wanting closer ties with uh... russia's military want to take a closer look now with the rebecca chung wilkins who is bloomberg's asia government and politics correspondent joining us up from hong uh... rebecca can we call this a doubling down after that aborted row vogner mutinies really the message that uh... moscow still enjoys the support of beijing in terms of messaging i think that's absolutely right i think the timing is significant that we're having this social uh... kind of so quickly after that very short -lived mutiny and of course we did already have that statement from beijing that it ported rushes efforts to preserve its uh... national stability and so on uh... i mean shin and chinese cooperation in terms of military particularly when it comes to the navy which is uh... really focus of this statement isn't particularly new they have stepped up cooperation uh... in recent years is in twenty nineteen they resume new drills along with the south africa to and navy drills we saw that happening again earlier this year so there are signs of this increased uh... and tighten relationship with russia among china's other partners how much seems like we have a interoperable are these forces well the the worry i that think they're is not particularly in top role at the moment and say that's really where china is trying to get to but but if you compare them to the sort of tightening of military allegiances and partnerships that we've seen between the u s and its allies particularly in the asia -pacific china does seem somewhat behind we have seen a real step up in the cooperation between the u s uh... the Philippines of course with that expansion of bases but then even between uh... different allies of the u s are bilaterally so that sort of easing of ties with Japan and South Korea for example also really critical the balance of power has shifted in the indo -pacific when it comes to the sort of tighter literary alliances so in some ways we see china also trying to play catch up here so if this war in Ukraine continues to drag on the main there is that the Black Sea to uh... kind of go to your point about the russian navy i know that most of the fighting is happening on the ground is there any concern that this may be in some way twisted to uh... to kind of involve or be used to uh... address the war in ukraine i mean that seems unlikely so far particularly because beijing has tried even whilst it sort of maintaining its support of russia has tried to put a little bit more distance between itself imputed and a key element here i think is the uprising which spoke very clearly to this fact that Xi Jinping may appear to have placed his faith in an unreliable partner unreliable in terms of national security too and i think you longer know the term impact of that will be that beijing starts to re -evaluate starts to think how dependent exactly and the extent to which it wants to be dependent and drawn into affairs russia's i mean so far we've seen a sort of real aversion to being too entangled and they have tried to for example be very firm about saying they're not supplying weapons and so China has also previously described this as a no limits friendship but how reaction about the to this is there has there been any reaction from the united states or is there any reason for concern from other western alliances such as NATO or the quad i think so far it's been relatively muted and that's in part because we you know as i say we've already seen them kind of tightening a little bit but of course you know china and russia's military as we've seen russia very clearly in Ukraine the shortcomings of its military here have really been broadcast to to the world so think i there will be some element in which some of of sort of the u .s and its partners feel somewhat comforted by that fact i mean the spending is the other big issue here though because china of course has upped its spending in terms of its military and particularly in terms of its navy too so that sort of development there is really item one to watch and perhaps the statement creating a little anxiety on the u .s side ahead of treasury secretary yellen's trip to beijing the timing here is kind of interesting as well isn't it yeah the timing is really interesting and so on the one hand we have this military announcement on the other of course we also do have china announcing these new restrictions on metals needed for chip making these two factors taken together and the timing of yellen's visit i mean perhaps does point to some idea that china was trying to build some kind of leverage uh over that trip too but i think we can't sort of take anything uh by us by in isolation at the moment just a few days before yellen also traveled we had that uh and umbrella law uh pushing back against foreign interference uh in china so we really do start to see some signs