Astros Scandal: MLB's Nightmare Continues

"You've been up in the northeast all winner in near thirty degrees to come down here in the first days of Spring and you already getting seventy five eighty and muggy. It's very different but you know hot not only with the weather but also with the players who well let's get into that Are you covering baseball a long time? Have you ever seen anything like we've witnessed over the last week? Absolutely not look. I mean the early days of spring training are usually about. Who's in good shape who worked? What pitch they worked on during the winter and here it's just flame-throwing. I know personally. I lost respect for those guys. Everyone in the show in the big leagues lost respect for those guys day after day after day of players being critical. But the part. That's so different is the peer to peer stuff. It's damaging to baseball. I feel like every single guy over. There needs a beating even through the steroid era. You didn't see this. Collective anger aimed at one group of players. The way we've seen other players so angry with the Houston Astros. They're angry at the Astros. And they're also angry at commissioner rob Manfred who stepped in it. I think it's fair to say on Sunday at his first press conference of Spring Training when he said the idea of an asterisk or asking for a piece of metal back seems a futile act. Justin Turner on the dodgers was not pleased. You know calling the world series trophy piece of metal. I mean I don't know if there's ever won anything in his life. Maybe he hasn't but the reason every guys in this room the reason every guy is working out all off season and showing up to camp early and putting it all the time. Effort is specifically for that trophy. I think we're used to seeing the likes of this directed towards the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell but before now Manfred laid pretty low. How has he generally been perceived by the players in the past well? There's no doubt that generally speaking that the relationship between players and Major League baseball is at its worst. I think in like twenty five years. You know what happened in the last time. The CBA was negotiated. Was the owners absolutely routed? The players in those talks getting a lot of advantages financial advantages taking a lot of the high ground that the players had owned the past and the last couple of years. We've seen that play out. In Free Agency. In veteran players have felt like that when they reach free agency. They're not getting as much money as they should have. So that's sort of been percolating the last couple of years and then when you have robbed make the comments that he he. He's made about the Astros in his handling of that case I think all that anger and it was built upon so he made the comment at the beginning of the week. What is he said since then? Well he acknowledged. He met with reporters on Tuesday night that he was mistaken in what he said. I referred to the World Series Trophy in a disrespectful way. And I want to apologize for that. There's no excuse for it I made a mistake. I was trying to make a point but I should have made it in a more effective way and again I want to apologize for it. Actually think that this was an important first step because he's made a lot of mistakes in this like the fact that in two thousand seventeen when you had the apple watch situation between the RED SOX and Yankees. He missed an opportunity at that time to draw a line in the sand to make it clear to everybody. Look Science. Stealing using electronics is not going to be accepted. He didn't do it in seventeen he didn't do it in eighteen. And let's face it when you listen to the players. Their anger over the fact that members the Astra's weren't disciplined that's viewed as another mistake. So I thought it was important for rob finally to acknowledge that. He's made mistakes. During this process. The players seem to have a problem with the fact that the astros players were given immunity a couple of days ago. Mike Trout said I don't agree with the the punishments you know the players not You know getting anything you know. There was a player driven You know thing cheat like that and not get anything it's it's It's sad to see which is remarkable buster because it's probably the most interesting thing might drive as every said about something other than the weather but it seems to be the way a lot of players feel why didn't Manfred punish them. Rob was in a position where this is not like the AA where you know the the head of the lake and come in and basically threaten players into cooperation. Major League baseball players are represented by the Union and so as they began this negotiation if they had simply gone in and told the players. Look we're coming you get the information. It would have been easy for the players to lawyer up and for a lot of the answers to Major League baseball to be along the lines of. I don't recall or I didn't hear that banging of the trash can and there's not really any way to challenge that and it would have been much more difficult for them to establish information if you remember fourteen years ago. George Mitchell was commissioned by Bud Selig to investigate the steroid era. He had no cooperation with the players because of the position of the Union. And I think that Manfred may have had the same situation if he hadn't given the players immunity. I think one thing to baseball looked at was boy we have litigation arbitration playing over the whole summer. At least this is one way to get to the truth quickly. Established what happened and try to put this in a rear view mirror. That clearly has not been as simple as they as they anticipated. Manfred has suggested that the players could have filed grievances because the Astros General Manager never sent along the rules. And I put the clubs on notice as to what exactly the rules were and how they were going to be treated going forward among the other failures of that organization. That information never made its way to the players. I was awesome. Well they just didn't do it. If we had disciplined the players in all likelihood we were GONNA have grievances and grievances that we were going to lose on the basis that we never properly inform them the rule so given those two. That's exactly right and that's sort of a classic thing because if you remember when Aj hinch the Astros manager did his interview with. Tom Produce one of the questions asked him was. Did Jeff Luneau tell you about this memo and Aj's answered very initially. No HE DIDN'T. The players could have done the same thing. Now you and I know from a point of view of common sense. That's kind of absurd because when the red sox apple watch thing happened in September two thousand seventeen that was out there like it was very public in disgust. That rob Manfred had come down with discipline and in warned. Everybody don't participate in this but again we're into lawyer speak now where well was they actually told specifically that. I wasn't allowed to do a B and C. No I wasn't I don't recall and would have been a morass rob's been commissioner now for five years buster. Is there any chance. He doesn't survive this no he. He's totally fine because of how much money they're making. I mentioned the two thousand sixteen collective bargaining agreement. How they were such an advantageous position when it comes to things like the luxury tax and they're making money hand over fist and for that reason he's fine. When people think about the commissioner I think casual fans will look at them as being the representative of the sport and representing the interests of fans and players and teams know. He's a team employee. He works for the owners and he's been doing a great job at making the owners a lot of money. He's on very solid ground

Houston Astros sign stealing scandal: Carlos Beltrán had a 'sway over the clubhouse'

"AJ. Hinch had a recent interview with the MLB network. He did not make any excuses for failure to prevent the answers legal practices. But what he mentioned that Carlos Beltran's sway over the clubhouse. Help explain the inaction of hinch and other coaches and players. No one wanted to challenge Carlos. Beltran what you're the manager of a baseball team. You're supposed to be the top guy in in that clubhouse how were you challenged threatened by Carlos Beltran at all? How now of course? I've never played major league baseball so I don't know what the actual clubhouse dynamic is there. I know teams want veteran presence in their for their experience and to help young guys through through their problems and some issues that they go through. Because hey happens to us ever happens to everybody in the league happens to everybody like I mentioned. Some players mentioned there in their first year. They didn't want to challenge veteran. They didn't want to go against the status quo or the status quo that they thought was in place because they were just there's rookie. They didn't know any any better. Was that excuse can only go for so long but you know what? I'm saying

