"What a battle. Lions playing Thursday night. You're all in on this team. You've been talking about it all summer. And sometimes, you know, sometimes you get too excited. Other times you're dead on, but you just feel like this team's going to be this offensive juggernaut. I guess we're going to get a nice glimpse on it Thursday night, especially if Chris Jones doesn't play. But tell us, just give us the bullet points. What do you love here? I think they're going to be the number one offense in football this year. I think the offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, is a mad genius and he's not from the same tree as the rest of the mad geniuses. He doesn't come from the McVeigh, Leflore, Shanahan, Branch. He's not a Gruden guy. He comes in almost on his own. And this was the hottest offense in the league at the end of last season. And it was one that obviously rolled up all those wins at the end, they missed the playoffs. He would have been a number one head coaching candidate from all of these teams had vacancies. He pulled his name out of the conversations. 37 years old, smart guy, understated guy. And I don't think he's a familiar name or face to most of America, but he spent the entire off season in the lab and building. And if you remember last year against the Packers in that week 18, it was just a taste, but it was like second and 17, up four in Lambeau, fourth quarter, calls a hook and ladder. Last year in a big game on a third and eight calls Penny Sewell in motion and they go to Penny Sewell on a pass play. Different kind of offense than I think we're used to seeing when we talk about these high-fowered offense. I think they're gonna be using players in a lot of different ways, position-less, if you will. And I spoke with Brad Holmes, the GM, on my podcast that I do the season with Peter Schrager. And I thought it would be generic. This dude was gushing about Jameer Gibbs. And this was back in early July before all the fantasy hype started to go. And he said, when we were drafting Jameer, we were worried when we traded back that we wouldn't get him at 12. We wanted him so badly. And what we view in him is an elite position-less weapon, which means you could play wide receiver. You could use them out of the backfield. We might use them as an H-back. We can do a lot of different things with them. And I think they view that offense as a lot of pieces and chess pieces that they can add in all different ways together. And they were just rolling. So that's the McCaffrey model with Gibbs then. Absolutely. I think the McCaffrey model, I think the Deebo model, if you want, is the way. And David Montgomery is a really good running back. They had a good running back room last year. Remember, they had DeAndre Swift and they had Jamal Williams, who had 18 touchdowns on the ground. And they blew the whole thing up. And they're like, we'll go with Montgomery and Gibbs. And they think they got better in the running back room. That's the offense. Counter, counter. They had two high first-round picks. They didn't really seem like they improved their defense that much in general. And that was the rub last year. Why, I mean, if people are gonna pick them to be a possible fringe contender and all this stuff, like, are they gonna be able to stop people from scoring? Because on my scorecard, the answer is no. Yeah, and you look at the teams in the Super Bowl, the Eagles and the Chiefs both gave up 35 points or whatever in the Super Bowl. I think when it comes down to it, you gotta score points in the league these days. It's not gonna be that team that's the number one rated defense that immediately you put into the Super Bowl. Offense matters more than defense. And that's how I see it. And they added Jack Campbell, who people rolled their eyes, 18th overall pick out of Iowa. They like them. They like their linebackers. And then on the defensive side, they got Chelsea Gardner-Johnson, got a little bite to him. And they got this guy, Brian Branch, who, for Holmes, raving about what Gibbs is gonna bring to them. Holmes, who I think is a really smart evaluator, is like, we were shocked. Branch flew the second round. He's our starting safety. And then you add that to a defense that last year had an Aiden Hutchinson and had Houston on the outside. They feel really good about their defense. Whether or not they can stop a team when it matters most, we'll see. But I almost think that's secondary to what their offense is gonna do. I think they're gonna put up a lot of points. So the line against KC on Thursday, it's floating. It's around six and a half, but there's a Chris Jones, people kinda just staring at it. And if Chris Jones doesn't play, and again, I'm not a huge fan of this Lions team, and I think there's been way too much hype, but if Chris Jones doesn't play, what an incredible way to start the season for them. Because they got Seattle at home in week two, and you don't wanna go down 0-1, then you play Seattle, and all of a sudden Geno hits lock eight, you're down seven, nothing. It's like, wait, I thought we were going to the Super Bowl. We're all of a sudden staring at 0-2. But it feels like without Chris Jones, we could see the offense kinda get unleashed. And we've seen the road teams in these opening night games sometimes will get super frisky. Chiefs did it with Kareem Hunt that one year when they came into New England, and we're like, let's just go put up 42 in that opening game.

