"Just under $58,000 per token Get some more color on the pre market equity trading Bloomberg markets correspondent pretty good Pretty good looking at today Paul it is all about the new variant once again no surprise here but really the big hitter is going to be those vaccine stocks Moderna in particular this was the company that led the S&P 500 higher yesterday today it's down to the tune about 2.7% of ticker here mRNA This coming after top executives reiterated that the variants many mutations suggest new vaccines will be needed but you did have one executive say it's the mutations that have on this virus that are very surprising The CEO speaking to the FT predicting quote a material drop in the existing shots efficacy and dampened expectations that new ones could be ready soon Paul some scary stuff here And you can really see that really flowing into BioNTech shares as well to your BNT X shares are down 6 and a half percent in the pre market This has everything to do with the fact that Moderna was thought of as the essentially the premier vaccine technology mRNA tech was considered to be the best one to combat this virus and now shedding some doubts You can see that rippling throughout BioTech in particular even when it comes to those antibody drug cocktail cocktails as well Eli Lilly one of the main creators of that down 7 tenths of a percent to L LY Regeneron is another one down 2% The tickers are EG and both companies saying that they aren't as effective as they used to be on the delta variant That's just not applying on the Omni Kron variant Both companies are trying to work around at the cheese scientific officer of Regeneron those saying that the urgency has increased This is no longer a backup plan This is priority number one Once again it is that sentiment that's weighing on travel stocks broadly We gotta hit those airlines American Airlines down 1.4% for example take our AAL a similar story when it comes to those cruise lines those major volatility plays the best example here is going to be Norwegian cruise lines down to the tune of about 2% ticker NCLH Also going over into hotels and bookings companies like Marriott down about 2% as well ticker MAR or Expedia down about one and a half percent to your EXP E a similar story although not vaccine related when it comes to Boeing shares This is of course the big Dow component ticker BA down 1% in the pre market this coming after Democrats on the House transportation committee are demanding that the head of the FAA explain what steps it's taking against Boeing when it comes to really self regulating on those 7 37 flights And that's going to be a major issue And when he's talking about regulation here we have to talk about Facebook or say meta platforms formerly known as Facebook although the ticker was supposed to change tomorrow now postponed to 2022 but take her at the moment The UK's antitrust regulators saying that Facebook's parents meta platforms must sell get this jiffy I know I saw that And not get jeffy The jif search engine to address those competition concerns It's a GIF It's a GIF If it's a Jeff kind of What's your gift It's a Jeff not a GIF I don't know I don't know I don't know I'm just pretty We're looking to you Hipster in the room Has the kids that are in the know I'm going with jif I'm going with jif I'm going with omnikron Omni car omnicon I got a drink thrown at me last night dinner The British first of all they pronounce it differently so it's vegetable you know Yeah They just have their own way dude I can't Farrell can do it I can't do it And going back to aerospace engineering it was Omnicare Right And I looked up Marian Webster and the answers they cut it both ways They kind of all right so we can go You know right I don't you know all I know is Tommy crown Dead Homie crime So that's how you pronounce it Yeah okay very good Thank you so much Thank you Everyone comes in you know Jif and Army crown gift and I'm educated We need to find another hipster to speak to Let's do that with Cameron Christ right now Macro writer for Bloomberg doing all sorts of bigger thinking Cameron I noted today I went to the trading envelope screen The TE screen which was a quick way to fold in standard deviation fitting And I noticed Cameron did in the last I think four days or 5 days we had not one not two but three four standard deviation moves in ten year yield from plus two to minus two Minus two to plus two The new volatility is their Cameron isn't it Yeah I mean which is what you'd expect when you have something come out of left field that increases the uncertainty in terms of the distribution of future outcomes We don't know how all of this is going to play out over the next few months There is a scenario where things are actually better than they otherwise would have been at this turned out to be a really mild case that everyone gets and it turns into a cold But there's also a scenario where it's worse than we thought things will be So if you will sort of the cone of potential distributions has broadened significantly and so it's natural that the cone in terms of the amplitude of market moves also broadens significantly Are we on hedged Because what you do when you have no volatility is you get lazy and you don't hedge as a general statement Cameron is a global Wall Street lesser hedged Well it's hard to say because.

Is America Heading for Civil War?

"Yeah, so the question is, are we heading towards a Civil War? Dennis has been prolific on this and prophetic because he said it earlier out loud. We're already living through. And it's just a matter of time before I think we really kind of it catches up to the what is going to happen is going to catch up with our living through, which is when I go to San Francisco, I have nothing in common with the people there. And it's mutual, by the way. Sarah Silverman who calls herself the comedian came out and she said, why are we living in the country with these unvaccinated people? I don't want to live in a country. Why don't they have their own country, and we have our own country. And exactly, and what I just heard from so many people, people just said, yeah, let's do it. And right. And so I just want you to kind of just absorb what has happened in the room here. You have a bunch of people who love this flag. That flag's not going to be around if those of you that just clapped, get what you want. I'm being serious. You just clapped for secession. And so that's a serious thing. That this room's enthusiastic about separating. We're already there, folks. This idea of like, oh, we're divided like you got one side that's demanding the severance and the other side that can't wait for it. And so and you're already seeing it through kind of the slow motion secession that's happening on Southwest Airlines or American Airlines of people that move to other states because they feel they don't represent them. And so who knows how this is going to end up? It could end up in physical confrontation. I think the regime is trying to provoke physical confrontation. I think they want us to get physical, which is why at every event on that and anyone asks me would literally someone ask me rather bluntly and suspiciously bluntly, when do we get the guns? I denounced him, and I said, that's exactly what the power grabbers want you to do. That will give them the Patriot Act two to be able to really seize control over you right now. It's that what they don't want you to do is keep on showing up to school board meetings and be patient and have self control and take back power through peaceful means. That's what they're really

Democrats Plan to Swing Back Aggressively at Republicans on Critical Race Theory Claims

"Democrat strategists say the party should hit back harder against GOP critical race theory claims. On a political level, it's a real threat one strategy is insider, but strategists say they shouldn't lose sight of economic issues at the top priority. Okay, a little bit of back and forth even in the header in the subhead. They called it a racist dog whistle and a lie. But those messages haven't helped Democrats tamp down on the uproar Republicans are fueling over critical race theory. Now a misuse catch all term for teaching on race and diversity in K through 12 schools that's firing up protests at school board meetings around the country. In Virginia, Republican governor elect Glenn young exploited the term. Interesting word choice exploited. Exploited the term pledged to ban it and classrooms on his first day as governor, and even though critical race theory in academic approach to examining racial bias, that's very nice of an academic approach to it's white racism. It's anti white racism, pure and simple. It's resegregation. It's backwards. It's the most regressive ideology that you will ever encounter. It's cultural Marxism, but under the guise of racialism of racial justice. Okay? That we're justice. It's the word that left claims. And they don't have any idea of who gets to define what justice is. It's basically their topic du jour, their morality du jour that continually moves. It's not rooted in anything eternal. It's not rooted in any type of faith. Tradition that is eternal or long-lasting that has tradition behind it. It's whatever they think justices that day, but they'll use the term, and then you are the person that they're going to contend with to get the justice that they deserve. You conservative, you Republican, you racist, parents all across the nation? So they go and say that it's just CRT is just examining our history of racial bias and is most often taught in law schools. Well, that was true. Until George Floyd and Floyd a palooza. Democrat strategists say the party should hit back harder against divisive GOP claims, while not losing sight of the priority of voters in the economy. Okay, at least they want to talk about the economy that they're running into the ground. On a political level, it's a real threat that has allowed Republicans to claw back the inroads, the Democrats have made in the suburbs over the last couple of election cycles that Jim Manley, a longtime aid former Senate minority leader Harry Reid. Democrats haven't yet pushed back on this issue enough, but the good news is the party's response is effective. They just need to make the case

