"Prepare for Your 2019 Now" - Digital Photography Podcast 664
This is digital story podcast number six six four December fourth two thousand eighteen today's theme is prepare for your two thousand nineteen. Now, I'm Derek story. If you wait until January first to choose the improvements that you wanna make in two thousand nineteen it's already too late before, you know, at the month will be gone in you won't have accomplished thing. Now, if you really want to up your game next year now is the time to start, and I have some great ideas for you in today's tedious photography podcast. Yes, it's true. December is a crazy month holiday madness for most of us. But that also means that family friends clients can also be a bit distracted during December in that might leave us a few windows to work on what I want to talk about today, which is preparing for two thousand nineteen now as artists as freelancers as people who, you know, photography is a very important part of our life or creativity is a very important part of our life, and possibly freelancing and even full business entrepreneur kind of thing is important to our lives as well. So all of those things require a bit of thinking a bit of planning a bit of what am I going to do next sort of thing in the time to do that is right now in December for two thousand nineteen because as I said at the top of the show if you wait until. January. It's already too late. The year has begun in. It's funny when we miss an opportunity, our human nature tendency is to say, well, I missed it. Okay. I'll get it next year. 'cause I've already messed it up for this year. I might as well just keep doing what I'm doing in keep doing what you're doing is exactly the thing that I don't want you to fall back into. Now. There are some things obviously that you want to keep doing the things that are working. But there are probably some things that could use a few adjustments any need to look at the whole picture in order to decide which falls into which category. So let's look at a few things that will help us this December. So that everything's locked and loaded by time. We pop those champagne corks on December thirty first here are a few things of that just happens to be five. I don't know where that came from this happens to be five just pickles out of mid air five things to consider. This month as you look towards two thousand nineteen now the first thing is to update your budget, and really budgets are so important, and I'm a big fan of budgets, because I think you need to know where you are before you can think about where you wanna go. In finances are always part of it as much as we'd like to think that money has nothing to do with business. It has a lot to do with business in especially if you're thinking about trying to new endeavor, then you wanna finance it. Now, I like the pay as I go, that's my way to do things. And so then budgets are even more important to me because I need to make sure that I have the funds necessary for these great ideas that I'm thinking about so I work on my two thousand nineteen budget in December. And I take a look at all the assets that I have I take a look at the liabilities that I have you know, what is my overhead? You know? What do I have to pay for mortgage here at the studio? You know, I have HOA dues here. I have electrobi- I have internet. I have all that sort of stuff. Those are all line items in my budget, and then look at the revenue streams that I'm pretty sure that I have at least I have them right now in going into the new year, and then the revenue streams that possibly I hope to have and put those all down there. And I look and see how this thing's stacks up. Now. What I like to see is a little bit of plus, right? A little bit of black in the ink there. I don't like reading very much, but sometimes we just have to deal with that. But either way rather as black or red or somewhere in between you need to know because that's going to influence the decisions that you make going into two thousand nineteen if you think that you have a little bit of surplus then you can use that money for investment into new projects into new equipment into new things. If it looks like it's going to be very tight, then that's going to influence your thinking. Going into next year. And that you're going to have to be more creative. Your new ideas will be less dependent on finances and really more dependent on you being ingenious now, a combination of ingenious and money is a killer combination. We don't always have that luxury update your budget. Get your head around your finances in no by the end of December where you're going to be at the start of the new year. Next take stock of your gear by this time in the year. We have pretty good idea of the equipment that we used a lot in two thousand eighteen in the stuff that really didn't get tapped very often in the stuff that we didn't use very often we need to take good look at that. Because it could be time to move that along to create space right to reduce clutter and to maybe create a little cash for possible new investments. So take a look at the gear take a look at what us a lot take a look at what you haven't used very much. And then look at the gaps and see what are the things that I need for what I wanna do next year. Now, I'll giving example of that. When I was examining things here over the last couple of weeks. I saw that I was short on portable space. In fact, I even wrote about the sandisk portable SSD, and I invested in. In one. I'm probably gonna in another one. Well, it's funny. How things happen as soon as I invested in that extra dispaced that I can carry around with me very easily in my laptop bag. I don't have to worry about being next to the DRO or some other. You know, big hard drive. I have this little SSD the fits in a pocket in my camera. Bag lo and behold, I got four big jobs. Just like, boom, boom, boom. And it would have been very difficult for me to do those jobs turn them around in a timely manner. If I did not have this portable this additional dispaced with me. So that investment that small investment hundred dollar investment is all I made hundred nineteen really helped me out on big projects that ran thousands of dollars each in. That's the kind of thing that I'm talking about. You know, you have to anticipate the gear that you're going to need. And then if you're not using stuff move it along move it along. There are always a few sentimental items that we hang onto no matter what I'm not talking about those. I'm talking about the stuff that is stuff. And if you're not using it let it go unless it has some overwriting reason number three create one new project that you're willing to take a risk with. So one thing as freelancers as artists, and maybe as entrepreneurs if you're doing this full time is event you can't go into the next year doing the same thing that you did this year. The reason why is things just change too quickly these days, if you anticipate just doing the same thing this year that you did last year, then you're probably going to slide backwards because the odds are very good that some of the things that you doing this year will go away, and that is a development in all honesty that I have noticed has become more profound in the last three or four years. I used to be able to hang onto things for three four five years, and you know, just really write them out and have a great time with revenue generating projects. Now, it seems like those projects last a year maybe a year and a half. And then something changes, someone changes circumstances change. And then I'm no longer part of that project. So I better have something else in the works already to help replace that revenue when I lose something in the time to do that is before you lose the stream, right? So in other words, this all just points to is that you want to continue to push forward. Even if you're comfortable at the moment, I think you need to push forward and create at least one new project that you're willing to take a risk with now. Some of those projects that I've done that with in the past have turned out quite well the. Workshop series, the film camera shop, the inner circle those were all new projects that I was willing to take a risk with in that they turned out very well. Now, I also have projects that didn't turn out quite as well. Photo help desk, the the website that I created. It didn't go anywhere. It didn't generate any revenue at all. And it just kind of just went thud. So that's the other part of this is that if you create when new project that you're willing to take a risk with there's no guarantee that is going to work. All right. So you have to also factor that in the bottom line on all of this is is that you have to keep pushing forward. Some things are going to work. Some things aren't things you're going to get to hang onto some things will fade away. It's all part of this the cycle. That's happening right now and everything is changing over much faster than it used to you have to be up to speed with that you have to be on that wave. If you're going to continue to be successful and to move forward item. Number four reinvest in your personal growth and personal growth is super important. For any of us that are onto yours. Freelancers or part time artists in the reason being is that our personal growth is what feels our creativity. So we need to be healthy as a person in order to be a good, creative personnel. You could argue well f Scott FitzGerald didn't seem that healthy. Fact, he seemed to have a bit of an alcohol problem yet. He created a lot of stuff he did create a lot of stuff. And at that time, you know, it was successful. But it's not a long term plan. And these folks tend not to have the longevity that they could have otherwise by investing in yourself projects for your personal growth, then you're fueling your feeling that creativity. The example that I just gave the other day. I wrote an article about this, and it was titled the value of journaling four, photographers. Now, I'm a big fan of journals. I think journals are fantastic. Static and the journaling that I'm talking about is a twist on the old, dear diary sort of thing. It is a journal that I maintain on my phone my iphone in as a journal based on photos. So the first part of the journal entry is me taking a photo. Not only do I have the visual part of the story. I also have all the meta data that goes with it and clothing location, whether time stamp all that good stuff. And then I add a journal entry. I add text on top of that. And when I end up with is usually kind of cool photo that I probably wouldn't have taken otherwise a journal entry that lets me know when things happened in especially as I look back over time. I go. Wow. When did that happen? Look back in my journal do search. It's all searchable. Oh that happened in January of two thousand seventeen that's really good to know. The big thing about journaling. And I talk about this in the article is. That the bulk of my Instagram feed comes from my journal in other words, those shots at our Instagram. I take because of my drive to maintain my journal because the journals important to me, and so I'm putting energy into it. And a lot of times the shot, so they create for the journal may great Instagram shots. So then I get an additional benefit to the journal in sometimes they'll shots that I take for the journal end up as being part of articles or or projects like something on Lynda dot com in just goes and goes and goes so instead of not having those shots at all suddenly I have journal entries. I have a historical document. I have something that's feeling my creativity. And then I'm producing content that I can use in other ways. So that's one example of me starting to project for my personal growth that seems to have helped all areas of my life, including my business and. Finally, number five commit to being bold. If you listen to Kelly Cox last week, you heard a perfect example of this here. She was she was on the cheer team the flag-waving team at Casta Berkeley. But she would bring her digital rebel with her and take some pictures at the football game. She decided that she really liked photography. So she got ten of her best shots that she captured with digital rebel. And she made the bold move of approaching Berkeley ethics. I believe in hopes of securing an internship. She took us ten shots. She said I'm gonna find the person to talk to that. Maybe could give me an internship as a photographer. She found that person that person liked her photos. She did get the internship. And now she shooting the Super Bowl that's a kind of boldness that I'm talking about. I'm not talking about the sort of boldness where you. Think you deserve a fifty thousand dollar grant because your stuff is better than everyone else's the grant, people will decide if your stuff is better than everyone else's. That's not yours to say that's not your decision. However, you being bowled by taking your work and by approaching people by approaching organizations that maybe could leverage that work and propel you forward that's being bold as having the guts to make that contact try to make something happen. A lot of times stuff won't happen. But when it does it's usually pretty good so commit to being bold being smart and getting your stuff out there, you have to be realistic, but you can also be hopeful while being realistic. So those are five things that I think would be good to consider for this month of December get a little momentum. Go. Going into the new year. So that way you can really enjoy your New Year's Eve. At the end of December. And then your ready to go on January first year ready to go while everyone else is recovering from a hangover, you're already plotting your next move for success for creativity and for happiness. The portfolio box. Inspirational photographer own my do I have a good one for you this leak? Her name is Simone, Rudd lawf- Simone, Rudd lawf-. She's a photographer from Byron day Australia now residing in Hamburg, Germany and her work. I have a link to her site in the show notes. And again, this is the thing that I'm looking for on these portfolio box artists is not only interesting artists in she does all sorts of coal stuff. In fact, one of her pages on her per folio box. Pro site are pull rights, and these Polaroid's are a lot of fun. And some of them are very cool. She does commercial work. She does editorial work. She's a fascinating person. And the thing that I like, and again, this is another thing that I look for on these feature photographer. Simone is not only a good shooter. But she's done something a little different with her portfolio box pro site. And I think it's worth looking at her site to get ideas on how to present your images now to piggyback on what else talking about in the previous segment her next big project for two thousand nineteen is quote. I'm currently opening a photo studio event space in Hamburg with my boyfriend who's also photographer which we plan on renting out in using ourself. We spent six months renovating it, and we're officially opening at the end of November, which means again a little bit of momentum going into two thousand nineteen. They're gonna get that space open. They're going