Golden State's got a three nothing series lead in by the way the thought was phil mentioned this. They didn't think they routed a series down three nothing. They still felt that they were the better. But Rick, Barry's putting together. You know an incredible series and he's dominating the bullets. He's outplaying the stars. Elvin Hayes Wes unseld and in before game four Mike Reardon. Who was the the bullets small forward he was a Knick to you? Remember him with the Knicks he played. He played with both Willison wet exactly my career. His nickname was bags Mike Rewritten was essentially the guy given the responsibility to take Rick Berry out of the game as in knocking him out physically, and that's the. The way basketball was played back then, and the plan was that reardon was going to try to agitate and get into a fight You know an intentional fight with Rick. Berry and game both tossed from game. Four will really gets in the fight and attacks, Berry, and Al Attles was the coach of state will before the Game West apparently was given the responsibility of Al Annals pre-written said I'm going after. Rick Perry I'M GONNA TAKE HIM OUT WEST AL's coming off the bench. You've got him. Engineer told the story about how Al Al Aduls was the head coach of Golden State and was a tough tough guy as you said and when reardon gets into the fight with Berry, and you can see this. This is a youtube game. You can see west. As Al. aduls come sprinting off the bench step in front or rear. And is Chenier, said it took every ounce of the strongest man in the Game Wes unseld strength to keep. Allah handles away from the skirmish. Als. L. Adults got tossed from that game. He got kicked out of the game. which golden state eventually won to clinch the NBA Championship in Washington but Al Adams was not on the floor to see it. He was back in the locker room. Berry by the way did not get booted from the game. He stayed in the game and ended up with you. Know another good game in Golden State won the game and swept the the bullets, but. Listening to Chenier, tell talk about unsettled been given that assignment and West is like man als, actually a tough dude like he's really like who were the tough guys of that era like I know Clifford Ray and Mo- Lucas who played with Walton. Maurice Lucas in in Portland was bought Bob Lanier a tough guy, right? Yeah, these were all all tough guys you know but Westwood West. What's probably? The most feared a of that.

The nineteenth twenty nineteen the National Park Service will be honoring an acknowledgment. Triumph of Marian. Anderson. Just from back that back then at that time. Marian Anderson Garnett. Twenty honorary doctorate degrees. And is still referred to as one of the greatest voices. And one hundred years. Of that time, and I would imagine for those of you who are historians and music. That voice of Marian Anderson, which we had the opportunity here. Is one of those voices that resonates throughout? Just a footnote from me to you. There's a recreation center and south Philadelphia on fitzwater street Marian Anderson center. Department of recreation. I think about it. Because as I travel the area to play basketball. What a treat. It was to be able to go and play there. And at that time being young. I didn't understand the full significance. Of Marian Anderson. But as you grow and you look back. And you think the opportunities and privileges that you've had? A lot of as off the back of those were Trail Blazers. Marian Anderson very very special, and we wanna drop that in on Sunday morning. And now he's he's blistering he was five for seven yesterday the day before it was on base five times. That's what we're going to get with him. We're going to get him when he's red hot. And we're going to get him some time when he's not hot, but you know, to key, Jerry. And you are a sports person is that he has a -bility that go to the plate and Ghana walks and still help his team from that point of view. Face and it got behind now too. That helps well the Phillies have a tremendous lineup. And it's going to be interesting when the weather gets hot and the ball really flies how that lineup is going to function. Going to be a lot of fun and Philadelphia this year and the eagles eagles are go to begin beginning to eagles have the draft coming up, and we're going to see how they're going to be able to function without Nick foles that is something that's going to be a part of the legacy and the history of the eagles, and is going to be important that when we look around how that team progresses how to quarterback position progresses because they're going to be times when they're not playing well, and I'm going to receive phone calls and say man, if we have if we had Nick now, if we had Saint Nick, you know, what he's been able to do for us. He won the Super Bowl was constant wince is the future. And I spoke about that way down the line that if you're going to invest what