Report: Astros' sign-stealing scheme began with front office 'Codebreaker' program

"Jeff Passan is an mlb the insider for ESPN. He's in West Palm Beach at the Astros Spring Training Facility. I keep thinking we're done talking about the Astros and then this story he keeps roaring right on back so the latest is we have. Aj hinch the former manager making his first public statement than jared diamond of the Wall Street Journal Final published a story with evidence that the Houston Front office laid the groundwork for some cheating with a system called code breaker. Can you bring us up to date date on us. Major League Baseball would love it. If this story went away in the Houston Astros would love it if this story went away and yet this onion with seemingly endless layers we'll start with the codebreakers story and the fact that we're talking about a baseball team and they have a system in place called code breaker in that one of their front office officials was referring ferring to it in emails as their dark arts. That helped win them a championship. Shows you just how deep the nefarious -ness of the the astros went the way it worked was they would have people in put signs and signed sequences this is into an excel spreadsheet and that excel spreadsheet would use an algorithm to spit out what the pitches were going to be. There's a lot to unpack here but I'll start here. I keep hearing that. These are the smartest guys in baseball. The Astros in particular right are geniuses it is and yet they called their scheme code breaker and put it in an email. I I don't even we know what to say other than you know in one of the early episodes of ESPN daily. We talked about the Astros. And and in that episode I remember pretty distinctly using a word Hubris when we look back on this astros team. Five of ten twenty years from now I think Hubris is ultimately going to be the defining characteristic of this team. The other thing that sort of moves the story forward so far as when the initial punishment came down Jeff often rob Manfred statement came out he seemed to put most of the blame. If not all of it really on the players now. We're here in the front office. They were up to their own. Misdeeds is that going to expand the punishment now and that's the curious part of this right the notion that at the front office which is still there is totally clean in this. It just doesn't hold a lot of water. Which is why the report that it came out in the Wall Street Journal was so damning because it name names it referred to a five page letter that Rob Manfred had sent to Jeff Luna that laid out his his case for Luna being involved in this now Luna still denies all of this? He said I would get these emails but I would just read the first page if you are essentially the CEO of baseball operations in an organization. Is it not your duty to read through emails. That people on your we're team or sending you particularly ones that might include references to these dark arts to these championship winning endeavors that you as the CEO either green lit or too incompetent to know we're going on. I would like to not be on the record for judging someone for not reading a very very long email right now you. You don't finish emails. I always read every long. Email my colleagues because you are the CEO Oh of ESPN daily and you know it would be wrong to do otherwise when you guys are figuring out the dark arts of casting hopefully code breaking going on over here at the same time as this Wall Street Journal story comes out. Aj hinch is being interviewed. And he was directly. Asked Jeff about whether whether players had buzzers under their jerseys to alert them to whether pitches becoming. Can you assure us there were no buzzers or anything like that. Being investigated the gated for three months. And the Commissioner's Office did as thorough investigation as anyone could imagine was possible you know. He mentioned the emails the text messages and I believe him. What did you make of his comments? All you have to do is just saying no. And the fact that he didn't come out and say no I think said a lot and is only fueling the fire here. I have been hearing for for upward of two years now about what one source called a pitch picking Algorithm. And that's exactly what code. Code Breaker was in so these little snippets. That I've been hearing whispers about but I try to track down and confirm every single single one of them. I mean every single one of them has become true. The only one at this point that has not been confirmed is being real is the buzzers.

A.J. Hinch’s take on A’s Mike Fiers exposing Astros’ sign-stealing

"Well for the first time since the sign stealing scandal broke AJ Hinch is talking publicly in an interview with MLB network former Houston Astros manager A. J. hinted midi could have done more to stop the sign stealing scheme that took place under his watch ultimately leading to his year long suspension and then dismissal from the Stroh's and an initiator didn't endorse it but I but I was the manager and I think there's a responsibility when you're in a position to end it engine manager breaking monitors used to help relay signals on two separate occasions when asked if he had any regrets I should have had a more forceful interaction at the at the at the appropriate time in chatting the understands why now some view the Astros twenty seventeen World Series win as