to work out the bugs in December. And hopefully, they're going to have a good head of steam coming in January. So that's the kind of person she as gotta go over take a look at her sight, look how she's using portfolio box. Now. If you want to try portfolio box best way to go is to start with the tile on every page of the digital story portfolio box tile or the link that have in the show notes that'll take you over to our landing page now, even if you're setting up a free site, not the pro site you wanna start with our landing page because if you upgrade to pro you'll get a twenty percent discount off the eighty three dollar annual price. So that is a pretty big savings. And remember one of the things that you get with the pro site and cluding unlimited pages all that sort of stuff is that you get your own domain. And I think your own domain is really important. So instead of the portfolio box slash whatever your name as is just whatever your name is dub, dub, dub your name dot com. And that has a sweet sound to portfolio boxes the sponsor the digital story in when you're thinking about doing stuff in two thousand nineteen to really kind of move the. Ball forward. This is one of those things that you can do. I hope you go over and take a look at their landing page. Again, we have Tylenol the pages of digital story. Take a look at what they're doing take a look at what some of these other artists are doing pointing out. I'm showing you knew each week think about what you can do. Photokina two thousand nineteen gets postponed and will become an annual event starry and may twenty twenty. So I don't know how much of this is actually Keyna's misdoing or not let me read you what DP review rights and the back story on this was that after this photo kina that we just had September than it was going to become an annual event moving forward. Okay. That's the backstory. That's why this headline even exists. So DP review writes in two thousand seventeen photo Photokina organizers announced the world's largest trade fair would reposition itself as an annual event starting in two thousand eighteen and subsequently announced that after this year's Photokina, which took place in September. The event would be moved to the month of may going forward, which I'm totally against because it moves it away from October fest, but that's just a personal matter. Anyway, let me continue with what DP review says naturally. It was expected. The next photo kina. Event would take place in may two thousand nineteen but plans have changed according to the German photo industry association. Conceptual sponsor of the trade fair, the two thousand nineteen hundred Akina vent take place from Wednesday may twenty seventh twenty twenty through may thirtieth twenty twenty and I guess the reason is for that is that they just needed more time, and the people participating needed more time to make sure that they were ready to go in may of twenty twenty. So if you were planning to head to Cologne, Germany in two thousand nineteen you can still go you can still drink some great beer, and we still see the sights, but there will be no there until twenty twenty. We'll talk about film cameras for just a minute over the last year. I received a nation's from tedious members who have film cameras that need a good home. So what I do is. I inspect these items I repair in clean as well as I can. And then I list them in the film camera shop, which is on Oetzi where I find a good home for them. So if you're interested in donating please use the contact form, and I have a link on the nimble photographer site now Yar in Lombardo did exactly that writing to me quote. I will send the camera tomorrow. And I will take care of the shipping is the least I can do for all who have done for me in photography. I've gone back to Olympics because of you, and I could not be happier. You are on my bucket list to take photography workshop in two thousand twenty living on the east coast makes it a bit more difficult, but I'm going to make it happen. And I just love. Notes like that. I love contributions like that. I received a canon ills Alon with grip in each just a little bit of work and get cleaned up and running smoothly. I'm going to put it in the film camera shop, and it's all going to be because of your Enes contribution. If you want to contribute. If you have a film camera that just is gathering us as not doing anyone any good. I can get it to someone who will do. Good with it. I can get it to someone who shoot with it and bring it back to life again, just get in touch with me through the contact form on the nimble photographer site or just check out the link here in the show notes. And I appreciate everyone who has corresponded with me. And who has sent a camera long is really a fun project at helps sustain the podcast and gets them cameras in the hands of people who want to. Right. Just a couple updates before we move along here. So the tedious workshop season for two thousand nineteen is open. I'm working on the final itenerary, but we're also taking spots on the reserve list right now, if you want to see what the workshop season is for two thousand nineteen and I think it's a very good one. Just click on the link in the show notes. It'll take you over to the nimble photographer site. You can click on workshops air. He can just use the Lincoln the show. Now, we have four terrific events. We're going to start out in the high desert at Joshua tree. Then we're going to go to San Francisco and do some urban work, then we're going to explore some unusual places on the sonoma's coast, including places where movies have been shot, and then we're going to wrap up in the Humboldt redwoods north of here. With some really nice goodies and some nice add ons, including the picturesque. Ill river, four terrific, workshops, all of them have people signed up already they place their deposits, and they're on the reserve list. If you want to do an adventure in two thousand nineteen you want to join me and your peers here and tell you I find guy to hang out with I will admit that. But the people who really make the workshop or the other folks the other of photography community members that come out they're the ones that really make this a special event if you wanna hang out with your peers, your fellow photographers consider these four events find one that works in your schedule and join us this year. Make that happen. It will propel your photography forward. It will re energize you. Your eyes will be full. And hopefully, your hard drive will be full by the time. The New York Knicks are undefeated. I figure I gotta get some New York news up in there for this moment because my God, we all know that about a week and I ain't gonna be able to say that about the Knicks. I gotta take advantage of this moment while let's present it to me Neil Akina once again was impotent offensively. I don't want to say why he started David deal. I don't understand why he starting, but I do know that Tim Hardaway dropped thirty one last night. He looked good. In his Cantu had a respectable game with sixteen in eleven. Alonzo tria had the dunk on a night, but he gave you fifteen points off the bench. New York Knicks. They're look bad. Kevin knocks your first round, pick. Ninth over all four of sixty for the field. Twenty five percent. None impressive at all, but hell he's a rookie. He'll get it together. We know this. We'll see how he develops as time goes on. Obviously, I just wanted to get that out the way because the real news is that LeBrun James. Begins his career officially. As a Los Angeles Laker tonight game one of the regular season for the Los Angeles Lakers in Portland. I had the pleasure of having Irvin Magic Johnson, the great Irvin Magic Johnson, the magic man, all my television show this morning. I take on ESPN and Irvin Magic Johnson in the house. And obviously he's not going to go to Poland because he wants to show to be about LeBron and the play is not himself. He'll be at the staple center Saturday night though when they go up against the Houston Rockets and speaking of the Houston Rockets. Wow. Look, I'm going to say this. I love James harden. I'm not worried about what happened last night with him. I love James, harden. I love him as a person. I love him as a star in this league as the reigning league MVP, which he so richly deserved love, James harden. Love c. p. three, I think as a quit essential natural pure point guard, I think c. p. three is the greatest point guard of his generation. Pure point guard not the greatest shoot in the world like Steph, curry, not the most point guard in NBA history, like Russell Westbrook. I'm just talking about being an orchestrated, a general running show doing the kind of things that c. p. three has shown to do. I am lead. Y'all know right now. That CPI three is the greatest pure point. God of this generation. And I say all of that to say y'all that it don't mean a damn thing based on what I saw last night, it's just game one of the regular season game one. It's just one game. But one thing is all I needed to see to remind me that this team is going to struggle defensively because last night that was a horror show. That was a pill unadulterated in thing. Horace show. What open layups guys standing around they're taking pitches before they received passes taking uncontested shots Marotta looking like the second coming to Larry Bird dropping thirty. Anthony Davis looking like that league MVP to be. Although I still believe instead of LeBron James because I refuse to believe that some do that's playing forty one nights a year at the smoothie King Center is going to win it MVP. Why can't I just can't see it. Anthony Davis is a star a superstar. What are the top three players in the world making an argument that he is indeed, number one, putting on an absolute show last night with thirty two, sixteen and eight. But how difficult was that to do? It gets this rockets defense, Julius rare. There was a reserve for the Lakers. He dropped twenty five, eight Marotta JR is the perfect complement to Anthony Davis, but damn thirty and ten. I mean, he looked like Larry Bird up there. He looked just like Larry Bird. It was ridiculous. It was ridiculous. And we're talking about a Mike, Dan, Tony team. That's the prize the hell out of all of us last year because they were so much better defensively than we had ever anticipated having coach Diller on his squad or what have you who's no to know what thing too, about defense, former head coach in Denver, a buddy of Dan Tony on his staff, obviously Dillard with somebody that was spearheading that defense and we get it, but losing Trevor Aretha. Losing travel reason this year to the Phoenix Suns who I'm about to get into in the mid about away. Losing that. Do. I gotta tell you something. That's a big loss for the Houston Rockets. Luke Inbar moutain not so much even though he could defend, but definitely losing Trevor Aretha who is so under appreciated. Who is so underappreciated. I gotta tell you something that's a devastating blow to the Houston Rockets. They're not the same team. They're not to say team and as great as James harden and p. three off, they're going to have a problem against lengthy. Defenders liked the defenders. New Orleans have drew holiday is not a miniature God. Anthony Davis is not just big Tommy's bake six tenths six eleven, who could defend far positions. Marotta is about six, nine, six, ten. And their presence on the court elevates the importance of Carmelo Anthony who couldn't give nothing but nine points last night and it just was launching one jump shot after another. When they fall, he'll be prolific when they don't fall. It's a problem. Because James harden, it's going to need help on the perimeter from someone other they, Chris, Paul. Now you have to remember in game seven at the Western Conference finals last year when the Houston Rockets lost. To the Golden State Warriors? Trevor REEs a shot. Oh, a fifteen. He missed all twelve. I think it was all a twelve or fifteen, but he either missed nine or twelve of his three point shots. I got to look up that number again, but I know he went zero. He didn't make a field goal in the Western Conference finals game seven last year. But for the most part, Trevor reason was hitting those jump shots during the season. Last night. He couldn't do it. He couldn't do it. Yes, they still have Eric Gordon? Yes. They still have PJ Tucker fans of both of those guys. You know how feel about CPI three and Harding, but you're only defenders tuck in Capella. So when you look at it from that perspective, and by the way Carmelo came off the bench, you're going to have to start him. Camello is going to have to start. Come mellow, play twenty seven minutes. I'm telling you right now. Mike dantonio. If you're anywhere listening to me, stop listening to all of this PC crap. Ignore it. Carmelo Anthony doesn't need to be coming off the bench. Every Gordon, it doesn't matter whether he starting coming off the bench. He's gonna be recorded. Carmelo is not going to be affective for you. Coming off the bench stopped listening to his dribble. Oh, you know, of just gonna play with role. They want me to play uncomfortable with my role and you know it'll be all right, and I'm just going to do my us stop at Hayes, Carmelo Anthony, not only as a starter. He's been a star at the vast majority of his career. This is not somebody that's going to ever be comfortable coming off the bench psychologically. I'm telling you what I know. He'll probably admit it in a thirty for thirty conversation. Somewhere in the years to come until then he'll listen to LeBron. And they'll go to the Rachel Nichols Brian windows of the world and others my colleagues who do a phenomenal job for us and he'll sit up there and give you whatever politically, correct speech. He wants to give enor- him, ignore him, ladies and gentlemen, Carmelo. Anthony needs to be starting. Though. Listen to that, dribble with him talking that crap about how he doesn't want. He doesn't mind. Of course he might wanna start, but he's willing to accept whatever role. No, he's not. No, he's not. It's going to be an adjustment to come off the bitch, get himself warmed up, get into a groove. He's going to try to overcompensate he's gonna, make them rely on jumpers, even more. He's not going to be nearly as affected and you're going to see him knows dot Mark. My words Carmelo Anthony has to start. Mariot and even then a nickel help you to way your defense lip because they were so God awful. That Jeff Van Gundy. Exercised redundancy by using the word awful on three or four occasions within the same damn sentence. Awful, awful, awful, awful defense, it was. It was that bad? It was that bad. It was so bad. More Jackson was happy. He was at the clippers game last night, so he didn't have to waste the time flying to Houston for nothing. Last night's game is the kind of game that will make the media turn against the team because you got to fly even though h town Houston's a great town, and I love being there and a fans of phenomenal and Toyota's centers, phenomenal and bought a way to people that work in the Toyota center. I miss all y'all because they were absolutely wonderful to me. I love y'all loved a mess out of y'all hope