to eagles are getting ready to do long term contract. You want to invest in constant wins because his future for the now. Ten to twelve years here. What the Philadelphia Eagles will be one that gives us one of the outstanding quarterbacks if he can stay healthy. It's exciting. Isn't it sunny how you feeling? All right. Doing. And that's why he did that movie with Judy. I did not know that. But when you talk about frit Astaire, you talking about one of the more gifted all around entertainers that we've ever had not only those remember Fred Astaire from the movies, but Fred Astaire is in a conversation as the greatest tap dancer of all time. Although from my perspective, bojangles Robinson may have been better descend get exposure. He did get it when he was with the movies back in the day. Hey, listen, I was looking at that game last yesterday afternoon. And I I I know what he's trying to get our big now every minded me of playoff game. I believe it was a playoff game. When Rick Barry was mauled by somebody. I think it was out AL's wanted to come off the bench. So he did. Let's put him into bear hug. Well, I was fortunate enough that I was doing that game for CBS. So I was on a front of what was transpiring, and they thought that they could bully and intimidate Rick Barry did everything but over the head with a club. Well, you know, the thing about that is that Al annals who was the coach of the team and out at is considered his nickname is he's called the destroyer. And the reason they call him to destroy his because he's one of the most potent individuals to ever play in the NBA in terms of physicality and knock you out, and when Al annals came out on the floor as Wes Unseld said what I was concerned with was that Allen's was going to come out here. And as west six six weighing about two forty five fifty and one of the real physical players of that era. You remember? That that's that's going way back then this. And by the way, when you said, you know, getting your new outfit Easter we saw, you know, my parents taking me down get my new BUSTER Browns. Stop at BUSTER Brown shoes. Oh my goodness. Yes. You had to have you had to have Busta Brown shoes pack, then that's how good to promotion was and the logo it's sunny, I bumped into a former co worker of mine, and and he's been listening to you. And I didn't notice he told me this the other day. So Tom if you're listening. He's been listening to you for thirty two years. So my goodness. What's his name? Tom from Fulton Bank. Don from Fulton Bank. Tom from Fulton Bank, Tom if you're listening have a good Easter, my friend Dennis thank you for bringing that to the radio show. And if you get telephone number since he's been listening all those years get to number to me when you call in the next time just tell my producer that you have a number for me, leave your number, and then I'll call you, and I will touch base with him because it's people like him who make it possible for me to do the things that I do and you are at that progress, by the way that come on. Now, you know, you know, that gets me real right there. You know that dressing. I love music. I love sport. I thought it was a baseball player extraordinaire became a very good basketball guy do everything else. But when you talk about the dress game that's my best game. And I'm gonna be with the grandkids today for Easter egg. I like that we did that back in. Day. We will be balling Easter eggs putting a collar on him and then hide them. And then we try to go and find them we did that coloring other day where took care Dennis. It's always a privilege and a pleasure. Bye. Bye. The ninety four WIP sports radio. "Awesome? You know, fun to see the last night at the game and celebration of the forty seven years at the warriors have been there. I actually started before them over there with the Oakland oaks. But yeah, no great. And it's gonna be fun to see what happens when they move over San Francisco coming back to the roots where I started. It'd be a lot better than the civic auditorium in the cow palace. Yeah. I would think so it Rick this, you know, there is some concern with and this is this happens with any team in any sport anytime a team moved relocates, and it's obviously not that far just a few miles. But it's different. It's San Francisco as opposed to Oakland, and there are some longtime warrior fans that are a little apprehensive saying, hey, you guys can move in in the building is going to be state of the art, and it will be Joe lak- gets all the credit there. But do you do you have any apprehensions about perhaps he atmosphere won't be the same because there are murmurs of that like, well, it's going to be all become big money in that vibe that intensity that oracle is known for. If maybe it won't be the same. Well, it all depends upon fans because as I said to the fans last night when I had an opportunity to say something different credit in honor to is