"Oh my goodness. Good morning, good afternoon. Whatever it is for you, I hope you're having a fantastic day. My name is Zach Schumer. This is strong opinion sports episode 400 and 79. Welcome in. Really, truly hope you're doing well. Today, we are talking about the first round of the NFL Draft. Let's jump in. I want to share my thoughts about the first round of the NFL Draft, the stuff that I find interesting, the stuff that I like. Let's start here with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft. This is very noteworthy. You have to talk about the first overall pick. The Jaguars drafted javon walker out of Georgia. It's going to be interesting because the first two picks of the NFL Draft were both edge defenders. Basically pass rushers, javon walker, went number one overall, and then the Lions drafted 8 and Hutchinson, a defensive end number two overall. And a lot of people said that Aidan Hutchinson should have been the number one overall pick. And so I just think the storyline here is going to be interesting to follow as the years go on. Is who's going to be a better player? Trevon walker or Aiden Hutchinson, who becomes the better edge defender. As the years go on, they will constantly be compared. I think as they should be, and did the Jaguars get it right. I don't know, but I'm really curious as the years go on to find out. Aiden Hutchinson is a great player. It's a bit weird. He's not a, he's not miles Garrett. Miles Garret I think partially that's just to show how good miles Garrett is. I think miles Garrett, von Miller before him. Aidan Hutchinson has never going to be the best defensive end in the NFL. So for me, it was hard to think about him as a number and overall pick, but also he's not going to bust. I would be shocked if Aiden Hutchinson was 8 and Hudson was a bad NFL player and he certainly very good defensive end. He's got to be a good leader and a good in the locker room and he may not have the highest ceiling, but he also probably isn't a bust. So that's not a ringing endorsement, but I think with the lions did was a very good thing by drafting aid and Hudson. Let's talk about the Jaguars for a second first. So the Jaguar is not only drafted, javon walker number one overall. They traded back into the first round and drafted number 27 overall linebacker Devin Lloyd, it's a solid move. They just let miles Jack walk away. And so I think the Jaguars, they got two new starters on defense, javon walker, and Devin Lloyd. It's kind of a weird draft because there was no clear number one best player available. There was no Kyler Murray, miles Garrett, there was no player, they're like, that guy definitively should be number one. There was a lot of debate going on. And I go back to, I think it's going to be a really interesting 5 years from now who should have been the number one pick. Was it the right move? I think the Detroit Lions killed it. Not only did they get aid in Hutchinson number two overall, a local hero at a Michigan a defensive end a guy who, like I said, probably never going to be the best in the league at his position, but a guy who I think for the next ten years could be a staple and a really good player Pro Bowl caliber player in Detroit..

"And the saints hop up and get Chris olave at 11, which we did sort of the thought experiment during the mock draft series if they take a trail on Burks or Drake London or someone like that, that probably means they are ready to move on for Michael Thomas. Chris saleve seems like more of a compliment to Michael Thomas. Yeah, and that was speaking of player tweets. I mean, Michael Thomas applauded the initial saints trade with the eagles. And so maybe he perhaps he knew something that we didn't. All those Ohio State guys just talk to each other all the time, you know? Whether it was Chris O'Leary for Michael Thomas or Albert breer, you know, they all just, they all just gossip, you know? It's all hanging out and Albert's basement probably. Watching the draft in his rumpus room, perhaps. The Lions jump up to 12 to take Jameson Williams. I thought they, I thought this trade was really good for a couple of reasons. One, they didn't give up a ton to come up 20 spots. And on top of that, look, they want to sort of open up this passing game a little bit. If you want to see if Jared Goff is the guy or not, he probably isn't. But, you know, you want to give him a shot. Jared Goff had been in a highly schemed offense in LA. I think he was a little too conservative when he arrived in Detroit last year, but he sort of shook that off as the year went on. Well, now you got some big play weapons for him. Jameson Williams is one of them. Obviously they brought in DJ shark to go along with amanra saint Brown. That's a really good trio there and Jared Goff gets to show if he can once again establish himself as a franchise quarterback. Yeah, and to backtrack for a second, we totally botched the Chris olave pronunciation on our last show, but so did whoever announced the pick in the draft this year. Yeah, they said olave this year on TV. Like I did. But just letting everybody else. But so a couple of interesting things about the Lions pick. First of all, spent the whole combine hearing a lot of people rave about quasi, adolfo mensa, the Vikings, new general manager. This was a weird deal, right? The Vikings traded their first and second round picks, so 12 and 46 to the Lions for their first second and third. So 32 34 66. I mean, in a draft where it seems like the fall off was 16 or 17 in terms of talent. I think you gave up a lot and really didn't get a whole bunch in return. Yeah, it was a bit of a head scratcher, but everyone's bored is different if you thought the strength was, I don't know, 32 to 50, maybe it makes some sense. Maybe, yeah, maybe you feel like you need a couple more guys there, but the Vikings seem like, I mean, this is not a team that can just, you know, they're not like the chiefs where they can just hen peck around the edges here and just like pick up guys who fall to them. I mean, they need a lot of help on both sides of the ball. So I thought that was a little bit surprising, but jamison Williams to the lines. I mean, if I were Jameson Williams, probably wouldn't be that thrilled, but if I were Dan Campbell, I would be because this is such an organizational vote of confidence in you. Like they're treating you the way Brad Holmes is treating you the way that less need has treated Sean mcvay, which is pretty incredible. The commanders who had moved down from 11 to 16 end up taking John dotson out of Penn State and it's a nice pick. You get the sort of the speedy deep threat to go along with Terry mclaurin here. This to me was the sign that it was like, uh oh. There's only one left. If you want trail and burkes, you better make a move right now. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, datsun was like the music playing during your Oscar speech, you know? It was like oh boy. Interesting stylistic compliments, right? I mean, we talk about that a lot on the show, but Curtis Samuel, Terry mclaurin, and datsun, does that fit what Carson Wentz does best? I don't know, do they care that it's what Carson Wentz does best, you know? At this point, I mean, did they kind of view him as a one year solution to their problem anyway? I don't know. But I also didn't think that was their biggest need. I don't know, very curious night for the commanders, I would say. So far. Very curious off season for the commanders, one could see. Yeah. And then obviously trailing Burke's to the Titans at 18 with the pick they got in the AJ Brown trade. Let's go to the top of the draft because that's usually important. The Jaguars do indeed go with travon walker here. Later in the first round, they traded back into get Devin Lloyd, the Utah linebacker, versatile guy. So a couple of really versatile defenders joining their nothing on offense though. We do know they address that offensive line to an extent in free agency, but yeah, I don't know. What's your feel on walker this way? I mean, this is, this feels like the riskiest first overall pick in quite a while here. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. Would you say, okay, this is going to get clipped and taken out of context. So every four seconds, I'm going to say, don't clip this and take it out of context. In the middle of my sentences. But is this, is this the most potential potential only based? Number one overall picks since JaMarcus Russell. Because you're betting purely on potential with walker, the production wasn't there, you're hoping that what you bring him into can turn him around, turn him into a star. I'm looking at the list of number one overall picks. Trevor Lawrence, Joe burrow, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield miles Garrett Jared Goff, James Winston, Jade and Clowney. Eric Fisher, I think, is different. I've heard 2013 to 2022 comps for the draft. I don't really think that. I mean, I think 2013 was just a bad draft. Andrew Luck Cam Newton Sam Bradford Matt Stafford. Maybe Jake long. From Michigan, maybe Alex Smith, another guy that you'd have to use so correctly. Maybe Courtney Brown. Maybe this was like a Courtney Brown kind of pick, too. It's a little bit, look, you could say it's a little bit clownish as far as the lack of production, but Clowney was just such an off the charts, just physical specimen coming into the draft. It reminded me, at least the news cycle leading up to it, and maybe that's the only comparison you can make here. It reminded me a little bit of 2006 when the Texans had the first overall pick and for months, the conversation was, well, Reggie Bush, but maybe Vince Young and then all of a sudden three nights for the draft. It's, oh, it's Mario Williams. Okay. And then that ended up obviously being the very correct choice. It's a little like that, I guess, but Williams is so much more productive on the collegiate level and also just again in the clowny mold as far as the physical traits go. And walker was probably the best traits guy in this draft, but I don't even think he was at the level of those two guys. I will say this and I think the Devin Lloyd trade up sort of hammered this home as well. Whatever they're planning to do defensively, it's gonna be, you know, it's gonna be a little bit. Let's just say it's gonna be multiple. That's a really lazy way of putting it. They want guys who can do a lot of different things well is what you're looking at here. I do think Aiden Hutchinson in the end, I think is a wide 9 pass rusher. And that's what he's going to do with the next level. I don't think there's another way you can really use him. Ron walker obviously you can move around a little bit. I know it's kind of a, you know, it's like, well, he rushes on the inside and that's it. Oh, that's all right. You can brush them on the inside. You're fine with that. Get in third down movement inside. There you go. Yeah, I mean, if you had the chance to take Aaron Donald at number one overall in that draft, you might have done it, right? Because that was the that was the other draft that this reminded me of because that was the Khalil Mack Jade young Clowney, Aaron Donald draft, right? And so in Khalil Mack was a little bit like walker and that he kind of really got pushed up the board late and then I remember former boss Peter king actually advocating for him to go number one overall a couple of weeks before the draft and everyone was like, what? You know, like nobody was thinking about Khalil Mack at that point being that kind of guy. But it was a situation where the defensive coordinator that was inheriting him had to use him in the right way. And this, I think, will just forever be the biggest gamble in Trent balke's thought process here, right? Selfishly, you're gonna have to legitimize this pick, but so much of the pick success rests on the ability of a coach who doesn't share your brain, you know? And is he going to be able to use him the way that you're trying to get him used? And is it going to look the same when you're not playing in a defense that just set the record for the most players on one side of the ball being taken in the first round of the NFL Draft? The other storyline in every draft ever held quarterbacks. Number one overall pick in quarterbacks. That should really just go on every podcast outline. Just the one quarterback, just Kenny Pickett going to the sealers at 20, the Steelers don't have to jump up. They just sit back and have their choice of all the guys, and then everyone behind them said, we also don't want a quarterback. So the Steelers take Kenny Pickett guy, they're obviously very familiar with. Even though, I mean, are they going to play with a smaller football this year? Are they going to let them throw like a hockey puck around the field? I don't know how this works. His hands are just too small, Connor. They're going to let him. I actually took one, I took it out of my son's hands like a couple hours ago. We had these little baby footballs. These little rubber baby footballs that you get when you put a quarter into the machine at the grocery store. It's like, oh, they're just gonna look Kenny Pickett Kay with the baby football. Yeah. I also just point out, like, you have a, you have a very young child in the house. She's literally the floor, like choking hazards? Like Connor? Yeah. It was probably a bad idea to buy him like a gumball machine football, but you know, he's swallowed and eaten larger pieces of food, so I'm sure a football had passed in a few days. Fair enough, fair enough. You make it work. But yeah, so old baby hands picket, being the first quarterback off the board here. Here's my thought process on it. If any other team besides the Steelers took him, we would have been like, what on God's greener, especially in the northeast, in an outdoor stadium, we would be like, what a God's green earth is going on. But it's the Steelers. And Kenny Pickett will probably play there for ten years and he'll be pretty good. And that'll be that, you know? I mean, they're just a well run organization. And well run organizations can do with the Steelers did, which is ignore the decline of your quarterback for far too long, and then just sit there 20 and just be like, you know, whatever, whatever happens happens, we'll take canny picket if he's there, if nope will take somebody else and we'll make them good. So we touch on the jets here. Really nice night sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, who, if you're not gonna get deebo Samuel, it's kinda like Garrett Wilson, is your next best bet here if you're the jets. And then obviously they come back in the first round, get Jermaine Johnson. A guy who, I mean, look at a lot of people thought he was a top half of the first round lock and he ends up sort of sliding down. I do want to talk about the giant draft, which, you know, it was a little bit, you know, by the board, a little bit chalk here, but I mean, they end up landing two guys here