to be back, but let me tell you something. That's a long ride from that airport to the Houston to the Toyota center. I'll tell you that right now when you gotta go through all of that to get to a game to watch that nonsense that we saw last night, it makes you mad at the team. It really does. It really does. This is the reason why we give back to the brawn James in the opener tonight against Portland, because guess what? Ladies and gentlemen. Would that defense Houston, they beaten LA and I believe Houston is the only team standing in the way of. LA Golden State conference finals. Now, granted, I thought the malls though damore Derosier dropped twenty three last night for the Spurs, and that's a great pick up. You gotta lose Linnet picking up the Marta Rosen, eight bad. I'm here to tell you that right now and to monitor Rosen being in San Antonio is a good thing. I watched Utah, but my man Donovan Mitchell. My rookie of the year, who's a stud in Ingle help contribute as well and Utah did their thing. I'm not ignoring them. I'm not ignoring Portland tonight, even though they got swept into the playoffs to New Orleans last year Damian Lillard as my brother. I love him. And I think tonight that's the number one thing the Lakers have to watch out for because I think Damian Lillard is gonna put on a show. I'm telling you that right now. It's the table color. By the way. CJ McCollum has invited me to do his podcast ladies and gentlemen, and I will be doing that shortly because I believe that when you are the media and you're sitting in a position like I'm sitting in where I get to talk and pontificate about others while at the same time. Ask questions when I'm interviewing them, I believe it's my obligation to make myself available for those of them who want to talk to me. So CJ McCullough who's extended an invite on his podcast that will be coming up shortly. I will be appearing on his pockets. I don't know what the date is, but whatever date he wants to be on, I'm going to be on an Obama the way that also it does. I haven't received an invite, but if LeBron every invited me on the shop, I show up to that too because I run it from nobody just like I grill. I don't mind being grew hell. I got grilled last night at the staple center because I'm talking to the Denver Nuggets, congratulate them on a good. Season last year, including a coach coach alone, by the way who just agreed to a contract extension and he deserves it because they've been moving up and up and up over his three years in Denver, I'm proud of that man in the job that he's done with this young team. He deserves that extension, but I was talking to the rest of the fellas the Gary Harrison of the world and others because I liked Denver's crew and I'm a big fan. I'm Murray that shooter from Kentucky. I love his game, but I got something, but is there Thomas rolled up on me question my real news from time to time, but he was very respectful and very, very nice. But he accused me of being real like eighty five, fifteen percent. I think it was something like that. Not just a great. I'm real a one hundred percent at the top, but I love Ozzy at Thomas and I want him to get his money. But since he confronted me in front of the players, I told them, I'm company watch it, you you, Paul them and give you props, you don't ball. You're going to hear about it. And of course not say at Thomas is welcome to come on this show or any of my shows anytime he wants to. I like that brother. I wish it well. So I ain't that he do anything that was offensive to me, so I don't want anybody take it all in fun and love. But I'm just saying, when you look at the Western Conference, I'm watching all of these teams notice that in say, Minnesota. Notice that is Minnesota. Who lost last night, Jimmy Butler ball, but they lost. I see Minnesota as a team. We want way out. I t's Lakers on the team or the way in and I'm looking at the Western Conference and I'm thinking Golden State Houston. LA Lakers, Utah, Jazz Portland trailblazers, New Orleans pelicans. Right? That's six of the team. I mentioned Utah. Who am I forgetting of in Denver, I don't think it's going gonna, be Minnesota different things going to be one of the. I think it will be one or the other. Those teams. I'm looking at. And I gotta get back to New Orleans in this respect. And need to apologize. We gotta be real. I need to apologize. That damn Anthony Davis is something special, but I don't even know apology to him because I know he's awesome always have. He's sensational. That damn Etowah more with Alfred Peyton. That back court, I thought they would go suffer from losing Rondo. I liked him brothers. They can play. They've got linked. They've got size in attack mo- I like what I see from them. I really, really do. I really like what I see from them now, again, it was against Houston defense, which was just awful. I mean embarrassingly awful. Let me share a story, which all the put a perspective y. always worry about a Mike, then Tony defense. And I hate saying stuff like this because I genuinely like migraine Tony. By the way he was my coach of the year last year. I thought he should have got coach of the year last year. And not only did. I think he should get coach of the year last year. I genuinely like him as a person I really do. Here's my issue with Mike dantonio. Let me share a little story, which all that transpired years ago of a guy which it was. But it was when Mike dantonio was coaching in Phoenix and Jimmy Jackson had gotten traded. To the Phoenix Suns for those of you who don't know, Jimmy Jackson, you should know he started Ohio State. He played in the NBA, you know, in Dallas and he went to Philadelphia for a few years. He's been all over the place, but he had a decent MBA career really good. Gosh, she has the same birthday as yours truly topa fourteenth by the way. And now he does a great job for Fox Sports. You should listen to him any chance you get a good brother too. Jimmy Jackson gets traded to Phoenix. And he gets into the game and he turns over the ball. So he turned over the ball and the and the goddess stole the definitive stole the ball from him is racing up caught with the ball on a fast break. Jimmy Jackson, obviously, hacks him so he could denied a free layup and send them to the free throw line. Then Tony. Yelled out to Jimmy Jackson coming coming. Jimmy Jackson came over to him. He says, Jimmy, Jackson quote. We don't do that here. You let that man school. It keeps up the pace when you file them and interrupts it. We don't want to let them school. Teams that win championships, don't say things like that. Finally, one coach in NBA history who has ever said such a thing, and I'll give you a one of my checks. It's never happened. Coaches don't think like that. At least once upon a time. This is actually how did Tony thought. So when you look at these Los Angeles, so you look at these Houston Rockets that the concern that you have to have. Because we, you look at them, you have to wonder what kind of priority defense is. That's why I got Houston fallen off a little bit. And the Lakers elevating because of it. And I tell anybody to tell me I'm wrong about that. It at eight, say ESPN is the number to call this eight, seven to nine, three, seven, seven, six. You listening to the Stephen Smith show ESPN radio that put your calls and more in a minute. I think smoking always affected my daily life because I was a closet smoker. It really sort of controlled my entire day. My boss is the one that recommended jewel, so I decided to give it a try. You'll seem to the Stephen a Smith show podcast. Let me not be negligent in my praise by failing to bring up Kimball Walker of the Charlotte Hornets and the absolute show that he put on last night against the Greek freak in the Milwaukee Bucks almost brought him back to victory. Ultimately, the Greek freak is something to behold he something special about Kimball Walker, forty one points on the night, what is insatiable form? It's on his part, my brother, Michael Jordan is going to have to do something to get him somehow. NNcholas tune. I mean, if you go miss the last shot being wide open like that, could you at least had a DC to hit the rim? I mean, what's up with the Brickley? What's up with that? 'cause you at least hit the damn rim with the money you get paid, at least hit the rim, does at the rim hit the rim, so we can look at it as you missed a shot as opposed to damn he choked. I mean talking about, I mean, what are your construction worker that was a bricklayer right there hit the rim. Does it the rip. Stephen, a Smith show ESPN radio's presented by progressive insurance comparing rates to help you save call a click today and find out how much progressive could save you to the phones. We go at eight at eight, say ESPN is triple eight, seven to nine, three, seven, seven, six. Let's go. To my manner Tyrone you live. Stephen talk to me. Hey, hey, how you doing? I'm good talk. Okay. I got to really brief quantify me being an avid New York need fan too. I like to know your opinion about this is the first time we in a long time. We've had a real real legitimate coach, how much they think with fears being there is gonna help attract some of the free agents starting next year and in the years to come. Well, that's that's actually what they're banking on. Because what they're banking on is that fizz Dale who has an excellent relationship with LeBron James and d. Wade, if you were called when he was let go by Memphis unceremoniously even though it was a job he wanted to be let go. He didn't wanna be there any longer because you know it was just it was just a sinking ship and he knew it. And his relationship with Markelle soul was an ideal to reality is, is that LeBron James and the Wayne Wade did not hesitate to speak up on his behalf as an assistant coach onto Eric -sposed to in my. Cami for all four years. They went to the finals. He has a great great reputation with the players. The organization at a Miami Heat speaks up for him on his behalf. He's very close to a lot of those guys d- way got married to Gabrielle union. He was at the wedding. You know, he's there for a lot of the players and what have you got a lot of love for him. And so when those guys are circulating noise about you where they're talking to you and talking about you in a very positive fashion, one could easily surmise it that serves him well, when it comes to the recruitment of additional players in the future. Annum here, Royal ivory are going to be a really good up and coming coach also. But yes, he has four live role. I've got some promise. I know him from queens, does a lot of good community work as well. I got a lot of love for rural IV as well. I'm, I'm rooting for him. Go ahead and my second question we and I notice topics I don't jump down metro girl stabili what Cain, the bumps in promoters give us these fights. Man like Dana white doing USC had to wait on while the Joshua and and why why they can give us these five because the promoters controlled and instead of a sanction embody and it doesn't benefit them. Like, for example, give your perfect example. Daler Hoya just got Kamilo Alvarez onto a, you know, a five year deal. I think it's like eleven fight for like three hundred and seventy five million. Okay. Or like five price for like three hundred and seventy five million dollars. We would like to see Cannella of against certain fighters. We'd love to see, for example, Terence Crawford going up against aerospace, junior, but tarot Terence Crawford is a Bob Amorim fighter. Arrow spins junior is an hour Heyman fighter with the pro championship boxing group, who by the way, has an incredible staple. By the way. We don't talk enough about our Hayman, but he's doing a phenomenal job, make no mistake about it. Here's the problem with all of that. If in order for those two guys to fight, there's a fight that takes place before they actually get in the ring. And a fight would be between Bob Arum and our Heyman and Bob Arum is going to go in there thinking that he's the Lister and our Haymond certainly ain't gonna take a back seat because he's accomplished in his own right. And so as a result is very, very difficult to reach those deals, which is, why does fighters ended up having to wait to tangle with one another because everybody's everybody's trying to get a bigger chunk of the pie for years may, whether that's why you always hear Mayweather talk about my own boss because we're Paki our and those boys will guess what if you got to promote like Bob Arum, controlling your rights, etc. He's going to go into. Negotiating room against bay weather and like, I'm the eight, listen, I'm gonna make demands that you know may whether ain't going back from that and that's where your problem lies. Right. Well, I appreciate you, love you. Really appreciate it, man, love you back, man. Let's go to Albert. You live with Stephen eight. What's up. Stephen eight quick question for you, sir. So we know that quite lettered and Jimmy Butler supposedly wanna play for the clippers in LA, not necessarily, but go ahead. But what if Katie ops ups out at the end of the season, he's expect that he will opt out at the end of the year and joins the clippers to challenge the Brown for LA. Well, you could say that, but we're also hearing k d and the Knicks. Okay. And so so. So in other words, I don't think k. d. minds battling LeBron on the court, but I don't know if he wants any piece of LeBron in terms of popularity. Like if you plan for the clippers that you fight with LeBron for LA and Obama the way LeBron has the backdrop of the l. a. brand accentuated by Irvin Magic Johnson running basketball operations, which is far more profound than anything. The clippers could throw at you, even though they've got Doc Rivers and Jerry West. So I don't know if that's what Kevin Durant wants a matter of fact, I willing to bet my money that Kevin Durant with elect to go and play with LeBron and LA before playing with the clippers. Now he might choose the Knicks over the Lakers, but I don't think he would choose the clippers over the Lakers. Gotcha. Got you, brother. All right. Appreciate the call, man. Thank you. Daryl, you lava? Stephen, what's up. Are you doing Steve remain? I'm gonna shout out to your ram and with the ceiling Rams they harm come this week. My daughter go there. She my daughter went there. And when you had that tape on, she was on there with it. So give big shout out the soon. The Rams Winston, Salem, my alma mater loved them, folks. There shout out to all the y'all's Stephen, their loves, you loves all of your, you know, Aggie pride die. That means AT ANT forget it's Winston, Salem, but go ahead, go ahead. Say, if Kimball come along, shooting hitting forty one points and your other team hitting about eleven point something, right? The ball is not just move right. You know, I think he should come off the bits and put Parker start. Listen, you could say that all you want to bet at some point in time. Excuse me. At some point in time you're Charlotte, you, my brother, Michael Jordan. You're going to have to get Kemba Walker some out. NNcholas per to make the answer. He's a nice. Decent player did a really good job when he was in Portland. I don't know anything noteworthy that he's