Anti-Racist Science Education
"All right today in the show. We're unsmiling what's not working in science education around representation and racism and how to teach science in a more inclusive way and idea from listener and scientists esther kunle yes so thanks to esther. We went looking for k. Through twelve teachers teaching at the intersection of science and racial justice at all grade levels. And i want to start with. Let me see a fears. She's a post doctoral fellow in the collaborative for stem education. And outreach vanderbilt okay. She's a black scientist. Helping out in science classrooms in tennessee. Among fifth graders at this one particular school she is a total rockstar to walk into a classroom. And they'll be like dr. Yeah it's me. It's me everyone you know know autographs thing. We lit up each others world. Our saying that let me see a drops into fifth seventh and eighth. Grade science classrooms like a real life. Miss frizzle okay. I'm not kidding. You she wheels the cart between classes clattering with beakers and different very interesting looking chemicals and students. They're so intrigued. They run up to her on our like number my wife just all that stuff and then when she's in the classroom let me see a doesn't just help them run experiments. She'll also delve into the ethics of designing an experiment. Okay she'll talk about how wrong. The tuskegee study was which is win. Scientists studied syphilis in black men and withheld treatment. Sushi's like introducing bioethics to kids as important part of the curriculum. Yup scientists are presented as very human herself included and her students can totally handle these conversations. We see what's happening with this generation with them protests. And they're speaking out and they're not having it they're not gonna they're not going to allow us to continue to destroy her and her point is that if science teachers can tap into that compassion and that curiosity and show the way that scientists have messed up. Kids might take up an interest in science. I love it and if we can't do that then we are gonna lose on. And i think it's hard were minority kids. They already don't see themselves as the teacher or the prisoners doing the science so that already kind of puts up a block of well. That's just what the old white main with crazy hairdo and so another thing. Let me see a does is named drop scientists of color as often as possible. She'll talk about astrophysicist. Did eisler medical physicist hadean ecole green astronauts. Joseph akaba and jeanette epps. She designed paper rocket lesson around them and this helps kids develop a mental picture of a career in stem beyond a doctor or a dentist. This is so cool because it's not just about teaching science history right. It's also helping. Students see themselves as scientists and for gretchen craig. Turner the next teacher. I want to introduce you to this. Level of engagement becomes even more important as students get older and start to get into their teenage years and develop their own opinions their own opinions about science. Yeah to be critical of it. Oh yeah that was not in my k. through twelve science education hers either. I don't remember a lot of writing or Opinions being part of science in fact it was very much i believe taught. The opinions didn't belong in science right that it was supposed to be a
Want To Dismantle Racism In Science? Start In The Classroom

They already don't see themselves as the teacher or the Christmas doing the science. So that already unemployed simple block of well, that's just what the old white man with the crazy hairdo. and. So another thing let me see Ya does is namedrop scientists of color as often as possible. She'll talk about a physicist did Eisler medical physicists had he and Ecole, green astronauts, Joseph Akaba, and genetic APPs. She designed a paper rocket lesson around them and this helps kids develop a mental picture of a career in stem beyond a doctor or a dentist. This is so cool because it's not just about teaching science history, right? It's also helping students see themselves as scientists and for Gretchen Craig. Turner. The next teacher I, want to introduce you to. This level of engagement becomes even more important students get older and start to you know get into their teenage years and develop their own opinions their own opinions about science. Yeah. You know to be critical of it. Oh. Yeah. That was not in my k. through twelve science education hers either I don't remember a lot of writing or opinions being a part of science. In fact, it was very much I believe taught the opinions didn't belong in science right that it was supposed to be a right answer Gretchen teaches. At Burlington Edison High. School. In Washington state she is white and her classroom to be as inclusive as possible and to reflect the diversity of the student body and in her first year of teaching a biotech class. This was back in two thousand, ten in English teacher gave her a copy of the book. The immortal life of Henrietta lacks was like you should teach the steer students. Yeah. So the history of the Hilo Cell Line Yep. So Henrietta, lacks cancer cells were used for years by scientists without her family's knowledge cells that. One. Of the most important cell lines in medical research, her case raises so many questions about patients, rights. Yep questions raised in this book. So Gretchen got a bunch of hardcover books for her class and we read it and. It shaped how I teach in tremendous ways because the students responded to it. So strongly, you know they were excited maybe not at first I still get a lot of Turner. This isn't an English class, right but but they got into it. So into it, it is a six week unit the book in a Science Class. STUDENTS DO SELL labs while they're reading and they journal to. Okay so they're jotting down notes on different themes like medical apartheid informed