"This is your last stop. I won't make that combing until my last through and this season. I told you that early in spring. I'm going to continue to say that the rest of the year until you know. This is over so i feel like i still some gasoline left and my tanking lady say. I'm really excited for this opportunity. Yeah i mean look. This is a very low risk deal for the dodgers yup. There's there's no. They've paid a bunch of money they don't they haven't sold the ranch for him in a trade. I mean it's it's a. It's a move now. I said it earlier said again. I think Albert pools at this point in his career. Guy was pop from time to time. I think he had hit four home. Runs for the angels. And he's a he's a two hundred hitter so if the dodgers are relying on him free significant role. I think that is a huge mistake huge mistake and by the way i think he's gonna. They're facing madison bumgarner. So a left. Tonight i'm guessing that it's jt third lux at short muncie second and pool holtz at first could be. I'm handed bat against the lefty. Yeah i'm trying to think k. Pollock bets we still don't have bellinger right. Don't her yet taylor ready yet. Yeah taylor he pinch hit yesterday. Pinch ran yesterday. He's expected to be available. He can play short or lux can play short. Yeah well i'm thinking. Forget him or or taylor could play center. Get him in the lineup. Just to get another right handed bat in their lineup. Should come out all around the air. Maybe we'll we'll see what happens that you're right. Who else could play tonight. Definitely could here is alden gonzalez. You haven't had many opportunities to pinch hitter throughout your career. How do you plan to prepare for a role like that. And what's it going to take. How do you prepare yourself mentally to do that more often. Now why think that's great because we me and that was part of docking andrew communication with me and i think how many game plan you know of while my role is going to be and this ballclub. You know this is. This is gonna be power my role than leasing. I'm going to embrace it. I'm gonna be ready. And i told him i'd be ready whether it's the day that i know play whether day that i felt that that there's my time tacoma tearing and try to help these ball club to win as it you know so i'm really excited and that's something that i have embraced really well and and like i say i'm enjoying the opportunity in going to try to have fun. Yeah rooting for the guy you know. They do need a right handed. Bat a right handed. Power bat is great for them. But i think third his position. Where with seger out at short you move. You move muncie to second and then you can platoon pool holes and the new guy. They got from tampa yoshi go. At first base. He'll he'll play gets the writings and pools and play against lefties if they decide to go that way with luxa shortstop or they flex flex continues to struggle at the plate. You could play taylor at short yup and play months second and then do your platoon. It i it gives you options then moves to center and you've got to fill right field we know i'm assuming bellinger's coming back at some point. Yeah bellinger supposedly bellinger and mckinstry are both on the verge of rehab assignments. Okay so if you get bellinger back then you're outfield's gonna mckinstry to figuring this logging everywhere right at second or short. Yeah exactly so. It's close to be in the meantime. I dunno i'll i'll root for albert. I'm not if i hopes. But i'll root for him. Meanwhile i was talking eight. Seven seven seven ten. Espn on on any of this stuff. So i saw a little video this weekend. Or i guess it was happening during the game on saturday With joe davison and an oral clayton. Kershaw has the ability to hold six baseballs in his hand at the same time. Really think about that for a second. I don't even say it could do four six. Baseballs i've been sitting here trying to do six golf balls and i can't do six golf balls. He's doing six. Baseballs that is crazy. He's got have just gigantic hands and unbelie. You don't wanna get hurt doing this but you gotta gigantic hands. I think to be able to do that. It's impressive it's impressive. Six baseballs i wanted to get to this before we before and by the way we've got radio tinder coming up for you. There's a company called fuel. Stir have you heard of fuel. Stor heard that name. But i can't remember what it does. So they come to your house and they fill up your gas tank now. Is that a service. People need me not to cry. Look i'm sure there are wonderful. And i know they're probably people use them all that stuff but would you ever have somebody come to your house and fill up your gas tank. I now remember the context in which i heard of fuel star. They were offering to provide that service at dodger stadium which i thought made perfect sense in other words. You drive to the ballpark. You don't have any gas or you've gotta stopping gasoline wave home. You just download the fuel stir app you tell them what section your car is. And that's a good play now. You have to have a fairly new car so they can get into your car that you can unlock it. And when i heard that i.

"Albert also called eight super bowls and eight stanley cup finals. He turned eighty next month. Wow do you want to work until your eighty fair question john. I'm sort of thinking about the future as we go along here. And i anticipate that i will keep doing my podcast for the rest of my life i need. I need to have something going on. I need to have action. I need to be doing something. I am never going to be a lay around guy like my dad was a big. He retired at the age of fifty. And then just laid around and wilted away. I am not going to be that guy. I am gonna go and go and go and go. I'm going to travel. I'm gonna do my podcast. I'm gonna have fun. When i'm eighty so i look at these jobs that we have like doing this show and my job doing the laker games and i look at them like that. You've caught a great wave agreed. And you just write it until the wave wiped shout. Yep so and marv albert kept writing these these. Great waves chick hearn. Work till he was. I think eighty three vin work till he was like eighty nine. Yup i think you ride the wave until it kicks you out now. We would be incredibly lucky to right away that long. And i don't i don't imagine in the current jobs were in that we can but i think you ride the waves when people give you a platform you ride the waves until they crashed on you and then you go from there so i'm not putting an age on it. I think you just play the cards as their dealt and see what you do. I mean i'm trying to create my own way for when when this eventually. You know years down the line. We we stopped this because at some point we'll be so sick of each other will have to go back. Maybe next month you never know could be could be next week all right. The the pac twelve has a new commissioner. His name is jorge climaco off and among the what we actually don't have time for this and we'll get bad man. Yeah i was gonna say. I have one about climate. We'll do those tomorrow. We'll do this tomorrow. Okay all right coming up next for you again. The lakers wednesday night gigantic showdown with golden state. One game play in. Remember if the lakers happen to. And i don't believe they will if they happen to lose that game. They'll play the memphis san antonio winner for the eight seed if they beat golden state there the seven seed and they will get phoenix in the first round after watching this team this weekend. How do you feel about it. I mean i actually put this out on twitter and got a few hundred responses said. What's your mood about this team. What's your mood about this team. John what actually hold it. What's your mood about. This team is a good question. Seven seven seven ten. Espn eight seven seven seventeen. Espn will will get some of your calls in. Plus i'll tell you about something. Clayton kershaw can do that. I don't think anybody else can. That's coming up mason ireland seventeen. Espn so you probably saw this over the weekend. Or maybe not. Albert pool has signed a contract for the rest of the season with the dodgers. He was cut from his forty million dollar deal from the angels and now playing for like four hundred thousand for the dodgers for the rest of this year right handed bat off the bench. Although is just saying. I think he might be in the starting lineup today. Just a hunch on my part because they're facing madison bumgarner but albert rules did media just a little while ago Let's hear What he had to say first of all of this. Oh i think this is all our friends. Bill plunkett and envelope latchkey. Here's bill you respect the angels decision but it did it shock you the way. It happened in win eappen. What a check. I think everybody but at the end of the day you know feeling at all you know i'm here with this organization and about his opportunity and like i say you know i'm not the only player last player. They're probably going to go through this. So i'm just decided to get another opportunity. And the dodgers has given me the opportunity. And i wanna i think the front office andrew and dot forgive him this opportunity and believe in me That i can come here and help these ballclub to win. Here he is. Here's bill plunkett again. And i know you've been reluctant to say anything about retirement but Are you ready to say.