done since he's arrived in Charlotte or I'm just, I'm just a real, what you. Just what you. I don't know anything that he's done. That's been noteworthy. And even though Kimball walkers on the record so I can about how he wants to stay. The problem with it is why should he want to. If gods like nNcholas tomb are your second option. I need to see more from this guy. I really, really do and I'm not satisfied to be quite honest with you. I I really not satisfied and I need to see more from him. I'm just being straight up and down with you about it. They lost. That was a thriller last night. One, thirteen one twelve that they lost to Milwaukee. No question about that. When you look at the Greek freak twenty five eighteen and eight just putting you on notice here he comes but Kimble Walker. I mean, he shoots the ball twenty nine times your next shooter is Jeremy. Lamb would eleven shots. Okay. Or actually, Maliki monk was sixteen and I liked the way Malinche monk last night by the way, but I need more from a nNcholas platoon. I really, really do. I really do. And I didn't see that last night and I got real problems with that. That's just my personal opinion. They might be just men. My need to bench Mathoma less. Somebody else come trade and one. Well, you got a good point there. I gotta pay attention to all of this and see what they're doing. I gotta sit and listen. It's just one game and I gotta pay attention to a lot of stuff that's going on twenty million dollars coming over Charlet cap at the end of the season. So we'll be it'll be interesting to see what happens. But you got beyond bow their, he's making seventeen million dollars, Marvin Williams, decent player, but for fifteen million dollars, I'd like to see more from him. No question about it. Jeremy lamb. I think he's got promising to leak monk. You know how I feel about him. They got miles bridges there. Now we'll see what he matures into or what have you. But again, I'm looking at nNcholas tomb, twenty four million this year twenty five point five million next year. And then he got a player option. Giving them twenty seven point, one million dollars. I need more from that brother. I do and listen if I'm Michael Jordan, I'm disgusted by his level of production. Just call it like it is. I need more from him. Played a simple. Give me something. I'm sorry. It at eight. Say ESPN is edited seven to nine three seven seven six. You're listening to the Stephen, a Smith show ESPN radio and ESPN news. Actually, you're looking at the Rams they undefeated and considered university is the best team in football and the Lakers got LeBron now you call up or twenty twenty we go. We go through sports. Yeah. Okay. You step it out on a limb near. Congratulations. Take it easy, bro. Let's go to Tim. You live Stephen. It was upset. Hey, Stephen, a dance mood you put on the other day? I was at four shadow in a. You've been on dancing with the stars in the near future? No, I'll never do that. But go ahead. Well, we'll also, I mean my follow up to the NBA you know, the super teams. I mean, I think it's kinda killing it and it seemed to me like watching football this weekend, the NFL's moving in that direction. It seemed like you know, they wanna New England to win with zero penalties. They want Green Bay to win with that last interception that didn't even get reviewed. I mean, what are you thinking? So what are you? Say? One I'm playing, I mean, how much control do you think the NBA you know, house over the super teams and how much control the NFL. I don't think. I think I think in the NBA even with his coaches players, they will all they will always tell you the teams who should win, do win. So you might have Tom's with questionable calls that take place particularly on somebody's home turf or what have you where you think that the competitive, the competitiveness of a particular game is influenced to some degree. But in the end, the teams was supposed to win, find a way to get it done. And that's just the way it goes. Gotta run preciado the call. Let's go to John real quick. You lava? Stephen. Reviewing the 2019 GM Survey, Calculated Reputation Tanking, Early Durant Murmurs
And welcome back to another episode of open floor. I'm Andrew sharp. And on the other line Bengal what's up man, not too much and you right off the top though. I've got to count them to announcements to make because on the last episode we take a couple of days ago. We did one of the worst promotional jobs, I believe in NBA history, right? Wait. You mean it wasn't a good idea to wait 'til seventy five minutes in to announce that we're doing a preview episode and we want people to Email us, look, waiting seventy five minutes to announce the official NBA season preview episode which will be dropping next Thursday or Friday was a great way for us to test the loyalty of our most die. Heartless. We probably got a hundred emails, so big thanks to everyone who did stick around to the very end of that episode heard when we asked, hey, please send in one question about your favorite team because we're going to try to cover all thirty teams in our season preview episode that's coming up. So kudos to the people who did, but let's do it up front here on the top and not be quite so half hearted about it because that was the other problem. Andrew, I let you promote it, which is always about idea because you know you're a little too cool for school. Scene is out there. You know, you know, half hearted is a great way to describe all of the promotion that I've done on the last like two and a half years of open four episodes. But that's what we have you here for and you're great at it. I will the ad though we have gone some good preview questions. Here are the teams that we are set on. Number one, we've got the Knicks. We've got the kings. We've got Hornets grizzlies Mavericks heat, thunder hawks, nuggets, warriors, Spurs wizard. So we have at least one question for all those teams. And I have to say that group. It was interesting because most of those teams are teams that we never talk about. And so I think people assumed that nobody was going to ask a question about like the Hornets and so we got like three or four Hornets questions, and we got a couple of grizzlies questions. So. So were set on most of those. But if you didn't hear your team named their hit us up, man, I mean, we're going to do thirty teams and ninety minutes. It should be fun. Yeah, hit us up man or woman or woman, whoever man, however, go ahead, hit us up. I know injures reading roll like is a middle school teacher over here, who's who's attending class and who's not. But you're right. We did hear from a lot of very thirsty overlooked fan bases. People who really wanted to get in and that's perfect. And we're doing this season preview as a counterbalance to our sort of shameless Celtics, loving and shameless Lakers following here recently, don't worry guys, we hear you. We know there are thirty teams out there and we're hoping that we can cover all thirty teams in that episode next week. But that was only one of my announcements. Andrew, I've got another second announcement. As you mentioned, you're a little half when it comes to promotion, I tend to be maybe a full heart and an extra half when it comes to promotion. I go a little too far whether we're slanging razor blades or at home meal delivery services or whatever. I get into it. Right? Yeah. And I don't wanna Pat us on the back too much, but when you look at some of the analytics, Andrew, when you look at the listenership and the Twitter followers and all that kind of struck me this week that we're reaching enough people with the open floor globe that we could actually swing a national election at this point. Right. I did you think about that? Like how close did I come out there? Absolately not. No. Okay. Well, I did. If you look back to those sixteen election, there was like three states. Constan. Okay. I see what you mean. But it it was very close now. Obviously the entire open floor globe. Does it live in those specific states, but you get my general point, which is a pretty big platform here. We have an obligation to encourage, I think civic engagement. So if you're above voting age and you're in a state where you can vote registered a vote, the midterms are coming up. We're not going to tell you how vote, obviously, if it was a presidential election, we would probably be campaigning for guys like Yanni who aren't even eligible candidates. But I think it's important that we say that if you're listening here and you haven't registered to vote and you thought about it and you listen to politics podcast, and those guys are kind of like urging you to do it and maybe they're a little bit more annoying that we are your friendly, family members who are egging you on to do your part, be a better member of society, right? Yeah. No, we're the cool guys being voting is cool. So don't even. Stick or even at sixteen hundred guys who cares? But we opened floor globe where encouraging you get out there. Yeah, coming out of left field with that one. I had no idea where you're going when you started. I thought the second announcement was going to be that we are now available for download on radio dot com which are told us to plug. So yes, if you are into radio dot com, you can now find open floor on there and also registered a vote and do your civic duty. We're trying to change the world one radio dot com. Download stream at a time, but look, I just take this. This tagline influence right serious. Let's try to really influence things here. Angeles do it. There we go. Well, listen, Ben would that we should get into the regular podcast here after are meandering intro and self promotion. He said, we could have swung presidential election possible. It's not out of the realm of possible. Sure, absolutely. Listen. So Ben is leaving to go to Michigan for the rest of the week. We're recording this on Wednesday, Ben. I talked to you like twenty four hours ago. Not much news has transpired since the last time we recorded. So I figured to start today, we could just read through some of the two thousand nineteen GM survey which was released by John Shuman an NBA dot com today. And because nothing else has happened, I thought we could just go through some of this to start. I'm willing to go through it, but we're going to put a moratorium on no news happening because you've been complaining about this for like four or five episodes and used to get on me when I mentioned LeBron James junior in the middle of the summer on every granted, I probably went back to that well, about four or five, two. Times their stuff happening here and she okay. It might not be big, glittery free agency stuff that you really get excited about in early July. You can have all your conspiracy theories, but we've got some news and I think this GM survey qualifies. Now granted they play it a little close to the vest. Okay. You won't believe that the thing Golden State's gonna win the title this year. But I actually think the real fun of the GM survey is digging into the stray votes like who actually has enough backbone to go against conventional wisdom and look to be on. It's not like the most backbone, it's anonymous. They're not putting their names on it. They're not really stretching things that far, but the stray votes really get me excited. I've marked few that I wanna talk about, but let's start at the top right with the team, they think is gonna win the title. Yes, the most basic question which team wins the two thousand nineteen MBA finals and I had to say straight votes. I mean eighty seven percent have Golden State. That's twenty six GM's. This is so weird to me that I actually looked up, which how the percentages correlate to numbers and so seven percent of located, right? Not particularly complicated at seven percent have Boston, seven percent have Houston. That means to GM's legitimately believe the rockets are going to go in the title this year and to Geos the Celtics are gonna win, which isn't as crazy to me, but how did you read that? Well, I guess I'm a little surprised that there weren't more gyms willing to go out with some weird votes. Nobody could talk themselves into Philly, just being making a huge leap up and being ready to do it. What about Toronto with Leonard? It seems to me if you're willing at least a few people were willing to go against Golden State, and that obviously involves some injuries scenarios for them or meltdown in the postseason or some sort of help needs to happen for somebody else to win it. I was just a little bit surprised that no-one went outside. The box. There isn't a Utah guy out there. You know, some guy who just really loves defense and it's totally on Rudy Gobert who who wants to get a little wacky and wild with the prediction. I guess. I mean, I understand just playing it by the book because that's how I do it. When I make our predictions for us, I surprise surprise. I'm picking Golden State over Boston and the finals this year. No real real shocking pick there. But if I had anonymity, I think I would come up with something a little bit different and weird just for the sake of being different Ben. Can I tell you something if you really loved Lee Jenkins, you'll be the guy to jump out there on that corner this year and saying the clippers are going to win the two thousand nineteen NBA finals. You can make casing Tobias Harris as the new, the show your love. This is the uric clicks. Let's group behavior engine. Sure. Showing up on a stage running out onto the running out onto the stage interrupting the whole concerts. Try to get a hug and then security tackle you to the ground. That's what that move is. I will not be party to that. No, you know what that is. That's Gulliver on Instagram behavior. Golfer and Britain is a whole different person. So fair enough. Yeah, I don't know. I don't really. I'm not going to be the guy who picks the Celtics to win this year. Come on your head, your Celtics to win this year. We know we all know. It just say you are. I think it's closer this year than it has been either of the last two seasons. And again, I'm not going to be that guy, but it's it's not as crazy as it sounds, I guess. Okay. Here's one way to look at it. Would you pick this year Celtics or last year's rockets, or would you pick this year Celtics? And then we'd have to clone kyri, but then or the two thousand sixteen Cavaliers, right? So like Blake teams would get kyri that isn't good way to look at it. If you look at it that way, I hate to break it to you. I hate to rein in your green beer. I'm taking those other two teams. I'm taking the two thousand sixteen Cavaliers because a little Bron factor taking last year. Rockets because I think that harden would be the best player on the court. And Chris, Paul would have a very good chance of being the second best player on a court in that head to head series that they've got that time together. So if they were playing this season, they would have a year of experience together to me. I would be stunned if Boston could match Houston's regular season resume from last year. And I still think people like you in anti rockets nitpickers are selling them short for what they did in the postseason to they dismantled some really good