If you want to record it I will call you and I will record it and play it on this podcast. Because Spring training stories can be fun. I had my first great set of spring training stories. Back in two thousand five when my buddy Jo Kaiser and I were over an inside the park dot com we spent basically the entire month in March month of March down in spring training covering that. Oh five team and boy was it fun and when you have experiences like that you have stories you have store. I've told all those stories thousand times. Maybe not on this podcast so maybe at some point I'll tell some of those stories but people have stories. I want to hear them and I certainly want to hear your jokes. But let's get to your questions. Nate chimes in with the first one of the day and wonders. What if Jared Kalmyk Julio Rodriguez and Logan Gilbert all fail as prospects? It's a good question. It's an interesting question. I'd have to qualify fail somehow. Does that mean they don't pan out in turn out what we hope they'd be? Does that mean they don't turn into anything at all? Like they're not even useful There's varying degrees so I'll answer both if they turn out to be nothing and they don't help they're not anything remotely unique at the big league level. That's a problem because it's going that particular thing with those three particular players will set the mariners back if none of those three pan out to be at least somewhat close to what we think they can be if Logan Gilbert turns into a four instead of a three or a three instead of a too fine ear. Okay it's not a total loss. You're going to get value out of that and you're going to get it for cheap. The first three years the first four years if George Kellner turns out to be a fringe average regular where he's an. He's an average regular for a couple years and it kind of fades a little bit because maybe as trouble with lefthanded pitching. Maybe he can be Randall. Grischuk for a couple of years. That's at least something if Julia Rodriguez doesn't turn into anything special but is at least. You're fine if that happens now. If none of the three or helpful at all. It is a significant problem that sets the mayor's back. I would say one to two years unless they're going to go out and make up for it with money which they absolutely are not. I would say it sets back at least a year in on paper. It might only set them back a year but it could send them back for that if they don't pan out if they fail if that means that they simply just turned into something not ceiling. They don't hit their ceiling. If Celtic is just average if Logan Gilbert just averages filial Rodriguez just average if all three do that like. I said you're going to go to the three do that. You're fine you're fine it. It's not ideal certainly not ideal make things a little harder. Put the squeeze on Jerry a little bit. But you're fine. There'd be no reason to freak out at that point if only one of the three did that and the other two are nothing or worse if all three. The mayors are in trouble Jerry. Dipoto trouble and that doesn't mean they're not gonNA find a way to win. It means it's going to be harder to take longer to do and I would bet pretty hard that it does take longer to do to win as quickly as they WANNA win. Maybe as early to some level as next year. Yeah that's a problem if those three struggle. Now if you're looking at it from a farm system standpoint it's a it's a it's a constant burn your lighting that candle every single day every single year every single night in the morning or lighting it again it signing and developing players is a constant burn. You cannot do it for a couple years and rest on your laurels. You cannot do it and like I mentioned in the last pocket. We're about to see if the Astros can turn around their fortunes in their minor league system or if they're about to run into some significant problems and I would lean toward ladder because they've already lost Garrett Cole. Justin verlander is getting older. And he's got two years left on his deal. George Springer is a free agent at the end of the season Carlos. Correa I believe has two years left on his deal. Michael Brantley I think just has this year left on his. They are not in a great spot with their major league again. They've already lost Garrett Cole some of their relievers are starting to get expensive including Osuna and Presley. That team is Kinda crossroads this year and I'm not saying they can't win. This know what I'm saying. How long are they able to keep it in the elite realm? How long are they able to to go? Ninety five plus wins and to be dangerous in the postseason if they needed to start leaning on their farm system as early as this year in certainly next year. They might be in trouble because they had going for. Maybe three or four years there with Bobby. Heck and and elitist wasn't terrible. He did some things too. But it's faded pretty hard last couple of years of of Mike Lee time and with the new crew. They haven't done a lot of bad draft last year. A bad draft last year and the year before wasn't good either so it you know and that's one of the arguments that's GonNa come up. The mirrors are going to graduate over the next six months. Most likely bring Bishop Jake. Fraley Kyle Lewis. Justin done absolutely justice. Sheffield shed long already has probably also did I say Kyle. Lewis probably also a chance that both jared Kalmyk and Logan Gilbert graduate all Gilbert has to do is pitch fifty innings so it to make him technically not part of the farm system. So if you're stuck