"I like that movie too. It's like a memento type movie. Yeah you know where she hot of memento type is it is not issue reoccurring thing. She is not scarring herself to remember what happened to him. Mental type movie. If you share the same thing whether short term memory loss but otherwise the movies have no similarity that's the one similarity they have. But it's not a memento like movie plot device. I feel so bad for like horribly bad that you can make these two movies comparison. She's never seen memento. She doesn't know any different. I love this movie. Because it's so adam sandler. Obviously it's still has a lot of funny moments in. Its quirky and weird. But i think it's really neat. That adam sandler plays a role where he is very in love with this woman even though she has this problem and he's continuously like pursuing her regardless of what's going on obviously in the beginning it takes a little bit of time to figure this thing out but after that he pursues her producer producer and then at the. The payoff is at the end of the movie for me. Spoilers where he makes the videotape. And you can see the videotape of her watching it over and over again of what she's lived through her entire life basic web to like a child and i weep like a child to this day over that one scene. Because i think it's really. Here's your kids. Yeah she's like what that's isn't that insane. Like think about that. If it was a real thing the real thing. Though i think people do really do there are people that really do have seen mental. Yeah da thank you. Okay all right. My number eight is what i think is going to piss everybody off jerry off. We're waiting billy. Madison is my number eight. That's way way down the list man. Yeah i mean. I'm not gonna talk much about it because i'm sure you guys are gonna hide it higher. It's just for me. There's a lot of better. Adam sandler movies. I liked the movie. I love the movie. it's quotable but to me. it's just it's not one of my favorite of his. It doesn't i don't feel like it has the story. It's more of a story so outlandish comedy that's fine. We can talk about now hour later. I'm sure could be higher on me in jerry's list but this this movie happened right after airheads. Which was this kind of. It was his breakout. Yes i remember. I remember seeing it in the movie theater and just falling in love with it. I mean because nothing. Nobody's ever done anything like this scene isn't hilarious. It's legit hilarious but that's all it is. Yeah i agree with you. there's not much there. I mean chris. Farley is great but anyway and it has so quotable. It's one of his most portable movies but for me. There's too many better movies. So that's my number. Eight mine is the longest yard. Oh yeah the The old Burt reynolds bernal's chris rock. Nellie steve austin i keep going and picking remember them but no i remember loving this movie and i have almost no memory of other than the fact that that is the time that they're making all those sports movies and isn't there one. There's one part in that movie. Where does big giant linemen. I think he just passed away. Actually the guy who played in he has all isn't that that wasn't tiny from friday but he he was in quite a few of adam sandler's movies he big guy big black man and he has that line where he says little marco talk about michael jackson. That's all i remember from that movie. I you know. I am reluctant because i grew up with the young..

"And that movie yeah. It was hilarious. Because i saw the happy or i saw the adam sandler one of him doing the show and he says after he hits the ball he looks at the camera and he says all that was crushed. He's like i'm not joking. I crust and then he gets up he says oh yeah take that shooter and then he ends the video. I read something. Like adam sandler i think. He said he plays golf like every day. I'm sure does he is so rich reminds me of this youtube video. I watched and it was a clip of the conan show and it had harrison ford on it and they were talking about like did he have any props from jones that he kept and his whips or anything like that. And he's like no and harrison ford just very much like he don't give a shit about star wars. Don't give a shit and he's like no. We look at companies. I have a really rich man next crap walking around pretty good hands it was. I'm not doing it. Justice killed that line. So if i talked about it on the show or not but i know i just talked about this to people. And adam sandler was on the dan. Patrick show dan patrick was on. Espn sportscenter and stuff. But he has his own podcast and live show and he was interviewing adam sandler and he comes on and he was talking about his attire in what he was wearing and he was saying. Like you always are wearing like you know like cutoff. Shorts like yeah like baggy sweatpants shorts and a hoodie or something like that and they started talking about it because his shirt had a grease he spilt something on himself and he had like the scree spot on shirt and they were talking about that. He's like yeah. That happened right before i left. He's like i wasn't gonna change anything and they said well. Why didn't you just get like a new like new shirt or something. Throw that one in the laundry and they started talking about doing laundry in adam was like. Yeah he's like yeah we I could have put it in laundry and the an patrick's. When was the last time you ever did laundry or saw the laundry process and adam sandler says he's like oh. Yeah i've went down. And i've watched the people that do that any wasn't like being like mean or above anyone..

