"High frequency single digit Sonic agitator unit. Doesn't do anything. It tells the time If you were talking to somebody who was an award winning stem journalist and host of the Queen's the drone Age podcast, there is only one person that would be and it would be Wray Johnston. Good morning, Ray. Good morning. Somebody. How are you? I'm very well. Thank you. How you going? Yeah, I'm doing quite well, quite well. I am a morning person. So always in a good mood when I get to chat with you. Excellent, Are you An algorithm based person, though. Do you feel that you're in control of your life? Or is it quite the other way around? I'll look, my life exists within 15 minute increments in a Google calendar. Let's be real. So if I didn't surrender to the to the algorithms every now and again, I think I'd lose it. To be honest, Should we be concerned about the encroachment of of these things on their lives? There is little positive and good news. No, it's not all positive and good news. I'm so sorry Algorithms. They can have a really big influence on lots of things in your life, including who you date and who you vote for. And this is something that researchers have been looking at recently. You know, I think one of the important things when we think about algorithms and artificial intelligence to realize is that it's all based on the past. These algorithms have built by people and they using Datta you created by other people based on how well behaved previously so Yeah, we're seeing it in everything from Facebook. Google search results. We say it every day and private companies. They have a lot of research on the daughter if they uses and they have a lot of information about us that isn't publicly available. That means that al noise about how a I works and how it can shape our decisions isn't really very well known. So, Yeah, we've had researchers that have done a few little experiments and have tested the influence of algorithms in different kinds of context. So to do this, they recruited people soon interact with algorithms that showed them photos of Fake political candidates or potential romantic partners and then ask them who they would vote for or sent a message to you, depending on what they were doing and the algorithms they favored some candidates over others intentionally by either outright, saying, You know, this is someone who's 90% compatible with you. Or by sneakily favoring them by just showing their photos more often than others. And overall, this experiment showed that the algorithms had a really begin forwards on our decisions on who to vote for a message for political decisions. The really obvious molecular manipulation, you know, saying that a candidate is 90% compatible. Significantly influenced decisions while the sneaky manipulation just showing their photos more often, it wasn't as effective but the opposite was seen for dating decisions. It was really it was so. So when it came to dating, Yeah, when it when it came to dating, just showing someone's photos more often had a bigger effect on them from just saying, OK, this person's 90% compatible with you. You were a bit less trusting of that. But the researchers say that you know this result, you know, might reflect people's preference for human advice. When it comes to subjective things like dating while people might prefer an algorithms advice on away rational political decisions, well, funny, isn't it? It's funny and terrifying. I want to switch away from evil robot corporations controlling our brains And you know that surely a nice area of energy from the sun. There's nothing lucky about this is there No, not at all. Look, Solar energy is a passion point of mine and there's been a new study come out of our mighty university that has found that our government owned airports in Australia they produce enough electricity to power 136,000 homes. If they had large scale rooftop solar systems installed on decided because of the scale of the like the size of their roofs. Yeah, yeah, there's a There's a couple of different reasons for this so If the found that the installation it would generate 10 times more electricity than the city's 17,000 residential Palin pedals, for example, a swell as offsetting 151.6 killer tons of greenhouse gasses annually, which is really important One of the reasons for this is the airports get really good sun exposure because they're not shaded by tall buildings or trees, so they're really a perfect spot to harness the sun's energy. And you know, we are facing an energy crisis in Australia. But as solar energy resources like your big rooftops in airports, it's being wasted. So harnessing this power source that would avoid 63 killer tons of coal being burned every year. And airports with decent solar systems. They'd be self efficient, like there would be self sufficient. But they would also generate enough electricity to send excess back into the grid. And then we could look at other big buildings as well. Opportunities are endless. I like it. You know, it's put a large roof over the M C. J, for example, and so all of that up, perhaps Absolutely. You can even build routes out of solar panels that so that's a fun one as well. I'm filled everything out of solar panels. Why not Ray Johnson, who wishes to in just in today, the entire world in one life solar panel, which would be you know, I'm good for the environment in some ways and destructive and I'm not inside. I'm way out of my depth, right? Help me out. Let's let's let's turn the clock back to will before solar panels. Let's go all the way back to Australia before colonization. Yeah, Absolutely. So there has been a things been a study come out, and this is a case off modern science, catching up with what we already know from traditional indigenous knowledge and sides, which is one of my favorite intersections of topics, And this study is about superhighways. That we used by a population of up to 6.5 million aboriginal people to navigate the continent tens of thousands of years ago and it's been mapped in this new research. They've created a digital model. It showed what would have been visible at this time..

