"From Toronto Your Company Snapped Travel thanks for coming on the podcast figure for having me Yup you got a really interesting company I saw Steph curry was wearing a hat said your company's name in the finals after the game we'll get into that later in the pod but bullets let's start at the beginning of your career you know how do you start to become the person you are today we're when did that happen so I went to the University of Waterloo studied computer science graduated in to that has nine five and went straight into a big company so I worked for a Bell Canada which is one of the largest telecommunications company he's in Canada of course and I was working there as a software developer so they're kind of to a point in my life where I was not really happy working at a big company I was not feeling like I was accomplishing anything it just felt a little bit doc in a bit of a routine in a really wanted to do something else oh so what I started to do is started to just do some coding side project thanks so in two thousand eight I started to build facebook games so this is you know before a lot of people's time times but facebook wasn't on mobile was only desktop and people would build facebook games like Farmville was the most famous one right so sorry Oh facebook games on the side There was an intern who was also a bell Canada in also started to go facebook games on the side and then we started chatting and we said hey how will you make money off your facebook Games WanNa we build an ad network specifically for facebook games so that's how it started quitting Alabel my co-founder kristaps never went back to bell never went back to school and we started that company I'd Parlor in over three years he grew it to be one of the largest facebook ad optimization companies in the world managed over one hundred million dollars of ad spend and ended up selling that company years later well and it all started just with simple side project of building games that lived on facebook yeah I mean it was just it was just of doing something as a side Gig and it was the entrepeneurship curiosity in just kind of having fun with it and I mean you quickly realize once you start aside Gig especially if it starts to get some traction you'll very quickly realize how much more fun that is than your big company job in natural that I start spending evenings and weekends working on it and so just do this full-time right I was of course in a fortunate position not everyone's entitled Fortunate Position But I was an unfortunate that position that you know I was single I was living at home with my parents didn't have any major financial dependencies on it's all I got a mortgage kids or anything like that so I was able to take that risk I was able to say let me quit my job about let me do this fulltime in the worst case scenario of this doesn't work out they can always try and get another full time another full time job right I love it and we talk a lot on this podcast about just kind of the merits of I projects like there's the the upside is really limitless and the downside is pretty minimal I mean it's like you start testing something out you build a game like just something passionate if it works starts to show some signs of of working then great you can put a little more effort into it a little more resources but but if not then like you know there's nothing lost you can just tell society all your friends are like Oh yeah you know I didn't really spend much time on that it just it just wasn't for me it didn't work out but if it does work it's like this is the this could be something here yeah for sure I mean I I always tell people that like I mean if you're in a full time job you're the nine to five that's great light you should really only be in that job if you're actually learning in developing and you should always think about what you can do to learn and grow and outside of that job as well as after hours weekends I mean of course you could spend your time just hanging out watching TV doing what you need to do but William Order to make progress you should spend some of those evening weekend hours on whatever it is you're passionate about or side gigs in that's can unlock a great opportunity. Yup I mean this podcast was and still is a side thing and the way that I think about it is just like when I think about it brings I think about it being delightful versus you know my main thing it's still another start up but it's like that one I set I put these huge expectations on I think a lot of it has to do with expectations setting like a side project you say this is this'll be a side project and like the expectations are pretty minimal purchase your real thing you put these like super lofty goals and like it's tough to reach them it stressful so yeah it's it's it's interesting hearing you talk about this okay so you leave bell you start this company really well then and then and then you sell it like what was that like yeah well I mean there's a lot that happened between opposite starting the company and selling it one thing that would like to point out is a about a urine so but six months to a year into it I actually moved to Silicon Valley Capello does specifically and worked at a Sunnyvale for almost a year and again this was one of those sort of leap of faith moment so he was really just myself and my co-founder at that time we were just kind of you know messing around not really knowing what we were doing and there was this program through the Canadian government whether basically like hey you gotta pay for your own flight and accommodation but we're GONNA set you up in work out of this incubator called the plug and play center in Sunnyvale and you're gonna be able to live in work in San Francisco in Silicone Valley For six months I was like again what's the harm in doing that right so so I did that I spent some time out there in it was amazing when you use around yourself like-minded people you surround yourself with entrepreneurs Funny story ends up living with someone who worked at Facebook we were building facebook Ad Network so obviously there was a lot of opportunity in networking there and then something really interesting happens so we were serving the ads within within facebook apps and then around the time facebook launched something called the ads. API The ads he is essentially meant that you could