The Hidden Religious Themes Behind Superman

"Story is an interesting one. I don't know that one as well as Batman. But there is only one way to be able to basically stop Superman kryptonite and the story of Superman. What is the biblical, not The Batman versus Superman, but the biblical story? Well, Superman Superman is probably the biggest parallel to Jesus in virtually all the superheroes. It's interesting because Superman was actually nietzschean when it was written. It was actually written as a nihilist by the two guys from Cleveland. I can't remember their names. But so tell me, well, it turns out that Superman is sent here by a God of another world to save this world. He is the son of this God, jor el, I think his name is. And he stays incognito until the age of 33. As Clark Kent, right? But he's staying incognito so he can complete his mission of trying to save this world from evil, and then by the time he hits 33, then people start to realize, oh, this Clark Kent is really Superman. This Jesus is really God. So it's a parallel to the Christians of the messianic story. Yeah, the messianic story. And you find this in all of these superhero movies.

"I'm talking to David Adams Cleveland at the author of a brand new book novel gods of deception and David, you were just making a point and we had to cut you off. Please forgive me and go back to that point. Just to give you some idea about the depths of evil that were perpetrated by the Soviet spies in the American government, besides Alger Hiss, Alger Hiss, by the way, on the way back from yalta, stopped in Moscow for one day with elements of the American delegation. And in a secret ceremony he was taken aside by the head of Soviet intelligence and given the order of the red star for his contributions to Soviet intelligence. That's just for beginners. But here's something even more astonishing that Americans need to know about the level, the depth of evil. That was going on at this time. There was a Soviet spy at the upper echelons of the Treasury Department by the name of Harry Dexter white. Well, in 1941, the summer of 1941, Harry Dexter white was approached by his Soviet handler. Victor pavlov was his name, same name as the guy that had the salivating dog. Victor pavlov. And he wanted to meet with Harry Dexter white at old app, it's grill in Washington, D.C., right off the Treasury Department. And Pablo says I'm going to meet you there. I'm going to have a copy of The New Yorker with me. You'll recognize me. They'd never met before. They sit down. They have lunch. And pavlov pushes a piece of paper across the table to Harry Dexter white and he says, I want you to read this and put it to memory. And white picks up the paper and reads it and nods and says, yes, I understand. What that was on that piece of paper was what the Soviets called operation snow. It was a plan to, for the U.S. to ratchet up the pressure on Japan. In summer of 1941, that is embargoes on oil and raw materials, where the idea of pressuring the Japanese so that instead of invading north in the Siberia where they'd been fighting with the Soviets for a number of years, that Japan would be forced to go south.