consent lab science, and at the end they write a big paper and also oftentimes in class, there will be students who who's own families have experienced medical apartheid in the. Effects of that and I think some of the students and see themselves in the story of the lacks family. The conversations become really personal and probing not. You know necessarily what you'd expect in science class but exactly what Gretchen is hoping for well I, think what you know many young people ultimately want from their teachers is to be seen into be heard. And so if the science curriculum. if they feel seen and heard through that curriculum, they're more invested. So when her students learn about genetic testing, Gretchen includes a film about the innocence project and they're a group that uses DNA testing to exonerate those who've been wrongfully imprisoned. And Gretchen has her students, write poetry and songs as kind of oaths to those wrongfully convicted my blood, my skin, my hair, all held the key to my freedom DNA. My eyes glazed over desperate for relief with a pain. I now understood my hand reaches for I. Don't Know How often you're around teenagers. But the. Teenagers of this just tremendous sense of justice and what is right you know, and so those conversations are often very passionate for students But it's also the world that they live in. Wow I mean kwong, there's so many things in here. That are so powerful in and I know there's a lot of science teacher who listened to shortwave who might want to incorporate racial justice in history into their teaching too I mean, where do they look well Gretchen and let me see a- had the same advice which is at teachers should fill in the gaps in their own racial understanding I learn about the history of science or their field, and that's exactly what the last teacher I spoke with is doing. Vigia satiety is a college professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and looking critically at her own field statistics has been hard painful work. You know I honestly I just feel like I'm I missed something that was really important to learn about my discipline and I'm I'm a little bit mad at myself for not being curious on my own to figure out the origins of things and she has been startled to realize the full extent to which modern statistics draws upon the work of you. Genesis Francis Colton Karl Pearson Ronald Fisher. Some of the most foundational tools and stem like the normal distribution curve were applied to support their racist and eugenicist theories tools that we. Use today, but we don't really stop to think about the people who created them and why they created them. So the is trying to stop to teach yourself where these came from, but to not rush the process with some slapdash curriculum, she wants to incorporate these historical into her classes with care I want to give it the space deserves and of course, and not not to feel like this awkward add on that people can optionally engage in in a way that centers the students Vigie like all the teachers I spoke with designs, her classes by asking herself who's being left behind with this material, and how can I bring them along? That's what can be gained from. And anti-racist science education I think all of us in our minds have been in or heard of course where the professor says look to the laugh looked the right. One of you won't be here at the end of this time or you know something horrible this should not ever be uttered in a classroom. I say look to your left to your right like I. Want you all to stay. I want you all the love my field as much as I. Love my field because there's so many interesting things you could do with it and we really could use your wonderful mind and our discipline. We could use your perspective and the things that you bring. So basically to change science, we have to change how we teach science. To fix the lab gotta fix the classroom.

Kabre has been a staple staple and quarter rico folklore for decades since the first goat was found drained of its blood the explanation for the goats death could have been anything but there were those who wondered if the Kabre had a glass crawled out of the pages of folklore as soon as word of the Puerto Rican farm animals brokers brokers having been drained of their blood farmers in other countries began complaining of their own attacks animals from Mexico. Argentina Chile Colombia and the United States. Where all die in the same gruesome death seemingly with no explanation. Medi critics of the existence of the tube. AKABA claimed that. "I'm not going to be giving all of these films. Good bad or ugly because there are a lot of films to get through. But also at a film festival. It is just different. Type of of vibe. So yeah. So if you're looking for a rating of all of these I'm not gonna do that on the episode hit me up on social media or send me an Email about review at g mail dot com. And I can maybe give it to you. Then. Yes, I was opening night. Those four short films and two feature length films day to was packed so day-to had multiple short films. There's actually an international shorts block where there were how many were there. I three six nine while like fifteen I think short films some of these. I mean, they ranged from one minute films about two minute films to thirty minute film. I think is the longest short film that was during this weekend. So from one minute thirty minutes, there's just a ton of righty of short films. So what I will do with the short film, screening blocks. Is that one I have picked out an honorable. Dimension. And then a favorite from the block from each of those blocks. And then at the end of the episode, I'm wrapping this up, then it will give my favorite feature of the festival. So the four PM international shorts on Saturday. There were ton of them. I can't go through all of them that would be menace, but I will highlight a couple so my honorable