Did cheating help Astros win World Series? Hinch says we may never know

"Aj hinch and the interview. He did finally breaking his silence of the disgraced astros manager who was fired in the wake of the breaking story in major league. Next glad you said that the ask the disgraced astros manager he was not. There's nothing else to call him. He's a disgrace Astros manager He was caught up up in the science. Dealing Scandal of the Astros didn't do enough to stop it and the first thing rob Manfred did was announced his suspension for Major League Baseball and then a couple allows later. The Astros fired him. You mentioned the interview he did. It's going to air tonight. And he was asked. Does this championship that you wanted. Twenty Lee seventeen. Is it tainted by this new scandal. Unfortunately we open that door as a group in that question I may never be answered. We may never know we're going to have to live and move forward and be be better better in the sport but unfortunately no one can really answer. Threw that question. I I can't pinpoint what advantages or what what happened. Or what. Exactly what happened otherwise but we did it to ourselves. Okay wait I can answer. It had had a lot to do. Look at the home road. Splits of all your headers like Jose Altuve. Have you see our relay race. Home and road splits dislike. It's like four twenty at home one twenty on the road and you remember if correctly that was when they remember lost the Games in New York to the Yankees remember the laws and then at home the they won all games. I mean it was an if I'm a dodger fan. I'm salty as well 2017. MLB CHAMPION DOC. There are two parades coming twenty seventeen and twenty eighteen and then back to back. Alex Cora takes that same show on the road and same thing. I I asked we. We know of this movie Bets trae goes through. You know as as Alex Cora cheated to be named later. Is that a part of the look at you know. I think that was the penalty. Not was the red sox train. mookie Betts to the padres and they said No. No you gotta make amends and trading with the dodgers all right shoulder dodger you owe the dodgers at Aj Aj hinch clearly is in that mode all of us do this in our lives. Whenever something bad happens did the interview though he could he could run and hide for year and not be heard from? I think it's better when you get out in front of it. But is he getting out in front of my saying. I don't know what kind of impact this had. Clearly when you're batters know what's it's coming. It's a lot easier when you go to that length of we're putting in electronic sign stealing system and you play the. I'm only the manager card. I couldn't stop this. No one believes please. You know either. The point where he's at the point in his life and all of us do this right when something happens in our lives. It's bad that we're responsible for. What do we try to do at some point? We try rationalize why it happened. And it's not really our fault. Aj hinch is at this point where who knows what he's GonNa do in baseball again. He's going to manage again. Maybe a couple years somewhere where. I'm not quite sure that he's at that point. where I need to reconcile with myself because I am a world series champion and I'm not going to walk around every day going it was tainted? So I'm I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what kind of impact this had altuve as still had to hit the baseball even though he knew what was the old PD argument. So He's in that point of denial. where I'm going is still WANNA walk around and not just feel crappy every day that we won and we won by cheating? So I'm GonNa convince myself that I don't know what we we did. Any act on the game only problem is I get it if you told me that one every game at home then win every game at home even with the cheating scandal. Whoa with knowing what's coming? So that's the part that makes it hard that's why you can't go automatically and say well we should just turn championship over to the dodgers not that the dodgers. aww their fans would want it that way but they didn't win every game using that cheating system so okay so they won three quarters of their. But I'm just saying when eighty percent of they're games that that's the only reason and this could have It doesn't mean that Wa. The team couldn't have beaten them at some point. All I'm saying is I get it cheating. Cheating it helps them. I'm not denying that but it's a reason why you can't take the championship and I don't think that that will work for majorly based on you can easily take like the championship. And you can not awarded to anybody. Say No year but Rob Manfred and look rob Manfred and Adam. Silver are two of the new age commissioners which they they WANNA do nothing they want to do nothing but in grow the game and have great reputations right Adam silver wants to do a little bit less than Rob Manfred but rob Manfred I guarantee aren t you. He thought I'm taking care of this. Here's a suspension for hinch. Here's bench for Jeff Luna. I'm taking care of it and instead what happened. Was it mushroomed out of control to the point. Where an hour an hour after this broke? What was the biggest topic online? Put Pete Rose in the hall of fame. 'cause you're not taking care cheaters enough. This got completely out of control because Manfred doesn't WanNa be the guy where the first line of his wikipedia pages rob Manfred who presided over. MLB taking a world series away from a team for the first time Blah Blah Blah. Aw that would be his legacy. He wasn't going to do it he wasn't going to be the guy to say you're going to look back at my my rain and it's GonNa be pace of play but mainly it's going to be. He took look world series away. He presided over a dark time in major league baseball. He wasn't going to be that guy. I'm not gonNA wear it so I'm GonNa have this suspension and then whatever happens after it gets out of my control and I don't care that's why he didn't do anything. Yeah I I just I never been into it. Even college used to do it and the Olympics and taken away medals and stuff that we watched watched to tell me that Reggie Bush wasn't the heisman trophy winner. You know you could tell me that all you want but I watched that season. Do you know what I mean. So I'm not fully the Internet. I don't think that changes anything. That doesn't take their memory away from me. I think you've just got a penalize the organization but I I'm not into taking championships