"See. CR. Thank you for being here with me today I appreciate you man, of course, man this is this is our favorite time of year in a Lotta ways. Yeah. I, think last year we had a conversation like this to write maybe around the release of mid Samara about what what's going on with horror movies. What are horror movies? Now the world has gotten certainly more horrifying in the last twelve months. We had a conversation like this, but before we get into you. Know Lists and the Adam Sandler movie. I kinda wanted to take your temperature on where you think this genre is at right now. Well, I don't know that we can say for sure because I'm not sure what her movies were not getting, right? I don't know what movies maybe delayed release that didn't get the festival bump that they needed from south by or or any of the summer festivals that might have happened So it's hard to say but I I would say that. I find my appetite for her pretty much the same as it was any other year. I don't necessarily find as festive outside I. Don't know the for one thing in Los Angeles. It's ninety degree. So doesn't really feel like Halloween but for another I, just you know everybody's inside. So I don't think the decorations of really started to go up yet I. Don't know that I don't really spend a lot of time in the Candy Aisle at my age you know what I mean what do you think? Well, I know you're costume guy. No you'd like to dress up just on any. Oh Wednesday. So this must be strange for you to not be able to dress up as a giant clown and run the streets. Pharaoh that's me. Yeah I I agree I think it's a little bit strange to not feel the Halloween and the Halloween season but I don't necessarily associate horror just with Halloween. It's definitely a twelve month a year John Reform me and it's this month a year. History to Halloween is when we are allowed to watch nothing but her for like a month and not seemed like we should be committed. Yes. I appreciate my wife creating a dispensation for me to be able to watch some of the most vile things imaginable on film. I several consecutive days on quite a run right now catching up on stuff seeing stuff for the first time. A lot of it is very gross or very disturbing and you're right. There's like we psychologically grant ourselves the right to do this at this period, which is pretty pretty weird. Come on honey. It's early. October. Let's watch. Torn to pieces. Yeah anyhow. What about from the from the year so far in terms of the movies that have been released have there been any that you actually liked from the Shawna Yeah I've seen a couple of things on demand that I thought were pretty cool. Some of them were like late nineteen things that finally got released this year I think that you and I. were. Really looking forward to seeing a bunch of stuff in Texas at. South by which was the OH maybe we'll go to Austin rate like right as quarantine was starting to become really apparent as the magnitude of the situation was dawning on us. So I I really don't know if you've seen anything in twenty twenty that you think is like really stellar. You know. I wanted to ask from hosts. Really Right. Y-. Right. So I think that that's I think that's where we should take this conversation which is a couple years ago. I. Did this Horror Oscars Gimmick on the site where I picked my favorite. What I thought was the best horror movie of every year since Nineteen, seventy, nine and I like the idea of continuing to hand out that award every year and so looking at kind of what would be the five contenders from each year but as you say Most of the movies of that are sort of noisy studio movies have been pushed back candyman for example, Nia Costa's remake reimagining of that classic is not coming out now until next year that's a bummer i. a lot of people were looking forward to it. I was looking forward to it. We got a few things. You know we got we got the invisible man we got relic There have been a couple of movies on shudder shudder originals, one of which I'll talk about later in the show. But like blood quantum, which I talked about on the show Z, the Beach House that I think are all worth recommending but I wouldn't say are on the order of. Hereditary or or something like that. You know that we haven't had a movie like that. That feels like it's a little bit of a moment. A little bit of a movement announces a new filmmaker in a loud and noisy way I. Don't know you know. Host is really interesting. I think the last time the show is just you and I talked about we talked about host and it kind of feels like it has has the belt for horror movies in twenty twenty if only by circumstance. Yeah I think you mentioned all those other like invisible man etc I would the lodge in there I would throw the rental and they're like. They were really there is some pretty solid doubles to left, but the host was the one where I was just like a watch it again I'm going to recommend it's all my friends I'm going to try and get people who don't ordinarily watch horror movies to check it out, and especially if we're talking about twenty twenty horror movies, it is a movie that only have been made this year. Do you think that that's a movie that's going to stand the test of time or only resonating with people because we're all looking at screens all day. No I think it will I think it's going to be a good time capsule movie for sure. But I think that there are some things that it does and you talked about this with Alex Ross Perry, which was an amazing conversation. If people haven't checked it out and I, think his some of the stuff he said towards the end of your conversation will influence what we're about to talk about today. But I think that you guys talked a little bit about the technology and the the storytelling that it employs and how it seems to be like a step for like an evolution in what could we do with? The collective psychology of what's going on with people and that's what's awesome about her movies is that I feel like unlike any other genre really taps into how people are feeling at any given time about certain things it has at least that capacity.

New Adam Sandler Halloween Movie on Netflix
"I, guess sort of mixed reactions in mixed recommendations from me but Brad let's move to you. What have you been watching? I watched another hitchcock remake Huby. Halloween. How many I saw the original but this one is a steep departure. From that. No. This is the new Adam Sandler movie that's on Netflix's Halloween themed obviously, and I went out of my way to watch it because some people including an article that we published on slash home dot com. I don't remember who who wrote it and forcing them. Sir Jacob can tell me here in a second, but they actually said that this movie was funny. And I just WANNA say? No, it's not. I I will say I did laugh a few times during this movie. There are some some funny recurring bits and just a few things that I was surprised just funny jokes that suddenly caught me off guard. But this is just another weird movie were Adam. Sandler puts on a goofy voice and this is one of the voices where you can barely understand what he's saying to because he's mumbling all the time. And it's just has such a weird story and it has these tangents that don't ask anything that don't make any sense like. Shaquille O'Neal's part in particular. Felt like it was super shoehorned. into the proceedings and then. You know you have Julie Garner's character who is yet another woman who is inexplicably infatuated with one sandler's dimwitted goofball characters and I just I don't know how or like. Adam. Sandler his point and like why he's been stuck here for so long 'cause I had also recently rewatch the wedding singer went to talked about in the quarantine stream and recently big daddy because I found out that my parents had never seen and I love both of those movies and they are genuinely hilarious not even just funny by. Adam Sandler movie standards. They're very good comedies and just movies like Cuba Halloween in Sandy Wexler which Steven Brill also directed there. So far, and away you know the kind of comedy that Adam Sandler used to be able to make used to have like characters that were fleshed out and felt real while also being funny and like not just these goofy characters and that's not to say that you can't have comedies that have outlandish characters in them. But whatever Adam Sandler is doing with these kinds

"Awards last night to but you may have missed the independent spirit awards which always the night before the Oscars and even though Adam Sandler didn't even get a nomination for an academy award and a lot of people consider that a snub for his movie on cutting gems he did win the award for Best Actor at the independent spirit awards and if you missed his acceptance speech you missed one of the better acceptance speeches I'm recent history when I read from the attended high school in was overlooked for the coveted yearbook superlatives category best looking what made me with the other than just the less prestigious designation of as an added personality on Dominis will forever be known as the people who lost an award to Adam Sandler it's pretty funny it's close with me again.

