"And when what should we put our heart into i mean think about the next five years of the podcast. What are we doing house of gucci. That's coming out in the month and we're going to talk about it again. I will continue talking about it. At least two oscars come on. Ben affleck's you know forty fifth career. Transformation why is bed affleck not in the last duel trailer. I know why because he is a small character in the film. But do you understand how to market movies. You do not just put the photos from the venice film festival in the last duel trailer. Jesus christ how hard is this. I don't know that's happening glass duel. That's coming out soon. i now. It's really scott season. i'm open to it. Feels like it's being buried a little bit from being i mean. I don't really think that it's going to be a hugely transformative experience. But whatever just put put ben affleck in the trailer. Let us have our movie stars. We have like five movie stars left. I think from a purely on paper perspective. That movie has more going forward than any movie. I can think of in the last couple years. Affleck damon cole road. Along with nicole khaw center right whom we love directed by ridley scott and jodi comber who now after free guy is a movie star so on paper now after free is star. It's true though. I mean. I decided about movies and now i just have to walk into the ocean. Well it'll be a very different performance at a performance and let me just say jodi comber is not the problem free guy. I thought she was great in it. Just like i thought she was great and killing eve. So there's weirdly a lot to look forward to their. We'll see what happens. I found more things to be excited about. Okay tap into if we ever see it. Sure we're gonna be dead comes out. I know related mission impossible movies. Have you been following just now. Paparazzi a tabloid staple in the uk. Is tom cruise. Parachuted into someone's backyard. And because they're filming mission impossible and every week he's surprising some hikers because he's finishing the stein or you'd like to use like some random british person's backyard for a helipad like every week. My guy is just out there doing his own stunts and glad handing the british people. He's he's trying to win something totally. No it's going to be just the heart of nostalgia probably what he's after but we shall see. Let's let's talk just a little bit. More about transformations chastain transforms entirely into You mentioned incredible makeup work. This film will be nominated for best makeup and hairstyling because of the work that is done on her that it seems like it was a huge investment of time for chastain since look like a lot of time in the chair to get that look going. She does transform. I would say physically in a meaningful way into that character kind of regardless of what you think about the movie. It's really impressive. And over time in the context of the movie because as you said it unnecessarily starts when she's like five years old yes and then he doesn't play the break. I mean it shows her like nineteen being like. Yeah jesus or whatever and credible i thought you know considering. She's like in her mid thirty s. I thought she pulled off. I've only lived. She looked great. And then all the way through tammy faye bakker's at just like embrace of permanent eyeliner and lip liner and an and permanent eyebrows. I believe as well truly truly a you know. I don't want to be mean spirited but quite a freakish look that she had by the end of her life actor. Transformations are tried and true.

"To her fate. King fun it doesn't matter that i'm innocent about justice finding keith but dad decides to try to free alison by finding the man she says is guilty even though the authorities are uninterested. He doesn't speak french. And while he's an oil rigger now working in marseilles. Yes there is a whiff here of the real life story of amanda knox who was accused of an cleared in the murder of a roommate director. Tom mccarthy said he was influenced by that but this is not that story stillwater. Open the theories friday. It has so many twists and turns. We're going to try not to give too many away as we welcome matt damon. Hello hi i should say hello from. Cambridge massachusetts your hometown my stomping ground. Yeah around here. You're known as the son of nancy. Carlsson page your educator mom but i just want to start with you have come a long way from goodwill hunting. There's so much between that academy award winning film and this one but there was still might be some expectation from viewers. You know maybe this will be that matt and we here early on it. Isn't your character says tater tots instead of tater tots. Who is this guy who is he. Yeah yeah it's i loved the movie because it is. It does kind of upset the expectations. It looks like it might veer into kind of a liam niessen movie. You know like the the guy who shows up and he's like i have a very particular set of skills just like the guy that i'm playing in this movie. Decidedly does not have any of the requisite skills that would help him kind of do what he wants to do which is to exonerate his daughter and in so doing kind of repair this relationship he has with her. This is really it kind of has a thriller set up but this is really a drama and it's about a guy from very specific part of the country but also really specific type of person you know the in in oklahoma. A roughneck is You know these guys who work out in the oilfields. It's a really really really difficult job and not a lot of people could do like. I certainly couldn't do it. When i went down there and hung out with those guys and went to these oil rigs took me about fifteen minutes to figure out that i wouldn't i wouldn't last. We know you went to oklahoma to get ready for this role with director mccarthy whose best known for writing and directing the oscar winning spotlight. You did meet a guy. Kenny baker Yeah kenny was the guy who took us around. There were a few of them but kenny was kind of our main point of contact. And that's why we ended up naming the character. Bill baker was really a nod to kenny. Well how kenny. Baker help you. You took us oil rigs. We