that you know, oracle is what it is. Because of the fans because the building I mean, what if you're where the building is. It's the fans that are into building what they bring to the table. And right now, I think they're up to like seventy percent or so of the season ticket holders have renewed their season tickets, and there was a big long list of people waiting to get on that list. So it's all gonna be how many of those thirty percents that are still available are going to come in. Our those people going to be as far as their allegiance to the teams their excitement about this team and remains to be seen. But it could very well. Be that some of the people that are coming in. You may be people who are going to be as much or maybe even more. So the ethic about this. We don't know, that's unknown. But I don't -ticipant at that. The worst case scenarios that may not be as. Good. But it's going to be darn close because she's still got seventy percent of the pants. Yeah. Two thousand twelve destroyed him on L S honoring Chris Mullin. And Joe like was getting booed, and we all remember you grab a microphone. My god. Down the fans, and you say give up some time and things will turn around. Well after three championships regular, right? Yeah. Well, you know, the thing that got criticized for that. Rick berry being Rick Barry. Well, you know what? I'm just one of those people that if I believe in something I speak of about it. I've always been that way. And that was when I came in as a professional in nineteen sixty five which seems like the ago athletes are supposed to be dumb jocks and not have a teleconference and not be able to say anything. So I always been controversial in that regard. But it was just a disservice to Chris Mullin. And that's why it up to do. It was his night. And it was not the time to do it. And I joke with Joe late last night. I had to leisure sitting with with the and and his lovely wife. And I said, hey, Joe, maybe maybe thirty percent of the people who are not renewing their season tickets or something maybe those are the ones that do we? Yeah. Rick, very with whom I guess line. Rick. The team has never held the name. The Oakland warriors. You mentioned the Oakland oaks there for a minute said they're going to keep the Golden State name when they moved to the chase center. Do you? So she ate the team with the city of Oakland. Are you more of a San Francisco based guy? No, I I, you know, I think it's a bay area. They don't could have been the bay area warriors. I mean, he'll Golden State. I mean that takes out the entire state. So I mean, you know, you still have the the the southern portion of state that's down there with the Lakers, and the clippers, you know, if there was going to be ever be a change, and they can be the bay area warriors. But for me, it was originally the San Francisco warriors that was the team when I came here. And you know, I still kinda relate to that. I say to me it's like coming home party for them to come back to where their roots were. But it's always encompassed everyone. I mean, people still came even more of the San Francisco warriors, they were still coming from different areas around the bay area, and it's gonna be exciting. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Billy Katya magin. How incredible it's going to be with all the technology that they have and what they're probably going to put in there. It's going to be. Fantastic. I mean, I was talking to last night with Joe, and I guess there's going to be something like twenty nine different restaurants. They'd be near that. During the day. They're going to be open. I mean, it's just going to bring a lot. I think to the city of San Francisco to offer to people were coming here to visit. Because it's such a cosmopolitan city. You know, I guess the only thing people be upset about all the taxes that they charge. Yeah. No doubt about. Hey, Rick Perry with us on the Murph and MAC show. Rick. You know, you mentioned the name when we first brought you on the air, but I'd like to pick your brain a little bit about Al annals and great weekend without getting into the Basketball Hall of fame the doors are opening their deservedly and just maybe some memories experiences or thoughts. You might wanna share on other great Al adults hall of Famer. Well, first of all, just, you know, this Harding said for me to you know, to see him suffering with the health issues. He's going through third time. Now that I've been back here in the last several months where they were trying to honor him in some manner, and fashion and now has not been physically capable of being able to ten so that's really sad. Praying that hopefully is going to be good enough to be able to go back and actually participate in the honor of being dubbed into the hall of famous contributor. I mean, anybody in today's world that's been anywhere for fifty years between things is pretty remarkable the way