Carlos Beltran Out as Mets Manager After Astros' Cheating Scandal

"We got the news about one o'clock today that yet. Another person untied to the Houston Astros. Cheating scandal has lost his job. Carlos Beltran recently hired by the mets to be there next managers out of his job before even having having a meeting in spring training. That's because he was named in. The Commissioner's report released the other day for his role in the Astros signed stealing scandal of two thousand seventeen eighteen Beltran and the mets both indicated. Today that this was a mutual decision but I suspect that a week or two weeks ago even those with knowledge of the science dealing details from two thousand in seventeen believed that Houston. GM Jeff Luneau Astros Manager Aj. Hinch Red Sox manager Alex Cora now Carlos Beltran would still have have their jobs and they're all out and that's where we are probably Vera covers baseball for ESPN. She knows. Carlos Beltran now score very well Marley. How you doing? It's been a crazy week. I think crazy is a very good adjective buster special like no that totally can managers. Were highly touted. I don't have a job today. Unbelievable let's let's start with Carlos Beltran. That is the the most recent news. I'm going to also ask you about Alex. Corsie is we go forward but but I about Carlos. I thought that when the mets didn't put out a statement immediately on Monday evening after the Commissioner's report came out out the fact that the mets didn't come out right away and have a statement from Jeff Wilpon from Brody Bandwagon. And saying this is our guy. Carlos Beltran is our manager edger. And that's what we're going to do moving forward because what was in the report involved the Houston Astros in two thousand seventeen. The commissioners made it clear that Carlos this is not going to be disciplined for his role in that because he's the player at that time but the fact that they didn't put out that statement on Monday and then dragged out into Tuesday day and then Wednesday. You could see that the mets they were weighing their options and just as someone who covered the mets back in one thousand nine hundred seven having worked in New York market for a long. I've never seen an organization that is more affected by public opinion than the mets. And I thought Yep that he at some point. They're going to let him go. What what did you think absolutely couldn't agree more with what you said? And not only that the fact that you know one of the reasons why they hired Beltran was because it was excellent in publicity. Ns S you. And I know spending so much time covering baseball in New York. The mets have failed many times on the PR department. And this would hiring hiring Carlos Beltran. They bought themselves all this goodwill right the return of the prodigal son with everything that had happened when he had left the comments of the Wilpon when he used to be a you know. Oh a mets player. Everything gets kind of water under the bridge. There's just you know one of the most impressive press conferences that I have attended you know at city field so it was just as big. Pr Moment and then all of a sudden I agree with you. They got swayed by public opinion. And one of the things that Carlos Beltran and as you mentioned before which is important you state. The aren't family our friends of mine. So my activity here Sometimes can be a little bit swayed but the point is that can handle the media. He's been you know he was a player for twenty a years worked on a capacity assistant with the Yankees and so on and I feel that this was in my opinion. Definitely a wilpon decision muster. Oh No no question. The way this was described I think Carlos but at a statement they talked about a mutual decision. No way like this like Carlos I think absolutely was set on going forward but they say as all the conversation was taking place in New York to columnists were were taking aim at this and they are asking questions. Well what. What did the mets ask Carlos about? After the first athletic story came out about the signed stealing. And how would the mets feel about Carlos not having credibility with the media and it became a real hot topic on talk radio here and one stat ball started rolling downhill and then Aj hinch losses job and Jeff Luna lost his job and Alex. Cora lost his job. There was no way the mets leadership was going to stand in the way of that momentum and stand up and say in the past it was in the past which by the way is what Brody van wagon and said back in November. He kind of indicated like well. That's not really a mets problem. That's an astros throws problem. But their their their words their tone definitely changes week the only aspect that I can you know Ah have gone in this process. One of the things were Carlos may have had some input. Devil's advocate here. Is that one of the things that Carlos Beltran they'll turn and and you and I have covered a great deal of is the fact that he does not like off. The field distractions buster. And I think at that is the part or they'll go. You know what this is the right decision. He is one of those guys that likes to talk baseball. I remember what it was like the whole scandal with Iran in the Yankees Yankees Carlos Beltran was part of the Yankees Organization at the time as a player and he refused to engage in sort of those conversations so there is an aspect of how much he doesn't like the distraction and then that part certainly you know he could have had any input on but I I agree with you. This isn't you know the mets founded selves in an island. Having to make a decision and they got swayed by Jim Crane did and obviously you know what the Boston Red Sox decided to do. After the imposition of a penalty suspension to Alex Score. So let's breakdown go by the way. Yeah exactly breakout some other elements of this What do you think the mets miss out on? Not Having Carlos Beltran altron their manager. Carlos Beltran is an excellent leader. And I think that's one of those things that has been a little bit missing the New York Mets Organization. He drives arrives you. He's one of those guys that inspires others other players and he also galvanizes clubhouses right. He he was the player for the day when he was with the Yankees. Hanky along with Andrew Miller he always has always been so well spoken and he crosses that kind of you know barrier quote Unquote Latino players. And you know the players that are not Latino and I felt that he could galvanize that clubhouse very very well and I think that's the number one thing that the mets are going to miss out on and this is a man who obviously has left the game for a long time doesn't need the money this isn't right and it was honestly doing this job because he truly wanted to make an impact in organization that really has lost their way a little bit in the last couple of years so I think it's a huge loss. So they mess. We're GONNA do not have Carlos Beltran but I do understand the decision. In terms of the whole quote in quote distractions off the field now. I'm not as close to him as you are if I was I think and he asked me my advice in this situation. Now that he's lost the job of the mets would. I think I would tell them was Carlos you need to hold a press conference in New York have rent out a room at a hotel or restaurant invite all the reporters to come and basically say I'm here to answer all your questions about what went on with Houston with me back in two thousand seventeen eighteen. Because I think that's the only way he's going to be able to manage at some point down the road and all I heard for the last decade is this is someone who absolutely terrific manager in the future future. He has to be great at this job but I think that would allow him to and let's face he's never going to move past this. It's already cost him his job but at least to get past those questions would be to tell the writers. I'm here to answer every question you people have about what take place and I'll tell you exactly really what happened. What do you think about that? I don't know that I mean I. I would love for that to happen. Let's be very clear. I don't know that the benefit for for Carlos it's worth it If if one of the drugs and he said this in an introductory press conference specifically said I didn't want any job I don't need need a job. I wanted to stay in New York. Carl has very very young children. They're all right like very yes. Three kids are all very young during school in your this is where they reside the kids go to school will. So there's only two baseball jobs that he would apply for the New York Yankees and the New York mets and he's not gonna get either one of those jobs so I just don't think that at this point point it benefits the family anyway and I do think that Carlos will do what's best for his family especially having young children Buster and I know you know that you had young children at one time. It's the point that these kids have to see the paper tomorrow. They're going to be in school. They're old enough. You know and I feel like it would rehash a lot of topics. Is that right now. Maybe people are going to move on you know and and just gone from that now if he later on when the kids are a little bit older he wants to do something else. Maybe at that point but but at this point I just don't see the benefit.

"The baseball world waiting on the mets and something anything being on the status of Carlos Beltran the longer distracts on the louder the questions will get Astros and red SOx acted swiftly Beltran a little different case of course in any event a little bit more from yesterday's Today's press conference up in Boston where Red Sox principal owner John Henry explain richly all see this organization as a family that feelings operating yesterday in making making a tough decision it operates throughout the organization daily mutual partying with Alex Cora as manager chairman. Tom Warner says wasn't even a contentious. ATTENTION DISCUSS ALEX by his own admission. We agreed played a central role in what went on Houston and we all agreed that two it was wrong. Of course step down without a fight leaves the Red Sox with a gaping hole pitchers and catchers set to report for spring training and three and a half weeks so new. GM higham bloom. Bloom needs to find himself a new skin. There's no question it's an unusual time to be a doing a managerial search at the point in the winter that we are being this close to spring training it's impossible for that. Knock to be a factor. He's got some work to do same for the Astros though. It seems they have some in house candidates to replace. Aj hinch and Jeff Liu now if they want to go that route however veterans skippers John Gibbons and buck show woman reportedly interviewing for that vacancy or showalter did yesterday and gibbons is supposed to be in today we gave you the quotes from. CCA yesterday sounding off about all this on the NFL. So we do have the audio just a couple of quick ones for you commenting on. How as more information came out about the scandal? It's getting frustrating man to sit here and know that you know late in my career I probably COULDA had a title. You know maybe seventeen or eighteen But you know we got cheated out of out so you know team kind of doing something. That's not within the rules of the game with the Astros investigation complete in the punishment handed down. Should they have been forced to vacate the world series title. I had never thought what about that but maybe yeah I mean why not when people were talking about them giving up the title. You know you can't give it to the dodgers and obviously you can't give it to us and seventeen but Vacated vacated I'm you know I wouldn't be mad at that do anything for you than vacating the title on now. I'm with you on that.