Federal Investigators Launch Civil Rights Probe Into Southlake, Texas Schools

"I want to pivot here to a story that is, it's really, it's a massive story. It's out of southlake, Texas, federal investigators, this per NBC News launched civil rights probe into southlake, Texas schools. Now you will remember that south Lake became one of the hotbeds in this CRT school board battle that has been raging across the country with concerned parents. Now yesterday Charlie did an amazing job covering memo gate as we are thus dubbing it. Where it is now become clear that despite Merrick Garland's claims that there was no FBI, you know, surveilling of parents, that is indeed the case, a whistleblower has come forth. Some of our favorite representatives like Jim Jordan out of Ohio have been leading on this issue, actually, we have Jim Jordan's going to be joining the show here soon for a long form discussion here shortly. It's also got a great book out, recommend everybody checking it out. So Jim Jordan's been out front on memo gate. Now, we find out that there's something brewing. And I don't love the direction. There's two simultaneous concurrent streams that are running counter to what we all thought we learned after Virginia. After even New Jersey was too close to call an election night. After Republicans swept races all across the country. Even in Seattle. What were the messages? That we thought we learned? Well, that CRT is dumb, and that parents don't like it, and that it's a losing issue for Democrats. And that Republicans get rewarded when they fight things like CRT. When they don't take a neutral stance in the public square, but fight it with everything they've got and they say, listen, I'm going to exercise state power and not cop out on some, you know, we believe in small government, which we do, but these are not mutually exclusive things. The government as constituted in the United States of America is designed fundamentally to protect the rights of its citizens. And to predict the right to protect the rights of parents. And what conservatives too often do is they hide behind that as a excuse to do nothing

There is news today that osha has now at least temporarily sidelined this plan of vax mandates, pending circuit court, judgments that have fully put a stop to it, at least for the time being. So we're going to keep monitoring that. Dave Morgan, thank you so much for joining us, captain sherry walker. Thank you so much for joining us. Tell us a little bit about what you guys have been going through the floor is yours. I've got some tape, by the way, that we can play at some point in the segment of the CEO of United. I know you're not speaking on behalf of United here, but I do have, I think it's partner to what we're discussing. So I do want to get to that, but tell us what you've been going through. Tell us a little bit about your background. Are you guys getting paid right now? I went on unpaid leave a week ago on Friday. I'm a pilot for United Airlines. I was hired in continental airlines in 1998, so I've been here 23 and a half years. We've spent many years out in the island of Guam for Micronesia and three years ago, just before the pandemic, we moved from Guam to the great state of Arizona, and I'm on a fly 7 87 out of San Francisco. Pandemic came down the pipe and we pressed on. We are the front lines that we're willing to do whatever it took. And with a really can do cooperative spirit of let's get through this because I was also a pilot during 9 11. I remember that vividly. We worked through that. And then suddenly, on the back side of this, here comes this vaccine mandate. And those of us who pressed on and made the wheels turn airplanes fly, the people who were able to fly for point a to we were there to get them there. And all of a sudden, Scott Kirby says, we're not safe anymore. You're done. So as of last Friday, I've been placed on unpaid leave, and they've basically cut my cord. I have no insurance, no benefits. I can't retire. I have no access to anything. They have shut me down and to make it worse. I can't pass travel. I can't even jump seat on other airline jump seats. So I'm scrambling right now to see what I'm going to do with insurance. I have three boys, 12, 16 and

United Airlines Rolls Out New Plan to Diversify the Cockpit

"Segregation was wrong in the 1950s. And segregating children in the Georgia public schools, which is what's happening right now is wrong again. And it goes even further than that. Whether it's not just graduation ceremonies, it's not just dormitories, but also I'll give you another example. United Airlines has come out and they have said that they are going to be hiring pilots based primarily on based on the color of someone's skin. Now, I don't know about you. When I'm flying in an airplane, I couldn't care less about the skin color of the pilot. I care can you land the plane? And this emphasis on diversity for diversity's sake comes with a price. And when you elevate diversity over competency to try and fit some sort of esoteric political agenda, then there will be a price to pay

American Airlines Cancels More Than 1,500 Flights Since Friday Amid Staffing Issues, Weather

"American Airlines canceled over 1500 flights over the Halloween weekend blaming weather woes, wink wink and staffing issues. I always love it when these airlines blame weather for staffing problems, and then the people who live in the communities where the weather is, they will run that bad here. That reminds me of the time that Hillary fainted in Lower Manhattan remember when she popped out of her shoe and they threw her in a van and wouldn't take her to the hospital when she was running for president. Hi, I'm glad she's well. But she had a bad morning and I was in New York City just about a mile away. And the mainstream media rushed to her defense. They said, oh, it was so it was so hot. Oh, it was hot. She had heat exhaustion. It was this cool crisp, shattering morning in New York. I was there. It wasn't hot. But the mainstream media figures, you know, the beast figures well, if we lie, people aren't gonna be around. They don't know. They're not there. We'll tell them it's hot. So that's a little bit like Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, canceling all these flights. Oh, it's windy in Dallas. They got some wind conditions. In Dallas Fort Worth, I got a news flash. It's windy a lot at Dow in Dallas Fort Worth. They in canceling 1500

What Kind of America Do You Want to Live In?

"On. Our country has fallen apart. It is an arguable our country's fallen apart. We got shipping containers. Hey, at least Biden got a boat parade, okay? He's got shipping containers off the coast of California, finally got a boat parade. It's terrific. Inflation is setting and the border is wide open my goodness. What do I even start? We're borrowing $5 trillion a year. We got all sorts of problems, right? The cost of heating your home in Chicago is going to nearly double over the winter, south as airlines as a complete mess. It's like a third world country now trying to get on an airplane. Not if you notice that recently. And yeah, we got serious problems. But I encourage all of you to take a step back and say, what kind of country do I want to live in? What kind of America do I want to participate in? And that script has not yet been written. And that's the optimistic point for everyone here in this audience. It is on us. Our generation. And I want all of a sudden, I want to live through an American revival and resurgence. I want to make the naysayers wrong. I want to prove the ruling class to be mistaken by thinking that the cake is baked that there will be an equal and opposite reaction of decent patriotic American people and young people. So, you know what? I'm not going to put up with this. That I want to love my country again. I don't want to organize people based on the color of their skin. I don't want to segregate people. I want to live in a country that respects natural rights. I believe in the natural law and the natural law giver. And I believe church is essential. I want a country with borders. I want to people that go to D.C. that are not completely and totally corrupt, which would be great. And that's the type of country I want to live in. And guess what, we can still make

