two months into the season. You know forty fifty games. It doesn't really matter but at this point it starts to get you know where you can start to actually read read into what it says. So let's talk about alec. Minoa is obviously that was very exciting. Six innings pitched to hits zero runs to walk seven strikeouts. We all saw the emotion of his family. Visiting at yankee stadium seeing him. Strike out the yankees lineup. It was pretty incredible The thing i am most grateful from this start is the fact that a was a seven inning doubleheader and be the bluejays barely user bullpen at all all day so they had the off day built-in with the postponed game on wednesday and then going into thursday they only use one inning of jordan romano in game one and then one point one innings of aj coal in game too. So that's the thing. I'm most thankful of from this thankful to robbie. Ray thankful dalek granola for even though the fact that they lost the second game they didn't stretchable and which we know was a huge talking point in our last episode alec manila robbie ray. They were great Well i mean robbie ray had a bit of a tougher outing but if you can If you can get that many innings out of a starter and especially considering a two innings to cover that's perfect I think alec minoa. I want to talk about him he. He was very impressive. He didn't start off the greatest i think. He walked his first batter but then he struck out. He ended up striking out seven over six innings to walks northern runs. As you just said he. But the thing that i found most impressive was his actual stuff. And i'm gonna go out and say when i saw his fastball. It almost reminded me of jake arrieta back when he was with the cubs because that thing was moving all over the place to the point where it it honestly looked like a slider or some other type of pitch and i think that was extremely impressive. You didn't see a lot of jitters from alec minoa now i was watching very hesitantly. Because i jokingly put a thousand dollar bet that he would get a no hitter and that was kind of happening for a bit of time but I was very very impressed by him..

That game that we needed We're going to break down but look before we get ahead of ourselves do some some quick regarding the j. so we can all be on the same page regarding this live stream and recording if you're listening to this podcast streep first of all the currently sit with a record of twenty five and twenty three. We are recording this. After the first game and during the second game of the blue jays doubleheader said the bluejays. So far have won the series against the yankees. They're trying to get the sweep going. Hopefully they can do that. But that's the positive since our lascaux though the jays have fallen off quite a bit only one out of three against boston and getting swept by the tampa bay. Rays four games in a row. The blue jays had fallen six straight games before. They walked into yankee stadium. And we're able to get back in the win column so again hopefully they terry's i mean sorry. The queen sweep with this if not they had the series. And that's good enough. Especially going into yankee stadium so now that me get that out of the way. You can tell that she loves him very much. It was incredible to watch to my heart on top of that. What a stat line. Six innings pitched no earned runs to hit seven strikeout sixty of his pitch. A sixty of his eight pitches were thrown for strikes do was in control do was cruising dude looked phenomenal. That being said starting rotation was rather than with nate pearson and thomas hatch going through their respective injuries. Hopefully hodgkin join them soon. It was only a matter of time before at manila was called up. So brennan start with you man. I resident canadian chop it up. This was an act of desperation by the jays. Or do you think this call up was truly earned in warranted or maybe it's a combination of both in other words. The rotation was healthy. Would we be seeing alec minoa today. No i don't think so To answer your original question was a little bit of both a little bit of desperation for team. That was down in the dumps after getting swept by the raise and lose in the last two games of the series against boston. And i know we're going to dissect those series and my goodness there's a lot to take about this Disabled least so a little bit of act of desperation but at the same time. It was well earned. It was a very well earned. Call up by alec. Manila and he proved that today. Even joe sydell post-game on sports net..