The Rise and Fall of Baseball's Hottest Young Manager

"So Buster. The Red Sox and Alex Cora mutually parted ways on Tuesday. I think that's what we're calling it. After it was revealed that Cora was an integral part in the illegal sign stealing operation in Houston in two thousand seventeen when he was the astros bench coach. MLB is currently investigating the Red Sox as well to determine whether he implemented similar signs stealing in their twenty eighteen world series winning season season and now we are all awaiting to see what his punishment will be. What was your reaction to the report of his wrongdoing and his subsequent firing well? I wasn't surprised that he wound up leaving from what I understand from talking with sources that he knew as soon soon is the astros fired. Aj hinch and they fired. Jeff Luneau their general manager that his position with the red sox wasn't tenable depressing intimate set in terms. The suspensions and at the very least Alex is going to probably get a year and if they were to stack on the extra counts for the red SOx walks in two thousand eighteen at the end of that investigation. He might even get more time than that and so I think he totally understood that they're in a position where they were going to have have to consider a change. We met with Alex yesterday and everyone went into that meeting trying to answer. The question is what was in the best interest for the Boston. Red Sox Alex was professional understanding that he had made a mistake and and so after a couple of conversations. We all mutually agreed that we needed to part ways. But we do it. Alex feels like to some degree. Sorry that he's leaving on his own terms just as someone who's known for a long time and worked with them. I certainly feel that way a year ago. I think we would talk about about. Alex is being the most powerful manager in baseball and now we don't know if he's ever going to manage the big leagues again. But you worked with him when he was at. ESPN right right right. Worked with him for four years. ESPN did shows with him was around him and then after he left. You know when I would do my work on Sunday night. Baseball all or other type reporting and you talk to him or you're around the red sox and you watched how he interacted with players boy. He ascended so quickly and I can't remember someone who probably was better suited for the position of manager and saying I can't sit here today and predict that he's ever going to manage again in the major leagues seeks buster. What did baseball say that? Alex Cora actually did in Houston that he was essentially at the center of the conversation. An that had begun with Carlos Beltran and some of the players about refining. This science stealing Alex was the one according to the report who ask ask employees to install a monitor that could be used right behind the Astros dug out by the way that monitor was located. Did No more than thirty feet where. Aj hinch their manager was standing. No more than thirty feet were. Alex was doing his work bench coach during the course of the game. So basically everybody knew it was there. Everybody I've heard stories in the last forty eight hours about how members of the Astros have reached out to people though the teams comes after the athletic came out with an initial report and tried to assure peers competitors. Hey don't it wasn't that serious that that story was overblown and then when the report came out with the details the other day there is so much anger there are friendships that are fractured. Because of how some members the Astros not only did they cheat back in two thousand seventeen but in the two months that followed the athletic report. They've been lying. Did their peers about what they were doing. Well Chorus reputation like around baseball before this news. He was known as the guy who would hold things together. During a moment of crisis he took over the national team from Puerto Rico leading in the WBZ. He showed such a great way of dealing with players connecting with people at that time the Puerto Rico national team potentially had three shortstop Havi Abayas. Hi as an Francisco Lindor Carlos Correa and among baseball nerds like myself. We were all wondering like how is. How is Alex GonNa work through those Egos you know? How is he going to convince one guy to be the third baseman who got to be shortstop and one got to be the second basement any did it? And when he was the Astros Bench coach in two thousand thousand seventeen men he made such great connections with Alex Bregman at George Springer. They loved Alex Cora the the players loved Alex other people in Baseball. Absolutely love Alex. When the Red Sox officials who put in this position where they have to fire him they talked about that how much that's regard they have for him and I think that's I has been universal leading up to this whole decision? What was he like as a player at the time he was drafted by the dodgers? He was regarded as an excellent prospect but he never really developed into the consistent offensive player that the dodgers thought he was going to be. He carved out this role through a fourteen year career of being a role player but he was smart guy and was always known like Carlos. Beltran is someone who it was really good at ascertaining what the other team was doing with it signs for decades there was an accepted form of stealing signed and that would be the runner standing at second base and figuring out what the catcher signs were there with a lien or with the placement of a hand on a knee they could could convey to the hitter. What the next pitch was? And that's the reputation that he developed early on so he was signed stealing back that he was good. Good at picking up on Pitch Tipping. I'm sure as smart as Alex is. As much experience he had in baseball. He was tremendous. It picked up signs when leading off at second base and potentially relaying back to the hitter so despite that science stealing ability outscore score never really broke through as a player he retired in two thousand eleven as a career to forty three hitter but in twenty sixteen buster he returns to the Big Leagues Leagues as the Astros Bench Coach now Houston is known as extremely progressive forward thinking organization. How much were analytic Atlantic's and video? Apart of course coaching methods it was a lot in terms of what he was responsible for with defensive positioning. I've had conversations with Alex when we would talk about an infielder. Who may be wasn't that good and didn't have that much range and Alex would give me awake and say he'll be fine? We'll put them in the right place. That's part of what he excelled at when he was with the Astros putting a guy in the right spot to make a play a now the Astros under Jeff Luneau always had a rule that reporters could not talk to coaches. They're only organization baseball. That I know of that made that rule. I think in part because they wanted to protect their information. They didn't want the coaches talking about what they were doing. But I think Alex like Brent Strom their pitching coach. Aj hinch. They got a lot of information. A lot of feedback from the front office that they wound up using the culture in the organization has come under a lot of scrutiny really for months now. The commissioner statements singled out. Do you think Cora felt built enabled. Perhaps by the Astros focus on winning at all costs absolutely when you look back at the history of the Astros after Jeff Luneau took over. Boy does this seem inevitable. 'cause I mean they SP- have absolutely skirted right at the edge of of competitive propriety. All the way through when you think about what happened when Jeff took over the team. Not only did they tank. They tanked in a way that no one had ever seen before in baseball. You know in one year I think it was two thousand thousand thirteen. They cut their payroll down to the point. Where only one player on the team at the end of the year was making over a million dollars? One player I know what the commissioner said about the word tanking but I can tell you privately so many executives at that time. We're going to see what they're doing. They are absolutely they're not even pretending to. I have a representative major league product. It was clear from their actions. Then that so long as you wound up winning and you got the number one pick and and you pick Carlos Correa or you wind up with Alex Bregman. That would justify what they did. That same sort of mentality was in play during the stealing stuff