teams. Well, especially Utah. Minnesota was a little bit shakey in the first round, but to me, I'm still taking that Houston team. What about you. I don't know. The Celtics stuff is getting serious enough like I'm starting to forget whether it's a bit or whether I really believe like, I'm really losing myself. I don't like I don't like what's happening, but I will say the Celtics beat that rockets team twice in the regular season. If I'm not mistaken and both very close Hayward wasn't there, Jason Tatum should be better this year. I mean, there's no way I'm taking that rockets team over the Celtics, a playoff series. You kidding me. But look again, Golden State is pretty much in a class of their own, but the Celtics are going to push them and we can talk more about it as the season goes along. You know, we don't need to get into that one or seeing those medical tests that like they put stuff into your bloodstream that's like colored or it's kind of like a contrast so that when you go through, I guess whatever machine or whatever it would be like it comes back. Back and it just radiates and like a really weird way and they can use that to like, look for defects or whatever part of the body they're looking at. Yeah, I feel like if they did a contrast for you right now, your entire head would just come back screaming, neon. Green, just like in every direction for health? Yeah, they, they would have to call the oldest doctor on staff into, sir. We have never seen anything like this. This guy's entire brain has become completely overwhelmed by some sort of unknown disease that we've never seen before Celtics. Itis. This guy's crazy. Yeah. You wanna pick the Celtics over the warriors. Just say you're going to get there in a week or two. I'm pushing you along, say. I know I don't. I'm not going to say you're not gonna trick me into that, but look, it. I, I will say if we do get to June and Celtics warriors, I'll be so much more excited for that series than I was for the last two versions of Cavs warriors because I think Boston has enough pieces to where they can at least make it interesting, and it's not going to be like LeBron in a doomed feet of Valiants. And I think Boston tactically can do some things which is an upgrade. It'd be acute five game series. It probably it's probably not going more than five or six either way, but that's better than four. So, and we'll get to go to Boston. You know, it's a nice little trip in June. No, perfect. Can't wait speaking of the east. Oh, do you have a top four in the east right now? It's pretty conventional. I think Boston one. Philly in Toronto to threes very close about. I don't know how deep you want me to go into that. I think I'd probably put Philly to Toronto three and then I've got no walkie for. And then from there it's, you know, teams like I dunno, Indiana, I expect them to maybe a little bit worse than they were last season. Yeah. But to me, it's a fourteen conference I harp on this every single year, but I don't really know why we talk about anybody pass the top four in the Houston. Frankly, I don't really know why we talk about anyone to. Yeah, that's fair. I the GM's for the record have Boston one Toronto to Philadelphia, three Milwaukee, four. I would flip it. I have Boston Toronto, Milwaukee, Philadelphia for Washington v. And it's funny because I have been giving interviews like with radio people, and they ask about where where I put the wizards and for most of the last month or two, I've been putting them third in the east and feeling kind of like irresponsible about it, but like that is kind of where I see. There's a part of me that really thinks that's possible for the wizards. And then I stepped back like two weeks ago and thought about it and was like, number one, the wizards are probably not gonna win fifty two games and finished third in the east and number two. It's so sad that my like reckless optimism for the wizards is possibly finishing third in the east as if that is like cool or something that matters even a little bit. Very well said, I'm proud of you not totally buying all of your transition toward Celtics fan, but I do think the like under the radar benefit of this movement for you is clear is in greater perspective, what's happening with your Washington Wizards. So I congratulate you for that. If we're gonna do a shameless plug alert, people should check out the season preview magazine because I did try to just ruin your entire hopes and dreams about the wizards did not. I don't wanna spoil it too much, but I think that there's a chance this season for Washington, not only do they not reach that ceiling that you're talking about? Yeah, that stuff backfires so much in the playoffs that basically front office coach absolutely hot see territory after the season. And then the core I could easily see being broken up next summer. To me, it feels like the clippers from a couple of years ago in the sense that we already know they've been sick of each other for a couple of years. And at some point, just like the truth comes out and it's like, all right, we can't fake it anymore. We've made each other for years. Exactly. For some reason, that's just my gut intuition about this year's wizards. We'll see if it plays out. I look there ceiling, you're not crazy. You're not a blind wizards fan to say that they're sealing his fifty plus winds and atop three seed where their talent level is. But we've also said that for the last three years and they've never really put it together. Yeah, it was more just sort of an Piff any like, wow, so this is it dreaming about the three seed like, okay, so I'm out on most of my wizards optimism, and I feel like v is pre- pretty realistic for them. The Sixers are the one where like you can put them second, and I would buy you could put them fifth and I would buy it. Let me ask you a question on that though. Because I know you're a little bit more skeptical or down on the Sixers than most people. I know you pick the under for them kind of when we were doing the over under chat. What are the major factors that have you concerned or thinking that this isn't going to just be like an ascension, right? Because there is one narrative out there that says, Philly blew away expectations last year, but they really figured things out down the stretch. They're coming back without having to ramp up. They've got all of their main pieces there. They should hit the ground running and be legit jug or not. What has you a little bit more hesitant. I worry that I worry about embiid's health like I think he was. He was pretty healthy last year. I don't think he played like sixty one games sixty plus. But but not seventy, and I don't see him. I just let's knock on wood. I don't know. And then the the biggest thing though is like, I don't see Foltz as a viable like thirty minute game guy, and they need an extra quality rotation piece. They lost Belen Ellie. They lost Ilyasova. They're big off season additions. Were Wilson Chandler who's already hurt an out for the first three weeks with the with a sore hamstring which is like the Wilson Chandler experienced distilled to its essence, and then you've got a Mike Moskalov who's fine. But like I don't know, man if we really going to try to talk ourselves into Mike Moscow LA difference maker for the Sixers, so it's good to be all on Simmons. Yeah, that was a rhetorical question, but it's like. I don't know. I mean, it's it's gonna be all on Simmons and Embiid and it's asking them to do a lot. And I think they probably weren't quite as good as the fifty two wins indicated last year. So I just think everybody should be cautious about projecting a step forward. This might be sort of a lateral year now I kind of hear you. I'm actually kind of it on the Sixers. I think that their main five guys really nicely together, they're very balanced. If those guys enjoy good health, I expect a really, really big season from Philly. Win wise. Yeah. And then also playoff wise. I was really impressed also by their first round performance against Miami. Like in hindsight, it's easy to say, okay, Miami, they're just kind of a scrappy overachiever team media really have a ton of town, but Philly really work them and to do that sort of in your collective first trip to the playoffs together to me, that was impressive. And I think they're going to be pretty good. I would be surprised at all if they're the two seed me. Would I if I, if I had to bet off the top of my head, I would say regress a little bit for them. No. Are here you? And I mean, I think that they also have a chance to be right near the very top in terms of just entertainment value. Yeah, watch ability, whatever you wanna call it, those guys are going to be well, it's consistently great. I was really impressed. They were number one in Zach, Lowe's league pass rankings, and that is my experience with the Sixers. If we go back over the past year, Philly is the one team who I will watch no matter who they're playing. No matter what time the game is. Like if I'm at home, flip it on and see what's happening because they are just fascinating like their nights where they're like Gounon out over people and just towering over people, and they look like the solution to small ball, and then there are nights where like they have no idea what they're doing. And so you get. Like a pretty wide spectrum, but it's all pretty interesting. Hey, one straight thought I've got about Marquel Foltz because it does seem like he might be through the worst of whatever it was. He was going through last year and this actually applies to quite Leonard as well. You know that old like MIT's Sloan conference theory about like don't get stuck in the treadmill of mediocrity to be really good or really bad than right there in the middle. Did we see some player tanking last year, like guys like maybe his head was just a little bit like overwhelmed as rookie and Kawhi. Maybe he started to realize the Spurs weren't going anywhere. Did they either consciously or sub consciously decide to tank their own reputations as hard as possible, thereby setting up the big comeback, right? Like did they basically do one man processes because Kawai gets himself traded and now he's, hey, I'm back. I'm co. I laugh funny. I'm a fun guy. I'm the face of the. North, and here I am ready to be an MVP candidate and because things were so bad last year, he winds up getting way more credit for hitting a couple mid-range jumpers and a preseason game. Then he would have had if he had just stayed in San Antonio and then Foltz I'm seeing these videos, go viral shooting like goofy corner, threes with Ben Simmons, trying to block them and with the tagline this never would have happened last year. It happened two years ago when he was in college. We know this guy could hit a three pointer. It's not some big revelation scoring guard who likes to shoot. I mean, come on to me. I think we've discovered the the newest analytical forefront, Andrew, it's player tanking. And I'm actually curious, are we going to see media tanking is they're going to be a point where you decide to pull the Foltz at some point during the season just run your own podcasting value into the ground set up a big comeback right in time for the playoffs. Are we going to see that maybe? I mean, it's a big risk, big risk for Markelle. Colts tank. His rookie season that way, but maybe it will pay off. I don't think courageous enough. It's one of your worst theories of all time. If you're in Hawaii and you're like, well, this season's going to be okay, not great. Is it better to just run into it? Run into the struggle, make it as bad as possible so that you can open a new leaf is a better narrative. I'm just asking the question. I'm not saying that's what happened. But look, if full is like most improved player and co is the MVP I'm telling you, there's struggles played a big part in that right by the way that in general is one of the best hot takes strategies is to put something out there and say, look, man, I'm not actually arguing anything. I'm just asking questions. I'm just trying to start a discussion. So I learned this from you. Who else would I learned this kind of a strategy from it is giving you all the credit. I'm not, but it is a staple. Here's take sensor. I completely agree with you though. Before we move on the reaction to faults hitting that one jumper. I didn't know that it was only one three that he had hit. And so I saw these people kinda rhapsodised about how great he was at how what, what a night it was for Marquel, which I love because for him to not shoot a three at all in the first preseason game was really not encouraging like freak me out if I were Sixers fan, and then he was one for four from three man. This is I think he took six threes a game when he was at Washington, and I don't know. I just I'm worried about where we're headed with Foltz, but I will say if he can make it back and become like a one hundred percent of the player, he was. It'll be one of the craziest stories in the league this year. So we're rooting for them. Definitely. She and it's. Only one of the craziest stories because he tanked potential. He was played associate was Lonzo last year as a rookie. You would not be saying that just like shockingly bad from you. Sara ES Mr President. What is this? This gusting new podcast, the Oval Office tapes people actually listen to this survey Saint they have secretly recorded tapes from within the lighthouse. They're all fake fudged. I never called home Orosa Kim Kardashian, and I never said Paul Ryan was a funding little. We'd, sir. You just got off the phone with him. I was sitting right here. How are they getting these tapes? Probably Millar or the failing New York Times or Barack Obama. I didn't say that please don't tweet that too late. So is this bad for us or is this like a pro-trump? I guess it's all behind the scenes. Look at what life is really like in your White House crab the Oval Office tapes on apple podcasts or wherever you find your favorite shows. All right. Let's go rapid fire through some of these top four in the west. You have a top four that you're ready to unveil right here. Now, my one St. to Houston, three, Utah, and I'm still kind of figuring out what I wanna do for. I think my hottest take with. Upper limit groups is that Utah may be getting slept on a little bit like I would not be surprised at all if they wound up with one of the top two seeds in the Western Conference. That doesn't mean they're going to make the Western Conference finals, but I think they bring everyone important back. They had unbelievable chemistry. They figured out how they wanna play on office. Their offense should be better because their best score should be better in terms of where he's at in the age curve. They like each other, they have a genuine chemistry and togetherness factor. They play hard, they're disciplined. They're very smart and they should have the best defense in the league a lot to like, and the way one scout put it Jimmy. Last month when we were doing the scouting reports is like everything that made San Antonio good and consistent and steady for years and years and years. Utah's basely incorporated all that Dennis Lindsay is kind of overseeing that same kind of approach, but now they're doing