I'm Michael Barr. This is Bloomberg Tom ball. 4 p.m. start. Sanity. Yeah. I mean, it's just that simple. It's great. Gotta go. So the kids can watch. I'm sure Aaron Boone is thinking what tessio said in The Godfather about the pitching rotation. You can't do this. This is screwed up my arrangements. And what do you do now? Is he advantaged by the one day delay? Is the Yankees advantage of the Indians advantage by the rest? Well, I think whoever wins there at a disadvantage because they got to play in the Astros. The next case. The next day. Right. They're playing Verlander. Oh, I thought the tigers slipped in. We'd be doing espresso reports if that happened. Yeah, I mean, this is a big one. And what's going on? This came up today, just very quickly here. We were talking to the wonderful Michael nathanson of Moffett, nathanson, and on the mister Murdock wants to piece together Fox again, and the first thing out of Nathan's mouth was the sports, the value of sports. Is all this is about. It's just come down to that Michael Barr has it. There's a great article that's on the Bloomberg terminal, and they're talking about how the networks like Fox, CBS, NBC, ESPN, they're all paying these exorbitant fees because you also have a challenge from Amazon and Apple because quite frankly, for cable, that's like the lifeline that they need to sports. That's all they got left. So yeah, I mean, it's news and sports. And they monetize news better than anybody else in the business. And then sports, but the question is for sports is with the fragmentation of the audience. Can you continue to pay these multi-billion dollar rights fees and make money on a smaller subscriber base already have to throw that to streaming? Last night before The Rain delay, I heard an echo from the west wing of the house. Sure. Can you help me find the Yankees game? On TV. They couldn't find it. You know, pleased to hear

I think the advice I would give is you don't need to know all the answers. The craziest thing was believing that your dad knew everything so as a dad you felt like you had to know everything and you had to get everything right. It's okay to make mistakes. As long as it's coming from love, then, you know, it kind of starts to work itself out. I want him to be able to

It's a whole new level for you and me, Chris. This relationship. Like and subscribe for the best weekly NBA content these two are capable of. What does that mean? Could be the best duo ever. I don't see how you can beat that. Here they are. Chris mannix and Howard back. And we are back crossover NBA podcast Chris mannix Howard's Beck with a new cast of characters joining us for part two of the Sports Illustrated NBA mega podcast, the co hosts of the crossover are here, Chris and Howard, the co host of open floor, Chris herring, and live from his dorm room in Central Florida, Rohan not Carney, Rohan, glad you could join us from I am podcasting as God intended from my parents house. Okay, that's awesome. There's no true or form of podcasting. Wait. Are you podcasting for the basement? There are no basements in Florida, unfortunately, but science willing, I would have been in a basement. If possible, but yeah, I'm podcasting the old fashioned way gentlemen. All right, well, the first part of this mega podcast was over on the open floor feed. That was our Western Conference preview. Now we're gonna do a little Eastern Conference storylines as we get geared up for the start of the NBA season on Tuesday night. And fellas, we gotta begin in Brooklyn, which is going to be a fascinating case study all season long. The nets have what I feel is like the highest ceiling, maybe of any team in the league. They also have potentially the lowest floor of any contender in the league because God knows how all these personalities mesh God knows if Steve Nash can coach them, God knows what Kyrie Irving's gonna wake up thinking on any given day. So Howard, I want to start with you then on the nets. And I guess we'll frame it this way. As you get ready for this season, with all the dust settling on everything that happened in the off season. Do you look at the nets as a contender or pretender as we begin this season? I think there are contender until further notice. So the backdrop