and came on thibodeau and Evan Neal that you just feel really good about. Yeah, and I think what's interesting too is a player who I don't think the Giants would have taken a year ago, 5 years ago, ten years ago. I think that they've always been fairly conservative when it comes to players who let's just say like, you know, the Tom cawthon regime especially, like, right? There's that matrix of like if a player is ever mentioned as having like some sort of like an outlandish personality or, you know, is more expressive or there's the rumor that he doesn't love football or whatever. Like that player almost always traditionally got lopped off Tom Coughlin's board, right? Or by extension, Dave gettleman's board because that's how Dave gettleman spent a lot of his formative years. And so I think that this is a chance for them to finally. Since Jason Pierre Paul came and left, they have not had that complete package in terms of tools at the pass rusher position, right? They've kind of just had guys, right? And they had to overpay for people like Olivier Vernon to make up for that. But now they have pure tools like intense speed and bend and quickness and power and this is something that is very foreign to the Giants. Over the last 5 or ten years, let's say. Indeed, indeed, I want to make one real quick point about K mount thibodeau and then I want to hear your Evan Neal take because I know you're a huge Evan Neal guy, but one thing I should have brought it up during the mock draft show, one thing that kept on coming with thibodeaux throughout the draft process because I just keep on watching them and be like, you know, I don't think Hutchinson or walker are generational prospects by any stretch of the imagination, neither is thibodeau, but I just don't know why he's not in the conversation with those two other guys. And one of the things that kept on coming up was like, ah, you know, not a lot of ankle bend is kind of limited type of thing. Like, he played last season on a bum ankle. Doesn't that doesn't that count for anything? Doesn't let playing on a severely sprained ankle factor into your assessment of someone's ankle bend? Yeah, it's pure laziness. And it was cool. You know, I did a story inspired by obviously a great idea that you had for our draft preview issue. And I got to talk to a thibodaux pass rushing coach that he had that he worked with during the pre draft process. And he had these slow motion videos. And I guess a lot of people look cool in slow motion. But the things that thibodeau was able to do with his body, like they have those dummies that stick their hands out and mimic like an offensive tackle. And he was like, he was like, it was like a ripple. He was almost like liquid, getting under his arms. He just does it so fast and he's just so fluid and he's got this array of moves. And I just think he's a really great, cool, fun player. And I think he'll be, you know, as long as the market doesn't just shake the enjoyment in the life out of him. I think he's going to be, I think he's going to be a good addition. That defensive line looks okay now. I mean, you know, it doesn't look great. I mean, Leonard Williams is still not going to happen. It's still not a thing, but it looks okay now. It does. It does. And you love Evan Neal. Oh my God, yeah. I put him number one in my mock draft. And it was funny. I feel today an inspirational pre draft phone call from former boss Peter king, who called, it was very nice and called just to wish me a happy draft. And we were talking about the number one overall pick and what we thought might happen. And he said, Connor, Evan Neal's not going number one. He's like, he's like, you need to understand that. And I was like, no, I will not understand it. And I held out hope that he was going to go number one. It was like 30 seconds before the draft. And if I did not have to assist in some kind of calamitous parenting duties at that moment, I was at my computer tweeting Evan Neal number one. Here we go. I was ready for it to happen. I think he is just a badass natural left tackle. And now he gets to play on the right side, so he doesn't have to, you know, I think he'll come out strong. He's gonna have a really good first year. And you know, Trent balke, you know, just you're gonna see what you missed out on. All right, we've arrived at the miscellany of the show. The potpourri category. I'm just gonna, I have three takes, I'm just gonna throw out and you can make them what you will. You can also throw out your own takes. Maybe we just saw a yell at the same time and see how it comes out. But I really, I love what the use in Texans are doing. I'm totally on the same wavelength of everything going on there right now. Obviously, but I love the Derek stingley pick. And again, I don't wanna like, I know we played two seasons after his freshman year. I don't know if he really put forth the kind of full force effort the last two seasons that maybe you wanted to see out of him. But I think there's a really likely scenario that Derek stingley ends up being the most valuable player out of this draft class. And there was all this talk about the top ten. Which was just nuts to me. So I think taking him third overall was just a tremendous and then kenyon green is another guy who was kind of being mocked outside the top 25 and that's sort of stuff, but if you want like a tone setting guard, maybe they play him a tackle, but you know, probably a tone setting guard here for a team that, you know, if you already have 17 running backs on your depth chart, the Kenyan green is the guy you get. So I love those two picks and obviously the Texans also picked up some draft capital moving down from 13 to 15 before they took green there and yeah, big night for Nick kasaria. Yeah, I would say if there's any if there's any person that you think can get the most out of a prospect who may have lost his way. It is text and super character coach Jack easterby. But no comment on that. But yeah, no, I thought it was a good night. Does this qualify, by the way? I said if the Texans got anyone that could directly help, love you Smith, run his defense, I would have to, I would have to fill I would have to buy, well, I guess the Texans had to buy me the pool, and then I had to float around in vanilla pudding. What did I say? Vanilla pudding was the only real solid thing we settled on with that. We're gonna have to get some sort of behind the scenes video of Nick asaro being like, no, no, no, we gotta take, we gotta take Kenneth walker here. We need another running back and love you Smith banging the table and saying, no, I need Derek stingley. That's really the only way you do it. And plus we said we do it same night as well, which, you know, just logistically, it was gonna be difficult to pull off or confirm that we had to pull it off. Oh, well. I think I have a little vanilla pudding upstairs, but you know, enough to fill a pool, question mark? You can eat that vanilla pudding in that would be a good compromise right there. Close enough, yeah. Kobe dean falls out of the first round, a little bit surprising, you know, the packers, packers do not take a receiver. I don't think he necessarily blame them based on based on the board, but I was still surprised that quay walker, I know a lot of people expected it. I was surprised coy walker went and Nico badine didn't, as our Albert breer reported the other day, there is some medical stuff going on with dean, that sort of added up that maybe scared people off,.