"Todd dot com. Start supporting the good guys and stop taking out loans of people that hate you and hit your values. The flight cancellations continue for southwest airlines. Yet they're saying there's nothing wrong here. It's the weather. It's the su-nam even though the weather's not affecting other airlines three hundred and forty eight flights canceled monday with a further three hundred and three delayed beyond that. And we have said on this program. Good luck trying to mandate the vaccine because running airlines a very fickle business. It's a very specific skill. Set that takes a lot of training pilots and flight attendants and you start to get five ten fifteen percent labour disruptions. What are you gonna do. southwest will. They're denying they even have a problem. You read some of these articles and how the regime media has refused to even just pick up the phone and do some investigative journalism has been so telling how the media is owned by the pharmaceutical companies. Here's what's really going on here before. I play this next tape here. What's really happening and we're gonna play cut. Three of the full tape is that they do not want this to set off a chain reaction of strikes and outs happening every major company across the country. So the media is intervening and trying. To prevent a worker's rights revolution happening around the vaccine mandate especially going in to the busy christmas season. They don't want this to happen at amazon walmart. So the media is trying to clamp this down there trying to suppress this story. We know what's going on. I've heard from south west employees. Personally they say of course. "If i if you got cancelled by spirit. It might be several days before you were going to get to your destination. And that was true at all. Airlines airlines doing to fix the things that caused delays and cancellations all summer. And what's the outlook for airfares. This fall will ask. Wsj middle c. Columnist scott mccartney after the break c. Three ai software enables organizations to use artificial intelligence at enterprise scale solving previously unsolvable business problems. Learn more at c. three. I this is enterprise. Ai for airlines. The summer of twenty twenty one was unlike any other. After american summer vacations were effectively cancelled by lockdowns last year. Airlines went into high gear to meet pent-up passenger demand this year. Wfan middle c. Columnist scott mccartney has been tracking their progress and what it means for passengers going forward and he joins me now. Scott thanks for coming on the show. Good to be with you. Jr so scott. This summer of twenty twenty one was supposed to be the airline's grand return to the world. Stage how they do they stumbled and bumbled. They didn't do well. It was a really rough summer for for travellers. Lot of delays a lot of cancellations of people stranded at airports just Painful all around where the number of delayed flights and canceled flights unusually high it was for particular airlines Some airlines did very well so you know. In some cases that that balanced out delta had a very low rate of cancellations even for delta on the last several years has been very good but american airlines cancelled. Eleven times as many flights as delta did And americans rate wasn't as bad as as some others Southwest really had a hike cancellation rate spirit. Had a complete meltdown in in august where they cancelled thousand flights. In in one week and so there were some airlines with very high cancellation rates Just as as an example if an airline cancels one percent of its flights that's pretty typical and in spirits case. They cancelled almost six percent of their flights. So it gives you an idea of how different it was the summer. And what were some of the reasons. For all the cancellations and delays well many reasons airlines blame staffing situations that In many cases caught them by surprise in some cases it was their own pilots and flight attendants not wanting to come back from leave as quickly as the airline thought they were gonna come back So they ran into shortages They ran into problems. Retraining crews So that they were good to go back out working and that that tripped up Some airlines and led to cancellations but the the labor issues were much broader. As we've seen in other industries it can be agents at the airport. It may be wheelchair pushers maybe people to drive the fuelling truck or the catering truck. There were those kinds of shortages. That happened at the airport. Not in in the error enforced Airlines to really trim back schedules. But i think the broader issue here was some airlines were very aggressive about their schedule and spirit for example head had as many flights As they had in the summer of two thousand nineteen Actually if a few more flights other airlines delta hawaiian united all of which did pretty well with operations there still more than twenty percent smaller than they were in the summer of two thousand nineteen so Allegiant had fourteen percent more flights than they ended in two thousand nineteen and even southwest which was only Twelve thirteen percent smaller than two thousand. Nineteen they were very aggressive with their schedule. And that's what trip them up. They didn't have spare airplanes and didn't have spare cruise. They really overshot in terms of what they thought they could do this summer. And that led to really disruptive operation you mentioned people stranded at airports. Seems like this wasn't especially rough season for travelers Yeah i think it was. I think in for just that reason. The lack of reserves The lack of spare airplanes So when when things went wrong they really went wrong. If if you got cancelled by spirit it might be several days before you were going to get to your destination and that was true at all. Airlines talked to a guy at american who had a six day honeymoon in hawaii and the first airplane. They got on in dallas for the flight to honolulu Had a mechanical problem. They put him on another airplane. That had a mechanical problem. They ended up canceling In pretty soon. They've lost one of their six days of honeymoon. And you know that that has an impact on people. I think anytime air transportation is not really reliable. And that certainly was the case at some airlines this summer. It has a huge impact on people in terms of stress in terms of not getting to where they need to be in terms of throwing them for a loop in terms of Scrambling to find a hotel room in a city where you never thought you would be. So what are the airlines trying to do to reduce cancelled flights and delays going forward. Well they've pared back their schedules quite a bit realizing that the labor shortages weren't gonna instantly go away and that's okay in the fall in particular Because travel has really slowed down with the delta variant So they basically have a period when they can regroup and get things in much better shape. I think it's prompting a reexamination of what they can do. This holiday season when people presumably will wanna travel again and and so it's going to be interesting to see if staffing gets more aligned with reality here and a lot of the problems that we saw this summer can be avoided this winter now. We got inflation numbers this week. That showed the cost of airfare. Actually came down in august. Is that trend likely to continue We'll sure their whole lot more. Empty seats And so i have come down significantly in in the fall. The the real factor for the fall is that Business travelers aren't coming back The way airlines anticipated because the delta variant companies aren't reopening in that kind of thing so traditionally people wanna go on vacation in the summer. They wanna go on business trips in the fall and business fares usually bolster airlines in the fall That's just not happening this year. So yeah you can find some great bargains in the fall if he want to travel. The problem is A lot of people aren't wanting to travel or so airfares aside. I mean all this turbulence and the travel industry. It sounds like for passengers. Patience is a virtue. Yes you definitely had to pack your patience this summer. I think there are other factors takes longer to check in for international flights because there are questions of kovic tests verification kovic vaccination verification for some countries it takes longer to You know we've seen huge long waits for forgetting help on the phone and some of that of airline making all the schedule changes that we've seen people end up calling because new flights they're assigned aren't acceptable or they're trying to use a complicated voucher. Credit leftover from a pandemic cancelation. They're just a travel has changed. And i think i think some of these frustrations are going to last for a while so packing your patients. That's not just a a summer thing. I think that's going to be with us for some time to come all right. That's wall street journal. Middle c. columnists got mccartney. Thanks so much for being with us. Thanks for having me hair. And that's your money briefing. Im jr waylon for the wall street journal..

"Many sectors of the aviation world when you take when you're not when you stop looking at airline traffic which rebounded but for a while was hurting a lot of aspects of aviation. Were doing quite well actually. In in the in aviation general aviation was going up a home built. Were going up. People going back to get certify certificates or to get you know they were rusty going back to generally and many other like private aviation have actually fared quite well and You were affected because of a supply chain issue. So you're damned if you do damned if you don't like otherwise. No initially marking was shut out of amazon marketplace. Because they were just gonna focus on medical supplies but then when that resolved in the market started picking up with everything else. People who wanted to buy your product couldn't because you were not available able able to get your own supplies. Would you did just ride it out. Did you invest in other products. What did you do your time. We just kind of had to write it out. So i had to wait i. It's funny like i. Had shipments coming over from china that were sitting in the port in california for. I think three months because everyone else had the same problem. When transportation and supplies were done from china the richest massive backlog of things waiting to get shipped out so we spend a lot of that time kind of reinvesting and refocusing actually making some new product lines. So because a lot of people weren't flying this past year or not able to you know working on their own aircraft and a lot of customers are asking me about Ways to monitor traffic just from their living room. So we've actually. We're doing a pie. Where unit now too. Which is kind of. Can you tell us what is it people that don't know i'm so if you've heard of flight aware the network where you can kind of just put it in a flight number. See their track where they're going airspeed altitude all that stuff. So that's a global network. But that's all fed by receivers that are people have from around the world so pie whereas a project that uses raspberry pi and software.