on this one of the reasons why I talk about farm system rankings. Not meaning a damn thing. They don't mean anything anything at all at some point in a year less than a year. Somebody's GONNA say. Yeah but look at that farm system. Now it's not very good is it and that'll be because they have nine players between twenty one and twenty six years old that have exhausted their rookie status. That aren't making any money. That's still project to be pretty good. Essentially they will still be prospects but they won't actually count technically so somebody wine about it and somebody will try to make that point but that's also why it never ends in player development and never ends trying to continue to build the farm system. You can't just do it for a couple of years in rest on it and I'm not even sure if the mirror have enough from their farm system right now to have the kind of core that they really want to have the mirrors. Do not want to build their core like this. They don't WanNa go above average two all star player here above average two all star player here above average player here all from the farm system. And then here's a bunch of fringe average to average regulars that we get help from and then we're going to go out and get one. Maybe two impact free agent slash treat. Acquisitions that's how the Mariners WanNa do it. What they don't want to do is go. Okay well we're not going to get this from our farm system so we're GONNA have to go buy it and we're not gonNA be able to get this from our farm system so we're GONNA have to go buy it and we're GONNA have to get this from free agency or trade because our farm system didn't push that out either. That is not what Jerry Dipoto building here. So while they'll spend money they are not going to spend. I mean we've had this argument. They are not going to spend money to the luxury tax for the hell of it and I doubt they do it period anytime soon. We're probably three years away from that. Even being a possibility let alone them actually having the opportunity to do it with. Who's there on the free agent and trade markets to add to the payroll? I mean if you think if you're one of those folks who think Yep two hundred and ten million dollars the mayors are just GonNa push right up against it. Because they're willing to do it. Good luck even trying. Who the hell are you going to give your money to? But the point here is you have to consistently build the development system you have to consistently build the farm system stock it with talent and put people in place to help turn them into big leaguers from superstars all the way down to fringe average useful regulars middle relievers and everything and the more you do that the more effectively you do that and the longer you can do it the longer your window is open. The mirrors don't want a three to five year run and then to start over the mirrors want. Their goal without question is to build something that they can hang onto for about as long as maybe. The giants did if not longer. I'm not saying they have to win. Three world series or even have to win any to be successful and for the rebuild to have worked but if they're not relevant seven out of ten years that's not ideal as not easy to do but that's their goal right now now you'll trade being relevant for some of those years if you get to a world series once yes but their goal is to build something long term sustainable where you don't have to have these seasons like the royals and the Tigers and the orioles are having right now like the mariners are having right now and in doing so raising the floor. The floor was seventy two seventy five wins. The ceiling was the damn wildcard. That's what the mirrors are trying to do. So if those top three guys.

"Might be talking. You can get adjust donaldson at twenty seven million dollars per year. And you've gotten guys like next Kepler for Lanka to sign early extension. Which obviously they both had terrific years last year and Louis Arise just kind of I wouldn't say came out of nowhere but he certainly was not on the prospect radar to help you play basically push Jonathan's. Bill bought a job. And so you look at this team. You're like yeah. There's some really nice players but I'll say the Josh Donaldson and maybe Nelson Cruz a player. You're obviously familiar with. There isn't a star power here and you start wondering what where does that come from. Her doesn't mean never does. Maybe this is a team for guys who are not quite household names and maybe on the fringe of being all stars if their positions that are kind of deep. But that's okay too. Sometimes you want wanted the over quality and that's when you can go Josh Donaldson to kind of Del. The group together. But I think you're ending your assessment on point. I think it's a team still unbelievably somehow scratching the surface of their talent with one hundred and one win. And then you look at different prospect rates and a lot of people have somewhere in that range as far farm systems and a lot of that is very close. You Separate Star. Grad or I'll go in the trade. He already played in the big hero. Louis learning a lot of these Jordan Valley all in that AA MIC. That's that's one step from the relief prospects so it's a really great time to twins fan. I wrote as much. I think six weeks ago that I don't think there's ever been a better time to with Ben. I know they want to world series eighty seven to ninety one but they were pretty isolated seasons. They had last place finish in each of the years before those. This is a time where.