mention for the international shorts. This is actually I did not know that this is going to be I thought it was going to be short film, but it was essentially a music video slash experimental. Film called free dream from the UK or the full title is freak dream. Don't wanna be that. Which I think is the name of the song from the band freak dream. This video is a trip. It basically takes the animation style from the old like Monty python and the holy or Monty python's flying circus that. Style or have like a painting, and then the job would kind of move or the is would move, but it was not like this fully animated image. It takes that. And then just makes it weird and super twisted where as you would see this image of a person with either boils on their face or a growth or something like that. And it would split open. But behind it would be these crazy visualizations with either like an audio spectrum behind it or just some flashing lights and colors all while having the song playing the background. So this is interesting that it was essentially just a music video that as part of this dome festival mainly because of the way the tone is of the song and of the the video. So it's really interesting that was freak- dream from the UK. I liked that it was just super weird and out there, but my favorite. From the four pm block of international shorts on Saturday was Ludar from Australia. Does actually so I was like picking this as my favorite that day was writing stuff down. And then when I saw the guys at QA, I was like, I gotta talk to those guys. So definitely look forward to that interview with not pop and Roberta lunches bail Lucho. Her is a story of a young man who basically it is about identity. You know, he's trying to figure out his place in things, and it reminded me of a lot of personal experiences that I have gone through in the sense of either whether it is a code switching type of thing we have to be one version of yourself with certain people. And so he is a Canadian Mexican character where he almost has to rely on other people in the film to hell him about Mexican culture. One point troop Akaba is mentioned, and he's asking this girl that he's he was like, wait..

"Like they have skiing and Chilean stuff. True never been. But I've heard true. But originally this whole thing started in believe in France because people wouldn't excuse me. We're not able to drive to the mountain. So French are horrible drivers. I'll just I grew up. My mom was a history about teacher. And I grew up traveling around the the Europe every summer, I remember staying in a hotel in Paris. And watching some I was twelve watching some person park Akaba below me on the street, and they were little like five hundred ninety little European cars. And so they drove it forwards into the parking space and bump the car in front, and it went bump bump bump up all the costs down, then they backed up and bump the cop behind was bump bump bump bump up all the car. So the French are horrible drivers. So no wonder they needed a win to drive. They can't even drive in the summer. The no wonder they would need a winter driving. Joie would probably be. Is relaxing. However. Yeah. So so the French they needed to help the French learn how to navigate snow, so they started these winter driving schools. Right. Exactly. And so then it just kind of migrated over the United States and the Bridgestone schools actually booked solid. The whole season. So it's really hard to get into you. But if you can do it it's great for teens. They say they teach anybody from the age of sixteen to eighty two. So it's definitely. We say is definitely a really great experience at the driving school. They teach you more weight distribution and how you're driving. So if you're going to fasten your sliding and the way is moving forward, then take the foot off the brake and put on the gas that will shift the way back to the back wheels. Which is something you've really don't think about when you're sliding in the ice. So they want you to be balanced, basic, right? Exactly. And then I'll help understeer or oversteer get you out of that situation. So and so you went on the course to star with any instruction. They had. No we had instructions. All right. So they didn't really evaluate what sort of drive of the you were before you started now. And then once they got in there were you got it. Now, you've already had some education, right? See sit there in the classroom for good our so and they go over the whole course, and what they're expecting for at least give you snacks. Yes. Okay. I had breakfast sandwich. We got the really early. So anyway, so of course, was pretty interesting. But let's talk about the two cars and drove. Yes. Okay. So you I know that you you've driven these calls before me, by the way, I've given the row four, but I haven't driven the Toyota Prius all wheel drive. I cannot tell you how impressed. I was. You know, how free is always get such a bad grasses backup. Or is that okay? This is a girl who has nothing, but sports cars and giant trust and likes diesel likes gas. Gas. Yeah. Lots of noise in your face. And you're telling me you like a Prius. Okay. All you Prius owners out there. It's time to upgrade. This thing is phenomenal. It's the new one is all wheel drive, and it basically to will, of course, until you need it. And then it goes to the all well, but yeah, I was pretty impressed with that. We were taking at about forty five miles an hour. Like, I said down the slope slamming the foot on the brakes. No sliding at all. Then we'd go slaloming, and we did it in all the gears so echo mode all the driving mode power. Yeah. Power mode. That was fun. Really? Yeah. And it handled wonderfully. Drifted around corners because I'm not going to any winter driving school away Yukon drifted it was it was incredible. By auto expert more. Our auto expert with Nick files is coming up on KOMO news..

