NY Rep. Claudia Tenney Shares Her Backstory and Connection to the Former Yugoslavia
"First welcome back to our one on one end studio in discussion with New York's congresswoman Claudia teddy. For those who aren't familiar with your backstory. I didn't even know it until you came in today. You said you mentioned my book, and then you said you sold me on TV and you bought my book, which talks about my parents who escaped Hungary under communism and then mentions what was happening next door in Yugoslavia. Share with us who aren't familiar or who aren't from your district, your connection to the Balkans in the Eastern Europe. I'm not of Yugoslavia in descent or Balkan descent, but I did actually see you and I said, oh, look, you know, because one of my jobs when I worked at the former Yugoslav consulate, which is obviously gone because of the war. We're still look for people in the Balkans, people in the region, and I just, you know, anyone with a sort of the accident, even though Hungarian is not similar to several creations to different route language, I just said, oh, who's this guy? Oh, he's talking about hungry. Interesting because of all that was happening and Yugoslavia being so unique, technically not behind the iron curtain. Tito was able to keep him out of the common form. So I went to Yugoslavia as a student in 1981, 40 years ago, just for a study group and ended up falling in love with the place to just so diverse and interesting and continued to stay there. Work for the consulate worked on the Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984. Learn the language, you know, just continue to go back and then obviously through the war, it was a tough time for me. I had friends from every part of the country, the former years of everywhere. Because we all worked in the consulate together, and so that's been my connection and just living in a country that was communist and then seeing the transformation since the war and them trying to emerge as a market economy, and reading your book where you hear about you're talking about some of the things that happened and how a lot of Hungarians were trying to cross through Yugoslavia and get to freedom and how Tito basically turned them in. And they read the benevolent dictator who was Marshall, Joseph pizza, right? Right, yeah, so called benevolent dictator, and that's where I, you know, I think we're on this moment in American history where people should learn that when they say we have communism we've never just done it quite right, and we had a benevolent dictator in Tito, not a benevolent dictator. Tito had a dissident camp where people were tortured and killed on a barren island in the Adriatic Sea. So it's all these communists. And he played and he played the nationalities. Right. Slovenes vice the Croatians, the Croatians versus the Serbs. Yeah, and technically he was Croatian, but first and foremost he was a communist. Right. He was able to bridge the gap and keep an allied relationship with the Americans and with kind of keeping everyone at bay to maintain this sort of artificial union of these countries and Yugoslavia, which wants Tito died. You know, they devolved into war within about ten

"Although i see a lot of people is croatia's not the mediterranean right. That's not the technical as the black sea. I'm not sure yachts and croatia. That's a pretty good place to be able to imagine. Yeah so maybe we should go to croatia. Have a boat party in croatia. We'll see this one connec. what right. Let's see how this goes in bay shore and if it goes off pretty well then we'll may have won in croatia next year tone. You would be a good thing. So croatia is exactly is exactly where i have to see this now that you look at it up. Exact right up the coast of italy all right so what is sorta right. It's right there. it's the same. It's the same type of thing so all right perfect. That's where we're going to go so next year. Twenty twenty two boomer and geo casa migos both party in croatia. adriatic sea. the adriatic go. Yeah beautiful we do this every year song about croatia. I know we sung it. There's got to be a song about. Is albanian albanian. Okay there's the africa by toto. I know that right. I know there's been some songs about the usa as well as been several of those. It's been songs about canada. I don't know if there's a croatian saw this conversation national anthem. But i don't know if somebody wrote a song about croatia but this happens every year multiple times people show up to the games but the owner. Does we get involved. The owner is not like how steinberg is not tweeting out. Like what the yankees planning to do. It's usually the yankees official twitter and social media platforms that are that are giving the updates sure or gary apple in this case last night and trying to give updates in between all the highlights. Yeah i mean steve. Cohen wants to be different. He joined this whole world thinking that he was going to be the accessible owner. He enjoys it. He's team is playing. Well he wants to be the guy that people. I'm just a normal guy. Just the owner. We could talk. I'm a fan. I'm not just a billionaire. A mets fan and then it looks kind of silly in situations like one like last night. Now i was at this game. I mean i would be pissed because think about all the people that that probably have. Notifications on steve cohen's tweets that are at city field going. Hey the owner just tweeted out that we're gonna play so weren't hanging around get another beer. Get another premium talion sausage. We are hanging out. We're getting some baseball tonight. And then it was just several seconds later where it was Yeah i don't think it was a game was supposed to start at seven ten last night. Right yeah and they didn't call it till nine thirty so the game is the game is cancelled. Tweet came at nine forty nine forty okay and he wrote at eight forty one hanging there every body were going to play tonight at eight forty one. I'm beers and food see data. But the conspiracy theorist out there when the owner is saying the head and the bottom line is affected. I don't think this is what happened last night. But the conspiracy..