"All right, look, I think it's the wrong pick, but it's also the jets and we're projecting. So I'm fine. If Robert sala was running a man heavy scheme, then I would say Derek stingley would be a great pick for that type of defense. But he's running a zone based scheme, and like I said, you're looking for more what the jets should be looking more for as a length ball skills down the field. That Richard Sherman skill set. And that's not their extinguish, right? That's gardener. He fits that mold a lot more. So I like them on Gardner here to the jets. I think that's just a great, I think the jets would be thrilled with that pick. All right. All right. You're not putting up much of a resistance yet, Alex. It's pretty much chalk to this point. Again, all your explanations make sense. Even Gardner, like, again, I wouldn't take Gardner there. I think you could. So here's the thing, like, yeah, there's an argument to deal with there. Best player available, but you want this franchise tackle. It's the Nick Saban connection, all of that. It makes too much sense to not do it. You make sense there with the mod, like I'm just not going to protest yet. Here's maybe where we start. No, it's the next pick is where we start. But this one, this is a quantum. They're offensive line is horrible. I think that not only is there offensive line horrible, but aguano getting to this point when we were just discussing him a few minutes ago as potentially the first overall pick in the draft. It's great value for the Giants too. I mean, I think that they look at this and say that we probably just got the best tackle in terms of upside and just pure raw physical tools in the draft. Maybe not the safest, that's probably Neil. He's got the highest floor. It's kind of like the Aiden Hutchinson Trayvon walker argument, honestly, but I think guano here to the Giants is a really solid pick for them. I think they would be thrilled with that as.

"Evan Neal to the Jaguar to start off this mantra, and we are on to number two, the Detroit Lions who they got, you know, they got a potential franchise left tackle last year in pine soul. They're really, except for the quarterback position. I think you'd feel pretty good about what they had built for like an infrastructure on offense here. Maybe a little more explosiveness in the offensive in the wide receiver core. But it seems like this is still a franchise that is recovering from a very specific kind of rebuild under the previous regime where they were getting their patriot style guys in there and it didn't quite work out. And now they're trying to get guys who are maybe a little more dynamic. Yeah, I mean, I like the lines offensively. I'm a big I'm on ra, saint Brown fan. I love DJ shark. So in TJ hawkinson, I think is going to, I think he might have like a baby grunk season this year, you know? Okay, kind of like a video of like a baby grunk kind of season this year. And so in their offensive line is fantastic. I mean, your worst offensive lineman might be big V, you know? Which is a really good place to be. If you're the Lions. So that said, I think if you're Dan Campbell, you're looking for two things. I mean, so for their needs, I have them at quarterback, obviously. Defensive interior, like they need help with the tackle spots. They're desperately thin it tackle. Desperately thin it off ball linebacker. They need safety help. They need cornerback help. I don't know if the market matches the availability here. But I would say that they could also probably use a pass rusher to pair with Romeo Cora too. Yeah, I think we were looking at here is like Charles Harris right now. Yeah, presumably Aiden Hutchinson if he is their top edge rusher on the board here. Or look, I think this is an interesting spot for Kyle Hamilton, kind of like we talked about on the last show, though. You have to have a defense coordinator who has a plan for maximizing Kyle Hamilton other than just saying, well, he's really good and big and athletic and we'll figure it out. You have to take advantage of all the things he can do. Otherwise it doesn't make sense to take him this high in the draft. So in short, I think those are the two guys you're looking at here. Yeah, I would say, you know, while this doesn't necessarily come into play here, I think that the lions are clumsy and image conscious enough to let a tiebreaker tip in favor of, you know, we need a guy. I think what Aiden Hutchinson was born in Dearborn. You know, he's from the state. Local kid, like I do think that there's some intrinsic value in that as well. And if Dan Campbell's got a choice between the guy with the braveheart I black and the guy without the braveheart eye black, like I think he's gonna be biased in one direction. I'm just saying. I'll go with that. No, I'm with you on that. So Aidan Hutchinson is our pick to the Lions, the Michigan edge rusher goes number two overall, which brings us to the Texans who I just find that I find that Texans fascinating for a number of reasons..