What you need to know about Astros' sign-stealing punishment

"We heard about the Astros the team that the nats played in the World Series we've heard about allegations for years of them sign stealing now it's legal to seal still signs the old fashioned way with your eyes in communicating but M. L. B. as citizens technology is illegal and they actually after the apple watch incident with the red Sox the Yankees in twenty seventeen they said they're gonna be harsh penalties so we've been waiting to see what this investigation I was in what they concluded and they came down hard on the Astros who won it all in twenty seventeen they suspended the GM and the manager the GM Jeff flow now and the manager AJ Hinch will the owner of the Astros came right down his name was crane Jim crane and he came right down its and said no one firing him now because of they were gonna be suspended for all twenty twenty so now they've just been fired they also gave the team a five million dollar fine which is the Max and will be is allowing and they took away draft picks for this year and twenty twenty five okay let's huge by the way let's shoot so it let's break this down even further into layman's terms sign ceiling meaning you're looking at what the catcher is signaling to the picture and then deducing what those calls are yeah and then telling your bowl pet your dog out rather like what to expect is that these batters what to expect it's an age old tradition to do it and it's fine as long as it's not using technology but in the way they're doing it apparently is they were watching the video feed from center field inside the dog out and then they would bang on a trash can it was so blatant so that's a blatant so that the batter could hear what the picture is likely to be it was an open secret to that they were doing it I guess and a former pitcher for then went to the eighties and he was one of four players who went on the record ends and said this is what they were doing this are doing it and so when we heard that it was a broken by the athletic in November the athletic as a sports Florida and when we heard that people went back and looked at the film and were able to look here clear as day the trash can when a breaking ball was coming you could not so is in real time that they were getting this information and making this noise and knowing a breaking ball and you know you hear that it didn't help every hitter because some have thought it was distracting and all that but it was it was illegal and they came down hard on the team no players even though is player driven this whole strategy I guess and what they found out as this was player driven scandal and and the G. the the manager AJ Hinch look the other way the GM of the teams that they didn't even know right up but but but players are not gonna be disciplined because the commissioner rob Manfred said others really no way they've they've scattered other teams and it's so such so many players so he's just going to but the penalties on the team's gonna chi chi big and then you're fine basically out as ever almost fell trainees the manager right now the Mets in the same division of the nats he was a player at the time so he's escape yeah but the manager of the red Sox's Alex Cora he was a player at the time and harsh harsh penalties are expected to go see him fair but bit so quick question so because they used video feed its aid they use technology to help them to to that's not fair but yet the league is now using their doubling with electronic umpires right there does so I I mean I don't know it just kind of seems unfair just seems like Hey so they use the video for you we use the video feed brother thing I don't know I'm trying to protect the integrity of our okay so robo arms are supposed to and they they do they do them in the minors this year robo arms they're still gonna have a human element of a an umpire behind the game I think that's actually happening and will be controversial of course because the robot will pick up nicking the bottom corner of the strike zone which a human I would not call calls will change I think that we'll get