people move around. So as a player, then as a coach. And of course, it is, you know, working in the office for all of these years. It's been fantastic and Alexa, people know Alba's. My my roommate when I first became a pro back in those days, they had roommates it have individual rooms, which negotiated into contracts, many, many years later, and so I tell the story and I'll do quickly because you guys don't have that much time is that was my roommate, and he got to do whatever he wanted obviously know warm room. I hated war room. Tila shows I hated to watch. And then I walked in one time it had the most foul smell ever smell in my life was worse than right next. What in the world? And he said, I'm shaving well turns out that black people back then in order change said I would get bumps if they used the razor. So they use this stuff to put on their face to take the hair off. And it was the worst smelling stuff ever. So I credit allies. Al, you know, you're the one that helped me to become the player that I became because I knew that the only way that I could get a single room would be to play my butt off and play. So well that I can go she ate a single room in my contract. And that's what I did. That's great, man. Hey, and if you could rig maybe as we wrap here, you know, and it was a Bruce Jenkins who wrote about this in the chronicle yesterday. Nice piece about Al adults, and there are some nice photographs. And just kind of the legendary moment when you were getting kinda roughed up a little bit or attempting to refu up on the court. And this is during the funding, no less and also you look over here comes AL's off the bench. Now, he's in the scrap on the middle of the court. It's hard to imagine in today's NBA something like that happening. But if you could maybe just walk us through that from your eyes, and all sudden you look behind you in here comes adults. Well, as nice to know that you had out there because name was the destroyer, and I saw how pick some Abadia part when we were teammates playing, and he was a big, you know, big center, and Al probably could have been a great price fighter gets quick hands. And with such a tough guy. But a gentle guy I mean, but don't get mad one of those types things let sleeping dogs lie. So Mike Reid wanted to get thrown out of the game. And it started at the gym ball. When he threw an elbow at me. And I knew what he was trying to do. So I wasn't about to get baited into that. It wasn't that stupid. And then he came over my back in front of our bench later in the game in off the bench and media running out there to make sure that I didn't get involved and try to make sure you kept me in the game. Well that happened and he got tossed, and you know, he was there pushing and doing stuff with with west. Solan? I was running. I was staying away from everything. But you always knew that out had your back when it came to that. And most players make all players knew his reputation and kind of feared him. But that's that's the Larry was he was always there for his team. And and was just a great person into they say, I'm just say for him to be going through what he's going through. Now, Nelson the health issue. So everybody say a prayer for for our please. Well, said Rick very well said, and we will definitely do that. Indeed. And before we let you go Riquet always great having you on the show, what do you plug in? These days you involved in anything, we need to mention before we let you thing that got me off a prescription drug that I take all the time and that you'll set go G Y, B dot com geo G Y, V dot com. He's a lot of similarities in Texas Tech in their coach Chris beard feel fortunate to be here. And yet we think we've earned our way to be here. And Texas Tech is a you know, we kind of clone each other in some ways. And yet I think Chris has done a great job with his team. We're both disciples. You know what Bob Knight jet Heathcote? And those guys were best friends, Chris, and I are getting to know each other. Now, speaking of Bobby Knight. According to the Indianapolis star Bobby Knight today went to an Indian. A baseball game. I think he runs around sixteen seventeen when when we when we win screening playing playing their, oh when we were in high school, we were sixteen seventeen eighteen. SSSH fifteen seven longtime. We're talking about the middle. Fifties. Is that you with your with your boyfriend back then? Your boyfriend, you are holding hands, and you, and you he would take you to the door. And he would might get a kiss on the cheek. Yes. Prim and proper back. Oh, definitely definitely begin before sixteen. You had to be in nice o'clock. And with a certain rules that have had guests at the house particularly on the weekend a Friday or Saturday. You know, when it got late around eleven o'clock, or whatever it may be you hear some scuffling upstairs in watching on top. You gotta get ready to go. Now. Back then things were different this. They were and I actually got paid by a quarter. Some guy happened to be a little space one little space high avenue. I was sitting in my step. We used to back then and he said to me, but you watch my car for quarter. I'm sitting on my own. I don't get to use to at at shy park used to have people who make sure you had a space, and you give them a quarter, and they would watch your car. So they wanted to gallon was over when you came out your car was still there. And all this stuff was messed it much. Just say, okay. They did it the kids back then. They were really good good show. But nobody nobody took anybody. Ali. Thank you for calling back. Then. Okay. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for sharing your your interaction with wilt through your boyfriend back then. And what was his name? Richard docherty. They call them bridge Richie Dougherty that he Goto he went to Roman and I went to Saint Columbus. Back. Big time back then. This had to go to. I had to go to a commercial. So I could go out and get a job. All right. Thanks. Bye. Bye. Bye. Let's go to Reicher and San Diego. Good morning. Good morning. If you remember me calling you a couple of weeks ago to talk about my friends that you name big country. Oh, definitely. Yes. Well, he he works as a surgical nurse. He's works until two in the morning and out here in San Diego. Beautiful San Diego. He wants to be able to call you sometime, but he's asleep right now. He's has a hard time staying up after work all night. He wants to bring back memories from back in the day. Right. He just wanted to say low. But I wanted to talk to you. I tell you what you do what you can do when we finished having our conversation. My producer Phil Jackson's gonna put you on hold. He's going to get your telephone number. And then we're going to make that connection with big country. I was not born in Philadelphia. I was born in New Orleans that was an army kids. So I grew up in Oakland. My father was stationed at the Oakland army base in Oakland, California. So I grew up in that area. And I remember watching the warriors will I came out. And I remember as a little kid guy. Rodgers at Alvin adult. Yes. When you said that all my guys, Alvin Atals, I gotta tell you a story. I lived the last time I lived in Oakland before I came down here to San Diego was in two thousand and twelve and I lived in a little town called San Leandro, which is right next to Oakland Alvin has out head L adults. Philadelphia cheese steaks. So member now I had lived in Philly from eighty six to eighty eight. So I fell in love with all the cheese steaks. Now, you say analysts had cheese steaks. What do you mean he had he was able to order them and get them? He had a shop and he used to import the Amoroso rolls. That's what you have to have. You have to have the bread. Yeah. But I remember going in there and just sitting in there talking to him he is one of the kindest gentleman. He has never met in my life. And let me just finish. It all by saying this Reicher, Al is the longest running person in the history of the NBA with one franchise. He was with the Philadelphia warriors who then became the San Francisco warriors the owner at out. There's name was Franklin mealy who was in line business. Yes, he adopted Al adults and Rick Barry as his two sons when Rick Barry left, the Golden State Warriors are the San Francisco warriors to go to the Oakland team to play in the ABA. Al Attas became his first, son. Al Adams has been able to get a paycheck. As a player, a coach and executive a radio broadcaster and a consultant or adviser, and he's still on the payroll at this late date and his life with the San Francisco, Golden State Warriors, Al Attas, you're absolutely right. And he has a son mail. Yes. I am very close to his family. His son now runs what's called, Al annals cheese steaks. No, I haven't been to the Oakland oracle arena since I moved down here. But he has one here's a concession at the warrior games called AL's cheese. I'm not surprised because that's how much Franken mularkey who owned the team thought of our as his son, and and made sure that he had a position and organization and then with the new owners that it now owned the team they've continued that relationship with Alex. But Reicher I wanna get some other callers involved. I thank you calling from San Diego one of the moment of beautiful areas of the United States. I'll tell you what I saw hang on hang on grab they're grabbing for me, Phil. And we'll do something with him a little later on in terms of the conversation. We're going to go to MAC. And along. We're gonna go to MAC and broom all bit morning. Good morning. Just such a pleasure to talk to you the way you you give him the styles and everything remember, I think the last time I spoke to you talked about fishing, and you gave me your number and I called the couple of times. But I never got back from you. I