Will Myles Garrett Get Lengthy Suspension for Helmet Swing?
"Fight. That is GONNA be remembered a lot longer than the Cleveland browns. Twenty one two seven victory on Thursday night football over the Pittsburgh. steelers I am Greg Rosenthal alongside Chris Wesseling in your beautiful house. Chris unfortunately has got to go to bed. She's got an early shift to get to. And you know we've got some wild things to talk about because this game was secondary and we'll get to the game in a bit was largely forgettable big win for the browns but the last ten seconds in which myles Garrett through Mason Rudolph to the ground and then wound up taking his helmet off and Hidden Mason. Rudolph in the head with the helmet is obviously something we've never seen in. NFL history trying to think of similar circumstances Albert handsworth stomping and kicking. Andre Garard the the Cowboys Center in two thousand. Six comes to mind. He was suspended. Five Games for that But it was about as ugly as it gets in the immediate thought is. Can't browns fans just enjoy anything. And then what is the NFL going to do with myles Garrett. Yeah I think we both mentioned the Albert Hanes worth thing to each other and then I think to me it also reminded me a little bit of that west of his playoff game tobacco with the bengals and steelers just losing control at the end of the game. In this case it's really marquees. POUNCEY will be suspended but it's really hard to blame the steelers for much of this. They lost two guys two receivers to helmet-to-helmet hits from undisciplined browns team and then Myles Garrett just lost control just he went outside of his body. It seemed like Doc. He hit brewed off late on the play. which I don't think should be lost in what happens because immediately fans say hey? Rudolph was grabbing his helmet. He was trying to take his off as if he was starting. First of all. It doesn't really matter if that was true and he started anyways but Gary knew what he was doing. It's eight seconds left in the game. Rudolph clearly let go of the past and Garrett was getting in an extra shot in Garrett has such a smart guy writes poetry. He's he's such a smart player the way he plays but he has has a reputation of getting those little extra shots like. He has a little of a reputation among players or broadcaster. He pushes the envelope. And you like that sometimes as as a player but as a fan. But I don't know what it was in this case He. He felt like he had to get that extra shot. And then what happened. And he felt like he had to take Rudolph's helmet and I don't think there's anything you can really do to explain it. It's just a question of whether we see him again this year and everyone immediately after the game is saying we can't see him again. This zero we're trying to protect players and that's probably true. There are six games left in the year. I usually just go off precedent. There's really no precedent for this to me. This is a lot worse than Hanes. Were didn't hanes worth got five games gear obviously has no previous problem with the League. But it certainly wouldn't be surprising if that's it for myles Garrett this year

And and really kinda go through the steps that we need to go to learning a new offense for him. You know, getting a see him like an individual setting practice, all those type of things you can watch film. But there's a lot of things that you don't always get a seen a game that he may do well or may struggle at at practice that they did. And really I always feel like I have to go through those steps in the offseason. And once we hit the season. Then it's kinda like, okay. Hey, these are the things he does really. Well, we're gonna lean on those. We're going to try to improve on other things. But it's you you need to get hands on guys you need to be there you need to see with your own eyes. Is there any way we can make this happened? Or do you see this happening anytime soon? Those two guys not not being together just out of my life. I don't I don't know. "I I know the second game, you know, a couple of times that I've talked to him. You know, when we were kinda in that process. We kind of going back and forth on that. But I mean that was a tough game. We were coming off kind of a logger week. We had we had ten days. Get ready for the game. You know, we through a couple of different things at him. But that's kind of the process of being a young quarterback. You start seeing different stuff. You know, you have to go through that process to to become a better quarterback meal year to year week to week. And you know, I'm excited to get a work with him. His pocket presence is Armstrong. Rings, just the fact that he's played played in the NFL already. You know? I mean, he's twenty one years old. I mean, this this guy. This guy's got so much time left in his career. And this is the first time I've been around a guy this young and being able to kinda get going with him from the round floor. Gee. All right, Abby, you're next to me every single Sunday every fall. So is there anything you wanna make some sort of put, you know, anything. Any message delivered a coach gays here. You have a chance to deliver a message to the head coach of the New York Jets. Anything you want to say because I'm a misery. Every sunday. I have been for me. Yeah. Go ahead. This. You gotta get out