"Part after you get through security and you're in the waiting area because it's such a small airport and avello holds the the aircraft. Some thirty seven holds one hundred eighty nine passengers. They were booked to one hundred. Seventy eight on this flight and the waiting room really isn't designed for that. Many people said th there were certainly a lot of people standing around. We were packed tightly in the in the room. That bit was kind of uncomfortable. So i don't know how they're going to solve having so many people. If there is another flight going out at the same time it really would have been miserable. There is a point before we started boarding where the tsa actually stopped screening people because there was no more room in the waiting area once i started boarding than they let the the rest of the the flight go through screaming to to get in. You know that's something that Many passengers would blame on the airline. But it's not an airline problem. That's an airport operations problem. And if if passenger service into eureka picks up airport will. I can't remember what the name of the airport but that airport will need to look at it services and maybe expand to accommodate more passengers. Yeah you say that it's not the airline's responsibility. But yet i know avella's planning on expanding into new haven connecticut and if i remember correctly they're investing something like one point. Four million dollars in terminal expansion for that so they are making an investment upgrading. The passenger facilities. So i don't know exactly how that works but at least in connecticut they're getting money from the airline to expand. I think that has something to do with the fact that new haven connecticut. That's going to be an avello hub. It's going to be the primary airport on the east bronx. So avello needs to set that up as their hub. Just like they probably had to spend more money in la to set things up for themselves. No they there. Were no changes made to the burbank. Airport at all must have been big enough to accommodate them. I think with the reduction in service from the other airlines. Yeah they just took over a united gate. And i don't know who's check in counters. They took over. But yeah there's there's absolutely no additional work done at burbank. So other than the The check in and and wait at the airport because it was so crowded any other issues. Anything else happened on the way back now and onboard flight service was great. They still handed out the bottle water lorna dunes and Sanitizing wipe in talking with a flight crew. They said that in a little bit. They're going to start to offer a beverage service and possibly have meals for sale so kind of looking forward to that the next time i fly him if they indeed start offering food for purchase. That'll be that'll be interesting. Check out as well but besides these little operational delays again. It's just so nice flying on them. They are very reasonable rates. The staff is so incredibly. Courteous i i just wish they could work on their on time. Performance and delivery of luggage. Will you know. I think you're going to have something to look forward to. I can't imagine they won't improve. Gotta remember the airlines. Less than six months old now so It's just a question of learning what the issues are and getting better and it sounds like they may become one of your favorites. Yeah they Again i i want to love them. I really do Their attitude their spirit. The product that they're delivering is a guess. I can't say it's really good but it's it's ripe with potential. It's all about the attitude that makes it good. You know even when you have a bad situation if you've got people handling it well with the right attitude and approaching you correctly with a smile on their face saying yes we know it sucks but we're all yeah now and i'm really looking forward to the next flight and who knows maybe i'll go to grand junction or head out to montana utah or some other place and you know. Hopefully i'll. i'll see some of the same flight attendants and get some familiar faces there and the i'm really looking forward to fly in on them again. Well when you do. Let's get together and talk about it brian. It's always great talking with you. And i wish you many more happy miles on velo airlines. Thank you very much. Mike have a great day and else remember fly safely and from here in portland maine. This is your main man mica signing off while that was fun. Yeah great conversation. I love. I love the idea of Bringing a little gift or something for the flight attendant says the kind of thing where i hear that and i think wow you know. I'm gonna do that next time and then i completely forget about it and i've never heard of that before. He said a. Thank you card. So i mean it sounds like it. Was you know a car of some kind. Yeah this yes. He started doing that a couple of years ago. I can't remember I don't know if he ever. I don't know if he hand writes them or what he does. But i mean that kind of goes back to that earlier story. We had about why the flight attendants were so irritated that the pilots were getting big pay and they weren't getting a did anything Yeah well i was gonna. I didn't can. I say diddley diddley. Oh okay because six good thing. I didn't say crap but you know it It again because the the cabin is has turned into the battleground It's the front line and it's just not fair that the the flight attendants take all the grief from the y- ridiculous passengers that get in the and the pilots pretty much get off scot-free couple of different Thoughts about this first of his guys. We might as well just to make this arapain. Wrap in you know in this show now because i i'm thinking the mike bryan travel show or you know i don't know if they'll call it Mica bourdain or something like that. It's great travel show. I certainly enjoyed it I love Eureka it's very much. Brian described and it wasn't just the pandemic that has you know kind of heard it economically if you go back probably twenty closer to thirty years. It was the decline of the lumber industry. I mean that that area really. was booming Earlier in the in the century and at the center of the prior prior century and you see some beautiful old victorian homes that were built off of lumber money and it's spectacular fund little town And it's Anyway i would encourage anybody to go to go visit there and yes the the airport which serves two towns on its north of town. I been to and it's really small. But think about traditionally who's flown in there traditionally. It was twenty turboprops so of course the turtle the terminal was built for that not built for seven thirty seven. So no surprise there. I thought it was pretty interesting. This concept of charging more for carry on than than checked luggage I've had this carry on soapbox for for a long time even had an opportunity to stand on it and several years but I hate carry on with a passion My i think the framers should make the overhead bins at most half the size that they are now then. Airlines should charge more. I always check my stuff. You know other than the little tiny bag with my maybe my camera and the medications sort of the essentials. I just don't like schlepping all my stuff through airports. I'd much rather they're being efficient. You know system of checked luggage which there isn't but that's the part they should work. Actually there is a very efficient system. And i think that's what avella was using. I think that was because of the you know that caused the forty five minute delay that brian was talking about. I think what they found is. It's just more cost effective. Take all those bags. Fedex them up to eureka. And they're just waiting for the fedex truck to get there with luggage. Yeah that's great. I have not seen any evidence of anybody seriously. Tackling the the problem of how long it takes to retrieve your checked luggage. I mean anytime you gotta a process. That hasn't been seriously looked at you. Know you can cut it at least in half at least in half easily and a lot more if you try if you try hard but no one seems to address that so we just make it easier and easier for people to bring all their stuff on the plane with them. I hate it. It's it's my biggest criticism of air travel actually especially at airlines. Take south west. That doesn't even charge for A.

"Just weren't any people around very strange. What what was the check in process. Like down in la. It was fine We got there a little bit early because we just didn't know how things were going to be in of course with l. a. traffic all of the staffs and not only the the people working the ticket counter the checking counter the flight attendants. Everyone has such a happy positive attitude. And that's one of the things that i really really appreciate about is just how nice everyone is. Even if sometimes are not as efficient as they could be there. Just phenomenally. Nice and pleasant now. It's a small operation. And i suspect they don't have an incredible number of passengers yet. Did you recognize anybody. who's working. did anybody recognize you. yes. I did not recognize any passengers but two of the flight attendants that served me going to. Eureka also served me on the flight to santa rosa which was kind of fun. Because i think if you remember a handout gifts to flight attendants every time i travel so when i first went to santa rosa gave the flight cruiser their little. Thank you card or greeting card Whatever i gave out that trip and then this trip did the same thing. And i actually recognized one of the flight attendants from the first trip. The other one recognized me and they were just so appreciative. And so so thankful just real quick as as an aside for the flight attendants most of them are like i said brand new to the industry and there was the lead flight attendant on the flight up to eureka. Who's actually an unemployed actor. And he said that he wanted to see the world and he thought working for an airline was a great way to do that so he applied for avello when he first saw the job. Ad e said the hiring process took about a month and a half from when he first submitted his application to getting the job offer and then he went to florida for weeks worth of light attendant training and he was in the very first graduating class. He was so phenomenally. Pleased that he now has seniority. Who the airline again is one of the very first flight attendant so just sort of fund and amazing how people get to where they are in the airline industry you know. I think it's wonderful that you hand out gifts to flight attendants i do that too because a flight attendants work is so so difficult and is often so unappreciated and they're dealing with so many different things going on. Especially i'm especially recently. Yeah some of the crazy passengers and again i. They do work incredibly hard and and so i. I encourage people to appreciate your flight attendant one way or another even if it's just a smile on a thank you absolutely and and and as i've always said it's their job to save my ass not kiss it so i figured a little gift might insure them looking out for me a little bit more if anything were to happen. So you're you're up in eureka couple of days and i'm assuming good time up there. Yeah absolutely highly recommend anyone that wants to go see giant redwoods and hanging out in nature tons of campgrounds. Lots of very friendly people it was it was really good. It was kind of sad to see that. I think like many tourist destinations The colonel virus shutdown has hit the local economy fairly hard so there were some businesses. That didn't make it or were closed or had reduced ours. But everyone that i met all the shopowners. I went in and talked with word so looking forward to opening up of a state and the country and looking forward to welcoming the tourists again while while the airplane geeks is not exactly a travel show. Let's just talk about travel for a little bit. There's been so much. Talk about difficulty with hotels or airbnb and rental cars. Did you experience any trouble with that. While you were up there now absolutely none eureka's known for its high end properties. So he stayed at a hilton property. A hampton in which i would consider on their lower end side more budget friendly and again the staff was great. They're just super happy They were probably at twenty five percent capacity. I wasn't expecting that they were going to do room cleaning service but they did which was a really special tree because other hotels i've stayed at during cova they've they've discontinued service and it's only been on request but they're they just did it automatically They did not have the breakfast service the way they normally do but they did provide boxed breakfasts and had a bagel and cream cheese and yogurt. Either an while one day was an apple. The other day it was an orange says Quite nice and it was. It was all good now. Avello is known as a as a low cost carrier. Do you mind saying what did you pay for that trip. So they paid The flight to santa rosa was part of their promotional. pricing wary. Paid nineteen dollars for that. This flight to eureka was twenty nine dollars so stove very affordable and. That was each way. So you kidding yeah. It was ten dollars twenty nine dollars. How can they charge that much. That's just crazy that well. They have the same business model. That southwest has they have the first couple of seats at the ultra discounted price and as they sell out through the different fair basis. They they raise the price. But i looked it up that morning. What it would have cost had. I bought the ticket that day and it would have been one hundred nineteen dollars. I looked on the united web site because he needed flies there as well and the united price was two hundred forty nine dollars so it was still a huge difference between what you'd pay on united versus what you'd pay on avello even at one hundred nineteen dollars. That's a great deal. That's really fabulous. Yeah so he returned and you got to the rica airport. What happened on return. Check in the check in process was really smooth being a small airport. It was really really nice because you really don't have a weight at tsa. They had a fantastic observation deck. That's open to the public. So and so. That's one the non secure side of security so you walk up a set of stairs and they have a really nice world war two memorial there with recognition of the local citizens that that served during world war two and an observation deck that overlooked the runway which was kinda nice. Another need thing that they have. I remember years ago. Portland airport had the runway pattern as the carpet. Pattern in the terminal building will here in eureka arcada airport. They have the a scaled down version of the runways inlaid in linoleum. Which was i thought. Super cool so i grabbed a photo of that and Maybe maxwell put that in the in the show notes so is kind of kind of fun for that the unfortunate part after you get through security and you're in the waiting area because it's such a small airport and avello holds the the aircraft. Some thirty seven holds one hundred eighty nine passengers. They were booked to one hundred. Seventy eight on this flight and the waiting room really isn't designed for that. Many.

