Try It free for thirty days and get a free ten pound scale. When you visit http the DOT com slash B W daily Uh from wondering I'm David Brown and this is business wars daily on this Friday July nineteenth? I don't know about you but some days I get at least a half. A dozen Robo calls the annoying solicitation. Solicitation calls that appear to come from your home area code while according to C._N._N.. Four point three billion Robo calls were placed just last month alone the F._C._C. Says Consumers complain about unwanted calls more more often than anything else. The agency gets some two hundred thousand complaints about the darn things every year so the F._C._C.'s been stepping up its demands that phone companies solve the problem last November. The agency asked providers to implement technology that would authenticate caller I._D.. That is to guarantee that the call that looks like it's coming from your neighbor. Actually is the timeframe by the end of twenty nineteen last week A._T.. and. Not became the first big service provider to offer automatic caller I._D.. Authentication and blocking it starting by adding the service to new phone lines the company says existing customers will get it in the coming months and we'll be notified via text when the feature sure is turned on. It's an opt out feature meaning. You'll get it unless you don't want it. You can attempt to block those Robo calls now on your own. Although if you're like me probably didn't know it the major service providers fighters A._T.. And T. Verizon sprint and t mobile all offer robocall blocking or at least alerts as opt in features right now some for free others for a monthly fee being I out of the gate is a big deal for A._T.. And T. if you hate. robocalls you might just be willing to change service providers to one that reduces their number right now automatic spam. Call blocking is a competitive advantage but A._t.. And T. won't be able to keep that first mover advantage for long this February worry F._C._C. Chairman Ajit Pie worn telecom providers that if they don't implement the technology by the end of the year the agency will consider regulatory action. Most providers are working on it but as pie said back in February some summer hedging about the deadline behind the scenes the technology which goes by the acronym stir shaken isn't easy to implement experts say it can be hard for the algorithms to distinguish between a criminal spam ring flooding phones with fake vacation offers and say. A your local high school making Robo calls about the snowstorm still running afoul of the F._C._c. something no telecom business wants to do but losing customers to a faster more innovative rival. That's even worse so A._T.. And T.'s move could light a fire under horizon and the other big wireless companies that means if we're lucky by the end of the year it will matter much which service provider you use the number of spoofed called should God mercifully decline from wondering this is business wars daily. "Yeah, that got to the the sort of pedestal, or the the, you know, has enshrined as it was in immplementation before just reverts in in some in as many ways. That's right. And you know, I haven't read the brief, but I would imagine that that brief would say something like, well, congress as an acted in this is legislative pronouncement and now you can vacate this prior decision because there's because essentially the check on the court is congress. So is this series of checks and balance? Could that even be used as argument or precedent against saying, say, look, this was this was taken apart. This was vacated, this was removed and once upon a time. So why on earth would we try to? It would be foolish to go in this path again, which really kind of cl-. Closes the the the door on it know as this has been gutted, oh, no doubt. It will make it much more difficult for anybody raising these particular types of challenges. They'll have to come up with other sort of rationales Hathaway's if today of sanity comes, you know, down down the road a little bit. I imagine it'll be a lot of this reconstruction happening and this this will be just another challenge, but sticking with the FCC for a moment. Guys remember that they reported they were hacked. Their comments system was hacked during this whole net neutrality discussion. Well, turns out that never happened. In fact, you know a lot of stab at that from from the star, but they come clean on the fact that ape reported hack of its comment system. Last year never actually took place after a report from the it's on inspector general, found the lack of evidence supporting the idea. But that doesn't mean that it still can't be blamed on Obama because chairman Ajit pie blamed the four. Chief information officer and the Obama administration for providing inaccurate information about this incident to me, my office congress and the American people the semi apology and finger-pointing are a disappointing conclusion to the year long web of obfuscation that the FCC has woven. Yes from techcrunch. Since the first moment it was reported that there was a hack the system. There have been questions about the nature scale in response to it that the FCC has avoided even under direct congressional questioning. It's just incredible to me how this honest how obviously dishonest people are, and it doesn't matter wants that caught. They just continue, oh, they'll just keep us going. And I read this articles well, and it just seems strange to me that the comments system itself was overwhelmed that we don't know necessarily by what it was overwhelmed. Right was it was a comments that were in favor of net neutrality