"They're kind of like trucks, but they're very, very powerful, nicely made. The latest ThinkPads are extremely thin and light. So I also like Lenovo's ThinkPads. I looked at HP, which makes them very nice, the HP X 360 is very nice. But here's another thing I always started to think about. With all these manufacturers, Intel's latest generation processor is the 12th generation. They call it Alder Lake, but you'll more likely see 12th generation. And Intel has done some interesting things with the new processor. Inspired, I think, by competition from Apple with its M1. These new processors have both performance cores and efficiency cores, which means better battery life, but performance when you need it. And apple's done really well with its own silicon these M1 chips. This is Intel's attempt to compete. So then I thought, well, maybe I should get a 12th generation. That's narrows it down a lot because these are very new processors. They only came out at the beginning of the year. You don't have a huge number of choices. I ended up going to Dell. And getting an XPS laptop. How big is the screen that you want? Actually, I have two I think there are 24 27 inch screen. Well, this is an a laptop then. This is a desktop. Well, I can't I can't plug my oh, yeah, I see what you're saying. You want an external monitor. Oh, yeah. So you don't really care what the laptop has. No. No, no, as far as the screen goes. Okay. So Dell makes the three different sizes of the XPS. There's a 13 of 15 and a 17. I'd stay away from the 17. You obviously don't need a giant one. The 13 is interesting, but a little weird. I ended up buying a Dell 15 inch. I feel like that's a good compromise. They have the newest versions, the 2022 versions have the 12th generation Intel processors. I got an I 5, not an I 7. To save money. And I think for 1500 bucks, I've got a very nice 15 inch laptop. You can add more memory, I would at least get 16 gigs. That's going to add a hundred bucks. That's what I was going to ask. Since I'm buying a new machine, should I bump it up to 32? Yeah, if you do photos, you're using Photoshop and lightroom. Yeah. Those like a lot of memory. So you bump it up to 32. I think that's 20. You might want to get a larger hard drive at terabyte or two, but I think a terabyte is good for most people. Yeah. I think these Dell personally, this is what I put my money. It's a Dell XPS 15, and I really was interested. Now, these are new processors. So there aren't any reviews yet. One of the reasons I wanted to get it is because I wanted to review it for you. But I have high confidence from looking at the few reviews I've seen that these are much improved in terms of both performance and battery life. So I think this is a kind of a beautiful light thin laptop with good performance and under $2000. Okay, can I ask you another question? Sure. Can this store or can I run anti virus software on my old machine before I copy everything over? Sure. In fact, you don't even have to buy it. You can do it online, go somewhere like antivirus dot com, which is trend.

New matrix extensions also come into play along with data streaming accelerators, quick assist technology, all built on the latest P core designs currently present in the Alder Lake desktop platform. Albeit optimized for data center use, which typically means AVX 5 12 support and bigger caches. We already know that versions of sapphire rapids will be available with HBM memory and the first customer for those chips will be the aurora supercomputer at argonne national labs, coupled with the new Ponte vecchio high performance compute accelerator. The launch of sapphire rapids is significantly later than originally envisioned several years ago, but we expect to see the hardware widely available during 2022 built on Intel 7 process node technology end quote. Also, Intel says it's discrete arc GPUs for laptops, will ship in Q one 2022, arc GPUs for desktops will ship in Q two and arc GPUs for workstations will ship in Q three. Quoting the verge. Intel has quietly announced a new upcoming service for its arc GPUs, project endgame, which will allow customers to stream access to Intel's graphics cards for end quote, always accessible low latency computing experience end quote. The exact mechanisms here aren't totally clear, but it sounds like Intel will allow customers to rent GPUs in the cloud or even a full fledged front end gaming service like Nvidia's GeForce now subscription. There are almost no details yet on project endgame, including things like what kind of GPU access it will give customers how much it'll cost or whether it will even be a gaming focused product. But Intel is saying that it'll arrive sometime later this year. So we'll presumably find out more. The fact that Intel is planning some sort of cloud streaming service is also the latest sign of confidence that the company has in its discrete GPUs.