ESPN's Adam Schefter it's just an interesting series of reasons that I'd be there how the Jaguars sort of processing this news the strange juxtaposition of all these facts together and again why did they just say today is go first pregnant while I was there a back injury that was introduced into the equation and it doesn't change the bottom line to the whole equation Scott Jacksonville doesn't want to trade him jail Ramsey wants to be traded and we've got to stare down going on between the two sides in between the flow in between the back aches in between him leaving the team to be with his pregnant girlfriend he showed up on the brakes truck right to camp and mean you there are many negotiations in life and often times a Brinks truck will solve any issues that did exist is it could be as simple as backing that really bring struck up to the door is that it erases issues sure I think that we always your sports it's always about the money right but in this particular case the sense I've gotten from various people is that it's not about the money okay the generators you really want to move on from Jacksonville wants to go elsewhere and of course at that point you'll be paid it will be about the money but I don't think the money and the lack of the contract extension is driving him mad in Jacksonville I think that's due to other factors like Tom Coughlin his feelings towards the organization and he just wanted to get a fresh start elsewhere. so that was the topic of conversation for most of the week and then again on Wednesday is the excuses continued to change him Jaguars coach Doug Marrone was asked about it the prognosis on Kaelin's fields back to that first my name plate waving a prognosis Lou was he can he can solve doctors good job clearing a C. was sick yeah good now no matter from the sickness yeah yeah and then we did the and when did the injury pop up. I would be surprised if he's not out there we with his teammates this weekend. but this is one where I do also don't believe that a less Tom Coughlin gets two first rounders released a first and a third for John Ramsey the dealer and is not going anywhere with her dog morale what he had to say during the afternoon when he met with reporters and then Wednesday evening released a statement that said in part quote months ago in the off season Jaylen notified me he was expecting the birth of his second child in late September we spoke about this recently it again today after practice and decided it was best for jailed flooded Nashville after meetings to be with his family during the birth of their daughter he will return to the team when he's ready and we will provide an update at that time..

"Every Sunday. Seventy seven ABC. As mentioned moments ago, the Yang smack in action today to mingle among who's just been nothing short of amazing nine in one this season pitching to listen three ERA host the Yanks yunky no thirty four and seventeen. They built their lead to three over Tampa Bay and seven plus over the Red Sox can't beat Houston. So this has been quite a season for the young, but I will say this the Yankee fans caution them just a little bit. The Yankees against four lands place teams. The Baltimore Orioles land on the AL the extra ten into the Kansas City Royals in last in the AL central the young, so five and one the San Francisco Giants last place on the L west youngster three and, and the Seattle Mariners horn last in the AL west. The Yankees are three in one so against those four last place teams the twenty one in four. Now, look, you've you gotta beat his on your schedule. That's great. The twenty one in four thirteen thirteen against everybody else, which includes Houston they can't beat some of the better teams in baseball. So it's good. The early season schedule gave the Yanks opportunity to feast on some of the worst teams and they're doing that again, twenty one in four against lousy clubs. But when you say they don't eat are in judge don't need on call ho- Stanton that. Oh, need DD thirteen thirteen against everybody else. And that's where you make the big money. So it's been fun. I don't think going to do with guys like Strada and Ursula when these guys get healthy. Gotta find a way to play them, right? We'll see. Anyway. Dana cavalier is that right? That's right. Spent twelve years the strength and conditioning coach for the Yanks and performance enhancement, which always sounds a little dirty, but it's not he, he kept these guys in shape role longtime. He's got a brand new book out habits of a champion. Nobody beat comes a champion by accident. So I guess you with the young from a one to thirteen. Yes. I actually started in oh to, to fourteen. Okay. Yeah I read