"Make it awesome. Meckler. Excuse me. Number 93 Lawrence guys on the bench with the mask on. He's probably done for the day. I wouldn't I wouldn't mind having him with us next weekend. I'm gonna be in. Yeah, we're gonna be in Las Vegas for the Raiders Colts, and he's from Las Vegas. He's a native is attacked two on his right shoulder. That says, Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas. Now, when you say you'd like to have him with us. What are you implying that he would know his way around. He would keep us from going to places we shouldn't or on the other hand, 35 with pressure, they dump it off left side heckler trying to get progress. He's only going to get back to the line of scrimmage. That's it. Adrian Phillips again, along with Torres Hall, and on fourth down, one would assume that the charges will go forward forth and four from their own. Excuse me from the New England 30. Good drive here and engineered. Tell you in the other games, Rams are starting to blow out the Cardinals 38 21 in the fourth and Seattle trying for a comeback. Against the Giants. They're down 17 12 of the minute. 15 to go in Seattle. Here. It's fourth down and four for the Chargers. From the 30 of New England trips to the right shotgun. Reman Rush and Herbert still going to get sacked back at the 40 Adam Butler again voice at two straight, tremendous games last week against Arizona and today here against the Chargers. And New England will take over when we come back time out on the field a 13 to go in this one. Patriots 38 charges Nothing. You're listening to the National Football League on Sports USA..

"All right. Now that that is out of the way Adam. We wanted to talk about some of these free agent signings for the Patriots. Obviously the Patriots lost a lot more than they gained this year and free agency, but there was still a few names they grabbed and I want to start with Adrian Phillips safety-linebacker hybrid type player on the back end of defense a lot of talk about Kyle Van Noy Jamie Collins elandon Roberts and log After the Patriots have a linebacker. Now that those guys are out the door and a lot of ways Adrian Phillips is kind of a pseudo linebacker in today's NFL and might be able to fill some of those roles. Yeah, but I think he's I mean, he's been successfully as a pro bowl or All-Pro at his last stop. So he's a good player. I think this is interesting because I think the Patriots tend to try draft safeties and you know, I don't you know, it seems like a like a good pick up, you know, this is a guy that can do lot of different things and I think I'm glad that they're getting this guy from free agency rather than trying to drive too cuz I feel like sometimes if you draft a guy and you want him to do all these different things off he gets a little bit, you know overwhelmed with the numbers here number of tasks. They throw this way this seems like somebody who can do a bunch of things for Thursday. Defence and in the market overwhelmed I think it's a pretty solid pick up a great. It's a Ford down player too because you made of all pro team a few years ago as a special teamer in the kicking game. So it's a really good special teams player as we know the Patriots love that sort of thing, but it's his contributions on defense that have me excited. This is a guy that can play in the slot. He can play a little bit of linebacker. You can play safety in certain respects, like intermediate zones, you're not going to put him in the back end of the field and play center field with him. But you're going to do a little bit of different types zone defense with him and have him play robber having play a hooked zone or things of that nature. But watching it is tape. It was really exciting to see how he covered tight ends. One-on-one. Which would Patrick Chung last year. Maybe taking a little bit of step back the Patriots have been searching a little bit for a guy that can really stop tight ends or a second option to really stop tight ends. I think Adrian Phillips is a guy that could do that. Like I said off the top of this they needed some holes to fill out linebacker and that Thursday. Second level of the defense. I think that they're looking at Phillips as basically a linebacker just in the safety body similar to how they use Patrick Chung so money backer a slot Defender special teams, come back and kicks do that sort of thing. It's a good pickup. It's a sneaky Patriots type signing. We're not going to break the bank. It's not this huge free-agent name, but it's just kind of a good veteran football player wage the point that you brought up that when you draft a guy and you ask them to play slot you ask him to play in the Box..

"Guy make your fifty three not ready to play arianne springs impressed in training camp <hes> both as a db playing corner and safety but he's been really quiet. This preseason season face on of course is the guy who was a special teams contributor last year had some snaps on defense so obviously earns a corner spot here too you and again. It's it's jeff richards but only because trevor williams just hasn't played yeah the situation the trevor williams is really starting to remind me of jerry tortue when anthony lynn i got here where he was constantly hurt every year before a touchy joe or before lynn got here than the year he got here. He was finally healthy. He seemed like he was finally ready to contribute and he was inactive every week because anthony lynn was basically just like i can't trust you to stay healthy. You're going to be on the field so you're just not going to be on the field and it's starting to feel that way with with trevor williams oh he's close to practicing is close to practice and he's getting better and then he doesn't practice and he's inactive for the game so i just doesn't seem like this is the kind of guy that anthony lynn is going to want to rely on even though he was so good two years ago. It just seems like he's running out of options. I mean how do you rely on at this point all right so let's finish defense and its safety. I got them keeping five. I've got them keeping ray. Sean jenkins adrian phillips the sierra jaylen watkins and rodrick teamer so with during james out. I think they gotta add another safety and roger. Tamer ratio and jank has done enough to secure that free safety spot a made a pretty good play against the seahawks play where he was trailing but able to catch up in knocker ball away way and i think lynn was talking about how he doesn't wanna keep agent phillips at strong safety full time so what i'm assuming is that they're going to have phillips as as a strong safety in base and march him down in his nickel linebacker spot the rest of the time which means you need some safety.