"Before he can be the type of quarterback that people envisioned. You know what would make it easier on Trey Lance as if deebo Samuel was there. Where do we stand with that? Did he show up today? Oh, yes, lord. Please. Well, no, he's not there for the start of OTAs. Now, the good part is it certainly seems like things have cooled down and teams made calls to the forty-niners during the draft. Nothing materialized in terms of the trade that debo Samuel wanted and so as long as there was no trade partner then it's hard to imagine the forty-niners trading them now so then debo would have to make a decision about whether or not he'd be willing to show to mandatory mini camp to training camp where all of a sudden now you're risking mandatory fines, loss of a crude seasons towards free agency, the stakes become greater, the more he stays away. All right, we get a lot more to get to here today on NFL live and coming up. The AFC west looks like it could be the best division in the NFL, but only one team can come out on top and judge Marcus. Is here to listen to the arguments for each. We're going to the courtroom next on NFL live. Do not miss this. We're back on NFL live in all rise. The honorable Marcus spears is now presiding over all NFL issues. Here on NFL live and boy, do we have some big time cases for you. As we get you ready to go, we've also got our bail up here in case things get really bonkers. That's Chris over there. Wait, did you say your name is Chris? Okay, I thought I forgot it for a second. Anyway, should know his name. The first case, guys, involves the question. Which NFL quarterback is under the most pressure this season? Mina Kim's? Take the floor. Who is it? Sure. Yes. Well, your honor, first I'd like to say you're looking particularly distinguished today, just wanted to put that information out there. The pick has to be to a tongue by Lola. I don't see how there's any other answer. The Miami Dolphins have basically devoted their entire off season to putting him into a position to succeed, a training for one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, signing one best left tackles in the NFL, adding a slew of running backs, then of course, an offensive minded head coach. They're doing all of that. While also making it clear that if he doesn't succeed, if he doesn't win this season, they will move on. Not just because they were of course linked to deshaun Watson for some time now, but they've retained those two first rounders and I'll tell you this. If two it doesn't flourish this year, he might not get another chance in Miami. I can appreciate your argument, but one of us went to a distinguished law school and one of us didn't. Your honor, I think you always look amazing. You look spelled and clean. My answer is going to be Dakota rain, Prescott. Objection. Oh, sorry. Number one. Nope, I have my opportunity. Number one, $40 million salary. That is 6th in the NFL tied with a guy who just won his Super Bowl last year. And Matthew Stafford falls just behind. No, not a wide receiver for the dolphins, follows just behind Aaron Rodgers, deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Derek Carr. Dak Prescott in the regular season to really good player. Because 67% completion percentage, a passer rating of 98, 8 yards per attempt, three to one touchdown interception ratio. In the postseason that 67 goes to 60%, that passer rating goes from 98 to 87. That 8.7 yards per ten goes down to 7 and there's only a two to one touchdown to interception ratio. No quarterback under pressure this year, more than deck Prescott. Okay, your honor, swagger, make your ruling. Yes, first and foremost, compliments have no place in this courtroom. I don't give a damn. Okay, the second thing is the lady from California, menace. You win this case. Brain Dakota Prescott. In my courtroom will never be talked about in the manner that the gentleman from Connecticut talked about him by the name of Dan orlowski. So are you the Greek related from California? He's fighting for his job. He has a job making $40 million a year. He's speaking. There you go. One of these quarterbacks. You might not. Evidence doesn't matter. You can't rule on bias, not evidence. Orlowski, quiet in the car. Quiet in the courtroom, we need order. We're moving on. The next case involves teams in the AFC west. Where's your gavel? You don't even need one. After each team in the division made significant moves this off season, it's no surprise that ESPN's football power index projects an extremely close race. The Chargers are the slight favorite followed by Russell Wilson and the Broncos right behind both teams is the chiefs who have won the division in each of the last 6 seasons. So we're going to give this orlowski guy who's been a bit unruly so far. The first chance here. State your case to the honorable Marcus spears that the best team in the AFC west. I have respect for this court, sir. The best team in the AFC west is similar to the judge's beard. It's perfection. Oh, that's the Denver Broncos. The Denver Broncos have a defense that has two elite pass rushers, defensive linemen are the most important position in all of football. Both edge rushers can get after the quarterback. They have 5 guys in the secondary, no secondary is good unless the defensive lineman who are the most important position in football play well. They got 5 guys that can cover that are really good in their roles. And then they got an offense that is now added Russell Wilson, diverse in scheme, an offensive line that is going to be better because of him and head coach that comes over from being one of the best offensive minds in football and Nathaniel Hackett. They've got a diverse skill position group. The Denver Broncos can play whatever every style of game that you need them to play and they've added a Hall of Fame worthy quarterback, but he's still not as important as a defensive lineman. Natalya Hackett is one of the best offensive minds in football. Matt Lafleur called the plays, Dan. I mean, the Broncos are exciting. Don't get me wrong, I'm very enthusiastic about the prospects, but they've got two first time coordinators and a first time head coach. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, there is continuity, the brain trust is in place. Last year, we were endlessly worrying about patching mahomes and yes, he had his ups and downs, but that offense still finished first in expected points added per play. I expect him to bounce back in a big way this year because of the mental side of his development based off of last year. Yes, losing tyreek hill hertz, but I actually love the wide receiver group they put together with juju Smith Schuster and VS and then of course sky more who they picked up in the draft. I think it's going to allow them to play those two high shells better than they did last season, frankly, then on defense. This is a defense that was up and down last season. They now have a true edge rushing threat, opposite Frank Clark, and George Carlos, I like what they did with their secondary and most importantly, I'll go back to this. They have continuity. These Magnolia was still there. Andy Reid is still there. Patrick Mahomes is still there. And that's why they will still be atop the division. All right, so here we go. We're going to get our ruling here from the honorable judge swag goo. You can either choose mister Orlovsky and the Broncos or miss kinds and the chiefs. What do you go with? Best team AFC will. Slam my gavel. First of all, that is why and let the court speak. That is why you two are mere lawyers, and I've been deemed NFL live federal court judges because it's the Los Angeles chargers. Have you ever been paying attention to what they've been doing this half season? Okay, Khalil Mack comes over and Stan wants to try to give me love talking about the defensive line. What about that baby true line? That sounds Sebastian Joseph day as well with Bosa on the other side Derwin James, a Sunday Samuel junior and not to mention they signed JC.

"Early in the in the preseason was this chiefs defensive line as really talented. Didn't look like today and the first half. I mean you could have driven a mack truck through some of those holes was it. was it. Just early season jitters like. What do you make that early performance. I make that they suck. I mean and also this has got to be their linebackers early in this game. I mean my god. Fill a run gap. Anybody i get it. That's probably the best offensive line and football and in. Cleveland is the best running backs in football. So i get it. It's a huge test. That early seventeen yards at run by the touchdown. That was embarrassing. I very rarely say this. Actually mean i could've run for that. I mean there was nobody touched. There was nobody within ten yards of him. The can't happen. There were two plays with the pilots getting pushed in the end. They won the game because the went on late. They made place and with this team. Let's face it with kansas city. That defense is judge. Zoff points not yards. I don't care how many yards give up if they hold teams to field goals. That forearms are gonna win the game and they did it. They did it. They forced return to turnovers plus on special teams. And then the big three and out. I wanna get to a few questions kind of tie into this show. I saw shoot a free fast. You know the more issues and just matthew clark. I totally agree. I totally now. I think some of the passing the fence issues are solved by those two guys. Because clark's second best pass rusher on the team and matthew's great player. I think some of those plays were like they were breaking down and coverage like the deep all that thornhill gave up like that doesn't happen with matthew in my opinion right or four less chance. That happens but i actually thought they really miss the athleticism speed willie. Gay has how many times are they beaten to the edge in this game at the second level. I'll.