that beijing is trying to think about a more comprehensive way of dealing with the us and its allies and all these nations that essentially are taking and viewing china increasingly as a strategic competitor and china trying to find something it's more comprehensive in tackling uh all of those sanctions those exports and those curves too rebecca thank you so much rebecca chung wilkins of bloomberg asia government and politics correspondent here on dba this is "Guess is it something that you think is sort of passed? Or based on what has been said, you still may sort of provide some sort of, I guess, inkling into how the sausage is made. Yeah, I mean, I don't know many companies that do that that look at how the sauce is made. The league probably does have some issues, but again, we should be judged on our one loss record. We should be judged on our community impact. Our community impacted huge 75 million people in 30 years. Visitors downtown Baltimore, pretty big. And the last thing is, we should be measured by how much we drive all of our profits back into the product on the field. Will the Orioles try to be proactive in getting an extension done with an adley ruchman a gunner Henderson or one of your young stars. Baseball is different than all other sports. And the Pittsburgh pirates owner is always going to take more criticism in the Pittsburgh Steelers owner because the Steelers, the Steelers are not going to be out spent because it's against the rules in football. And in baseball, that's not our system. So it's always going to be tougher. The hardest thing to do probably other than hit a curve ball as an athlete is the work out of the smaller mid market team in an unbalanced system like baseball. Oh boy busters. This man, this man is a little delusional. First of all, he starts off with the thing the whole bite saying, I don't understand the fascination about this. Wait, I'm trying to remember Taylor. Who was the first one who brought up the idea of being transparent and opening the books of the Orioles? Was that a reporter who said that first? Could it have been John Angelo's himself? Could it have been Johnny angels themselves who started this whole conversation? Come on. And I'm guessing that that was mentioned, right? In the interview, did someone point that out to him in the interview? No, you know, he didn't mention that, which is weird. And then Jason Locke and Florida, his follow-up question also weird because he didn't mention that either. It was something like so are we going to see how the sausage is made or what? I did not hear his words played back to him or read to him. So that was an interesting interview tactic. I wouldn't really recommend that when interviewing rich and powerful people and trying to hold them to account. I don't know. I got to say, like, you could call it the McAfee, right? You bring someone on and you give them the platform and they say what they say and you kind of go along with it. I guess so I guess they don't want to. I guess they don't want to ruin a relationship with them, but he doesn't have anything interesting to say. So the most interesting thing you could have done is, you know, go at him with his own words. His own words. I could spend a lot of time talking about this. I mean, one of the first things he says is we should be measured how we put all these profits back into the field. Something that John angelos has literally never done. I mean, the Chris Davis contract sure. They bother Jimenez. But that's kind of the list. I mean, they traded Manny Machado for a dozen extra small crabs at one point because they didn't want to pay him any money. So the fact that he is saying that and he's going on and on and saying like, oh, we've brought like X million number of people to Baltimore. Hey man, do you ever think about if the team is winning? How many more people would come to Baltimore to see your team play? And oh, by the way, the other thing too that jumped out of me about that is, you know, what he was saying along those lines. It's pretty clear, they're not making any inroads on signing these young players to big multiyear contracts. So the gunner Henderson's adley rushman, grace and Rodriguez. That window of opportunity may already be gone, Taylor. And we've seen with some of these teams, like if you're gonna have a chance to keep these young superstar players, you gotta lock them up. That's what the braves have done so well. So if we're being super generous with him, like, maybe they're negotiating behind the scenes. But because John angelos has zero credibility in terms of running a baseball organization because they've been the playoffs three times in 25 years, which is just abysmal. He has no credibility in this scenario. So you'd think that maybe he would want to relieve some of that fan tension and be like, hey, you know, we're working on it, or