"On talkradio. Six eighty WCBS wcbMcom are not necessarily those of the owners banishment employers advertisers of WCBS him, but they should be. The following is a paid program on WCBS the garden club is brought to you by Alan Somers. This is talk radio six eighty WCBS. It's time now for the garden club. Here's your host, Alan Somers. Hello would good morning. And today, we're gonna talk bird. So I would appreciate it. If you have a gardening question, you'll hold it for next week and all the bird questions Sunday because Pete Peterson's here, we're doing our annual show on birds hoping we could do to this year. But we'll see how that works out. Anyway. Welcome pete. We're good morning. Good morning, by the way. People can't see you. You look ten years younger. Have you NuBiotix? Is your knees you're getting around? The one I massively improved in the other one gets done on Tuesday. Wow. I can see the twigs of the trees nice way way far away. Knowing you you'll see the disease and send somebody out there to spray. That's a possibility. But let's start off right in cherry hill, New Jersey and see what's going on with Ray. Good morning, gentlemen. Come. I have four bird feeders general purpose of different styles. But I wanna I'm considering spreading out a specialized theater, my concern is I don't know if the birds that I wanted to attract the really in my area, particularly interested in bird, flu birds and Orioles real might be a challenge. Northern orioles. They call around here. Baltimore orioles. They do range. They're they're they're treetop burn. They're very difficult and rare to see and I'm not sure as one famous radio host says that you choose probably isn't worth the squeeze. And as one Allen's favor terms, hummingbirds definitely are out there. I would recommend if you're going to start with hummingbirds, you place three feeders out there. They're a little bit territorial. And if one sees your the new boy on the block, and he comes somebody else is going to want to take over but having multiple hummingbird feeders. You're going to have hummingbirds in multiples. The key is to just put a little bit of nectar in there and keep it fresh when the sun had set it ferment and turns to alcohol and. You have a bunch of drunken humming birds flying around at a very high rate of speed as far as specialized feeders. I'm not sure one of the biggest things I would recommend is if you're buying a bird food that costs around ten dollars for a twenty pound or fifteen dollars for a forty pound. That has mostly kick outs, which winds up on the ground and cracked corn Milo and things like that. But some of the specialty feeders. I think you could probably benefit the most by getting a peanut feeder one that has like quarter inch mesh. Peanuts that are out of the shell. And put those in there, you're gonna you're gonna find that you're going to get white breasted not hatches, you'll get your chicken ease. Your tit mice pecking at that. But you'll get any woodpecker in your area. You may have red headed woodpeckers up here down here. We only have downy hairy which red-headed once redhead if you look at the red headed woodpecker versus a red bellied woodpecker red headed woodpeckers have a completely red head like a helmet and red bellied woodpecker has a straight down the middle their head. So sometimes they're confused. But those guys love peanut so shell peanut. So if you were going to do that, I would do that indefinitely. If you put out a Finch feeder. A finch. Feeder doesn't have a big round three quarter inch hole. It has a slit. And if you use Niger, which is a black seed, very high protein, very high oil gold finches love that and along with that indigo buntings travel with them, and that's one of the most breathtaking sites in your yard that you can see. Okay. And the thing about the finish. Feeder is on that also nice. If you can take your slips that you have and take an eighth inch drill bit and go into the bottom lightly crack, the feeder but drill in and make it like a pear shape. Switch over to a Niger seed that has sunflower piece little chips Senate. That'll also start having your small woodpeckers, actually your bigger ones. If you have the right kind of fear, they'll cling on that too because they have that Pfeiffer catered thumb does do that kind of neat to watch. How agile they are. But I'll bet you do if you make us ports. Pear-shaped you can start having the see that has a little bit of the Sunfire chips in it. And that's going to open up another world to you. You'll even find Renzo go in there, and they're perky little guys to watch. And they also like the peanuts to. So what about blueberries, what do they how do you say them? And what do you face m eastern Bluebirds are great. If you can get a C that has sunflower at the Saul out of the shell sunflower out of the shell white millet and peanut pieces. And if you get that, put whatever you're going to put in the feeder. Put a plastic ziplock bag and take something in hidden break up, the sunflower pieces, the Bluebird society said that the reason Bluebirds come to my feet, or is it because I feed them sunflower seed that's broken up. They don't like whole sunflower pieces for some reason. I used to have an aunt that wouldn't eat whole pickles. But she either slice. So go figure maybe she has to a regular type. Well. Correct. They will there's there's a feeder that's out that has a cage route that has an inch and a half square holes all around it. That's the whole that blue birds like for nesting boxes, and they go in there, and they feel protected and other birds join them, that's the fear that I have that put the special food in. But you can put it in any feeder. Do you