And obviously the cheese played them in the playoffs and thing that we've said about them a lot is in cleveland's gotta play a certain way right. Cleveland cleveland wants to run. the football. cleveland wants to run play action. Cleveland wants to be a head and what they don't want to be in situations where baker mayfield has to drop back and them into the game or throw them into a lead and a big part of the skepticism. He was incredible but towards the end of the game when all of a sudden when the browns born in front when the browns dictate the pace of the game and do what they wanted to do and they had to drop back because they didn't have time and they had to throw. He just wasn't able to get it done. It was a small sample size. But i don't think there's. I don't think we know what baker mayfield. It's going to be this year after this game didn't touch him for most of the game. Let's be real. I mean now. Chris you walk out. Hey to socks. Ultimately he had a very productive game. But you see the little tag on cheese defense dumpster. Fire yup pretty much. It was for the first portion of gain. That look i get it. They're missing starters. We'll get into all that that doesn't excuse what they did. In the first half of that game they were a business. I don't care who's playing. I mean you've got to be better than that. But jones made a couple of big plays. I thought ultimately i thought the coverage is actually decent portu- game a couple of good throws here and there but in the end i walk away from this game saying i think cleveland's absolutely legit play the chiefs like that and not be a good team. I i know you can always have you know team. Come in and play a weird game they hang. But that wasn't a weird game like cleveland. Cleveland deserve to be in that game. And i'll tell you right now if you're the browns you're walking out of there going. We won that game. I mean we turn the ball over all these stand and if you're walking out of their saint who cares we won we know where the pri- the better team and we didn't play well. We're missing are all pro safety and are pro bowl the end and we still want. But i think bakers good. It doesn't change my opinion of him. i think he's a good quarterback. I think. I think he's kind of like derek carr. When things are going well he can be really good when they're not it can be but i thought you saw at the end of the game. The difference mahomes made unbelievable plays and baker when when they had to throw and they couldn't just run the ball for eight yards of clip..

"As well now. She'd expected to hear from them within a few days but no one called. It wasn't until late october that she finally connected with them and not until october twenty seventh. They officially took her report. But that's like five weeks though and what you describe essentially attempted murder. What are the police doing during all this time. Well they said that they had tried to reach the tundra and the days just after the assault but they had a hard time tracking her. Doubt they physically. They just couldn't find her. Couldn't get ahold of her because we'll tundra like many many others in east cleveland at the time used drugs crack cocaine specifically so she didn't live the kind of life where you go to work at the same time every day you go home you like the same routine like all of that and at this point two thousand nine Addiction is really driving her everyday life and every decision that she makes according to robert sabinas book house of horrors during those five ish weeks police said they called and even visited her mother's house looking for her and tried to follow up but even the mother said basically like good luck. She's a hard woman to pin down. Bay said they made one appointments me but the tender was a no show but it was eventually on the twenty seven th that they finally connected and now two days later on the twenty ninth. Police are going to arrest anthony for sexual assault. And it's a big team that's going in. The plan is for swat officers to go into the house. I to arrest the suspect clear the premises whatever and then the sex crimes detectives will go in after and look for evidence. Anything that will prove lieutenant had been in. That house and help corroborate her account of what happened but specifically they're looking for a pink sweater that she said she left behind and that extension cord that she said she had been strangled with just before seven pm that night. The group arrives in several vehicles at the house on imperial avenue. It's a three story standalone home. That's split basically into two apartment so there's one on the main level and another one above that that includes both the second and third floors and it's the second third floor apartment. That's where anthony stays now. He spends most of his time on the top four but the attack on the tundra happened on the second floor so police assume that if they're gonna find him it'll probably be there. Does someone else live at that first. Floor apartment then no not. At this point. It was actually anthony's stepmother who owned the house and she lived in that apartment below for.

"Episodes right now high crime junkies. I'm your host ashley. Flowers and i am bread and the story i have you. Today is one that our highest level fan club members actually voted to hear us tell. It's about a serial killer a man who stalked the streets of cleveland. For years luring unsuspecting women. One by one into what can only be called a house of horrors but it's also about everyone who saw a community in crisis and chose to look away. This is the story of anthony. So well the cleveland strangler It's late afternoon on october. Twenty ninth two thousand nine and police in cleveland. Ohio are pulling together a team of officers to execute an arrest warrant. The warrant is related to a sexual assault report. Police took two days earlier on the twenty seven from a woman named tundra billups. Who told police that she been at this guy's place partying when out of nowhere. He just snapped. He beat her sexually assaulted her even tried to strangle her with an extension court. Oh my god. In her report hundred told police she'd been unconscious for hours after she was strangled. And that both she and her attacker were almost like surprised. When she woke up there was no doubt in her mind that he was trying to kill her. He meant to kill her. So did she know her attacker. She did. Actually his name is anthony so well though she and everyone else who knew him just called him. Tone and tone is no stranger to the mount pleasant neighborhood where he lives and where letendre spends a lot of time. We'll have even been to his place before he dated one of her friends for a long time. I guess and she always known him as perry friendly very generous guy always out on his front steps talking to the people who passed always willing to help neighbors who needed a hand but letendre had heard some rumors lately that suggested to her. That tone had a dark side that he'd been violent with other women to and it was hard for people to believe that it was even possible just because of who he was again..

"Barrett's wants this book is published and again. It's kind of hard for me to believe. As i mentioned i was twenty when we got the barons. It's hard for me to believe that this all transpired forty years ago More than forty years ago wants. The book is published and i make the rounds of the author nights at bookstores and libraries and such. I really expect a lot of people. Do come up to me. And say i never knew. Cleveland had a national hockey league team. I never knew that. I would be willing to bend it a very large portion of the population even those who themselves sports fans don't know that cleveland had a national hockey league team for two years and i wanted to keep that fact alive. I think that That deserves to be known has to wear the the barons would fall in terms of Sort of the pecking. Order of of cleveland sports. Obviously they would be at the very bottom of the list. I would have to place them. I wouldn't have to play with. it's not tied with. Maybe maybe even though. I have to say above only because that. We're talking about the national hockey league crab talking. Ahl predecessor or the team. That came back as the barents. That i think. Howard the guns actually Brought back right in the minor leagues after this debacle yet. They dated. they've they bought the The lexington kentucky team of the american hockey league and moved to cleveland and renamed it the barons and The the gentleman cavaliers. Now dan gilbert own the cleveland team of the american hockey league. Which did win. The american hockey league championship won the calder cup. In and funny. Sixteen and the one thing. Dan gilbert made it verbally clear when he I don't see started the jam from scratch. Or if he purchased him and moved to hear. You made one thing perfectly clear. Esteem will not be called. The cleveland barons other barons. So i would place there. And just above the cleveland. Stoker's of the middle-ranking sixties who were a british soccer team. I'm gonna stop you right there because that that is another book you need to do. The one year wonder actually two years. Yes they were stoke city from a masquerading as the cleveland. Stoker's of the old united soccer association as you probably know by perhaps listening to this show absolutely right up our alley and talk about something that is also lost. A history is absolutely that story and I was. I was ten years old nine years old and didn't years old we had to stoker's and soccer did not mean anything to me and i have to confess. I'm still not not a soccer fan. Just does nothing for me. But i know. They played in front of Few stray pigeons and nobody else at cleveland stadium for two years in the investors lost their.