spend lots of time in the truck with him driving around explaining what like that roughneck. Life is when the fields are up. Those guys are making a lot of money and so they're young. Eighteen nineteen year old guys with a lot of money in their pocket. And it's kind of almost like a rock star lifestyle so we kind of saw. Bill is kind of in the lake. Somebody who'd been caught up in that life and had really been an absentee father and carried a lot of guilt and shame around his relationship with his kid and even felt responsible for her life had turned out and so so the movie follows him going there. He's trying to help. And you kind of feel like it's not gonna go well by the way the real kenny. Baker also taught your character how to say theater which you tell. It's where we'd call him with questions like that he. Hey man theater theater. You'd be like theater. Thank you well. In films like the jason bourne films. You play an action hero. He speaks several languages can think or fight his way out of almost any situation as you said bill baker is damaged. And maybe also just normal. And who would know what to do. If you're not in prison. Yeah what's that like for you to reign in that kind of impulse to jump off the building and perfectly land somewhere. Listen that's not an impulse. I have proposed. That needs any raining in need to be that action here. All this guy's inaction here on some points. He's he's the inverse he's he doesn't have any of that stuff and i like in the in the other movies that i do that i try not to. I don't want to do any of that stuff i remember. When we were doing the departed. I i remember saying to mardi like i. I just wanna lose every fight that i'm in in this movie. It's much more interesting. Playing a superhero. I was kind of viewed. As sort of superhero. I mean he couldn't remember who he was but he could do all the things that we all wish we could do. You could speak every language he could. There wasn't any situation that he couldn't think is way out of. And so yeah. It's kind of like wishful film and for the audience. What has happened to you the padded. Oh the department pat and i'm you've changed outlook. We wanna listen to a little more of the film. Your character meets a play by french actress. Camille khotan who's just wonderful. Who agrees to help your character investigate but refuses at one point to keep questioning a possible witness because he turns out to be racist. He wants to point the finger at anyone as long as they're muslim and your character confronts on that. Let's listen no. I don't talk to him no he might know something no. He doesn't know something. We're not going to send it in this invited. Jail is innocent. Kim believe conversation. Well you live in some fancy ass world hunting. Because i work with guys like that all the time. It doesn't matter okay. it's not right. i'm not saying it's i'm trying to get my little girl out of jail. That's all i give about. And you some very american right now. Good i am now. Matt damon atoll mccarthy writer director. Said he very much wanted to reflect in the script the perception of america and americans. And how it's changed in the world. I'm assuming post trump world. Was that something. You're exploring and thinking about that. Sure yeah and i love that scene. Because they're just not looking at things the same way they really do. Come from different worlds and for bill. That scene comes on the heels of of virgin talking to a guy. Having this conversation in french. In front of bill bill understands not one word of it but he only understands that she's getting increasingly agitated and then she gets up and walks away and it's the only lead that he has and he can't understand why she would walk away from that conversation and he's going you know like you live in a fancy world. I was talking to the french screenwriters about that. And they were particularly proud of that that they love that idea that the american like the blue collar americans going like. I don't have the luxury of choosing who i associated with like i get put on job and i do the job and i deal with whatever i deal with like. You're being fancy like you know versus her going. Like i can't understand how this any of this would be tolerable to you. If you understand your characters and love your characters and empathize with your characters you can play each one of those people and you have a great scene where where they're just not getting each other. You know what i mean. Which is what the movie is. It's those cultures clashing in this film. You're trying to connect with an rescue a daughter. There's another little girl that enters the picture that you're obviously so fond of. You have four daughters. In real life family he managed to. I'm trying to my supermarket. And when i stand there and look at the covers. I think you've you've managed to kind of stay out of most of the tabloids stealth. I feel lucky. I don't know why i mean. I think those magazines are trying to sell sex and scandal. Most of the time. And and i think i give those people the sensitive. They stake out my house. They're not gonna get much which would be true and so. I've been unbelievably lucky in that. I've so far. Been able to get everything. I want out of this bargain. Which is the work. that's all i want. I don't none of that. Celebrities stuff is is intriguing interesting. I don't want. I don't need it. I i prefer not have it but i really really love the work and i say it's because i have friends like dear friends you know for whom that's not the case and there's nothing they can do to record it less. I have another longtime neighbor from central square. Who you know. it's just the way the kind of the penny fell and he's just had to deal with it so much more than i have and he takes the same view that i do of all that stuff but i've just been lucky in that it hasn't been as big a part of my life. We don't want to dwell on that but we should just say his name rhymes with when wreck. I can't think waiting that rhymes with athletes are unfit ben. Affleck damon when this screen a can. It was really well received. And you cried what you've been at so many of these you've why why..