"I think that'll probably work out. Well for them as a hub. They can capture a lot of the the north l. a. market from there. Obviously people that live you know. Lax and south or not going to drive to to burbank. But i think the challenge is for any of these airlines that tried to do point to point services you know. Some of the routes are thin. There's just not that much demanded. The timing is is difficult. Also you know we got travel which is declining now because of the delta variant. We're about to head into the fall. Season where seasonally. All traffic goes down in september in these routes were supposed to start in september. So i think it's kind of a double whammy in you know. These routes may work out for them in the future but apparently they're just not sustainable right now. Well as it turns out Brian coleman flu avello in that Too distant past here we had heard one trip report from him On on that experience but we have another one. He had a conversation with mica on his flight. So we can listen to brian in mica right now. So we're back at your maine man. Mike and i'm speaking to your favorite former associate producer and now contributing editor brian brian. It's good to talk to you again and you have another trip report for us. It sounds like from what i hear. You were back with avello airlines again. You liked it so much. First time you went back for a second trip. I did and avello is the airline that i want to love and fly with them more but i still think they have some growing pains that they're working through and they're not quite there to take the top spot of united as my carrier of choice. Well and united is only a carrier of choice because you have so many miles on them not for the great outstanding wonderful service so there are many opportunities still there are to a bunch of interesting places that many of them that i've never been to. Which kind of leads us into the strip. This time you took a trip with a group of people and you flew up to way up in northern california. Where do you go. And what brought you. There went to eureka california and went there with the neighbors simply to have someplace to go to. In california we have loosened the kovic restrictions and the neighbor was comfortable in travelling by air and wanted to go someplace and i suggested we take a flight on avello since eight had a relatively positive experience a first time in they were game for it so off. We flew now. Eureka is so far north in california. You're practically in oregon and it's near The sequoia national forest is not it is and that was one of the things. I was kind of fun to do. Once we got to eureka. We did a little day trip. And one on a hike and i was able to see the third largest tree in california and it's about fifty feet in circumference so is quite old little over. They they estimated to be at twenty five hundred years old. Wow that must've been fascinating. Sounds great so what was different about this trip. I it was a bunch of you. Did you Last time you were up back this time you were spending some time up there. Did you bring luggage along. did you carry it on. did you check it. How was the service. There's an awful lot unpack there. So yes yes because they. We actually wanted to see the the countryside we flip on wednesday. They did not have service on thursday so we flew back on friday so had to check a suitcase. The ground operations in burbank. There's really starting to get their act together now. They've had a couple of months of experience. And i wish i could say that. Were true in eureka. But it's not. And i think because they only have flight every other day they're using contract workers and things were tad bit slow before we go any further with that. Let's talk about checking luggage for the first time mentioned it last time we spoke up but when you check luggage avello. They're one of the airlines. Maybe the only airline that i know of anyway that i think does it right. They charge more for a carry on than they do for check bag because it allows them to turn the plane around faster. Is that correct. Well the certainly charge more. If it doesn't seem like a a nabil's them to turn around the plane. Any faster again probably growing pains. They have an awful lot of employees. That are brand new to the aviation industry and i think that's hurting their operational performance. So just about every flight. I was on a with them has been delayed and i think a lot of it has to do with just this inexperience again. It's the airline that i want to love. But they're not quite there yet but yeah they charge ten dollars to check a bag and thirty five dollars to carry it on. Except i also wasn't able to figure out how they know if you've paid to carry on the bag because i didn't notice any marketing on the boarding pass and no one was really checking but the overhead bins. Were completely open. And if you wanted to take your backpack and pulling the overhead bin knowing questioned it so it was very bizarre. I i need to dig deeper and figure out how exactly they police the carry on bags or if it's just on the honor system. That's amazing. i'm very. I'm quite surprised that they don't have some sort of system in place at least none that you're aware of and yeah we'll have to find out. This may sound. this may be of the first avello. Heck yes yeah you could save your ten dollars by sneaking your carry on board but i think if enough people do it though the lend up wising up to that getting back to in eureka. It took them a good ten fifteen minutes to get the air stairs up to the plane so because the secondary airport very small airport. They don't have jet ways so they needed to get the stairs up there that took quite some time and then after we deplaned it took another forty five minutes to get the luggage to baggage claim that keep in mind. There's only one carousel and it's about of fifty yard. Walk from the airplane to the baggage carousel to the terminal. So i don't understand why it took so long except there just weren't any contract workers to unload the plane and as a result because we couldn't get our bags off the plane it also delayed the return flight from eureka burbank so they did delayed departure as a result of. This can't believe that sounds. That's wild maybe maybe people didn't show up to work. Maybe they weren't ready for the plane to arrive now. Avila fly seven thirty sevens right and they must have been turned on the ap was to get must have been warm up there. The outside temperature wasn't bad but yeah they had the running. The air conditioner was on so was quite pleasant. There just weren't any people around very strange. What what was the check in process. Like down in la. It was fine We got there a little bit early because.

"That dan webpage guy around from another airline A bet he could make a great deal more sense out of this but it. It's gotta be just absolute chaos. These people so let me relate My most recent flight which was on sunday night. Flying back from denver to the san jose. First thing i saw. Tsa security lines. That were longer than i have ever seen in my life at any time any airport anywhere in the world it was studying. This was in the Let me think the east term. I think anyway there are two different lines. The north's security lines south security lines About three years ago. I went ahead and signed up for pre. Which is tsa's kind of expedited screen process if you jump through a number of hoops and have a personal interview and things. Like that. and i was so grateful. I had that because the lines looked like they. I mean they just kept wrapping around the building. It would it literally took from the front of the line a couple of minutes to get to the back of the line. And that's after you get by the you know. Pass the mazes you get by the mazes with most of the people pretty fast but then they were just lined up all around the terminal. So i don't know what was going on with the tsa. The pre line was shut down at the north security areas. I thought wow. This is worth a walk to the south security area. Fortunately pre was open there and again it was probably the longest pre line that i've ever seen but it was probably five minutes instead of what looked like an hour to get through the the other line so that was kind of the crazy. Start to the whole thing. I'll question is is it. Volume is up or is the fact that the tsa is able to handle the volume due to staffing. Why think volume is actually down. I saw a separate item from. Tsa sometime in the last week or two that said You know a number of passengers being screened was as low as it's been now since i think may so there has been a drop in airline passengers but it sounds like they were having staffing difficulties that particular night and probably because it was a sunday night. It was you know peak volume but that was that was pretty amazing I then got onto my flight. And i was flying southwest The outbound flight to denver. I didn't notice anything unusual about the seats coming back. I was on a seven three seven eight hundred and holy cow. I was in the first row and those seats were so narrow there was there was just like no space piazza hips. It was quite Quite shocking but what really made the trip fund was the guy next to me who Refuse to put his mask over his nose which essentially made it ineffective who then was coughing for a significant part of the flight. So if so. If i'm hospitalized next week blame yeah. Exactly you know in my wife said well. Did you say anything to him. It's like well. Gee you know these days with all the violence going on. If i say something. I'm losing a few teeth. So of course i say to them. So it's these are tough times. But but i must say that In retrospect if had to do it all over again probably wasn't worth the trip. I go out to go teach a co pilot proficiency program. That part was actually fun but the coming home. Not so fun. Was the plane full. Oh yeah i. I think there were a couple of seats but it was very close to full. Every every i've been on lately he's been full well Speaking of flights we've talked about avello avenue. I can never remember to preferred pronunciation of this of this airline but We see from the point. Sky dot com that the airline has cut back some destinations from route map. Monterey california's disappeared saint george. Utah has disappeared. those were destinations that they were not flying to but they were scheduled to start either in late september or early october of this year but they've disappeared from the schedule. The airline says they take another look at our plans for these two markets next spring They also point out. The demand is lower than expected. And the again here we go. The cova delta variant is cited as a as a cause well familiar with both those markets Monterey is about an hour and a half here. And i'm i'm there quite frequently saint george utah They've got a new airport in the last ten years. We used to be a great one right next to the city and now the new one is probably a wider now twenty miles out of town. Neither of them are particularly large market. And i think they're flying out of where were they fly. These flights From burbank. I think to these locations. I would think that these are pretty low. Volume routes to to begin with. So i'm guessing they kennesaw based on the the preflight Bookings that their time was probably better spent on other markets. Yeah but that was supposed to be their their niche I mean service out of burbank and To all these great destinations and i I don't know what it's looking like on the east coast. I think they said their bookings are stronger. But i mean it does make you kind of wonder how how well they're supported financially. If before the service even begins. They canceled because of lack of interest Did they think this whole thing through very well. I don't i don't know it's difficult to plan. But they really have been making lots of adjustments all all along They were to begin flights to provo. Utah starting in middle of september. But that's been pushed out till the middle of november and This past july. They cut some Flights to two of its markets at that time grand junction colorado and bozeman montana. They also dropped his service to mesa phoenix arizona so You know these aren't necessarily permanent permanently. Dropped out of the Other routes there but In terms of being viable right. Now it's just not happening. I guess i think burbank good location. I think that'll probably work out. Well for them as a hub. They can capture a lot of the the north l. a. market from there. Obviously people that live you know. Lax and south or not going to drive to to burbank..