of this this misery thing. Like, we gotta swing the other way for you. Yes. I mean, coach listen I've been married for seventeen years and every Sunday and every phone he's just bizzare Bill, which makes me miserable. Make my kids miserable. And I guess I just really need help from you. So I guess the thing that you were discussing before I hope that we can make that happen. Just changed it around. "And the rain was legendary you know, he'd beat the Packers before on the road in a cold game in Green Bay. But I I do think he's been below average the last couple of years, and you know, I don't blame them for not doing this because he makes so much money. But no-one everyone would understand if he just retired like his game probably warrants just retiring. But again, I wouldn't pass twenty million dollars. Either. Do you think the Packers tidal window is firmly shut or do you think under a new head coach that Aaron can make a deep pushed in the playoffs? Good question as I said earlier, I just don't like the head coach, I think he's beyond over his head. He looked scared. You know, he doesn't have much presence. I don't know how he's going to be able to just command in force Aaron to do what he wants them to do. Now. I do think Iraq is better than people. Give it credit for. Defense will solid. This your pet and staying on devante atop six or seven wide receiver their offense of lines. Good, obviously, the have Erin, but the divisions a problem. I mean, the bears are not going away the Minnesota Vikings roster still going to be really good next year lions sock. But while at least their head coach sucks. I actually don't think their rosters bad. But yeah, I mean, I think the windows relatively shut just because I got no faith that Matla floor is is going to lead this team to the playoffs. Now, again, if if Aaron concert playing like an MVP again, they'll they'll be in the playoff mix. I don't know. I'm not gonna bet against Aaron Rodgers bend against mala floor big-time Vikings fan, and I don't love the direction of the team. What are the chances Kirk cousins get signed after his three years if not when do they start looking for a quarterback in the draft? Good question. The direction. I mean, the directs the roster is the roster and the roster is excellent to me. It's on Mike Zimmer to understand like the league's change. You know, the can't force a square peg into around whole you pay a lot for this quarterback. I've heard Dilfer talk about it before that if you look statistically at Kirk cousins career. He does his best work on early downs. Forcing him into third long is not his strong suit. He's not Philip rivers, Tom Brady, Ranjith luck. But if you give them first and ten let them throw the ball. You got to leave receivers. I still think they're roster. They could easily be a playoff team next year. And when it comes to looking for a quarterback in the draft. You're all in right now, you spend that much money. You don't even thinking about it. You wouldn't even entertain that thought till after next year? So it wouldn't even come up till next year. And yeah, I mean, he would he had a good statistical season. I mean, I know he kinda gets crushed. And he wouldn't be the first guy won a big moment. But he's better than you think. And I think at the end of the day. Next year will kind of define his career. If they missed the playoffs again with this roster themed digs dalvin cook. You know, all those defensive guys for the most part is still under contract. I think like Anthony Barr. They have several draft picks. I'm sure they're going to take offense of and that if he misses the playoffs next year, he'll just be kind of laughing stock not a laughingstock because he's still be solid. But I mean, he's got pressure on its playoffs or bus next year. Or you could argue the if he misses the playoffs next year. In part of it's like him in big games, not playing that. Well, you could argue it's an all time just bad contract. Not that he's like Albert Hanes worth or anything. But given why they signed him and how much guaranteed money they gave him every penny on the deals guaranteed, which pro capitalism here. I'm glad he did it like I nothing, but respect for fighting for that you should like he had leverage. But he he's got a you pitzer get off the pot. Hey, john. Some of those guys are getting low heat. If people think is going to be any kind of one on way deal. You know are a lot of these guys, and I I can't speak for them. But, but if I were to guess, I would say to some of the mentality of you know, what's all this talk about there. And look at what we've done, you know, this is a group that had a lot of pride office. A lot of pride in what they do. And know that this one they burst to do the things that they've done this year. Take a lot of pride in their craft. Domination. Also, so. I don't think the things changed that that week during practice. You know, you you watch yourself you evaluate. You have a player how you're gonna Tak compete harder. You can so Yeah. watch. Were you a romantic guy in that whole thing? Absolutely. You, you are kind of you can't tell you kind of romantic. I think so. I think you're sorrow for a big strong guy. I think you cry. I think you're you're a family guy, right? Movies. Oh, cry all the time. Really when movie made you cry. I cry at moving