a story about you today. I think it was Newsday when the Yanks decided not to bring you back. And the guy said of got who wrote it wasn't Neil best, and he's like, look, you can't blame Dana from October sheriff's wrist. You can't blame Dana for Derrick jeeter camp and ankle. You know, you can't blame the third example. But another major superstorm for the Yanks. Oh, it was Kotas Granderson form. So you can't blame Dana for all of this, but the Yanks have decided not to bring them back. So after a lengthy stay and world championships. What do you think the Steinbrenner Cashman who never come into elected, not to bring you back, you know, alternately it's, it's just what the businesses said. You know, you know, when I got into this line of work in this business. I looked at, you know, other sports. I looked at baseball. I looked at a guy like Joe Torry, and ultimately, once you signed that contract, it's like turning over the hour glass and it's just a matter of time. It's just the business. It's nothing personal. And, you know for me. I started as a nineteen year old kid and I got a great chance with the New York Yankee. So I'm one hundred percent grateful for that. Sure. But the Yankees the, whether you got they let you go, the Yankees, not make the playoffs. It was only the second time in nineteen years. They had not made the playoffs at the time. Dating back to. Honey me, as I guess, I'm trying to figure out how you already part of the reason for that. You know, I really I don't know what you're saying the right things. No, no. Honestly, you know, I just don't Brian Cashman the other night in town. We were walking, and the relationship is still strong. It's like I said, it's just it's just the business. And when you understand that, you know, you don't sweat it. And I'm not just saying to say it. I really believe that and it's the truth not believe listen. You, you in great shape, you your biggest not as good as you though. God, much better shape than me. I'm older. I'm fifty two. I'm thirty six got you by long's. Yes. So sixteen years, it'll be a good shape. But you look great. And you keep yourself in great shape and you know how to keep players in great shape, but I gotta ask you this. What is going on? It's not just the Yankees. All of course major league baseball. There are more and more injuries. Now, what I hear guys say is too much working out too much, lifting weights too much this too much that this is your business. Why all these guys particularly the Yankees getting hurt? Every year. Yeah. So the focus for a long time, that, you know, has always been about building strength and power. But the reality is when you bring players into a big league team in or onto a big league team, they already possess those characteristics. You know, we're bringing a muscle do we need more of that? Or do we need to keep them loose pliable and flexible, little bit more of like the Tom Brady approach to, you know, to sport and years ago? Each row Suzuki told me when he said when I trained like an American and lifting weights and getting bigger. It was the only time that my performance actually decreased that what he said. That's what he said. So that's why when you would watch each euro prepare for a game. Everything was about getting loose flexible and staying lengthened because he's to say the fatter and bigger, your muscles, the big your tendons, get you lose the range of motion in your joints. Explain to me, Barry, Bonds, Mark Maguire, Mike Piazza Clements. These guys have put up good numbers. They put up numbers never be approached again. Explaining to me. Well, you also just mentioned four guys. That were obviously, you know, heavy participants in the drug era. Right. So as much as they were building size strength they were also taking things to recover as well players today. You know they're training and they're getting the size. But are they recovering as much as the players back in the day, we don't know, we always, maybe this is unfair, but there's always this? Maybe it's a misconception. Maybe it's not that the players, always one step ahead. So whether it's H T H something they can take those eight recovery. By the way and size. There's something out there that baseball doesn't test for yet. If you look at the hormone numbers this year, I know the baseball is different. But again, they are bashing bowls out of the ballpark, guys that don't usually hit home runs written four hundred foot home runs and the fans to they must be doing something baseball doesn't know about yet. Yeah. Well, it's two parts of that, again, you know players today you know, they're starting to train at a much younger age. These players are coming in. It's