Alabama Will Now Allow Yoga in Its Public Schools

"That yoga was banned in Alabama schools? The ban has been lifted. There are conditions, though, ABC is Dave Packer explains. After a nearly three decade ban, yoga is once again allowed to be taught in Alabama's public schools. But in a concession with the state's religious conservatives, many of the hallmarks of the practice will still be banned. Teachers can't say NAMA stay two students students can't chant use the sound home as a mantra. And Sanskrit names proposes cannot be used. And if someone slips, the lawmaker who wrote the bill says there won't be any yoga Police on patrol for wayward homes.

"I feel like we've done a good job with our kids. I think we need to be out here down in the southeast part of the state. You'll never have to convince Mark Rose of the need for football. He played for the legendary coach Pat Dye at Auburn. He's been a high school head coach for 23 years. He's currently at Russell County High. And he was the fifth fastest in Alabama TTO win 100 games, So it's notable when Rose says kids shouldn't be playing during a pandemic. Yeah, I mean, it's flat out child exploitation. Of course, kids want to play. But we are charged to protect them, and he can't Rose says because of a lack of testing. Kids get tested when they show symptoms. But in the state High School Athletic Association's Covad protocols there's not a testing policy, and that he says, is reckless and dangerous. We're breaking every rule that every doctor in the world says. We're not going face to face school. We're running players into each other all week and send them home untested. And then on Friday night, they want us to go out there and run them in 100 of our sideline and 100 on the other sideline. And All we know is that nobody out there have been tested. Rose says an asymptomatic outbreak on his team landed a 33 year old assistant coach in intensive care for nearly two weeks and sickened a player's mother. The risk of spread is greater, he says, in his rural county, where many of his players live in multi generational homes. I guess What Coach Rose would like to do is we have a state or some entity, paper, the testing for all the students and the coaches. Ron Ingram is Thea's assistant director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. That would be admirable. If the funding was there. It's not in Alabama or most other states. Ingram says. Alabama acknowledges the risk of football and Corona virus. Believes it can be mitigated with safety protocols and he hands they still need to figure out whether football is the potential spreader. Mark Rose fears right now we don't have enough data to say that playing football upset really? That same teenager if he goes to the local McDonald's on a Friday night with his friends. That same risky still goes back home to the same parents into the same grand parents. If its data they're waiting for its coming, says Dr Michael Shingles. He's on a sports medicine committee advising high schools in Michigan, which yesterday reinstated high school football after earlier canceling it for the fall. We're gonna have ahh German in the United States right out because their states They're going to do this whole states. They're not going to find out probably in the next couple months from people getting sick and having major issues Mark rose in Alabama would rather not have high school football players and their families be in his words. GUINEA pigs, Rose says he doesn't speak for officials in this school district. But he does for many other coaches who fear losing their jobs if they speak out. Rose was bracing for a showdown when he made it clear he would not coach his team tonight in their season opening game to protest playing without testing. But this week the virus intervened. One of his players tested positive, possibly exposing as many as two dozen teammates practices or shut down. Tonight's game is off, and Rose says it's uncertain when his Russell County Warriors will play football again. Tom Goldman. NPR news This's NPR news. I'm Josh Barrow, host of left, right and Centre. "Another hot summer day for us. Lots of sunshine about 94 for the high again this afternoon. And Oh yes, The humidity will be back as well. About a 30% chance of those afternoon showers today. Right now, Plenty of sunshine. We've got 75 Alabama's Morning news. So what about high school sports this fall? Leah Brandon has more on this in just a couple of minutes. But first Fox News covers the world. Fox News. I'm 1,000,000 Wu. President Trump says he's ready when a Corona virus vaccine is ready. They thought it was right to take it first. Or I take it last in an exclusive with Fox News, saying he'll go along with the recommendation of his taskforce. Senate Republicans today set to unveil a Corona virus relief bill likely to include this more direct payments to Americans. Money for schools to reopen safely additional funds for testing in liability protections for businesses. But it seems Democrats are far from on board. Major second points include the extended unemployment benefits and the president's pushed for a payroll tax cuts, saying he may not sign anything if it doesn't include that box is Griff Jenkins and first time claims for jobless help last week, coming in at one point for one million that is above expectations. And roughly the 18th straight week numbers came in above America's listening. High school sports competitions allowed to take place during the fall term. That's the word from the Alabama High School Athletic Association, following a meeting at the Central Board of Control Association says football teams can start practicing in helmets and shorts on Monday Free Corona virus tests being offered in Birmingham, Sandra Cooper says she decided to get tested and expects to get the results quickly, They said in 48 I was sort of what it was, and that's really good that turnaround. It's absolutely What we all need to come and get this thing on the control the testing offered by Alabama Regional medical services, and he was Alabama's Mr Basketball In 2006 Stanley Robinson was found