possible. I watch possible one of the greatest movies of all time. I will say this, I cried this weekend. There's a thing on YouTube about moms and I put it on my Twitter account. I don't know if anybody watched it, but it made me cry. It was a really. I cried about the patriots loss to the Jags about that. By the way, you think the Josh Gordon things going to work. And I look at him and I just think sometimes you work at a, there's a difference between difficult. I've worked with difficult people. People are difficult and dysfunctional he falls into the, he's Albert Hanes worth. Randy moss was difficult. Albert Hanes worth with the patriots was dysfunctional Allio works. You, did you ever even have to mention names? Obviously, you played with difficult guys? Did you ever play with dysfunctional guys? Yeah, of course. Of course, we had a go ahead. We had a guy. I honestly, I don't even remember his name. He wouldn't with us too long, but he showed up to to to our team and he's and he's starting on the offensive line. This is what the chief with the chiefs and he comes in and he misses practice. When MRs practice turns out his his, his grandmother passed away. Okay. So everybody's like, so we get together and we sign a little card, send it to him. Nice. Yeah, it's very nice. And then the next week we're talking to somebody who knows him and we're like, yes, sucks about, oh boy..

"Lou Gehrig blunt play. Great. You got a chance you can play for a while. We've seen it with guys like clock, killing Corey Dillon, right? Randy moss. We've seen the other side of that. Didn't they sign Albert Hanes worth, you know, and and they. Ended up dumping him and if it's just because they're willing to dump a guy, if he doesn't tow, the patriot way doesn't help their issue. I mean, yeah, they could come in and they could tell Corey, the Josh Gordon my way or the highway, our way or the highway. We'll great if it turns out that he doesn't do it he's supposed to do or he doesn't click with Tom Brady. They're still trying to address right there wide receivers. And remember we've seen a lot of veteran or shoes Cevers that have come through there with with big names and big resumes from Ocho Cinco to Reggie Wayne too. Just in the last off season Jordan Mathews Kenny Britt, Eric decker? None of them could click with Tom Brady, right? No. I mean, certainly some of that is you know, with decker that was the handsome thing I told you already gave you my hand. Yeah. If you come in and you even come close to challenging Brady on just on pure handsomeness you're gone. That's garoppolos. And along garoppolos in San Francisco y, you had decker cut. Joe? Yeah. I mean, Gordon is going to have to come in maybe four or five days a scrub. Don't brush your teeth. You know, come in smell a little bit. Maybe a ratty looking hat. You don't wanna come in looking good right off the bat because that's going to be a, you're all sudden the alerts going to be up. You know your antenna if you're Brady's will will will what is this? Handsome guy. You're gone, but thinking about this now they're also going to get their best to me one of their best football players and the guy who's kind of the actuator that offense when it just comes to attitude, they're getting back after week four Julian Edelman, and that is certainly gonna take pressure off the guys outside. And even if Josh Gordon just comes down there and says, hey, you're going to run the Randy moss route tear tree. You're gonna run a nine and a dig. You know, those are the two things you get to run. So we'll see, we'll I, I just think there's there's high repair of reward very low risk. And that just seems. To be something the patriots are willing to do. By the way, Jacksonville, you and I wouldn't on this on this conversation last week, you and I were kinda lead odds on the whole Jacksonville, no. Are you willing to admit now the Jackson, you're right, and I was wrong while I was wrong, you're, you're smarter than me. Thank you. Yeah, but, but isn't it? Don't you look Jacksonville differently now how they are the team to be in the AFC right now? And I'm not just saying based on what happened on b. I'm based on what happened last year in the AFC championship game with the head, the patriots on the ropes. You know that they learned from that experience and they're better for it. They're the team to beat in the NFC they are. So they're such a physically tough football team in there are talented football team. I'll I called the Rams in Arizona last weekend and a lot of people in the offseason. How can they myself included? How are they going to put all this incredible talent together? You know how they're going to put these personalities together, a key to leave and Marcus Peters, and and Domigan, sue and Aaron, Donald Brandin cooks on the offense of side of the ball and how are all these guys. They're paying to mention this, that and the other and they are exceptionally talented people look at talent, Mike, and they think, oh speed and athleticism. And they have all that. But let me tell you about Jacksonville and let me tell you about the Rams. They have all that talent. They have all that speed. Yes, they have it in spades, you know what they do. They out hit people. The Rams just absolutely open a can of whoop pass on both sides of the ball against AirAsia..