"I think he's come a long way. I don't necessarily think that his dip in production is his fault. I mean that first year, you know, he was playing without Keenan teens back the last two years that's had a lot to do with his his different production. They also the back Salat they throw to Michael what there's a lot of options to throw to. I I it's hard to spread the ball around. So I don't think it's all his fault. I think is numbers will probably go up somewhat in a new offense is the number one guy a clear cut number one guy. But I don't think he's a number one receiver, and he seems to think he is. So I think he's gone. And I think the chargers realize that you know, they can go draft somebody use one hundred three young receivers to replace him in a similar role, and they'll be fine. So, unfortunately, I think Tirol was gone. He has earned his new contract. But it's just not going to be here. Okay. So next up these safety slash db slash linebacker Adrian Phillips. I'm reciting Adrian Phillips the team I think is definitely reciting Adrian Phillips. He is. I think you could make a case that Adrian is the second most important person on that defense, or at least was down the stretch next to Derwin James, certainly top three with James and Bosa. He was phenomenal and the growth. That he showed this year was just incredible in terms of playing linebacker running with tyreek hill and the second Kansas City game. He ran with Jerry cook cover all kinds of tight ends. I mean, he does everything in the middle of that defense. And he is arguably the smartest if not the second smartest guy on the defense. So he's homegrown. He's been with the team for five years. They're going to want to keep them. I think they're even going to be willing to overpay to keep him. And he is going to get paid. You know as a all pro special teams player a Pro Bowl special teams player. He was first team all football writers. On special teams. He was also fantastic on defense. The numbers are going to get a little crazy. I think you know, they're going to look. They're gonna look at Jalil die kind of set the floor the contract, they gave a die. They're going to start there. And it's going to go up. And I think you're probably looking ultimately it calms from Darian Stewart the safety vents Williams linebacker for the Steelers and Todd Davis the linebacker for. The Broncos as guys who were solid cops for what Adrian's going to get. And I think you're looking at something and narrow it of. Four years twenty six and a half million dollars with eight and a half million guaranteed. And that is a mouthful for a guy who we were debating last year. Should they even bring him back as an exclusive rights free agent? As now wasn't as exclusive rights free agent. But we were talking about him as an undrafted free agent, excuse me. And we went back and forth on should they offer him one year three years, and should it be two million three million? Now, we're talking about him getting up to seven million dollars a year. So he has come a long way he is earned it. And he is one of three guys that I would say they absolutely have to resign. If they're going to have a successful off-season. Yeah. I would say Adrian Phillips is probably priority. Number one in free agency for the chargers. At least in my book the impact on the field on defense special teams. He got that Pro Bowl nod like you mentioned the progression man, just continues to grow the versatility really makes them commodity on this defense and the mini shaves. His defense can take with him on the field. So I know Phillips technically a starter on the roster. But he logs those starter snaps because he's a db plane linebacker. He might not he kinda might be peculiar fit for another. Team. So the charters might be lucky in that respect in that some teams might not know what to do with them because he's kind of almost out of position it can do so many things, but nobody knows quite what he is..

"Can't see these to him. Yeah. I mean problem is that the charges are twenty five million of cap space. They don't have any money, but they have a team. So I don't think they have lose anyone crucial this offseason that not to my knowledge at least. So this may be this next season. Maybe their last hope before they need to do some serious changes easer the players that they have. So they have twenty five million. These are the players that are on that are leaving our contracts are expiring Brandon me Bain, tyrel Williams and Tonio gates Jason variet- Adrian Phillips, Denzil Perryman. Gina smith. Kyle manual not a whole lot of big name players. They have their core walked up. They don't have any player Adrian Phillips, maybe one or two starters here that are hitting frequency. But ultimately like you mentioned they have a really good team, and they're all under contract pretty much. Yes. It can retain pretty much the most of their team from what we've seen. It's it's a nice. It's a nice problem is though. I don't know. What's wrong talk to me? I feel like a lot of things with the chargers way this year. So yes, they have a good thing going. But also rivers may might have had one of his best years that was kind of weird. Like, do we think they're going to suffer the same fortunes next year? Are they going to benefit from? I don't know the same health. Yeah. Melvin gordon. Miss a few games. But he always does like rivers was healthy most that defenses pretty healthy. They missed some guys some guys than I are very being healthy at his age is incredible. And just his ability to play that. Well, they will get hunter Henry back. They had a couple of guys are they're getting back. I think they're obviously going to be a favourite to go back to the playoffs. They're going to be a team. That's. Top ten odds to win the Super Bowl. When in the it's probably topic. Obviously the goal is like between the chiefs and the charters who's winning the Anna AFC west other thing too is Jeff can this team look at how good this team was on the road this year. I don't think they're going to do that again, and they really don't have a home field advantage. So it's hard to give them the benefit of the dealt when you're talking about like can they get over the hump? Can they win one or two more games? Like sure they can. But it's hard to do that. When you don't have a home where you can dominate right? Yeah. True. I guess the last thing we go talk about though. Eagles. They are going to have the most interesting off season of the four teams when she say, yes, this is a lot different than the last. We talked about because we're talking about foles. Versus whence. Will. I think fulls will be. Isn't it weird that they can opt in to him, but he can buy himself out for two million? It's like a weird two billion. No, not Bill. You said billion. I said million you said, Billy. I did not. I heard a being there. That's fine. That's because you're not paying attention. That is a lie. Look at whatever anyways. They are twelve million under right now, they're in the red. There have the worst cap scenario of any team. They are what you say in crisis mode. So even if they have the. I don't know idea of keeping Nick foles that is shot down because they just don't have the money. They couldn't even sign him. Even if they didn't have Carson Wentz. They couldn't even keep them. That is insane. Like, this is not looking good for them long run. Is it they could cut TIMMY Jernigan? He would save them seven million. I guess it could also on Jeffrey they need a lot more than just seven million. They have a lot of players making way too much money. Who is making nine million from them next year Nelson. Al gore. I can see why golden Tate is a free agent. These not come back. They could cut Michael Bennett. I could see that..