"Com. Slash think so one of the about this. I mean we're talking about this overabundance of slime caused by these these by by pollution changes in the environment. I mean it really really get the sense of like of the the mass oozing of of the oceans. Pus you know the the using of a massive infection. Yeah that's one of the articles. I read though. I don't recall which one did site a marine biologist. I think where it was some researcher in this area who was saying that it's sort of like the ocean has the flu and this is the mucus coming out of its knows. It reflects a sort of general sickness in the ecosystem due to Due to pollution due to changing temperatures and all that adding up together now. of course it comes to the question of can anything be done about this About this cease not the plague of mucus. Here there are a few sort of levels at which you could answer. That question. One is well. Can anything be done about it once. It is here once. It's all collected I've read that turkish. Authorities are trying some possible solutions In that washington post article i mentioned by antonia newry gone She mentions that they they have Floated the idea of pun intended of dredging the sea floor as a way to possibly try to remove some of it that has settled on on the bottom but they're also just vacuuming it up in the surface from the surface and we've seen that in some of the images we talked about earlier these photographs of these workers with hoses just trying to suck up the slime from near the coasts For san writes quote in izmit workers have laboriously collected more than one hundred and ten tons of the mucus which was sent to an incinerator for disposal when it smells like down wind of that incinerator what. What is the smell of grilled snot. Oh man at a. This'll be a good for the ghostbusters. Right because this is the smell of having just fired a proton pack into some sort of a slime ectoplasms based organism their spiritual being fried ghost. Yes so there are some things that people are that they're trying to turkish authorities are trying to do Now that this problem has already happened. The bigger question would be. How do you prevent it from happening. In future seasons So one of the big things obviously is reducing pollution reducing wastewater run off into the sea of marmara or reducing it into any see where this could happen And that would prevent these this build up this imbalance of nutrients that sets off this chain reaction by feeding the phytoplankton. Like that and there is some indication that that could work. According to zhang's article there is. There's every reason to think halting pollution could actually make a difference in the following years Because of what we've already seen work in the adriatic sea remember. Adriatic is where Where these older reports from the eighteenth century of the murray spor co had taken place and john writes quote in the adriatic Pousse-cafe says and that's a researcher who was one of the authors of that..