"Our first story comes up. Wait a minute where is this from pedley. Paddle your own canoe dot com. I didn't notice that. I'm not sure what that is but rob Pilots at piedmont seem to be making out financially pretty well these days well in terms of it's all relative to regional airline pilots but regional airline money has certainly gone up over the last few years From what we used to talk about pilots being paid peanuts and and they're making better but this time what really irked. Everybody was that the pilots got bonuses and the flight flight attendants are still arguing trying to get a contract and many people in the labor movement. Thought that was rather unfair and One of the comments. I saw this story was of course. It's unfair. that's what they have unions for because they have to fight for things like that. And i it never fails to amaze me that. Ceo's of any any organization can do things like that and say oh those people over there. Oh we we don't even see them they just don't exist But but hang on keep you know. Keep your dedication To the company going. Because we'll take care of you one of these days It's tough to Tough to stomach. I guess so. We should explain that. Piedmont is a wholly-owned subsidiary of american airlines it operates under the american eagle brand it's a regional carrier so Piedmont says they struck a deal with the alpa union. Where captains would receive a thirty thousand dollar retention bonus in november and additionally current i officers would get thirty thousand dollars. Also if and when they're promoted to captain and pilots who move on from piedmont to american's mainline Business would get seventy thousand dollars but there's more apparently also pilots who meet certain working hours targets over the next two years would be eligible for an additional fifty thousand dollars. The potential is is quite a quite a bit of cash. Well and i think something. That's interesting we were talking about the way that west was keeping pilots flight attendants mechanics really busy last week and i didn't hear any mention about about bonuses. I mean they do get more money for Working pass their their guarantees. At least it's interesting at least on the pilot side. But i don't know if the flight attendants have that i don't believe they do because i believe flight attendants only get paid when the aircraft is in motion and so if they're delayed and they sit on the ground of say midway for an hour and a half taking delay flight attendants don't get paid for that and i've never understood how the flight attendants union has managed to to not bust their chops on that I just amazing to me. But i believe that's what happened. That's another reason the flight attendants get so Get so upset. And i don't blame them. I want to address the most important part of the story. Which is the source. The paddle your own canoe. Yeah what is that. we're also. This actually goes back to joke from childhood. So i know instantly. What the the reference was. You're probably familiar with the african antelope that you sometimes see thundering herds crossing the rivers. Crocodiles are trying to eat them Those are called news g. and you but people will mispronounce it as new and so the the joke which is kind of an eight year old level to Mother canoes were talking about their baby. Canoes again i'm mispronouncing purposely. The first mother had a frisky. Disobedient little canoe that caused everyone a lot of trouble. She was always looking at the behavior of the other. Little good news. one day. She said the second mother. My little new is such a problem. If you see him getting into any trouble feel free to give them a wack. Second mother replied. Go paddle your own canoe. That's that comes from. I never heard that i'd never heard that. Thank you for that. Bit of flavor max Trying to provide the color here this evening but i think I i have to tell you. I think that if you're going to if you're going to start that kind of rivalry. I'm going to have to start coming up with some of my own jokes. They won't be nearly as good as your history. The the gauntlet has just been thrown. Who's going to come up with the worst jokes. Yes and we want. We don't want old jokes. Want canoe jokes. That was good. It was good for rob okay. Battle lines have been drawn. Sorry i didn't mean to I didn't mean to distract anybody. Sorry it's quite all right so the next Story comes from a publication that we have heard of that needs no explanation. That's usa today. That's an easy one this is He's restrained now. Chilling airplane video serves as faa warning about unruly passengers and the faa has a web page That i wasn't aware of before Looking into this story it's titled zero tolerance for unruly and dangerous behavior tool kit and it provides a lot of kind of interesting information in including this this This video some other videos. It's got a letter from administrator dixon to airport leaders on the zero tolerance policy. Scott his message on that policy and one titled. You don't want your pilots distracted. Unruly behaviour doesn't fly and they also have some Would you call them Posters or things that the images that could be used his his posters around airports. Trying to make the point that you know if you're Unruly aboard an airplane. You While you're causing a problem and it beat it may become a problem for you. And i've seen those posted on the faa's instagram website. Essentially as memes including one. Which i saw which a really old lady on it which to me was just kind of weird..

"So i think it doesn't have nearly as much in common as the other segments of the industry Do and so. Yeah it does sort of get left behind a little bit. I think whenever people start talking about aviation and This is Got the name. Thomas w has We all fly gallery. Because the thomas w has foundation contributed ten million dollars towards this so. I don't know much about that foundation in fact i don't know anything about that foundation actually But that's that's where the funding came from But since we're talking about the smithsonian's national aerospace museum we probably should should mention that As we record this episode the innovations in flight Event is still scheduled for saturday august. Twenty first at the airspace museums. Hoover hosie center in chantilly. Virginia course we attend every year. will accept last year because the event wasn't held This year's event is going to be very limited due to policies put in place by the smithsonian regarding the cova pandemic and there will be no special indoor programs as has been the case in the past and including us There there is not timed entry for the museum itself but there are timed tickets required for the outside displays You can get those free online at the museum website And they are for either the morning ten. Am to twelve pm or the afternoon. Twelve thirty two to thirty. I think there was six hundred for the two thirty when i looked this afternoon. And three hundred for the ten thirty admission so it's other still plenty of tickets out there for everyone that everyone to go in and besides there's it's sierra space museum there's plenty of things to look at There's an x wing now in the restoration hall at that flew in over you know and other other new exhibits so i mean it'll be don't it's the air and space museum you if you're in the area and having other aircraft magically appear for the afternoon it's a celebration of things with wings that's rotary or so it's it's fun besides i'm kind of partial to the hashtag but that's just me. Hello is going to be flying. His plane in. I'll be attending. David is as well Now as you probably know from previous years we meet up at the red robin in chantilly virginia at the end of the afternoon and At least as of this time we are You know planning to do that as well for anyone who would like to attend. I'm i'm thinking the The group would be smaller than in the past But that's that's fine Against red robin in chantilly virginia. It's at Chantilly crossing lane After after the event But things could change you never know So for updates You can watch the innovations in flight channel in our slack listener team or Follow us on twitter at airplane geeks. And if there's any any changes to any of that will let you know all right fuel shortages aviation fuel shortage could affect aerial firefighting so Air travel dropped. We had a pandemic. the supply of jedi aviation fuel was scaled back. Now now we have air travel rebounding but the logistics process for fuel has not as we have some shortages and that includes the fuel supply for firefighting in some air tanker basis are In a little bit of difficulty although as This one article points out wanting to kind of contributes to this is that you don't necessarily know wear a wildfire is going to explode in it can happen suddenly in when that does than the demand for fuel in that area can Can really sore. So it's difficult to predict you know when you're going to need a lot of fuel to support aerial firefighting But and it's not just aerial firefighting that's been impacted by this The airlines have. We've seen united american airlines in the past taking some actions because of fuel shortages. So we have supply chain issues all over this country as a result of the pandemic. All you have to do is go to cosco and you find shortages of this then the other this is yet another thing that's been impacted by the pandemic. We all know that. Have fuel Of all kinds dropped in volume tremendously last year and part of what happened was that the refineries started switching the pipelines over and started pumping more gasoline and diesel less jet fuel. So now there's less jet fuel going through those pipelines. Obviously they've got a switch that around a little bit. There's been a shortage of trucks and truck drivers and you add that all up hard to believe but we have supply shortages of jet fuel. Now this i started to emerge in the north west. I would say astern seeing this probably a couple of weeks ago. But now there are reports of other parts of the country that are having a shortages of jet fuel as well as you mentioned some of the airlines are dealing with it by tinkering fuel used to be airlines would take just the minimal amount of fuel. They had to you on a particular trip because it costs money to carry excess fuel that you're not gonna use on the other hand you don't want your aircraft stuck at an airport. That has no fuel. so now. They're loading up the airplanes with more fuel so that they don't have to get Fuel at airports that have shortages. So it's really pretty amazing dynamic. That's kind of played out over the last few weeks. See for a minute there..