"They can hopefully make their to fix some of those issues, particularly the one in the punt in the punt blocking punt protection scheme because you know, that's something Bella chicks gonna notice and try to take advantage of. So that's something. They definitely have to get fixed. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. All right. So let me end on a positive note and we've talked about adjustments. We kinda talked a little bit about whiz offense a lot about gusts. I wanna talk about the man at the helm. It's talk about Anthony Lynn and his growth as a head coach 'cause it's paid off in the playoffs. Right now. The Justice he may not only in this game. But also these long, but coach Lynn a really starting to pay dividends during the season there. Some key moves that really carry this team into the playoffs. And I know you mentioned a couple earlier, I think he mentioned it on Twitter, but I'll give you three one moving desk. King to punt return, obviously, Travis Benjamin was a wholesale negative as returner they answered it as king after. Benjamin injury. King has spark the return game. He's a threat to break. What at any point? He set up the office of multiple short feels on Sunday. Like, you mentioned a wanna say the second long one was after the half. And that's when the blocked kick happen. So I don't know if points came off both of those, but at least one of them still game short fields regardless number two putting Adrian Phillips a linebacker spot. No single charger player has made such a monumentally in their progression. During the season more than Adrian Philip says, he's become a leader. That defense really started to move a lot faster. This defense could stop the run better. When Phillips was thrust in the lineup after the Denzel Perriman injury fills on fire Sunday again had the interception fumble recovery. Three pass deflections. Another one cutting Caleb Sturgis and keeping Michael badgley? You mentioned badgley Caleb Sturgis was a mass before. And after his injury could have been easy to kinda just roll with them because you paid him. He had the money you wanna stick with your guy. But they stash badge. Early on the practice squad. Just in case when enough was enough with Sturgis in came badgley since then the rookie record the longest field going chargers history. Most field goals in a game in chargers history. The most points in a game in chargers history. He kicked the game winner, Pittsburgh. He's ninety percent on the year. He was five or six on Sunday in his first ever playoff game. If it weren't for that double clutch by Donnie Jones, maybe six for six knows. But key moves that have richly benefited this team making a playoff run an early on even back to earlier this year. We were talking about how anthem was getting out kosher little bit. And Gus was and wis was we go back to week one charters loose the chiefs at home. Tyreek, kill goes bananas. He had won sixty nine for two touchdowns, the rematch wind gets vindication. Gets the win KC. They kill away for only forty two yards. We eleven charges that case keenum Broncos hang around. They win on a last second field goal rematch in week seventeen. Anthony gets his vindication again. Charter stop the Broncos twenty three two nine. Keenum was nowhere now week sixteen ravens beat him up on the ground. It was just a terrible showing by the chargers multiple turnovers. And they let Mark Andrews hurt them long on TD Sunday in the plas when a matters Anthony Lynn again, getting vindication. The run game goes dark. Andrew is nowhere to be seen Lynn is grown as a coach all year made a few key calls in the game to go back to that fourth and inches. If you kick the field goal there. This is a whole different ballgame. They go for it. They score the touchdown. Then after that, they go for to another big move. Even if they didn't get it. The right move alternately. That's put the game away Lynn kicks field goal. And this is this is a totally different games a lot closer than it already was now, let's just hope aunty Lynn has learned from last season week eight loss against England. And he gets vindication. This Sunday in New England in the playoffs. Against the patriots. Yeah..

"They had one total sack all game long shadow to Sam tabby to who. I thought probably played better than any Lyman on Sunday. Again, not perfect. But did a nice job on the Daria Smith. Most of that game. He had a second half last time they met shut him down. Most of the time that offense of line really gave rivers a chance and they should have helped team win that game on that last carry on that phantom holding call Russell Kun. But either way the line was focused handle their business. And this was when it really counted. And they answered the call so good on the offense of line. Again. Not perfect. There was still some pressure on rivers. But for the most part most time on Sunday. They did a good job at front. Absolutely. Yeah. They they did a much better job and to your point Garrett. Sam tabby was the fifth highest rank chargers off. Player according to PF on Sunday that makes us he was the only Lyman that made that list. Yeah. I thought he was the best lineman on Sunday. Yeah. He played very well. Then that's another thing. I mentioned Justin Jones you get that performance out of at same heavy. You're getting guys, you know, not at the bottom of the depth chart, but guys that you wouldn't expect to make major contributions making meaningful contribution. Yeah. And that that's huge time. Absolutely. All right. Let's finish these headlines off what's your last one here? So my last one I was I had all positive you stole my pasta. No, you're going to go negative after a playoff win. Don't do things. Just some things that I think they need to clean up a little bit. Couple of things that I noticed watching the film after the game is they've got a little bit of a leak in the middle of their pump protection. Schemes. Buckle and blocked punt in the third quarter. He nearly blocked the first punt in a game. And I think there might have been one other one that he almost blocked, and they're basically just having him weight behind the line and shoot through the gap after he committed there man, I think Adrian Phillips saved a couple their punts from potentially being blocked by by Alan. It's the same kind of delayed blitz that we saw from the Rams in week three. Now, it's popping back up again. So something they need to get cleaned up. Obviously we talked about Donnie Jones bobbling. The one snap kinda give him a pass because he was only one out of six but still he needs to tighten that up a little bit. And I thought was game plan is as good a job as gusted game planning. I thought was his game plan was pretty vanilla. And it looked like a game plan that spoke to really coach that didn't think his lying could handle what they had to face. And he just didn't do any planning. I mean there is there really no changes from the first game. We saw a little bit of running outside, which was a nice change. But they couldn't get the ball Allen. They couldn't get the ball down field. They they still are not featuring the running backs in the passing game to the extent that they were earlier in the season. And I don't know if that's because they're afraid they're still injured and they're trying to protect them or if they've just lost track of it. But they just can't get the balls to the backs in space, which was something that really fueled the passing game early in the year. So that's something that I hope they address I still would like to see them play with more tempo. I feel like they just bog things down. It slows them down at times and gets to prevents him from getting into a rhythm and the one complaint on defense is a little worried about Casey Hayward because he did not play very well on Sunday. I think you know, he had the one pass breakup that led to Adrian Phillips interception, but he gave up two touchdowns there were at least two or three other times where it looked like he struggled with double moves and got beat deep. He basically couldn't run with Michael Crabtree. Who as we talked about in the? Preview can't run. So that's a little worrisome. So just some things to keep an eye on some some adjustments..