of the summer is as ghastly as it gets. Raises a thousand questions. But they're all back and there's no outward signs right now that anybody is kind of just dragging themselves through practices and shoot rounds and games. Like there's the discontent that led to Kevin Durant's trade request that was wrapped up perhaps or not perhaps in kairi's wanting an extension that he didn't get. Whatever the misgivings, the bad feelings, the bad mojo, it's not clear right now. And granted, sometimes it's hard to tell because this team is so weird anyway, but until we actually see some cracks in them as they're constructed playing games as opposed to just the theater of the off season, then I'm going to look at them based on their talent and their talent as you said at mannix is as great as anybody's got in a big three. Now, Ben Simmons has never played with these guys except in the preseason. Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant haven't exactly had great success together so far in Brooklyn, but the last three years have been choppy to say the least. James Harden coming and going bubble, dread injury, Kyrie injury hard injuries, all of it. They're almost a blank slate. But I'm not going to evaluate them based on what was going on in July with Kevin Durant's trade request. They're all here, and it looks like they're all playing as hard as you would normally expect them to play in a preseason. So for now, they're contenders. They've got stars. They've got playmaking. They've got Ben Simmons, who's a Swiss Army knife, defensively. They've got great shooters in Seth curry and Joe Harris. They're pretty solid. And it's not as though the other contenders don't have their own caveats, albeit not quite as spectacular. Yeah, I just want to, I want to lean on the expertise of one of the most famous basketball writers of all time. His name's Howard Beck, who said earlier this summer, I remember when Kobe and Shaq hated each other and they were at each other's throats and the Lakers kept the team together and they made the NBA Finals. We'll remember Kobe Bryant famously tried to leave the Lakers in 2000 late 2000s. They keep him. They trade for pau Gasol, end up winning two more championships. Listen, I'm with Howard. There's the theater of off season and then there's what they can be on the floor. And on the floor, I'm about to say something insane. I think they're like a Dwight Howard away from potentially just running away from the rest of the east, okay? I think they're 5 man lineup of Joe Harris. Royce O'Neal Ben Simmons, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant has the potential to be, you know, you think about what the Celtics did last year with kind of this really switchable group. I think this next version has to be a potentially an amped up version of that group. I just think they need more front court depth. But you look at who can bring off the bench, Seth curry, TJ Warren, I'm really intrigued by what TJ Warren could possibly bring them. They're going to be in the mix for buyout guys. Just looking at on the court, you know, Simmons at the end of the day, he's finally playing the role we've all wanted him to play. He doesn't have to handle the ball. He doesn't have to worry about a 7 footer who needs post touches, clogging up the paint. I think there's a lot of potential here for them to be really, really good and even amid all the drama. Even amid all the James hard and drama from two years ago, when he joins the team, amid the drama last year when he's trying to get the trade out. When the guys have been on the floor outside of that Celtic series where Katie look gas, they've generally played well together. So I swing wildly back and forth on this team, but I'm describing myself in an in period right now. I'm all in on the nets. I think they have a chance to be fantastic. I really do. As crazy as it sounds, I think they could be, they could ball. I do want to circle back to something that has been mentioned, but I think it's getting glossed over a little bit. I just think it'll be something interesting to watch. For all the stuff that Durant said over the summer, not publicly, but just obviously through the trade request. He wanted Steve Nash out. What did Sean marks out?