now buy ads directly on facebook on desktop or on mobile that will a mobile APP programmatic buy ads on facebook in because we had done all this stuff with this facebook display not work because uh-huh I've lived with facebook sales guy I was networking and I was in that environment we were actually one of the few companies to get access to the FACEBOOK ADS API that was a great experience building the company and then new came a certain point in time where it essentially felt like the right time to sell the company and we were getting a Lotta doubt inquiries but more importantly the business was actually getting in order and heart because the facebook ads API that was more competition margins we're getting squeezed sale cycles we're getting longer so so we decided that hey this is this is a good time to to think about the opportunities that we ended up selling the company to add knowledge while and so you know I like how you're talking about the journey of just kind of not putting uncertainty ahead of opportunity it's like lots moved to Silicon Valley what what could I lose is and then you have this you build this deep network there people somewhere thinkers tell you what do you think if you if you didn't move to Silicon Valley the company would have had a similar dri no I I I really don't think so and I I'm a I tell everybody if you if you are attacked entrepreneur in you have the opportunity to go live in the Bali Whether it be San Francisco Paolo Alto or whatever it is like just go right and there's no there's no there's no beating get fine comeback come back to Toronto Build Your Business or or building business anywhere but you extended amount of time in Silicon Valley it's one thing to fly in and out and do meetings but it's something else to live there in network there make friends there because there's no place like that if you're a tech entrepreneur right okay I mean I totally buy that I'm seeing I'm seeing that now these are things that like you start a business and you don't you don't know and then you go through it for a little while I I have so many people who come to me and the asks me at all so I have this opportunity to go should I go should I not go don't even give me your logic don't even give me a reason even give me a pros and cons of just go right so go get out there spent some time out there is definitely going to be worth yet okay so you go you make all these connections you come back to Toronto Continue Building the company you sell the company is that like a life changing event or you like set for life after selling this yeah I mean unless I go and do something stupid yeah it was it was it was great I mean we actually talk no outside investment for parlor it was it was a significant exit so yeah that's that that was okay great like I am now you know

"Oh, he did miss this combine drills due to a groin injury. But this is the guy who was so productive, Mark. And he now joins the parade of Alabama running back selected in the first or second round under Nick Sabin. Think about the the names Derrick Henry being one. Of course. I mean, there's so many guys who've come out of that offense of system there that have been great at the next level. And we'll see chess Jacobs continues that tradition. Mark Mark Ingram. One. Richardson was the only one that's heard out to be an absolute boss with the Cleveland Browns. But he certainly got a lot of us and listen there was a knock on Jacobs INSERM of him never being the guy down in Alabama. But I actually think that's great for him. And the reason why I think it's great for him. Is that he did not get abused? Collegiately? He did not get a lot of you. Look at one hundred twenty carries this past year. They use a lot of him a lot in the offense where he would take the direct snap to center around third and short and fourth and shorts that convert yards. You Josh shake because I know he didn't run on fat forty time. But Amy you and I are in agreement. I love him as a player. I think he's going to be a star day one out in Oakland. And you look at the his ability to make people miss in short spaces his quick feet. I think that translate. And I only I think it helps them as at NFL running back that he did not get used was not the primary tailback down at Alabama. Yeah. You only have so many hits in your body as a running back with the clock. Eight speeds up increment. Mentally, the more years the more pounding you take on your body. So I'm a big fan. Oakland Raiders second pick in the first round is running back. In fact, the only running back taken so far Josh Jacobs Alabel out of Alabama. He's Marc Malusis. I'm Amy Lawrence. You're listening to the two thousand nineteen NFL draft coverage here on CBS sports radio. And at this point, we would like to pause fifteen seconds for our station. ID? Listening.

"For both franchises very big game for both young quarterbacks. I think it's the Rams game to win their the more versatile group their home. I think they win it. Give me the Rams minus seven game number two. Moving to Sunday. Obviously we've been to this place before. I remember. I remember the first playoff game. Pau sells one in Foxborough with the pets. I remember the AFC title game when he beat Jacksonville and went to the championship went to the Super Bowl against the Packers that first year when he be built that franchise for muffing. I mean, I mean from nothing. Alabel Tech's done with it has been amazing. And they've had we've watched the generation of what they've accomplished the numbers in this game. Staggering okay. Brady seven zero against rivers. The pats are eight knowing their list. Since two thousand twelve the right now in a playoff at home in Foxborough. We know how good they are on the road. And even the word this week out of Foxborough was that the pats were healthier and sharper than they've been the entire season. If the pats win this game they win it with their defense their offense. No longer can win these games. It's not the same. They don't have a deep threat. He's been a little off his game. I don't love the offensive line. They don't have deep weapons. I think the charges match up very well with them. I think this game comes down to the defensive fronts, and which one exerts more pressure on the opposing quarterback. I think the pats will do some I think the charges will produce more. Is very hard.