"In the mar Miller, and they bottle that the running game Baltimore average two hundred twenty nine rushing per game with Lamar Jackson quarterback charters them the ninety on Sunday. And we saw some unbelievable performances on Sunday. Melvin Ingram seven to the game of his life seven tackles two tackles for loss. Two sacks four fumble had a fumble recovery. Seal the game also had a really nice toss in the stands when he got fumble recovery through it and it stands about three sections up. Perfect spiral. I mean, they had talked about how he had quite an arm in the off season. That was a pretty good toss. And that one Adrian Phillips interception fumble recovering the first half. He had three past the. Elections. Joey Bosa had a sec is show. How to sack the rookie? Justin Jones how to sack Chattanooga. Whoa. Sue sealed the game with that strip on the Mark Jackson Derwin, James was everywhere. Michael Davis some beautiful pass deflections almost had an interception. Those DB's and something that needs to be mentioned a little bit that I haven't heard mentioned yet is that those get swallowed at the second level if it weren't for those defensive tackles in that bear front upfront. It just seemed like those guys were going man on man, and they were winning their battles up front. And it was allowing those DB's whether it's Jalil die at the linebacker spot or ager Phillips or Derwin James or whoever was coming downhill. We're able to come down hill because they were creating a wall up front so a big on those defensive tackles, and they were just the unsung heroes on Sunday. And I say this with and you know, Jamie, you've already heard me say this. I know that you echo the same sentiments. But I say this was sincerity, maybe. No, not the exact same words. But in all sincerity, and you could probably quote me when Gus Bradley gets fired this blows up in my face, but the game plan. The Gus ran out on Sunday is the type of innovative game plan. You see from coaches that changes defense's in the NFL for years to come this game in particular will project Gus Bradley on that path to head coaching conversation. Again, it just seems like every potential head coach has that calling card. You know, whether you're offense of mine or defensive mind, your QB whisper or you took an offense led by Tim tebow to the play offs. There's. There's always something to point to. And you know, Gus Bradley had the legion of boom this game in particular beating John Harbaugh and Lamar Jackson in the playoffs and coaching them would be Gus Bradley's calling card and the other thing that gets them into the conversation was this quarters package. Now Gus went against the grain here, and we've never seen it in this capacity. Now, obviously, you see the NFL kind of moving in a more hybrid get your athletes on the field type of package here. But the way that he went all in and said, we're playing all seventy Bs and we're just getting our best athletes on the field to beat you with speed or best athletes. Angela. Yeah. I was beautiful. He's got DB's taking on angles against blocks rather than having your like traditional Mike take on offense of linemen head on to clear path. That's beautiful. They've got during James Adrian Phillips, even Dez king. They're all being used Swiss army knife. So line them up near the line of scrimmage letting them roam a little bit. And you don't know who's coming who's going. There's this big guessing game. And this this move was way ahead of the curve for Gus. And is just unreal. When we saw it on Sunday, we had we kinda mention maybe we we see a little bit more Raisch on Jenkins playing over James Brown. We didn't think this much racial Jenkins. But the absolute right move. And the chargers have been doing this. They've been getting more athletes with Derwin the Kaiser white who's more of a hybrid. They're wanting to put them all on the field and be fast and physical, and though it may not last long for the chargers we'll see going into Foxborough this weekend. But he did something special on Sunday and hats off to Gus. And this is just an unbelievable move in an innovative concept for Gus Bradley to do it in the playoffs and work to such a success against ravens. Yeah. It was a huge change. I think it's something that I kinda get the feeling that something they've been building towards for at least a couple of seasons..

"Your team advance. It's so Nick most impressive team performance from wild card. Weekend was blank to me. It's the team that won their game in the first twenty minutes of their game the Napoli colts. They ran the ball for a hundred and fifty plus yards on team that hadn't given up one hundred yard rusher. All season. Andrew luck. Didn't make hardly any mistakes. They made to shown Watson look like a young inexperienced quarterback to cults were dumb on both sides of the ball. I'm gonna give it Tandy. I'm gonna go with the LA chargers. They dominated Baltimore. People will calling for flacco Adrian Phillips, the safety who played inside the cavity to build come up with this. Great defense. Seventy B's Gus Bradley in the dumb in an Anthony Linda coach came up with Derwin James plan from sideline the sideline what they did to the Baltimore Ravens and taking them out of that. I thought was the most dominant performance this weekend. All right wildcard weekend wasn't glamorous for every team involved with the Texans. Seahawks. Ravens and bears all seen their seasons. Come to an end see the team you are. Surprised to see get eliminated. This weekend was blank the bears. The bears came into the playoffs rolling plain at home. That defense. We thought we could be the most frightening defense or could be the defense specially to build a slowdown the saints and that offense not able to get the kick there at the end. There's no no need for them to be disappointed as a young football team with no experience. I believe this experience will be valuable going forward. They get that kicked to go through. It's a whole different story in the playoff or they get the two point conversion touchdown, potentially. Hold of that was a critical play that I think would enough. Attention was paid to say the bears as well. I thought the bears were going to the NFC championship game. I thought they were the second best team in the NFC and a team that had a real chance to actually win the Super Bowl based on a great defense. Good running game in a quarterback who we saw it at the end can make all the throws. Now also make some bad decisions. But the bears to be one in done to lose to a nine and seventy. Eagles team. They hadn't lost a game all year when they allowed fewer than twenty four points. They allowed sixteen and lost that to stomach punch the bears once reprise me the most all right with wild car weekend. Now in the books, we can shift focus to the divisional round where each team will look to continue their road to the Super Bowl. So Nick divisional round matchup. You're most excited to watch next weekend is blank, I'm gonna remove where I'm from from this just as a football fan is a guy that watches the whole legal saints because the story lines are spectacular. We are either going to get drew Brees one step away from reaching the Super Bowl and really having this minting moment of his career or the Nick foles magical carpet ride continues one of these two things is going to happen. So for that reason eagles saints. The most compelling matchup of the week. I think the colts in the way the colts plan. You've you've had the surprising numbers as far as colds defense being number one in the league since since week seven's week number seven, Andrew luck resurrected his career Frank right going. Into Kansas City. They got a lot of nightmares. Kansas City fans are terrified I thought. This was the worst match because I believe that luck in that ball control Marlin MAC that they can get that chiefs team planet a faster pace because they're not going to have the normal possessions. I let's end with the college football national title game. That's taking place tonight to undefeated teams squaring off in Alabama. And Clemson and fell prospects all over the field. Chris Carter the player you are most looking forward to seeing tonight. I'm gonna go on go on the defensive side and Quinten LIAM's the defensive tackle he could be the number one pick in the draft. He's a space ater that can also put pressure on the quarterback. He's number ninety two wearing crimson anti tonight. Looking forward to seeing if he can get after your guy Lawrence accorded, the sunshine, sunshine, that's my picture ever Lawrence. We've seen this match up three straight years..