"Right. Easiest transition ever, Josh Gordon out of Cleveland. He's on his way to New England New England's going to get a twenty or should say at twenty nine thousand seven round pick from the Browns. If he doesn't go for ten games a fifth round, pick going back the other way to Cleveland from New England. Josh Gordon is a talented guy. He hasn't really been a, he's he's had one season in the league. Basically he's had pieces of other seasons, but he's had one season in the league, the patriots desperately needs some wide receiver help. Fifth round pick doesn't seem like a super high price to pay. It feels like a good fit. It feels like a good risk because if he if he can't do it, they'll cut him. Yeah, and the patriots didn't want to take that chance because you have to clear waivers, and it was probably ten to fifteen teams. Sure that will enquiring about trading form the Washington Redskins wanted him in the worst way and they didn't want to give up more than a fifth round pick. So New England said, what's a fifth round pick? We got once we got, we got threes got a bunch of sevens. We got picks galore stack. Let's give up a fifth if it works out. Great. If it doesn't work on moving deal. It will package up a couple sevens to get that five back. I was a little shocked that they touched them only because of their recent history with players that have had questionable backgrounds. I would've thought they don't give me what would have thought they would do one do that. Have the murderer that said that one do one do that had the violent crime. Right. But other than that, I mean, had they bringing Dante who ran over and killed somebody accident. It was an eat. The next car, drunk accident patriots, but they're, they're gonna taking chances on this is not th. They're not adverse to technically change. Typically, the guys that they take a chance on has worked out for them even even though he was running around detail, attacking people in a salt and killing folks, the chance that they took on him coming out of college. It worked out from a football stamped in even though he had like this violent pass, and I don't know if they knew what they say. They know whatever the case is who who you gonna believe. But when you look at the other players like Albert Hanes worth, for instance, stalwart, the Chatto Cinco. Those guys didn't work out because it had nothing to do with their off to feel behavior. It has something to do with their mental behavior, understanding the playbook in. In chats case, the playbook was a problem in Haines worth. It was a playbook stalwart with just a guy who who gave them some opportunities down the field. You know, it worked our Randy moss record saying hall of Famer, Randy moss. So they got a recipe for how to handle those type situation, much like the raiders used to be in the eighties here, taking it had work more often than it wouldn't. And I just, I guess the question is, does Josh Gordon? Can you ever really count on the guy? No, he's a talented guy, but can you count scenery sometimes sometimes it does, but sometimes it doesn't. Does he come in? Does he subscribe to the patriot way? Does he do the whole thing that you need to do to be successful patriot? Or because of the things that he deals with an his life, namely addiction is this just there's an expiration and he's going to be gunned down the road, but you also know Travis and Elsie would it feels like to lose it? Would it feels like to win when you have a winning fill in this a little bit different? You like, I'm not going to be a mess this up when you lose. Time. I mean, I don't care about this saying this ain't going no way anyway, but when you're winning, you just feel deceit. It's just different. Is this something about the organization or how they turn things around? Obviously they do a good job with the players. So when I'm rooting for him, not against him. What is this about our good friend Dez Bryant, that the pagers much rather take a chance on a guy that they.