"And that, that makes it tough on me. Feel like. Forty five years old like I'm young still. But these these guys are getting younger and speaking of young guys, we had Alex bregman here in studio during the fall last year. I he's just he's just awesome. That kid is really something else. I mean is he is he just keep the locker room light? I mean, what, what is his role on this tiny? He's, he's, he's a brash bowl bravado. Every every word you can think of about that Machiko that comes with, with great players. But he he's, he's got he's got some kind of baseball acumen. And and he loves baseball upset this before on interviews. I've never met someone who loves baseball as much as Alex bregman. And I I've been around a lot of baseball people in my life. And it's he's got some youthfulness to him yet. He's got a mature approach when it comes to prepare into eating in the batter's box. He's, you know, we're down nine to one last night. I took him out of the game in the eighth inning to give him a couple of innings off and some kind of pissed off at me. So I took an it bad away from him. So it I, I love the guy. He's, he's easy to manage, because you can push them in and you can coach them hard and, and get on. Them and, and he's gonna respond favorably, and I'll forever be grateful. That, that our careers path crew pets have crossed because he's, he's one of a kind. Well, I guess, AJ Hinch, actress manager here on the rich Eisen show on the list of people that you would have to tell the slowdown and I never thought Carlos careers masseuse would have to be that person. But is that what happened? I mean what with Carlos. And it's easy to to, you know, kinda doubt Carlos and and assume that that can't happen because I am similar to you. I've never heard that before I even think that I'm going to my next massage get one. I it's not something I ever even thought was possible when he he texted me and our trainer when, when it happened in the morning of a at giving him the day off on a Monday. And then Tuesday had written lineup. He's gonna play and I get a text mid afternoon that, that something gone wrong. We got him checked out by doctors, and he came back with, with a fractured rib. "Brel right-field back down the track at the wall. Oh, that's so fire. Towards third out into second. They're gonna call him. For interference. Went to make the grab and I believe a fan. Touched Mookie Betts. Joe west out there. Is to say that's an out because the fan interfere. So is the jumping off point. Right. You and I have looked at that replay a bunch of different ways. Amazing. Yeah. And and we see different correct? You you see the fan reaching over onto the pints. I it was it was about a three minute fifteen second review, which is one of the longest we ever see him on the field was interference. So I mean, we had the rule written out here about a fans are allowed to lean over but players if the players glove goes into the stands, basically all better off I on the second replay. I saw which is a little more from the side to me the fans hand came over the wall and the outfielders glove. Went into Mookie Betts glove went into the fans hand while it was at least over the wall. And then went in went then over the fence, the MIT and the hand, but I thought. Hands were in front of the wall not a ton. But enough it's only gonna to be in front of the wall a little bit to make the call. You know, Joe, you know, where it was made on the field. That's an interesting, you know, that in a bang bang play. Now, you got to see three minutes and fifteen seconds of replay of it. I personally thought the hand came enough over the wall to say that would be by rule say fan interference. It's fan interference. Because the the reading of the rule, basically says it doesn't matter how likely you are to make the catch, and we can get you all statistical information, it doesn't even matter if the fan made contact with his glove once it's over the wall. It's was the reaching over contact in the field of play. And I'm with you. I think there was enough there to make that call. Yeah. I here's here's the way. I saw it. I to me that was enough gray area. I wasn't sure that I could say definitively that the fan reached over whether bets was there. But in that situation, then you have to go with with the call on the field, right because that's all purpose of replied. Yeah. If if you're because he it's the same thing in the NFL if they called him out, or they called it a catch for a term that seems to generate a lot of controversy in another sport you have to have definitive video replay to overturn it. And I thought there was no gray area there. I thought no matter what they called on the field. It was going to stay because of that. Because to me, I wasn't sure that I saw the fan blowing over the wall. I couldn't really tell. But because that's what they called on the field. That's what they stuck part of the rule says no interference Shelby allow when a fielder wanna feel the reaches over the fence. And that's where some were saying, hey, he reached over the fence. So the fence the railing the rope or into the stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. So basically saying if the mid goes into the into the stands all bets are off anything can happen. However, should a spectator reach out on the Plainfield side of such fans. Railing or rope and plainly prevent the feel of from catching the ball. Then the batsman should be called out to the spectator interference. And that's what was called here because he was called out. I'm going to ignore batsman for a second. I can't believe we also didn't give you the loser game. So Sean for saying all bets are off there had to be pun intended for that one right at actually says batsman, I didn't miss pronounced you read back. Ratings a roll out over the railroad plane prevent the field of from catching the ball. Then the batsman should be called out says it right there. We know you don't make it up greatest batsmen of all time. We're Ducky Medwick. There you go. May maybe they update their vernacular. Okay. Don't blame me. I'm just reading the rule. You know, what's amazing though in all of this is I read these rules, and we parse the RAV that we debated call. That's right on the edge because replace opposed to in most cases erasing agreed just wrongdoing. That's usually what it ends up being the fact that we I know baseball's been around forever, and there's been a part of it. But the fact that we're talking about this being something affected by the fans in a way. No other major sport has heard you talk about this is insane in this setting. And it's not even the Moore's version of this. We know the Bartman thing is the hall of fame mount Rushmore version of this fan interaction. But the fact that this is something that has to happen. And I know it's early and I know it looks bad because it's a two run game. But we know how much this kind of stuff can affect the ripple effect the rest of the way a game goes when all of a sudden you've got to one's wiped off the board that early in this game. Absolutely. And manager AJ Hinch was asked about it. Obviously. After the game that he gave to very interesting comments. Here's his first. The initial reaction when asked about the interference call Asia. What did you think of the call on Jose altuve as? What what did what did I say? You know, I saw fan interference have had this a couple times. So we have as a team. And they deemed the fan reached over into the field of play and interfered with debts and Jose pays the biggest price because the trajectory of the ball was going to leave the ballpark. But we assume and and you can assume a lot with Mukhi because he's an incredible athlete. We assume he's going to make this spectacular catch jumping as high as you can into the into the crowd. I asked for a review, and obviously they're gonna give it to us. And they reviewed it and came back with the same outcome. Okay. So first of all, obviously, didn't like the call right through the process. But here's where I love what AJ Hinch because said later because everyone's going down the rabbit hole was the final score eight six and how many runs were taking off the okay AJ was asked about that. After the game. You guys lose eight to six, and that's that doesn't matter. That that it's convenient to think about it that way, but there's a lot of game left. There's a lot of action in that game. There was a no I'm not going to go there. But I. It would have been nice to tie the game at that point. But that's not. That's not the difference. That's not how the game plays. I love that. I agreed right? Listen after the after the fifth inning. It was five four. I mean, Houston had the lead the lead in this game. Again at two runs would have been nice there. But he's absolutely right. Even players when we talk about in football. When we go over this about a bad call in the third quarter in the fourth quarter. If there's game left to play. That's what every player is going to say they may feel bad about a call. But they're going to say, you know, what we still had plays left on the field to make something happen here. Another eight innings. I mean, you got a lot of time and you had the lead in this game. So, but we know the way everything changes when the score changes in football. We talk about all the time the way the game plan changes when you get down a certain amount that your strategy is altered by things. So I this has a monstrous effect, I think more. So because you've got so much game left the thing. And I'm with you guys are right. His assessment of it is right. The thing that just feels different is again, it wasn't a player. It wasn't a coach. It wasn't an official. This was fan involvement. Yeah. And again, speaking of that fan asteroids fan asteroids Astros fan, Troy Caldwell who was seen in the replays. Going for the fly ball told the SPN that the ball hit his hand that another fan named Jared actually touched bets glove called said, I never touched his glove. I can guarantee you that. But I definitely touch the ball the ball hit me right in the hand. I'm so damaged shamed. I missed it. This guy Caldwell went on to say Boston wins this series than Joe west is the MVP I'll give that to you right now. Well, stop stop that. Especially when you say another fan, actually touch pets club. Yeah. I thought he touched the glove on the other side of the fence t- to me, I thought it was the correct call. But that's the amazing thing about at close is. We're all looking at it. You think it's different? It's different. If people can see different things in laurel Yanni all over again in a major league stage. Yeah, this is where it becomes the thing about this though. This is a play that negatively affected the team that this guy roots for and yet we're not going to vilify him the way that happened to Steve Bartman because there's not years a history of that show. Shoutout to him for of taking the bull by the horns insane. Yeah. It happened. I should have just caught the damn ball. And also making Joe west the enemy because that's the other interesting part about baseball is you've got a lot of these officials, and I guess the the NBA has had this to some extent. But in major league baseball, the umpires are characters in this play. And Joe west is one that people have a lot of strong feelings about and so when you make him the enemy the way that fan did you exonerate yourself from a lot of blame. It's a heady play by dude also basically through with buddy under the let's be clear this dude touch gloves because that's the issue here that guy touch the ball has nothing to do with it. Right, right. It's it's interfering with the with the fielder by touching the glove. He's like I didn't do that. I confess he did it point with the finger. Exactly you mentioned Joe west. We obviously saw the the issue of the bad guy in angel Hernandez in the LDS between the Red Sox. And the Yankees cowboy Joe west is one of those guys who draws a lot of is to him for lack of a better term. And he was asked about it. And this was cowboy Joe west after the game, quote, the replay official said I was right. That's all he said, I have nothing that can change it. That's not exactly correct. What he said is. I don't see anything that. I can definitively overturn it. He never said you were right? Those those are two separate things Joe s spitting in his favor though, as one would having the support of the replay official should matter. That's why you've got New York involved in this and most of the major sports, but it doesn't change because for most people they're just going to read the name Joe west, and that's enough of a buzz all that aside how this game ended. I mean, we're talk about burying the lead here with it. Because it was too runs early in the game. It's a two run eight six game bottom in the ninth inning. Alex bregman is up the bases are loaded. So he can be the hero to us are two out. He committed a hero or maybe someone for the Red Sox can be the hero. And here's how the game ended the writer..