"Adrian Phillips did the officials call it a fumble. I believe that. They did. Yes. They did. But chargers out the ball in the red zone. Seven plays three fumbles for the Baltimore. Ravens this one. Not Lamar Jackson. This one goes to the running back. I'm not sure that's Dixon. Yeah. Yeah. Dixon. He he grabbed it from Lamar and then was hit by Melvin Ingram. Okay. So look this is edge pressure. They're crashing hard down from the defensive ends. And it was Bosa and Melvin Ingram both making contact with Dixon in the backfield. Melvin high boasts alot Melvin got his hand rip the arm on the ball side, and it comes loose. So Adrian Phillips picks up they retain possession on the fifteen going in chargers, alerting play now still rivers as I ten. Alright. So they take over at their fifteen. We'll keep you up to date the first play a hand off to Melvin Gordon. That's going to go for about four yards down to the eleven in your opinion in a situation. Like this. How important is six versus three. I know any points in a game. Like this. We've talked about that are gold by the way flag down on that first down play. We'll let you know what it is. But when you're given that short of a field, and in this kind of a situation how important is six versus three wrote a tweet last night. And it's about what you need to do against young. Quarterbacks. And this is how it goes. What you absolutely need to do is get an early lead get pressure spying contain that quarterback in stop the run. And so if you you have an opportunity there's I mean, no lead-safe with as an excessive playmakers. Lamar Jackson is. But if you have an opportunity to go up six year, it is of dire consequences if you don't put any leaders great anyway. Well, and now it's first and goal because there was a personal foul on the ravens after the run. So move at half the distance down to the six and the chargers will have first and goal for Philip rivers who is playing one of the most important games of his career right now. There's no question Gordon will get the first down carrying get down to the four second goal coming up from the four we now know where the winner of this game is going. They will go to New England. I think odyssey you can't look past this particular game. But we've talked about it this week. How Philip rivers in is a lustrous career does not really. Have any signature moments in signature wins signature moment was playing on a tornado Yellen in New England. But they lost the game a win today. An opportunity to go slay a dragon like New England next week. It's really an opportunity for him to give some people some memories. They don't currently have. There's no question about it. I remember when I was playing with the chargers we won a wildcard round game in two thousand thirteen and he had an opportunity be paint manning with Denver at home in Denver. And we came up short that day in the divisional round. Melvin Gordon takes it down to around the two yard out. Maybe even down to the one. Yeah. It's going to be third and goal. Let's see where they Mark. That. Gordon got a good push. You're on the right side. And he's called it the one and a half is just short of the one yard line and so third down. And although Melvin Gordon limps off the field, and this in fact, he doesn't even get off the field, and he is holding the left knee. Remember that about five six weeks ago? He had. Had a significant MC L sprain which caused him to miss to football games, including the one at at Kansas City and then last week playing in a game that didn't end up mattering much in Denver. He suffered an ankle sprain. That he seems to have worked through this one. Looks more like the need in the ankle it it definitely does. And an MCI's. Are tricky things I've played on tornadoes MCI calls throughout my career. You know, it just varying levels. Right. You get a great to tear. It's not all the way through a great three. Well that'll be your season. And so they got his legs splayed out on the field right now. And the training staff is circled around him. And look the the knee. It's different for everybody. I mean, there's some players who throughout their careers. I mean would amaze you what they're able to play through. We're just talking about Philip rivers on a torn ACL able to play and have a good game in a playoff game against New England. So for Melvin Gordon different position running back as we. We all know when when you're missing that lateral ability, the ability to plant sharply and change directions. It's a it's a key to the position. And so that'll that'll factor here if they keep them in if he's injured still, but they have depth at the position just needed axon running back on north western rookie who filled in from Sunday night against the Steelers after the injury that Thursday night or both wins on the road. Yeah. The the Pittsburgh game. Obviously, I you know, he he factored into that. One largely in the in the second half the Kansas City game. He was the starting running back. They won in Arrowhead, which Jackson and Austin is active today was questionable all week. He's he's out there and available as well. And yeah, just so Justin Jackson third on the depth chart behind us an actor who had a neck injury that that led to Justin Jackson scoring his first career touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in Pittsburgh Sunday night football. And then you know, as you mentioned the Thursday. Tonight against Kansas City with the game between. Yeah. This is a team that's been tested in the offensive backfield. You could say the same for Baltimore. We'll see what happens with this. Melvin Gordon injury will factor greatly. I'll tell you where will in the passing game because he's clearly elite when it comes to getting out. They can split them out. They can line them up in the slot. He's the most experienced back in this offense. And so that says something in the playoffs. Trust me, experience matters. But the depth of this position has been tested this season. And it has it has proved to be of value. This not a death blow? Now, you also start to think about not just today if they're able to win is Melvin Gordon able to play next week. You know, if you are going to go to a New England. You'd like to be full strangle. Yeah. For a football game like that. So also, let's go into the mind and Anthony Lynn right now and Gordon is off the field. He's walking under his own power. But he's headed to the locker room. I'll say he's walking slowly with a significant lab. This does not look like. Not look like the type of guy or type of a situation where all of a sudden he's going to be able to fly back out on the field. I'm not optimistic about today. After watching that it's third and goal here for the chargers as they get set up and Philip rivers is under center in it is Austin actor behind him, and he will get it. And he will not get their he'll lose a yard. So what I was gonna say, let's go into the mind. And Anthony Lynn being where you on the field. If you don't get it on third down. Are you doing field goal or going for it right here? I know what I would do. What would you do kick the field goal? I would tell. Yeah. I again want as as big of a lead as you can because Lamar Jackson. He could get this offense going. They can stretch the field with his arm. They they they did we badly. Miss a facemask penalty. That was head got spun around like bobble heads, pretty obvious. Yeah. I playoffs. No. Especially near the goal line count on that. Yeah. Referees officials. They don't want to get in a way of a scoring play. The charges will go for three. Michael badgley? Will split the uprights. The chargers have three nothing advantage. It might have felt different. If accurate even let's say gained a half yard, like if we're inside the one, you know, maybe you go for it. He ended up almost all the way back at the three. I think that's the smart move as you said points or gold today. So they do get the three also say this now if Melvin Gordon has gone for the day, this is just me, and I know you, and I don't necessarily see this exactly the same way. If I was going to go on third and goal with a hand off the middleweight. They did I would have gone with Justin Jackson. I would not have gone Austin actor when than Gordon is out. What I love seeing the chargers do is. Is injected Jackson into the Gordon role and let her stay in his role, which is third down change of pace. Catch passes out of the backfield. Is that opportunities to sorta take a one role and be a traditional straight ahead in between the tacos running back? He's now had a lot of success this year. Well, you know, I don't I don't disagree because that's true. I just think that a lot of what we're seeing is when when Melvin Gordon isn't in there, you see a lot less respect for the passing game when they're in certain sets. Now, you go to tie one back. You sorta do have to still protect the past with Melvin Gordon back there because he's such a versatile back with Exeter back. They're not as much he's not as big of a danger in the passing game from those run set. So I think you crab line of scrimmage, especially at the goal line. But yet no the production hasn't been there. I'm actually a little surprised that they didn't decide to pass throw the ball on on on guys. I run from scrimmage in his second year first ever playoff game is Austin is in. I mean giving him the the first Harry near the goal line. That's a big moment against this defense. Stout up the middle. Let's tell Philip rivers. Hey, if it ain't open throw it out the back of endzone, and we'll kick. The field. Yeah. Let's rip Anthony land. Yeah. That was his fault. One hundred percent, Wisconsin. Very, okay. So the ravens have to feel thrilled right now. They just ran their ninth play. They fumbled three times. And the chargers got all the way to the one yard line. However, it's only three to nothing. I mean, honestly could be fourteen zip right now the conversation. I'm having with Lamar Jackson if I'm Harbaugh is I go. Hey, listen. We got it out of the way. You know what? I mean, this is yet we are over. Yeah. But you've done this a million times. Okay. Snap out of it. Let's play football. So I expect to see this Dr be more clean. All right. They started their own nineteen second and six right now. And in fact, only a yard on that run play. So immediately a third and medium for the ravens coming up. Let's get David Gascon into the conversation as well. With an update on everything going on out about good morning, sir..