"I want to speak up for robert ory to be inducted into the hall of fame. Election gary player. He made so many clutch shots. He's got seven rings to prove it. This is where he belongs. So he's right. Robert ory seven rings to with tom janna in houston three was shacking. Kobe and the lakers. And two more with the spurs. He hit more big shots than almost anybody in playoff history but mace never made it all nba team. Never even an all-star yeah go ahead. Should robert ory be in the hall of fame Yeah he should. I mean he was a tremendous role player. I love him by the way. I love him on access sports net and all that stuff but he his career scoring average is seven points per game. I understand he made unbelievably big shots. But can you really have a guy in the hall of fame who averaged seven points and five rebounds a game for his career. He only scored in double figures three times in his career in his first season his age. Twenty two season age. Twenty four season is age. Twenty five season the only time he averaged double digits. I just don't think you can put them in the hall of fame. I think he can. And here's how the test for a hall of famer whenever you can't decide yes or no people always say. Can you tell the story of the nba without him. And i don't think he can. He hit too many big shots he hit. I mean think about the shot against sacramento the shut the it for houston the shatti for san antonio. He hit more big shots than anybody. It's kind of like if you look at joe. Namus career shirt joining. It wasn't a hall of fame quarterback based on his career statistics. He was very average. What he did was he called his own shot in nineteen sixty nine and just based on that getting the jets for the super bowl and winning it. He's in the hall of fame. I think robert is an extremely rare case of a guy who only showed up when you absolutely positively needed him. And that's how you get them in your your argument make sense to. There are a lot of guys with a with a better career list of achievements that you'd rank ahead of ori but i don't know anyone who made as many big shots and that's why i think you get them in by the way Nemeth twelve years and twenty seven thousand yards. He fell by today's standards. That's nothing but by standards. Those days he led the league in passing four times touchdowns compared to his interceptions. I think he may even had more interceptions than touchdowns. You're absolutely right. One hundred and seventy three touchdowns two hundred twenty or sexual but again a completely different era where. They didn't throw the ball a lot. Yeah but in the case of laurie i loved the guy. The big shots are indeed liable. Never the best player in his own team never a dominant player in his era. I just don't think he belongs in. The hall of fame agree to disagree. It's to you fast track. All right. John bob baffert. Who has now apologized for cheating at the kentucky. Derby says i don't know what the groom you know medina's spirits groom took cough syrup and then peed on the. Hey and that's why million very much. The dog ate my homework. Yes any finish third by the way at the preakness on saturday. No better than california and kentucky have filed. Two class action lawsuits against baffert accusing him of fraud racketeering negligence after medina spirit tested positive for beth tests zone. Yeah that's not right. But i'll just go with it in a post race drug test in the suit. The wagers of each player are outlined along with their potential winnings. If medina spirit hadn't finished. I by cheating the plaintiffs accuse baffert of repeated acts of illegal doping and entering horses into thoroughbred races in the state of california and elsewhere the plaintiffs allege that the behavior amounted to illegal gambling and or horse doping through a pattern of racketeering activity. John does this case. Have any merit. I think you know. Because i remember there been other cases where like the astros when they got accused of cheating. Several people tried to sue along similar lines similar case and i think you have to prove that they deliberately tried to defraud you in other words that that they were trying to bedford had a systematic plan to defraud betters. And i think that's a really hard thing to prove. It sounds to me like the case should go to trial but these cases always fall short. Because i think there's a legal definition that these guys can't come up with. Does that make sense. It does make sense. I don't think they have a case. But there is no question that bob baffert screwed a lot of people out of a lot of money i forget who manned allure was the horse that finished second in the kentucky derby so if i were sitting on a thousand dollar bet on mandolin for at fifteen two one i would be furious right now right. I would be furious. Because i had the winner so wait do anything about it. No no no no not legally not legally. But i mean i mean. They can't like the derby doesn't say okay well. This source is disqualified because he cheated so then the row as a matter of fact like mason mythical money bet but if that would have been a real bet mason gets to keep the money because they already paid it out. Yeah the already paid out. But if i walked into churchill downs right now with a winning ticket for mandel or would they pay now. Manda lor is the joe winner of the race..

"Might. I mean once soto is i mean. That's not. I mean if they get one soto. That's two really good dominican hitters as teammates. I mean for what it's worth. Pools has a ps of a One thousand one hundred and fifty three against the nationals which is the highest has against any team. So that's definitely a possibility but there are two their to stretches one Stretch includes the yankees if luke volts struggles to come back and another. Is the red sox. If bobby w can't make it work the diamondbacks for potentially a team there to a terrible star christian walker is as well their first baseman the rockies. Why not. but they're only three teams that really make that much sense at at all in their all teams which pools really already has a connection the white sox so the white sox they i mean. Tommy tommy larussa came out and said that he just doesn't have a place for him and that was a few days ago. I mean that was a little bit over a week ago. But now jose abreu's out and the white sox might need the they they might take this opportunity to have a fantastic and i need a fantastic job to get to get a really good replacement Four four him when he or four four bray you. I mean when while he while he's out and then it pulls those well vic benchley split time they can figure out a way that pufus can play other day whether it be they give their. Da german mercedes at night off or they give us a little bit more time to come back in. They don't rush him. That is definitely very good. Very very good spot. I mean there really isn't any good fit for him but german mercedes is right. He's he's a mazda right now he never walked but he's one of the best players in baseball I mean but a losing. A braille is a big big deal for the white sox. And i think a- getting pools right now is a very very very good idea for the white sox. Next is the royals and pools famously went to community college in kansas city and he has pretty good ties to the state of missouri. Obviously his Obviously with the cardinals being there as well And he's a former teammate. Of mike pechiney he definitely seems to share off the field sensibilities for the franchise and the ownership group. There's a clear full circle elementary pupils to join the team. If that one doesn't bite them the royals could occasionally scratched rich if I mean it would allow him to be a d. h. occasionally and also make one last trip to busch stadium and soak in love against the cardinals. But why don't we just kind of eliminate that middleman where he he's going to busch stadium and just have them go there. The arguments against pools going to saint louis aren't hard to make it all. There's no d. h. slot forum. They already have a amazing first baseman and goldschmidt and this is a team that is going to be in a fierce fierce playoff race at doesn't really have a margin to air. it would be sad to see holes. Hit one seventy eight anywhere but it would be definitely a lot harder to see him do it here. But i mean there isn't a cardinal's fan alive who saw play for saint louis. That doesn't want him seat doesn't want him to put or that doesn't want to not see him. Put that number on that number five uniform again it but right now the fit just really. Isn't there but we do have some news but real quick. I'm just going to give a little bit more background right here. So pool holes would be joining a team with adam wainwright and guardian molina who he has won. A couple of world series rings with as well as paul goldschmidt. Nolan are nada. Who were the sort of veterans. He's always thrived being around. And you don't think that those five guys just talking at the end of a dugout would be tangible in value but there definitely is. It isn't perfect. Situation for him for team has world series. Aspirations there has to be some value in the team's best clutch hitter of all time and non david freeze division. But know like he's one of these one of the best hitters. Don't ever play for the cardinals. And that is a very storied franchise and that means a lot. When you say something like that. I mean it's definitely kind of a bank shot. Definitely an uncomfortable situation at pools can hit it all. And you don't really wanna mess with the chemistry of the team. That has one of the best records in the national league right now and you have to also make sure that is very comfortable exclusively joining exclusively playing the nagara sake role and something that former manager joe maddon was sure he didn't like was sure pools didn't sound like he was. He was really up for yet. What some might say is a tough it other might consider fate aligning a pool. Cardinals story has one of the most perfect endings in in in. Probably i mean that's that's a storybook ending really is and the pools could end his career playing in a cardinals uniform for a team that wants to win a championship. And if the cardinals fans get a say you there. If cardinals fans are are listened to and they get say upper pools will absolutely be back in a cardinal. But like i said. I t's some news a second ago and as i'm recording this on saturday and i'm sure a lot of you have heard. The cardinals are legitimately considering bringing our pools holes. In right now now is a is in the works. Maybe maybe not in. Mlb network insider. John hayman tweeted that it might be a tough fifth with everyday star paul goldschmidt entrenched at first but new radio appearance on wednesday at one zero one. Espn saint louis cardinals. President build the width. The third said was asked about the cardinals potentially pursuing polls and he said quote. We've certainly had some internal conversations about it and of course. How could you not right. But i think right now. We really like where we are with the team. And i'd hate to take bats way from anybody right now. I think we still got people that want to see him to see what they're all about younger players etc. So i think right now. It's something that we really haven't entertained. I i think this is. If this was at the end of the season it might have been a different conversation and you never say never but right now here we are. Obviously upper. portholes was released on may sixth the as about thirty million dollars left on his deal but he did just pass through waivers. A report was made his debut with the cardinals in two thousand one one. Nl rookie of the year has won mvp honors in two thousand five hundred eighty nine for the nfl and helped the cardinals win. Two world series rings after the cardinals topped the rangers and twenty eleven the first baseman of went and signed with the signed one of the biggest deals in baseball at that time with the angels. His production obviously is declined over recent years and he has a six twenty two overs. I twenty four games a before he was released. He's thirty. Three home runs away from becoming the fourth player. To seven hundred home runs and history and he's one of six players with a five hundred plus home runs at least three thousand hits joining hank. Aaron alex rodriguez willie mays rafael romero. And eddie murray. He's definitely a really really good It's it's a really good possibility and the cardinals so Disregard What i believe everything. I literally said because Apparently this is from cbs. This is from j. anderson.

