"That song is a Hemi theme life is beautiful from the Roberto benigni movie la Vita E Bella performed by akino amini were recording as I said on your show, but maybe you're listening on a different day. You see the problem of asynchronicity. So over the course of the show, we will hear songs that ought to be heard on yoma Shaw and also on every other day of the year two. And now it's time for our first discussion, so Allison has the winter of our discontent now made way for the spring of our discontent. Discontent either way, right? So yeah, we're recording on Thursday, April 28th. It is three days before the end of Ramadan. It is impossible to know as we record if these three days will pass peaceably as the past days and weeks have not so much. Last week on how a bite as the Temple Mount is Jews call it or alcohol, I'll show if the noble sanctuary is Muslims call it. There was violence and injury almost every day. The troubles there started in earnest in the early morning of April 15th, when Palestinian protesters and prayer goers marched outside the Al-Aqsa Mosque at 4 a.m. with Palestinian and Hamas flags. That part, everyone pretty much agrees on, although after that, the report's diverge. Police reports say that protesters started to shower rocks and firecrackers down on Jewish prayer goers below making their way to the Western Wall from morning prayers. Palestinians at the site report that polys lost patients with the protesters lobbying tear gas canisters and stun grenades into the crowd beating back protesters with batons and firing rubber bullets. According to the police, a group of protesters barricaded themselves inside the mosque with the cache of stones that they threw at police officers from the house of prayer, according to Palestinian sources, the mosque was billed mostly with worshipers, including elderly and quite young prayer goers, along with a small number of protesters who retreated to the mosque to escape the violence of the police. At 9 30 or so, police entered the mosque. According to police, this was after morning prayers, according to Palestinian sources, it was just after the muezzin announced adhan call to prayer. In the mosque, police evacuated worshippers with force, including free use of their batons. According to the Palestine Red Crescent society, a 158 Palestinians were hurt that morning. And according to police sources, 470 Palestinians were detained of whom a 130 were still in police custody the next day. After that, a demonstration in the town of um Al fahm turned violent battering police with rocks, a Palestinian stabbed a man in Haifa to retaliate, she said for the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. On April 17th, the Palestinians pelted with stones several buses on their way to the Western Wall injuring 7 Jews. It was on this day that ram, the United Arab list announced that it was freezing its membership in the governing coalition in response to the violence at Al aqsa. Since then, there has been less violence, but it has remained constant. Social media, of course, filled with short videos of Israeli soldiers using their batons against women, men and children. Of course, there's always a broader context to such things in the weeks just before and just after Ramadan started 441 Palestinians, including 84 children, were injured in IDF sweeps across the West Bank and 16 were killed. Most of the near nablus hevron and especially Janine. The IDF sweeps came in response to four Palestinian terror attacks in mostly Jewish cities between March 22nd and April 7th in Beersheba had been Tel Aviv. These attacks left 14 dead and dozens injured. The IGF estimated that its operation foil dozens of planned additional terror attacks on civilians in Israeli cities. Among the Palestinians killed there were gunmen and members of militant groups and there was also a 14 year old boy, a 34 year old attorney named Muhammad asof, who was killed while dropping kids off at school, and a 47 year old woman named radi Ibrahim Ali sabatin, who was shot unarmed near a makeshift checkpoint near Bethlehem after she approached soldiers in what they said was, quote, a suspicious manner. There are no doubt other such awful stories to be told. Which is all so terrible and yet somehow so familiar. The cycle of violence that breeds violence that somehow always finds expression to in the holiest sites in the old city of Jerusalem. So you guys, first of all, Sally. Some open ended questions. What is going on? Why? Is there something that someone could and should be doing that might keep it from happening? Or is it as some people say, just an inevitability here, where seasons of calm are inevitably replaced by seasons of violence just as winter gives way to spring. And I'm also interested in hearing what you make of the observations of some Israeli commentators who are looking back at what happened last May. They are saying it all could have been much worse. Yeah, so you asked me what's going on, the occupation is going on. What can be done about it, we can end the occupation. And that's obviously a simplification of but it really is the source of things. Noah actually just sent me this topic. This week and basically asked me what their Allison should introduce it so I could respond first or if I should do it because you wanted to avoid me being the house Palestinian, a quote unquote. And I joked that I do feel the need to be the house Palestinian because we still unfortunately, you know, we're not at a place where my perspective is not as direly needed. So thank you, first of all, for that. And I just wanted the listeners to know that I'm not, I want to be the house Palestinian and I'm actually very proud to be that. And among other things. But in this topic, obviously, you know, it's a very important for me. To be here. First of all, before I go into it, I really want to say that for us Palestinians here, and I think it's important because it's my experience and it's important for me to share my experience. But also because it's very important to understand how we can how peace building can work within Israel and actually build a popular resistance to end occupation is our experience. I was actually in the U.S. when all of this happened in Tel Aviv, what happens in Tel Aviv was in the U.S. and I remember a lonely it happened actually right next to his house, his brother was literally like a hundred meters like walking his dog a lonely was like he just felt fell apart and he was like crying and we had to have a talk about shared society and peace building in Israel. An hour later. And I remember I was like shit. Not because also because it's my streets too, but I also didn't feel.