"They take a lot of fun. But anyway for years, it's been showing up as lightly vitamin d deficient. And so I've I swore to my doctor. All right. I will take these vitamin d supplements every day, and I remember to do I keep them right next to my coffee. And so I never forget to make coffee, and so my vitamins are right there. I take these vitamin DS. But I read this story, and I it's very very compelling. I think that that. Yes. It's like a correlation not causation thing that yes, there are they're they're people with very high levels of vitamin D tend to be healthier and have a lower risk of. All sorts of things, you know, excluding heart problems in all sorts of things. But the reason isn't because they're full of vitamin d they have vitamin d because they go outside all the time and they've active lifestyle. Yes. Yes. This through right. Like. So in that makes so much sense in the world to me, and they're like and this over over fear of the sun in the United States is really bad. Like, yes. Getting a sunburn is really bad for your skin tanning getting your skin as dark as it can get very bad for your skin in the long run. You can get these skin cancers. But even even then the type of skin cancers that you tend to get from long-term over exposure to the sun are among the most treatable cancers that you can have it's not it's not the worst thing in the world. But we've gotten to the point where there's a lot of supposedly health conscious Americans who literally just avoid the sun at all costs. They just don't get any sun, and that's actually very bad for you. Because that's where the vitamin d. That's you know, that's supposedly good for you. And there's no clinical proof that taking a little tiny vitamin d pill instead of going out and being active in the sun, actually has any of the benefits that the people who have their vitamin d from healthy outdoor lifestyles, do and that. You're talking about. There was one. I think a few months before there was more about the guy. There's like one guy who has been such a vitamin d advocate that Stockton has overwhelmed. Everybody else's like, whatever. And he it's it's actually almost entirely do this one person's influence, it's not even like a drug industry thing, or you know, help laments thing. It's just one guy has had a mania about it. And he's wrong. Now, you know, he's not wrong. Like he's in falsifying data, but his conclusions aren't actually well supported enough and Akaba should but on this a long time ago because right, it doesn't courage people to take vitamin d instead of going outside. And yeah, that article was great about how like actually the kinds of skin cancers. People get that are most that are worst are either genetic or they're caused by non son related reasons. Right. Most of those so yes, you can get sunburns. And yes, we have the ozone depletion in. There are other things that are an issue but spending thirty minutes in the sun or an hour in some without any sunscreen for. People is probably a really good thing adding time of year, and whatever. No, it's funny because you wonder you're like, you're like if the sun was that bad and pre, you know, even when I was only it was thicker wouldn't everyone have died of cancer in like nineteen forty they'd be covered in skin cancer. As people spend most people spent most of the time outdoor before offices, and in even as we became an industrialized society..