"Yeah which contains things like fertilizers. This can lead to a chain reaction in which the phytoplankton sort of become stressed and under conditions of stress. They exude mucus. Our this this mucus like material. That of course can lead to these runaway conditions. Now how exactly does this process happen Well it's actually described very well in that that era jong article in the atlantic from from From june twenty-first. So she backs up to the starting point that we already talked about with With marine snow. You've got marine snow already in the water. But then you've got these imbalances of nutrients that are largely caused by the untreated wastewater in the agricultural runoff. That may contain fertilizers. And this leads. The phytoplankton in the water to produce copious mucus the excess of mucus. Then accumulates into these these things We mentioned earlier. That were sometimes called stringers. The you know the snot like strings. And then that accumulates into and then ends up somehow floating up onto the surface becoming these sheets Now one question is why do warm water in in calm weather conditions also contribute to marine. Musa village. build up will. It goes like this. In the warmer months. The sun heats up the top layer of the water column near the surface which causes increased stratification. So the warm layer of water above the cold layers of water below in the cold layer of water is denser than the warm layer of water and salinity also affects. This saltier water is denser than less salty water which is why in really salty bodies of water like the dead sea. It's easier for things to float. Because the water is denser but also cold. Water is denser so mucus forms in the top layer of the water. Where the photo synthesizing organisms. The phytoplankton are up near the top of the water. They produce the mucus after it's produced. The mucus starts to sink. But because of the water column stratification at some point it hits dense. Cool water and stop sinking. It just hangs around. And as it hangs around it starts to aggregate together and accumulate into the strings or clouds. And here's where the third element comes in mentioned I mentioned temperatures The the pollution but also the calm weather winds and storms could normally come in to rough up the waters in essentially tear up. Churn up forming strings and clouds of mucus but if the weather is especially calm that doesn't happen. At for example we talked about how this was historically observed in the adriatic sea. The adriatic sea tends to be relatively calm. Then after that jong writes there are bacteria within all of this that start to decompose it and as they decompose it. They release gases. Forming bubbles within this accumulated matrix of mucus and then it floats to the top of the water and collects in sheets on the surface and one astounding fact that john mentioned is the quote in the adriatic sea the arm of the mediterranean just east of the italian peninsula. The floating mucus can dry and toughen in the sun. Seagulls are known to walk on.

This is the second time we've done that survivor pool The first time I didn't even finish doing it. Because that's what care about an but this season survivor is more interesting. I'm a little more into it so I'm giving it a little bit more thought than next to nothing survivor. Winners at forty something. I've been waiting for for twenty years right. You're such a nerd. And then I look at the sheet of Mike. How am I losing? Heather's killing me so hopefully get some revenge in today's show because we're doing it throwdown showdown our third party she? She don't think you're going to be vindicated here because this is my country others already said she's going to. She's said to me multiple times in the last couple of days as we been getting ready record this I'm going to crush. You is what she said. I feel very confident. I baby on the underdog guys. Maybe you're rooting for the underdog. Here today I would say my country is definitely an underdog because today during our throwdown showdown we are doing Croatia vs Slovenia. So obviously. If you've listened to the podcast you know which one I'm choosing heavens Croatia. I am Slovenia and during our throwdown showdown what we do is we take opposite sides and we debate which one is better so if you guys like this format we've just put out the last two weeks we we did. Nashville Verse Austin Than. We just also put out Ireland versus Scotland. So you can go listen those and then if you throw it back. Talk Tober twenty eighteen I quote unquote season of our third showdown. We did Portland Verstraeten coober. We did Thailand verse Bali and we did Eastern versus Western Europe. So there are some goodies in there as well so check those out and then of course let us know on social at extra pack of peanuts on Instagram. Who won this battle so half were Croatia Verse Lavinia? Today we save this to last of the part series because this like this is the day new mall the Climax Actually Dana Ma I think goes up to the climbers either way. This is the climax of it we are. We both love these countries but you know Croatia has a very special place in your heart so he has a very special place in my art. So I'm ready to go to war. I'm ready I'm ready for you. I mean when people ask me what my favourite countries I stay Croatia and it hasn't changed in years. We've been there three times. I love it so much. Sure tell us why started off you again? I'm not holding back