mix that food? Pete orgies come pre next you can find mixes. I'm not sure if we're raised for right now that there's one like that. But if you find a store in the cells wild delight and a lyric also has a shell this mix, but the key to break up, the sunflower pieces and also I'd recommend Ray. When you put that feeder, I'll take some strips twelve inch six inch strips of three quarter inch wide blue ribbon entice blue ribbon around that because when birds fly if you look at the top of your feeder, that's all they see it thirty feet. So they see something blue. They're going to think one of their kind has found something and they're going to want to come down. And check it out new trick. It's fun. Get some. The Orioles what how do you feed that while they're special Oriole feeders? They they're favorite thing is great jelly jam. Actually grape jelly the feeder should be orange and the nectar is really very similar to hummingbird nectar. But they do they do love orange. If you had a just a simple system where you could take orange pieces taken orange and cut it in quarters and put those on a little nail on a steak or whatever. Like that. Again. It's not coincidental. That birds look at color and CEO, that's us oranges. Is one of the things that Orioles recognized from a distance. And it also gives them that that nectar. But the grape jelly is the one that they really like. Okay. Okay. Okay. Mic. The real information. Blue birds also love meal worms Bluebirds loves meal. Worms if you're inclined to buy those you can buy those live, which are the best ones. If you wanted to take some dried meal worms and mix. Those in with that food that you're gonna put in the field that you like the Bluebird succumb to they'll also eat dried meal worms, okay? Okay. Hey, thanks for calling. Right. Okay. Okay. Next week. L L, and I'd like to say hi to Kim. She's a nice lady. I talked to doubt the Edgewater store. Also like to say hi to the Nita say, hi, my wife, Michelle and Doug. They're all listening and just wanted to give them a shout out. Let's let's talk before I go to the next caller. You've got you've got a bird clinic coming up today in Edgewater at eleven. Yes. And then it to in Pasadena, two o'clock in Pasadena stores. Yes styles as scores. Yes. Okay. And we said good crowds. Yep. And we occurred people to bring some questions bring a few ideas. It's kind of fast moving, and we try to keep it at an hour or so person can get any get out. I'm available afterwards. So if there's anything personal or special, okay? So the eleven o'clock it's part of it's part of a series. You're going to be doing is that right? Yes, we're going to be doing three parts to January February and into March. And then we're also going to be doing one tying together the backyard where a person can create an environment. That's relaxing, peaceful natural serene that includes having birds around the area birds tend to to breed energy when you look at them moving and doing the things they do they're not watching a groundhog, they're moving and grooving and having a good time. So it's nice to have them near you. I feel that people don't do enough with birdhouses. Nesting box nesting box agree. That's a big miss. Yeah. And it's. It's not as much care as feeding. You can put it up empty that. Once a year clean it out. And that's it and extracts birds too. So few people you go to New York actually have a birdhouse. I think most people don't know the value of nesting, boxes or bird baths. Those are two things that really enhancing experience in the backyard. One of the things I like to encourage people to understand is some people don't want to have to go out and feed. I don't want to this is actively it's not work. You know, we're not building bridges and making cars, this is actively anytime you can get outside breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth look around at what God gave us a look at out there. It's just reinvigorating for us to do that. Yeah. And the bird's my fish pie frozen over now. Of course. But does the heater in there where it's little circle of water and the birds go. Of course, the ice to that water. That's so all right. Let's go next. We're gonna move along here. Let's go to the park Ville. Good morning, Elaine. Oh, good morning. I have a couple probably how Cinches they keep making a nest or my roll up lying on my porch. This would be the third or fourth year if they do it. But I want to try to head them off. What can I do? Put up a no vacancy sign. Maybe the maybe that. So anyway. They're creatures of habit, and they do come back over and over again, one of the mistakes people make you seen those plastic AL's around right? Al's come out at night birds have no idea what an Al is. So that's a waste of money. If you buy plastic hawks you can put that up in that area. And that'll certainly look birds know that until you can every couple of days just kind of move it with a stick. If you can't reach it. But one of the things you can do is they make these little inflatable snakes or you can buy little rubber snakes, and you can put some of those up there just use nylons zip ties and put those around there. And then when they see that they kind of understand that's not a friendly. Situation either. Okay. All right. Thank you. Thanks for calling Bye-bye take care. A lot of people have been bird's nest every year in their hanging baskets. This is the first time I've heard one nesting in the blinds. But hanging baskets and light fixtures. Birds tend to wanna make a list, right? We had the light fixture. The top of the light fixture. Between that and the house is little gap. There many years we've had situations in Edgewater where we are watering hanging