it better than San Antonio doing it right. There are steadier, their defense is more reliable. I think offensively they may not have been as creative as a few. The least in they're still good on offense. Okay. Okay. Struggling to way there are there are there definitely struggling? Well, it's not pretty because they play slow, but they've got multiple quality playmakers. You love Ingles start there, but and you love their small lineup. So let's not overlook that either. I think that they have a real shot at a top two seed if either Houston or Golden State decides to fall back into fourth gear. And I could see either one of those teams doing that this season, it wouldn't shock me if if Utah was the beneficiary there. Okay. Well, the GM's went Golden State one Houston to Oklahoma City with the three seed jazz for Lakers. Five. I'm surprised that more GM's didn't take this opportunity to fire off some potshots at this Lakers experiment of granted. It's split pretty evenly between Portland and San Antonio. And Denver didn't get any love here. I think Denver could be fifth or six to Denver could fourth. Yeah, they really couldn't. And their ceiling could be third. I mean, if you runs into some health issues like they've had in the past, I think Denver has a chance to be really good this season curious. Do you think GM's are actually answering this themselves? No. Come on. What for a couple of guys out there that are like basketball nerds doing it and like they look for to it every year and they're probably sort of like we are doing the top one hundred process where they're like, looking back on what they got, right and wrong, trying to calibrate how they can have the best picks. And I think there's a lot of other guys like rob Pelinka when he's driving his tesla, hands-free tests, I'm not sure he's agonized. Every single one thinking is like, you know, I would bet everything I own that Pat Riley gets his Email and forwards it to video coordinator and has them do it. But it's interesting nonetheless, the final thought their, I'm with you on the jazz love to a degree. I'm not going to get carried away and pick them second in the west. The other team that I'm really starting to warm up to is your San Antonio Spurs and I don't even know. Album. The Rosen is in there, but let me tell you every single disease, Murray jumper story. I am consuming. I'm here for all your gianatti Murray buzz in early October, and I believe I think this is going to be a big year for me and one of my favorite pet projects around the league. Okay. So Sixers fans when he just got done mocking you about Marquel full too. Just do the ad libs version change Sixers to Spurs change full. It's Murray, one hundred percent in consistency. I tell you something. I didn't want to do this in the fold segment. Okay. But I was thinking about it earlier today and everything that Sixers fans are saying about Markelle Foltz is actually true about John Murray and chip England. So to respect at your handling and Foltz I believe in Dijon say and what he's going to do in San Antonio this year only because they're like a handful of smart people who are who have actually watched him working out and said like it's pretty real and the Spurs are not the type of team to kind of bullshit about that. So I don't know. I think this are going to be a problem. And of that second tier, they're the team. I trust most. Well, I want to believe with you too. I'm not sure I'm all the way there, but I just nervous in the back of my head. I see you sitting on stage at the next live rights Ricky Sanchez podcast next year with them like beaming up a graphic of Murray's three point percentage, three point percentage try to explain to you why you're wrong and just read for you, but I'm glad that you're ready to double down, triple down, quadruple down, go for it. I would love to be wrong about the false thing because no one like it's not going to haunt Dijon Murray if he never gets jumper, but it will kind of stick with Foltz. So I'll gladly take the loss on this one. If it means false gets back to what he was, but I'm with you, hey, why are the GM so high on Oklahoma City. I don't know that has been an issue for the last four years with everybody kind of talking themselves into the thunder, despite obvious structural deficiencies. And I guess this is just what we do now. It is what it is, but moving on to the GM MVP. So LeBron has thirty percent Durant has twenty seven percent. Do you have any thoughts here? I really think Jaanus is going to win MVP and I just. LeBron the, the closer we get here, the more skeptical I am of what the Lakers are actually going to be the GM's order. Fram VP was actually really interesting to me because they went LeBron one Katie to Davis, three hard and four, and then they had others receiving votes. Presumably one vote a piece for Yana staff kyri Colli Westbrook. First of all, the low for Katie. I liked to see it and I was actually going to ask you, is there any chance that Katy or Steph winds up winning MVP of Golden State is like easily the league's best team, this season. One of those guys have an MVP pushing them or they just not even going to try because it seemed like they almost ranked this as who they thought their top five players were as opposed to who they thought would win the MVP because. I always defend Katie, but I do think it's kind of difficult to manufacture his MVP case. Right? Like what is what's the narrative for him this season that's different from past seasons where he really struggled to even get much attention in that race. I mean, obviously he's going to be incredible on the core, but we know MVP voting tends to kind of go pass that. Yeah, and I also thought it was interesting that the Eastern Conference wasn't really that well represented. It seemed like the GM's were just ready to say all the best players play in the west. Yeah. I mean. I actually as far as the Katie thing, I don't think it's as crazy as you do and it's actually because of something that you said on the podcast, we did like a month ago. We've been talking about all this stuff far too long, but. You mentioned, there's a pretty plausible scenario where Golden State wins sixty eight sixty nine seventy games and they are just so much better than everybody else that it would be almost uncomfortable to give the MVP to like Anthony Davis with one wins. I think that's realistic for both Durant and curry. And I, I like the the idea that DeMarcus cousins is going to kind of revitalize them and keep them in gauged in a way that they weren't last year. So I'm not as quick to write off Durant, and I also think curry belongs right next to him. I mean, it's a tossup between those two, and it basically comes down to like who is more outrageous on a nightly basis, which again can go either way. Yeah, and that's what I'm saying. Like for Jaanus and Steph to each only get one vote that could look really funny season. Okay, one out of thirty good job case for Jaanus is basically the same as as the case for Anthony Davis. I like both of them are going to be out of this world every night. I don't know if Anthony Davis is going to have quite enough wins to really kinda round out his case. Whereas Jaanus is going to be in the east. He's coming off some. What did you call a player? Tanking. The bucks were reputation tanking. Last year, I think there's were coach tanking. They were definitely coach tanking, and there's room for them to kind of leap forward in a way that's going to underscore how incredible Janas. And so I like his chances, but it doesn't surprise me that a bunch of interns slash like sixty something GM's don't really care about Yoenis. Now, were you outraged that Gordon Hayward didn't get a single. On the also receiving votes list. I don't know. I've completely lost myself if you were starting a franchise today and could sign any player in the NBA, who would it be? So they have Jaanus at at the top of this list with thirty percent of GM's choosing him. One thing I enjoyed is, is. John Shuman includes last year's winner for each question and last year current, Karl Anthony towns. Got twenty nine percent of the vote here and now he's completely off the list. Did you have any reaction to all this? Well with Janas being at one over Anthony Davis, and then there was another question that was like, who's going to have a breakout season top two candidates joe-marie and Brandon Ingram? Yeah, I started to wonder, did this? Yeah. In fluids these these voters because I think he Davis at this point, isn't he clear one for this category? If you're in terms of starting a franchise? Like if you have the next six years? Seven years, eight years, nine years of Anthony Davis. Don't you take? I love Janas more than basically anyone in the world. Yeah, but I still think Anthony Davis is the right answer to that question. I don't know, man, because I think if you and I were were answering this question, we spent forty five. Minutes to bathing it on a podcast. I think you have to then factor in Anthony Davis, just signed with clutch and like wants to go win a title. And if you're starting out, if you're just starting a franchise today, the odds that Anthony Davis wants to be there much longer at this point is are pretty low, correct. I mean that should that factor into this at all, or am I over thinking it. I think you're going to little too far into the hypothetical here, like you're, you're saying that Dave is trade demands half to come along with Anthony Davis, starting your mythical franchise. I am not. Okay. Well, all right. And by the way, I feel the same way with Steph where it's like if I were starting to team to try and win a title this year, I would take Steph no-brainer. But if I'm started franchise like sketchy injury history there, I don't know how I feel about banning the next five years on Steph, curry and Durant getting older too. So anyways, that would be the case for Jaanus over Anthony Davis. That's all I'm saying. Well, the people who are saying they're going to start a franchise with thirty four year old. LeBron that is remarkable head is that is real dedication to short term thinking. Those people are just like looked global warming skidding out of control. We might not be here in five years. We gotta live right. Live for the moment. And yeah, that's another thing that like the closer we get to this season kind of doing a double, take the Lakers and some of the guys they signed this summer which had to have been signed off on by LeBron like, I don't know if you want to just like hand over the keys to the kingdom for what like, what are you going to really get two or three years from now with LeBron, but I could be wrong one note on Janas by the way from Matt Moore at HP basketball, he says, I would like to confirm reports from early this off-season Jaanus intended combo is indeed jacked at this point. He's added so much muscle. He's basically built like a monster. I just want to say and Matt is in Milwaukee reporting on that. I am a little worried about how much muscle he added because I feel like there's a point of diminishing returns with like balking up where you start to. It starts to affect like your fluidity, and that would be one kind of very minor concern going into this book season. Yeah. I mean, you also run the risk of breaking backboards. I mean when you get Ripa rim straight off of the hinges and just shatter backboard and you make the entire gym, like wait an hour and a half for the cleanup process. Take place. You have to play the second game trying not to step on the little glass shards. Oh my God. I got a cut on my foot because the honest broker backboard. Yeah, it's it's really unfortunate, definitely a diminishing return down. I I understand what you're thinking, but I also wonder if maybe for once you're in the realm of conventional thinking here because we really have seen someone try to push this boundary as far as honest as pushing it. Yeah, it's worked for him so far like everything that he's done in terms of his body has paid off with encore results. I would love to see him come back with a real jumper rather than an extra fifteen pounds of muscle. But if it's fifteen pounds of muzzle or no muscle, I'll take the muscle. I will be this appointed now officially. If the bucks don't win fifty games and if you honest doesn't break backboard. That's your challenge on us this year break backboard supposedly unbreakable. They've changed the technology and all of that pufus wrong. Yeah. Well, I don't know my my worry. You're probably right. My worry is informed by two things. Number one, when I was in high school, I had a friend who played football and he wants summer gained like forty, five pounds of bustle to where I was looking at and like you realize you're going to be much slower. Now that doesn't really help that much. And then he ended up being hurt every two weeks pulled groin or pulled hamstring or whatever. And then the other thing I grew up in DC you probably don't know who this is, but like Laurent Landry came into the NFL as a really good safety and then just kind of like lost his mind, lifting weights. And so anytime I see an athlete get like super Jack. There was that picture of Janas over the summer, Laurent Landry alarm bells go off in my brain and I'm just like, this is not a good thing. Please calm down. Stop taking all that protein, but yacht fun. The last time I checked yawn this is a six foot eleven point forward all NBA player. He's not some like five foot eight shifty offense of lineman with out of both cheeks. There might be a little difference between Jaanus and your home from your high school. Football. Okay. Do classify different classic. Nothing would be more heartbreaking than Yoenis becoming addicted to weightlifting and turning into the NBA's LeBron Landry or David Boston or whatever. He's not going to turn into high school buddy, but. Anyways, this is winning MVP this year who's the most underrated player acquisition. The GM's had tyreek Evans with thirteen percent derozen ten percent. Trevor Reza. This is a Christian. I don't really have an answer here. Do you. I liked it. They gave Dennis shooter a little bit of love and Oklahoma City. I'm getting pretty close to ready to pick him as six man of the year in large part because of again, kind of team y. tanking. Whenever Westbrook was off the court, they were basically on watchable and that's been going on for two straight years now and arguably longer. But at least it was a little bit more masked during the Katie era. I think shooter was below average starting point guard. I think he's going to be clearly above average backup. I think he's going to be in perfect position to kind of make his biggest offense of impact because they're so short on just creators in that second unit. And I also think he's going to get a lot of minutes in closing lineups alongside Westbrook where even though he's not the best shooter, he just gives you a secondary playmaker to do stuff and to be there in big moments. And I think he's got a chance to really make an impact on their like just inconsistencies that they've had in the past, but then also on their win loss record too. If does. Jump hold on. If Oklahoma City jumps up to that four spot where the GM's think shooter