"Empty space. Nothing was ever built around the coliseum. Nothing nothing valenti ever envisioned came to pass none of it. Yeah millennial powerbroker in many respects. He was a founder of the cleveland. Cavaliers owned the soon to be renamed cleveland indians and and own this ahl barons franchise right so you think that he if anybody could influential and making stuff happen it would have been him. Well i mean. The idea did not seem farfetched. It really did. Not stephen farfetched and mileti did make one thing happen. Which was the coliseum itself because the coliseum was built with one hundred percent private funds not one penny and tax money was spent on the richfield coliseum so that was a miracle in and of itself on mileti got that building built without having to go into the tax payers to ask gray and white. It was completely financed privately. Are i don't want to harp too much more on the cleveland crusaders. Because frankly that's probably your next book. And i look forward to having a conversation with our lord knows that logo is great and and the story is but i want to close with one last part on this this part of the story right so and it involves. Frankly how cleveland wound up getting. The golden seals mileti own the team. Then he sold it in seventy five and then this guy jay white sold it back to him in seventy six and then literally almost like a month or two later. I think if i have the time right the nhl somehow decides to move to cleveland. And i did mileti. I guess the question is what mileti know and when did he know it And frankly it sounds to me like it was the nhl finally coming to cleveland. And then he recognizing his now newly owned rezoned crusaders had to get outta town because he didn't think he could compete there with the nhl. Is that right. How it's it's a very long and convoluted story and i do Talk about it in some detail in the book because it all ties in together the bottom line wise until world hockey association sent To legal counsel of the national hockey league on a letter stating categorically. The cleveland crusaders. No longer exists. Cleveland is no longer in the world hockey association not until that documentation was received by the nhl. Did they say okay now. The golden seals are free to move here. We needed absolute proof from the w. h. a. That this was no longer their territory. So the crusaders were gone. It was not a question of mileti realizing the crusaders couldn't compete with the barren barons would not or i should say the golden seals would not come here until they had documentation from the w. h. a. The cleveland cavaliers have been sold and moved out of the city. They no longer exist the crusaders. Yeah so but all right..

"Was rejected. So that left Nick mileti with no place else to turn for majorie hockey but do the what and the wj said short. We've got eleven teams already. But it would be good for us to have a market the size of cleveland so come on in interesting and so but that's obviously a scene center right for for how the barons ultimately sort of wound up there. I the the crusaders. And i know this is. We're kind of want to focus on the barons. But the crusaders they were they were. They played their first two seasons at the cleveland. Arena right which. I guess is in downtown. Cleveland yes they did. And then there was this richfield coliseum thing right which i think is important sort of Thing to sort of bring up in this conversation because maybe you describe it for our audience we've kinda hinted at the previous cleveland conversations but It's integral to the story whereas obviously with the barents wound up playing but it was an arena. That was built i. I don't know if it was specifically built with the crusaders in mind but it's clear that it was. It was envisioned as being a future home for not only hockey basketball but on the outskirts of cleveland. Right wasn't he even close to downtown. You know it The sports writers you out here used to call it the big house on the prairie and without it without it The golden seals would never have moved to cleveland and You it was partially responsible for the demise of the crusaders and the barons simply because it was It's not exactly equal. Distance between cleveland and akron actually was closer to akron then to cleveland but the big problem and i went to the galaxy of many many times. I started a lot of time. There not so much hockey but the basketball. So i remember what it was like trying to get to the television and what it was like trying to get into the parking lot and even more so what. It was like trying to get out of the parking lot. The problem was the coliseum. Was there was only one access road to the coliseum..