we're having conversations, or whatever, he immediately says, well, you know, it's really tough to do it in this system and he immediately runs cover for the pirates owner, who is among his ilk, these awful owners and baseball who refuse to do anything to improve their clubs. Like, I don't know how he can say that with a straight face and think that people are going to be on his side and be like, you know what, John, you got it really tough. You got it really tough being in a small market. You know, man, we'll let you do your thing like, no, dude, the team has sucked for basically my entire life, like you need to do something to bolster fan feel. You need to get in with the fans. I just can't, I mean, he's busy fantasizing about his meet and greet with Bruce Springsteen clearly. Like, that's the only thing in those mind not extending this generational talent that is on his roster that he was watching in person, smash a home run at his first at bat, man. I love aptly rockman so much. I mean, this is crazy. I could go on, but you got things to do. Oh my goodness. Yeah. Take a breath. Sarah, do you want to take over the bleacher tweets or should we just give Taylor a breath here? You know what? Taylor's on a roll right now. I think I keep this going. Okay. All right. Sarah Lang says 88. 88, I say 88. We have a consensus. Zero zero 9 6. This is the numbers game with Sarah Lang's. There are langs reporter producer MLB dot com Sarah how are you doing today? I'm doing great because the opening day is where I can not wait and write sunshine. I hope it is like that and all 15 cities that game Toronto I want everyone to play tomorrow. But the first time on opening days, since 1968, I'm just so, so excited. Yeah, you hear all the happiness and Sarah's voice. She's having a great time opening days around the corner on the other hand, a resident Orioles fan, Kayla swank, as I was talking to Tim kerch and he was like raising his hand on the Zoom call. I have something to say. I've got a rant, sincere. We're going to have to interrupt your segment for just a second because Taylor has some stuff he wants to get off his chest. Buster, the whole Greece and Rodriguez thing, not surprise me really rankling me. Michael I is being indignant about people questioning his decisions like how dare us Orioles fans you know want a quality product and not to be really be lied to. I mean, first of all, grace and roger do you guys had a subpar spring? Like, we get it. But this is coming off an injury where he got hurt in the minor leagues. We're going all the way back to last season where he should have been up in the major leagues. Who knows if he gets hurt in the majors, but he got hurt in the minors when he should not have been there. Okay, so even if he's not playing well, and you kind of expect this, you know, he didn't, I guess he didn't play all that great in the miners, you know, when he got when he came back, whatever. You upgrade your rotation in the off season. Guess what the oils didn't do. They didn't upgrade the rotation the off season Kyle Gibson and Cole Irvin are fine, but they're not significant upgrades. So, you know, to say like, oh, you know, these other guys, they pitch better, like this is something you should plan for. If you're worried about your prospects, not playing up to expectations or, you know, thinking about that they might not at some point, then you plan for that, okay? They did not do that. So him saying that, oh, you know, he's not playing up to expectations and the best guys are gonna make the roster. That doesn't make any sense because then Jordan westburg would be on the roster over Adam Frazier. It doesn't make any sense, and then for him to go on and say, oh, I don't like the conversation and you know, he's upset that people are questioning his credibility. He has no credibility. He started the conversation by manipulating service time. He held adley rushman backed by a year. They messed around with Gunnar Henderson last season. I mean, this is insane. This is absolutely insane. Two things can be right at the same time. Grayson Rodriguez might not deserve to be in the majors right now, but he is causing he's the one who created the issue and the conversation. I don't understand it, man. Like, Adam Frazier is not better than Jordan Westbrook right now. I'm sorry he's not, so to say his performance related is insane. Okay, and yes, in the trade deadline last year, trading away two veterans adding nothing. When you're right in the middle of the wild card race, it's exhausting. They missed the playoff by three games. They didn't significantly upgrade the roster. He said it's time for liftoff for whatever. It was clearly not time for liftoff. Don't say things like that if you don't mean it. There can be a plan in place. You want to follow through with the plan, but don't talk out of both sides of