dead at a Birmingham home. He was a standout at Helfman Hi later playing for UConn, the coroner's office, saying no sign of foul play. Robinson was 32. I'm Leah Brandon. And this is Alabama's morning news. Now back to your host. Here's J T really, Thank you very much. It is 7 34 But tell you what talking about sports and what's going to be happening in this fall. I think that obviously the jury's still out on where we're going with all this, but It's not looking real good. Still no word on what's gonna happen with SEC. Football. Morgan Freeman. I'm talking Facebook live. Yeah, that's him. Talk about restaurants down in Gulf shores. It is we're doing Facebook live and doing the show. Because if you're listening, you're like, what are you talking about? Morgan Freeman. He goes to a restaurant Gulf shores that we went to this past week, and it is so delicious called big fish anyway. All right, sports. This the fall is just going to be all over the map. The SEC still has not come out and said, Here's what we're going to do. You know, the decision's got to be here pretty soon on all of them. NFL says. If you're going, you gotta wear a mask. Yeah, Yesterday the NFL announcer fan to attend the games this season will be required to wear masks. Not all teams are allowing all fans, but the Atlanta Falcons just announced. They're going to see it up to about 20,000 people for their home games that stadium there. Normally holds about 141,000 people, so 20,000 fans In a big football stadium like that. I guess it's better than nine. But it's going to be so different this year. No doubt about it. No word on what's gonna be happening with Alabama and Auburn in schools. And everybody's wanted No, not just fans, but the coaches and players as well. But right now Ah, it's Goa Sze usual. But I don't see that happen. They're just waiting on the deadline of when that decision has to be made to make it hoping it's a miracle drop from the sky, and we can allow all the fans back in there. Could you imagine going toe? Brian? Danny Stadium this fall full packed. Stay. I'm not sure you know I jump into then, would you Um But the good news is Dr SAG feels pretty good about the direction we're headed. Now, with all the social distancing. We've re kind of introduced ourselves, too, and re committed to in the masks that were wearing now more people around the country are wearing masks. Now, more people are buying into it saying, Look, it's a wall of protection. If you've got one, and I've got one That's better than neither one of us having him on. At least there's something there. And that does make a difference. I understand people, are you 00 you know, those particles get through those masks and those cloth mask so they're not total proof total 100% proof. You know of keeping the virus away from you. But still It's something all right, also going on. We're not washing her hands in an average of eight times a day that is picked up. Obviously. That's up from five before the virus hit. We wash on an average of 19 seconds, up from 13 seconds, according to a survey here. But almost one in eight people still don't always wash their hands. After using the bathroom. What's matter with you people get in there. Wash your hands, all right, coming up. I love our next guest. He's here occasionally with us and always bringing it big time. "Last night. The Alabama High School Athletic Association is set to announce last night tomorrow so it would be today fall sports or go without delays. Practice can begin on Monday, all students able to participate. Bandon cheer are deemed essential and can attend home in away games with no fan limitation in all of Holland right now, which is interesting, local says local systems will be able to alter This potentially in all of that, But we know that's one. That's an effect in all of this, As we look, certainly at the college level, we know Alabama and its importance to the football landscape there. What could potentially be precedent being set in other parts of the state are well, yeah, I mean, we've seen other states, the bigger States, California. There is no Ah high school football going to be going on this fall. Nothing going on this fall in sports in California. We know in Texas. They've delayed the bigger I think five and six class a little bit the other class. I think they're starting at the normal time. So those 2 to 2 of the biggest, especially recruiting states, but high school football places in the country, one not having any of it. The other Still going to have it and then we trickle down. You tested Alabama. I know here in Connecticut, certainly not known as a great football state, but they last week started their practices for football, So I think you're going to see in most places. You're going to see some high school football, which really kind of made. I think some some eyebrows go up that said, California is not going to do it. And you're really gonna have to start wondering about college football for California teams as well. Given the state they're in They're about to pass. I think New York in covert deaths. I believe if I was reading correctly there, so it's been tough there and they're closing things down again. What sports may actually happen out there? One. I guess that's the thing is, you're looking at each situation relative to its backdrop of Connecticut, saying it's starting sports up again. Connecticut has been one of the very few states that has things trending in the right direction from one of the few times we've been proud rest we have, and I quickly want to say it's either death or covert cases. I one of the two they were passing New York. California has been a hotbed of this really since the beginning, and a lot of this, and it's been a state that's been at the center off a lot of this now, So I believe if this was highly questionable at this 20.3 banana phone would ring Poppy would pick it up. And it would be the Bluejays on the phone wondering of Alabama had any spots for them. How about eventually come and play down there? But that's what I mean. We talk about the movers and shakers in all this. Alabama, the SEC all the