"Guy can command their fastball. Like jacob degrom the best pitchers degrom and trevor bauer arsenal breaking pitches But because those pictures are such rarities the game has moved toward the ones that value power pitching over like anything else so the finesse pitchers and pitchers who made their living off precision Like precision location seem to kind of be a thing of the past right now except for guys like wade miley. That's that's another guy that that some teams could potentially go out and get as wade miley From the red. Sorry it just kind of hitting like hit me in the face right there that i didn't think about wade miley in the reds Of those hard throwers are not locating high-velocity fastballs and three. Mvp candidates have been lucky enough to avoid serious injury. This year a kunia was hitting left. Hand might trout was hitting the elbow and bryce harper was drilled in the face by by a ninety seven mile an hour fastball. And i mean it. Obviously that's not something he meant to do. But it's it's something that is kind of apparent right now in baseball is that guys are definitely going to sort of forget about the not forget about location but they just don't have as much control as guys used to have in a scary sequence cabrera a twenty four year old Genesis cabrera the twenty four year old harper in the face and wrist and then hit didi gregorius in the back with ninety five with a ninety four mile. An hour heater. He clearly didn't know where the ball was going to go. Harbored obviously Did forgive cabrera and it was clear that the picture was just super rattled as well. Because if you've seen the video as soon as he sees where that ball was he's hands just go up and he is terrified of what just what he just through. And that that i think is something that is super important to seed Because at least at least everybody knows now that it's not tinged that that is not intentional. And th i mean but not everybody is going to be as as forgiving as bryce harper. And not everyone is going to be as In in potentially it might be. It might be something that actually is. Is something relatively serious or there might be underlying issues like for example. If i can almost guarantee that that the reds and the cardinals will get into at least one more scuffle this year. And if if it's because a jesse winker or toddler aikman pimple home. Run or something And then the next time out they get hit and then amir garrick is on the mound again and he hit somebody else and then he tries to fight the entire cardinals or bench again. I that that's definitely something that can happen. So it i. I don't think that this is really a bold. Take at all. But i definitely think that it. It's going to be a fun. Baseball season does to say the very least so right year. We're just gonna after this quick break. We're going to give a brief albert pools update and then go over some signings and trades. That have happened so far. This season want to know the latest and soccer. That listen to the golden state media concept soccer podcasts from m. l. as the world the premier league we've got you covered a latest update hottest matches news on the league's top players. It's the golden state media concept soccer. Podcasts i listen. Dan and welcome back to the final segment of today's episode of the gs. Mcc baseball podcast. So albert pools has officially. He has officially cleared waivers and that was kind of obvious nobody was going to pick him up for thirty million dollars especially his production rate is right now but since since then and since he was released there is a fantastic opportunity for him to go and play in a couple of places So we're gonna just real quick go over a few teams. That could definitely improve if they were to add pools number. Five is the cleveland indians and they definitely could use all of the offense that they could get aside from jose ramirez. The cleveland indians really aren't hitting very. Well they have one of the lowest Runs scored in in the league granted. They are fortunate to have one of the best pitching staffs in the league as well so if they could definitely get him and then potentially have From your race at the as the da jr and then having having poodles and Jake bowers as a sort of rotation at first base. It would make a little bit of sense but again this is basically on the ideal on the idea that our pools is willing to take a backseat role which might which the heaving this kind of a a big assumption for somebody who's su who at least used to be a superstar and if he is looking to drop into a really tough division race that would be a great fit for him at four is the washington nationals and this has some sort of implosion in potential Because the natural kind of in last place they have a a record similar to the angels. It's possible that they are going to be sellers at the deadline and it's hardly a situation that our ripples really wants to be in but if you're looking for a team that has definitely shown willingness to take veteran players and veteran bats trying to get a lightning trying to get lightening strike before they have to some difficult decisions to make the nationals or definitely team. Do that josh bell. Right now is really struggling for the nationals. At first base and he struggled against lefties his entire career in the national the nats definitely some kind of a jolt and that could be pools..

"Grinky is doing awesome And i mean they're the one thing that they have to have an on is is their bullpen. And they i mean. They're hoping is just awful if they can get Pedro baya's bag and blake. Taylor i mean from the injured list. That would definitely help but right now. It's just they're pitching is just not doing great right now and i mean it's very possible at the end of the year of the astros are really in a tough playoff race. That ver- lander might come back at. That's that's very possible. It's a very real possibility and would love to see that. At number nine they have tampa bay rays. I don't necessarily love that one. Save obey is right now. They're twenty one and nineteen. But i don't hate either. Glass now is is pitching amazing I mean but like ready rose. Iranian is is not having a great year right now. He's having a huge sophomore slump. And i don't know really what to do with that at number eight though we have. They have listed at the oakland athletics. Oakland obviously is in the midst of a very tough season. They had started off awful but they have definitely bounced back. Sean monnaie has three oh seventy. Ra a one point three war. He's doing great so far this year. And that's what they that's what they need their twenty four and sixteen have sole possession of first place right now and what is actually a pretty tough division in the al west with Number seven they have the san francisco giants. I would not put the giants here there in the first place been in first place for a while. I would throw the dodgers here. More fat or faster than i would. But the giants their the dodgers. I like i mean they. They're just not playing well. they're they have won three straight and they're starting to come back but right now i would have to put the dodgers at number seven instead of the giants and then at number six. They have the padres. I don't like i actually kinda liked that. Take because they did lose f- a lot of people in one day they lost fernando. Tatis junior wil myers air costumer jackson pro far and or Matteo for a covid list rent in covid reasons and that's that's not good for them but they're still they still won the other day against saint louis so that's a really good win for them. I think they would be higher a lot higher especially if they had all of those guys but so far it doesn't seem to really hurt them at number five. They have the yankees. I i kinda like that. Take with the yankees Putting them at number five because they're pretty close to boston. They're really they've been really hot. They're seven and three of their last. Ten and giancarlo stanton is performing very well while garrett cool continues to make a case for his another four. Al cy young at number four. They have the cardinals the cardinals. I don't know if i would necessarily put this high. They do have a. They are tied for second in wins in the league right now with white. The shadow white sox in san francisco Boston has one more win right now than them. I i don't hate. I don't hate this at all. The one thing i want. The cardinals to do though is sign our pools that i think needs to happen at number three. I'm gonna put the boston red sox. That's where they have the dodgers. I have the red sox still at number three there. They have the best record in all of baseball right now. But it's i. I don't i don't know i i. I just think that there are teams. That are a little bit better than them. A little bit hotter than them at number two. I'm putting the san francisco giants. They have the boston red sox at two. I'm putting the giants there. Because alex would could barely find a role last year on the dodgers team in this year. He has a one eighty. Era you have guys like Anthony scalia who balling out. Buster posey's during well branded belts doing well brandon. Crawford's doing well. it's amazing. The giants are doing awesome this year. It's it's so they're so fun to watch and then at number one. I agree with their pick as for the white sox. The white sox are currently in first place in the central by a game and a half. They are also eight and two out of their last ten and they're just doing really well. There's playing really good baseball right now. And this is what a lot of people expected them to do. So that's gonna end this first segment for guys or second segment. We're gonna be right back with some like reactions to some bowl. Takes.