"Where you talk very very weird 'cause like you guys are like legit in that air dog day And it's really weird because if you put your headphones in and you're just like staring on the screen And then it just looks like you're talking to yourself It's kind of fun to think about now although of course for many people it was not at the time Turkism says this collection largely focuses on women in the pandemic There is an immediate urgent need to ensure that women's voices are heard and collected and remembered It's my hope that we will remember that there are voices that have been traditionally been left out and that we immediately respond saying your story has value Please don't lose it Please record it Please share it with us Turkish and spearheaded the project while parenting three young children and told us she's learned from that experience It doesn't have to be go go go all the time we can be flexible and it's okay to take a break when you need to A lesson for all kinds of times Powers unrest in Jerusalem affected Israeli and Palestinian leaders the unrest came at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound an area controlled by Israel and wholly to both Muslims and Jews The Israeli prime minister is Naftali Bennett the Palestinian president is Mahmoud Abbas both face pressure to stand up for their side and pierce Peter kenyon reports The images from the most sensitive site in Jerusalem set the region on edge Israeli police stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound responding to Palestinians who were gathering or throwing stones Medic said more than a 150 Palestinians were injured Israel said it arrested hundreds Then came the ripple effects rockets fired at Israel for militants in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon Israeli air strikes struck targets in central Gaza The unrest doesn't seem to be spiraling out of control yet but it is causing political dilemmas for leaders on both sides especially in Israel One response came in the Israeli parliament when a political party led by Palestinian citizens of Israel suspended its alliance with the coalition of Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett I met Israeli political analyst Dahlia scheindlin in Tel Aviv She said doubts about the government's future are growing Everybody thought it was one tiny step closer to a very big possibility of coalition collapse If the alarm crisis did damage Bennett one big beneficiary could be opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu Israel's longtime former leader now on trial for corruption Sheindlin says if elections are called Netanyahu's party would likely do well but he could still face problems putting together a coalition He will have to find all sorts of partners to go in with him and there is always the same problem as long as in Sanya who is standing trial There are parties who will not sit with him or under him as the head of the government Other analysts agree that low public regard for leaders in Jerusalem has been placed front and center by the events at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound Johannes Lesnar president of the Israel democracy institute says Israel's leaders urgently need calm to give themselves time to recover So as long as religious emotions continue to be invoked from the temple mound it will be very difficult to stabilize the coalition but if things calm down I think it will become sort of a short episode in the coalition's right But Lesnar also says he hopes the Arab party that suspended its role in the coalition the rom party is able to return to government because he wouldn't like to see an end to what he calls this important experiment Bringing the Arab party into the Israeli coalition making game is a game changer in Israeli politics It's pretty much brings back the center left parties into the political game As for the Palestinian authority and its president Mahmoud Abbas observers say both have had to face public outrage and the perception that the extremists of Hamas are leading the fight against Israel Former PA official Riyadh jirai says anger at a bus is running strong He was told a close aide to a bus was recently prevented from praying at the Al-Aqsa Mosque by worshipers angry at the apparent impotence of their president People understood that he can't do anything to deter Israel from committing violence and the church in Jerusalem But Jerry says people also believe that Abbas has no real political channel to Israeli leaders these days So while they're disappointed in their president they also have low expectations for what's possible One question is whether some could seek out more extreme solutions Some of.