joined a familiar with Glen mills area Glen mills air. Yes. I'm familiar Glen mills as schooling Glenn Millstream there. It's on Cheney read it's called the newborn newborn smell. It's been around for years. Fishing ponds for kids. Lavish stream cabinets really cheap. I joined it. I joined a couple of years ago. They sent me a chiller going to have a stream cleanup the twenty third and get things ready. And then they're going on the opening day trout season. Which is the twenty nine this month. They're going to have a breakfast for the anglers in the in the log cabin. And then and then and then you better get to your subject because we only have about four minutes. Go ahead. Okay. Good. Maybe I got that day. But my son, maybe you, and I could get together together maybe another day after that. And then and then the other thing is the ramp decided not to go back and talk. I was kinda young the sixty six sixty seventeen with Wilt Chamberlain. Do just how Billy Cunningham Luke Jackson. I don't think there's ever been a basketball team like that in history against regarded as one of the great teams of all time. We'll play it on two of them. The Los Angeles Laker team at one thirty three in a row and won the championship. And then certainly a lot of the pundits who've been around consider that team with the players that you just spoke about how Greer Billy Cunningham Chuck Walker. Dave gambe, Billy milky Yoni. Mattie googlers. Those guys as as maybe the most dominant team of all time. Yeah. I I would agree. A lot of people when I used to be a member of the Springfield health blacks, where I know the sixty at one time practice a guy told me he can coach she doesn't think any any team nowadays could touch that team. Thank you. But I'm gonna try to get another caller. Thank you. All right. Bye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Let's go to Andrew on sell. Good morning. Andrew. Born in Richardson, the first time caller you. I grew up in California. Okay. So I I'm fifty eight years old so back in the early seventies. I love the Lakers. And I love the I love the Sixers now, of course. But I love Wilt Chamberlain. And I wonder I've had a philosophy. I only think that the new generation is going to understand what how great will Chamberlain is. If they do some kind of movie on it has anybody ever approached you in helping to produce a movie like this. I've heard of individuals that want to do it. They would have to go through his legal people in order to be able to do it from that point of view. But even if you do it you have to understand this Wilt Chamberlain is a Paul Bunyan of all time. No matter what you say. And what you do people cannot identify with it because is greater than life and is greater than the sport. He played. He's the only athlete that has dominated his sport to the point that they asked him physically. Would you please tone it down simply because you are destroying the game. That's an actual fact. Well, also, he was a great athlete. He was a great volleyball player. He my father used to tell me that he thought he could beat the love Mohammed Ali in boxing had to. Well, that was a big situation on the southern show where he and Ali Cassius Clay at that point put our little skirmish wilt could've probably made some money out of it. But the Dipper didn't need money because he understood how to take what he had. He had great advisers. Great people the Richmond family was very much a big part of his life and an early stage took him under wing taught him about how to invest how to take care of his money. And that's why we're so independent. See we'll didn't retire from the NBA. He just stepped aside because he told the seventy Sixers who he had a handshake agreement with the late Ike Richmond that he had a small percentage of the team and the team didn't wanna live up to it. So he forced them to move him in another direct. So we actually. A retired. And then short from the lost Angeles, Lakers and Evine and said, I want you to come and play and where Wilkes house was built that land was given to him as a part of the deal and wilt from the day. He started playing the NBA and tell he left the NBA was always the highest paid player and the game. Well, I just hope in your lifetime in my lifetime that he will get his just do because I'm tired of hearing that about Jordan. And lebron. I it just doesn't make that they changed the roles because of Wilbur, that's correct. And as I said to you Andrew, and I want you to understand this. I've been with a long time. No matter what you say. And how you say it nobody can fathom that an individual could do what he did. Maybe the most astonishing thing he's he average forty six minutes a game lifetime. He's plays the day. They've played thirty five thirty six minutes. They played a lot of minutes. Anybody play forty. That's unbelievable. And he did that every game without a charter with out of five star hotel and never complained and just love to play the game of basketball. I gotta go buddy. I'm up against the clock. You thank you. Bye. Bye. Coming up next Glenn and Ray live from ShopRite. And as we go out, Dr.