"But he did have some love for one Steeler Alabel took to Instagram to show. He is voting for his replacement James Connor to make the Pro Bowl James deserves Pro Bowl. Now, I forgot the you even that vote on the Pro Bowl. I'm surprised that he got James Connor an Instagram account that must be hard. You know? 'cause there must have been a ton of James Connors before. What's what is love you just? You just. For at wolf because someone else had it. And so I bought it from her. Did you pay? I'm not telling you, what did you? The today show took care of it. So you didn't have to pay about the employer paid. That's okay. Anyway. Anyway, John how many lies us wanna talk about L bell? And that was nice of him to give James Connor a lot of love. You could see how that may not have been the case. But it was so it's nice not much more intrigued by this whole pace because I was. Okay. I'll explain to the break time for stores. Start your morning. That's the unexpected energy of Exxon Mobil has tech fax baller met the Philly media yesterday among other things was asked about Marquel full shooting. Woes Butler said that from what he can sell a lot of things are mental. What you make Butler's comments Nick accurate? I don't think it's necessary. I think that the this doesn't help Marquel Foltz if it is mental that his newest all star teammate is publicly speculating about what's going on. I know he's asked a question. I think there's a lot of ways Santa this without saying, it was just trying to be honest. But Jimmy Butler is honesty is caused them some trouble in his career. I listened to the whole press conference. And when you listen to it in real time, it wasn't if he was trying to say something negative towards Marco Marquel? So the fact is he saying ninety percent of things in the NBA are mental. This is how you have to overcome them. You get in the gym, and you work on it. And you just keep working, hard and heart. Those are the things that he was talking about. So. It's not Jimmy. It's not Jimmy Butler, faulting canes shoe, which should be to say the guy. Just fate the free throw have you seen someone do that in the NBA? So I would say unless he went to some some spasm a, right? I would say this the ball slipped. That's I'm just telling you what he said. I'm just telling you what he said moving onto college football, not many changes in the playoff rankings. In fact, the top ten state exactly the same see at this point. Can anyone beat Alabama? Yeah. Because their quarterback is starting to get a little gimpy if he gets knocked out of one of these games. He got knocked out last game in the third quarter that knee is not getting any better. And I know Nick saving those practices not getting any easier. So if Alabama quarterback happens to get her. Yes, I do believe Alabama we'll lose. And Jalen right now is not healthy their backup quarterback there. One. That led him to choose free natural not that good either. Sure. Go on the ground and pound Jalen comeback in there. But I still think they would be not as heavy favorites. I still think they'd be the favorites. We've found out today. Jalen hurts the quarterback. I LT gentler. The rest away there's still favored starting quarterback. I'll take the field. I'll take the field. Absolutely. Because that passing attack them five star. All that speed. They got on offense all that isn't a gated because they don't have a downfield passing game with Jalen. Okay. All right. Let's move onto the pro game with poor field conditions in Mexico City. The NFL has officially moved and rightfully so it's Monday night's much anticipated game between the chiefs and Rams. Comes up to Los Angeles..

But you've got problems the boats for leaking. I one time I went down to the this is in the off season Tate Fraser, so I will go down to Pebble Beach every year when I worked for the raiders, and it was one year bell check was playing in. And this is a Saturday afternoon Bella checks playing in in the pro-am. And so I went down there. And I follow him around. The course, and I'm like telling them about the holes because I played Tiger Woods so damn much. I knew the course like the back of my hand, you know, not that I play golf. Yeah. I'm like you can't hit it over there. Bill. You can't hit it over there. You know, like you can't do that. Right. And he's like what the fuck. Are you talking about you don't play golf? I said. Yeah. But I play Tiger Woods. But anyway, so me why I'm on the sixteenth hole. Right. And my my cell phone goes off and it's out Davis. And he starts where are you? I said, well, I'm at Pebble Beach hanging Alabel check. And he says do fucking realize Roma's burning and I'm like Rome is burning. Didn't know we were in LA. I mean, we're almost burning back here. Get your ass back here. The work. You know, and I'm like, okay. All right. You know that of course, I didn't talk to me for about a week after that. But anyway, go head back. You know, like like seriously, the NFL is not a job like talk radio that you can get weekends off. Okay. I'm sorry. It's not you live in the NFL. You don't work in the NFL you live in the NFL. And if you don't live in the NFL you get a product like the Cowboys put out on on Monday night. That's what you get if you're happy with that. Enjoy I want to know when will it be the time that Jerry actually does want to change things because it does seem he never change. You can't change. He's he's never chain. He's never going to making money. Well Well that that was. was. Catholic fans. Boycotted the games. Didn't go to watch this team plays at the only time that we see Jerry make some drastic changes. Because the bottom line is that he is still, you know, the bottom line, and he's still making money at the end of the day. No matter what if they're eight of their foreign twelve of their fourteen into the Cowboys are still profiting more than most any team in the NFL. So it doesn't hurt his bottom line. Now. This game always has great significance. When it comes to winning the SEC