"My Aiden Hutchinson take would be watch the Georgia game, you know? And then you're like, eh, you know? Which is scary, right? You know, I think that kind of freaks me out a little bit because, you know, George is not even Alabama in terms of offensive line talent. And, you know, he was kind of reckon, like we said, Rutgers in a lot of these other guys. And you know, when you put him up against a real elite program and there's just a different class of athlete there, he looks less like that braveheart esque, I'm seeing braveheart because of the face paint, probably, right? Is that why we're calling him? I think so. That's a very outdated reference Conner. But isn't that what he does, he puts the eye black down like yeah, he's got the super. He wore face paint and braveheart. Yeah, but like that. Sure. No, I think. I think you could say that. I don't have a better con. It's like, you say brave cart, brave cart. It's like that other movie, brave card. That's my parody about, I don't know. I don't know, something about shopping carts. Bravehearted, you could say it's like kiss. Oh, okay. Yeah. He's freely going on there. I don't know. Peter Chris. Is he the cat? Peter Chris is the cat, I believe. Yeah. I'm not a huge kiss fan, but yeah, I think he's the cat. If I were if I were ever Aiden Hutchinson's size, right? I think that's, that's the move, right? You know you're gonna be just like the most dominant player in college football and then you put on the little kitten nose and like the little whiskers and you do that with your because in a lot of ways, it probably starts out as not scary, but then if you dominate a few games, it's probably scarier than anything else, right? Like it's like, oh my God, this guy is, you know, this guy's wild. Some kind of like ritualistic serial killer type of thing going on there. The cat face guy. Yeah, but so yeah, Aidan Hutchinson incredibly athletic. I thought a little underwhelming in the Capital One orange bowl. I was less than less than impressed. They were able to kind of just block around him and now granted that's also just generally an SEC offense, right? Against a Big Ten. Offense. That's how it's going to go. But I don't know. I think I would have liked to see a little bit more of a breakthrough transcendent performance if that makes some sense. Yeah, no, it absolutely does. And obviously the expectations show high for that matchup. And it is unfair to sort of go into a game and be like, yeah, your team is completely over matched, so I hope that then takes over and single handedly wins the game, but you're right. It wasn't great tape. If I'm going to be sort of do my faux scout thing, I think one thing that does were you a little bit is the lack of length, he is 6 6, but he's short armed. That does come into play when you're talking about keeping offensive linemen out of your chest, shedding blocks, and he seems a little bit like a guy who needs something of a head of steam and to really not guys back on their heels, which is possible, but that's also one of those things where it's kind of like brute strength and power, you know, that speed the power type of thing that you can knock that what other Big Ten program do you want to make fun of? You can knock. All the fools at northwestern. Northwest and yeah, I guess that was too on the nose, but yeah, you can knock that northwestern tackle back on his heels, but can you do that to whatever whoever plays left tackle for the colts next year? Although we're saying that the year after northwestern had their first first round slater, but not him, everybody else. Yes. Exactly. It's funny though. The lack of length, so Georgia has that the right tackle is Warren mcclendon, I think, he's, I think he's coming back. And there was a couple of plays because they were moving Hutchinson around in that game. And mclennan got kind of the legal hold, right? You know, where you kind of got your hands on the outside of his shoulder pads in it was almost like you were like, where is Aiden? I can't even see him in the, you know, in the grapple. And so he got swallowed up sometimes in that game. You know, and again, it's so much easier for us to sit here and say that when that's all that George's offensive line had to prepare for, that said, he was in, he was singled up sometimes, you know? A decent like it wasn't like he was doubled the whole game either, you know? I mean, they chipped him a little bit, you know, with like receivers, you know, they would do the tight slot thing and chip them a little bit. But I don't know. I mean, I thought they cut a handle them, you know? And if I was a scout, you know, if I'm tossing up between Evan Neal and Hutchinson at the top pick, I don't know, I might take Evan Neal. And I was the guy who said penne sewell over Jamar chase. So take what I say is with a grain of salt. I mean, I'll let you live that down, but you seem to not be able to forgive yourself for that one. Where were you, where did you lie on that one, by the way, last night? So I fell on Jamar chase because I thought part of the Bengals motivation was getting ahead of making Joe burrow upset and part of that is pleasing him by getting his buddy in there who he wanted very badly. Clearly. And look, in the alternate universe where they took sewell, I don't, I think they're perfectly happy with that. Like, I don't think the lions are bummed out that they have penne soup. He had a good work a year. Yeah, I think he did too, but the Bengals wouldn't have been in the Super Bowl. There's no way. If they took penne soul. Very unlikely, not impossible, but very unlikely. Okay, let's go on to toron walker who's kind of the draft season riser here in a way. He's the Georgia defensive lineman was kind of not that the combine matters that much. But he was kind of the star of the combine with his workout and that sort of solidified him as I think he's a sure fire top ten guy at this point, and it sounds like he is in the running for that top pick. It's kind of all about potential for him at this point. You know, obviously he checks the boxes on all the measurables. In a way that the other top defensive line prospects don't, he was really against the run, he wasn't overly productive as a pass rusher, and I think the question is kind of, okay, can you make him into a password here? I think his guy who does a lot of stuff well, though. He has, you know, I think he has really good multi directional athleticism for a guy who's 270 something pounds and we will see basically, you know, do the Jaguars kind of say, okay, we're going edge rusher, but we're going with a really high ceiling guy..