surrounding decisions made in that area that are going to have probably a massive effect on what happens in the world of college football. I get this is high school not going to react to too much to it. But this is one of the few places that we've seen staying saying Come out very publicly were going full steam ahead. No fan restriction. Yeah, and you wonder all these states that have a high school football. Let's just take it all the way down there. Probably gonna have little league football as well. I would imagine. If you're doing high school, it would go down. You know, there's a lot of decisions to be made some, obviously, in the bigger scope like schools, opening, whether they're going to open and I mean like grade schools and high schools are on the country. Not so much colleges so and then sports to go along with it, But you're right. Alabama basically saying, we're open for business fan, and that's That's the biggest difference. Fans and everything you know, and I didn't read in there. Like the NFL has said. If you're going to have fans, you have to wear a mask. I didn't see that. I don't know if that's been stated in Alabama. If there are fans at these games do they have to wear any kind of face covering it all? I don't know what I didn't see that in there. I have not either. But that is worth noting that Brian McCarthy cannot yesterday for the NFL and said any fans that over the course of this season and all because we know that situation is going to be flushed, and I'm sure even in places like New Jersey, where right now it's no fans. For this. If it it all becomes a possibility. I'm sure they'll explore it. And if they do, you're gonna have to where they are. I would say it's going to be like what NASCAR is doing and what like the PGA is doing right. NASCAR didn't have fans for the first few races, and they slowly built up to their All Star race on July 15th. At between 20 and 30,000 fans. They're the PGA was going to start having fans. They pushed it a little bit, But soon they're going to start having fans so you could probably see now again. It isn't until you know until September 10th or whatever it is that the NFL season starts. We'll see where we are then. But you think maybe it'll start without fans and then lead to having fans and again. If you do you have to come in with that face mask, and I think it's just again in the interest of doing as much as you can early on in this process right now and for the NFL, they're going to have so many variables they need to worry about. The thing is, it's going to be enforcement, though, and we've talked about this. In a number of different guards, the NFL and this is not to compare the two activities at all. But we remember when NASCAR band the Confederate flag right, we said, because these racetracks tend to host fewer races over all right. There's a lot more resource is that you can devote for your one Cup series race at that level to finding scouring the scouring the track for and weeding out any of those Confederate flags to enforce that policy. With the NFL. While the game day re sources are certainly plentiful, you're playing a lot more games. In theory, you're you're a team and you're hosting X amount of home games every year. And so it's not putting it all into one when it comes to that that's going to be the difficult part. Um, is especially depending on how many fans you're allowed to have in the stadium is how you go about actually enforcing that policy and getting any teeth..

Coming up trade dispute aside, when it comes to the biggest emerging Tech Trends, we're does the US stand against China from digital payments to facial recognition tech where the race has settled as of late and how cyber safe is this race. Anyway, that's after these tech headlines. Speaking of China's Weiwei technologies is delaying the release of its much hyped foldable smartphone. It is delayed until September from previously announced launch date of June at the journals Delyth tech conference in Hong Kong last week, Vincent Pang. It senior vice president said the move follows Samsung's decision to delay the late April launch of its galaxy fold after the device reviewers discovered problems with its foldable screen while way continues to remain in testing mode with Mr. Pang adding that the company is moving to release the device, quote as early as we can and quote. Lyrics site. Genius media group accuses Google of lifting its content. Here's the story genius says Google made a subtle change to some of the songs on its website, alternating the lyrics apostrophes between straight apostrophes and curly single, quote marks there is a difference, that's according to genius. Google denies wrongdoing. The complaints come amid mounting concerns over the business practices of Google and other tech giants, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that the Justice department is gearing up for a new anti-trust probe into the search company. And you reporting shows that car companies are stepping up efforts to tackle distracted driving from installing cameras to new monitoring tech that detects wanna driver's attention. Wanders from the road case in point, Volvo will start using new I tracking devices across his light up over the next few years in a system that would send an alert when a driver's eyes or verdict for too long Subaru, for its part installed a similar driver monitoring system and its forced or crossover last year. And BMW also is introduced trackers in a limited number of models, combating distracted driving has long been frustrating challenge for car companies regulators and law enforcement. And according to the journal, safety and insurance groups say distraction related deaths are likely much higher because many drivers are reluctant to admit to mobile use. After an accident coming up checking in on where the US ranks among some of the biggest global Tech Trends on the horizon, and how safe we are among them the university of Alabama school of law online choose between. Checking in on some of the biggest global Tech Trends while concepts like facial recognition check and digital finance continued