"Welcome back to fast money. We've got another earnings alert Intel's on the move after reporting earnings a call kicked off at the top of the hour. John Ford is listening in got the latest. Hey John. Hey Melissa yeah, it is on the move. It's been moving between plus and minus negative plus and minus a half a percent after hours. Pat gelsinger on the call kicking it off saying that they're heading into 2023 looking at incremental improvement there. He talked about the IDM two strategy that what's happened so far affirms that it is right and reaffirmed that in 2024 they expect their manufacturing process to be at leadership and in 2025 design will be. Now, the stock did pop a bit after hours when he said that they are on or ahead of schedule on process technology. He did go on to talk about raptor Lake, a new chip that they have booted in the labs that follows on Alder Lake and he talked about the ark graphics chips delivering in volume later this quarter. So all of that going on, he's saying the strategy is on track. And that he does expect this year to be better than last, but still investors are looking for execution execution and looking ahead to this Analyst Day that Intel is going to have where he's going to detail more on exactly how that should happen, also. All right, John, thanks for the latest on Intel. We'll have pat gelsinger on tech check tomorrow morning. For not to say that, that's important. I was going to mention it because I knew that you had forgotten it or got the wrap or something, but yeah, that's an interview we won't want to miss. Pat Gauss and your tomorrow tech check. Thanks John. Steve Grasso, do you like Intel? I mean, in this world of value versus growth, the Intel could fall in the value bucket and still got a catalyst ahead. So Intel definitely falls in the value bucket. It's underperformed for the last year to the likes of an AMD or an Nvidia. It's also outperformed on a relative basis. It's gone down less in the last month, three months. But when you look at, when you look at it onshore, is something that they're going to be ahead of the supply chain on. They're the first ones or they're the latest ones to do that in a big way, but do people want their chip versus the other chips that are out there. You have to ask yourself that question. Then technically, the hundred day moving average has been resistance on the stock that's around 56 and a quarter. Stock is trading at 51. Let's call it 52. So you're upside has been limited. That's been resistant since August of last year. Tim? Well, I want to hear pat gelsinger and I have a lot of confidence in this man who's put the pedal to the metal in terms of CAPEX spend. It's an arms race out there in foundry between Taiwan semi Samsung Intel and got some room to catch up. Their CAPEX is a function of infrastructure build out equipment, new plants, and we definitely want to hear more about Ohio. There's talk of 20 billion in CAPEX there. The fact that they're sapphire rapids chip is online is great. And, you know, again, their next generation release, the valuation that ten 11 times trailing, I think the forward is a little tougher. And frankly, I think they're getting a little bit of a benefit of the doubt at this point because I think we really do need to hear where we're going to be in 23 24. And it almost is the linear relationship between the spend and where I think people are going to begin to target earnings out that far. All right. We are just getting.

"My pleasure. Yeah, worth waiting. I always the standard caveat. You never know with Apple. They don't tell me or anybody ahead of time. All we have is the rumor mill, which is a varying accuracy. Here's what we do know. Apple has moved to their new Apple silicon platform. Which are fantastic, especially for portable computers because they give a lot of performance at a much lower power curve that means better battery life cooler operation. Better sustained throughput lots of benefits to that. In addition, they're doing some very interesting things. Apple has an advantage, no other computer manufacturer has. Because they make the operating system, but they also make all the hardware now that they make all the chips, they can integrate them very tightly so that they, for instance, one of the things a lot of pros want to do and maybe even people like you and me want to do with their max is playback high quality video. Instead of putting more horsepower in the general purpose CPU or even in the GPU, Apple now builds in what they call ProRes, that's their standard format for video. ProRes encoder and decoder in silicon. It's a separate little thing. It doesn't slow your computer down. It's doing all the work of playing it back. Means you can play back very, very high quality video without slowing the computer down at all. It just offloads that. That's something they could do because they control it all and they know what Mac pro users especially want to do or trying to do. I think this next generation of max, I don't know what the designation will be. The current. Generation is M1, and then there's the M1, the M1 pro and the amount max. M twos will be probably this spring and summer will be M twos. They will be based not on the a 14 chip, which is what they were putting in iPhones and iPads a couple of years ago. But on the current a 15 chips, those chips are better. They're more efficient. But then what they're doing on the desktop is they're giving you a lot of other capabilities. They don't build into the mobile devices. So more GPUs, more CPUs. I think you're going to start to see the power end of the Apple line. We have only seen the low end. In the first year of M1, neck this year is going to be the year we'll see. iMac pros, Mac pros and Mac mini prose. So if you're into Macintosh and you want to get a new Mac and you want, especially if you want it to last for 8 years, you're definitely going to want to get Apple silicon. And I suspect it would be worth waiting a couple of months to see what they can do. I have every expectation that these will be just as last year's were mind bogglingly good. I have an M1 pro MacBook Pro 14 inch MacBook Pro, I got I don't know a few months ago. And it's blazingly fast. It's incredible. And performance battery life, it's cool and they fans ever come on. I mean, what they're doing is really remarkable, and I can't wait to see what they do in the desktops. So probably is worth waiting if you're a Mac fan. "This is the non vaporware segment. Yeah. This is the nuts and bolts of computing segment. And we're going to start with stuff that hasn't shipped yet. Folding oled laptop. Actually, I'm going to do this a little bit out of order from what we had. We should start with the chips and then move to the laptops that may have some of these chips, right? What do you want to do in teller AMD? Until? All right, so 12th, Jen, Alder Lake chips. These are important, I think, because, you know, most people assume they want to get an Intel laptop, even though AMD is our charging. And Intel is making gigantic claims for these that they are more powerful than the M1 max on the MacBook pros, which maybe they are if you have a nuclear power plant nearby. They didn't say much about battery life is what I'm getting at. And there are power draw. But, you know, like the story with Intel and it has been for a while now, what are they back? What are they going to start really, really getting back in the game and pushing? And maybe this is like the possible start of that? I don't know, what do you think? I feel like no. Because the only ones they announced they announced laptop processors, but it's only the 45 watts. I think 45 watts, the H series processors. And that's usually the stuff you find in workstations in gaming laptops. That's not like the giant game. Yeah. When we start seeing the Y series and new series and all of the other stuff that actually appears in laptops that most people buy, then I'll be like, okay, they're serious. And when it's as good as the M1. Yeah. Well, the other thing that until talked about was the GPUs, but no actual updates there. So like Intel getting into the GPU, here we go. Now, let's just keep waiting for that, I guess. I think they announced more OEMs. We're going to use them. Was that the plan? This is like the third CES in a row where they're like GPUs. GPUs. Nope. Not happening today. Sorry. Although, to be fair, that's not too far from what Nvidia is doing with his GPUs in terms of your ability to get one. It is probably easier to get an Intel GPU right now than 30 80. TI or T depending on how you want to pronounce it. It has no official recommendation. It's supposed to be titanium, right? No, they officially said this week. There is no official pronunciation, say it however you want. Yeah. That's good. I like that. You have to use the letters T or I it could be Nvidia 30.

