"And Nome where all around the same age now growing up as kids. We watch the Today show right before you went to school. And the great personality on the Today show was Willard Scott. He was the weather, man. You guys remember Willard Scott? Of course. Sure. He was the first weatherman. I think whoever became a celebrity in his own right before Al rocker. There was Willard Scott. And by the way, we should try to get al on the show for a few minutes. Natalie today I think you texted him because he replaced Willard. I believe as the weatherman on the Today show, and and that was great, great personality. But before that weatherman were Well, they were kind of race stages. Like you know, they just, uh, deliver deliver the weather, Not a lot of fun, but I'm getting raised great. But here's the thing about Willard. So, uh, he joined The NBC affiliate as a was and he was in radio first, And then he became a weatherman at WRC TV, an NBC affiliate in Washington, and he had no Training as a weatherman. He had did not have a degree in science before he became a weather man. He was get this. The original Ronald McDonald in the early Ronald McDonald ads, and he played Bozo the Clown. So his training to be a weatherman, was he? He was a clown. And he said about being a weatherman, he said, um He said. Listen to terrain gorilla could do it. The only scientific asset you need is the telephone number of the National Weather Service. Now I would love Natalie to get race stage you can can we get him in a few minutes? Because I'd love to know his reaction because I think Ray studied weather for about 20 years or something like that to get a PhD in it. And there was old Willard Scott. No clue about how to do the weather. And yet he was so wildly entertaining. We loved him. He was great. And you know what you forgot like I was reading is a bit in the New York Times this morning that he would dress up so sometimes he one time he came on this Carmen Miranda. Another time is Boy, George. And then he would wear off and on the to pay, and he would point to it when he was doing his A Today's My hair Day. Today is not my hair day, and he didn't care. He just didn't care. And and he was also sort of controversial police among the staff of the Today show because they saw themselves, of course, the serious journalists even morning, Brokaw, Jane Pauley, all those serious type people. Yeah, there was there was one. Um, uh, correspondence between Bryant Gumbel and the management at NBC, where he complained, he said, I don't want this clown. On my show. It's ruining the integrity of the Today show. Yet he was the most popular guy on the Today show by far, far and away. Absolutely. And Brian Gumbel was always kind of a cranky guy. I thought I thought his demeanor was a little bit cranky, whereas Willard was fun. But so will it's got has died at 87 years old. It reminds me Speaking of doing the weather, and I can't believe it's that hard of a job. I really like to grill Cedric on this one. Do you remember that? You guys may not know this? But when someone like Carol Channing would tour The country and hello, Dolly As part of the publicity for the tour, she would do the weather in the morning on the local morning show, right and she would do the weather and she would say thing. I remember her saying This is funny shooting Well, we're going to get a lot of rain today. But you know where the sun is Always shining at the auditorium Theatre. I'm sorry. Did Hello, Dolly. It was brilliant. And the other one. He used to do it. Paul Lynde. When Paul Linwood tour I got to find this clip because it's hilarious. Paul Linwood. He would do the weather in this I can only describe it as a rather campy way. It's oh, and look, there's something swirl it over there. So anyway, But they all they all learned from Willard Scott. I mean, he just had a great time in life. We have a little and he was the Smucker's guy, right? You have a little clip of Willard here and here if you will,.

I'm Karen Chase, and this is Bloomberg. I'm Barry results. You're listening to masters in business on Bloomberg Radio. My extra special guest this week is Professor Robert Sheldon E. He is the author of Influence The Psychology of Persuasion, which has sold more than five million copies. The newest version of this is out, and it is substantially revised and expanded. I have to start with a quote from the new version of the book that that I found quite fascinating quote a central assertion of this book. Is that our choice of what to say or do Immediately before making an appeal significantly affects its persuasive success. But there's a related choice that occurs even before that one. It's whether on ethical grounds. To try to attain success in such a way. That's the beginning of chapter. 13 discuss why you thought it was important to dedicate a big chunk of the book to this Because of the principles we talk about in the book are dynamite. And we've got position of dynamite, so we have to use it ethically. We can use these principles for ill or we can use it for them for good. And the clear recommendation is if we use them in an ethical, responsible way we build relationships. We build long term sustainable exchange histories with people. And that continues into the future. If we use it to to exploit or deceive or coerce people into change, we may get that change in the immediate situation, But we've we've essentially, um Created an adversary. Uh, somebody who resent Being pushed or tricked into ascent. So, uh, in fact, Richard Taylor, you know, Nobel laureate in in one of the endorsements for the book. Here's what he says about the book. There's dynamite here, Please What? Use what you learn with care? That's a very wise thing for him to say. Not surprisingly, Nobel Prize winner. So It's the ethics of the process that are so important to producing long term relationships that continue to pay off for us. That's quite fascinating. You know, I mentioned earlier that you had gone undercover at Car dealerships and and charities and insurance sales place. There's a line that has always stayed with me from the book, which is quote the number one rule for sales people is to show customers you genuinely like them. Why is this so important for a salesperson to demonstrate affection to a customer or a client? Because people like those who like them. And now we're into the second principle of influence leaking that allows us to be more influential if we can arrange for people to feel a sense of reports sense of liking for us. Before we begin the process. We're halfway there already to assent before we even deliver the request or the recommendation or the proposal. Right? And so one way to do that is to turn the rule that I always heard in every one of these training programs on its ear. We were always told if you want to get somebody to say yes to you for your request or proposal. Get them to like you. Alright? And then there are various ways to get them to like you. But one thing I recognized is that the way you the best way to do it. To come to like them. And show them that you like them and down Come the Barriers to change because they know that if You like them, You're going to steer them correctly. That's what we do with the people we like. That's what we do with our friends. And the And the fact is, they will be right if you truly come to like somebody You will try to give that person the best possible arrangement because of that sense of report and affection you have for that person. So that's what we can do, because We can control how much we like other people more than we can control, whether they like us or how much they like us. So let's work on ourselves. Find things that are genuinely praiseworthy about that person. Right. It may take a little longer for certain people and other people, but you can do it. Focus on that and let that person know. Give them a compliment a genuine compliment or find things that are genuinely similar. Between you and that person. Not only do we like people who who like us We like people who are like us members of the same tribe. That's right, quite interesting. Coming up..

In other news, we have San Diego International Airport barely pretty busy at the airport, but not as busy as it used to be on Labor Day weekends prior to the pandemic, officials say. Sunday was the biggest travel day, at least by error. Now, prices remain unusually high. During this Labor day, the average price for a gallon of gas here in San Diego dropped Just 2/10 of a cent 4 35 a gallon The average price is still a dollar 12 higher than a year ago. That's according to figures from Triple A and they could go even higher. This is because of an oil rig spill in the Gulf after Hurricane Ida blasted through the Gulf Now what's interesting about that is we don't get our gas from Louisiana. We manufacture our own gas. We refined our own gas in California because you have to have a special blend. So there is no reason that that should actually affect us. But it does. As all things do. Car prices have shot up in the availability has vanished because of a shortage of computer chips. Now, some experts say it could get worse before it gets better.