"The way, the special teams all pro special teams Adrian Phillips sixty percent of them were Texas you at Adrian Phillips. So the charger. Yes. A special team player you at Michael Dixon, Eichel Dixon. Seattle. This punter and you had Justin Tucker is place kicker. Good. Maybe Texas is a special team. It's a special teams player. Okay. Charges. Ravens at noon. Ravens by two and a half. I love the chargers. Take him. Don't be dumb taken. Late-game demain. I'm not I'm not saying the chargers as much as I like, Phil rivers all our friends in Vegas right now. Take charge. Okay. Second game. The eagles at the bears. The bears are favored my six and a half not way. Yes. They are the six thousand six hundred I think the big question is the health of Nick foles. If foles healthy one hundred percent, I like the eagles. If he's eighty five percent. I love the bears. Well, Nick foles is a Warlock. He's a genie and some about him in the playoffs. He just works his magic. Now. It's it is it is phenomenal. And I'm so happy for Nick foles, and what he has done. Oh, yeah. Yeah. The other Austin? I think how many tonight quarterback I think well three four I can't it up. You've got five Austin area. Guys, your friend. Mitch Mitch Moore's for Kansas City. Kansas city. You've got a Bryson Hager for the Rams. Yep. You've got Justin Tucker playing you've got Nick foles playing. You got drew a sexy? Get drew Brees. So you got a lot of players from the Austin area playing in. I think that a Nick foles gosh in the colts are just running the ball down the really wrote right now still Twenty-one nothing. It's probably gonna be twenty eight nothing pretty simple. But Nick foles he's a different character in the playoffs. He knows what he's doing. He just kinds of we brings out that black magic. And also Philadelphia. Loves him. They're all behind him. I I like to Texans excuse me. I like the eagles. Okay. I.