"Better understand what content they want during their inflight experience and tic tac is one of the platforms. They love on the ground and we're thrilled to work with via sat to give customers free access to tick talk while they're in the air as well. I don't know do you think The typical american customer american airlines customer is a tic tac user or or is it just me. That's kind of living in the past. No i don't think they are. In fact i'm sitting here going. Why are we talking about this. I just looked it up the typical. Us audience tick tucker sixty percent. Female forty percent. Male sixty percent are between the ages of sixteen and twenty four twenty. Six percent are between the ages of twenty five and forty four. So yeah it skews pretty young and i would say it probably skews younger than the average american airlines customer. So big deal about it. I listened to tick-tock or a oh right i. I watched tic tac right. It's on your wrist right. It was going to say you watch the watch right. It's funny of all the things that for years we've all dealt with. There is no streaming on an airliner. We're not doing it period because it's too much bandwidth And so this is the first thing american chooses to to stream. I dunno sounds weird. But i think they're hoping their audience is going to skew younger eventually. Perhaps or maybe they're trying to project that image of being. I don't know hip or tune with the times. Perhaps youthful exuberance. Well maybe it's a partnership with The owners attack. Maybe they have put up some money. And said hey. We'll help pay some of the cost because we would like to promote our platform to more people who aren't currently using it well and the fact that platform is can be done in packets of bits and bytes because the average chick talk is under two minutes so i mean from a technological standpoint. It might actually be the fact that it's short things to stream not necessarily long hourly things that most people don't watch tick-tock for more than a couple of minutes or you know unless unless they happened to be a fourteen year old who's constantly obsessed with it but do you think they will support uploading to tic tac from the airplane this way we could watch all of those fights and all the violence of passengers in real time absolutely. I think i think absolutely you should be able to though the upload speed means that you probably. It'll be like setting postcard from europe when we were growing up that the upload will occur about thirty hours after your flight lands but besides that it'll be good all right. I've changed my position. I think tick-tock talk on. The airlines is going to be great well. There is one guy who doesn't really take that position in us. Senator marco rubio the republican from florida and he sent a letter to doug parker the american airlines chairman and ceo. He did this. After american announced this innovative partnership with tick-tock and senator rubio says as you know in twenty nineteen the us government launched a national security review of tick-tock do pro data privacy and data security concerns a review which remains active to this day. He goes on by partnering with tick-tock. American airlines is now lending its brand credibility to accompany that endangers national security and the data security of tens of millions of americans. Many of them minors. I urge you to suspend american airlines innovative partnership quote unquote with tick-tock while the us government completes its investigation into the national security risks posed by the chinese owned hap-. Okay adverse might position. I'm opposed to it. I'm just wondering just exactly. What would the chinese government or the chinese military do with all of these millions of tick-tock videos of people falling off their skateboard dancing in their dining room. I don't show little to prisoners of political prisoners perhaps or something. I you know i. I don't know i don't know it. It's very strange that they they chose to To partner up with With tic tac but I doubt very seriously doug is going to change his ways Based on what. Marco rubio has to say. I guess we will see Curious to see what the responses and curious kind of the word you know. It was in my mind right now. The whole thing is kind of curious it just doesn't seem like You know the the kind of thing that i would have put on the top of my list of things to do to improve customer experience. But hey what the heck i guess. They'll try and see how it works especially considering how many flights american has been cancelling Which i think comes up another story but it does. It does but first. Let's talk about an interesting video that we've watched on youtube This is about a national cargo. Boeing seven four seven dash four hundred. That was departed from tokyo's narita airport for seoul south korea and during the climb out at about twenty seven. Thousand feet reported a fire indication in a cargo department and this This video is Sort of reconstructs. The flight based on the The atc communications but Max trescott it is kind of an interesting listen a little bit concerning as well so it runs about ten minutes. It's largely audio that they did create a map that shows roughly the position of the aircraft and the terms that it's making i looked it up. This incident was from july twenty ninth. So it's very very current and recent and i think we all would agree that the communications were very ineffective between the pilots and the controllers now. Interestingly we were all talking about this just before we hit the record button and robert. I think came up on opposite sides of it. I said wow you know..

American airlines provide some free in flight wifi offerings and it just added tick-tock. Now if you'll know what tic tac is ask your kids. It's it's the popular social networking service. That's owned by chinese company. Bite dance and now on via sad equipped narrowbody aircraft american. Let you connect to talk free for thirty minutes. And there's a quote from clarisa sebastian. She's americans managing director of premium. Customer experience an onboard products has kind of a mouthful. She says faster. "Own the number of air. Travelers is as high as it's been during the pandemic at least in america but if you're going to fly you might want to brace for some unruly behaviour by last week. America's aviation regulator had logged more than five hundred investigations into this year. Put on your bass boat on your trip behavior. That's why substance a comparison. There were only around one hundred fifty in all of two thousand nineteen when a great many more people were flying. Truth is that even on the ground. The airline industry is a bare knuckle. Business profits are hard to come by. companies are born. Learn to fly and go bust on your long airlines. Earning season and tomorrow investors will be watching. Delta's results probably still in the red but on track to profitability later in the summer. Next week it'll be easyjet. And united the week after ryanair and iag which owns british airways ministry of others now that the pandemic is receding in some places. How will the industry gain altitude. The pandemic has been absolutely catastrophic. Travel in twenty. Twenty travel was down by about sixty six percent on twenty nine teen simon. Right is the economists industry editor. Look fewer carriers went bust in twenty twenty then in each of the previous two years. So there's something is obviously going on here. Is this something odd. Bit of state. Help bailing out these carriers by. That's part of it but you have to look at the history of airlines. Really only thirty carriers over the last few years of the hundred around the world have actually made decent prophets in. We have a variety of airlines backed by states. Some owned outright by states. it's business that all have a deep involvement of governments. many running. An airline is a point of national pride having a national flag on the tailplane. Good example is japan's bailout. They know to the quarter million jobs at stake in this role in connecting parts of the country. Well that's japan but lots of government stepped in to help their flag carriers. How did those altered which is amazing body recommend that over the course of the pandemic two hundred and twenty five billion has been handed out. Globally sometimes has come with strings. Attached for example france has increased. Its stake in reference to nearly thirty percent. Germany now has a twenty percent stake in who decided to tell you now fully state-owned but it won't cost. What do you mean at. What cost of taking big government by lesson particularly ones. I've now have governments as shareholders will find it very difficult to restructure to the degree they need to do. Governments will be wary about allowing them to might be job cuts. They may be obliged to run. Routes that government's failure important for connectivity. So i think. I'll have a problem in doing so. The restructuring that they really need to do and in your mind is clear that they need to restructure all forecasters. Reckon it's going to take until twenty twenty four probably until air travel gets twenty nine levels and in order to survive in a new world of fear flyers subtle with enormous debts. The way to get ahead is to have a low cost base. If you're spending years years paying back this money it's gonna be impossible to invest in the new services products and technology. That will help you get ahead and also i look by now. Don't guarantee success. Gulf carriers the flag carriers in singapore cathay pacific but they rely on long-haul trips and heavily on business passengers as well and that runs on the whole world reopening. So how does domestic travel figuring here for the carriers that deal mostly in that the airlines that ah bouncing back most quickly are the ones with big domestic markets. That is the us and china in particular in the us. Sixty percents travel is domestic in europe and the middle east is around ten percent and china surpass america's the world's biggest domestic market probably because bounce back from the pandemic more quickly than america and so in china domestic flying return to pre pandemic levels in the. Us isn't a little bit lower but if you look at the july the fourth week handled some of those days actually surpassed two thousand nineteen which is pre pandemic year. So things that much much better for the domestic carriers in those countries these ads also been helped by bailouts the government and made available loans to the tune of about thirty two billion but because they're coming back the american airlines of started to raise money on the market american airlines ten billion in debt in march. Most which is going to repaint loans. United nine billion a month later. Same sort of thing. So domestic travel and the early exit from onerous government debts. Make it to your us and chinese carriers vitamin advantage and what about the no frills and of the market. The low cost carriers have been eating lunch of the full service carries on short-haul routes for many many years now and because he's like cost carries. I've really been pretty profitable and also because they have a very very lowest cost base. They have strong span shakes particularly in your also because i have these lower costs. They can cut fares to stimulate demand so they cannot win market share. So they're in a pretty good position. Picture isn't the same everywhere. in america. The ultra low cost carriers. They only really have ten percent of the bucket whereas in europe. It's fifty percents about so they haven't been to attack but it's much more tilted in favor of the big carriers. So is that where the opportunity lies. After the pandemic in these low cost carriers and shorter routes we say the low cost carriers of come in particularly regulation in europe and that could be some opportunities in some nations aircraft. Cheap there are plenty of pilots their slots at capacity constrained airports. There are all kinds of reasons. Why now is actually pretty good time to start. An airline saying is happening. This res in the us which is flying between smaller cities have been ignored by the bigger carriers avello which is taking tourists to californian hot spots. But we don't see dramatic restructuring. But what i think we will see is an opening up of the between those low cost carriers that operated successfully and the full service carriers which i think he can be stuck a little bit by almost taken on and the often travel. So i think that's the thing we're probably going to experience mostly as you say it's it's a bit of a muddle picture there. There will be winners and losers but it will depend on how strong balance sheets where before. What the state of the bailout has been. How much of it is domestic travel. What's your view from thirty thousand feet as it were will. All of this in the end reshape the industry. The industry has been through several upsets of every time. Somebody says this is gonna restructure the industry and it never really does. I think is because of this government invoked and the way the industry is structured. The reason that you can't have been.