"There's the with with the way the bullpens been managed as i think there's only so much that can be done right now until there's guys that come back unless you wanna bring some guys up and like you said with wagons back. Tj then you can you can. You can better manage it and have guys that are more equipped for certain situations. Go into those situations. Yeah i mean with the bullpen. It's just in terms of the management. I don't know it just going back to what i said. I think it's just been a headache in terms of everything. And that's why i'm gonna cut. Charlie went toil some slack. I understand some of it has been a little bit questionable but you know in jacob. You're mentioning. i don't think they've run out of gas yet. But i do think we're getting close at this rate. I it until the end of the month for sure. I just a lot of these guys are doing. Well i mean we they are. I mean ryan baroque. He's been Doing fine. I know his ear as a little bit inflated from one bad inning and a couple of weeks ago but other guys like tyler chat with david phelps at the time unfortunately he is no longer an option for the time being but other guys join remind figuring it out and a lot of these guys either way. I don't know what it is. Because i don't know the mind that they have. I don't know if they're kind of caught off guard in terms of starters not going deep into games. I'm not sure what they are thinking or planning. All i know is it must be a massive headache or complete chaos in terms of what they have going on so definitely some things. I have highlighted. That are have been i guess. Disappointing are not disappointing. Interim maybe just me being wisest guy and and not that guy but you know in terms of this if this continues to go on if the jays ever slowly got a healthy. I think i'm gonna look a little bit more but right now i'm at this point. I'm just praying that they can someone get healthy. And that's why i kind of can understand her. Feel bad for the management or i. Guess whatever the heck. Charlie manteo pete walker are how they're trying to get by this point. Yeah definitely a nitpicking area. "They can't risk the future of alec manoa putting him up into the major leagues too early. Even if say maybe the team would benefit from just getting those innings out of them. I still think that the plan is getting working through everything that he needs to before at at minimum next season i'm still saying zero percents see if in aaa i i just have a hard time giving him zero percent because he's so close to one level away from the job however i still think it's unlikely but if i give it a percentage i'd probably say thirty or thirty five percent. I don't think it's possible. I think it's possible a lot of stuff have to happen mark. I agree with you but if injuries pile up and you know for example. I know this is crazy based on the amount of injuries. They've had but if this somehow lingers in the jays are desperate or in need of our desperate need of arms or anything like that maybe the bullpen burns out and they need options. You have to consider you have to end. This is talking about later on in the season because of course you want to see him pitch games in aaa before. You even consider it so right now. Like i mentioned are using a five man rotation you have nick al-bir alligator i think that's how you pronounce correctly. Alec minoa tj. Zoe who we've seen this year. A few times and jacob wagon so those that's the five man rotation open up for the bisons but alec manoa you gotta give starts or a few starts before you even consider it but i'm a little bit surprised because i thought some like for example swimming woods. Richardson starting aa for new hampshire. And i thought for sure those two would both be in aa. I guess we were all wrong. But i guess that just proves the spring that alec manila had jays really liked what they saw. And you have to consider this in excel ration- of if is developing east skipping all those levels and starting right off aaa i know. He was the first round draft pick from last year or a couple of years beforehand. But i guess the jays really like what they've seen. And i'm all for it. I trust the development plan of how ross atkins power have done. Things based on their track records went back to cleveland and so far in toronto with for example. Bogus guerrero bijou. All these guys look how they've developed improperly developed. I'm all for whatever they decide because of how it's turned out but if he's in aaa you have to give it a percentage that he will be up here at some point..

"Twenty twenty. Three april slash may earliest twenty twenty. Two april slash. May maybe forces blue jays hand. Maybe there's injuries etc. But that's what i think quick question for you to now since we're talking about prospects what is your. Do you have an updated timetable. On austin martin. Would you guys thinking about aston martin right now. I'm i'm this. I'm i'm a hedge my bets on all these prospects so i'm going to say probably twenty twenty three as well. I know he was supposed to be in the draft one of the most developed hitters and one of the most major league ready hitters. But i still don't really see him jumping the line that much especially when the blue jays seemed to have everyone they need in the majors already in the infield and to a lesser extent in the outfield. So i don't think we're going to run into a situation where there's injuries have forcibly jay's hand so i put it two thousand twenty three i'm gonna say two thousand twenty two holes like marcus. Simeon is on a one year deal. He is at second base this season after this season. Kevin bijou goes back to second. You know have a hole in the in the infield. Maybe that whole it goes to austin martin entrusting. Maybe i'm being way too optimistic. I'm really high on this guy. I want him. I want to see him As as quickly as i can. And i know that's very contradictory to pretty much everything i said about Alec manila. But i wanna see this guy pitch or i want to see this guy play rather i think it might be next season do you think. Bg oh goes to second and martin goes to third or do you think stays at third and market goes to second. Because i know there were concerns about martin's arm and his defensive abilities in the draft. I believe that's why he fell a little bit to number five. So i could see bijou does just staying at third and then martin moving over to second jacobs on the spot here. I'm not sure. I think i need to see more of him. In order to really make that assessment. Because we he's played a few games this spring. But i haven't seen him like i haven't been able to actually see him. Just 'cause i don't think many of them have been televised. So i'm up. Upsets a fifty fifty shot. You know maybe if he does really well at third no reason to to moving back but at the same time it's i i'm not sure it's hard to predict right now. I think we really need to see next season or next spring training before we can really make that assessment mark. What was the Where was the position of concern was at second base or third base. I believe it was third base. If i'm remembering correctly. I'm not an expert on the draft. But i'm looking through his game logs back in twenty nineteen vanderbilt. Yeah he spent most of his time in two thousand. Nineteen base played fifty two games at third base..