"When we sort of last. We're chatting we were in the realms of football and cleveland and there i get the sense that that cleveland is very much near and dear to your heart as a subject to explore when it comes to sports teams. Yeah well lived my entire life year. And i've been in indian stan around san cavaliers fan so Yes i really am interested in in delving into the the sporting pass. Now where the book that. We're going to Discuss i used to be much more avid hockey fan than i am now. And mainly the reason was and in nineteen ninety. Two of cleveland lost. Its hockey epa which international hockey league team and went for like ten years without any hockey. And and really from the mid seventies on i. My interest in the sport had cooled. And i really can't tell you exactly what it was that made me decide to sit down at the microfilm and start looking into the two year history of the barons but i mean this is something that happened in in my lifetime. I was twenty years old when the barons came here. And so i remember them. Well and i i just thought it might be interesting to look back on one of the unfortunately Great sports disasters not only of of this community but frankly In all of major league sports the glee lebarons. We're just a a two year laughingstock. Yeah well and that. Actually that uniquely. Capitalizes its importance. When we come to look at topics that we wanna pursue. Because you know. I started this show. What four plus years ago. I must say on a whim but certainly on a on a premise or a supposition that a lot of our explorations would be sort of in this category of tragedy or serio comic or best intentions gone awry and that kind of stuff but you know certainly not all of them have come out that way but this i think certainly qualifies. I want maybe sort of get into the sort of The the two tributaries of this barren strikes. I think they're actually are two of the number number one of course as we've talked about in various or previous episodes with our pals steve courier and mark rich mill about the california golden seals. That that's probably the the most obvious but there was also this world hockey association. Dalliance with cleveland in the f. Four years immediately prior to the arrival of the barons. Do you wanna use those two topics kind of as the table center for this. Cleveland barons store. we're getting into yet absolutely. That is what i Wrote the first chapter about what happened to the crusaders and how it was absolutely imperative that the crusaders fake eight cleveland. These or the golden seals would move in. So i i do Spend quite a bit of time. Even after the golden seals had moved here. I just felt because i had talked about the crusaders in such detail. I did spend a little bit of time. Talking about how the crusaders who ultimately became the second in nation on the minnesota fighting saints of the world hockey association and how they Eventually went belly up midway through the nineteen seventy six seventy seven season and I certainly do mention the the golden fields as well..

"Our previous conversation with gary from Jeez way back to plus years ago episode one eleven. Well we talked about the all. America football conference the quote unquote league. That didn't exist. Great book great conversation. We urge you to to check it out. But gary is back this week as we get ready for his Impending release we think it sometime in october. But this book will be available is actually available for pre order about the the story of we're going to get into and it's the cleveland barons of the national hockey league. Yes cleveland had a national hockey league team. The cleveland barons two years. It was in the nineteen seventies and the book that gary is getting ready to release now available preorder as call the nhl mistake by the lake. A history of the cleveland barons and man. Oh man what a treasure trove. This story is the clip. You just heard it gives you some indication of the just the sheer craziness and futility and the odd set of circumstances both before during and certainly after the existence of the cleveland barons nineteen seventy six to one thousand nine hundred seventy eight to whole barely seasons of professional. Nhl hockey and it is a story. that's got so many different layers and elements to it. But let's set it up that clip that you just heard there was from a pittsburgh. Penguins broadcast right. So cleveland barons footage very very difficult to come by but this was a clip from october. Twenty third nineteen seventy seven on w. h. t. v. fifty three in pittsburgh and the malapropisms. "Emily kuang here with npr science correspondent. Dan charles hi emily. I have a question for you. Have you taken a look at joe. Biden's promises on climate change. Well i know. They're big promises. But i don't know the fine details. So what is the latest in. There is something about them that caught my attention. Okay the white house. Keep saying we are going to address. Climate change in a way that also addresses the country's economic and racial disparities. Yeah i definitely heard of this ring of climate justice to it you know like equitable climate action right. But i said to myself. What does that actually mean in the real world like in some specific place and i ended up getting some answers in cleveland. And why cleveland. Well cleveland along with detroit has the highest percentage of people living in poverty of any big city in the country. It also like a lot of cities has a climate action plan and three years ago city officials decided to tear up their existing plan and write a new one this time incorporating economic and racial equity. They made it kind of a to do list. Here is how we would like to deal with climate change and also help people who need help the most okay so this to do list kind of laid the groundwork that biden administration is now about seems like it and now in turn the biden administration might be helping the city. Turn that plan into reality out because the administration wants to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into exactly the things that are at the top of cleveland's