"Future like playoff run. I think they're they're doing things right over there. And i think that they're setting themselves up to have a fantastic fantastic year at number eighteen. They have the reds the reds rate. Now are seventeen and nineteen when they made this list. They were seventeen and seventeen. The and i i'm instead i'm going to put I'm gonna put. I gonna put tampa bay their tampa bay right now. I mean they are playing better. But i the reds i got we got to put them lower the reds they. They're just not playing. Well actually. I don't know if i would put the cubs they're actually. I would put the cubs there because the cubs are eight. Just a half game better right now than the reds but they are playing better baseball right now than the reds and that is a huge factor at the six sixty four out of their last ten whereas the reds are and five the cubs. Like they're going to be winning games and red's just aren't right now and that's that's just is what it is. I mean but injuries have definitely hurt the cubs so far this year. Matt duffy has like he just hasn't been playing really. I mean he's been playing. Okay but dr. Peterson is finally starting to get high but guys like have. Your bias. hadn't played very much this year. Kris bryant has missed a few games of allergies and stuff and i mean kris bryant when kris bryant on that is such a boost to the cubs. But he's it just. They're just having a hard time getting back to where they are and number sixteen they have the ranked the phillies. The phillies are seven and three out of their last. Ten republicans gins is off in. Okay start this year. He's producing some numbers but he's making a lot of outs right now. His swing rate and a strikeout rate are both up and he just feels like he's trying to press a little bit and but overall i i like where the phillies are at right. Now i mean there's number two in in their their rankings. I wouldn't put the phillies here. I'll put maybe a team. Like i'd probably put the braves here. Maybe just because they're eighteen and twenty instead of the philadelphia phillies who are twenty one eighteen. But also you could probably put a team like milwaukee here who is lost two straight. They are three and seven out of their last ten. I so that's that's what i that. That's just what i think atlanta at number fifteen see. I would've switched these two. The braves are playing very well right now and they're starting to claw back into this. You know this absolute mess of a division. And so i i i i like where the phillies are at right now. More so than i like where the braves rat and i mean. They're just just don't think that they're where they could be. Is is is really the best best. Take i think for for that. The brewers they have them listed at number fourteen see. I think that you could get any kinda way with these candidacies with with all three of those teams the brewers are twenty and nineteen when they made this ranking twenty and seventeen christian. Yelich still isn't back just yet but corbin burns's back in. That should definitely help. It's just they're just not doing great. They have one of the worst offense in baseball right now. it's they're just not doing well they. They've only scored one hundred and forty two runs this year like any any team has a comparable amount of games played has scored by significantly more than that like The dodgers the dodgers are a bad example because their offense is really good but they've scored a hundred and ninety six runs so far this year and milwaukee's only scored one hundred and forty two The team that they're only three games back from in for first place is has scored almost thirty or thirty. They've scored thirty two more runs and they're they're just not playing well right now and that. So i i. I don't hate the brewers there. I think that. Because i i think the brewers at number fourteen is a good spot at number thirteen they have the espn has the blue jays. Ranked there They are twenty and seventeen. George springer obviously entered the season as the biggest biggest attraction and signing of the year. He's only played a few games so far this year. Marcus siemian really has been their biggest addition is definitely bouncing back after a terrible twenty twenty season and second on the team in war behind vladimir guerrero junior They are six and four out of their last ten. They're playing pretty good. I think that they have a great shot this year at at doing something relatively special if they if they're especially if spring comes back and makes the difference that that a lot of people are expecting him to do at number twelve we have the cleveland indians. Jose ramirez as has been off to quietly one of the best best starts You know to start a potential. mvp season. he's he's having a fantastic year large. He's definitely he's he's he's definitely doing great like i said he's finally up in the league. Leaders home runs. He's one of the best. Spots is one of the best players on the indians right now and i mean you also have to remember that they also have shane bieber and aaron civil and a really good pitching staff and trust him kenzi who could be a really good number two eventually and so. I think that that. I think cleveland is a dangerous team to keep your eyes out for. I mean right now. Cleveland is twenty one fifteen and they're eight and two out of their last and they did lose recently to seattle but ever since getting no hit for the second time they've played really good baseball and i think that that needs to be rewarded number. Eleven they have the new york mets. I don't hate that right there. I don i don't hate that. The mets or there at number eleven. Because i like the mets did go five and a homestand against arizona in baltimore And there they are on a they. Were on a seven game winning streak earn eight. Winning streak sees me up until not me. I'm sorry one more time. A seven game winning streak. I'm sorry. I keep correcting myself. They were on a seven game winning streak and then did lose to tampa bay. There did lose. Dick jacob degrom which is going to be a terrible loss for them but see walker is still pitching or cvt on. Walker's is pitching really well right now. He's three and once a twenty year and he's only allowed just one home run in the forty one innings that he's pitched so i think that's really good Number ten they have the astros. Now i i actually kinda liked this because the astros were playing pretty well over the last ten games. They're on a four game winning streak right now..

"Welcome back every buddy to the g. s. m. c. baseball podcast. I'm your host for this episode and this segment and the next couple segments. patrick kenny. Just welcome in your back in. So we're gonna be comparing more. I would put as my power. Rankings to espn's power rankings. Right here so what. We're just gonna get started at number thirty number thirty. They have the detroit tigers. They say nothing. Much has changed for the tigers over the past week but except that kansas city in minnesota have been playing almost as bad as they have. So i disagree. I am going to put this was also two games ago For four detroit. So i'm putting minnesota there. I think minnesota is just not playing. Good i don't think that minnesota needs to be ranked highs they are in this Power rankings espn. So i'm putting minnesota at number thirty at number twenty nine they have the colorado rockies the rockies they have the rockies they have they said the rockies had nearly twice as many losses as they had wins going into last wednesday doubleheader against the padres and are tuned in word two and fourteen on the road. And i don't. I don't actually hate that. Take really at all But i i have to say that. I i'm gonna put instead of the rockies there on putting i i mean i'm going to put kansas city there and other reason i put in kansas city. There's because they're one and nine out of their last ten and they just haven't been playing well. They haven't been playing wolf a couple of weeks now and i'm gonna throw kansas city there instead of colorado at number twenty nine at number twenty eight i have the rockies. Now the rockies. I have them this low. They are five and five out of their last ten but they're still fifteen and twenty four overall in the season. And i just don't love. I just don't love the rockies right now. They have the pirates. They're the they have that. They say that the things be catching up. The pirates with consecutive losses and growing strain to colin moran is a big laws and they still have to wait on ke bryan hayes to come back and i don't. I tend to agree a little bit but i still think that there are teams. That are playing worse right now than than pittsburgh at number twenty seven they have the baltimore orioles. I'm putting the arizona diamondbacks there. They have the cardinals there. Because the orioles are pre close or they say the oils are pretty close in the east standings and john means is having a great year so far he is leading the league in war right now and american league hitters are as a one twenty one. Era which lead the american league so far but they're they're also not playing well. They are three and seven out of their last ten. So i'm actually going to keep the orioles there. And instead i'm going to put the diamondbacks at number twenty six and the reason i have the diamondbacks at number twenty six because i think that there are a better team than the other teams that have listed so far. I just think they're kind of going through a little bit of a losing streak or logistics. Get they are. They have lost three zero to eight in their last ten. But i think right now. I i just don't see arizona really moving moving up very much at number twenty five They have the rangers now the ranger they said. The rangers have been you know they. They've kind of been a surprise storyline. They've won a few few straight series and then they did lose a couple games to the giants Like earlier this past week and they they dominated lefthanded pitching and they have a twelve and five record against the hand hitters. That have started against him. So that's really good for them And i don't hate. I don't hate that at all at number twenty four. They have the los angeles angels now. Ready talked about Rx we haven't talked about the angels yet. I don't think the angels did release apropos holes. They wanted to get more at bats. Joe walsh and so hey itani but also because walsh's playing first base and somebody else at this point taylor award playing right field it would help greatly. It would greatly help their defensive ranks among which is one of the worst in the sport right now in the angels chop the talent can't rival your. They can rival pretty much. Anybody seen they have the best player in likely in major league baseball history and and have a great two way player and they just haven't reached the postseason. I don't think they're going through this year at number twenty three they have the diamondbacks and where they're putting the diamondbacks. I'm actually going to put. The i mean they have the diamondbacks at twenty three. I think that i could probably put put baltimore there. If i'm if i'm going to be honest i'm putting baltimore. They're just because they're three and seven. They're not doing great this year. And i mean i i mean we have already talked about. Spn putting baltimore little bit lower. But i think that because of how close they are in the division standings right now like they're the only team aside from the angels that are in last place in the american league That i mean. I just i. I think they're close enough and they're playing well enough that they deserve to be there. They've had one of the toughest records or toughest schedules in the league. And their ten sixteen against teams that are above five hundred they. They've only played. They played thirty. Eight games they twenty. Six of those games have been against teams that are above five hundred. So i think that the the oriels really right now or just you know. They're they're victims of their scheduling. So i think that's why i would put them there at number twenty two they have the washington nationals. Max scherzer is really the only bright spot on that team right now it he. It's it's really the only thing that they're actually doing very well. Right now. is max scherzer. Won soto is is doing okay. But they lost. They lost even strasbourg. And there's not playing great baseball right now. And that's why they're three and seven out of their last ten at number twenty one. They have the minnesota twins. I put the minnesota twins at number thirty because right now. I don't think they're good baseball team. And it's this is definitely the biggest surprise i think to me of the year but instead i would rather put eighteen like either pittsburgh or maybe even cincinnati there i think i'd put cincinnati there Because we already talked about pittsburgh but i- cincinnati is five and five other last ten but over the last couple of weeks that they haven't been hitting the baseball as well as they had as well as they need to be to compensate for their lackluster. There's just lackluster like offense. And i mean so. I'm putting the reds. They're they're five and five out of their last hand. They are on a two game losing streak and they're playing colorado and they lost to colorado which is a team. I put lower on this list and is it is just not looking good to be there to be reds fan at number twenty. They have listed as the seattle mariners. And the they they playing decent. They played really well against the dodgers. But they are three and seven out of their last ten. And they're going up. Against a cleveland team overall over the past few weeks as actually been a very good baseball team and they did get a win Yesterday i don't know what's going to happen today. Obviously you guys would have known that. But right now i i i actually kinda like the seattle mariners right there. They're three and seven out of their last ten but they did win against the cleveland indians but they also are going to have to face. Shane bieber sometime this series. And it's it's probably not could be a fun night for them a number nineteen they have the marlins and they the marlins right now. They're doing okay as us at ular is still doing really good. Sixto sanchez is doing very good. They have a really good young core. And i think that i said this is the beginning of the year. I don't think that the marlins are going to do anything necessarily this year. But i think they're setting themselves up. Free van tastic..