Scarlett has got that look like you degenerate bar. What do you think a gambling in baseball? I know it's sounds like a tired subject. But it's big, it's huge, more states are coming on in game action of betting. It is here to stay. Oh, it's here to stay. And so right on the same lines with fantasy, you know, I think fantasy really propelled football and everything else. And it's not even really as much about watching the game as it is about falling players. But I think most of the baseball came to the conclusion of it's involving the fans so much that you have to open the doors to it. So that's why he starts seeing a lot more. I'm surprised. Where I played with the gambling and different things that went on with scrutiny, we had to go through after Pete Rose. You know, so it's kind of it shocked to my system, so to speak. Gambling, what? You know? But I see it now and I understand it angle with fan involvement and it really is an engagement for fans and it's helped the sport grow with people following it. So I think that's where they kind of had to side with, okay, here's what's going on. We have to hop in and get involved. Yeah, there's an argument to be made, though, that, I mean, and I get with legalized sports betting that you're going to have a lot of analytics and data so that people can look through them and figure out how to quantify their bets. But at the same time, with the explosion of statistics and analytics, we've seen other sports like football or basketball get more exciting, but there's an argument that the explosion of analytics and statistics have kind of ruined baseball has made the game more boring. Baseball was already very numbers have a very math heavy. Everything's done based on numbers in a way that the game is less exciting even though it might get a more optimized result. If you're just looking for wins. Well, you're dead, I'm scared. I think that's why we had to implement the rule changes we're seeing. The game slowed down. And it sounds like you're like, yeah. It absolutely did. Did we blame analytics and stats for that? Well, I really do. I think we look at the shift rule, okay? The increase of shifts, the defensive shifts where we're putting three or four defenders on one side to come up with the best plausible way to now. And then what we're telling hitters don't hit the ball the other way, batting average doesn't matter. We want you to hit home front. So if you guys have a problem, you're probably going to pull the ball. So then they throw defenders on one side of the field. And guys are hitting the ball into the shift instead of a way. And as a result, there was no base runners that run scoring went down. The batting average for the first time is the lowest since they lowered the mount in 1968. So there had to be a way to increase action. And I do believe that analytically, yes, we slowed the game down because of the efficiency of the defense and being able to implement the numbers. You spent 12 years in the majors. Ten with a Mariners. I know we've talked about a lot of changes with the everything pitch clock this and that, whatever. But in your era, what has changed compared to what you're seeing now. Well, I think one, the thought of getting a hit, hit it where the aim. So to speak, it's a big slug and that doesn't factor in the thinking of a lot of hitters today. They're trying to hit through them or hit it over them instead of hitting whether or not. The stolen base. I mean, that was one thing that was just, you know, I'll tell you guys a quick story. I think David brought this up earlier. I wanted to have stolen base title in 1987. I was the only guy in the decade that won outside of Ricky Henderson. Ricky was averaging like a hundred stills a year. And in 87, he got injured about May, he already had 30 stolen bases. And so the last day of the season that comes down to me and Willie Wilson of the Kansas City royal. We both have 59. I still a base. I win the title. This is over, we're not in the playoffs. I get home the next day in Seattle. My phone rings because we were down in Texas and I get back home to Seattle. Phone rings and it's Ricky Henderson. Ricky. He always talked to me in the third person. He'll say, hey, playing cards are gonna go, Ricky, got a sweet hand. That's how he talks. So I answer the phone. Hello. He says, Henderson here. What up, Rick? What's going on? Congratulate me, right? Uh huh. And he goes, 60 stolen bases. You ought to be ashamed. Click and hung on the phone. Are you hung up on Ricky? No, he hung up on me. That's great. That is statement. 60 stolen basically got a shame Click, hung up. And so you were asking, what's the difference? I think Ricky's Paul is hair out right now, seeing guys still in third and 40 bases of season. And even have that before the officer breaking that 30 or 40 stone bases. So that brought that story on. I figured it'd be entertaining. I have to say, though, watching someone steal base, it adds that element of a spontaneity, right? It's a mini drama within the bigger drama of the game itself. I remember as a tigers fan, Cecil Fielder, stole a base. And we lost our minds. No, the first basement. And you talk about a big dude. I'm like, there's no. He's been doing steel bases. "Yeah, it's a terrible look it was the terrible loss at the end of a terrible road trip in which they had started by getting swept in Tampa by the rays right at the trade. Socks were actually in first place when that series started. They lost first place for good that I believe they went to Detroit. And I think they lost two out of three. Two out of three. Yeah, and then I think they managed to come up with your