your mouth. It is enraging. We are not stupid, like to treat the fans with such contempt. I mean, we're the ones feeling the business. We're the ones who want to consume the product. It's okay to have you're clearly a smarter baseball guy than the average fan than I am and that's great, but don't treat us like morons. Come on, man. Well, in the Orioles, thank you for your business. I saw it Forbes. They're one of the most profitable teams of baseball. $67 million of profit they spend none of it. 9. What are we doing? "And then you go to another franchise and it's like, oh, guess what? Um. Not great over here either. I'm in the NFL. Maybe there is no good franchise. So it might be some of that pent up stuff too. And just in general, I think it's one of the weirder stories. It's that weird to me that he became disenchanted because we've seen professional divorces in all places. The weird part is nobody going after him. That's the part I can't wrap my head around. So there you go. One two 30 seconds on pitch clocks. You're not going to hear anything. I just am thrilled. I want to say, I'm thrilled that we're switching before you did a full hour on the future with the paths. But I do just have to say to you that years of you doubting Lamar and then coming in and saying, I would trade for Lamar in 1.29 seconds, which I believe is what you put out into the world today. Shameful. Shameful Bill. What is doubting? How dare you? He was one in three in the playoffs. And I was just pointing out, I just kind of wanted to make a final four was my only question. Okay, sharers make the final four once? Baseball. But yeah, I would grab them. My quarterback's Mac Jones, I'm not going to grab Lamar Jackson. If he's a patriot, I don't know what I'll do. I mean, the only worst outcome I think genuinely is a ravens fan would be the Steelers. That would be like, you have to stop watching football. But patriots would be close, horrible. If they traded him to the Steelers, that's an actual personal attack on their fans. It would just never. That would be. They would never do it. Imagine, I can't imagine the pictures would happen. But who knows? Pitch clock. All right, baseball. The young O's, the young birds, it's all bright possibility and hope in Baltimore. What a great time to be a Baltimore sports fan. Adley rushman, MVP, can it happen this year? Oh wow, you're going Orioles, not even pitch clock. I'm so glad they got rid of the shift. I was preparing for the fantasy draft we're in. Reading these stories about all the players who had the most outs, heading into the shift, like Corey Seeger lost 92 outs into the shift. And I was like, how much do I have to research this? Is this going to matter? Is Corey Seager gonna have 50 home runs this year? Because of the worry about the shift anywhere. Unbelievable. The pitch clock is a, I think, a really fun and cool thing. I do find the MLB PR campaign around the changes to be one of the funniest things that we've ever collectively witnessed as part of the sports viewing public. Have you seen the Brian Cranston ad that they've done for? It's like watching a 70 year old guy die his hair and get a convertible and try to be hip and then tell you how hippie is. Exactly, but if instead of just telling you how hippie is he started by saying, I know you thought I was really lame. For a really long time. And that you were worried about the integrity of my hip and my calcium levels and whether I was getting enough protein and fiber, my diet. But guess what? Like to put out a whole campaign that basically says baseball is boring and we know you hate it. And I know I was divorced. But this 6 time is gonna work. I love it. I love it. Will it work? Will they attract a younger audience? You know what's gonna work? The game's going fast, it's just gonna make it so much easier to follow everything. Yeah, I was talking to my friend Hershey was a big Dodger fan, but he's on the east coast. And he would stay up for these Dodger games that were ending at like two 30 in the morning. You know? East coast time. And now those games, even the West Coast games, if you're on the east coast, they're gonna be done by 1 o'clock, hopefully. So or maybe even 1230. So just in general, it's gonna fly by. It's gonna be much more fun to zoom around on league pass or whatever you're watching different games on. Yeah. And for our purposes on the West Coast, these east coast games are gonna be done at 6 30, which is amazing. Unbelievable. That dragging through dinner, potentially the 8 15 at night. And then there's gonna be a whole new way to actually go to the game where it's like, all right, if I go get food right now, I might miss two innings. I might come back. It might be the 6th inning, so when do I go? What's the right inning? So talk about a league that needed to mix it up. I'm really happy for them. All right. We