"They're five and five but they have lost their most other last two games. The one thing that i don't like about cincinnati is that they're just giving up too many runs right now. They had one of the best offenses in baseball at the beginning of the year and they were blowing teams out like they had by far at one point the best run differential in baseball. And now it's at zero. And the like they have won. They've scored hundred and ninety two runs which is second in the national league only to The dodgers who scored one hundred ninety six overall fourth best in baseball. But they're giving up so many runs they've given up one hundred ninety six runs as well. And that is the angels have given up more and i. And that's the excuse me one hundred and eighty two runs. The angels in the arizona and colorado are the only teams have given more runs this year. And i mean there. I think it's a shame that their offense is going to be wasted. It looks like this year. at least right now what. It looks like an pittsburgh right now. They're in last place in the central they're sixteen and twenty two. They're six and a half games back out of first place and five games back out of the wild card. They are foreign six out of their last ten. So they're not doing terrible but they're not doing great either. And their minus forty three on the season in run differential out in the nfl west reduce. Go bottom top right here to rounded out. Colorado is in last place. They're fifteen and twenty four eight and a half games back out of first place in six and a half games back out of the wildcard. They're five and five eh last ten. But they are on a three game winning streak right now and they're playing a team that's cata struggling in cincinnati reds. So that could be very good for the for the rockies. Arizona is in fourth. they're seventeen and twenty two. They're six and a half games back out a first and four and a half games back out of wildcard. They are really struggling right now. However there too in a at their last ten. And i've lost three in a row. The dodgers right now they are in third place by just a half game out of second twenty one and seventeen two games back out of first place and they have that second wildcard right now. Dodgers are kind of starting to turn things around there five and five out of their last hand in honour. Three game winning streak right now. So that's really good for the dodgers dodger. Fans san diego right now is in second in the nl west. They're twenty two and seventeen and a half games back at first but they are a half game up on that. Second wildcard spot with the dodgers. They are plus twenty eight and run differential. The i forgot to say there plus forty three and run differential and the padres are six and four out of ten. They won their most recent game. And that's really important especially 'cause they're playing the saint louis cardinals right now and cardinals have a really good team so far. The giants are in first right now. They're twenty three in fifteen probably the surprise of the year. I didn't wanna give it to them just yet. But i would say that. They're probably the surprise of the year. Right now i i wanted to kinda give it to kansas city. I think it need to kansas city for awhile. I wanted give it to maybe the angels. They're not doing very well. Actually i give it to the minnesota twins. Because they i think i i am more. I'm gonna stick with that big. Because i am more surprised. At the minnesota twins have only won twelve games then. I am more surprised that the i'm more surprised about the minnesota twins only winning twelve games right now than i am about the san francisco giants winning twenty three up until this point. I mean it's it's kind of crazy when you really think about it. It really really is so we're going to talk a little bit here about some more some stats which is going to go through. The leaders obe. Es leaders might trout one eleven in or excuse me eleven and twelve ob s kris bryant. A one thousand sixty nine bs jesse winker in third eight ten fifty seven ronald Junior ah ten fifty and jd. Martinez has ten forty opie. S right now. League leaders in slugging kris bryant right now leading the league in slugging with a sixty six slugging percentage roderick kunia junior with a six fifty one might trout with a six forty nine jesse winker with a six thirty eight and jd martinez with e. Six eighteen on base percentage might trout as the best on base percentage in baseball right now with a four sixty three on base percentage. Bryce harper is a close second with a four forty nine vladimir guerrero. Junior is a four forty so far this year. Max muncie with four thirty nine. That's really impressive. Considering max munchies average right now is to forty three but his. Oh bs is almost double. That sounds really really good. Chris taylor right now also has kind of a similar situation amac's money he's only hitting two eighty seven but his opium is a four twenty three right now. League leaders in average. German mercedes hitting three seventy four so far this year jesse winker in second hitting three sixty four. Your alvarez is hitting three sixty three forty six. excuse me zander. bogart's in forthright here hitting three forty five and might trout hitting three forty. Two still are league leader in strikeout. So far joey gallo still topping that mantle with fifty seven strikeouts so far this year matt. Chapman is in second. With fifty four and a suarez fifty-three hopkins with four fifty and then randy arose arena with forty nine so far this year are league leader in walk so far this year. Max muncie has thirty six. Carlos santana has thirty one yards mind. Granddaughter has or excuse me twenty nine. Yati diaz has twenty seven and vitamin guerrero. Junior has twenty seven league leader in. Rbi's jd martinez. With thirty three. Jose abreu with thirty two and hayes us adler also tied for thirty two then. Rafael denver's year e. l. and trae manzini route out the top five. All tied for thirty are league leader in home runs ronald kunia. Junior has twelve mitch. Haniger shohei ohtani. Jose ramirez all have eleven and kris bryant. All these garcia aaron judge and jd. Martinez all have ten..