"Surgery. President Cleveland began to wonder more and more about the after effects of this whole plan. It had already been explained to him that he was going to lose part of his jaw in the process and he had Dan Lamont reach out to Dr Brian to ask if his speaking voice was going to be impacted by the surgery the president also wanted to know how soon he could resume his duties begin meeting with politicians. Because this whole silver issue was still in the mix and what he was really asking was how soon he could do his job without anybody realizing that the president had had surgery so Bryant explained that. Initially the president's speech would be different but that he was working with a prostitute contest he would make an artificial jaw. That could fix the problem and as for meetings it was going to take a month for the president to recover. He tried to be clear that this was an estimate. Presuming everything went well. He did withhold some information though so that he didn't add stress to the situation specifically. He did not bring up the possibility that they might need to remove a section of skull above the jaw if it turned out the cancer had spread farther than they realized. Yeah his logic in. That was like if we have to do that. There is no covering this up anyway so I may as well not even tell him because I can't give him any kind of assurance that we can keep a secret at that point. In the meantime President Cleveland worked really furiously to handle as much of his work ahead of the trip on the united as he could something he was known for having was a very cluttered desk and he was really trying to get it completely cleared off and then late in the afternoon on June thirtieth in Lamont travelled by train in a private Carta Jersey City and from there they took a ferry Manhattan and then they made the final leg to peer a in a carriage and then they're they boarded a small boat which took them to the Oneida which was waiting in the East river when a reporter approached him during the ferry ride. The president said that he was just going to his summer house for arrest. The doctors were already on board. They had all arrived that afternoon. All leaving Manhattan from different peers. So that they did not draw attention. All the men spent a cordial evening together before retiring to bed. The next morning started with a physical exam of the president which Dr Jane Janeway conducted. He was happy with the president's vitals. Janeway gave him a mouth disinfectant to prepping for the surgery. There had been a brief hope that the doctor would be able to use nitrous oxide for the surgery rather than resorting to ether. Do the more dangerous nature of ether and possible poor reactions to it but they realize that the tumor was bad enough that that was simply not going to work so the decision was made that they would start with nitrous and then they would transition to either if they needed to after the pre surgery checks and a little bit of breakfast. The United started its journey and once the yacht passed into the long island sound. They all made their way to the saloon turned surgical suite just afternoon. The doctors along with the ship's Steward Charles Peterson who was assisting in a non medical capacity started an unprecedented operation on the president. The patient did not respond well to the nitrous. Oxide took a double dose to get him unconscious which meant that either. Was going to have to be used eventually. The procedure began with two TS being removed. Those were the by cusp is on his upper left jaw wants his teeth had been pulled by the dentist. The removal of the tumor began although it appeared for a brief moment that the president was actually waking up. So that meant that. They all had to stop what they were doing while. Additional gas was administered and then resume once the patient was fully under again. Once the cutting of the soft palate was complete the president was given ether before the damaged bone and surrounding tissue were removed. The cancer had spread more than had been expected but it did not affect one of the areas. They had been most concerned about which was the Izhak socket. Ultimately a section of the upper jaw several more teeth and a section of hard palate were also removed. It was over roughly ninety minutes after it started. President Cleveland started waking up just before three. Pm Obviously and unsurprisingly in pain he was given morphine and then taken with great effort he was a large man to his cabin and the rest of the day. One of the doctors always with him checking his vitals in standing by should he awake in his mouth was packed with gauze so even when he did try to speak a little bit. It was pretty rough going trying to understand him. But by evening he was deemed to be in stable condition which was a huge relief to everyone. And then the next day he was even better he was actually able to walk around the ship of it. So you recall earlier. They had told a reporter. He was on the way to his summer home. And when the ONEIDA had docked in buzzards Bay Massachusetts which was where that summer home was by Independence Day press started to wonder where he really was but he had said he was getting some rest and they had not seen anything of him so while there were rumors among the reporters that something might be up. They just really didn't have anything to report. A few papers. Did run articles that speculated that something might be wrong with the President Mrs Cleveland. Phoned the papers. Tell them that her husband was fishing and that all was well she kind of very politely was like please stop printing things. Suggesting there's something wrong with my husband Meanwhile Dr Hasbrouck. The dentist had left the yacht on July second for another appointment late July fourth like late. In the evening the rest of the surgical team was led off at Sag harbor although Bryant just went ashore at Sag harbor briefly and then returned to the yacht. After a quick supply run and then he in Cleveland traveled onto buzzards Bay or the first lady who at this point was seven months pregnant was waiting at Grey Gables which is the name of their summer home. The President Dr Bryant and Dan Lamont finally arrived there on late July fifths Lamont issued a statement to the press that they had simply been pretty leisurely about their travel and that they had state album the water longer than they had initially planned because the fishing was so good that they didn't WanNa come in and to address the health rumors. He said that the president had been dealing with the bout of rheumatism. But nothing more but rumors had already started spreading in New York that the president had a growth in his mouth. The reporter managed to get Dr Bryant when he was outside the House. But the doctor just corroborated the whole rheumatism story and ended the interview in questions about a tumor and surgery started. The reporter published the entire conversation but as time wore on and Brian and Lamont stuck to their stories. The press eventually bought it and by July eight started reporting that the president was recovering from some minor tooth malady and nothing more ominous than that. Yeah they let the two things slip in a little bit since they had already told the ships currently. It's like he just had to get some teeth bowl. It's no big until I tend. The president was recovered enough to go out fishing with Lamont and Bryant on his sailboat which was named the roofs presumably for his toddler daughter. They had a child already while they were pregnant with their second during his stay at Grey Gables Process Dante's Castle Gibson had set up a little lab at the House and he was able to cast the president's mouth and make vulcanized plate that plugged the hole that had been left by the surgery in this played also made Cleveland's cheek and face look normal and all of this helped sell the reuss that he had never been seriously ill sometime in mid July Bryant noticed during an examination of Cleveland's mouth that there was another growth at the edge of the surgical wound. The entire team was brought back except for Dr Hasbrouck who had leaked the story in New York. Once again they use the operating room on the United on July seventeenth. The procedure seems to have been short and uncomplicated and to the outside world hit appeared that the president had just gone on a day trip with his friend. Benedict quick that it was like a normal overnight trip. He was back the next morning but as the president's life was returning to something that looked like normal and he was starting to take meetings again a New York reporter named EJ Edwards was on the case. It turned out that when Dr Hasbro had taken the job. He had done so with the understanding that he was going to be able to leave the uniter right after the surgery and make another appointment where he had promised to handle anesthesia but because he was dropped off on July second instead of July first which is what he had initially asked for. He was so late to the procedure that it was cancelled and to explain his absence. Heap spilled the beans on the president's secret surgery in turn the man that he told shared that information and it made its way to the reporter Edwards Edwards carefully checked out this story and it did not run until August twenty third when it appeared in the Philadelphia Press under the headline quote. The president a very sick man an operation performed on him on Mr Bendix yacht part of the jar removed. Yeah he had a lot of the details. A hundred percent rate. There were a few things that weren't quite accurate and the dentist had only named himself and Dr Bryant. The other doctors names were at least left out of it but in going to press with this story Edwards was gambling and ultimately he lost although his story was picked up by the wire newspapers everywhere. The President of course flatly denied it and because there was a lot of competition amongst papers there were other outlets perfectly willing to defend the story that the president was fine and flat out accused. Ej Edwards lying. And just making this entire thing up. Alexander McClure rival paper. The Philadelphia Times was friends with grover Cleveland and he helped to discredit Edwards to help with his version of the story. Which was that? He was in perfect health. The president who had been kind of reclusive despite the raging war going on over silver in Washington. Dc had started making some really obvious public outings. He would even take Francis who was due to deliver a baby at any day on a trip from buzzards bay to Washington so as the Sherman Silver Purchase. Act was facing repeal which eventually happened and he was making a good recovery and welcoming his second daughter into the world grover. Cleveland found that the press was more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Then this reporter. Ej Edwards in the controversy over the story deeply damage the reporters reputation although he did continue to work in reporting grover. Cleveland died on June twenty-fourth nineteen eight and the secret keepers regarding the events on the united in eighteen ninety three were also aging and dying when Dr Bryant died in nineteen fourteen that left only three living men who knew the entire truth they were John Erdman.