were? Was it the astroturf ING that occurred using Americans personal. Information and identities to make these bogus claims that they were opponents of net neutrality and in favor of the restore internet freedom act. And if that was the case, if it was the case that it was the astroturf at over wellness system, I think that could frankly be considered some form of attack because they exploited a vulnerability in a system, namely vulnerability that allowed the exploitation of the personal identifying information of Americans to be used in this particular manner, and then overwhelm the system in a way that ordinary people that were in favor of net neutrality couldn't use it. Yeah, you could say that Alex and I think that's a good possibility, but also that's a possibility that there are so many people arguing in favor of preserving that neutrality that they overwhelm the system and that's considered an attack by the Trump administration. People expressing their opinions on something. Literally, if you look at how they react to anybody expressing their opinions when it doesn't align with there's, it's it's, it's a, it's an attack, you know. It's something that that that needs to be stopped. So that's how they dealt with it. I'm sorry, Cheshire yesterday. Promulgated by FOX, then it's not informed decision. Now, look at it. That's pretty much how they do look at it. Okay. There's some good news. There's some good news here where basically something an injustice is being is being corrected to a degree. Anyway, people end up in jail in the city will now be able to use the phone lines..

"Hi i'm joe biden you're listening to biden's brief a collection of news and other stories of caught my attention the efc's latest moves could worsen the digital divide by clint finley for wiredcom when ajit pie became chair of the federal communications commission earlier this year he pledged to make bridging the digital divide a top priority thursday the commission took several steps that could worsen the divide by making it harder for poor and rural americans to access telecom services in particular the agency said it is considering changes to its lifeline program that helps low income americans pay for telephone and internet service and to allow telecom companies to decommission aging dsl connections in rural areas without replacing them the proposed changes to the lifeline program would reduce the available subsidies make them available to fewer people and cover fewer carriers during a busy meeting the commission also approved as expected a controversial overhaul of media ownership rules and reforms enabling telcos to crackdown robocaller says amongst other proposals the lifeline program crea during the reagan administration is funded by a surcharge on phone services it initially subsidized landline phones but was later expanded to mobile phone service last year the fcc voted to include broadband internet as well in february however pie reversed his predecessors decision and halted a planned expansion to nine broadband providers thursday the fcc voted to consider a proposal that would tighten eligibility rules for consumers to qualify for subsidies and strengthen audits of lifeline providers republican members said they were responding to a government accountability office report that found widespread abuse of the lifeline program including enrolments filed in the names of dead people and wasteful spending another part of the proposal suggests stopping lifeline subsidies through carriers like track phone that sell access to networks owned by other companies such as at t and for rizon according to the advocacy group.

"Jake right now so the federal courts have said yes it's a utility does fcc chairman ajit pie essentially say no it isn't that's what they are going to claim in so we'll see what happens it is very likely there will be lawsuits to challenge the validity of that but ultimately i think what we need if we want to move forward is to establish laws that actually set in place stable rules as to how to classify the internet that something some lawmakers are floating right now but in the short term i think this will be fought in the courts will here's another question from a takeaway listener this is from susannah she writes i'm worried about losing net neutrality because i work in the internet industry i worry i won't have a job of startups can't build new apps without bribing ias peace and if i have to pay a fortune to use it vpns to work from home a david is at a legitimate concern parts of it certainly are so for example if you're a startup that provides a streaming video service you could find yourself having to pay large amounts of fees to get access to the same amount of bandwith as other larger companies such as netflixing or hulu so in that sense this could potentially harm innovation on the other hand it seems less likely that isps will block an entire class of services like a vpns so i think some of the concerns are warranted but the idea that i as peas will start censoring the internet seems less likely just because that would cause outrage and that would be harmful to the bottom line justin on twitter is asking how the big giant content providers are gonna hold their own against the big isps like khan cast and at t he writes on twitter are their large corporations who will suffer from this amazon netflixing google what stopping them from making their own infrastructure just going around these other be companies yeah that's a great question so there is certainly potential for harm for even the big companies in you know why aren't they building there on infrastructure it ends up that.