here at all. I have is actually legitimately stretching out right now as she. I'm radio I'm not holding back here not hold back. I know you all because you say you want to crush Croatia. Well I don't even know where to begin because there's nothing really bad to say about Croatia. It's a gorgeous country. It has so much coastline. I mean it's okay so geographically. It's across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. Italy gets a lot of love for its coast cities all of that. It also is heavily touristed so Croatia. We'll becoming very popular and mortar should still has less tourists. I think than some of the bigger countries bigger most populated or not most populated most touristic countries in Europe. But it just has this vibe where people are friendly. It's just as beautiful if not more beautiful in some of these other countries. I mean we're talking a thousand miles of coastline if you like if you like the beat if you like being near the water this is the country for you. So it is beautiful. Of course I love creches. Well I think Slovene is even more beautiful. Why because it has more going for it as at least as far as for its size so this country punches above its weight more than any country I've ever been to. It is the size of New Jersey New Jersey so means this is New Jersey and yet it has a little bit of coastline very minimal. One town one mile coastline. And it's gorgeous so you can. You can get it you can go to the town of Piron. Cute Little Town Great Food. So you've got coastline there but what makes Lavinia so gorgeous to me is the fact that it's got everything else as well. It doesn't just have the coast. It has lake bled to this day. One of the most beautiful place. If you've ever been in the world and when I saw the picture of lake bled when I was like fourteen or fifteen years old I remember seeing it having no idea how to pronounce Lubiana. No idea where Slovenia was but saying I will go there one day. There is a lake with a church on an island in the middle of it. I will go there. We went their lives up to the hype in person cool so people know about that lake bled. They might have heard about you. Know they might not have known so. Many had a little bit of coastline. Same coast basically as Croatia. Just a lot less of it but what a lot of people don't realize is has the Alps in it as well so you go up to cranks Gorga. You got to some of these errors. You're in the Alps. We stayed at a hotel or this little awesome guest at the foot of the Alps. So you can say in a country. This is New Jersey. You have the Alps. You have stunningly gorgeous on you have one of the best lakes in the world and we haven't even gotten to the picture perfect little posted stand capital of Lube Lithuania. So to me. That feels like a rehearsed arguing. Were you practicing map before we did this? Podcast I thought this was be no preparation. No rehearsal it's been in my head for a long time. I told you on common with the big guns. Come with the beginning. Well for your lake bled. We have in Croatia about you know. I don't know a thousand islands. Yes that's right. Well over one thousand islands one of which has its very own little monastery on an island in the middle of the sea kirk monastery. We didn't actually go there. But I knew you were going to bring up like blood and when we were in Croatia this time we tried to go to put. Bj LAKES SO Croatia while it may not have the elps has so much natural beauty and it does have mountains are much smaller and if you drive quite a ways off the coast you can get to put bj leaks. We went however because it's so popular now we weren't able to get in because it's better to get a reservation. The next time we were able to go in the park was going to be like five hours from when we were there so we just decided to skip it however when we left there somebody said well. You should go to kirk waterfalls because there are actually bigger than put. Vj they're just not as touristed so you can see some of the most dramatic national parks in Croatia with these waterfalls in these pools of just like beautiful greenish blue water. I mean it's just stunning stuff. Just Google at people. I mean Lake Bled. D You have waterfalls.

"Yeah well that tell them that they're wrong about that. I don't know if I said a GNC your Adriatic Sea as possible the guy is corrected but I did say the Aegean Sea now I kind of know that it's the Adriatic Sea but it's possible I said Aegean Sea is the guy is apparently complaining claiming here it is his thing but if I did say the Aegean Sea. you know who's fault this is. who's the guy who said that he's here to cover for me when I make stroke related errors isn't that what you've claimed in fact for the reality is you don't know where the cruises go I got I made a mistake it but you don't even know even now what you have it's the a GS yes he does it or we're going at all I kind of need I kind of I know where we're going but I might have screwed up the X. way to go but I got a producer in here is supposed to be the backstop by this I mean for all he knows we're going to the South Pole. well I I know but I did say the wrong see about I think maybe I did I don't know maybe the guys just clay but it in the material that we have it's anyway it is the Adriatic Sea the Aegean Sea is the one that's like one C. over half you go if you go even farther to the east and you're going like a Greek Isles to a cruise and then on the other side agrees that's the energy in