"That was a play action pass Bill off of a run j what the ravens do they pull their left guard on almost all of their run designs anymore, and they'll run a receiver one way or the other. Now, you've got to moving pieces that polar and that wide receiver plus Jackson, and that's all they're doing a confused defenses. What they did on that. They pulled the left guard the linebacker reacted and then they threw in the linebackers zone. It was Adrian Phillips the chiefs of be. Eaten on a similar play a few weeks earlier, and they got him on that one shut, and that's a great illustration of coaching and building off. And that's how you have to play with Jack. And that was the one re throw it's Mark Andrews or check down basically when you make it like that projection then his raw palling takeover and he's a more comfortable passer. If you're asking them to make multi progression reads, which they're not even asking him to do right now tells you everything about where he is. He just got a ways to go, but he hid lead like the very different quarterback. So now the question is can they get away with this again against the chargers. He's one replays built off with the running game. Or will the chargers have an answer for that? They do have an answer or the chargers get out. And let's say they get a ten point lead them. Hell what can the ravens play from there, and my guess would be no bacon? Cannot because they haven't even attempted to play that way yet the other part. That's interesting is the ravens defense throw so much stuff at you to. It's very highly scheme team on both sides of the ball. And there were a couple. Cases in that game where they met a few weeks ago were the defense blue some covered out of their zone. Blitzing stuff that they do and rivers just didn't happen to see it. Then that's on like rivers, but he was playing fast as guard for getting killed. He wasn't comfortable. You didn't trust them. If it settled and going into the game. I don't see missing on read like that twice. So I think Baltimore they're going to have to play better this week than they did in that last meeting when they totally outplayed the chargers, they're gonna be even better to have a chance, I think, so wait a minute. You like who do you like that one? I I like the chargers. Older some biggest with Baltimore. They've gotta have a leave Jackson. They gotta hope the chargers aren't more comfortable with their run looks. And they've got a hope their defenses as perfect or near perfect and rivers doesn't see the flaws two weeks or I don't think it's gonna s too many for me K last one. You did a breakdown dot com of this with the film stuff Philly Chicago. This one's tough because I know where we're all at your Bisky where we go to you, really. You know, I was reading like reports this morning on ESPN dot com where I think it was a coach that went against him. And they're like, oh, and he can't really throw. It's one read know kinda reminds me the Jalen hurts stuff with Alabama words one read tuck and throw and if he doesn't see the second thing just going to go for it. And you're like, oh, yeah. Except for threw for three thirty again. So they've done done amazing job of putting up major numbers with this guy. Even though I don't know really scared of it. Give him this to Trubisky beginning the Gano, man. I don't know. And now, it's like, okay. No, wait, like, it looks like this is gonna work to whatever level it needs to work. Their defense is special. You understand that all the metrics say that it special?.
Chargers vs Ravens: Are You Ready?
"We talked about this on Sunday night when the ravens are running at a running the ball at a pace unseen since the mid nineteen seventies. The chargers are built to stop a lot of good modern offense. That's so true. The chiefs they're playing the Rams and they stick with them a little bit. Yeah. Obviously these play these teams we've seen how it's gone big. I'm packages he flexible up the field pass rush Derwin James can do anything back there. Well, you fill Adrian Phillips in his a dime. Linebacker cover tied to corners can stick with guys and Craig three Deepa corner. Yep. So how do you beat the modern defense? Give them something. That is thoroughly unmodern you give them. Lamar Jackson running the ball more than anybody since the nineteen seventies. I'm in and you also have a situation where the chargers a really thin at linebacker. I believe she's Davis Brown is out for the season. Now, Denzel Perriman is already out. So you're pretty much your best run defenders are not going to be playing this game. Corey leauge. It's already out for the year. That's why I'm picking Baltimore. Even though I love this chargers team. I just think it's. A bad batch. And then you go off to the side of the ball. And watching them play last time, I talked to Philip rivers a little bit recently. And he said that, you know, very rarely this season where we ever just thoroughly outplayed. And that's what happened last time against Baltimore. And I watched the good shrunk of that game. Again, a couple of hours ago, and you just watching this Baltimore secondary the defense in general, but especially the secondary. And so much of what they do. I just watch a play. Like, why don't know what that coverage was? I don't know. What that covers was there. The way they spin the safeties and weta moving around all this all over the place and just how complex everything is.

"There are a pistol based formation offense. The big question offensively for them is how many goods throws can Lamar Jackson. Make in situations that demand him to throw the football. All right. Let's go to your big player of the week. What do you got for me this time? Well, this was actually a great throw Lamar made against the chargers in the week sixteen meeting. And it's when you play Gus Bradley defense, you know, at times, you're going to get cover three because that's his foundation. So let's start the play right here. And you can see people might remember this. It was a sixty eight yard touchdown to Mark Andrews, the tight end who was Baker mayfield's tight end in college. But this was a really well designed play and the key here. There's Mark Andrews he's going to rent what we call a deep over out. It's it's a deep route where he crosses the field. There's Jalil die. He's a safety. He's cheated to the wide side of the field. He's not truly in the middle. And this is covered three with each defender responsible for third now the player you have to influence is Adrian Phillips because he needs to get back and get under. Neath Mark Andrews the do that with the action in the backfield. They pull the guard Hearst. And it looks like a tower run play. That's what's going to happen in the backfield. That's the critical piece of this. Because in the way Gus Bradley teaches cover three and that school of cover three the Dan Quinn. Gus Bradley's that player. Adrian Phillips is what we call the hook defender. He has to get underneath Mark Andrews route, but he has to wait a beat because of what happens in the backfield. So now, you could Andrews ahead of them. You see where Phillips is you get Andrews ahead or Phillips, and this causes an issue for Phillips because now he's recovering. Then you get a die. Who has we saw earlier was cheated to the white side of the field. He's outside of Andrus. And this happens to be an excellent throw and Lamar Jackson can make a few of these throws combined with the run game. Then they've got a chance. It's critical that he makes some throws. They can't just live on the run game. Good stuff Greg Cosell. Good talking to you. Thanks. Coming up next. It was a disaster. The first time, so let's double down on it quarterback face bracket who will win in the NFC AFC playoffs this weekend and beyond who will end up in the Super Bowl and win it based on the quarterback. I like that's next in L A. It's the herd. Hi, it's the heard. Okay. This is a thirty second commercial. And I'm gonna throw a lot of numbers at you. But please.