"Mock draft here. Of course, everybody can go to Boston support journal. Our members can read the whole thing. And if you're not a member, this is a perfect time to do that with the draft and then I'll be now we'll actually be in person for everything. So, you know, OTAs when we have access, I'll be able to have my eyes at practice and actually give you my interpretation on the start that these guys get off to. And by the way, despite any misinformation out there, I learned a long time ago, I've been doing this 20 years every year you live and you learn as far as doing this job. And I learned a very long time ago, I don't give a crap who the Patriots pick certainly I will have my binkies that I would want them to pick. But as far as the draft goes, the Patriots pick who they pick and then we judge them in three years. And I might say certain things and give you certain information like Christian barmore last year after the draft pick, but as soon as they get on the field for the Patriots, it starts a new era. They are now judged by what they do with the Patriots. What's in the past is in the past. They get a clean slate here and then they are judged by what they do on the practice field. On film, on game day. And you know, I know there's a lot of people who still give me crap about Christian barmore, but I think my evaluation and reporting on him was highly accurate throughout and from the time he hit the practice field. I thought he was a tremendous player and was going to have a tremendous impact. I thought he had a great rookie year. Can't wait to see how he follows that up. Some guys take the next step and keep going. Some guys get the taste of being a pro and sort of, you know, maybe don't work out as hard and sort of slip. It's not specific Christian barmore. I look at all draft picks that way. And so I just wanted to sort of say that as backdrop. So coming over to BSG, it's a good time because we never quit with the NFL and the draft and I'll be at the practice. I'll be at the mini camps, we'll take a little bit of a break while. The NFL world will, I won't other than a week off there in the middle of July to do a long awaited family vacation. But other than that, we'll be going full steam and then it's in the training camp. So join up now, you're signed up until the draft next year and you will get your money's worth. So I'll read off your picks, Kevin, you sort of give me a quick take, including, I think, a little bit of a shocker here that the Jaguars do not pick Aiden Hutchinson from Michigan..

"Tremendous production down at that level of the FBS and Houston. I'm wondering to see what kind of athlete he is, right? You want to see if he's a real blue chip type of athlete here at the combine. He had really good tape, though, and he can basically do everything from line up over the nose on past rest situations on third down to kicking out over the tackle on an early down situations and being that 5 technique defensive end. He's an interesting player to watch as well. Edge defenders outside linebackers, sorry. So no, so let me see, there is one because we were really doing defensive tackles there. There is another defensive lineman I'd throw out. Perry on Winfrey, the senior bowl MVP. How you described Logan hall, I kind of say Winfrey fits a similar bill. Yeah, he's but he might be a part of the truth through technique, but if you were an MVP of the senior bowl and we're talking about a patriot show, then we absolutely have to talk about him. He's the guy people are saying put Wyatt next to barmore. Again, I don't know that that works because the size Winfrey is a little bit bigger, a little bit more stout. I think if you want to kind of pair those two athletic defensive tackles together, I look at a guy like Perry on Winfrey, would be the pick for me if you want to find somebody put next to bar more in that mold. Yeah, I like that as well. Okay, let's talk about edge. This is probably besides maybe wide receiver. I'd say the deepest position in the draft, there is not necessarily a linebacker. Like middle linebackers. Linebackers is good too. It's not necessarily as top heavy in terms of there's no miles Garrett. There's no Nick Bosa. There's no one of those guys at the very top. I don't think Aiden Hutchinson is on that level. I don't think cave on thibodeaux on that level. But the guys that we're going to see go in like one through 60 at the edge defender position. It's going to be in the double digits. It's going to be a lot of guys going in this draft there. I think in the first round, it's probably a little bit too early for the Patriots to look edge, but at the one guy I wanted to mention early on in the giraffe, who I don't think we've talked about enough is Trayvon walker from Georgia who feels like a bill type of defender because he can line up anywhere and everywhere on the defensive front, right?.

"Sailor. SAL yard at a Georgia. He was George's left tackle this past year. He's played guard as well. He had a monster game against Michigan against Aiden Hutchinson and David ojabo in the semifinal. He projects a four position guy, had a good year. He's supposed to be maybe a late day two pick, but they kind of have him right now around the fourth round. The other one I'll give you, I rarely say this about players because even like the, oh, he's such a patriot, guys. Only off at only end up in New England, what like ten, 15% of the time? I would be surprised if cade maze is not a patriot by May. Cade maze was Tennessee starting center this year. Not only is he a multiyear captain he's a captain at multiple schools, he's a transfer. He transferred from Georgia to Tennessee so that they like transfers right. He has started Evan at all 5 spots on the offensive line during his college career. And did so it, you know, blue chip programs, George and Tennessee. He's probably a guard center hybrid at the NFL. I don't think he's playing tackle. He's not quite that big at the next level. But he still has that experience. That's a patriot. That's a patriot draft pick right there. It started at all 5 spots, projected day three pick, cade maze. Let's see if he stands out at all. There's a lot of buzz that the day three offensive line is going to be where the value is at that position group, right? This draft is deep on the offensive line, and there's going to be a lot of really good starting caliber players, especially because some of the other positions like wide receiver like linebacker like edge defender outside linebacker. Those positions have a lot of depth that are going to go early in the draft. So some of these offensive linemen are going to get knocked down on day three..

"Yeah, he doesn't do anything. He's not gonna jump off the tape. He doesn't stand out to you, but you kind of watch him and you're like, oh hey, you know, this guy's in the right place at the right time a lot. Who sounds like a guy? I've heard a little bit about him too. And he seems like a Joshua blood so type, right? Who's not necessarily the Uber athlete, excuse me, that somebody like Kyle duggar is or something like that. But just tends to be in the right places, understands the defense, good football knowledge, good instincts, good IQ that saw Gardner's a guy. He's the guy. I don't know that they'll have a shot at him without trading up is the thing. And then in the other game, and by the way, his name is Kobe Bryant, but it's with a C? Yeah. It's C and then a Y at the end although he is, he wore number, I think, 13 all year. He's wearing number 8 in honor of that Kobe Bryant. In the ball game today, he obviously would be able to in the NFL now. As for Michigan, I think Aiden Hutchinson is like the textbook patriot. Now he might be the first overall. But edge rusher from Michigan with that kind of motor, I like a lot of Michigan's sophomores and freshmen, honestly for the Patriots. Not guys will be in the draft this year. I'm trying to remember who they have a great freshman wide receiver whose name is escaping me right now. Outside of that, I mean, I like Hassan Haskins, I don't know that they go with another running back as high as they did last year, but he reminds me a little bit of Stevenson. And if they don't plan on signing Harris long term, he's probably somebody who could go into that role, right? Because they want to have those two tracks. Georgia, anybody on the defense, close your eyes, throw a dart at their chart. I think the guys on the Patriots draft board. Bill Belichick.