to face much pushback in the US, some of the world's biggest tech companies are telling a slightly different story. Fresh off the stage at WSJ's de live conference in Hong Kong. The CEO of online travel company, booking Glenn Fogel, says China in particular, is using facial recognition to increase efficiency noting. The country is a head of the US in digital payments, and fischel recognition, nobody Lee, you is thinking all Ali pay, or we chat with that, but people live on that in China. And one of the biggest things are some of the technology differences. So, for example, things being really, picked up fast in, in China in general facial recognition in China, where they're using it to make it more efficient to get through an airport or any type of security thing. And this became more efficient, d she spans beyond China. And as we creep into the world. Of digital regulation. New such tech is beginning to cause headaches for companies who have customers worldwide different parts of the world, different legal jurisdictions that are coming up with different rules, Judea GDP are in Europe. You got this California law and all sorts of different things coming up in the questions. Sometimes I conflict in the makes it really hard for a global player, especially when you have customers who are going all these different jurisdictions, which one applies. How do you do it? How do you match that up? That's costly. It'd be lovely if there was sort of one Google regulation privacy, we've got a little follow that, and where do you store, the data incredibly complex issues. We got a lot of people working on it again, from my point of view of the CEO. I just make sure that it'd be understands all of our employees understands. How important it is to make sure we do. What is right? Which is maintaining the privacy for our customers because he had don't do that. You lose that trust. And you lose that trust you lose the consumer that's on. We don't want to have happened leads us to the very important question of cybersecurity at WSJ's recent CFO network annual meeting in wash. Washington. We learn how CFO's grapple to figure out how much cyber security spending is enough. Judith Pinto, managing director at promontory financial has more on where the business of cybersecurity goes from here encryption is going to need to change an understanding sort of the impacts with what you have is really critical, the risk, we have with a lot of these technologies that are very powerful. Whether it's quantum computing or AI machine learning is the bad actors have access to the same tools and oftentimes are very well funded and trained in how best use these we're seeing a lot of firms trying to the game because the impact could be huge for more on what the biggest tech leaders have to say on the matter, head to wsJcom that does it for the tech news briefing from the newsroom in New York, I'm Tanya boost dose. "It's an interesting that the J J clinic. Clinic with the moments that it had to be separated. I appreciate the kademi for doing. There you go. All right. Well, there's there's the other nominee next stuff. We have the next for excellence in journalism. We have CBS Zion came love this camera. Loved it loved being able to see nothing but Zion for two straight hours. That is what I tune in for when I watch basketball. Congratulations CBS on the nomination. There. Also wanna nominate the guy who film coach K light. The guy who filled coach K lighting the minora during Hanako duke's campus, coach K gave like the weirdest sound bites. You've ever heard of. Oh my God. Please go look at that video the academy does not provide a right now. But, but it will definitely be out in the world you'd go check that out. It also led to me bringing up the story of the Maccabi embossing it. So I appreciate the kademi awarding coach K for that moment. And the guy who filmed it next up the next nominee for excellence journalism, we have grand couch, a friend of the program leaving the top three teams off the ballot. And then telling us he doesn't even want his AP vote. And this is why this has to be this is the funniest moment in in college basketball media when he was honored podcast, and the whole reason we have him on to defend his ballot. And he was he had so much honor in his ballot. In like, here's why I'm so principled in structured. And I've really thought about this, and I have this algorithm and on and on and on and he so he defends why leaves the top three teams in the country off of his ballot completely. And then he slips into there at the end. He's like, I don't even want to stupid vote. I've been trying to get rid of it for years. To perfect that is that is journalism at its finest also nominated for excellence in journalism is LeBron's HBO documentary called student athlete where he explained to the to the American people that college athletes are not paid. But this is crazy. And this is what I learned to this documentary the adults like the administrators in the NCAA themselves. They're actually making a lot of money. Yes. From from college sports. So very eye opening stuff there from the Brian James. We really appreciate that this documentary enlightened us through the the recruiting decision made by Nick Richards to go to play basketball Kentucky, we learned that he went to Kentucky because he likes the color blue light blue. Yes. So I thank you for that journalism next up next time he for excellence journalism. We have Jay Bilas calling the head of the Alabama High School Athletic association to tell him he's wrong. He's wrong about inch wrong may aura may Ori may ory. Devon for may already Davenport. Yeah. The the the yeah. The we we remember that saga. The the remember the sagas was deemed an. Jay wrote this long he writes, his long article where he's quoting the the Alabama High School Athletic association, stricter because he he called them. It was like, sir. Explain yourself. It's wrong. It's wrong. So great journalism. They're j get on the phones next nominee is Michael avenues tweet. You gotta say, right. It's not as he calls himself like Godley. Oh, he's. Like, I got. All