Oscars 2020 Preview
"HI everybody. It's Peter Travers. Here here with this special edition of Popcorn which we're calling the Oscar popcorn because this weekend on February ninth exactly everybody will be watching. Being the Oscar telecast on ABC and probably having their own little ballot. Like I have here trying to figure out who's going to win this damn thing and if the person I don't like winds pushed I put my money on. That's what really happens. That's what people ask me on the street. So I'm GonNa take you through these main categories and and we'll see what will win what should win and we can argue. You can find me somewhere and we can argue about it. But I'm going to start with with best supporting actress. Because that's how the Academy Awards those that's always the first award that we say Kathy Bates in Richard Jewel. Laura dern in marriage in story Scarlett Johansson in Joe Rabbit Florence Pew in Little Women and Margot Robbie in bombshell so look. There's it's a lot of good people here and I have to say right at the outset. That Scarlett Johansson is one of those rare actors that has a nomination as best actress. Chris and best supporting actress marriage story for Best Actress in here supporting which usually gets you to win one and that usually that it's usually that one but it's it's not going to happen you know I'm sitting here saying did I read wrong. What happened to Jennifer Lopez and hustlers? Hasn't she been in this game since the release Lisa Hustler she has and yet the academy you bad people have decided that J.. Lo just wasn't Oscar material while you're wrong but look we we have to deal with rats here and I'm going to say that the person who will win in this category is also the person who should win. And that is Laura Burn and Laura dern in marriage story plays a divorce lawyer and she's a tough one and let's think of all the Hollywood people that are voting for this award and how every single one of them I'll wager. A BET has their own divorce lawyer and has been through this process. Maybe more than once. Maybe two we're three times to do it. And they find Laura Dern Dunn's in this movie something spectacular it's also one of the few awards. I think that marriage story story is going to win. But Laura Dern has never won an Oscar. This will be her first time. Everyone loves her. We all love and big little lies and I think this is her time on so let her have it all right. I'm moving onto best supporting actor. Tom Hanks in a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Anthony Hopkins in the two popes Al Al Pacino in the Irishman Joe Pesci in the Irishman and Brad Pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood. Look you're talking to a big Irishman fan here so if it was me saying come up for the gold it would be Joe. Patchy I know Joe Pesci doesn't do any publicity. He basically sticks fix to himself. He's probably tough guy in real life as the gangster that he plays in the Irishman but that performance is amazing and won won his first Oscar for another score says he movie goodfellas where he was the most scary gangster. You can see here. He's kind of quiet dawn. So if I'm I'm giving them it would be Joe Patchy but the academy is giving this award and no one. No one can win. This except Brad Pitt. These other people here Tom Hanks Anthony Hopkins Al Pacino and Peci all have won Oscars so they already have the gold. Do you realize his full career. Brad Brad Pitt has never won an academy award game over people. This is it Brad. You're going to get in once upon a time in Hollywood playing a stuntman. It man playing somebody who's been around the business. I think it's irresistible for Hollywood to say I'm going to reject one of my own. Plus he was great in the movie. You seem to hear my voice that I have a little bit of a problem. Yeah I do. Because that's not a supporting performance at all that his part is the equal who of his Co Star Leonardo DiCaprio's WHO's nominated for best actor. So why is he in that category. I think they want to win. And Brad you might as well prepare repair your speech right now okay. I am now moving onto best actress. Cynthia Haribo in Harriet Scarlett Johansson in marriage story. Sir Sharon in little women. Charlie's Sharon in bombshell and Renee Zellweger in Judy. What Best S. actress award so far from the Golden Globes to the critics choice awards has it Renee Zellweger one? She's won all of them. So is there any possibility ability here for something else. I mean. Look what Charlie. Stern did in bombshell. She not only plays Megan Kelly. The makeup geniuses have made her look exactly exactly like her and Charlie's has talked exactly like are they love bio pics there so she should be really strong. Social Ronin is like twenty five years old. She's he's on her fourth Oscar nomination. This is incredible and Scarlett Johansson. Like I said nominated for best. Supporting actress and Best Actress. Cynthia revolt is playing Harry Tubman and she also wrote the song from the movie which is nominated. That happened to somebody last year. Didn't it yes it was lady. Eating Gaga Lady Gaga was nominated for writing that wonderful song from stars born and his best actress. But what did you win. She won best song and that was it so I have to say that again. I would give this award person late to search for Ronin just because I think to be that young and to be that consistently brilliant is amazing and her performance in little women. Is that good. But it's Rene as I talk about. How Hollywood would love bio-pics this is? Judy Garland that she's playing judy. This is one of their own. Did they ever give. Judy Garland her own Oscar Competitive Competitive Acting Oscar. Never and I think for that reason not only will renee Zellweger win best actress but she will win for Oscar. Judy Garland on never had. It's their way of saying Judy. We love you. We were so stupid not to give it to you. And we're going to give it to Rene in honor of you. This is how Hollywood works. It's really crazy. But if you're