a much different player today when you look at the player profile today versus even. Ten years ago there in the jeeter era. You're talking about some big strong, powerful boys on the on the drug front. Absolutely. I worked with an Olympian years ago and used to say the drugs are always a head of the testing. Yes. And that, that could be. But also, we have to make sure that these drugs are also calibrated for the sport. And we may not know exactly the negative effects of the drugs right now. So we may be in testing phase guys taking. I don't know speculation but we we don't know right habits of a champion. Nobody becomes a champion by accident. Dana cavalier spent twelve years with the Yankees on championship teams. So you'll deal when Iran shows up, and when he gets in two thousand four that's after his days in Texas. And again, according to urban legend that's what he was using more than ever even more than he did with the Yanks when he first walked in what kind of physical specimen was. You know, when he walked in remember it was I was in spring training in Tampa. And I see this big beautiful tan men highlights in his hair. I said, oh my God. Look at this guy donnas, and he was in an amazing guy to be around and watch. But, you know, I know he got caught up in some of the drug stuff, but his preparation and his commitment to training was unbelievable. And at the same time, what a great team players love them. The young players gravitated. Well, that was one guy. At the same time, you know when we were in a playoff on. Everybody was dining together, we were all together as a unit, and I believe that's why that's why we won. But ultimately thing with Alice, he did spend a lot of time talking to game with young players trying to make them feel comfortable and. You know you gotta tip you listen. He's really good on Sunday nights, and he has been because she really doesn't know the game. Yeah. I mean, I would think he'll be a baseball lifer now who get some fun office job. Or maybe Joe position who knows? He don't know the game. Now when I'm went about your book is even though you a physical trainer this book, spent a lot of time talking about mental training, right? Don't be you have to fail before you can win. Nobody knows how other failed time and time and time again. So as a lot of close in this book that you may have heard before, but you're able to apply them to the Yankees, and two championship team, which makes it much more practical, right? When you're working with players on a day-to-day basis, there turning themselves over to you with their greatest asset, which is their body. You don't wanna waste that our you get with them three or four days a week when you could work their mind and for me to understand who they are. And what made them tick, and I was to get more out of them as a as a coach. You know, and at the same time, you know, people think these pro athletes. Are, you know, these superhumans now physically and from a talent standpoint they are? But mentally they still deal with the same things in stressors that you and I deal with everybody else deals with right? And we gotta work. Not much. The next car payment rookie still are those the other guys, you know, that presents other problems in, you know in itself. But ultimately, it was about taking the pressure off these guys. So they could go out there and play freely every single day much like they did when they were kids, not just a struggle conditioning. Coach you also serve, basically as a therapist for these guys. Well, we, we had a mental conditioning. Coach didn't unbelievable job as well. But again, I looked at it at the time that I had a chance to spend with these guys, why waste it and they would share their their issues with you and their problems. They were dealing with a Yankees, Utah. Again, you on the team that won four championships in all these guys, the guys that you met worked out that you really came to really appreciate like and not to name names. But anybody that you worked with you, like you know what guys have been of dick? Yeah. I get that question everywhere, I go was the biggest dick you ever worked with me. And you know. From from my end. I gotta say like the players when he get to that level. Yeah. They, they were pretty cool because they've been humbled so many times. But I, I love poll, and he's quite on. Yes network. I love them. The already looks like he could have been a bit of a dick and his playing the only guy that I came across. And I could say was really dick, he is. But he's a he's a fun dick, but, but but you know Tony Womack was a player years ago that was that was difficult that I had found that was the only player but.