"This past week clashes have broken out at the most sensitive and contested site in Jerusalem They are locks a mosque compound Palestinians most of them young through rocks at Israeli police who then use tear gas and other measures to try to disperse them All this during two of the holiest observances in the Muslim and Jewish calendars Ramadan and Passover It appears Peter kenyon joined us now from Jerusalem Peter thanks for being with us Hi Scott And help us understand what's been going on these past few days Well for most of this week young Palestinians would attend on prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and then some would throw rocks at Israeli police and they responded with percussion grenades rubber bullets yesterday there was gas dropped from an Israeli drone And right wing Jewish groups would make their way to the Temple Mount the most sacred site in Judaism and there have been daily tallies of injured or arrested Palestinians yesterday one young man fell into a coma He said to be in critical condition today is a bit different no stone throwing no police charge at a laksa but there is another issue and Israeli police presence at a Christian site The Church of the Holy Sepulchre where church officials say police are limiting the number of worshipers who can attend services They're demanding a special police permit to get in and the worshippers don't have those Meanwhile there have been rockets fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel including some early today Israel has been responding with air strikes and other measures and there have been incidents elsewhere and a curfew in the West Bank so basically a tense and sometimes violent week And are people in Jerusalem and all sides worried about where this might be headed They are a Palestinian attacks killed at least 14 people in Israel in recent weeks after all and Israeli military raids then led to a number of arrests in the West Bank and that situation in Gaza If you remember last year rocket fire from there led to an 11 day war between Israeli forces in Gaza militants 200 Palestinians reported killed more than a dozen Israelis And a lot of people are hoping to avoid anything like that Peter you've spoken with people on all sides How do they stake out their positions about what's going on at the mosque It's a almost astonishingly small area That's watched around the world It is and Alex has been under Israeli control for a long time since 1967 Today Palestinians are worried that Israel might be convinced to change the rules and making it less accessible for them I spoke with Sheik Omar Al quesadilla He's with the Islamic trust that's charged with overseeing the compound He's very polite man but he was uncompromising in his views Here's a bit of what he said He said our position is clear the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the sole property of the Muslim people who are not ready to divide or to share Now Israeli nationalists would say even though it's been a mosque for several centuries it's wholly to Jews as the site of the ancient temple and they should be allowed there too Doesn't seem to be an obvious compromise is there It doesn't The State Department was here Officials met with both Israeli and Palestinian leaders but no sign came out of deescalation immediately Israel said it simply trying to preserve the status quo at the Temple Mount The Palestinian authority is saying Washington should intervene For now most of the people I've spoken with don't see a clear path to calm the situation quickly but no doubt efforts will continue And Paris Peter kenyon in Jerusalem thanks so much Thanks Scott Republicans in Michigan today are expected to get a step closer to officially nominating someone to oversee voting in the state who denies the 2020 election results And piers miles parks covering coverage voting is in Grand Rapids where the state Republicans are holding their convention miles Thanks for being with us Hey Scott Thousands of Republicans congregating what exactly are they going to do So in essence they're deciding whether they want candidates on the ballot this November who share Trump's false beliefs about the 2020 election But in practice it gets a little more wonky than that Michigan is one of the few states that doesn't actually hold primaries for down ballot statewide races both Republicans and Democrats pick their nominees for November's general election at conventions made up of all these county delegates So a few thousand Republicans today will decide their slate for Secretary of State lieutenant governor attorney general and a bunch of other races too and in a couple of key races they'll be deciding whether to go forward with some fairly controversial people who Trump has endorsed Now you cover voting and the Secretary of State essentially counts the votes too so you're looking at this closely Yes absolutely NPR has been tracking all over the country where people who deny the 2020 election results are running to oversee voting in these positions People in these sorts of positions including in Michigan in 2020 stood up to a really prominent pressure campaign by Trump after the 2020 election and experts I've talked to are really worried about democracy if these sorts of people are replaced with party loyalists loyalists heading into 2022 and 2024 And one of these candidates is on the ballot in Michigan today Correct In Michigan a woman named Christina karamo is widely expected to win this endorsement today She's a community college professor who thinks the 2020 election was stolen among a bunch of other controversial stances that she has She's self identified as an anti vaxxer And she said she doesn't think evolution should be taught in schools according to reporting by CNN But she does have the endorsement of former president Trump who held a rally for her and other candidates He supporting in Michigan earlier this month Here's karamo speaking at that rally So I am so excited to be your next Secretary of State to mention that no matter who you vote for what you believe your vote counts and your vote is nullified by an illegal ballot.