"Up there's been a lot sixteen please put your resume is legendary head coach lute Olson would need that kind of magic from Stoudamire again for this one the Wildcats were facing a powerhouse Illinois have yet to trail by double digits in any game that season Olson was impressed well the O. line are really good they they are very much of a team on both ends of the court they pass the ball extremely well defensively they they play hard and you know that they're so sound and everything that they do they remind me a lot of R. ninety seventeen that won the national championship they have the three primary guys that can really do it but the inside guys on our team that you're never got the credit they deserve AJ Bramlett invented Davison but they were very much a key to our team because they played great defense they rebounded well and they shot for great percentage and I think that's very true with al noise inside guys to make matters worse for Arizona they were entering hostile territory the game was played just outside of Chicago at Allstate arena one hundred fifty miles away from illinois' campus but it may as well been in Champaign when we come back Kevin Harlan hall of Famer John Thompson will take you back fifteen years to one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history it's Illinois and.

"All right. Maive session. You wanna know it? I wanted. It's another Hulu show. It's not a reality show this time or better this. I'm really getting my money's worth from Hulu these days. Clearly, then tell me what you think it is. Can I was for it to? K whispered to put your ear your ear, my period her mind. Fifteen. Yes, it is. Right. 'cause she tweeted about it or something. Do something about it. I I didn't see that. I just heard them on comedy bang bang last week in thought that seemed like something hand it would like because you are exactly that age group. I was exactly that age group in it's been giving me at first I was like fuck like I'm finally at the age where they're doing the style just shows about my age group. Old and to accurate, but. It's it's good. It's very funny. And it's extremely like is extremely it's so true to life that it really gave me like so many feelings brought memories buried memories back up. Well, powerful burps. The day. They're not memories their bird. Correction? The episode. I tweeted about actually I just really just to remember why it was giving us so much feelings. But it was about aim AOL instant messenger. Yeah. That's right. And how like. Complicated. The social situation on aim got like instantly from the moment that you logged on for the first time. Only got worse in money message. What's up? I just had an amazing. Memory. Can I share mazing eight members came flooding back to me? One time you Hannah were on AOL instant messenger. And I asked you to send me a picture or something and it finally came through. And I typed got it with an exclamation point. But I actually typed Ted we died. I just remember that being the funniest thing that had ever happened to me. Do you remember that? Yes. See that's how. Like, we died a death. But that table all the fucking time. Now, that's how powerful it was that we both remember that like it was like an inside joke for like several years after that with us go go to. I think it made us both queer. Probably it. That's our rude. That's a route. Can. Okay. So like so like started with so I'm not going to recap the whole episode, but it basically just like started with the classic all the AL noises and then all the instant messenger noises, and then they were they were both setting up. There screenings at the same time. And it went through the whole process of like picking a screen name. Like, one of the friends got her first choice, and the other one had to pick something else that you picked something very ridiculous. It was funny that I'm not going to spoil. But they like, then, you know, all their friends. So they said they start adding friends, and you know, they did that thing where they like started chatting with someone that they knew who they were. But that person didn't know who they were. And then like, you know, you go couple messages without telling them who you are..

"Oh, I definitely love that movie. I've never heard anyone compares obvious to, you know, Scarlett O'Hara, and that's that's an interesting perspective. But I, you know, that's one of the things though is, you know, wars hell, and so a lot of the soldiers that come back from the war and survived these battles. I have to think that they feel a lot like. Zombie. But I hopefully, we'll never actually see real zombies. Come from the civil war spirits or anything like that. Would you say rich that most battlefields must be haunted? Yes. Just simply because it does you know when you have that much death at that much emotional trauma happening in a small area. The the land is just made to hold on some of the stuff, and it's more and more seems to be the fact that the environment does play into how much it's able to retain memories of avent's and the bits of behind the human soul, depending on how traumatic it is. Or how awful it was. And we certainly know that the civil war was full full full of misery. Yes, it was not happy about it. That's for sure let's go next to Larry in Alexandria, Louisiana. Hi, larry. Thanks for calling. Go ahead. Hi, I wanna tell you about a supernatural event that happens at the Vicksburg civil war battleground, okay? Laughing at the monument, and the mine has a building this modeled after the pantheon, and there's one step up the growing up to it. But I stepped each day for the siege of Vicksburg and Lincoln said I'm going to take Vicksburg and put it in my pocket. And when I do this will determine the outcome of the war. So he inside there's a big dome and there's a circle on top of the dome, and it is never reigned in there. No matter how hard to storm. The Rangers never gone through that open circle to the sky inside. They're going around the dome has a plaque of every magic name, Al noise, regiment, and on the floor is a mosaic that goes around the circle, and it's got twelve spoke medicine wheel like to the center, which is another circle which exactly matches that circle and the ceiling, and if you go in there, and you make a right and turn and you walk around you passion review. You I've ever met in