the Adriatic is a C. kinda get all managed like between Croatia Montenegro the lower part agrees that Italy on the other side that's the Adriatic Sea so I apparently according to this group said the eight ray said the Aegean Sea yesterday though is that a significant error I would normally say that those errors are not the kind of thing you call somebody out but I am pitching get all cruise it's saying that it's one of the most exotic places in the world to go so it probably would help if I actually was accurately explaining where I was to go I know the locations corrected you said see rock and I was describing the jet but I mean that's a dumbbell mistake that I actually I'm smarter than you know to make. yeah right I it's like I did it's not complete I didn't like yeah hi Zoe yeah right there I like when a bagel we're gonna be going to tree yes I mean I there's there's a limit to how but a big of a deal by could be but I mean. anyway it's the Adriatic Sea. as the guy points out. well. would you I admit I screwed this up and I also admit that you didn't correct me and I'll add I don't did anybody call in the air to correct it you might have just blown him off like you do what they do all these other corrections though. what day would you have car would you have corrected be if he said that or gives you are or not. if you but so in other words Paul's paving nobody else in the audience do either or maybe most of the other people in the audience artist petty is this guy here and figure we'll just let it slide it's not it's not that big of a deal. only I could do a cruise before she did end up getting bawled out for well I suppose I I kind of think I have it coming but the guy didn't have to be as obnoxious as he was right. well I am worried about it I brought it up here yeah after what it for five minutes anyway. the reason it's part it is I was trying to specifically describe because a lot of people may not know what the Dalmatian coast is so then to get the C. raga describing what it's odd is a rather substantive error in my defense they both start with a and on the back of the website itself including a letter that I wrote an introduction I use the term Adriatic Sea assault IBM. it's what it is the cruise starts in Rome and then heads unlike a lot of cruises that started role we don't go to the western river of magnetic created we don't go all the way around the loop over way over to the east we do go up to the Adriatic Sea add essentially what got down what is called the Dalmatian coast which is absolutely beautiful it's mostly in the Balkans the old Yugoslavia broke it up parts in there you know with Montenegro Horatia it cetera yeah starting in Trieste which is at the very very well built. don't really know that Italy essentials goes up to the Alps amid this is a very very kept the Norris. east tip of Italy is work yes there is and the kind of work our way down all the way around the coast I think we do a stop in the middle and it's not in the exact order of this but that we go down that entire coast which is absolutely beautiful it's that it that I may should cost if you see any of these sea shore lied the shop's shots of the sea shore of Montenegro operation it's just spectacular we have numerous sports I'd their ad in the second half of the cruise we then loop around back into the Mediterranean the U. Noticias by the way you know what I see is is a definition of a C. I. Noticias de Noticias. what are you what do you know when you say you know but I bet you don't know. I see I might be wrong and the student which case the guy to come back and claim that I'm an idiot I believe that in order to be a C. you have to. spill into essentially into an ocean legacy is. a body of water it Daddy is. shares the water obviously without land breaking it up into an ocean for example the Caribbean Sea you know it is part of the Atlantic Ocean and. the Adriatic Sea is part of the entire I guess Mediterranean basin although the Mediterranean is a C. itself because the Mediterranean with the little narrow in that that it has does connect to the Atlantic Ocean anyway we did look around the other way and we stop in Sicily which is just a beautiful island with incredible culture add bed we had north on another because the of all because that's the because that's on the south western shore of Italy pass Naples and then had up to include our world for people who are interested in doing this cruise and tour is offering and I don't know if they're sold out or not I don't think they are extensions that both they and you could do an extension and stay longer than the rest of the group in Rome or you can start earlier and we have a disk a multi day extension in the Tuscan region to go to Tuscany which is dream of a lot of people out that's not the base cruise that we have to offer because that it would be extremely log with people who want to do that that option is out there but for the regular cruise itself June fourteenth of the twenty seventh it's Rome to Rome in terms of beginning and ending but the actual I. temporary itself takes us off into this donation coast region and so on little bit later out of the program we're gonna be talking less about the destination and more about the celebrity edge which is. I'd say the most buzzed about cruise ship. since what I. the royal Caribbean mega ships that came out a few years ago they they do yeah they got a lot of buzz to I can't say that it's more than that this is just it's just kind of