"Between Boston and Philadelphia. Bill. Russell. Bob cousy. Sam Jones, Casey Jones. Tommy heinsohn. Have the check. So many of those great players. And on the other side, we had Paul Arrison and Tom Gola. Guy. Rodgers Al annals Woody Salisbury. Andy johnson. It wasn't a game. It was warfare. It was colossal. It was built and rightfully so as the rivalry and history of the game, not only that. You had the most competitive two players, historically. Playing against one another. "Away for the break. You wanna tell us about Calvin Murphy. In Houston along with. When I was down there, Elvin Hayes and John Lucas, and I went to Dallas for Cuban for Carlisle. But but Calvin Murphy as you said before probably maybe one of the two or three toughest guys certainly best. Street. Fighter is ever to play in the NBA. And and I would testify to that. Yes. We he's funny as all could be he says, I had seventeen fights when I was in professional basketball, and your view is he was maybe five eight five nine he says, I want all seventeen. And then we go to other people. Stop right there. Ask curtis. Rowe. Well, no it was sitting. Sidney wicks. He knocks. Knocking out quick Sidney wicks six eight where at about two thirty five. But the Celtics any any didn't another guy named John Brown. The guy code Atlanta Hawks nine so so he's funny. But the thing about Calvin which might be really interesting to your listeners. Also, I have four different scenes throughout the film, the twenty hours called signature moves, and they here we have great players describe in detail with about their hands. There is their hips their but their feet their fingers their minds about their signature moves. So that includes Alan Iverson, wonderful tale and his crossover. It's LeBron ongoing rim to rim Durant on playing off the double team, Calvin Murphy and Rick Barry together on free throw shooting, and they were on the same team as you know, Houston, right? Steve Nash on probing Unseld on the outlet pass Earl Monroe on this spin master, the master. That's been move Oscar and Embry on the pick and roll and Bill Bradley on moving without the ball. It's burn our king on the turnaround, baseline, stop it. I'm salivating. You're so good keeping going it's. So that's that's the stuff there. And then you have stuff. That's you know, not that. I wanna makes you cry breaks you down. You know? Here's what Bill Russell told me. And I. What what more can you have interviewed Russell. And I know how important you were to his life for five and a half hours. Stop. Let me stop you right there for my radio listening audience Bill Russell's personality is that you don't cross the line with him. If he gives you five minutes of conversation you've had a lot. So you're selling me you had five hours with Bill. Russell five Russell and six would Oscar Robert well, Oscar Oscar also is similar but not as bad as as now. Both of those guys are my guys. So I have general conversation with them anytime, and wherever it may be so on the set up for you. Go ahead Russell for five hours in his home. He was my third interview. Right after Dr Jack and and went to Seattle for for for for Russell. And for Lenny Wilkins. He's what Ron and Russell. You broke my heart and not in a bad way. But it we're talking about so many issues of race and you manage or lack of humanity. And you know, there's a lot of people wanna say, you know. Well, certainly don't remember this old Saint Louis hawks that had big issues with race, you know, and some people they some of that on Bob padded. So I don't know if that's true or not we interview petted, my my I, but Russell said this to me because these are the days that they were double headers in the NBA double headers and Russell was there with his dad the Celtics played and before one game introduces data, Bob Pettit. I guess Saint Louis was playing the next game. And then after Russell's game Russell went over to his dad. I think his name was a Felton. Well. Established teary-eyed Russell says what's the matter? What's your matter? And his dad said this ceases that man. He goes what man Bob Pettit? He called me. Mr. Russell and Bill. Russell look as far as is. That's the first white man ever to call me, Mr. Russia. How about that? I liked that. I liked the Bill tell you this one twenty one years of playing basketball. He went eighteen championships. Yes. Yes. And by the way. How did how did not know that? And you said you had a chance to talk to him, and you were able to get that out of him while he won the Olympic Thailand, fifty two titles university of San Francisco he played on eleven NBA. Coach too. So there's your. And but but he goes into there's not the typical wheels versus Russell who's better. I don't care