"Us airlines detail. Plans for resuming boeing. Seven three seven max. Flights was david indicates. It's another week. We gotta have another seventy seven max. Story and there are some <hes>. Some mandated system changes in training requirements. That we've talked about previously before. You're an airline can fly the seven three seven max but mr trescott in the us <hes>. We see some airlines. That are already making some returned to service announcements. I really kind of happy to hear this. American airlines has already done a test flight and they're going to have a regularly scheduled route <hes>. Starting the end of this month with seven three seven max. So it's great to see that we're getting near the end of this <hes>. Debacle it's been very very painful for everyone. Involved especially for for boeing especially for the families of those people who died in the two accidents that occurred <hes>. Boeing i think is going to really have a be taking long-term hit <hes>. Last year they had one hundred seventeen. Max cancellations this year through october. They've had four hundred and forty eight cancellations. I saw another story elsewhere that said that <hes>. Of course the the buckle the profits come from the the single airliners like the seven three seven and that if you look over the forecast for the next ten years it looks like they're going to have a much smaller share of this single-aisle airliner market than they have had in the past. So this is going to have a very dramatic long-term effect on them as a company <hes>. But it's great to see that airlines are going through a lot of work right now to to get these aircraft back in the skies and the the three united states airlines that operate the seven. Three seven max. At this point are <hes>. Have some similarities in terms of how they're treating this with passengers. American united and southwest seem to all be saying that if you got some qualms about flying on that aircraft that you can re book <hes> without penalties <hes>. There's some variations in in the <hes>. The requirements there for the those three airlines but <hes>. The american says you can change your itinerary and fly to another city within three hundred mile radius with no extra charge. And if you cancel your trip because of concerns about flying that airplane you'll receive a travel credit <hes>. United is <hes>. Re booking you at no charge or giving you a refund if you don't wanna fly on a max aircraft and <hes>. United started their service first. Quarter twenty twenty one <hes>. As you mentioned max <hes>. american starts to the end of december and south west is looking to start in the second quarter of twenty twenty one and if you <hes>. Are concerned you can re book to a flight on a seven. Three seven dash seven hundred or a dash eight hundred without paying a fare difference. If the origin and destination cities are the same <hes>. Or you can get a full refund or credit towards future travel depending on your ticket type so watch your <hes>. Your reservations in the information and stay close to the requirements of the particular airline. If this is something that's of concern for you as for me you know. I'm almost tempted to find a seven. Three seven max flight. That goes somewhere interesting. And just do it. And so i can say that. Hey <hes> put my <hes>. Well money where my mouth is my life where my mouth is and say that. I don't really have any issues with flying on the seven. Three seven max on a us airline at all. That was the question i was going to ask. The co host here was. Would you do it. And i i'm with you. I have zero qualms about flying the seven. Three seven max <hes>. In probably because as i think about it when pilots train and check out on new aircraft types the thing they pay the most attention to are those little things that are different especially the ones that <hes>. You know can get you in trouble. Those are the things people train on those things that people think. About every time they step into the cockpit. Everybody to fly a seven three seven. Max from huron forward will be thinking about the procedure for how to remedy <hes>. You know any kind of problem that they have with the system. So i if those problems are encountered in the future i think pilots are going to respond to them quickly and correctly so i have no qualms about flying them.

"Which airline is the best airline in the US. You may have your own opinion based on personal experience, which carrier is the best in which is absolutely rock bottom when it comes to things like delays or loss baggage. Or how many times you've complained? The Wall Street Journal is out with the annual middle seat scorecard ranking of eight major airlines, let's find out which are flying high, and which are stuck on the runway with Wall Street Journal middle seat columnist Scott McCartney who joins us via Skype now, Scott, I assume that the ranking is based on reliability, which is in this case divided into seven categories that are important to travelers first of all what were these operational measures that the survey was based on Charlie we look at on time arrivals cancelled flights and extreme delays points that arrived, forty five minutes late or more. We include regional airline flights and international flights. So it's a really comprehensive. Look we also use department of transportation data to look at to our tarm. Mak delays baggage handling involuntary bumping of passengers and consumer complaints on. We think these are the categories that are most important to travelers that we can get good data on and really give us a comprehensive look at how each airline's operation is running. So given this which carrier was the number one airline in two thousand eighteen so the best last year was delta on they're really doing an extraordinary job. They sold fewer than one percent of their flights. They ran on time do well in baggage handling you name it, and they were also number one in two thousand seventeen they've really been doing a good job. Okay. Major carrier finish number one. But apparently, the largest airline American didn't do so. Well, yeah, that's right. American came in next to last frontier was actually last for us this year American finished last or next to last in ten of the eleven years that we've done the scorecard each year promised to. Do better. I know they're working hard on a lot of initiatives to to really improve their reliability. But it just hasn't happened yet. They keep running problems last year. They had a computer meltdown in Charlotte that led to a lot of delays and cancellations. They had a tough summer got behind on sort of non critical maintenance work after the Southwest Airlines engine accidents where engine inspections were ordered an American had to scramble the do that. They just in general had a tough time running their operation. Don't do. Well in baggage handling and complaints pile up. When when you don't run a good operation. It sounds like it's poorly run more than happenstance. You know, I it's always hard to tell with airlines. It's a tough business. They're all perating outdoors, a mother nature poise a big role. I think some carriers in the case of frontier, it had more to do with labor relations and a nasty contract dispute with their pilots, you know, there are lots of reasons why air. Ruins don't perform. Well. But I think in general, you know, delta proves to us the big airlines Ken run well in in particular United in American have realized that this is a competitive issue and people really do care about reliability, and it it becomes a marketing issue becomes for a lot of travelers particularly business, travelers punctuality is important reliability is important. They'll pay more delta thinks if they can offer a reliable operation. Sure. A better experience talk about some of the other airlines Alaska did well coming in second Alaska has consistently done well near or at the top of the survey.