"So I think they have options they don't necessarily have to go out and draft somebody or science. Somebody. All right. Well, let's no you down. Here was that Denzel payments last game a charger or do they re-sign on this off season? Yes, or no I'm inclined to say after being hurt pretty much every year. He's been here. It's probably ones that being his last year. Okay. All right. So Denzo Perriman gets injured. And now the question is what happens where do they go from here. I think the easy answer is they've got Hayes. Flirt when dental payment went down Hayes took over and the run defense did not suffer. In fact, Hayes looked as good as he did in the preseason. And we even questions podcast why he got cut. So he's Florida. I thought did well and Denzel permits role, and I think that'll be the easy plug and play guy. I think they'll probably bring in another linebacker for death. But go going forward. I think for me, I think with the next two weeks you have a chance to figure out some kind of defensive combination. It works best without Perriman. Now. They play the Broncos in the cardinals. Those are two teams that are trending in the wrong direction to pretty cupcake games. Maybe the Broncos being division rivals not so much. But now great teams, and it's the perfect time where they can come up with some kind of defensive concoction and be ready to roll when they go to Pittsburgh, December second, I really wanna see and you mentioned it. And I think we've mentioned it once Derwin was drafted. But I love to see him play some linebacker spot. Like, you didn't Florida state? Just let them roam around land scrimmage like he did on Sunday take with the underneath stuff. Let them run downhill in the run game, which he was fantastic at in Oakland on Sunday, let you'll die play strong safety. And then you've got probably racial Jenkins at free maybe Adrian Phillips if you want to but going forward, you you're probably going to see Hayes pillared in that middle linebacker spot. But man love to see more during their. Yeah. I think you'll see a rotation. I think in base defense, you'll see a lot of lard, I think in nickel and dime pack. Ages. You'll see some mix of Derwin details Brown and Adrian Phillips. They've had Phyllis playing some middle linebacker and some nickel sets this year. I think it just means ultimately, I think it just means more or more details Brown and more Adrian Phillips. With Polat sprinkled in there in Basti Fettes. No, I think you're right. And I was just going to say, I don't think that's such a bad thing with the way Philipson Brown if the plainly. No, I don't think it's bad thing at all. I think both those guys are covering ton aground. I mentioned earlier they're both filling their their run fits very well. They're they're reading taking better angles to the ball finishing tacos when they get there. I think a lot of cases watching tape sometimes. And this is a little bit of an exaggeration. But I think it speaks to how. Well, he's playing. I think sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between how Adrian Phillips is moving on the field and how Derwin moves on the field. Just in terms of the angles take and how quickly they're passing on the run and and making run stops in the backfield. Both those guys in particular playing very well. And I thought the last two weeks. Details Brown is taking a couple of huge Ford and his players. Well has confidence looks like it sky high and he's coming down hill and making some big tackles two. So getting those guys on the field. Ben. If it's them. I think this is a good time to mix them in even more. You wanna get them in now get them as many snaps as possible get them fully up to speed and ready to go. So that they are ready to be playing at their best. When you get to that the last stretch of the last three or four games of the season..

"Offseason much like how they did with Kaiser white in the draft the eventual replacement for Getafe Brown, and then you saw into Mosul eventual replacement for Kyle a manual. I think they do that again this year and the season whether the draft the season, they find quality Mike to help fill in for the eventual Perriman injury, if it occurs again, I think the chargers find themselves in a position with Perriman. Where Garrett said they are in the driver's seat. I think they will probably offer him to take it or leave a deal probably something of the one or two year variety for very minimal guarantee with a lot of incentives based on playing time production things of that nature to incentivize him to stay healthy and stay on the field. Paran might be inclined to go out and look for a better fit schematic 'wise. He might go out and look for a team that plays more base defense. The chargers of playing more and more nickel and dime as the season moved on. And as they've done that we've seen more of Adrian Phillips entities Brown at times on the field in nickel, and diming particular. I know the chargers like paramount. I know they think like your mentioned, he's a leader. He's he was playing pretty well this year before he got hurt. I don't think he is the star linebacker that. Some people think he is or one him to be. But he is a productive player. And he's a leader. He's kind of a physical presence in the middle of that defense. I think they would like to resign him. I could see a scenario where he may be feel slighted or maybe feels like there's a better fit somewhere else in sign. Elsewhere. And I'm not sure they address middle linebacker in the draft. They may feel like they already have is replacement on the roster. I think they've gotten some really good plan tapes Brown the last two or three weeks they're getting outstanding play out of Adrian Phillips. Kaiser white will be back next year. And you can also and certain situations you can even fit during their at middle. Linebacker will move guys around. They have three or four interchangeable pieces all of whom are playing well right now. And they're all there reads better getting better. They're all tackling. Well, they're all filling gaps. Well, they may feel like they're in a situation where they can rotate guys find fits based on down and distance and they may not necessarily need the pro the stereotypical. You know, big Hoss middle linebacker in the middle of that defense so much as they need some somebody who can range back and cover flow sideline sideline and make plays like like Craig mentioned. So I think they'd probably like to keep him. I think they'll try to keep them. I'm not entirely sure it happens. And I'm not sure they'll draft somebody a year after taking two linebackers. I could see white play middle linebacker. I could see them thinking Brown complaint align backer in this game since it's what he played in college..

"But he's back today. And obviously if you. Follow the chargers, in any way, shape or form. You know, the king has been a bit of a disaster for them the last couple of years, he's got a teed off to the thirty five yard line kicking right to left chargers. Decked out at all white all blue for the Seahawks, and we are underway. Sturges send it end over end towards the nearside penny about four yards deep to the end zone takes any. It's a touchback and here come Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. You know, we talked about the season that they're having to see all running the football with Chris Carson. I wouldn't be surprised if we see some Mike Davis out there his backup a lot because we don't know how that injury is. What Carson so I would think we'll see a lot of Davis out there. Also. Seahawks in the huddle. The ball is placed at the twenty five yard line. Seattle will be going left to right. This'll be the first play from scrimmage chargers in their last game on the first play from scrimmage scored a touchdown Wilson starts up under center. Carson is the lone setback. Most you'd left to right Wilson's got it and a hand off running right carseat at the twenty five thirty near sideline at the thirty five or skip out of bounds. It the forty yard line fourteen yard run for Chris. Carson at exactly what the Seahawks wanna do. And this gonna minister interesting to see if say if the LA chargers stay in this defense right now, they have one of their backup safeties number seventy four seventy four. They have won their safeties at linebacker. He's playing like a Mike linebacker, and that's right where Seattle wants to run the football. Carson had a great game. Last week is longest run was twelve yards today. Fourteen right out of the shoot on first and ten from the forty it'll be a hand off on a read option and Carson right up. In the middle for five more yards. Couple of nights junks for the Seahawks. They're going right at Adrian Phillips that safety. I talked about they normally run about sixty in the.