right. Our next nominee is Michael Nadi. I've really he would be. I want him on the podcast. Explain that what he said. So we need to treat them, right? His his tweet, read and Duke dot dot com. That is now he's tweeted a lot of stuff. He said a lot of stuff. But the cabbie says. Canopy was clear that the only thing being nominated is his one three said and Duke dot dot dot. Yes. So great journalism there. We really appreciate that. I I appreciate the specificity of the academy as well. I appreciate them being very specific. With all things. The next time we have for excellence in journalism as a colleague of ours. A main who came on the program with us. Mr John Gonzalez, traveling all the way to Greece to hang out with his best, buddy. "Cool. So the kitchen will be very active today will make it spending time, you never know not just on Wednesdays. But it could spend today Greg on vacation back tomorrow. Right. So yesterday something happened to me. That I haven't done in a long time it was somewhat enjoyable, but at the same time, I knew I was missing something. And that is that J C, you know, the high school association has this little role that. That if you don't have a buzz whatever lined up for the kids, they can't drive themselves to games that that they're playing in JC plays baseball for high school. He goes to and they had what they call an area gain. And you know, you get normally have about three people three three or four teams in your area, depending on the size of the area. I guess and and so last night was one of those nights, and he had to go down south where Rick has scared us to death because sixty five I sixty five run nightmare north to south right through Alabama. When you get to Birmingham south. There's so much construction right now, and it's going to be nice. But right now, it's pretty ugly. It'll scare you to death. And so we had decided that we're not going to go on sixty five. Because like Rick said, hey, when I go the form, I don't get up on sixty five anymore. He says I got that rule. Well, and it's it's a beautiful drive down in that area. And so yesterday J C, and he came home from after school, and and we only had about twenty minutes to turn it around. You know, you know, eating, you know, doing whatever getting ready getting back out the door, and I guess in all the just everything moving. Try hurry. Traffic's bad of getting reports because normally JV plays in front of are getting all the reports from some of the JV parents that I know oh my gosh. Sixty five is all the traffic and people sending pictures of car sitting there. And I'm like, hey, let's hurry. Even though we're not going sixty five we need time. And I ran out and forgot my phone, and I get about maybe two to three minutes down the road in already out in traffic when I realized it. And and I said, oh my gosh. I forgot my phone and jaycee said you think we got time. And I said buddy, I don't think we do. I said we're going to be. I mean, it's going to be white knuckle and hurry hurry. I said, oh, we can just kind of as that way. And not be stressed. And I said I might have to use your phone during the game. I just text takes the family the group techs. Hey, dads on my phone tonight. But I, but I couldn't get that to all my friends. And or, you know, somebody needs to be book for the show Marco Polo you. Yeah. Yeah. So I knew all that was out. And there was no way for me to tell anybody that. So I'm hoping well, let me just tell my wife and kids, and and if they can find me, but I gotta tell you it was probably some of the most enjoyable hours. I've had in a long time here where I could just not worry about in free. Yeah. Yeah. And I had his phone. Of course, I told him I had fun with him. I said I was going to go through Snapchat and everything else. Like, we always do from time to time. Just joking. I'm joking. But he was he was like that was like knobs. There's just have your phone. I'll have it women case emergency. In case, you mom needs me. She can find me. She was working. She couldn't make the game. So anyway, I just was I was just like so stress-free during the time of no phone, so I get home and it's late y'all. It's late. I mean may. Four hours sleep is what I got because you know, anytime, and I don't know what it is. But anytime, you have these games where you know, you're you're traveling thirty to forty five minutes away. And then they don't start to six thirty or seven then you not finish into ten or ten fifteen. But then you gotta come home. So you I mean, and you're not and I had this happened to when you get home. It's not go right to your kind of jazz. What's going on? Everybody's starving and her you gotta get food and God forbid the drive through take less than twenty minutes. You know, because I guess at that point they're thinking, you know, I'm not in a hurry. It's ten it's ten ten fifteen. I'm on a hurry. You know? And so we finally get home. And so I go to my phone, and I see just the piles of Marco Polo's that I missed and all kinds of stuff just things just piled up the text messages, and I'm trying to reply alert. Hey, I'm sorry, man. I didn't have my phone. You know, all this kind of stuff. But it was just so nice just to sit back and go. Oh, man. I don't have my phone. And I'm like, why don't I do this more out of leave? My Greg does the best job of this especially on the weekends because we'll to reach out to him. But we won't hear from him. Like, he will not. And it's nothing. He's even told us because we talked about this Marco Polo. It's not that he is not watching what we're doing. Every six eight hours. He'll pick his phone read it watch it. And but he says, I just don't I don't really have anything to add phone back down. Yeah. And there is something freeing about it. And I don't do it enough. I need to take a day a week go about half a day without it just just throw it down. And and I try to do that the well the days that I took tried to take a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember what it was. I kind of did that. Yeah. I'll leave it in the bedroom. And I'll wear my watch. Sometimes from where