will be a big reason why. Okay. Can I ask you though? Don't you feel a little uncomfortable trusting Dennis shooter to do anything positive. Yeah, he's not my favorite player. I would not invest particularly jersey. He's not a Gulliver all-star. No, not at all. But look, we're saying you have a pretty narrow roll. All you have to do is be better than their atrocious backup point guards for the last five years is very similar logic to what I've tried to talk to you about with Austin rivers on the wizards bench. And we've run through all the ridiculous backup guards that Washington's had. I mean, I'm sure you remember like the main her experience, right? Yeah. Well, guess what? Eric Maynard experience actually started in Oklahoma City. They launched the Eric meaner experience and suffered through that. They've had all sorts of just really rough point guards last year. Felton was in that role. I mean, there was a time where that worked okay for them, but shooters a lot better than Felton at this point, I believe intruder and it does even me though, feels strange to be optimistic about shirt or after how awful. Last couple seasons were in Atlanta. I mean, those hawks teammates really seem to hang him. There's a theme here. What did I say earlier player tanking, right. Did that happen? I mean, was there a little Dennis shooter player tanking? Make sure you get out of town so you don't have to be stuck in Atlanta. Seems pretty plausible. Gonna let you continue to beat this drum for the rest of this episode and then please never bring up player, tanking. Do your worst while we're year. What I think that was clearly a poor fit in terms of what they were trying to cast him as, hey, you're now the lead guy of the super young up and coming team, right? Green in basketball games like that was never going to work right, and I don't really blame him all that much for it. I think he was affected at times when he was in a more narrow role in Atlanta when he was surrounded by better players. Think his role this year in Oklahoma City will be more similar to where it was earlier in his crew in Atlanta where he was pushing a guy like Teague for starters minutes, right? And teases solid starting point guard, nothing spectacular. And I think shooters kind of in that same class where if you have measure backup, you like him? Yeah, I agree with what you're saying. I think a skeptic would say that it wasn't necessarily just Lanta that was trying to cast Schreuder in that lead guard superstars role. Sure. Himself was leaning into that for a while, but I look, I believe that he has is actually going to be kind of a difference maker for them. And he's one of the reasons I'm not totally down on the thunder this year. I just know that I've mentioned that to a couple smart basketball people over the last few months and like generally I get laughed at, and so I'm happy though that you're on on this island with me and we'll see where it goes. It may actually work. Yeah, I'm just glad he's not on quote, unquote might team. This is the kind of thing where you definitely run the other way distance yourself from. It doesn't go according to script, but I think there's a chance that it could. I mean, some of the other names on this list like Isaiah Thomas. A few of the others. Avery Bradley, which was a weird one because they didn't even acquire during the summer. Like I don't understand it all like the rationale there. I can at least see the rationale for having shooter on this list. Another name that I liked a lot actually was Julius Randle because we talk so much about who the Lakers got other than who they lost and I two preseason games. I'm already convinced they would love to have Randall on this roster. He would play so many minutes for this group because they've got this big hole in the middle. And I think the fits going to be pretty nice there in New Orleans and he probably just didn't get that much discussion because his contract size wasn't that big, but it was for once the pelicans drastically overpay someone's kudos to them. I think that one would would make my list if I had to answer this question, I'm really curious to see how it works with Randal. That's one where I just don't really understand why New Orleans would have the season. They had last year where they really seem like they unlocked something special with AD at the five miratec at the four spacing the floor and just kind of malling teams. I'm not sure why you would go through that and then turn around and say, you know what we need. We need another big who's going to replicate a lot of what DeMarcus cousins gave us that just struck me as off at the time and maybe it will work, but I'm in wait-and-see mode with them. Yeah, I feel you. What are these questions? Are you? Are you interested in? All right, two more questions, which rookie will be the best player in five years. Keep in mind the GM's picked Luca Donncha overwhelmingly as the rookie of the year favorite got forty, three percent of the vote. I think the next closest seventeen percent, but as far as best player in five years, de'andre Aiden, guts, twenty-seven percent, Jared Jackson, got twenty seven percent Luca Danni got seventeen percent Bagley and Kevin Knox got thirteen percent apiece. And and Wendell Carter got three percent, which seems low means he got one vote. Do you have any takes? Basically the reason I'm including this is because I want to know whether you saw de'andre, Aiden, go off the other night for twenty four and ten three blocks. You're not even going to mention who he was playing. He was. He was playing the kings, but they're an NBA basketball team which is an over the Beijing ducks are they? Are they an NBA basketball team? I think your point about Luke being viewed as the impact maker from the jump and maybe not the highest ceiling guys. Interesting. I really liked there's so many believers Jaren Jackson, junior, yeah. I mean, I think I would have been really close here between Jaren Jackson and Luca in terms of who I would have said to answer this question. I mean, I gush about him for what weeks at summer league. And he profiles just like an unbelievably high ceiling type player. You know, big impact maker on both sides and so young, incredible body already like to me, he's an excellent answer to this question. I also liked that last. Top picks. That go my heart just saying, because somehow I missed that the first time and I just collapsed it. And it was like, yeah, because I was really getting ready to to give you some shit after like four months of harassment around eight, and but I don't know. We'll wait and see. I think Aiden is going to have a much better trajectory, Josh Jackson as a future star of the Suns franchise will say that I'm with you on one other eight and related note. I don't know if you saw the next question which was which rookie is the biggest steal given where he was selected in the draft. And people said like shea fee when del Carter obvious choices. You know, somebody said, said Donncha which I think is pretty obvious answer. Somebody voted de'andre eight and they gave you Andrea eight and a vote for steel draft at number one. So either de'andre mom is a. Somehow Ryan mcdonagh found a way to vote for his own guys or maybe. Do you think it's Danny Ainge laying the groundwork trying to coax Ryan mcdonagh into believing in sort of like this. So that he can somehow peel away a bridges or Josh Jackson and trade for Terry Rozier like come on Bryan, you gotta steal, man. You got the steel the draft at number one. How often does that happen? Why do you trade for my backup point guard definitely worth overpaying. You're ready to win right now. Somebody out there has a plan to explain this Andrea vote, and I wanna know who it is. Okay. Flip side to that discussion though. I do think you could make a good case for de'andre eight and being the most underrated rookie in this draft class. Do you agree with any of that? It's possible just because he has been nitpicked ripped apart thoroughly by the online intelligence, the the nerd Iraqi or whatever you wanna call. That's how I feel. And I have to fight back the temptation. Like you've made eight and my guy, he was never really Mike guy. I went to profile him. We had a. I'm not like a diehard eight and believer. But idea. It did amuse me to see how many draft experts like came out peacocking the week of the draft like de'andre Aiden is eighth on my board like he's fine. But I, I don't know how you play him. There was a lot of that shit where it's like, okay, calm down, find dodge more, but you don't have to act like eight and isn't also an elite prospect, and I think he's going to put up really good numbers in Phoenix this year. The question with him is going to be how much to contribute to actual contending, but he'll be good this season. I'm not sure that's a question this year. They're not content. Well, no, I mean is like four or five years from now. We'll probably be having some good debates about what de'andre Aiden actually does for a contender, but he'll look awesome for the next couple of months on a thirty, five win sons team to boil down. He's on the Devon Booker tracks. Josh Jackson, right, actually. Perfect. Who is the best head coach in the NBA? I included this one simply because finally, Brad Stevens is getting some love at long last forty, seven percent of GM's which is actually higher than most winners of all these questions. Forty, seven percent of the GM's in the NBA think he's the best coach in basketball. Yeah. I mean, he's he's Quin Snyder with the propaganda apparatus. That's become popular to say. But I mean, I don't know. I quit Snyder's fine. I wouldn't speaking on behalf of the propaganda apparatus. You have a counterpoint. I think Brad Stevens has done more with less. Actually. There are a lot of people who would say, Brad Stevens has done fairly well with a team that is full of top ten picks and has been really well positioned to go like, make make playoff runs every year. And I think that's, that's certainly one way to look at it, but let's not kid ourselves about what's is Marcus smart, really like a top ten pick in terms of production. I'm not sure, but Stevens kind of gets the most out of mangoes, all jokes aside. He would've won coach of the year last year if Kyrie didn't get hurt. He's almost definitely gonna win coach of the year. This year. Really looney would have to happen. For him not to win it in terms of his toolbox, whether it's played Zayn, lineup management, getting the most out of his guys. Like you mentioned. Establishing a culture. I mean, basically everything you want to coach do communicating clearly standing up for his players in public. I mean, he just checks every single box. So there's, I mean. I mean, if there are people who are serious about pigging Stephen still they're not. He deserves the credit. I don't know if I would have them overpop- or Kerr, but he is in this conversation and I was surprised how many people did put him over both those guys. This season. I mean, that's awful lot of respect from people who are in the general being his peers. And I think it probably is a byproduct of that playoff run and him actually winning something because I think that was sort of the biggest, not for a while as Brad Stevens hasn't actually had that much success. But last last season's playoff run was pretty impressive with that. It's time to move on. We can do a couple of minutes on Durant. We could touch on the king's real quick, but thank you to John Shuman who puts together this survey every year at it's always fun to it's great preseason reading. So go read the full list. NBA dot com. Honestly guy there are like fifty questions. All pretty interesting, but moving on, I wanted to touch on the little buzz that's beginning to percolate on the internet, your friend, our friend, Chris Haines said yesterday, I think he was on undisputed. He said the New York Knicks have a very good shot at Loring k. d. away from the bay area, the allure that the Lakers had for LeBron the building, the culture. That's the same way. Katie feels about the Knicks. Have you been hearing some of this too? Well, first of all, I wanna give Christine's credit for two things. I knew job at Yahoo, sports relations to Chris making a big, move himself. Second, another big move followed me on Instagram last night because I saw him at the Lakers game. So congrats, Chris Haines over joining the movement, but. A lot of people. His true follower list. I think a lot of people want this to happen. I think a lot of people are trying to wish this into reality. I hope Katie doesn't get bullied into it. We know that he is a very. So when you can get into his ear, coach him and steer him different places. I'm still not convinced that the Golden State move was fully his decision. I think maybe by the end of it, he was swayed by their pitch to him and the allure of being able to finally get a title really the way the way he presented himself all the way in the run-up through that postseason what he told to Lee Jenkins when they were in Oklahoma City about how you know building this skyline and turning Oklahoma City. I mean, he really did a quick one eighty there, and I think that gets glossed over a little bit in the retelling. So with Katie, I guess, point blank. I would say everything's always on the table. He's clearly wanted it that way by taking these very short term contracts going year by year and kind of reassessing. But I would still say the odds are way better than even that he stays in Golden State next year. Okay. That's pretty interesting. Because that isn't what I've heard as far as going to Golden State. Initially, what I will be curious about for many years until we find out one way or another. I have some sketchy conversation where I find out like I would love to know what role Nike played because man, it was convenient for them to just slide Durant in next to Steph and have him kind of overshadow Steph for the last couple of years. It worked at the time. Remember we were like, oh, they're going to stop underarms buzz. And I think some of us kind of laughed and like, well, it's still just underarm or whatever. But I mean, do you hear nearly as much about under armor today as you did to us all? And it wasn't just under armor at the time under over was really had a lot of positive momentum after that. That big Steph season the seventy three win year. And a lot of that has been zapped, so, okay, we'll stop beating around the Bush. What have you heard about Katie? Leaving golden still all summer long here. People reference Durant to the Knicks as a real possibility. And I had a conversation last week where it was like. It was somebody somebody I trust was talking about Durant to the Knicks as if it were sort of a foregone conclusion, and I pushed back a little bit to be like, look, anything can happen. It really does sound like a little bit of a LeBron Laker situation where like there have been conversations already and a who knows where it'll turn into, but it's like, this isn't a different category than kyri or Ving and Jimmy Butler conspiracy theories. This is the wheels are in motion to some degree or to an unknown degree. Okay. So make the case, what do the Knicks offer. That's part