That actually when you have depression crops. They the carbon goes down about forty percent goes down into the roots, and that carbon is in the form of sugar like carbon molecule and that sugar feeds the micro organisms arise OEMs. Yeah. Silia and and it's food. And so the plan gives the food away those things and turn breakdown minerals that is to say, the rocks, and the salt sand, whatever their breaks it down and makes us minerals bioavailable to the plant which makes a plan healthier row and grow and both together then create soil that retains from three to ten to twenty times more water. And so it gives the source of floods and droughts because I can absorb the Warren's orbited and can't keep it. But on the other hand, if Armagh has kind of soil, you do have a drought, you actually have a is still going to make it as opposed to being perishing right away because you have no water in the soil. So you create a water Bank, which prevents flooding at the same time, you Terada Bank which protects crop and the water is a huge issue. I mean, I remember being an talk by Jim Kim, the ahead of the World Bank. And he said the wars of the future will be fought over water not oil. And when you think about it five percent of their earth surface is freshwater one percent is in Russia under Putin. So who knows going out of that Lake Baikal those four percent of the rest of us, and we're depleting it and rapid rates are unsustainable. And I mean, imagine if we run into water I like the guy the good side though, which is that global wearing produces more water in the air. And that's when the hurricane. So if you haven't agricultural system that is much more attentive of water. I mean, I remember farmer we talked to and he pointed to some ground over there. He said, you know, we'd get half an inch rainy pool you would pull right on that low the land. He said we had thirteen inches. The water, and we didn't pull it all. And so so we can actually do something which is very interesting not talked about so much which is create an agricultural system that brings a water back. Okay. And when you rehydrate the soil, you cool, there's yeah. Just like we perspire, right? And we call the body while the earth is the same. So when his dry, which is it's getting buried dry, right? Then it gets hotter. If it's full of water in a as then it responds in a close it on while the other part of this whole soil story is that the soil if it's not holding the carbon then it's releasing the environment. I think of the soil is sort of the rainforest of the prairies it goes environment. And it goes into the oceans the, and then you get the death of a fight. Oh, plankton which. Fifty percent of our oxygen. So not only we're going to overheat and die from a heat. We're gonna actually suffocate 'cause there's not an auction for us to breathe. Yeah. And I'm you kind of go into wherever else is going to all the things that go wrong. Yeah. And the fixed, but the soil the whole thing, but also fixing our relationship to the oceans, which is the oceans can be farmed in such a way that transforms right now, the CEO's going carbonic acid and acidifying oceans, and then killing off fighter plankton and other things. And so we can start to look at the oceans as places that can be farmed kelp is number one sequester quiz sequestration. Organism in the planet is kelp not bamboos kelp and decided I know Sal the other night. It's great. Yeah. "The gallery to sit up or angle on our third shot to get up announce a four which he did but it was i mean guys it was guys we're like blown away by how hard it had gotten a very short period of time and it was like oh my gosh this is a whole new era here i guess that was the hootie johnson era and it was like you know battened down the hatches there because this place has just gotten really really hard and fill one at seven under i think that year and then the next year zach johnson one at one over i think that they were you know there were a lot of changes in that time period in it i think there was is that the there was some weather because he finished the third round on that sunday morning is that right there was definitely some whether yes we had to finish some golf on sunday morning and and then you know golf's a funny game and my closest friend who's a caddy is joel akaba who now caddies tiger woods but he caddied for years and years or fred couples and i you know i just remember how that whole thing kind of lined up that we can fred is a great player who is you know unlucky in my opinion only to win one masters and also very unlucky to to to to be dealt a card that he was dealt in terms of his health and his back and whatnot there's no telling what he might have done any play with a good back is entire career but we got paired with him on sunday and it was it was a beautiful beautiful sunday and augusta seventy degrees and sunny in virtually no wind and it was a real cool experience to be out there for four or five hours with him so they're wearing a ton of fireworks on the front nine filled actually birdied seven on that sunday and eight and then on thirteen he pushed his drive a little.

"Well that's certainly say there's there's no suggestion that there was disagreement tycoons tabby but it's the things you have to do as a caddy is it's it's it's what you say how you said there's a patty and it's few words as possible the last thing you wanna do as a catechist is to put a negative thought right by his mind and the situation like that if i'm if i'm carrying tiger and i say oh my gosh no i don't like dr relic three would well i'm gonna since telling him that i think he might not put the best swing on it and you've got to be really careful with how you relate what you're thinking but i think that your driver was an absolute no brainer there for tiger i think it was the right club keep in mind you know he he's trying to catch rory mcilroy at that point who's all guns blazing a couple of groups behind him and he still has the play that sixty hold the tiger was on an so tiga was probably thinking if i drive this ball in the fairway and take care of that right bunker i'm gonna have a wedge into a par five and i can make three and possibly pick up a shot maybe too so i i liked what he was thinking and and and i think a hundred times out of one hundred he did the same thing again so the last thing out of caddy's mouse shouldn't be if you pull that club out you're gonna blow the tournament that would be bad no it'd be you probably go straight to the bus station after that but you're right i mean and that intricate relationship is hard you would fill had it forever and you see that with jordan speed and michael gretler now and obviously tiger joel akaba have been a really good pairing for a long time so one thing that was interesting after the tournament bones was rory sort of alluding to the fact that maybe maybe we're selling too much booze maybe a little too much suds being on display at the tournament we've seen a couple of times we saw justin thomas kick somebody out during the was at the plan for before the playoff with luke list at the honda yeah we've seen other events most most baseball games they caught.