I'm standing it'll sync up and get a message hit their here there. But it's nice free. Yeah. Yeah. How many times do you think? I went to the back pocket thanking my phone. Uncontrollably. When I didn't even need to and I'm like, we'll see. So what what am I doing? Anyway, just those phantom vibration. Yeah. Yeah. So everybody that really needed me. Sorry about that. And there was a lot of text messages and a lot of Markos, but and I missed out on all that. But some of you waking up today to to my text that you sent me late yesterday afternoon that I sent you at like eleven fifteen Levin thirty last night responding. So so sorry about that. But it was it was not it was weird because you were in that that that decision mode of do I turn around and go home. Is it worth it to go get it, do I just go without it? And the decision was made to go without it. Just just don't worry about it go without it now. But we were close enough to where we could have turned around just at the time coach told him he had to be there. Yeah. We'd have been cutting close, by the way. So when they they can't drive it's Alabama high school. So they can't drive their south. He by called him by out on that. Hey, y'all know. So so drove today. I don't know. What happens they can't play as the game forfeited if? Find out and have camera footage to some player. Drove us shit. You know, what's what's the rolling? Some maybe some I don't know maybe some other coach or I don't know maybe could turn them in or I don't know. What would be done? I have. No, hey, kid, hit a home run earlier. You know, he drove himself to the game. Right. You know, they take it off the scoreboard. I mean, what do they do? They have to punishment for what's the consequences. I don't know. I don't know..

"Experience backing it all up. Thirty four. Discussing the case of Maury Davenport. She's a senior Alabama high school plays for Charles Henderson high. And she's been out of basketball for a while she played on team USA last year, and as his routine for team USA, they often reimburse people for kind of their travel expenses and things like that. Well, her parents received a check for eight hundred fifty seven dollars and twenty cents. It's called under loss. Wages is the term. They use it in quotes. She actually helped team USA to a gold medal win. Well, Alabama's High School Athletic association, executive director said that she was ineligible. And for for that reason, she was sidelined since late November pending a decision by that that jurisdiction there, and she's considered the most popular basketball player in America Maury, Davenport, getting lots of attention people like Kobe Bryant's some of the big time basketball, folks, Jay Bilas. And others. Are kind of fighting her battle. So it also do what this check now team. Your say has said we sent the check in error. We we realized that she was an active student in high school. They said it was a self-described clerical error. More. He played in this. America's under eighteen championship in Mexico City in the lawsuit. The parents again, a temporary overruling of this temporary. Stay in this decision. The court will that any ruling by the A H S A, which is Alabama High School Athletic association that their daughter is or maybe in algebra participants of basketball for the two thousand eighteen twenty nine thousand season is invalid and or for an order declaring Devonport eligible now she was able to play on the weekend and actually played in a win. She scored twenty five points beating team their team won seventy two to seventeen eighteen points in the first half. Why matter couple of things once she's the top ranked senior in the country is going to be playing at Rutgers next year this decision this emergency motion allowed her to play and return immediately. But it all has to do with adult decisions that affect young people. And that's really the reason I brought it up if an organization whether it's the Alabama high school off. Athletic association. What's the NC double A, we've seen these stories before or w I a in Wisconsin? Adults make mistakes, but the children pay the price is that fair to the kids. Now, the H S A, again, Alabama's High School Athletic association said that by cashing that check. She vital violated their amateurism rules by deposit now. They've said they didn't realize that was an issue. They had asked about it. They said, yeah, that's normal people. Do it. They cash the checks. They offer him everybody as again, the stipend for the cost of competing on the team, but had violated those state bylaws Athletic Association bylaws and until that was. Adjudicated? She was out of out of basketball and inner senior year against star player is that fair tour. I don't think it is. Now, judge I think did the right thing any grants that emergency motion that allows her to play, but this story continues. And as I said, Alabama, they're fighting it. The executive director of that organization, the H A, they're fighting it. I don't think it's fair. Now, these things happen all the time. Switch with select teams. Now that you have in these these tournaments that are held both in the United States and overseas parents are often given that opportunity if you have a child that's going to move on. Or even still wants to play in their currencies. And that's the issue. It's different. If you're out of high school. And you're not gonna play college basketball. No, one cares. But if you're gonna play basketball, it does matter let's go to Linda Klein from Tulsa WTMJ. I disagree in essence that the parents didn't just go and cash the check the parents from what you're saying, they call the organization, and they asked if they should cash the check and they were told. Yes, it's fine. Go ahead and cash the check. Yeah. There's different reporting on that one story says, that's the case one story doesn't mention it. So there's there's different reporting on that. If that's the case, clearly, they would have an argument that can make a court if they were advised that that was the real now, I guess everybody's responsible for their own behavior. And I guess