west Alabel. This goes to present a lot of good big fast players out there. I think they're going to be playing with pretty nasty intentions that approach to this game should be like another game. This is going to be a hard-fought game, you know, up front within a passing game as well. I think within all cylinders of specialties. I think it's going to be. Team that we won't be would need to be. Can you execute walk? The guy you're supposed to blocks and get moving on them. Put your hands in the right place. You come into tiger stadium. What if you're a safety on that play? And I have a receiver running running at me in his fourth goal receiver. Okay. He's off to the races. Do I hit you? Well, I'm just I'm just trying to figure out like, physically, what do you lead with? We are. We are. We tackling like elbow I now or I just don't I don't understand. understand it. I know we talked about it before, like they're going to do an, they're gonna call more play more penalties now on the preseason and examine it and figure out what is and what is not a penalty. But I just physically, I don't understand what you're supposed to leave with their what are supposed to do. Hug him. Usually the please don't run pass me. Maybe that'll work finally Fridays nights in any indication. The patriots still have some work to do before the season kicks off. They struggled a lot in the twenty five, fourteen loss to the Panthers and Bella chick had this after the game. Panthers obviously did a good job tonight. Coach aveer is their team played well in all three days of the game. And. Outplayed us across the board four quarters. So. We got a lot of work to do wasn't it wasn't any part of the game was very competitive. Back to work and. See if we can find a way to do things better than we did tonight. That sound bite with all three phases of the game in it starts. I'm telling you this New England receiving corps in September. No Julian Edelman, Philip door set. They're gonna depend on him. He was a marginal bust in Indy. I mean, I know everybody loves Brady. I love Brady Alabel check, but this is different this year. You know, you probably right, but I just can't. I can't come around to doubt in the patriots yet. I've suffered with the patriots for too long. I just I'm not ready to write them off yet. I get it. I get it bills bills, not convincing me of anything. He, he went back to the room and out of scotch him. I mean, I've just we've seen this many times before I know, but it feels different. I've been on this for two months this since April. This is their Eric decker retired. Their fourteenth receiver moves in April. Third, it feels it feels like mayhem. It feels like then you remember that it's the patriots and then they go in and Super Bowl. Just annoyed he doesn't. I don't know. I don't feel this time. It feels real. I don't. Maybe I'm wrong. Let's see. Joy the news. Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by heard, lie. The most decorated guys to ever play the game a hall of Famer. That's it because he leaves undisputed and he goes in works out and I get you twice a year. So let me start with this Brady receivers. Are we freaking out or or we looking at a reality where Chris HOGAN is the guy? Yeah. This is bad as I've seen is also call them. You mean. Three guys got cut air decker with retired two years ago. He just telling me about until yesterday, what they call the shot. Flip player. His body is failed him and he's lost confidence. You watch him play in the games. He's like, I shouldn't be here. So very, very cold night will freezing was also rainy. Nine am night, and I was like surrounded by a lot a lot. Of young people, and I thought we might history this is going to to be. We are going to have a law in a in a few years. Abortion is on the on the public agenda. Of course, I'm sure it's not going to be any politician in this country is willing to take a political position who is not going to talk about. He's supposed to Sean her position about abortion anymore. This is something very new for us. So in a way I was happy because things like that on device that are sold officials are process our process town on that rainy night that cold rainy night described the scene outside of congress. Was the bided in the middle in one of the size were those who were against the war Sean and the USA bliss cars on the loose Carson said, we save the two lives and on the other side where we with the risk guard and we we, those who are trying to push for the community of abortion. It was amazing amount of people that were there. Unfortunately, the main media didn't cover how many people were on the green side, of course, on the on the blue Siwa less because they did immobilization trees before. So it were less people there. But what I saw was a lot of people like everyone was using these green scarf, the young people, and also the people they were having all they face painted with with a purple on on green. Honestly, people were kind of happy. I think the most. Disappointed worthy young people. This is the first time the people are in this March. I mean, amnesty has been in all these women marched for years, and we never saw such a lot of young people in this kind of Mars. What does that tell you? For me. I mean, these people really, really to these scouts, if from the from these people are going to vote next year, we have elections here not in Tina, and they are going to to both probably taking that into account, which sort of a push was there in the lead up in the final days to this vote from the Catholic church? Well, this was this was really interesting because when the lowest when the lowest discussing at the at the lower chamber, the we, we didn't see like the church very, very moving at that point. But when the lowest passing in the lower chamber after that, the church really, really nice. It's organized itself and start to move on and they are effective. You know, they are effective moving their victim, moving the people. They are very fitting also..