"Letting him down. It is what it is right now. out in ao west though oakland is in first place right now. They're six and four out of their last ten or twenty four and sixteen For their overall record houston is in second at twenty two in seventeen. They're seven in three out of their last ten there on a four game winning streak and they are a game and a half back out of first place. Seattle is in third place right now. They're nineteen and twenty four and a half games back out of first and three and a half games back out of a wild card by the houston has the other wildcard spot. Right now Seattle is three games back out of the wildcard there. Three and seven out of their last ten but they did win their most. Recent game against the cleveland indians. Just or just the other day. The rangers are in fourth place right now. They're eighteen and twenty two their six games back out of i. Four half games back out of the wildcard. They're five and five out of their last ten but they are on a four game losing streak right now and they're playing. Houston happens to be on a four game winning streak as i'm recording this so it might be. It might be completely different by the time this episode gets posted. But right as of right now houston is on a four game winning streak. They're playing the rangers and the rangers are on a four game. Losing streak right now. The angels are in last place in the division. they're in fifth place. they're sixteen and twenty one. They're six and a half games back out of first place and five games back out of the wild card. They are three and seven out of their last ten. And they are on a three-game losing streak they're also They're also minus thirty nine and run differential. Which is the second worst in the american league right now. Just behind detroit. They're not. They're just not playing well and i i it. It's really like i said last time we went over this Our pools are leaving losing our pools. And then having shohei otani in mike trout having to the best seasons of their careers up until this point and not making. The playoffs is brady astonishing. Honestly it's i. It's pretty crazy Going out the east. The mets are currently in first place. They're seven and three other last ten. They did lose their most recent game however but they're eighteen and fourteen right now and a half game up on the philadelphia phillies. The phillies are twenty one and eighteen. There are five games back out of or half game back. Excuse me have gained back first and a half game back out of the wild card. They are also seven and three add their last ten but they have won their most recent game. Unlike the mets the mets right now are playing tampa bay philly is playing toronto atlanta. Right now is playing. Milwaukee atlanta's third blaze. They're eighteen and twenty. There's three games back at first place in three games back out of the wildcard there. Six and four out of their last ten and they did win their most recent game. Miami still the not the only team anymore that is positive run differential but they still have the best run differential out of every team in the nfl east right now. The mets are plus. Three miami is plus eleven atlanta. Three games back out a wild card and first place. Miami is seventeen and twenty one which puts them at four games back from first place and the wildcard. They're five and five of their last ten but they did lose their most recent game to the dodgers washington in the cellar. Right now they're fifteen and nineteen. There are three and seven out of their last ten but they have won two straight. I think washington really could turn it around. And like i said you could literally place these teams in any order in this division and i really wouldn't bat an eye because this division is really really competitive and weird lee enough. They all got out to really slow starts which is honestly really surprising to me. I expected atlanta to be a little bit better. I didn't expect philly didn't i. Actually i would probably say. I expected the phillies to be about this good but i expected the mets to be much better than what they have been not as of lately but just overall this year. I don't expect them but then again. Nobody really expected them to have to miss. Like seven games or like out of their seven out of their first. Ten games because of rain delays in covert. So i mean that that definitely makes it harder on things. The central is up next. Saint louis is currently in first place in the central twenty three and sixteen. They're six and four out of their last ten in plus twenty six in their run. Differential milwaukee is in second place right. Now they're three games back out of first one and a half games back out of the wildcard there twenty and nineteen. There are three and seven in their last ten games in our have their most recent two games. It's not great for them. They're really close to being there. Really close to being where. I think that a at where where. I was hoping to see them. And i think that they're just maybe one or two pieces away and we'll look a little bit more at the stats to hear it. A little bit to see what could be improved by milwaukee. What could air in what really needs to be either trade for the trade deadline. Can't think things like that. The chicago cubs right now are eighteen and nineteen there in third place there. Four games back out a i. In two and a half games back out of the wildcard there six and four out of their last ten and lose their most recent game against detroit. Cincinnati is in fourth place. They're seventeen and nineteen there. Four and a half games back at first and three games back out of the wild carbon. They're playing five hundred ball as out of the last ten games..

"Down. We are the club. We're gonna get the enough you guys saw yesterday. Nick savings response to jimbo. Fisher i want to get to that here in. Just one second. But real quick with george springer in the lineup. There how do you think fan. Are they get restless tony. They're definitely getting restless he's restless. He said he's frustrated. Sounds like he's So he's back on the injured list after just four games. We did hit. Two home. runs the four-games but they They're right quad. Became an issue again and it sounds like he's going to be out an extended period of time this time like even more than before. Maybe he might not be getting the season going to midway through the season for toronto. And we'd said that. When you get george springer as much as we hated to see him go. This is what you knew. You're getting yeah you signed up for it man But i would imagine because the way they were counting on him a veteran guy in a very youthful line-up to he can still make an impact whether he's in uniform or not but the impact on the field who you know how fans get restless already. Like wow gosh again. You know how i mean. I'm not saying fans are bad. But i get it. We all do. It's like come on man so the question. Is this lingers. All year long as we are now Did the astros make the right move and let them go looking at the roster here and springer's injury i mean i am I've always been on that side of it that it was smart to move on from him which is just you know. It's it's sucks because your heart was in it. It thirty one years old when he left and the injury his six year deals guys that age start smart at the end of the day. It's the truth and you're going to have a twenty of hesitancy to sign anybody for that long. Like that deepened the thirties. You can sign guys till they're route thirty five and get away with it but passed the age of thirty five like they're gonna hate that deal at the end. Thank about this right now. The centerfield situation. Here's been average at best. That's being kind. It's been my average. I'm trying to be the average being the low in. i'm trying not to bury him completely but they've been. It's not been good right. Sealed has not been good especially at the plate for them in toronto. You've got what lately less than five years. Four games with spring rains. And we're thirty games in and your like again. We're announced his second stint being hurt. So you say okay. Who's more frustrated them because he teased him with a couple of home runs but hasn't been on the field. It has to be or or here because our expectations weren't high anyway in centerfield once he left off. And would if you'd okay knowing what you know. Today and it's springer is only played four games but he's gonna come back at some point and no one howell right field and center fielder not hitting. What would you do now with him with spring up. Let me just what you did. Yeah i wasn't. He the only way. I could have brought him back was if it was a four year. Deal or less. That was it. And that's what matters six years too much for you for him. The length was way too much. I could have gone to four. And i wouldn't have loved the idea of just because i think that he would miss too many games and doing a for your deprive would have been more on the yearly average. But he's when he's healthy and right he is a twenty five million dollar a year player like he's being paid but he's just he's never going to get through one hundred sixty two games in the regular season. It's just it's just not gonna happen eventually. You know you're going to be paying all that to move him out of flying. The outfield like his long-term future for toronto is as the d. h. It's just the truth right right. And i think that that i would imagine when they got him. They figured half the time or at least a good half of it. Maybe even more was going to be spent aging for them. Yeah i would. I don't think that they had centerfield in mind for the next six years. But that's neither here nor there in the deals done but he you're not going see him. I now that that helps the houston astros. Obviously in the ballpark. But it is kind of a bummer. That you don't get to enjoy him playing right this week. it really is. I would have liked to seen it. Yeah come back home. I really would have would have been nice or they've done a tribute to him. Oh yeah without a massive tribute. And i don't know if he's gonna be there shall i don. I doubt he's traveling. He you never know he might and if they have word that he is. I would assume that there will be a massive welcome back. Some sort of gift given you know type of thing like that. That's going to happen. That would be such a weird. Look though what. It's him in a toronto uniform. Oh yeah it doesn't it's just park. Yeah says he's guys that leave like if career leaves and he goes somewhere it's gonna it's never gonna look right it never will and i'll be honest with you to me. It looks. i don't know why says. And maybe it's my love for the guy in toronto but I think springer will look. It looks a little bit. it's gut wrenching to me. Then it will be to see korean another uniform. Just the look of. It'll be more harsh. I know other people basically the opposite for me personally springer in a non astra's uniform looks and maybe you know maybe it feels like he's just been your soul anymore years right. That's what feels. And i just don't want to go. I don't think it will have the same impact on me in a different uniform That's supposed to look like that. Because he hasn't been in the end. You know here ten years or twelve years doing it but his made a hell of an impacter. I don't know for me. which do you have one. That would be worse for to me the buffalo the same because is that mean feel the same in terms of seeing them a different uniform. They'll be different. I think i will be a little bit more cringe-worthy with with the career one because it's gonna you know what would suck. Is that if he goes off somewhere and like hits peak. Mvp type of potential. Like if he did. that's somewhere else. That would kind of gross me out a little bit. But that's why would that one would hurt a little bit more They both had such big contributions and amid all much. Like it's gonna stink no matter what which by the way we keep talking about korea. Look it's early. He can still turn into massive numbers this season. But we got to talk about it. Honestly he is not having the season that he needs to have to go get the kind of money that he thinks. He deserves to tanks. And we've looked we can kick into that nine o'clock i'll just tell you this i've i've firmly believed