"Team Rubicon AJ Hinch with marquess decherd Luke thanks a lot with the manager of the Astros AJ Hinch. Before Alex bregman takes to this homerun? Derby what, are your expectations for him tonight you know he can get. On a roll with the best of them so I, think he's got to get. When he, was asked to do this was hell, yes so he's fired up for this he has fired, up for you know regular. Big moment he loves the ninth inning he'll soak all this this experience And, he's got, a lot of pressure on me naar clubhouse will give them a pretty hard time either way and for you. These guys you know and you look around the room and, you see. The names, and, you know, the back of the baseball cards terrific is it's been a great, spirited talk, today, just pretty humbling to be in a in a roomful Allstars was it a up call on Chris sale is you're starting pitcher among some really. "And to use davinci three straight days this is not something that he's accustomed to davinci's kind of been the guy in that firemen role where he's been a multi inning reliever right now aj hinch for whatever reason is largely using him as a one inning type of guy using him back to back and back now in a back to back to back situation and it's a different kind of roles at different kind of preparation you have to train your arm to be able to come back three straight days as opposed to maybe pitching an inning in third or two innings and then not working again for two three or four days kind of what you see the brewers doing with josh hater were josh haters worked the one back to back this year generally speaking had two days off between appearances because he is that multi inning firemen kind of guy and obviously he had a game i was yesterday actually where he struggled quite a bit they go to corey canabal to close that one out what what you really want to do with the bullpens here is you have to understand that and i i hate to use this expression because everybody uses it it really is a marathon and not a sprint you know if you've got somebody that can keep pace over a marathon but isn't a good short distance runner you really don't want to evaluate them in a sprint type of environment so what are the things that really happens a lot with bullpens is that narratives and recency bias defined bullpens one of the best examples i can give you and obviously this when it hits very close to home especially with the indians having the worst bullpen and major league baseball this is brian shaw your now brian shaw is a guy who i'm glad the indians didn't resign him because nine million a year to a guy that had his workload levels you know we pretty much haven't seen that except for with somebody like tyler clifford who over the last couple of seasons really hasn't been very good started out this year pretty good hit some bumps in the road now for the blue jays over his last few outings but the thing about this is that brian shaw was very effective overall now of course you know gave up the run.

"Aj hinch and then his his success has sort of made given him the validation he needs to to sort of go forward doing the same things now imitation obviously is the greatest form of flattery so to your point you just made like is this the new norm i mean like we're like there's a new common thread of just do you know the game not necessarily have you the whole aspect of paying your dues as now out the window i think it's it's possible that this will become more normal whether it's the norm or not remains to be seen but i do think that there is a there's definitely a trend in baseball that managers need to be at least conversant in things that normally were the domain of the front office the analytics and different statistical things and just that that merging of those two is is very apparent even though dave roberts kind of had the the coaching experience before he ended up in in in los angeles his his role is very similar to inches and you know the the the dodgers have very strong input from the front office from from andrew friedman and far hands eighty that they're both i spent a lot of time with them last year and those two guys were in his office almost every game before and after and so i think there's a lot of there's a lot of that going on where there's this this understanding that that managers had get away with just you know having the center fielder lead off in the second basement hit second you know i mean there's gotta be some there's gotta be some understanding of what guys can do and how they fit in and you know it's obviously extended to to pitching and and times through the lineup all those things have become something that that front offices expect managers to know.

"Hey thank you thanks for having me so getting right into this the whole story starts with that antidoto vote george springer and that final ball from the al cs that he had and how he's like i know our manager i know aj hinch deserves that ball and i'm sure no one else on the astros would have disagreed with them do you think part of all of this like the combination last year is that hinted achieve something that's so difficult and delicate to reach a leader where it seems the people under them want to do their jobs because they don't want to disappoint aj hinch and they don't want to let him down there doing it for him and away i think there's a lot of that at work with a team i think that all the things that they went through last year with the hurricane and with all kinds of different just the different ups and downs of the season and the fact that they kinda the the core of that team kind of grew up with aj you know th the the core of of springer and korea and how to say and they have a real bond there and and he kinda set them on the path toward winning and i think that that you're right there's a feeling that that you know he expected this of them and they learned to expect nothing less than themselves now how much of being able to create this atmosphere is sort of tied to how hinch feels about his own father and by that the story you told about how we pick the batting cage over the car because in a way he didn't want to let his father down.

"George springer had snagged thousands of baseball's out of the air through his twenty eight years most without a thought but he had never caught one that possess such power catching this ball a lazy unambitious sigh off the bat of the yankees greg bird required conscious effort as soon as it landed in springer's glove ending the american league championship series the calculus changed now what to do with it he jammed it into his pocket and started to run toward the pitcher's mound where everyone associated with the astros was about to me but this baseball bouncing with every step was the heaviest five and a quarter announces he could ever imagine this baseball carried responsibility it was tempting but hubristic to keep it for himself it would be cool to have but what had he done to deserve it chance had sent the ball his way not fate he one of twenty five had simply caught it springer ran and screamed and surveyed the aftermath victory for the most part he got what he expected jubilation relief and maybe a glint of disbelief from his teammates as they rushed out of the first base dugout like bats from cave but toward the end of the exodus springer saw aj hinch race out of the dugout a first third smile on his face it's strange how many memories that smile evoked and how quickly they arrived the way hinch manage the shredded nerves and panicked uncertainty during hurricane harvey the text messages springer in his teammates received when hinch knew they were struggling or needed a day off the quiet equanimity it's okay to fail springer says just know why you failed that sanded away the rough edges of a long season springer might not have known all the particulars how hinch is uber prospect status in high school and at stanford was overshadowed by underwhelming professional career how he almost quit and stayed home in midwest city oklahoma after his father died before he could watch hinge play a college game how his brief and bidder first managerial experience in arizona made him wonder whether he would ever get or even want another chance.