baskets, and we kind of dentists I some that have Robins nests another burden Fs in there. So we have to kind of Mark them. So we don't spray on the nest, but they had no sales. You gotta wait to buy this get bigger later in the birds will be gone. Yeah. We actually had a Carolina Wren one time flew in the store went down the hallway by where the officers used to be into the top box made a nest so we had to and they're kind of aggressive. They're nice little birds, but they know how to protect their territory, so we had to wait for about four weeks for that one to clear out get the little babies out of there. So they're birds are pretty creative. Yep. Yeah. Edgewater dumbing bird commend. It's a lot of people come into the Edgewater garden center because of the selection of plants we have and they bring the children in and they've the hummingbirds flooding around. They see other birds gold finches and all that kind of thing. Tremendous variety and butterflies is also hummingbird moth that's about an inch and half long. It looks identical to a hummingbird and when people come there, they're amazed. They've never seen that. And we tell them look, this is all readily available on your backyard. All you have to do is put the pieces together out there, and that'll be the invitation and they'll show up. So I think it's the same hummingbird. They comes every year into the a store right in the right? Judy gets out with their feeder. Yeah, they hang a feeder by the back door. Yes. So hopefully, it will get that go outside. The we what we did our strategy was to hang one by the double backdoor leave that door open and hang one right outside where the canopy is. So little kind of see one out there and kind of go away 'cause it's kind of unnerving when you're shopping in a hummingbird buzzes by your ear. Let's go next to Silver Spring. Good morning, Mike. Good morning, two different topics. One is a what to use birds too. Suppress the population of mosquitos in the summertime. Because I have a lot of them. And then my other topic is. Packers. One house. Probably the last five years and failed anywhere for fifteen twenty woodpecker holes..

"You hear on talkradio six eighty WCBS wcbMcom are not necessarily those of the owners banishment employers advertisers of WCBS, but they should be. The following is a paid program on WCBS the garden club is brought to you by Alan Somers. This is talk radio six eighty WCBS. It's time now for the garden club. Here's your host Alan summers. Have been good morning. Let's talk gardening. I've got some open lines for one. Oh, ninety two six six eighty one eight hundred nine two two six six eighty remember next weekend. Pete will be here. Pe- Peterson will be here. And he's going to talk about birds. We have him on every winter helping to get him on twice this winter. But I don't know anybody that knows more about birding than pizzas. So you save your bird questions for next weekend is should be a really good show. It's one of the favorite shows. We do all year. Let's go first to cherry hill. New jersey. Good morning Ray morning. Alan I've heard this talk about a number of different types of hollies over the years. But I don't recall you mentioned the Burford Holly how and I have one. And I was wondering what your thinking is on Burford hollies. I have no problem with them. It's just that the red beauty. Holly is. It's it's just so perfect. Loaded with berries, small leaves doesn't get too big and very pyramidal stays pyramidal. So I'm the problem with Burford Holly. Usually grow. Do you have the dwarf with the regular? I don't know. Okay. Around six feet now it's been the ground probably for twenty years. I guess it's a dwarf. I don't know. I think the gophers less than that. I think you gotta cop. Barry ten to twelve. Okay. What is it? Grow up as a as a Bush Houston. Yours a tree shape usually grows up as a mound. Yeah. That's that's what I sorta have. Yeah. The best time to Pronin is in March in the spring. Yes. After the cold weather is here. And before the new growth comes on. And they can take severe pointing? If you need it. Okay. It's still has a lot of berries on it. Yeah. I don't know when you know, the birds have plenty all of a sudden they show up and discover what's been there all winter. And then they bring all their friends and in two days, all the birds are gone, all the berries are gone. Is the way it seems to work? Same thing with my crab, apple trees, read. Some I winter king on last week. And I like to very thought to Berry's, wow. Yeah. So I guess who search thoroughly enough. They didn't they didn't go to the perfect holiday and wants to do with the king UC. They go to the hollies before they go to the winner. King. I would expect that they didn't is that the way it has been every year. Do you? Remember, I don't really remember. I help. Various earliest God on on this one. Yeah. Well, I think it's the temperature's going to drop like a rock sometime today or tomorrow. Right. So if you've got any plants out there that need protecting like I've got four or five things in pots didn't get planted. They are going if you're going to have to win the garage. Yeah. You guys get snow up there. We're getting mostly rain forecast. One to two inches of rain to light rain. It is. Keeps on me. So I just hope we haven't in the summer when we really need it. So it's good to get it. Before we got we're supposed to get a Paul of what's exit at the end of the month. Embarrassing phrases. It's good to have the moisture in the ground. I. Yeah. The one to two inches could cause damage. I think if it freezes we'll see we'll see we are getting a polar vortex at the end of the month. All right. Okay. Alan you take care..