different I beat which pretty much happened in the spectacular beauty incredible ships the last number of years but who can do this was expected to take and the celebrity ship is more of a revolutionary thinking which is a lot of things that are just different in terms of the environment of the odd the odds of the ship enhanced by all of that technology so we'll focus on that worked the Rapides program now let me get back to you a quick reminder. four o'clock or a little bit after six o'clock a little bit after the texted words in the I heart radio music festival flyaway contest that contest of course ends Friday because the trip itself is next week at the weekend after this what they're getting back to this whole thing with regard to. trump Eadbald as I said I could sit here and do. dumbbell radio is bolted a blowhard. and a devoted a prima Donna didn't understand that he was working for trump is trump incapable of tolerating any dissent within his administration is he gonna fire every single person that works for them why is there always I mean I could do that topic. I just don't think it's all that interesting. because I think that. the analysis of that part of it is obvious trump does have a hard time keeping people but I think that's part of his philosophy he wants to bring in people are strong ideas and when they no longer needed just as he said he's going to get read a book. that's the way that he wants to do it further more prompt doesn't like having his staff telemovie can and cannot do. I mean he's an authoritarian guy in terms of his private company that he ratted in terms the presidency further more he was elected as president added states and if you've been following John bolted in his career he is an extremely opinionated guy and. obviously something of a pre but data. I could not get anybody to that some people might argue that I have a pretty but not but they've had these clashes particularly with regard to. the situation in a rad and now this latest forget situation with regard to Afghanistan I think the second part of this the foreign policy perspective at the trump doctrine with the president's tried to accomplish here which is some at times at odds with other members of his own party is a much more interesting questions so let's go do it. trump wants to get out of Afghanistan..

"Live from the seaborne odyssey Athens, we're headed over to bologna after a live broadcast next week for a live remote from there. We're going to cover motor valley Ferrari, Lamborghini, the food scene. All of that, then we're going go up to Venice and take seaboards Adriatic Sea cruise to Croatian Montenegro Greece gets our first cruise seaborn. So I'm curious. What do you like about their offerings? Caroline as compared to some of the other operators, you just mentioned silver say they're competitor anything that suggests a must do seaborn ship for one is absolutely lovely, and you can just go and use the have to have a treatment, but I would recommend that I think the dining is what born as has carved out at its knees. But the funniest thing that I've seen on C, which is, is a little bit more. Formal Mark casual. Very contemporary in design, but the passengers the biggest thing on board is daily trivia people crazy about it out. They meet people on the ship, and it's a lot of fun to get involved in everybody just goes nuts for it. Graf trivia. Yeah, you would be shot people get really competitive. They form teams meet people it just I didn't do it. The first couple of days that I regretted it because it really brought people together and the other part of the ship that I love is people in square, which when it was introduced this particular class ships with revolutionary, it's sort of a town square, but it's a library. It's a bar. It's a coffee cafe. Got the customer service desk. It's got the shop. It's got the most beautiful Peres off the back. It's outside. That's actually we're going to broadcast about there. It's a beautiful beautiful hip. All right, Carolyn, let's talk a Lasca because I think if it's not a Caribbean. Cruise if it's not that exploring are forty ninth state is certainly very popular for people. It's a huge destination. Are you a fan of the small ships for Alaska, and what are some recommendations that you have for travelers who've never been in are going to do it with cruise? About Alaska is really the only way you can see Alaska comprehensively on a group because, you know, for example, Juneau, the state capital doesn't even have any kind of way to drive in or out of the city, very difficult. So I think the thing about Alaska is, I think for first time crews a larger ship is a great experience. Because you, you got all your, your big hotel with you. You get ten to get out into the country and experience it. But once you've gotten your appetite. Kind of excited about Alaska. Then I think it's smaller crews is a great way to, to really kinda get away from the, the more popular places and really have experience with locals and and getting out on the water. And I think Alaska's a really good example to go back to what you said earlier in terms of these really immersive itenerary. They're doing a lot of the cruise lines are really doing a great job getting people off the ships, and really immersive like the idea, they also can do the lay combo the train you can take the cruise ship humane. A lot of the lot of the cruise lines have their own hotels. And so you're going to get off for a couple of days..