"It's all things considered for NPR news I'm Daniel estrin And I'm Ari Shapiro Things are quiet now at one of Jerusalem's holiest sites for both Jews and Muslims But earlier today the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount was the scene of violence between Palestinians and Israeli riot police It's a scene that's all too familiar My colleague Daniel estrin who's been co host and all things considered this week covers the ongoing violence between Palestinians and Israelis day in and day out And this week he's been bringing us a story that takes us behind the headlines and shows us how this simmering conflict shapes everyday life even when there is no violence And Daniel this story you've been telling us takes place in Gaza which is home to 2 million Palestinians Yeah Ari in Gaza it is just so many aspects of life Routine life that are affected by the ongoing conflict including the healthcare system and it's all the way down to the story of one father named Yusuf kurd and his quest to get heart bypass surgery that could save his life And you've reported this week on why his case is too complicated for Gaza's health system which has been degraded by war and a blockade by Israel and Egypt since Israel's enemy Hamas took over 15 years ago Yeah they can't do his surgery in Gaza and his condition is getting worse He's been waiting for more than two months and finally he gets his Israeli security clearance to leave Gaza and to go to a Palestinian hospital in the Israeli occupied West Bank So today we have the final chapter of our story I travel with him on his journey from Gaza through Israel to the West Bank hospital The era's crossing is one of the world's most heavily fortified border crossings It's Israel's one civilian crossing.

"Fragile cease fire between Israel and Hamas into its second day, but it has been tested. Security forces firing tear gas when Palestinians and Israeli police briefly clashed at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque. Yesterday, your CBS is Holly Williams from Gaza, Israel's retaliation was to pummel the overcrowded Gaza Strip. Where they have no defense. The Israeli government claims it did unprecedented damage to her muss, killing more than 200 militants while doing its best to avoid civilians. But officials here say nearly 70 of those killed or two Red B 11 Day battle did kill more than 200, most of them in Gaza, also leaving large scale destruction. The United Nations has approved more than $18 million in humanitarian relief efforts.

"I just wanna make sure this doesn't lag. It seems like of course this topic of all things in a short show that i wanna get out quickly. Of course it's gonna lag. Looks good on there. Okay i'm going to keep going for some reason on my end it's really. It's hard for me to even see what's happening. But i'm just gonna power through but i wanted to share this really quickly. Something that star wilson made. I just thought it was fantastic. Just to you know by the way star is going to be doing some new exciting things for t- lab as well With a couple of new platforms. That were she's going to be working on the clips and different things t lab. But i just thought this is pretty cool. She's made this today. The te- lab team bring truth back journalism. You know it's really. It's really a proud to say that. I'm a part of something like this and proud to say that this is something that is in my opinion changing. What's happening today very clearly. So appreciate that star. But i also want to jump into israel re quickly in a couple quick points for people to know what's going on now. This is exactly what we expected. Exactly robert myself both told you would happen. This is after the so-called ceasefire which by the way it's happened more times than i can count and this is what always happens every time after the supposed. Ceasefires guess what. Israel's police stormed the awesome mosque. By the way which was exactly what started this to begin with. And if you actually look into the information and look at the real video from on the ground as opposed to just what. Israel's government tells the your government and then tells the media and they tell you what happened. It's all very clear. Even the new york times has actually admitted that this is where this began which was talking about specifically even going back to shakira of mispronouncing. It or not. I believe it's correct. The town where they started even before the walks moss began when they brushed in shot innocent people and cut off their their loudspeaker. And it's it was obviously incendiary. It led to violence which led to israel doing things which led you rockets flying right and that's not always how this goes but that's how this started. Even the your times pointed that out now after the cease the next day surprisingly not at all israel does something else which they hope in my opinion specifically their government specifically yahu will hold. This will cause something a rocket. That's my opinion. And i said this is punitive and petty israeli government action in the face of an embarrassment. This was a very clear embarrassment. As robert says. Israeli occupation forces attacked the al aqsa mosque by the way whitney and i are going to be talking. I can't i know i keep saying that. But we really are putting this together doc about a lot of stuff including hacks and and the things we talked about the past but specifically because of this the officer mosque and in important discussions of our prophecies and things that are very relevant to all of us today. That's coming soon. He says why because this is their way of looking strong. After the ceasefire it also risked provoking another reaction from gaza. Not even half a day and they broke the ceasefire stand. This is just because it's not happening with gaza spec- like specifically. This is violation of the ceasefire. But this is always what happens and this was the this is where i thought i had tweet for this. But so this is an overview there just gonna go ten hours back..