betting on this you have to bet crazy. Aright best actor Antonio Banderas in pain and gory. Leonardo di Caprio in once upon a time in Hollywood Adam driver in marriage story what came Phoenix and joker and Jonathan Pryce in the two popes. I look at this category and before I get into. Who Will Win and who should win? I've I've got to say academy what you have against Comedians. And what do you have against Eddie Murphy. That he's not nominated for Dole. Might as my name what you have against Adam Sandler who proved his dramatic chops in uncut gems. Like nobody can believe and yet they have it they only like to give Oscars to actors serious actors who played comic roles. Ause they hate anybody who's making a living as a comic to actually win this war so this year's been going along I've had this feeling that this was Adam drivers to lose that performance in marriage story is one of the best things he's ever done or that I've seen this year and yet there's this other guy and who's that other guy he's Joaquin Phoenix plane joker. Sometimes there's that kind of performance sometimes. There's there's one that just so dominates the screen. That is such an act of immersion of from an actor in a raw. Yeah Joaquin was scary. He was sometimes funny. He was always touching even though he's playing somebody who's totally out of his mind and a lot of this movie his in his mind. What Cain has been nominated several times before and never one Joaquin? This is yours. I can't believe any set of circumstances. Stances if you WANNA bet the whole house on something and somebody to win it's going to be Joaquin Phoenix as best actor for joker game over all right. We're ready now to move on. I'm going to best director now. This is one of the most exciting categories because these people will these particular men and save and because Hollywood as wont of decided that even though there were more women directing movies than ever before four last year. They couldn't find any to nominate which is of course absurd because Greta Gerwig directed little women which is nominated as best picture and they. I thought no I'm just GONNA do five men like we always do what happened. You people sort of learned a couple of years ago when you nominated Greta. GERWIG quick for Ladybird didn't give it to her. But you nominated her. The KADEMI is ninety two years old. Now how many women has given an academy award for directing one. And that's Kathryn Bigelow for hurt locker. Ninety two years one award hang your head in shame name anyway not knocking any of these men that did get nominated. But there's one in there that I would sacrifice for Greta Gerwig but you you try to guess who that is anyway. Here they are. Martin Scorsese the Irishman Todd Phillips. For Joker Sam Mendes for nine thousand nine hundred Seventeen Quentin Tarantino eighteen. O for once upon a time in Hollywood and Bung June hope for parasite every one of these guys you can make a case for. Martin Scorsese Z.. To me is a master the grandmaster who only has one Oscar for directing and then the Irishman is doing some of his best work. Ever Quentin Tarantino. Not No with once upon a time in Hollywood is also a peak form and yet I'm saying this category is going to between two other the directors one of them being the South Korean Vong June Hall for parasite a Foreign Language Film. That seems to have got everybody excited about what's possible and then Sam Mendes for nine hundred seventeen a world war one movie that is constructed to look like it was done in in one continuous. Take how do you resist that. You don't even though I think they would really like to give their best director award worked. Bon John. How it's going to be for Sam Mendes for creating a war movie like no war movie we've ever seen before so sam I think think it's yours but if you're getting out there and you WanNa go to Bung Jun Ho? You know you might do it because there's always a surprise in these contests we can't go. Oh by what the odds are we have to go by sometimes the academy saying I have an instinct for this. I have a feeling this is the right way to go all right last category. Are we ready best picture of the year Ford versus Ferrari the Irishman Joe. Joe Rabbit Joker her little women marriage story nineteen seventeen once upon a time in Hollywood and parasite here is is the one you know every year I do this. It's between one or two movies this year. I can't reduce anything to to the Irishman my estimation a classic one for the ages. Martin Scorsese. Ed Is Best Robert De Niro Pacino. Joe Patchy making a mob movie about old-age age about the end of a mobster. This is the punishment that they get for the lives they live. There's nobody in their lives there alone. It's a tragedy Quentin went and Tarintino. Once upon a time in Hollywood is writing about Hollywood in the sixties and about a time that he thought was the last creative burst of Hollywood Hollywood and doing that. Nineteen seventeen again the World War One movie shot to make it look like. It's one continue steak and parasite a movie about a Korean Rian family in which they exploited the people they work for and then are exploited by the people working for them it is a classic. These are four incredible classics. So what am I gonNA do. What am I going to tell you? What's out there that you have to say? This is the winner and I'm going to go with with all excuses. No excuses in fact to my love for the Irishman. But I think this is the year of Quentin Tarantino. I I think once upon a time in Hollywood being a love letter to Hollywood and being voted on by people who live and work in Hollywood Quentin Tarantino despite right brilliant work with pulp fiction inglorious bastards reservoir dogs Django unchained has never won a Best Picture Oscar or a best director Oscar. Never it's never happened. What better time than now? When he saying Hollywood I love you? I think it's time Hollywood to say to Quentin Tarantino. I love you back back. So you've got it watch the show and afterwards we'll have a discussion.