of what I was pushing back against was like, man, you know, this would not be the greatest decision for Durant, but. Give him. They would give them a clean slate on the reputation, right? Because he would it be the front runner. They would give him an opportunity to be the best player in the Eastern Conference to lead his own team again without any other conversation about, is it steps team? Katie's team would give them a huge market. It would give him greater. I would argue probably greater off court opportunities than even the bay just because he would be sort of the single it would be a huge, huge deal. And that's I'm sure part of it, and I think Durant has always liked and respected porzingus. We'll have to have another separate conversation about porzingas at some point because I think there are more question marks there than we have acknowledged collectively as a basketball community will look like. We've just really poked a lot of holes in this Lakers Russia that LeBron join Katy went to New York without another star. And he's sitting there waiting on porzingas to come back from the the injury. And then he is like hoping that guys like Knox Neil Akina are going to be his supporting cast. That would be so risky Katie. Well, come on do that Katy. That's why I can kind of believe it because Durant has been getting bad advice for a while. And perhaps this is kind of a continuation of that story. I don't know. The the other thing is is the Knicks could potentially clear more space if they can find somebody to take Tim Hardaway junior Courtney Lee, and then amnesty joke, him, Noah. That's the work they have cut out for them that the Lakers were able to do. And I don't know the Lakers we were able to do that because they attached de ngelo Russell Tamaz gov, and they got very aggressive. And so like if you're the Knicks, do you do that with Neil Akina? I've, I would maybe do. I'm not a huge French Frank believer, but maybe they are. But it does. It opens up kind of a whole different box of questions and more than anything. I mentioned this because I think a lot of people have been hearing about Katie to the Knicks and I'm really curious to see kind of how mainstream this gets like during the season. People need someone to talk about what the warriors. So it's an obvious story line, especially because you know, Katie will just say weird things every time he's asked about it. Yeah, he's not going to be on that like discipline script like LeBron so you can kind of milk it for everything it's worth. But what I'm actually picturing right now is Jim Dolan in his office and he's not like scouring through Katie game tape to like, see how Durant could fit and how they could try to like do a very carefully presented recruiting Pige. I'm seeing Jim Dolan look at katie's like really infantile, trash, talk to people on Twitter where he was like, oh, shut the bleep up punk, your nudie at you couldn't guard. Me always does that. And I'm seeing Jim Dolan just like is lighting. Hugh. We got to get this guy. He is what the Knicks are about. We've gotta side him immediately. This is our guy that's true. Look. It's certainly possible that Dolan is not an impediment, but is the ultimate selling point for Durant pettiest of the petty. If you want to have a line between ownership and franchise player, here's the two guys too thin skinned people on the planet. No, for real though I do love Kevin Durant, and I hope that I think at this point it may be better. You're probably right. It may be better for him to just stay in Golden State, and it is fifty fifty at best that he leaves, but it's going to be something that's there all year long. So that I mean, Kevin, I think we should just say this very, very clearly dramatically. Drum roll, please Kevin, don't do it. Just do not do this whatever advice. You're kidding. People are planning these season your year probably involves a YouTube channel or some other weird promotional. Work that you've tried to do here over the last couple of years that has it totally gained traction. Look back on everything that's happened in terms of some of the advice you've received and ask yourself whether that's been the best advice and whether you want to continue going down that route in the future. Yes, stick with Golden State. You're in a great place rack up the finals. MVP trophies rack up the titles. Put yourself above bird on the all-time small forward list. You know, get a few nice big time jumpers overlook a first round series and just realize how good you've got it brand new building there in the bay area. Don't throw that all away to try to be the savior of this sad sack Knicks franchise. Okay. Life coach. Can I talk to basketball fan golfer? Can you at least acknowledge that if he went somewhere else next summer, it would make the whole league a lot more interesting injured, yes. Every time a big star changes teams. It's a big. We understand how this works and it's happening. Every summer now, ten years ago, Andrew. It's not like ten years ago where we had to wait three or four years for a big player to ever do this every summer. Now somebody big changes teams, Jimmy Butler decided to change teams during the middle of training camp, and he didn't even tell the team that he was going to do it. This is a regular phenomenon. Now, there's always going to be excitement. Of course. I know you want to break up the warriors because you're still upset about two thousand sixteen and you're never going to get past that July. Fourth, just funded for life. There's lots of different guys who could change to make things interesting. I don't think eighty should do it. The only scenario where he should go to New York is if he's got a nother top ten guy going there with them so that they can be sort of immediate contenders right off the bat. None of this like buying time because he's not in the same stage as LeBron is right now, we're like, I mean, let's be honest LeBron's best winning days are almost certainly behind him, right Kev is not in that position. He just turned thirty. He should be capable of being the focal point of a championship team for the next three, four, five years, right. And to quote unquote waste that time with a team like the Knicks that's in a transition and trying to find other pieces around him to me would be very poor decision. It would be and look the biggest reason to not believe any of this is that nothing good ever happens to the Knicks it nothing would be more Knicks than them trying to pull off the Lakers blueprint. And striking out completely next summer, so bet on that. Everyone. But I have one addendum to what I just my life coach advice to Kevin Kevin, if you were actually offended by Bob. Myers is terrible joke on the stage. No, runaway if because look, that was a completely ridiculous joke. And that's the kind of thing where I should chase you. Okay. Just to reset the member, Bob, Myers was joking about how like Kevin wasn't really in the same like parts. He hasn't been there as long as staff and like there was this big laugh, but okay, wins the new guy when he had just won the finals MVP to me, that was the moment of all of the treatment of Kevin Durant. That was the absolute worst because it shouldn't have been friendly. What it should have been thankful and gracious. And so look, if you were rub wrong by that moment and you can't get over it by all means, join any team, joined the magic, just go, go, do a spite signing, join the gang. Pulling the end of this. Last year. A lot of the talk around that team was like, he didn't necessarily feel part of the group and he was in his own world. I just let's be real here. That's how you become part of the group friends bus each other's balls at give each other crap. And it's just like how it works at to be able to take joke is how you kind of like endear yourself to everybody and for respect. A guy who's weird. I've come on Katie. Maybe especially like if I were Bob Myers and I spent the last four months watching the greatest basketball team ever assembled potentially come undone because Durant with Khanna in a weird zone, a couple months. They're like, I would definitely needle in a little bit and be like, yeah, I forget what he said, but I would. I would. Here's what he said. Bob Swisher. Bob Swisher came in and said, last year, you told stuff you could have whatever contract he wanted it. You just said that about Katie as well. And Bob Myers says, well, that was different steps been here since the way before days he's earned it basically saying that Katy had earned earned. What any sort of negotiating Katie can have whatever contract he wants. It shouldn't be a joke. He should be there, frankly, on his hands and knees, bowing to Kevin Durant after that files performance. And I'm just saying if he really did take offense to that, if it's not just that he was able to kind of get over, then he should leave. You should go anywhere, and it should be as crazy as he wants. All right. Well, there you go. There's your, there's your life coaching for the for the podcast. Let's do quick podium and then bounce. So I from Sean, he says, I was glad to hear Ben callout, Andrew and his pronunciation of sycophant. My dad always pronounces that psycho fynt at drives me nuts. I've corrected him at least a dozen times that said, sycophant isn't a word. You hear spoken out loud every day, but subsequent is, and it's definitely pronounced with an sound until today. I have never heard a human pronounce that word the way Ben did. I think you said I was trying to remember earlier was it says sequent? Yeah. So a lot of people finally came to your defense and said, you got one right? I was in the moment. I didn't realize I had said anything incorrectly, and I don't believe you've ever corrected me accurately in the entire history of this podcast previously. So I was just naturally defensive because I was like, wait a. Wait. This guy's always rock. There's no way I made a mistake here, but you were correct. I said that word incorrectly. It was what a coincidence that we both had three syllable words starting with an ending with t- that we managed to buy because you went, I I think you might have planted the incorrect pronunciation seed in my brain for later it's possible. Well, again, it's traumatic territory for me. I've told the story before, but when I was in ninth grade, I had to get up in front of a class of fifty people. I was reading and I read the word placebo as place, Bo and was laughed at by the entire class. And it was a really dark memory. And I've been reliving that over and over again as we record this podcast every week twice-weekly. Sorry, because I get so much to light out of it when you do it, but the shoe was on the other foot around. And I understand how hard that is heard from a lot of people. I got phone calls about that. Not even text messages. Not even not even emails to open floor male, edgy dot com. I got phone calls about psycho and look. It was the opposite of our preview show promotions. I had psycho Finn in the first minute of the podcast. So anyone who listened to open floor by mistake like tuned in it was like, oh my God. Are you kidding me? So it goes, I appreciate Sean for calling out. The fact that Cecik went is worse and less defensible than mispronouncing sycophant. I might even take a half loss on this. Okay. Can you do me a favor though? We got a great Email from Josh and instead of clowning you and maybe he felt sad because he knew you were going to get a lot of people making fun of your mispronunciation. Josh came through with a very kind letter directed towards you. And you know, you have a tendency to skip over the ones that are actually complementary of you. You have this very weird masochistic tendency of reading the trash talking about you. So I know it's a little weird to read an Email where guys praising you, but can you please rejoins. Yeah. Okay. I also want to add Marcus is a teacher who listens to open floor, and he said, I made sure all my tenth graders could pronounce both subsequent and sycophant today. So shadow to Marcus open floor in the classroom, everybody get out and vote. We're just trying to change. Get out of. Definitely not eligible to vote. Make sure they'll vote more. Yes, do that. All right. So Josh says it wasn't particularly complimentary of me which is talking more about the triangle area, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh. I really enjoyed this. He says, come on now. He started the Email off by saying, big, thanks to Angie his views on the triangle. Okay, we're only so fake humble out here. Crash continues and says, growing up around here. I have always felt that we are under represented when it comes to basketball preciado, whether it's UNC, Duke NC state the Lakers are Celtics or even high school basketball with the famed winter classic, which is now called the John wall Invitatinal. I can guarantee you that almost every person in this area knows and cares about basketball in some variation to help explain to Ben how far that relationship really goes. I can remember in primary. Middle school and high school. I was watching college basketball in class every single year. It's a right of passage. The ACC tournament and NCA tournament would both be broadcast into every teaching institution in the area side. Note a rite of passage for me was skipping school on the first and second day of every tournament. Like after I turned thirteen and it's so much cooler that they got to watch it in their classrooms. That's amazing. And he continues tell your teachers, your vasectomy every single. Because that's the new thing. All these podcasts advertise with like, hey, if you wanna watch the first day of the tournament, go get to me. Get to me. What gassed you're listening to. But I look forward to one day reading the sect ame- ads on here. It's coming, Josh says, Nell, have a college graduate working in Raleigh, and I can say it's the same after graduation. Last March. All the TV's in my office were tuned turned on so that everyone could watch Duke and North Carolina battle it out. This is a part of our culture. It's part of living in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. I can remember in eighth grade, my school bus would take me to my brother's high school, and we would go walk a quarter mile to nearby word of God academy to see a young John wall destroy whoever he was playing that day. I can remember seeing the absurdly long lines at Crabtree mall just to get a picture with Tyler hands, borough. Thank you. Ed drew for really doing Justice to the absolute love. People here have for basketball. The only thing missing is the MBA. We have a lead highschool teams, elite college teams, and now we need the NBA franchise. We deserve. So. Rate. It really was the only other thing missing besides the NBA for Raleigh was obviously you documenting any of this on Instagram scores, but this is what I'm talking about. I love the passion that came through with that Email, these great personalized stories. That was, yeah, in general, I love being down there because again, like when you walk into the dean dome, you can absolutely feel how much they love basketball and I plan on trying to get to Cameron indoor for an actual game this this year also.