you really have to check these things out and. Yeah. Unless calls me, an attorney or something and saying, okay. You know, I mean, that's why even when you call for health insurance and stuff, I literally I call two or three times because you can get different answers from every person you talk to. In this case, the the Alabama High School Athletic association, they're not backing down. They're going to take this to the to its conclusion. They don't think she should be able to play. I just disagree. If you're advised that it's okay. Right. Other than having some thanks for the call Linda from calling from Pugh walkie. I think you have to. Tomorrow tosa, rather, I think you have to give the parents the benefit of the doubt here and you want people to play by the rules. You want it to be fair to everybody. I think you have to think about these things. And then look at it in a much different way. I don't wanna see this young woman's career ruined because of this. She actually was helping win a gold medal at this tournaments in Mexico City from what I understand at least from one of the counts her parents were asked or asked if they could cash the check and she would still be eligible, and they said, yes. The USA basketball has said it was a clerical error on their on their part, which issued a check in the first place. I think there's some some merit there. But the interesting case coming out of Alabama and high school start. These are not a dime a dozen. But they happen a lot. I guess you always have to be aware of what the rules are. But in this case, it seems like the parents did the right thing. And frankly, I don't have any problem with the actions that they took. All right coming up next is this an appropriate use of the police. I'll tell you what's happening next. Oh, you gotta give away. Those Neil young. Got a sell those Neil young tickets.

"Student cannot accept payment for loss of time or wages while participating in athletics. As part of expenses. Steve Savary's who heads that board sanctioned sanctioned Davenport by suspending her for the year the year. Now, the ruling appealed twice with Devonport losing both times is sparking outrage even NBA players like Chris Paul have tweeted, how is this even fair she shouldn't pay for someone else's mistake. This is crazy. But in a statement, Alabama High School Athletic association, central board of control president Johnny harden responded to the claims like this saying that impart that the if accepted is made to the rule for Davenport quote. There would no longer be a need for an amateur rule. The rules were applied equally to all athletes. Furthermore, most eligibility violations are the result of adults failing to follow the rules here. The student's mother as a certified. AH SA coach should have known the rules. The school's principal should have known the rules. The head basketball coach as not only a coach, but a former central board member should know the rules. Let's bring an ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas. He wrote a story about this on ESPN w called the maddening case of may Ori Davenport. And Steve Savary's for ESPN w j I know you spoke to Steve Savary's, the executive director of this of this committee. What did he have to say what was his main point as to why they're enforcing this rule on miss Davenport? Well, as made point was basically rules are rules in. There are no exceptions in the state of Alabama. Even though that the young woman, Mary Davenport did absolutely nothing wrong. And this was nothing more than a one off a clerical error. And Mr Savary admitted to me that this has never happened before in the state of Alabama. It's not expected to happen again. But he went into sort of sounded honestly a little bit like Avery Brundage. When he started talking about this that if he were to make an exception in this case every rule would be open to being broken, and it would open Pandora's box. And they wouldn't have the ability to force any rule on their books, and it was sort of bizarre. Frankly unreasonable interpretation of. In the one case he says, it's not going to happen again. In the other case, he brings up the slippery slope argument that we know as lawyers that if we make the exception here who knows where this could go. Now, let me ask you this though, he did mention as did the president of this committee. They mentioned that her mother is a coach that the coach others should've known once this money came in. What did you make of that? I think it's a misdirection. And frankly in the statement that the Alabama High School Athletic association, put out there were there were misrepresentations. Frankly, falsehoods won a lot of things that were misleading. Well, first of all they said that a player another high school player that was on that international team USA basketball team from Illinois got the check from USA basketball did not cash it call the Athletic Association, and then sent the check back on cashed that's false. And now the Alabama High School Athletic association knows it's false. And they have not corrected it and they're saving. They've known as falls for about twenty four hours now at least the Illinois player Anaya people's who's going to Notre Dame next year accepted. The check the same way my ory Devon port did when they found out in November. When USA basketball contacted them both she'd already cash the check she sent the money back like moreover, damn Mary damn. Did and the Eleanor Athletic Association said that's good enough for us as long as you sent the check back. No harm. No foul. You are eligible and Alabama handle the differently. But they're representing that the other young lady people's is eligible because she never cashed the check. And that's that's the difference. And frankly, that's not true. And look you don't wanna play. Gotcha here. Yeah. But you kind of say, well, wait a minute. Did the Alabama association lie intentionally or was it just an innocent mistake? And it's the same kind of same kind of analysis. Really, do you think it would be different? If this was a big time football players something Easter..