Diversity at the Oscars: The 2020 Race Isn’t Looking Any Better Than Last Time
"I feel like hell for the law and Michael to Michael for lying and get contraction I saw this French film of course later on so I was very excellent and might just make it to be honest it would not Maxis the prices for me you know at the very beginning of awards season three kicks off with three phone fast fan is Toronto in telluride at the end of the summer the beginning the full and then bounced off you start hearing people's reaction and this is the red slacks a waiting van and you're looking at pictures saying well they're all satin and a prominent films with African Americans the soon so would directed by women I didn't know if they were going to cross over the queue for that group of voters in a few years ago actually when when a post all the adults because so white we could get at round tables with the active the directors the writers and when we were putting together the actress round table there were absolutely no women of color who seems like they would even like to to get nominated and I remember and and we got pretty massively criticized rightly I take the blame for this to have an all white women's round table and and we changed direction after that but it was evident that the industry walking creating those films and I think it's easy to say if the cat in the for XP industry see both you and you have to tackle things in multiple directions I think the academy's has done a great deal to do that what we have is talking about this the other things the academy dot for instance mentorship program financing for education there are multiple patrols here that lead to this problem and she also looking at the ferry downstream and the cat in the wrong but you call take in isolation April Stephen has a great point we tend to look at the academy not that the academy shouldn't be accountable they should they're sort of the tip of the iceberg in many many ways what's your view of the academy that you focus so much attention on verses the industry I absolutely agree with Steve and that it's not just the economy it's not just the golden globes is not just a Baptist we need to go all the way back to the very beginning to the screenwriter stage and figure out again whose stories are being told and who is telling those stories when someone is sitting down with a blank page and findings front of them hoping that they have written about to write the next best picture you know what is the protagonist look like is it a tall leggy blonde from the Midwest because if so by the time we get the casting months the maybe years later then the only person you're thinking about is Scarlett Johannson or Jennifer Lawrence but then one has to ask what is their hair color have to do with how well they perform in that film right because that means then then Daya and Gina Rodriguez and other people won't even get an opportunity to audition just because of what's that in the mind set I absolutely agree that the economy is the very end of the line so we really need to start back at the beginning and find out what opportunities are being given to traditionally under represented communities not just with respect to race but also sexual orientation gender identity disability to get those films made from the very beginning and at the same time April you have written about the types of roles that black actors and actresses do get nominated for once they are cast once they are in that pipeline you wrote a piece in variety you talk about how the only black woman to be nominated for Best Actress was Cynthia Revo who plays Harriet Tubman in the film Harriet similarly Lupita nyong'o won an Oscar for her role in twelve years a slave but this year she was overlooked for the to care after she played in Jordan peels hit movie us talk about what you see is the pattern for how black actors and actresses get promoted and celebrated when they are in films it's a real problem and I think that Stephen touched on this a bit you know that that in their minds that even when they were sending up those round tables they didn't think that those you know particular performances were even going to cross over for women of color and so they were included in the panel and one must ask what kind of troops palatable to the economy to voters to film critics because the vast majority of winners especially for women of color and black women in film have all come from a place where the characters are experiencing significant trauma so inflamed women women living in abject poverty even Whoopi Goldberg who played the cookie skit side kick in ghosts and when the best supporting actress you know they were there were questions about whether she had mental health issues right the only black woman who's ever won for Best Actress is Halle berry in monster's ball and clearly she with the troubled character and so one has to say well are there only thing is that the economy fees you know that only a slave narrative that is palatable to again a majority white male voter membership and that's the movies that we see time and time again you know why is it that my pain the pain of my ancestors is entertaining for you that that is what you will award but when someone like Peter in young girl has to fully fleshed out characters in us she is snubbed for that role because we actually the very first of may off to be on the actress roundtable if you will be pizza it was a wonderful performance so it isn't shown true of actresses of color you know for the rack access to the email you'll you'll you'll call the mansion on college and terrific performance by Adam Sandler but is deceived official in the movie Sean movies don't tend to do well they lost to until movie was was one of the very few exceptions and this applies just as much to active in that applies just as much the film that win the Oscar for Best Picture DOT flight in the whole history of the office you call he had any comment is that where you thought I called think of a single is shown a picture of that as well on the other hand Schindler's list winter so this isn't shocked a criterion for the place to women of color let's talk about some more films that could have been nominated that didn't get nominated we've already mentioned Stephen you mentioned hustlers one of many movies with a cast of mostly women directed by a woman they got zero nominations this year fair fail to to cross over is you say let's get people to hang on I want to I want to give people a little bit of a listen to hustlers here we go Wall Street guys it's in this country stole from everybody working people lost everything one of these things back to jail the game is rigged and it does not reward people who play by the rules like robbing a bank except get the keys hunter Harrison vulture some people have suggested that Jennifer Lopez campaigning for the nomination too much might have played into her not getting an Oscar nomination for her role in hustlers what what are your thoughts on this film and on the reason why J. lo was overlooked I mean how search has a very special place in my heart because it is based on and your magazine story but outside of that I just enjoyed it I think it has a lot of momentum it's a lot of fine and I mean my favorite teen hustlers as winter for Lawrence's teaching Constance Wu how to strip essentially and it's just such a loving scene between two women who were just you know being friends with one another but at the same time I think the thing with jail is that I think when you're voting for and someone when an Oscar part of the sort of metric is that you have to know that how much they wanted and away and that they need it and with Jello she's already like an icon she is such a form I mean we also heard the Superbowl last week and so I think it actually might have been the opposite that maybe she did and maybe that there's been that shouldn't wanted I'm not for need it to be to sort of solidify her status in Hollywood or or in the world really but it I was really surprised by Jill rocketing nomination because she had gotten a lot of the precursors and her biggest competition is obviously Laura Dern who is the favorite to win for playing a lawyer in marriage story but for a lot of the season especially after hosters career in Toronto they were pretty head like neck and neck but I think the jail thing is that did that character of like a mama bear stripper was not really you know super palatable to a lot of people she dealt drugs and you know sort of engaged or Shoup's worked as sort of a pen been engaged in sex work but at the same time like that's not really a role that we see women especially winning Oscars for I think I wanna push back in Stevens point earlier that that you know the problem about the roles women when the colors spit specifically play in movies is that extends to everyone I don't really think that's true anything Custer's is in some ways an example of that that this was sort of a prickly story about women who are doing bad things and getting caught doing them and that's just not a movie that people see as an Oscar movie I think that's everyone's detriment what we got this voice mail from a listener sharing his opinion about the role that race and gender should or shouldn't play when it comes to Oscar nominations we got several responses along this theme listen IBM injury Oscar is I don't mind or don't care who the with gender of the person is or what color the person is I care about quality in the movie that's being produced I don't care what color they are what gender they are I don't think it matters Linda tweeted this is it just possible that there were no good movies made by people of color or women this year when will the best just be the best without conditions attached Stephen you go first and then April what's your response okay I just briefly want to respond to sing about Jennifer Lopez I we saw she did get nominated the best supporting actress before it could be a thirty two fax one is that movie is very unsentimental about her role and it had a different ending in the retention people would have like that for the cliche narrative the very strength of the film is resistant to that meeting as you said less palatable the second thing is when conformist so let you see the acting when he seems so real that you think this is just what they like the performances of look she made it so real the people football if you'd just what she's like it's one of the reasons Tom Hanks has been so rarely nominate a you got nominated this year but not for many many years he makes it look so easy well certainly we're seeing the film let's let's put J.