"With the panic and his Cleveland was working this. The Nation through that financial panic. He had a more personal crisis brewing. He was soon to be a father. Although that was not publicly known at the time and was not considered a crisis but his wife Francis was two months pregnant when president. Cleveland took his second oath of office. But the thing that would become more pressing with something that the president discovered eleven days after that April. Twenty third statement about repealing. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act on May fifth 1893. He noticed a rough spot on the roof of his mouth but really deep in the midst of running a country that was in a precarious state. He did not do anything about this. Initially but over the next six weeks that rough spot turned into a lump that got bigger reportedly. The president was often up at night because of it although whether that was from pain or from simply worrying about the situation is a little bit of an issue of speculation he actually had his wife Francis look at it and she was as she put it alarmed when I saw it and so she made the decision that they had to get a doctor to look at it immediately. The doctor was their regular physician. Dr Joseph Decatur Bryant. Dr Bryant was their family physician but he also specialized in oral tumors. So it makes sense that Francis would reach outside the government's presidential resources and get him involved. Francis wrote to Dr Bryant on June. Eighteenth tell him that. There was some sort of problem on the roof of her husband's mouth and that she would like to speak with the doctor. The next day Francis had errands on the nineteenth ticketed Jersey City and she asked for a meeting there in their brief visit. She told Dr Bryant the details of this gross appearance and also that she was quite worried about it the meeting ended with Bryant planning a trip to Washington. Dc to examine the president. Yeah there are actually some theories that probably When Grover Cleveland took office that he would have asked Bryant because he was a trusted family friend and had been their family doctor to become the presidential doctor but Bryant. Didn't we've has practice in New York But there was even while Francis was meeting with Dr Bryant. Another doctor on the case. The President's dentist had seen the lesion and so he contacted the president's doctor about it. That physician was Dr Robert M O'Reilly and so he had examined the president's mouth and he found that growth quite worrying as well. He wanted to have tissue from the growth tested. But without anyone knowing that the sample had come from the president's person so he took a scraping and he sent it as an anonymous sample to an army lab. While the president's name was not on the sample it did have a note that it was an incredibly important specimen. And that led pathologist Dr William Welsh to suspect that it was a sample of grover Cleveland's tissue. That probably made it a lot more unpleasant for him to come to the conclusion at the end of this examination that the sample was from a malignant tumor and as that lab examination was happening of the tissue. Dr Bryant had arrived in Washington and had seen President Cleveland himself. He described the tumor to his patient as quote a bad-looking tenant and he told him that he should have it removed and very soon so of course this was terrible news and not just because of the president had a frightening cancerous growth that could jeopardize his health or maybe his life also because cancer was really a PR nightmare. At this point. People wouldn't even say the word cancer if they could avoid it in any way they would use just to keep the name out of their mouths. This was of course almost a hundred and thirty years ago. The medical establishments understanding of cancer was a lot less robust than it is today and they were not nearly as many treatment options saying someone had cancer at the time was almost like saying they were already dead. Society was just downright phobic about it and there was serious stigma around it so for a president and one only just a few months into his term to have cancer was the kind of news that could cause a panic in the midst of an already existing financial panic political adversaries. And even those with whom the president had tentative ally. Ship could use that kind of information against him and his effort to repeal the Sherman silver purchase act could be completely ruined if people thought that he was in a weakened physical state. Dr Bryant thought the best course of treatment for president. Cleveland was surgery. He and Dr O'reilly discussed the matter and then met with the president and the President Secretary of Warren close friend. That was Dan Lamont. This quartet of men agreed right off the bat that the whole matter had to be kept entirely under wraps they were planning to do this surgery though so keeping it. Secret was a really complicated proposal. They had to perform the procedure somewhere. Very very private that automatically meant not hospital and it had to be done entirely with incisions inside the president's mouth so that no external scars would give the truth away this also meant and grover. Cleveland was apparently adamant about this. They could not shave his moustache And while Cleveland's summer home in Massachusetts was introduced as a possible location for the surgery. It was pretty quickly dismissed because the press was often lurking nearby especially if they knew the president was there eventually. The president introduced a very novel possibility he could have the surgery onboard the Oneida a yacht owned by his friend Elias Benedict and that the two too often taken out for fishing trips. The use of a boat was of course super risky. But because Cleveland had been on that boat many times it would arouse zero suspicions for him to take a trip aboard it and while the doctors pressed for an immediate surgery. The president needed time to put some things in order before he could do it. This meeting took place on June twenty third and the President agreed that he would be ready on July. First in the meantime Dr Riley monitored his health and Dr Bryant put together a trustworthy surgical team. Dan Lamont made sure all the president's arrangements in Washington were taken care of and Grover Cleveland. We should mention was not a person who is in otherwise great health. When this whole plan was forming. He had a taste for really rich food which has caused him to develop gout and he drank quite a bit and he smoked That initial rough spot. That he felt was in the place for the end of his cigar usually sat in his mouse. He also likely had high blood pressure so anesthesia. Let alone going through a surgery and at this point. Remember like we're in the ether phase. we'll talk about that in a little bit and there. Was this very real possibility. That a more serious situation might reveal itself once that surgery was underway if the growth was more expansive than had been apparent upon examination. So this whole thing was a significant risk and the worst case scenario was that the president would die. Bryant immediately reached out to a colleague named Dr William Williams keen telling him that he wished to speak to him about a very important but private matter in a scene. That would be right at home in a spy thriller keen and Bryant a few days later on the deck of an empty fairy Bryant was totally straightforward and told keen about the president's need for surgery that the surgery had to happen in secret on a yacht and that he wanted keen to be on the surgical team keen was exactly the man you would want for this job a very well respected surgeon with an impeccable reputation who had been leading the medical field in the very new concept of brain surgery. Pain DIDN'T VOTE FOR GROVER CLEVELAND. But he had a great respect for the office and after a moment of thought on the matter he agreed to participate. There was as we said. Just a huge risk for the president but for a surgeon like keen at the top of his profession. There was also a great deal of risk if something went wrong his reputation which had been built over years of work and study would probably just crumble around him. Bryant recruited additional surgeons to be part of the Secret Presidential Surgery Team Dr Edward Janeway. Who is a professor of surgery at Bellevue Hospital? Medical College Dentists Doctor Ferdinand Hasbrouck who had an advanced knowledge of anesthesia as it existed at the time and then Brian Assistant Dr John Erdman. The plan was that Bryant would be the lead surgeon with keen and Erdman assisting Dr Hasbrouck would handle any tooth extractions that would need to be performed and would also manage anesthesia. Along with Dr O'Reilly and Dr Janeway would be in charge of monitoring the patient throughout Bryant also made all preparations for the yacht to be ready for this mission. The yacht had a saloon and it was decided that it would be transformed into an operating room. The furniture was removed and the space was disinfected at share was brought in for the president to sit in throughout the procedure special equipment and deliveries were explained away by Dr Bryant to the ship's crew. They were told. The president was going to have a tooth extraction on board and because the crew were accustomed to the president both being there and needing various special arrangements. They seem to accept this explanation. So coming up we're GONNA talk about the surgery itself and we'll get into that after we. I take a quick break in here from the sponsors keeps stuff..