"This is what you're gonna do and if you and you have to load him up, you got load them up. You gotta give them so much volume that either quits or he breaks through because patronizing them has only gotten him in trouble at Florida and now now. So when you draft that player, okay. Here we are. You're, you're free to go. You're here in the program. We took a risk with you. Here's how we're going to mitigate the risks every day. You're in here at six o'clock, everyone, but that can't come from the general manager. That's got come from the coach. Again, he sets the culture like if I'm the GM and the Browns and Houston to, we got to have a plan for the sky. Here's the plan, where is it? I don't see it. We did see Hugh and Dorsey. They both say in that meeting with Calhoun. He finally explains situation when he gets pulled over. They say, you have our number call us, but you gotta do get a call us as soon as it happens. I mean, I. I. Any confrontation don't want confrontation. They want avoid confrontation, you know? And so like an and he's never gonna call, he's never going to call. And so, but if he knew he had to be in six clock in the morning, and if he's not, there is gone like it's a hard thing to do and sometimes you gotta lose players to get players. Sometimes you gotta just say, okay, fine. I because when you're setting a culture, if a guy can't meet the culture standards than your cultures gonna fall apart. Right? So if you lose a guy, if New England brings Albert Hanes worth and he can't conform and they cut him after week eight. He couldn't fit the culture. He was either gonna kill the culture or fit in some guys do Randy moss came in and fit in he developed within the culture, right? So that's how you maintain the culture. If you don't do that, you have no chance. And when you when you do a Ratner, which is basically placate everybody and make a joke of things that are light, you end up the stock goes down. You have no culture. Yeah. And let's talk about a guy that really is trying to buy into his own culture. It seems like and that's bigger Mayfield we saw in the first episode, Hugh kinda got him the first. Practice asked him why he wasn't out with five tyrod Taylor while he wasn't doing his own. You know, workout. Get there. Early Baker Mayfield gets asked by the media. You know, he says that he's getting up earlier. He stay in later. And even Hugh Jackson makes a comment that he that he's happy for him and he's learning the process. We see Baker go into this first preseason game, and I, you know, I know we've talked about the value of Baker being the number one pick, but you cannot say anything looked out of sync with what Baker Mayfield could do on a football field because the guy was in control in the pocket. He made an unbelievable throw to Callaway rolling out to his right in dozen NFL pass. We saw the great pass across the middle of the field account. Would that led to the touchdown and when he came in for his last drive, I mean he told the guys in the huddle. This is my last drive. We're, we're going to do something here. I mean, you seem like he has a confidence about himself within the huddle and he doesn't seem to afraid to be the number two guy right now in the game too big for him. That was pretty clear. The game wasn't too big for him. I mean, it's not Paxton Lynch, and we saw Paxton Lynch play against the Minnesota Vikings and it looks horrible. Right now. He wasn't the first pick overall in the draft. But I, I was I was pleasantly. Prized with with with Baker because he had command game onto big. He may plays with his feet. He understood it. And I think the sky's the limit the see where the guy goes when we to now we all know this and we'll talk about this on Friday. When we do the podcast about these young quarterbacks in preseason, they tend to look well because you know the coverages are so simplistic, right?.

"There's a lot of time in that just catch the ball run straight down, small offensive tackle. Yeah, that can run. Okay. Let's try. It said in a wide receiver that eats himself into. Or defects that can't get turned the corner tied in there. Yes, I a couple of those by the way. No, Aaron, Donald in LA know Khalil Mack in Oakland. And I mean if we're making a list of the best defensive players and football are those those guys are wanting to write no doubt Nestle down linemen. Yes, yeah. So I mean, both teams are deciding no, not right now. Maybe maybe later, but not not right now or at least not at that price. And I wonder DeMarco that seeing how the NFL is going seeing the rule changes take place. Almost every rule change that takes place favors the offense. It's more and more difficult to hit people. Legally in football, the games seem to be, you know, you look at the last couple of Super Bowls. You just look at the scores weaken and we got it used to be where if you got a game that was twenty eight to twenty four fifteen years ago that was a barn burner. Now you've got games that are forty five to forty two every weekend, and usually more than one is it just that the value of defense is just not there anymore. I have x. amount of dollars to spend the only way to win this league is the score. Forty points a game. The only way to win in this league is to have a great quarterback, a great ride receiver, and I gotta have a left tackle who's gonna protect that Cobra. I've got to spend all my money over there. My defense needs to be good, but it doesn't have to be the eighty five bears or or the ravens or the buccaneers that went Super Bowls just needs to be good enough. Is that why those guys aren't getting signed? Well, probably yes. And you should be wary of this. I mean, if Aaron Donald got the contract he wanted and had a similar season, you might say, well, he's