Who’s not watching the Oscars? A celebration of the snubbed performers
"I totally satisfied with the list of nominations the Oscar nominations who thinks this is a good list the job and not run over Lopez not Adam not surprising list though I don't think I mean it wasn't like I mean I'm sure it was shocking to that walking in out the eleven nominations to go to the joker was that bad I don't get that it is with it well just tell my tale we didn't see it though that's the thing people who have a lot of we are in our commentary yeah it's weird and dark thank you but that's what they like yeah who who likes a cat a cat in the hat yeah yeah transform and then they like weird and dark this is the thing okay low doesn't like it because she was nominated as best supporting actress right actress warning or not okay I don't remember what she she was in a bunch of categories the critics choice awards she was nominated I don't know about the SAG awards I think so she was definitely nominated for a golden globe so she was right that is that I think that's kind of being considered the biggest knob along with terror and entertain who played who's won every award he won the golden globe he won the BAFTA and then was completely overlooked for the Oscar for playing Elton John and rocket man have you seen little women do you really think it was that good that it is their housing units I'd like to see it I I I I didn't think it was like to do okay well I've most honestly I don't know most men that I know you're not going to experience it that much but as someone who grew up with that my mom texted me the other day and said that she absolutely loved it and that we would love it so I don't know I I don't know how many guys were operating little women but I think a lot more women have I don't I but I got out of the criticisms that read through four different pieces was there a lot of people are angry because so many men were nominated and non of women which is sort of what we've heard little women when I skipped completely right yeah which is I really like the little women big world which was the prologue on a any or TLC a different different okay did anybody see this movie there Antonio Banderas been nominated for never even heard of it I don't either that's again with the academy does they never win when no one had seen Roma except like art student and I don't want you know anything yeah I mean I don't why I mean I understand Jennifer Lopez feels now but everybody knows it's gonna be Renee Zellweger she's one everything she transformed into Judy Garland give me a break I mean you might enjoy a lovely even ratio up right you're not you know I'm not a stripper with a heart of gold she was a stripper who was robbing people right so it's gonna dancing came out pretty well Kathy Bates came out of it fairly well right under the circumstances the heart exchange between aren't happy thank you okay no go head scarf cap how you have it beats and Adam said Adam Sandler we're going back and forth on Twitter because she was his mother and water boy if you remember and so he was talking about how we got snubbed and she said baby I still love you they're going back and forth like they were in character and water but it was very parasite is another one I don't even begin to get what they haven't seen I mean have you seen that do you know anything about hiring go sailing understand what they were saying even though they have they have the anecdotal I don't like going to see something done as I don't work at just over yeah right at my direction from the act it's not that much I know at you haven't seen it everyone I know who's seen it absolutely loved it and people are excited that I mean the Oscars aren't supposed to just reward of movies that are in English I mean there is this number movies that are good it is yeah some people say it is I know that you're not because you do I has not appeal to me right exactly right exactly does that mean I love it and sell it okay that it's nominated I have to

Are you not afraid about the impact that this movie is going to have on on on your father. Well it's so different you know it's it's it's it's totally fiction you know the over these The ten years you know The three of US Josh From and Ronnie working on this it was totally fabricated to the point. Where you have no idea where the reality isn't where it begins? I think what's interesting is when when you watch on the screen. It feels so real when we showed our our dad the movie and he was so I mean I watched it sitting next to him and He was so engaged with the film and he was. He was speaking out loud the entire time. At one point he pulled out his phone and started the bootleg. The video. The move and I told them is that what are you doing. Put the phone away. I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm so excited. Why are you so angry at me right now? And then she told her why. And he's he's stretching he's bending reality to his own wishes to get what he wants. My impression is your family wasn't as colorful colorful. Well we've got. We have a big big big and we all love. My my family's definitely got its don't take. It's not not the same as the boys were very close very close and involve the other my debt. But my dad was the man we all looked up to him and he can he. He was a quiet quieter guy But when he was funny was great. I was talking to your cousin. He's like Oh my God when he was watching the movie that was that was him. "But you guys realize here Netflix doesn't do much of this. Nobody knows how the Netflix business model works. They just know that Netflix has gotten well out ahead of everybody in a way that doesn't seem catchable. And while you make fun of Adam Sandler Netflix is finally given you numbers on what his latest offering has done, and because they signed a four picture deal with Adam Sandler and Adam Sandler, Ken V, somebody who is like, Dane, cook that carrot top people that. People that comedians that are come after by others is not being funny, even though they make a profession out of being funny, but Adam sandlers popularity. A Netflix movie is never opened larger than his most recent one did according to net flix almost thirty one million unique accounts watching it in the first three days. That's a whole lot of people to be watching an Adam Sandler vehicle, and something that's not a movie theater. And in two thousand seventeen net flicks. Explained that viewers had already streamed over half a billion hours of Adam Sandler movies, why? Excellent question, and I'd have to guess that it's because we're dumb, but are they making money? I don't know if let's just making money or not. I know they got Sandler is Netflix, actually, making money. It's so confusing. I don't know how their business model