"Cleveland Armani wanted to point seven kiss FM. So I think Netflix says this movie bird box, and every has been talking about it. Right. We saw it's inspired Tanya. I think you watch. Oh, that's it. We said what what's it you that the formula to making a successful movie? So you saw the formula in that movie. Correct. It was that clear. Clear data it seems like the right time. December fourteenth is the day to drop it when everyone's like chilling for the Mike home with the damn get one giant movie star in it, which I'm going to probably need your help with thinking like, Nicole Kidman or something on. Let's keep going. What else? And then a really interesting potline. Okay. So that's the formula to successful movie. Yes. To a like, a what is it forty five million, whatever? Blockbuster. So we said to her. Well, great. You should put good luck with this. Now, you know the formula put something together. So you're making moves. Yes. So one of my friends is a film executive. So I asked her could bounce some of my ideas before I'd like write the screenplay. I've never done before. But I have Google. So that's the first step. So I wanted to kind of like run the ideas by her to see which one she thinks is like more interesting for people. Can you run them by us? Sure. Okay. So they plotlines. Yeah. But it centers around our show. Okay. Let it already. So it's going to be our show. So it's gonna be three three ideas and a half one spruce, Nicole Kidman in the show. Well, we can decide once you can't like put her in. You have to like put the plot together. You said it's about our show. So I've Sistani Patty Tanya and Ryan whose Nicole Kidman. Well, I don't know. We're going to have to figure that out. She playing Tanya Orsini or you. Okay. So keep going. So one of them is it's a giant road trip. So we're going cross country. We're going from Los Angeles to Newark. But every stop that we have we encounter something from one of our pasts some going to have to sit down with each one of you and figure out which part. Is it like scary passer? It's scary. Okay. Because I think the best thriller thrillers. Are what really get does our route take us through Arizona. It. Sure does that's where her plight. There's all kinds of horror along the way. Yes, I guess mine could be in San Diego and then from San Diego, you go to Arizona. Yes. And Georgia right next door. The trip from Arizona, Georgia. So they're all going to have a good ending. 'cause I think that's whatever. Oh, someone should die. Well, people die along the way. Just not us. Oh, no. Someone should kill some us better. Yeah. For sure then. It's unpredictable. Okay. See these are the things that the film executive ill. I note. So then the other one is going to be like a reality of this morning show. So like things that are happening in our real lives where I think they will go in a year from now I oh fascinating. Then there's going to be a plot was at the end where kind of like the hills when like the bat we'd right off. And there's like it looks like we're in a back lot. So it's like was it a dream? Was it real was it like? Cliffhanger at the end. Okay. And then the third the third one is going to be a Sifi. This is not my favorite not mine either. Yeah. Number one. I also that in there. Let's lose tubs in Delaware or something. He makes it almost in New York. But we lose them in the small state of Delaware. We're in like a big car. Like, it's like, we're in this big van learn a lot about each other. It's almost like Ron tour. There was a movie about that. Sunshine. Stays limits. Daisy limits, sunshine sunshine, so it's kind of your version of that never saw it. So I'm happy to decide as research, but just tell is make sure that film executive it. Yeah. Okay. So. Yeah. Okay. So we'll do log all run that one by her. And then. Get back to us. We'll be here. All right. Great. We should probably get maybe two or maybe a few more movie stars. But that will come down come down the line. You really stumped here with a Nicole Kidman who's gonna point given. Why didn't you? In your little miss, sunshine means to get out script. I think we have a solid screenplay. I think that they'll just be jumping on board. For. Sure. All right. I got your nuts. Tickets next.