us when that when that kind of money's hanging over your head you're going to ways you're either going to go off because that's just how it is or the struggle and you can't just be. There's no way anybody could tell me that. The money's not part of the pressure for him it has to be right it just has to be and he's been big and big moments but i think it just has to be part of the pressure the struggles and and it has been a struggle. "It's like I knew somewhere but it just it never really was the thing that I was conscious of which I'm embarrassed to say but at the same time just in general I just would never so aware of being a woman but until I started doing this and also because I had The incredible privilege of drawing a Lotta the time from the broadcast area and You know I have a very fortuitous friendship with the giants broadcaster. Jon Miller and all the mostly men up in that area as well but they're all just like so supportive and nice and I never really had any moment where I just thought Whoa. I'm a woman up here you know so. It was sort of this weird stark realization and the first thing I thought was there's Oughta be good story about women in baseball because that's what I work with. I am inspired by stories. I'm not inspired by photographs. Or you know just the stories and low and behold after I went to the the only Goto story I knew of League of their own and then dug a little deeper Just below the surface there are some incredible stories and I just got addicted. I thought there's gotTa be more and I gotTa Talk to these women and it just kinda became borderline obsessive but so much fun and I found really great stories to work with and you learn that they have an annual reunion of players and family members And you told the story in an interview that I heard about Almost being like a wedding crasher and going there and trying to get to know them and get an gained cover level with them in part of your effort involved a lip sync contests. Can you tell that story? Yeah Yeah my my five minutes of fame. I well as you said. It is a very intimate gathering this annual reunion. Apparently you can just go. I don't know according to the Internet so I did. I spent some advance money and the reunion but these people get together every year as they have since the early eighties so I showed up and the bigger about shows that it was like crashing a family reunion which is exactly what it felt like but so I had been to one and then There was an event at Yankee Stadium. Honoring the women of the League. That sort of some somewhat helped put together through My friend gene aftermath. Who wrote the forward to this new book the Incredible Women And she put together thing to on women and while we were there a woman if I would participate in the annual state contest the following year. They needed some contestants. And I I don't even know that I actually said yes. I think I said something along the lines of I would love to. But and then she just said great I didn't prepare really I. I've practiced this thing in my airbnb but I put together a kind of a pantomime using photo to Debby boone. Light up my life and Had a whole suitcase of photos of like it was just. It was ridiculous. I had no idea what I was doing but anyway and I like I said I had no time to practice and this thing I put together is so me. It wasn't just me standing up there lifting Hong of course I always have to Overdo it. I get something in my head like I'm just make this grand production but then I don't have any time to practice so there's all the photos upside down that I have to remember where they are listed at the right time and I don't know how I did it. I honestly I actually had like a complete out of body experience but I somehow pulled it off and the room just exploded and I I one thing contests But it was the most interesting thing because It wasn't that I had been. You know shunned or no one had been nicely. Everyone was really nice. I just was not Part of that intimate group of people that gathered every year but after this weird live think production to you. Light up my life People were coming after me the rest of the weekend and introducing me to their families and tell you know this is the growth telling you about our people who had never spoken through are coming up to be talking to me and it's the weirdest thing but that was the thing that sort of Brought the wall down a little bit and I was able to talk to a lot more of these women and their families and And just made everything a lot easier. So yeah I don't know what lesson Orissa they learned from that but but I learned. Yeah you throw yourself and you work for sure and it. Gets you an entry into talking with these players? And I'm curious as you went through the process of reach Researching the book while I was there. A player that you really enjoyed getting to know either directly or through other stories. Oh God there's there several of them that I really enjoyed getting to know their their fear. That are just Dear to me and I I don't know that I even kid explain how or why but Through their stories and Just their nature and the time they spent Yeah there are several but you know I hate to even say one because there are so many wonderful but Gene Fowler was sort of a hero of mine. She's the only professional baseball player. That's thrown two perfect games in a career Manner woman but she just kind of her life experience and what she went through and her perseverance and just her grit and her sheer talent. She's kind of a genius On the mound but She is almost entirely death and there was a point where I was supposed to fly to her. He interview her and There were some complications with that. And we're going back and forth using the T. T. Y. system so I had act if I could just interview her at the reunion. A few months later and She had several people. They're wanting to interview her about point. I guess. Because she's kind of you know she's kind of a big deal at. She had whole held off on everyone waiting for me to get there to talk to me and I just I just found that. So wonderful and endearing and we had the greatest conversation and she also so funny. Just got really into telling me some stories Stood up from her chair at one point and start yelling and acting out this story and you know she can hardly you're paying but she just still with it. She's still showing up to the reunions even though she can't hear anyone when they talk to her And I don't know I just think that says a lot. And she sort of missed out on some things because of her situation. When she played and I'm just very endeared to her for a lot of those reasons I'm so jealous in going through your book Be The draw anything and I was thinking. I've done a couple of books. And I I loved the way that she used the illustration to illuminate details for example. I was amazed by the size of the ball that they use change. Constan laying out after hearing players. Talk about This surface feels a little bit different in how thrown off. They are by that. I don't even know how they were able to play with his baseball baseball softball originally and then it gets smaller and smaller How they able to adapt incredible. Oh my God I know I mean you know say anyone can say what they will about the League or why. These women shouldn't be inducted individually into the hall of fame or or. It wasn't really baseball. Which first of all anyone who says that? I gotTa tell you. Read my book or find something. Find something else so that you can understand that. This was real baseball but The athleticism itself was incredible. But imagine you know. Imagine playing soccer and starting with something the size of a beach ball and ending with something the size of a grapefruit not even just every year sometimes midseason the ball would get smaller and their ability to adapt and then pitching style. You know it started as a softball league halfway. Almost you know maybe three quarters away through the very first season they changed it to hear the all American Girls Ball League and had already made drastic changes because they just realized it wasn't competitive enough and the girl who are so good and a lot of the girls A lot of the women have grown up. Girls playing just baseball so to start with dot ball was a struggle which I think a lot of women are dealing with But to be able to adapt those things would not warning. You know they'd show up to spring training. It was like by the way the biggest base path got feet longer and the ball got a little bit smaller now. You're pitching sidearm now. You're pitching over and just like I think that just proves how amazing they were for especially for that time exactly before we go some rapid fire. Coolest compliment that you've gotten about the book. Oh my gosh I think one of the well. I've gotten handwritten letters from some of these women. That's just amazing. They all got a copy and one woman said You captured my experience perfectly. Which just let's just say there were tears. There is crying in baseball. Yeah I I guess that would be. That would be the most meaningful. You mentioned your friendship with John Miller. I got to know John when I was covering the Baltimore Orioles and he was still the orioles broadcaster. What how did you get to know him? The the magic of Instagram. I GUESS HE'S A. He's a prolific instagram or but He grew up in Hayward California. And Somehow there. There was a comment on posted his. My boyfriend actually thought posted his tag me in it because it had an image of his father playing the gut bucket which I don't know if anyone knows that this is it's basically a wash turned upside down with like a broomstick and a rope and it's turned into a makeshift stand up bass and when my family used to have like just fun party. Jam Sessions in the back room of my great aunt's house. My grandfather would play the gut bucket and my boyfriend's a musician so I was always trying to tell him what the thing was and he's like I don't know what this is. So he saw in John Miller's post and I commented that or played a mean gut bucket well rock was. My grandfather was a local columnists In the paper the Hayward Daily Review so John Miller grew up reading my grandfather's calm and recognize my name and went to my page and saw that I was illustrating baseball So yeah. He reached out me through instagram. And invited me to a game and to the broadcast booth and I think when I woke up from passing out on the ground I agree But that was Handful of years ago and they've just become like family to me he and his wife and his family here. Just just wonderful and Sarah Langton I in a conversation on the podcasts yesterday we started talking about favorite home. Run calls what yours. Oh well I mean it's gotta be audience close by to I I do love the old rust. Hodges bye bye baby but Yeah I think my favorite is out to be the audience. Yeah I think it really really was one of the first ones that I felt transported onto the field. He was a good guy. I didn't know anything about him. But yeah great conversation. Really cool to just hear the little little insights on how he works with what superstars to try and get them to be better player so I think the listeners are really going to enjoy this money and we'll probably be Jones and I and baseball as well. Yeah and this is the start of what we're GONNA referred to his coaches week. We're going to be talking with Wayne. Kirby longtime coach the Baltimore Orioles Coach the Sandiego padres now be mining stories from personalities and moments in his career and we got others that were working on as well today. We'll also be talking with the Nika Orek The author of a new book the incredible women the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. It's a tremendous book. I'd recommend it to anybody. And she has a great story to tell we. Start today with some awful news. Arizona diamondbacks center fielder starling. Marseille announced Monday on social media that his wife. Noelia has died of a heart attack. He posted on instagram. Today I go through the great pain of making public the unfortunate death of my wife. Noelia due to a heart attack. It is a moment of indescribable pain. On behalf of my family I'm grateful for the expressions of esteem and solidarity in this difficult time and I'm sure so. Many players have reached out to