still being paid too much. You know what I mean and look at von Miller von Miller when he got paid in Denver, who was their quarterback then? And how much are they paying at that time? Right. Weren't paying premium bucks for that quarterback. I think Fletcher Cox was paid in Philadelphia when he made huge money. Well, they didn't have to pay their quarterback so you can only pay one guy that much money. So you kind of want to make sure it's your quarterback. I think the the experiment and Miami with Dominic ensue. First of all was the hundred billion dollar contract to Albert Hanes worth. Yeah, that turned people. Yep, yeah, that didn't work out because once he got paid, he got lazy and once and then they paid in consumer in Miami and it didn't translate to teams, and I think there's a misconception. Yeah, in particular that, oh, he wasn't very, he was good. He was great at team stunk, but he was good. Exactly. And it was just too much money like when Ryan tannehill or whoever's playing quarterback for them as on the field ensue off it. Well, how can he help you when he's over there? But most of your money is on the bench. You don't? Yeah. So it's the economics of football just kinda dictate, hey, look, we can't pay that much money to this guy, but I mean von Miller, I don't know what he's asking for. I don't know what what Donald is asking for? What did I say? You said von Miller. I'm sorry. I don't know what Khalil Mack is asking for, but my guess is it's quarterback money. They want to be associated with the highest paid guys in the league regardless of position. Well, that's just not how the thinking works. No, I it's, it's I'm trying to think of it analogy here like. I'm the best nurse. Okay. In a hospital, I should be paid accordingly. I, I'm the best at what I do. That's great. And it's important and I need to have you there, but my my number one neurosurgeon, it's gonna make a different wage than you make. It's a more important thing than what it is that you do. Not that yours is unimportant, but I have to pay this guy a different wage that I'm gonna pay you..

"Edge as to why coach belichick to me is greatest coach of all time is not necessarily about the system per se but just identifying things in players that they can do will that can work within team structure i'll take it a step further not just greatest coach of all time but maybe in the sal recap era the greatest roster builder and because he's so obsessed with the concept of value right i can find julian edelman was a college quarterback no one was looking at it as a quarterback but belgium saw an lettuce and a specific skill set where he thought and you heard bill o'brien talk about it there he can do some stuff for us figure out what it is and then where we should pick it west welker that guy the miami dolphins didn't want any more right because it didn't fit what they were trying to do it wide receiver bella saw welker and said boy that he's he shifty he's got an ability to work in an area of the field where i need help right now so let's go get him and i wonder what he can so he's always on the lookout for value and even goes back to some of the big time guys right randy moss was an acquisition from the raiders and the raiders through with them right and bella chick said randy moss i mean let's the price is so low we have to take him right now and we'll see what he can be not even always the success stories we've seen guys go through their when their value kind of created a little bit at tim tebow and albert hanes worth another one good weight rodney harrison here's a guy that's another loss angeles charges the san diego chargers at town thought his career was done coach bill check brings him in next thing you know he's planning at all time high level we're in a super bowl with the patriots just knows he knows how to i tell in utilizing embiid will plug those guys in because he will when he looks he said he sees his own puzzle where the empty spots are and how this guy can fit so not just how how to this guy is a good a good player former first round pick whatever he is but specifically i need help here and this is someone who can do that thing and i think that's really in the salary cap era when you have to manage your resources and you're only going to succeed if you find bargains this is the most successful team by far and it's because they've been so good at that here on nfl live you know it happens almost every year one team goes from worst to first in the division and fourteen the last fifteen seasons at team climbs all the way from the basement to the top of the division last year it was both the jackson eagles that went from worst to first so this week to find the teams that will be going from worst to i this season at how about this no division has had more teams go from worst to first in recent memory than the nfc east let's take a look this right so five of the previous six nfc champs won the division after finishing in last place this season before the giants of course are hoping to continue that trend into one thirty eight teen so it is up to us to figure out who is it going to be this year so damian dan you guys are going to be the ones to help decide it so the total here is going to be one hundred percent or to go through each team we're going to give me what the percentage chances of winning the division so we know the giants were in last place at the end of last season so beginning with you do what are the chances that the giants win so i think this the nfc ease thing is going to be the most competitive division football not the best but most competitive i had the giant set eighteen percent i know people talk about the peace and you know saquon barkley who just fantastic you know talent coming into the.