honor they split the four game series. They lost three out of four, but just yeah, just they lost three out of four. Yeah. Yeah, the Sunday game that was a terrible loss. A terrible road trip. The Red Sox, look, they were on the brink of just falling apart. And they found a way, man. They found a way like they did all year to kind of get up off the now and they look like they were sinking and that's what I'm saying they did in Washington also. And they did it in this Tampa Bay series. So it's kind of a theme with this team. It's just their resilience. Well, I want everybody to do themselves a favor, especially if you're a Red Sox fan and follow Ian brown's coverage of the Red Sox as they advance to the 2021 American League championship series by virtue of a three games to one victory over Tampa Bay and the American League divisional series. "Funny, funny, though that this is happening, I enjoy I enjoy the trash talking and hopefully it motivates the White Sox to push this to 5 games because I think that would be a really, really electric game 5 on the road. And then, hey, maybe the Astros respond and say, yeah, we're just going to kick your ass at minute maid park and that's going to be that's going to be the fun part of it of it all. Yeah, I really, I really have nothing else to say about the Astros because they pissed me off and obviously I think they're going to cake walk into the ALCS and do I think the cheating is still happening? Probably not. Do I think maybe it could be? Sure. Everyone is saying like the core of that Astros team is gone from 2017. And I'm like, what are you talking about? Marwyn Gonzalez. Everyone's like, yeah, Alex Cora's gone. No, marwan Gonzales is there. He's right. Yeah. He went back there. So they're like, yeah, Alex core has gone, Carlos Beltran has gone, like all these guys are gone and Ryan McCann is gone. Having gaddis has gone, I'm just like, dude, they have Jose Altuve. They have Carlos Correia, marwin is back. They have Julie guriel. They have Alex Bregman. That's the core of their team. The core of their team, if you're just talking three players, is Altuve Correa and Bregman. And they've been there the entire time. So I don't know why anybody would think that, oh, okay, yeah. A few players left like the supposed ringleaders left in Alex Cora and Carlos Beltran. You think there's no influence left behind? Okay, great, then that's the worst logic that you could possibly put forth. I don't necessarily think they're continuing to do this, but I also would not be surprised if white socked players had a hunch that something was going on if they were relaying the fact that the Astros, the White Sox players were tipping pitches or whatever it may be for you to be surprised that that might be happening again is the joke's on you at that point..

"I think for the Red Sox to give the Tampa Bay Rays, all they can handle and have a chance to win the best out of 5 series. So it's funny. I was talking to Matt McCarthy from 98 5 of the sports club last night. And he brought up an interesting point that the Red Sox just on the way he's performed actually might be a better lineup without shady Martinez in. And obviously, you know, the discounts a few things there because he's a value part of the team. You want him around, but given kind of what they did at the deadline and the way their roster looks, it allows you to DH schwarber, which helps you defensively in the outfield that gets Kiki, Hernandez in the outfield. We saw last night, how important having KK Hernandez out there is for dugo misplaced that ball and left field in Hernandez stops that run from scoring by a lot and look, Phil Nevin shouldn't have sent Aaron judge, but they Hernandez in Bogart still made the play and that was another turning moment in that game. By the way, a quick PS, a PostScript to that play. Yes, it was probably a terrible decision by Phil Nevin to send Aaron judge on that play at the plate. The next play was a pop out the third base. He likely doesn't score and really what I think is going through Nevin's mind at that point and I don't think Alex Rodriguez was thinking of this when he criticized him and Vasquez in the same way. The Yankees were not hitting Nate of Aldi. They felt desperate. We need to get this second run in to put some pressure on avadi. That's why he was sent to the plate. Had the Yankees been showing the ability to work of Aldi, get that pitch count up. And we're hitting them all over Fenway Park. Different story. I don't think he does send them. But because they were struggling so badly, the Yankee offense was not getting anything out of anybody. I think that's why they decided to well that's why Nevin decided to send him. So that's a really interesting point actually, because if you go back, you watch that replay, neva never really looks at the ball. He's kind of just watching judge the whole time. Right. And I wondered why he did that. You know, you wouldn't, it's his job to kind of see where the play is at because the runner's not looking and let the runner know whether or not to go. And Nevin's not looking at the play. And I was like, am I looking at this wrong? Is he out of it? Did I miss something, but what you're saying now actually makes sense because he and his head knew he had to send him regardless of where the ball was. So that that would actually explain where he was looking. So that's a very interesting point. But yeah, you know, I thought that that, how did we get into this again? I thought that that was a turning point in the game. And yeah, so I mean that was maybe play in the game. So I think that there is inherent value when he comes back..