about that. You know, people can't even imagine. How good these guys were. It's just impossible these Hayes, right? But Russell talks in great detail because he laughed I said, well who was the toughest you play against you cracked up. He says, well, we'll of course. But he talks about how we have to defend wilt laterally couldn't defend we'll straight up. But he says this there were four minutes in every game that he knew that he could run run run run run. And somehow, but those four minutes, and he doesn't even say these words get the better of wilt, but but he would perform, you know, level. But I have a question you, go ahead. Go ahead. I was gonna say to you, the Celtics how to a theory and the theory was because we'll was playing both ends north that Russell played only one end of the floor, basically. Right. Okay. And what they would do Tommy. Hi sound. We told you this Tommy heinsohn's instruction was to when they were going from offense from from. Defense to off from when when when the Celtics were going from defense to offense. Tommy Heinsohn job was to run in front of wilt that Russell could get down the floor and tell tell what got fed up with it one time. He grabbed Tommy Heinsohn by the neck lift off the floor to tell you that story. No, go ahead. Great. Okay. Man. That's a great story. Someone told me I forgot who will just picked up and just a it was Tommy Heinsohn. There's someone else. Also, he just picked him up. And that was the end of the issue that was it, you know, but but but Wilton, but understand this Bill. Russell psychologically use that to his advantage against wilt because wilt adored Russell because when I was in high school and college he went out to meet Bill Russell and have conversation. And therefore when they team came to Philadelphia Boston. And when Boston went to sexist, we're not six hundred warriors went to Boston. Russell used to stay at Will's house. You bet you bet. And and what what I ever different take on the will vs. Russell film in in basketball, loft story. Everyone says David versus Goliath. That that will is a lie. I have a different take prompt him. I think that Russell internally was different than wilt will. Well. Enjoyed parts of life. Right. There was Russell would do anything at anytime to win. My view is that it was Russell who is the Goliath and wilt was danger. That's my view. But, you know, go back to Calvin Murphy. I mean, I have seen on Washington. Seattle and and Golden State in those years a couple of seen seventy six to seventy nine and Washington is getting swept Washington with Wes Unseld Elvin Hayes. Bobby dangerous they're getting swept in in in in in in in in the play offs. And oh this about Al annals. I'm sorry. So so they decide that we gotta take Rick Barry out seventy six Rick. Yes, killing them and. So there's a huddle, you know, ally. Casey Jones is the coach in the game game four and the Washington players say this is enough we Mike Reardon, we gotta take them out. So my career. Volunteers to be the guy that's gonna punch out rip back. Yes. And then west says, wait a second. I forgot something. If you get Rick Barry albums is the coach. That's right. Name is destroy SM the destroyer. So so I got it. Now, one six eight to forty I gotta grab ally. Annals as soon as you hit Rick bass, right? He had the deter him, and we have all the footage and that includes on sale grabbing als. In a bear hug and adults still getting away. You betcha. We've got to wrap it up. Dan, Clorox you have a viewing of this Thursday and New York, and the commission is going to be there to be a part of it. You back the Commissioner and the governor nine hall of famers, sunny hill. We'll be there. There's a book I'm not I'm not sure about my schedule right now to get back to you on that. There's a book Alcoa basketball love story. Just came out the great Jackie MacMullan. Eddie. All my interviews. It's a wonderful book for oral history any basketball person in the world twelve years old of seventy five eighty ninety s gonna love it. Thank you sunny. Hey, buddy. Be entrusted with you. We'll be talking about it. And thank you for giving. My very you're listening on some insight. Great I love Philadelphia right back at you. Okay. Okay. Dan, flores. Thank you. And Dan is the person that's putting all this together and closing. Jay wright. Call me last week. He wasn't able to join us on this show. And he apologized. Sorry. I don't worry about it say, whatever he's going to be honored tomorrow, and in Maryland, and he's gonna receive that Nell and John wooden award in terms of coach and wife, and I'm expected to be there to be supportive of it from that point of view coming up next countdown to kickoff, Glenn MAC now Ross Tucker, and Dave Spurr Darrow will be a part of that. And we're going to close off by saying Carson Wentz. He's back. Let's go eagles talk to everybody next week by something big just dropped at McDonald's.