can hear. "Yeah, see, when I saw the number, I thought it was fair and I'll give you my perspective as a Vikings fan. As you guys know, the Vikings had this crazy season, and I think that the statistic was they were 11 and O and games that were decided by one touchdown or less. And my, I felt like even watching the team the whole year, like, you know what? They were a little bit lucky. And I know from talking with Orioles people during the course of the year and I'm talking about people who are in the Clubhouse, they felt a little bit like, boy, it's working out for his great, and here's the part that I saw during the off season Taylor, I start with you on this. They have this terrific season. I think adley rushman arguably is the best catcher in baseball. He's not number one. He's number two. Gunner Henderson to me is the easy pick for rookie of the year. But I'm still waiting to see that like ownership actually cares about winning games this year. They did almost nothing to improve this team that took a big step forward last year. Yeah, I mean, a lot of the success last year was a good start, you know, good front half of the year from the starting rotation, the bullpen was very consistent. The bats overperformed in the first half of the year and noticeably dropped off in the second. So, you know, there's a lot of holes on this team. You're right, they didn't do a whole lot to improve it. You know, they bolstered the starting pitching a touch. I guess. So we'll see how that goes. We'll see how the young guys come up through the miners and I don't know. You're right. I don't know that 73 is a number I feel comfortable about, but I certainly could go sideways and, you know, you've got John means, you know, his return, looming out there, maybe mid season, that could help them out a lot. They could trade some of these young guys for another pitcher for another. They're not going to do that. And they will not do that. They're not going to blow up the rebuilding plan. I don't know. It's a little frustrating. It's weird. I'm frustrated with the off season, but excited just to watch them play and see how see how some of these guys fare. Yeah, I think myself, and I'm going to go through this, and we're going to be hearing, as we go through these team capsules, the projections from Sarah, the projection from the himbo, I'm thinking the Orioles are like 75, 76. So I think it's higher than 73. Sarah, you got a sense of kind of where you're going to land on that? Yeah, I agree with that. Again, for me, it's a little bit more about where they place in the division compared to the Red Sox. And I don't see this big of wind gap between those two teams. Again, this is saying 81 and 73 as

And so I was doing that, but I ended up also then kind of competing, which heard in a few series where I really wish I had some fab to bid on a guy, but I would do that ten times out of ten. Yeah, you max. That's the retired janitor season in a nutshell. Indeed. Yeah, you maxed out or 99. I put in 51 Vijay put in 31 and Mandy put in one, so quite a few offers. On Bobby witt junior and he basically turned it around. I felt like right after you picked him up, I mean, he did start out pretty cold and then had a really, really good rookie season, probably not going to win rookie of the year. It was a really good rookie class. I think that'll go to Julio Rodriguez or adley rushman, but he's definitely going to be a perennial all star. So a good pickup for the future at a cheap price. You know, I was willing to acknowledge some receipts for me in the VJ, but and I've talked about this with Johnny a lot, too. Like, the fucking wins matter. And it took me having some really rough weeks there in late July and August, where I was, I was struggling to get the fucking two 70, two 75. Where he was able to catch up on points and ultimately pass. And it was still down to the last week and then the last like 20 point difference between him and I in that last week. So he was still very fucking close to also not making it. Even though that. So yeah, he was right. As people are saying, thank God for the Jaguars. All right, question three, the category is aeronautics. Two weeks ago, twins reliever. Two weeks ago, twins reliever, Joan Duran, through the fastest pitch of the MLB MLB season so far, a fastball clocked at 103.3 mph. Within 5, so you get some leeway within 5. Convert that number to kilometers per hour. That is not a fair question. What? Oh my God. Who could do that? That is such a ridiculously unfair. That's not an aeronautics question. That's a math question. So much ruder. Hang on, hang on, no, I'm gonna have to sit there and wait for me. Okay, we have well, we have a lot of we have a lot of listeners in Europe who does one O 3.3 mph, mean anything to them. No. It's actually a huge bummer that I don't know the answer to this because I should