"Hey everybody, it is drags and this week we have a second special emergency edition of the Red Sox beat here on seal on us media. Of course, the Red Sox beat the New York Yankees 62 in the wild card game on Tuesday night before a raucous crowd of 38,000 at Fenway Park to discuss it all. And yes, look ahead to the American League divisional series with the Tampa Bay Rays. I welcome back old friend Alex birth of 98 5, the sports hub, follow him on Twitter at real Alex barth all one word. Pretty entertaining game I'd say for Red Sox fans on Tuesday night beginning in the first inning with the two run Homer by Xander bogarts. Wouldn't you say Alex? Yeah, I enjoyed it. I think, you know, from a fan point of view, it was what you look for where there was just enough drama and nervousness to make you feel alive, but not quite enough to never became too scared to handle. And I mean, we'll get into it. You know, when he took of all the out there when core took of all the out there and I know he'd given up a couple of hits, but he's pitching well and you think, uh oh, this we've seen this before. This decision has come back to haunt managers and, you know, kind of scooted to the end of your seat a little bit, but besides that, I don't know that there was ever too much doubt on the Red Sox fans part. I think that Matt Vasquez and what's his name down there in New York, they had their moments of especially there in the first and not a rod, no. Their Yankees radio announcer. Oh, God. John Sterling. I don't know if you saw the clip. I didn't know the first inning. Oh, you haven't seen that? I need to go back and watch it. Do you want to start right here? I mean, I'll tell you. So you saw that surgeon, right where he thought that ball stand hit in the first thing was our home run. Yes. Yes. I know exactly what you were talking about. And to be honest, I'm like, oh my goodness, that is a bomb. It's gone. And I think everybody was fooled, including Mike Stanton himself, right? Yes. And by the Carlos Stanton. This is a means of having our our right and left brains communicate. The creative side, as well as the analytical side. We know that there is reciprocal process of learning through handwriting and students, um, understanding their letters and sound correspondents and also how, when you're able to allegedly right and have those foundational skills that transfers over into fluency with writing. Those are sounds from Wisconsin today. State Senator Joan Ball wagon. Walkinshaw School District spokeswoman Melissa Yeah, They're talking about a bill that would require students in Wisconsin public schools to learn Cursive writing. I think that's something that's come up in Indiana as well. I'm not sure about here here. We're too busy studying social studies and imprison Chicago City Alderman John Sydell is writing about the latest indictment fragment for the Chicago Sun Times and Joins us now, John, welcome. Hi. Thanks for having me. Okay. So Carrie Austin and her chief of staff indicted today. What do the feds say? She did. Well, what it boils down to is basically kickbacks in the form of home improvements at her home in a rental properties of her chief of staff in exchange for helping developer who was working on a project in her Award and in exchange that developer was allegedly trying to influence her and With the kitchen cabinets. Her chief of staff was granted countertops. Uh, there's some pumps and dehumidifiers. Uh, those those are the latest, the latest items here. So it all amounts to bribery conspiracy that let's say it sounds to me like they risk quite a lot for not that much. And you know, it's unfortunately that's a pattern you see in when the When the feds bring indictments like this every time and time again, we find ourselves thinking, man. You really rest your Your career and your freedom for this, And it's interesting to in that she and Ed Burke are the two most senior members of the City Council. They both are under indictment. Now one of the most junior, I think would be Patrick. Daley Thompson, right. He is the third of the sitting in Alderman indicted. Uh, yeah, that's correct. I'm not exactly sure where all them and Thompson ranks and seniority. But, yeah, I mean, so the so the two longest serving members of the City Council or are facing federal charges, Edberg is facing racketeering charges That's been pending for quite some time. And Patrick Daley Thompson is charged in connection with this, uh Uh, fried alleged fraud scheme at a bank in Bridgeport. So you know, Burke had been under indictment for a few years now, but now we're seeing things heat up. It's only a couple months ago.