Israel and Hamas Agree to Cease-Fire Over Gaza Conflict

"On the streets of the Gaza Strip last night, Palestinians are celebrating the start of a cease fire between Hamas and Israel. In which both sides are claiming victory. Here is what that victory looks like 11. Days of rockets flying out of Gaza. 11 days of Israeli bombs striking Gaza, Palestinian officials say more than 234 people were killed 65 of them Children. In Gaza, hundreds of buildings were destroyed. Israeli authorities say Hamas rockets killed 12 people in Israel, including two Children. MPR's General Estrin joins us from Jerusalem Daniel Thanks for being there, first off is the ceasefire holding at this point. It is. The two sides are calling it quiet for quiet, which means both agree to stop firing. But if one side breaks a cease fire, the other response and officials say that probably in a few days there will be negotiations about the terms. Egypt called the cease fire at two a.m. local time. That's when it was supposed to start and right up to the deadline. There were strikes. The last Israeli strike was heard around one a.m.. The last Palestinian rocket fire was around 1:50:50 A.m.. And then right. At two A.m.. Palestinians went into the streets and Gaza celebrated also in the West Bank, also with the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, worshipers chanted and praised Hamas. And right away in Gaza, we saw thousands of people who had sought shelter and U N buildings, load up their trucks and drive home. We have not seen celebration gatherings among Israelis, but many Israelis, you know, have been up at night and protected rooms. Lot of air raid sirens in the middle of the night, and finally, they could get a little bit more sleep. But as Steve noted, both sides are declaring victory here. I mean, they could say whatever they want, but what's the reality? Well, The reality is both sides are trying to sell this as a victory to their own people who have suffered tremendously. Under the last 11 days in Gaza, Hamas held a rally in the middle of the night on the street, where the most devastating Israeli strikes took place where whole extended families were killed. Hamas leader said. This is one of our biggest victories ever. Thank you citizens. You are our swords for Jerusalem.

The circumstances were were around it and it turned out that the purpose of the visit was to meet with the chief of Sudan's Sovereignty Council Abdel Fattah El Brand and and they met and they agreed to start normalising normalizing ties between Uganda and Israel. And this is sort of the continuing eight of a process that seems to be back door coordination between the United States and Israel a lot of countries like Sudan African countries entries who have had very very closed attitudes towards the state of Israel have have realized that probably the key to getting taken the terror lists and being put in the good graces of the United States is through Jerusalem and therefore we've seen sort of a pattern of warming of ties between some of of these regimes including Chad for example which Netanyahu visited last year and Kind of understanding that as they move closer start towards Reconciliation with with Israel that they'll They'll get better treatment from the United States. At least that's that's the way it's interpreted on the side the The African and Asian countries that are that are moving towards warmer relations with Israel after decades of being closed towards that. So is that the reason why this is all happening now. Now the Sudan and Chad making overtures over receiving overtures from Israel simply so that they can get benefits from the United States. I'm do you know so. That's sort of the assumption obviously. Nobody's nobody's saying that out loud by the way he was in Uganda. Where this meeting with the chief of Of the Sudan Council that took place and at the same time it was announced that Uganda had agreed. We'll see if it happens if it had agreed to move. Its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. which which is another Another pattern of a move. That is that is An African country trying to to move closer to the United States via via Israel. But Yes the signs of cooperation and normalization appear to be coming from that place and of course the motivation on the Israeli side. Benjamin Netanyahu yeah was. He wants to show as many diplomatic accomplishments as possible before he heads towards elections which are in less than four weeks. Woods astonishing those. The likes of Sudan's ends information. Minister said that he had absolutely no information about the visit to Uganda. Why was this extensively kept quite secret? I think for both political and security reasons after the meeting took place the head of the Pilo Monitoring Committee part of the Palestinian Authority side Erakat said we aggressively condemn the meeting between the Sudanese president and a Tony'll and called it a stab in the back of the Palestinian nation in and deviation from the Arab consensus and that the timing is helpful to the trump administration and Netanyahu just as new peace plan was rolled out And according to Erekat eradicated the Palestinian issue by means of attacking the Al Aqsa Mosque and other holy places in Jerusalem. So these condemnations came after after the meeting and I think the reason it was kept so quiet and hush hush is so that these kind of condemnations wouldn't create political pressure that might prevent it from happening in the first place. You mentioned that. The Palestinians have objected fiercely to this decision. Will this move They've been trying to Effectively really drum up support from Arab nations and the Arab League including Sudan. This does not bode well for them. Does it. It doesn't what is you know. It's part of a pattern since the roll out of this peace plan which nobody is taking particularly seriously in terms of The likelihood that it will succeed but everyone on the the On the Palestinian side you know internationally views as a possible green light for Israel to to move ahead with With with annexation the Geo political calculation that everyone is assuming in the fact that many of the Arab nations are keeping rather quiet on the subject. Despite the Arab League's condemnation of the plan is simple calculation that much of the Sunni Arab world feels it needs the support of the United States and tacitly Israel to confront Iran and that that is currently much more important to it in a bigger priority than standing up for for the Palestinian cause.