the L noise regiment, you watch fake to the center, and you stand in the center of that circle you look down, and you see the seal of the state of Illinois is you could take a penny out of your pocket and sell it up. And it'll just keep on going right about through the top. How do you explain that? I don't know. But I asked the ranger. I said how come it's never rained in there. Well, you know, the rain never come stay down or the wind always blows it out. Okay. I said what about flipping the penny? Oh, we really don't want. You to flip. Benny why is it against the law? No. But if you put the penny at Mike over and hit somebody and they're Ingram or if they did keep on gone up to the top. Why it might then the grass outside on marmite yet it so they know what will do. But they don't want you to do it. Interesting take there. That's a heck of a penny toss to be sure rich. Let's take some final calls here. But tell us a little bit about the devil in the delta. The delta was a case that I worked on in Mississippi that involved a family who believed that their trailer was actually infested with a demon the trailing interesting, and it's just a covers all the research of the case and all the weird things and twists and turns that it took. And you know, there was just a lot to do there with a haunting in their beliefs. And then what turned out to be a little bit of trickery on their part? And I kind of wrote it as a cautionary sort of tale for ghost hunters, the, you know, kind of figure out what they're getting into. And they wanna go stocks were they scamming you. Plus so much scamming as just you know, like they would say over just innocent. We're being haunted, and we didn't do anything. And then you go in the bathroom and pull a rug up. And there was like a ouija board on the four. You're not doing anything wiser ouija board drawn on your bathroom. And who did it? You know that kind of thing to hatch Affi, California. We've got it. Now going force Edward I win. All right close. You're close the area back in California, George. I'm glad you made it safe. Thanks. It was close. Watch the weather reports I thought for George. And I have an interesting story of growing up in Pittsburgh. I wasn't that far away from Gettysburg and occasionally I'd hear stories particularly from reenactor. You know, the people get together the the, yes, different battles and rich. I heard a story long time ago. And I I don't know the you were mentioning before the common things that happen at the battlefields was kind of interesting two guys were in in one of these reenactments, and they were near Hiller a tree or something where they were kinda, you know, hiding out and watching and getting ready to shoot. And one of the guys said, you know, I might have bought fake bullets. But you know, they were just pretending. But anyway, all of a sudden this guy shows up there they were wondering where he come from. He he crouched down with them kinda they were kind of behind. And their shoulder. So he starts talking. And he said here is it here. He says I've got some bullets you can use. And and they looked at his uniform, and they go. Wow. You know, he's real spooky reenactor. He's really he's really got a nice uniform compared Iraqi uniforms, and and he gave them some bullets. And then they, you know, they're kinda interested in watching the battle their focus was not what was behind on that in front of them. But anyway, they they they said, thank you. And they didn't hear him say anything, and they turned around, and he wasn't there. Any more? And they re they examined the bullets later on and said, gee, Caesar authentic, civil war bullets. Oh, geez. That's great. So this guy. I mean, think of this from a psychological point of view this guy. This guy was drawn into the battle enough to become visible. Give them some bullets. Okay. I mean like interested in the war. I mean, what did it look like from his perspective being drawn into a reenactment? You know, what do you understand what I'm the real deal in a reenactment? What do you think? They play role that bridge for sure I mean, reenactments, you know, they get the experience thinking, oh, you know. Wow. Was we're back in this. Again. Let's get some active and they see what's happening around them. And they want to participate in there. Re-enactors actors running into spirits and seeing things on the battlefield of mysterious. Almost like other units walking across, you know, many find out there wasn't even a unit stationed over on the battlefield well stories. Do come out of these re-enactors, and they'd probably had more experience than anyone else there. We've got Wayne in Tacoma Washington now west of the Rockies, Wayne good evening, sir, sir. Yes. Like make a short statement. If I may ask question. Sure. And I was hurt question for you to charge. First of all had a lot of programs on lately. Dealing with the living for turn the in this life in the teacher life, so forth. And I know that all religions of Christian religions say in their dogma that. We're all gonna live for eternity. The only real choice. We have is we're we're going to go. We're here to learn to worship and praise God and enjoy him forever. And that's what it's all about. And the realm of ghost at rich. Our our spirits. I I agree with me on that. Right. Sure. Okay. And, you know, the story of salt in the bible where he had the prophet of God Samuel who who had had been his adviser and warned Saul several times against things and died and saw was desperate to get some answers for something. And so he went to the witch of indoor and asked her to bring up the spirit of Saul. And when the spirit assault it come up at scared. The you know, what out of her? And you know, what happened this all it ended up killing him. So just as a matter of safety when you go into these places and call some spirits, it's a it's really Eamon imitating human beings when? Mous any before God. And got asked him where have you been? And he said, well I've been walking to and fro throughout the earth. And you know, he bought one third of the angels with having down with them. We're talking about billing of angels. And most of them are in held. But there are some on earth that are allowed to walk around and learn about people's lives, and they imitate these people's lives after you're dead. And that's what these guys are.