works. I think a lot of people are confused by the amount of money that they are spending. I liked the movie. I thought it was good. It was like clue burder on the Orient Express. Whatever the, and if I told you how many people had watched that movie, would you have guessed thirty one million is -ssume that there's a million accounts of viewed it, and they all have thirty people watching on the Netflix account. So that's where they get the thirty million front playing with numbers that what you think is, there's only a million actual subscribers each subscriber as thirty different screens all their friends user net flicks. Also, they're, they're like, they're shoving this at you this Adam Sandler stuff as soon as you log on. It's like I say. With a lot of movies. So, you know, thirty one million crazy what? How many accounts you have under your one account? Because village right I have seven right? I mean, everyone does it has four security guards ago watching Netflix on her Netflix, still, I don't even remember the guy's name she gave him her. Netflix password for some reason business out there for. Yeah. He asked us for a ride because you got like locked out of his car because something had related to bleach being thrown all of his stuff. Yeah. A lot of stuff going on that. How how pervasive rip off model is this with Netflix? What you guys are saying, is it true that thirty people are on every Netflix account because they're a bunch of millennial bums out there being cheap. I don't want to answer this question, legally speaking. No, everybody has their own f-. Home is quite strong, my sister-in-law. Transition time for some ants. Netflix has this new show also called wake. It's a game show where they essentially are torturing people legally..

They just don't get the hype. Brighton. Rock and roll. Oh and roll. No. It is not dead. You just it's not getting as you say the height because lies radio stations for whatever reason decided that they're going to go with the money is. So what do we do? We have to hear auto tune cartoon is going the way of anime. So what do we do we cartoons and make it anime? Now, it makes money because you're forced feeding it through us shirts. It's all there. It's out there. We don't see anything that even resembles looney tunes. And you might say, well, Pat, what are you one hundred years old, you give me a looney tunes or any of that stuff? Compared to what we see with his anime to me. One is quality one is not right one is craft one is in the original looney tunes are made for theatrical cartoons say there were a lot. The studios were were designed for that. So they could get in there. Chuck Jones and legendary animators at the Disney cartoons. They were all made for movies, you know, to play shorts before theatrical films now with television in your proliferation of eighteen billion cable channels of nothing to watch, you know, it's real. Fast, real cheap and real profitable. Unfortunately. Yeah. And they seem to be catching on with a certain part of the generations. Oh, I can't wait to watch my yu-gi-oh gogo Pokemon. Whatever. I mean, it's it's like eighteen different flavors of coffee. It's terrible and people who are younger than me. And apparently understand the stuff eat it up. And you know, I can feel myself going into get off my lawn mowed right now. At age. Unfortunately, the stuff that we figured oh was just garbage wasn't just garbage the stuff that they have out. Now is just just garbage. And there's simply no other way around it. There's like there's not an original thought in Hollywood. Well, there either capitalizing on the stalled you or they are doing sequel after sequel after sequel, those are the ones that make the money now again, like I told you this is why you have me I can tell you about the stuff that's under the radar it. And that does make money it just doesn't get the massive marketing push. And that's to me. That's okay. Because that's kind of like discovering hidden gems and free would say remember hell or high water wind river movies of that nature where. Yeah. Okay. They didn't get the huge bump. But when you saw him you saw good Louis, you know, and then they're not designed to necessarily be crowd-pleaser. So they don't get the billion dollar marketing. Budgets. So what they're still releasing them. You just got to work a little harder to find them. All right. That's okay. Hold ourselves to a higher standard than digest concern ourselves, and with with superhero movies are so many other things there's so many other wonderful topics.

Well, it's called die motherfucker. Fuck. Yes. Damn fucker. Didn't we make you read that? I don't think I don't think we did might have any. We've made major read one where motherfucker was you had to say motherfucker like a thousand times, and it was the most soothing one you've ever done for me, the more profane things that come out of your mouth, the better. I feel well self was and shouts to Joseph the listener who called me on the misplace men of that song with an office space. I appreciate that. I'm glad we got this all solved we haven't even gotten in the first segment yet, we should probably do that. Now. I segment internet was in an Adam Sandler movie and didn't tell us. So in today. Jay, I question what the fuck is this Instagram post from July night two thousand fifteen and who are you? First of all, let me say what's up to the gang? You know on on come on the show too often. So I feel very honored to be here now. So that post Olette me say first of all, I'm former be list. Highwood actor, you know, had to relocate out here to Texas because the pop rods. Dude. So this was back in like it was like two thousand fourteen because I think that's when the movie came out thousand fourteen sweat that time I was just doing research for like before I go to school here at Texas State university. You know, same school that Ross went to him of cats. Yeah. I guess I don't know. Dick's. That's the other thing we say there. Yeah. It's in the handbook when they had to the freshman handbook, I didn't see that part. I'm just kidding, Texas. Stay calm down to joke jokes. But yes, I go to school there and on my major is in electric media, which is like audio production video production all that stuff. So back in two thousand fourteen I was just doing some research like what school I wanna go to four major potential, internship stuff like that. And while I was doing this research stumbled across his ad or casting call I should say really for an Adam Sandler movie that was going to be filmed in Georgetown, which for those who aren't familiar Georgetown is right outside of Austin, forty five minutes outside Austin, probably. Bill for this movie. They'll just very quickly I did meth with a guy from Georgetown..