"It all checks out. Yeah. Interesting. You know, the funniest thing to me about this whole. I mean, it was a it was a great argument was put out to the world. I'm glad that people are picking up on the story because it is deserved to be discussed. You know, because it's such a a issue. That's you know, rampant because first of all team USA. How dumb are they in the financial department election this girl, check in the first place. I mean, that's that's pretty dumb. So there's there's some there's some figures we pointed there, but also Jay Bilas is wearing like under. Armor shoes like bringing you a sponsor segment by the new hover phantoms and then talking about this situation. So I mean, you know, I got I got to take everything with like you don't talk about tone. I'm going to tone that down a little bit, buddy. He's like spanking. I love where my Hct phantoms when I go and play pick up at the local YMCA. I am. I'm pro Bilas. I love bills. I think Bill was awesome. Especially there's somebody should he color commentators in college basketball on you know, who you are some of them. Listen to this podcast. You know, your your shitty. You know, who you are? Yeah. Wrong take that. It is just kidding. We love you Bilas bills one of the good ones. But and I and I like Bill a lot. But what I like more than anything is making fun of stuff. And I there's nothing more fun than than than Bill is just going nuts about the say, especially like taking these like no brainer. Like like, the Nazis or wrong. Like those positions. Yes. It's like you you find the evil villain where like everyone agrees like. Yeah. The guys kind of a dick, you know? I mean. Really? He's he's picked like the one case. Like, no one in the right mind is gonna easily this is raw. And he he just keeps you to say to. I'm making fun of him. I know Brits awesome. That uses a platform and tries to help these these these kids. Yeah. How do I religious? It is kind of a sterile that. He's just basically like this is wrong. Really say, and then leaves it to that. I mean, Braxton Beverly is a perfect example that to where it's just it's a no brainer decision. You know what I mean? It comes down to common sense everybody if they get in a room and talk about it can be figured out. But a lot of times the instability just makes decisions based on a rule book that they made up and then they go. Well, it's it's the rules that everyone goes didn't you make up those rules like forty years ago? They're like pass it is it is refreshing, though, that it wasn't the say this time, it was the Alabama High School Athletic association, so Bilas diversifying his his targets here. So thank you. Thank you. Jay, also, come on the pod, we won't have you on the podcast. Do you think would Alabama national title? They tweeted Jay Bilas roll tide like as if they're on the side, they're on the side of their their high school association. That'd be great. Moving on. I I wanna make this as I said there's a lot that went on and in basketball in college basketball this weekend. I wanna make good guy bag how guy the most extensive segment I wanna drag this thing out as much as possible. And I think I'm ready. I we did the good guy. We did the bag. I I wanna do a bad guy with a d. I also wanted to do a Brad guy. And then we can get to Kyle guy. Cows guy in cows guy. Are we down for this? 'cause I have I have a. I want to bring up to you. Yes. Please. Give me a bag because bad guy was originally a part of this segment we had to cut it because it was started. Like it never happened to call someone bad, especially when they couldn't get the differentiation between bag and bed. You know what I mean? But bad guy who do we have here. I want to I want the title the pie. This this episode of the podcast. Just be good guy. Bad guy, bad guy. Brad guy. Whatever the fuck is. Yes..