"I don't blame you. I'm going to recommend. Some people might yell at me, but I am a fan of alienware. I have the alienware desktops. They make laptops too. Alienware is Dell's gaming division. So they're essentially Dell laptops, but they have styling and more importantly hardware designed for gaming. What makes gaming work continue do? Pardon me? How much customization do they allow? All you want. In fact, when you go to Dell and you look at the early wear laptops, you will see choices of processor, choices of video cards. One of the things that makes these gaming laptops is they have what we call discrete graphics processing units or discrete GPUs, they offer the RTX 30 80, which is the mobile version of the high end graphics card. And if you're willing to spend $4566 or 79 cents, you could get 64 gigs of ram, four terabyte storage is 17 inch display, a G force RTX 30 80 video card and an I 9 processor. That's a pretty sweet gaming machine. It's not desktop yet. We were talking about this earlier in the show. Thermal considerations are what keep laptops from being as fast as desktops. Thermal and power. They just can't run as fast because they just get too hot. They don't have as much cooling. But by the way, they range. I'm not forcing you to buy a $5000 laptop. You can get well under 2000 if you want. I'm open to it. And the reason why I'm okay with it is because I'm buying my wife a tougher line MacBook Pro. Oh, isn't she lucky? You know, kids are tapped. That's a $4000. What does she do? She is a graphic designer. Yeah, she needs it. She needs it. Do you still code at all or are you kind of retired? I definitely code, still. All right. Mainly. I made it in Windows lens. I do some iPhone development, but mainly I'm sure developer. So these will also be excellent machines for C, your compilation will be very, very fast. They have lots of ram, fast processors. I think these are a good way to go. Now, one thing I should mention is that Intel's Alder Lake processors are now out. And these are the latest Intel. I don't know if they're calling it 12th generation. But the latest generation of Intel, they are slowly making their way into computers. They just came out, yeah, they're calling it 12th generation..

