Firing squads were once a pretty standard form of capital punishment, but with medical advances and drug cocktails that promised a more peaceful exit, they had become a lot more unusual. There have been only three firing squad executions since the 70s, all of those happening in Utah now they could be making a comeback. ABC's Dave packer is joining us on the northwest news line, and it looks like Idaho is the first state to really take action on this, passing a bill to authorize firing squads. Why did they decide they needed to do that? Well, one of the things that's been pushing this is the lack of the availability of the drugs that they've been using in lethal injections, which have been kind of the standard means of execution over the last decades. Pharmaceutical companies are looking at that and they say, you know, we don't want to provide these drugs to kill people. We're in the business of saving lives, not taking lives. And so that's left states in a quandary and in order to carry out these executions. Many states are looking to the past and firing squads are something that really we're using military executions, not so much for prisoners, but they're taking a second look at that now. And surprisingly, some folks are saying this might be despite the fact that it seems to be a very violent way to die. A more humane means of execution. Right, I saw there was a Supreme Court opinion on this that said firing squads are less cruel than lethal injection. That was an opinion a descent from a justice Sonia Sotomayor of all people. You consider her usually, okay, here's a liberal justice, but her quote was what cruel irony that the method that appears to be most humane might turn out to be our most cruel experiment. Yeah, she's talking about lethal injection where some 7% of all lethal injections go wrong. You've seen some cases where the person didn't die. The person was writhing in pain, clenching teeth, and one thing you can say about firing squads are pretty foolproof and pretty effective. Right. So what is the acceptable threshold for pain during an execution? I mean, at the very least, you're going to have to restrain the prisoner. There's going to be some discomfort there. This is a really difficult question I would think. You know, you're going to kill this person, but you can't have them in pain in the meantime. And they're saying that in terms of firing squads, the bullets strike the heart rupturing it, and that causes immediate unconsciousness, whereas with some other means of execution, lethal injection, you might have somebody who sent you for a while, feeling this pain, and there's no way to really know what they're feeling because obviously you can't ask somebody later after they've been executed. But there's the appearance of pain. And then there's the question, how much pain should be allowable? There's unreasonable pain and suffering. But perhaps some amount of pain would be okay. Folks who die accidentally often experience pain. So, but what is cruel and unusual? So these are all the questions that are being wrestled with. And what they're finding is, in terms of firing squads, there doesn't seem to be much time between the bullets hitting someone. And the point at which they die. And I think that's what executioners are saying, okay, well, maybe this might be a better way to do it, even if it seems more violent. Do they ever allow prisoners to choose their own method? Yeah, they do. And in fact, that you had talked about recent cases there was at one in 2010 that happened in Utah. And that was a case where the prisoner was able to choose and chose the firing squad, which seemed a bit unusual at the time. But that was the method he chose. In times past, we had electric chairs and then some of those were botched and we saw the electric chairs be put away. Ever since there's been capital punishment, there's been this sort of wrestling with how we do this in a humane way. And not be the Barbarians that we're punishing. It's easy to put people on death row. But many states have found it very difficult to actually carry out these executions. Yeah. ABC's Dave packer, while the northwest news line. Adobe, the dominant force for years in software such as Photoshop and illustrator for design professionals, announced the deal to acquire figma in September. The purchase is a massive bet that more creative work will be done by small businesses and everyday users on the web, a market that figma has rapidly seized. While Adobe has introduced less expensive streamlined products for that audience, most of its offerings are still heavyweight programs aimed at specialists. The company still expects to close the transaction in 2023 and is engaged in quote constructive and cooperative discussions with regulators in the U.S. UK and EU among others, according to an Adobe spokesperson, the Justice Department declined to comment. Adobe tried to buy figma in 2020 and 2021 as the startup rapidly gained steam, according to a filing with details on how the merger came together. Eventually in 2022, figma accepted and offered double its valuation at a time when many of its peers were seeing decreases. Wall Street analysts saw the price tag as revealing severe competitive pressures on Adobe, sigma unsuccessfully solicited a bid from Microsoft two before accepting Adobe's offer. The lawsuit represents Adobe's most serious spat with antitrust regulators since the 1990s when it was forced to divest a program that competed with its illustrator graphic design program as part of a merger with aldus corporation. The oculus quest three comes out so for right now you can buy the oculus quest to i want to say it's two ninety nine nice and it's really it's about the same price as like a an xbox but it's really really cool again you can only play for a couple of hours and that's fine because you need to take a break but what you can do with this for those of you out there listening to well. We're always You know working with the software developers on on new products and you know obviously hardware can't function without good software and now they're literally hundreds of pressure sensitive applications that can Take a walk companion. Just make great art and design it from you. Know adobe to correal to all the programs from autodesk and you know we're talking industrial design. We're talking animation Game development all these products are used to great to see anybody listening to this. Never seen the welcome product definitely take a look at their website. Denver has been the worst team and third quarters over the last 10 games, and the Cavaliers had been the third worst team. Some of their flaws were exposed over that three game slide you get it seemed like the calves weren't very good. Denver looks like world beaters. A Milwaukee so it's not like There are a lot of opportunities to do it. But in the grand scheme of things trying to get Jamal Murray right physically seems to be of the utmost importance. We don't have the gray hair. We're not taking a series and that's that's okay because it happens to everybody but the flip side to that. I want to ask you. How is being a student. Hell with your business. I think the resources the most Yeah i mean. I definitely think there is. There is wisdom that comes with age. But i think there's also wisdom that comes with experience and so i don't know i think i like to think that i'm someone that doesn't care that much people being so aldus do trying to do And i don't know. I don't like to extend my way so i i really gonna spend okay as a student entrepreneur. But i do think it's important to like just persevere and like just push through if you have an idea or goal like just keep working on it I think that as a student entrepreneur though Especially here at baylor. I feel like the way community has a lot of young entrepreneurs which are really cool to To get to know those people and you be a part of that Yeah as you mentioned. I have operation now. Zola coffee and pastries and also are on my ear. And just a at digs galleries in denison. She's a young shopowner as well So i think yeah the resources that you have on campus and with other students like you don't get back community once i mean you.