because we were in, I was at the Olympics in Tokyo where they also use kilometers. And so I remember this being an issue that the pitch the radar gun was in kilometers and we didn't know. I'm not even going to do the math and I'm going to guess it's like one 95 because I remember it being in the one. One 90 I say one 90. No, I'm sorry. One 66.2. She got 30, which is still amazing. I would still be so embarrassing. For our nautical Friends, that's 89.8 knots. This is such an indictment of the American education. I'm going to put it on them instead of making it. Good. What's the point times .6? Is that how you get it? That's how I always remember that. 6 miles is a kilometer. Yeah. You say that's how I always remember it like this is a thing that you do with regularity. If this had been Fahrenheit Celsius, I would have nailed it. I am great. I wouldn't have gotten that either. Double at nad 30. That one's easy. I'm not multiplying anything by .6. All right, question number four. Potent potable category. Through Tuesday's game, sorry. Who leads all American League pitchers in batter's faced this season? Oh, you know who it is? It's Jordan lyles. Yes. Whoo. It is just eating the innings up. Not really is. Do you have a good nickname? Look at it. Now. So do they do that for? Jordy. Jordy. Oh yeah. Baseball seems to be, I remember backing up the baseball beat when I worked at the star ledger and so you'd go see Joe Girardi a lot and everybody's nickname was just their name with a Y on the end of it and it seems like that's a very baseball thing. So Sam Miller, when he was at ESPN, wrote perhaps the best story on this. He went through and he did like kind of the math on baseball nicknames and then he went to he tried to figure out not even the math. I guess the linguistics on it. And he tried to figure out how they were created. He went through old clips, whatever, and then he showed up at ballparks and he asked players, like if my name is Smith, what do you call me? Smithy. Any compiled all these results, and then he did a guide to creating your own. So I would most likely be because at the, depending on, I think it's because it's a P for P they add ER at the end, typically. There's a whole process. And I highly recommend this Sam Miller story. It's so good. That's pretty great. Try to come up with a nickname for you clowns. You would probably be Ori. Oh. Or you could be steel. Oh, even better. If your first initial is C, sometimes it's sometimes your nickname is your initials. Okay. I can do that. All right, so that built up all the drama to a question 5 here. This is the money ball. This is worth two points. Your three or four four so far. Moneyball category is arts and culture. In the film Moneyball. Jonah Hill's Peter bran character is based on what current NFL team executive who did not sign off on his name being used in the movie. Paul depodesta was the Dodgers after that and I don't know where he is in the NFL, but I know he's there. Yes. That is correct. That's a fantastic. That's a 5. All I wanted to do was avoid zero. It does make me anxious. It's the pressure. I feel like I could have done the kilometer thing if you had given me more time, but everybody's looking at me on Zoom, which is a really stressful experience. While you were while you were doing the math I was actually rewatching adley rushman first career hit on YouTube. So I was looking at you. That seems right. If I had to guess what you were doing. That's probably what I would have guessed. Should we should we be springing this on people? The quiz? Yeah. No. Okay. I think of the three people that we've quiz so far, two of them have not really thoroughly enjoyed it. So I think it's something that we need to better them. I will not give it the full Jenny actually kind of fun review, but I will say it was better than I feared. Okay. That's it. That's good. That's our podcast motto. I also spent a little while being afraid that it was going to be NFL related questions. So I did feel better once I realized that I was not going to be asked to know anything about football. To be clear, before we sign off, I mean, you did a Terrell prior piece for us back in the day back in like 2015. Wow. Yes. And I would be happy to answer questions about Terrell Pryor as he was depicted in that story. Or anything that happened to him before then. Yeah. But now Saunders. I remember there was an interview. I could perhaps answer questions about stories that I specifically have written or stories that maybe fish up or store a specific stories that I have read and like, but if you are going to ask me to answer a question about football information, you're going to be disappointed. And it feels unfair to the listeners. You know, they come here for the great insight that you guys provide. And I don't want to drag the average down. Anyone's ever said about this podcast.