"Was back in the hospital for a schedule procedure as part of his recovery The 5 and 7 Minnesota Vikings hosting the 6 5 and one Pittsburg steelers on Thursday Night Football at U.S. bank stadium The Steelers are coming off a one point win over divisional rival Baltimore while the Vikings are coming off losses to both the forty-niners and the Lions Good news though from Minnesota's Pro Bowl running back Dalvin cook is expected to play just 11 days after suffering a dislocated shoulder Finally for the second year in a row in Alabama player has won the AP player of the year as quarterback Bryce young easy wins the award over Michigan defensive end Aiden Hutchinson I'm Dan Schwartzman that your Bloomberg world sports outdate Markets headlines and breaking news 24 hours a day at Bloomberg dot com The Bloomberg business app and at Bloomberg quick take This is a Bloomberg business flash Hi everybody 17 minutes past the hour We update markets every quarter hour here on Bloomberg radio I'm Brian Curtis in the Bloomberg interactive brooker studio looking at the markets Well I mentioned that the PBOC set a pretty weak fix here for the yuan reference rate They set it at 6 37 O two against the dollar Now the market estimate was 6 35 23 so this plays into the PBOC has sent a pretty strong signal that is tolerance for currency appreciation is done It's run out and it's one of the reasons why they raise the foreign exchange reserve ratios for the second time this year and that is definitely driving you on weaker right now we're at 6 38 90 In the offshore market and that's a good bit weaker than the CNY close So the onshore clothes yesterday at 6 37 76 But the thing is which is what my colleague Rashad always says The thing is they didn't really do too much about what's driving the rally in the yuan and that is dollar inflows from exporters and portfolio investments I don't know if you saw the export data this week but it was pretty strong And.

"Of the two point conversion because they didn't want to try and kick into the wind Nick folk did boot two field goals with the window that's back Pat stopped buffalo in the red zone at the end They beat the bills 14 to ten It's their 7th win in a row There's 6 to no on the road The Patriots have the best record in the AFC After the loss in Miami the Giants put Arizona their practicing there before facing the Chargers Sunday in LA they'll likely again be without Daniel Jones and Mike glennon just suffered a concussion next up is rookie Jake fromm with a giant sign just last week Heisman Trophy goes out Saturday in New York off his big game to win the SEC championship the favorite his Alabama quarterback Bryce young the other finalist named Ohio State CJ Stroud Pittsburgh QB Kenny Pickett and a defensive player Aiden Hutchinson of Michigan The devil's fourth grade loss scored 35 seconds in only got one goal after that They lost the Ottawa three two and a shoot out the Devils have now dropped 9 of the last 11 Bloomberg sports jump John thank you very much It is 6 37 odd Wall Street Time to take a look at stocks and some of the names that are moving in the pre market and for that we're joined by Bloomberg radio and TV markets correspondent Gupta and we'll go right to most euphoria the most actively treated in the pre market and the role We kick it off with Intel shares ticker I NTC up a whopping 8% this morning rising after the chip maker said it plans to list shares of its mobile eye self-driving car business by the middle of next year something Morgan Stanley is calling a positive this morning So essentially this chip maker getting into the automobile business apple is what we'll move on to next to her AAPL up 1.6% in the pre market getting its second street high price target once again over at Morgan Stanley looks like they had a really busy day yesterday They were upgrading a lot As more sales it's benefiting from new product categories in virtual reality and autonomous vehicles They're expecting augmented and virtual reality to eventually be priced in and saying Apple should also benefit from a quote flight to quality in technology stocks once again Apple shares up 1.6% in the pre market moving on to market shares up after the global modern card issuing platform announces its expanding its partnership with klarna the leading global retail bank payments and shopping service into 13 new European markets MQ up 6% in the pre market moving on to some good news when it comes to the Omni crown variant or actually the only cranberry excuse me GlaxoSmithKline and verb biotechnology announcing updated preclinical data that shows their antibody drug is effective against the variants So VIR is the U.S. company you want to keep an eye on verb biotechnology up About 10% in the pre market John I'll stop here MongoDB shares rising after the database provider which competes with the likes of Oracle and Microsoft up a whopping 21% after reporting a better than expected quarterly earnings projecting strong sales and the sales of their flagship products rose a whopping 84% The ticker is MDB What's this what's Cooper software What is Cooper software Well it's just another application software company but they are really struggling And the reason I threw this in here John is because this is a company that's actually already been down Their stock has already been down 50% so far this year They came out with earnings Their subscriptions beat their estimates Their earnings came in in line with estimates and yet the stock is getting punished to the tune about 11% this morning really telling you that even as earnings season kind of trickles to a stop you are still seeing some of these companies really get punished if they're not beating their earnings by a huge margin So those shares are down 11% in the pre market cue A beating the pass four days also Tesla should mention those shares indicating maybe a rebound for Tesla Our markets reported Thanks very much Appreciate it And ahead of the cash open on Wall Street.