This is the second generation of that is the third generation of its ten nanometer tech. And that'll be out later this year. So that's until seven okay. Ten nanometer superfan. No no ten nine meter. Super thin is now is tiger lake okay. Intel seven is the third generation ten nanometer. Which is alder lake. Okay coming out at the end of this year. Intel four is the or what was previously the architecture. The artists previously known as intel seven nanometer intel four which was originally supposed to be out at the end of two thousand twenty one and will now be coming out in early twenty twenty three with meteor lake with production starting in the second half twenty twenty two. They've already locked in a few things and there aren't going to be big jumps at that like. That's the big jump that tells been waiting to do so. They're saying like a twenty percent jump in performance per watt which is not inconsiderable and cutting down on overall area. The chip like it will be a big jump when it comes it will feature much much higher transistor density than even tsmc's current five nanometer node. So it will be a very interesting piece of technology when it comes in another year and a half. Hopefully we're running out of numbers. Now we are running out of numbers until threes the second generation of centimeter products. So it's the second generation of what would have been the seven nanometer one. It is actually also promising. A roughly eighteen percent increase in performance for four. So it's a talk in that it's the second generation thing but it will also have a fairly big jump. Intel is expecting manufacturing in the second half of twenty twenty three and it will be available in two thousand twenty four. Probably haven't put a date on that yet. Now as neil. I had pointed out. We are running out of numbers here so these numbers are not really standing for anything you notice. They're not until three nanometer. They're not reclassifying that because again the numbers as they stand right now. Don't actually stand for anything. There's no five nanometers seven nanometer transistors. On these chips that said until the next nation after until three is not until two but until twenty eight lot we had we really had to lay down the groundwork so let me let me give you a bit of an explanation. So the twenty. Eight intel twenty eight is meant to evoke the angstrom era of semiconductor design long so angstrom unit of measurement that is smaller than nanometer. Twenty angstrom equivalence to two nanometers. Now this is not a two nanometer scale thing nor is it standing for twenty angstrom. It is just meant to evoke that. It's so it's a no any type of company just jumps its numbering system to twenty. You know that they've given up samsung with the s. Twenty th you know what whatever it's twenty now we know it will always be bigger than the iphone number all joking aside though this is probably going to be the biggest jump in intel's chips and like twenty five years and like but it's going to happen twenty five years from now not twenty five years in like ten fifteen years it's their i knew transistor architectures and finn fat. Which is the basic technology that every major transistors been using since twenty eleven. So this is the next really big jump forward other using something called ribbon fat which is an alternate all around transistor. It allows for greater transistor density smaller sizes. They're doing a lot of interesting stuff. Technically or are planning on it. It'll be out sometime in twenty twenty four or twenty twenty five. Hopefully ramping is two thousand. Twenty four it'll probably be harbor. You can buy in twenty twenty five hopefully assuming that none of the delays that have plagued the company for the last ten years pop up wait twenty eight hundred twenty s twenty eggs firms or two nanometers..

AMD Is NOT Ripping off Intel
"Topic. I can't remember what it is Yes amd is not ripping off intel. Allow me to explain. It would be easy to say. Oh hey wait. Hold on a second i mean. Amd's releasing a hybrid cpu. That just sounds a lot like intel alder lake which is the codename for their twelve generation courses processors which are going to use the us high performance golden cove course alongside power saving grace mont course with the idea being that you get performance when you need it and power saving when you don't but in fact intel is not the first one to have that idea and there's a whole lot else going on with their zen five architecture that has really nothing to do with what intel's doing so first things first then five will apparently be based on. Tsm's threes n three process. Node which i think they. They're just kinda changing up the nomenclature on us. I actually didn't know that they call them. Okay maybe they're not because they're referring to their seven nanometers and seven so. I've just never heard that branding for it before. Go figure so. Their entry process node is to full nodes away from current seven nanometer node with tsmc and has claimed to be one point seven times as dense as five nanometer which is itself one point eight times as dense as seven nanometer. And we're expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of a fifty plus percent Increase in power efficiency compared to seven nanometer. And wow so fifteen percent faster than fifteen percent faster. What would that. What would that be something like thirty five or so thirty five or so percent faster than seven nanometer as well now. Amdi

DDR5 Finally Arrives
"Standard was settled on years ago and some smaller manufacturers have released early products here and there but everyone was waiting for this to make official. Samsung has announced five hundred and twelve gigabyte. Ddr five memory chips still in the verification stage that deliver over twice the performance of ddr four at up to seven thousand two hundred mbps for advanced workloads. We are now officially in the ddr. Five era quoting hardware as we inch closer to intel's alder lake and md's zen architectures late this year and or early next year. Barring any delays memory makers started announcing advances in ddr five memory which will deliver a big increase in bandwidth. We've even seen some ddr. Five module launches samsung however has managed to separate itself from the pack on announcing. What it says is the industry's first. Five hundred twelve gigabyte memory module based on high k metal gate or hk mg process technology according to samsung. It's five twelve gigabyte. Ddr five memory module delivers more than twice the performance of ddr. Four add up to seven thousand two hundred megabits per second this. The company says will be beneficial for the most extreme compute hungry and high bandwidth workloads the five twelve gb capacity comes by way of stacking eight layers of sixteen gigabit d-ram chips. There's no mention of costs though. Samsung says it is currently sampling. it's five twelve. Gb modules to customers for testing and verification and