"Sure. How did you take the comments of Paul Dolan in Cleveland earlier this week? Man. I didn't take them. Well, you know, I think look Cleveland for years talk about a team that doesn't have a lot of resources comparatively. They've clearly kind of shown all smaller market teams that you could still succeed. But at some point, you know, ownership has to step up and say, look like we've built this thing in might not be the most profitable enterprise personally. But you know, I own this team my attest to make money, but to win really to provide my city with a source of pride and entertainment. It seems as if that ladder consideration is not at the top of Mr. Dolan's west bend rider, joining us on the show. Well, I think it's a fierce, especially because you know, I'm based out of the city, and I brought it up a couple of times, obviously. But. I like the dolans because I know that there's a commitment to keeping the team in Cleveland, and that's always been the're historically here. But then when you're told that a lot of people get upset where do you find a happy medium because the front office has done a pretty good job over the last decade or so they've done a great job. Clearly, I mean, the competes every single year if they don't win the AL central yet again, it's a suck. And maybe on some level you have to give them credit for explaining the financial realities in a transparent way. Just like Jim crane one stayed saying essentially, well, enjoy Francisco Lindahl for the next three years dot that. Right. What's going to happen? Three years from now, he's saying most likely won't be an Indian anymore so perhaps as far as setting expectations. That's helpful. It's helpful there in the AL central which is an easier division to win than almost any other. And even with a low budget team. If you make the playoffs, of course, you always have a chance. Of winning that tournament that just baseball works right now. We have been writer joining us on the show Sports Illustrated, senior writer, author Astro ball. Find him on Twitter at Ben writer. Do you think we should have made a big deal of Bryce Harper? Getting booed and Philly. I kind of thought it was fun. If you're gonna demand excellence demand excellence. No. I think look this is what he signed up for right if. Yeah. Very well paid and he didn't want an opt-out. Right. He said I want to be in the same place next thirteen years. Of course, I never added up to me because a player up down still gives the player the power to stay in the city if he wants to I certainly wouldn't draw too many conclusions out of one or two games. But yeah, I mean, it's it's gonna be thirteen years. Come hell or high water? There's a team that not only is there a team out there that not a lot of people are talking about that. You're really excited to breakthrough in two thousand nineteen. I think there is you know, we're in a very polarized baseball world right now. So it's almost hard to come up with sleepers because of division champions seem so obvious. You can really them off the playoff teams almost seem. So I mean a team I'm really liking the looks of it. I think they had a really smart off season was the Minnesota Twins. They've kind of an up and down over the past few years. Everybody's just counting them to win the L central including me 'cause the Indians are still there. You look at the combination of young rising talent they had on the roster. Like, Eddie, you're sorry. Amac's Kepler Byron bucks. And I think is ready today. The next step Jose barrios from the rotation. And then you look at these really smart kind of lower level off season additions. They made Nelson Cruz CJ krone guys like that. I think that this is a team that has a shot at least to win a wild card which would be surprising to many people. The book is astro- ball by Ben rider. You can find it just about everywhere. You can you give me some of the nuance. That's in the book is well, I don't want you to get everything away. Because obviously, I want people to buy the book for you. But what can you tell me more about the book there been well, it's really about how the Astros were pioneers going beyond moneyball to look at not just inefficiencies in performance data, but folding in the human factor holding in concepts like growth mindset, who the players are what drives them what their scouts could identify. The numbers weren't showing were weren't weren't a revealing folding that in with the most advanced analytics department in the world or in the baseball world anyway to get the best out of both man and machine and doing it in a very rigorous way. It's really a story of how any organization that's down on it look down on its luck might make use of a lot of these techniques to find success and certainly the Astros have found success, and they're not going. Anywhere anytime soon. Do you think that this is maybe why some of the salaries have been driven down? Just like what we were talking about where people were arguing about collusion. People were saying some really nasty stuff towards the owners. But you give me this great example here, and it's worth the Astros are an incredible team. You pick them to win the World Series. I think a lot of people agree with you. And it's based off this type of work that they've done or maybe more teams going, well, wait a minute. I don't have to pay you this much over this amount of time to be a competitive ballclub for that amount of time. I think the Astros certainly shoulder a lot of the blame for what's happened in the free agent market blamed from the player perspective, anyway, they're incredibly focused on properly valuing players on valuation, valuing them not based on what they've done in the past. But on what they project them to do in the future, and they're incredibly disciplined about it. You know agents have told me when you go into the negotiating room with the Astros. There really isn't. Negotiation. They're very nice. They're very clear they essentially like right number down on a piece of paper and say, this is what we believe your guys worth. This is where we're gonna pay him take it or leave it. I think a lot of teams are following in that foot in their footsteps. I think it's more of an ideological shift than collusion or anything. Like that. Of course that begs the question, why is the baseball salary structure the way it is why aren't players free agents until they're past their primes when their values are nowhere near what they were when they were under cheap team control. That's gonna be the battle in the CBS negotiations that are coming up. But as far as why it's happening certainly the Astros have led the way in establishing this new way of balloting clerks the book Astro ball. Great look at how the Astros became the team that they are really a new wave of thinking in major league baseball.