them. Starting Marseille someone very well liked and respected by his peers. Artola Cologne the longtime pitcher told our Marley Rivera that he still hopes to pitch in the major leagues. He's forty six now is not pitching the majors since September. Two thousand eighteen but he is not considering retirement yet the quote it a game to Marley. I'm available the governors of some states important for Major League Baseball New York Texas California all express openness on Monday to the idea of professional sports being played in their respective states sometime in June. So that's a hopeful development for baseball and its effort to get back on the field will say this and made a lot of calls on. Monday was sources in the more that I hear about the ongoing talks between the Union and Major League Baseball. There hasn't been a lot of progress today. The clock is ticking. Although I do think they take anything. They could get a sixty game season at thirty game season tournament to at least try to play the game. Of course the proposal that was put out by Major League Baseball to the Union last week. was about an eighty two game season before we get to Dino. Ak- check out the latest episode of the Woge Pot. And what's at stake for these sports in the future? Find it wherever you get your podcast or is the author of the new book. The incredible women of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League Nica welcome. Thanks for having me. It's great to talk to. This is a history These wonderful illustrations and I mentioned to you in a in a message. Of your cartoons. Remind me of those I've always loved. And in Yorker But your research is incredible in detailed. This was a project long in the making yes Yeah Yeah it could've been a lot longer. I had so much. Yeah about three years from beginning to end now. Your grandfather was a cartoonist He passed away about a decade ago. Tell me about his role in your life. Well Gosh I think he probably He's every role in my life but yeah he was a cartoonist and a newspaper columnist and He just very witty. Clever worm In his writing and in his being But he also loves baseball and baseball always on at my grandparents house and he played when he was younger. His father played and coached and It was just always around and I think because I loved everything he did and everything he was about. I just naturally loved baseball and the Baseball. And then eventually you know here. We are kind of filtered. Its way into my life as has everything. He's done really. Can you sort of describe that? Like what are things you remember your early memories of baseball and sharing that with grandfather. Oh sure well one thing that just always stands out and I think of him. Every time I hear at any time A leadoff walk. I can hear him saying God thing it. You never walked the leadoff guy. Yeah Jeez you know he's like it was like never happened before he would just curse it But you know my earliest memories that I love were just. They would have the ball game on the radio. Long Simmons with calling the giants Games at the time and my grandparents lived in the bay area And they had a big deck out front in their of their home in Fremont and we would just sit out on the deck in the summertime. And my grandma would bring hot chocolate and we would just sit there and listen to the game and then every once in a while he would tell me stories or you know he. He knew every he just looks like a walking not even an encyclopedia a walking library. I guess you could say and I would always you know later. I would call him if there was some sort of strange call Or you know what a what happened there. And he knew you know though. That's the infield fly rule and that you know he would explain whatever had happened but Later you know I lived. I grew up in Salt Lake City. My parents moved when I was younger. I worked for the airlines. And they used to call you know. This is before the apple or anything like that and we didn't get the giants games on the radio so our our Knowing what was going on was a single phone rang on the house phone if the giants scored and then I believe it was two rings that the other team scored. I can't quite remember but there was definitely a code and it was not not accurate. Or you know you didn't really know what was going on but it was just really fun and Just kept US connected and I spent all my summers with my grandparents and weekends and you know I spent probably more time with my family in the bay area than the family that we had in Salt Lake City but Actually I know I did but Yeah it was just always there in the found of the game was around before I ever really understood what was happening so when I finally understood the game. It was just Yeah just Masao and just loved it. I loved the found and the site. How did he impact? Your path is an illustrator. You know I didn't realize that he had until You know he passed away and then a few years later just a couple of years ago we had to move my grandmother into a memory care facility and I sort of inherited these big boxes and tubs of different things that were in their garage and that was so fun going through them. But he's the make a Homemade BIRTHDAY CARDS. He would take an eight and a half by eleven sheet folded in half lengthwise and draw little cartoon on the front and some clever thing on the inside and I don't know what happened to mind but I found a big stack of them that were made for my grandma and I didn't know I pulled them out and my very first thought was. I don't remember making me. I realized that I didn't he had So I think whatever was in his style and his nature In drawing I guess it just obviously very much influenced me because it's very much how I draw today so I think it was just all the days spent looking over his shoulder which would have driven me nuts but he was so sweet. He didn't care. Some little kid was watching me. Dry every line. I'd tell the scrammed probably but he was very patient and he was always encouraging me to draw as well so I think just picked up on it naturally did an interview and NPR's only a game. I would encourage everyone to go and find that it was a terrific piece that they did on you and I was fascinated by the idea. You mentioned that when you want to tell a story your instinct is to use illustrations to help you do that. Can you just explain that? Well know I guess just because I draw and I love story. It's almost like an abbreviated thing. Might my brain just automatically. When I hear a good story. The first thing I think is how do I draw that? I WANNA draw that or I'll be out and see a funny interaction between two people or you know a guy on the train and I just think I want to draw that Because there's so many things that you can do with line and an image that tell a story without words Little details on a button on someone's jacket or something can just say anything. But there's also things you can do with illustration that can tell the story that A photograph or words can't Or they do differently. I should say Kind of the way that animation does for film you. Can you can exaggerate things you can take things to a whole other world. You can You can do things with story. That you just can't do with other mediums when you are combining your imagination with Whatever drawing skill you have and It takes a while to get to that point. I guess when you're able to take what's in your head and put it down on a piece of paper Once you get there that is just the most fun you can possibly have when what you're thinking actually comes out because then you're able to just become a conduit or filter for story I draw all the time and and I will. I'm embarrassed to say this that I'll laugh at my own drawing or giggle or something because I don't feel like I did it. I feel like it's got a life of its own. The second it comes out of my pen and it just becomes his own thing. And I'm just the facilitator you know So that's also fun. I just have to be careful not to express that too much people. Think that. But that is the most fun now. You're looking over images of baseball of sports. That inspired Your choices subject here. The incredible women the All American Girls Professional Baseball. Can you tell that story? Yeah well you know. I've been drawing an illustrating baseball for a handful of years now Just kind of for fun. I started illustrating some baseball stuff for a story I was working on. I was doing a story and character work for animation and A you know it was it just Kinda took on a life of its own and I've been able to illustrate You know just working not in that realm and I do a lot of ballpark drawing where some people will keep score when they go to a ball game. I sketch and I was putting together a lot of my ballpark drawings and sketches For A self published Little Book Project. I was working on just to have something to bring to this Animation Echo that I attend and as I was going through the drawings It occurred to me that other than like a few drawings of stand there were no women in any of my drawing and It just it was never something at the forefront of my consciousness women baseball just the fact that there were women players or you know..

Let's start here. If you were the. That sounds like, yeah. Okay. If you were the angels stopped with, yeah. What would you do with Albert Pujols Holtz he had a season ending me surgery last week pools, thirty eight. He's due in the next three years. This is a salary twenty eight million year after that twenty nine million year after that thirty million in the last three years of his back loaded contract. That's eighty seven million total. So you have to pay him whether he plays or not. But you have Shohei Ohtani ready to take over as the full-time d. h. and if he does that means pools has to play first base, he can barely run, doesn't hit well anymore. And then like last year when he drove in one hundred runs, there is no metric that says he would be better than an average guy you stick their. Yep. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but wouldn't the angels best move beat. A pay pool is eighty seven million. And let him walk on a percent. That's what they need to do. That's what they should. Do. You know what we're suggesting? Yeah. Eighty seven mill win to a hall of Famer yet Mace. You know what? Eighty? Seven million is eighty. Seven eighty seven million. Oh Greg, would you do it?.

"As you mentioned it's ticipant it's and it's prediction they are picking up on cues somewhat subliminally or at least you know subtly that pitchers are giving away in the release point of their hand or even in their wind up and they're focusing on these cues and that's a subtle perhaps against bloom no give away to the pitch as its before it's about the commerce just out of the hand that can give them a hint about whether or not they're going to swing for not swing and and the interesting thing is how how fragile this balance is between getting a solid hint and not being able to hit the ball at all there is a really famous example about a decade ago where they had several major league sluggers barry bonds and albert pujols holes and they had them in a celebrity softball match and they had them face the top softball pitcher that time jennie finch olympic a softball pitcher and a hard thrower but not harder than any of these major league players were facing and these of course these two loggers were getting standing up the plate all cocky think there were going to blast the ball and not only did they not make contact with some of them could not even get the bat off of their shoulder in time to decide whether or not the swing swing at these pitches that were coming in from that underhand angle and they were they were blown away and again it had nothing to do with the speed of the pitch but it had to do with their now inability to predict anticipate what was coming because the release point was so different from what they're used to know you talk a lot in the book about some new technology that's available that will help identify the type of neural activity that suited to hitting a ninety five mile an hour fastball can you tell me about that yes so you know how i got started on this journey it was because i saw a small little article in columbia university alumni magazine about these two neuroscientists who were doing research.