And so I took two weeks off, and I was sitting in the living room on my wife looked at me and said, you going crazy. He said. In that Bob Newhart way. And so he said for the next day. I was on on the plane, and I'm like, oh my God. If he I mean. I mean, there's no point is the thing when I talk about is. When are we going to? Is there some medication? We can take technically. They're actually is. I think, but is there a way that it can just you know, y what what are we trying to do right now? I don't I don't know. I just love doing something. We've I think we're good at I I don't I don't understand why I keep wanting to Bush and push and push. And I don't know why can't sit still when I sit still like thanksgiving man when holidays come up, I am so nervous of behavior and how I'm going to do at home and being there for days when my family, and that love them all a so much. But I know that it's nap, and I know I'm going to. Fan handle the rules. They're gonna. Other was yelling at what I wear and. Okay. Let's talk about that. Yes. Okay. Every year you come to my Christmas party and this year. Okay. Let's give you dress out in a second. But I live so close to you. If I had a real arm. I could hit your your house with my house with the baseball. But I can't really throw very far. But. Dwight Evans, and it was nineteen seventy. So I totally hit your your rooster. Exactly. And so you live very close by. I wanna share one story where we live in this nice area. And it's L A where people don't they don't go up and bang on each other's doors. No one does anything like that. And one day. I'm watching watching the patriots game. And really no one around. My kids are upstairs what my wife is gone. And all of a sudden, my buzzer starts going. And I'm going crazy. I and so I opened up the front door and from beyond the gate. And this is like there are there are celebrity buses that go by that are looking for celebrities and Adam Sandler is in front of my house with his two kids. News like go. Go. And I opened the door. Hey, buddy, Hawaii. This thing you say, hey, buddy to everybody notices that. I've seen you because our kids go to the same school senior with five year olds five year old girl, San we'll walk up to an old man and go. Hey, a buddy, and then he'll walk up to a five zero. Hey, buddy. Good, buddy. Mackay just looks up like. Hey, buddy. Don't great good to see you. A fetus could use people pay a buddy. Buddy, buddy. "Your wife's parents oldest friends. The dither words. Combine to be like just came by. On be. When the girl sings about abortion, and you're and I'm horrified, and I want to protect them and get them out of there worried the whole time, and you can't do that. And then sometimes afterwards, they're just like, oh, I love the girl with the aboard. They will buddy, man. I i'm. If I hear the wrong persons in the crowd. I'll have times where I'm ready. I'm in a good mood. You know, how you find yourself in the right mood. I'm going to be good tonight. Because I'm feeling like myself and nothing making me nuts. And then all of a sudden somebody goes, so and so's here and just like, and you whole mood changes. I get like that. Because of what I'm talking about. And I don't wanna know. Who's like, no one either. Yeah. Right. I used to be so nuts that when I was first doing stand up. I would never look out before the I'd hide before show. You know, it wasn't like a famous thing. I was just like I don't wanna see who's there. I would look into the lights on say, I didn't wanna know who is not laughing or laughing at me. And now, I'm so happy. I literally or meet the crowd before the out get so anxious to meet him the lights are still up while the finding in and I'll walk on like we go. Wow. I wouldn't do that. I'm weird. It makes me feel more comfortable as I'm superstitious about seeing them beforehand. But I'm curious when you watch your own Netflix special. There's a camera that showing these mass. Audience's massive looks like there's a couple of thousands of people in there right now, you can see someone in way in the back. Go decide to go use the bathroom, and I know me, and I'm crazy enough that it'd be like really can't hold it in. I never me. I know. That's how crazy I am really where you going when someone leaves and goes, I mean, there's a bunch of places I've played where they can go and get drinks in the lobby. Yeah. I'm just like really now you need to you need a Michelob light right now. I used to bring norm spayed Schneider. Schwarzen- all these guys on the tours and they would do long each time. And they were doing twenty twenty five minutes each. And then when I got up to the crowd was so needing to go to the bathroom that would throw my rhythm off and you became their bathroom break. Make you crazy. Exactly. You know? What's funny is no one understands. They they don't think Adam Sandler with ever think about that in a different place. I don't know you are going to notice. I wish I wish we could handle it better. The nights I knights light about it. I'm funnier than that. I get tense and jumpy I had a manager when I was like nineteen and I was at the comic strip, and I was on stage. And he saw me do well. And he came back a week later. He brought people to see me, and I did an do. Well, eight like for ten straight minutes, and I came off, and I this crowd baba. And he said he didn't didn't seem like you were last week last week..
"adam sandler" Discussed on Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend
"Hey there and welcome to a very special episode of Conan O'Brien needs a friend today. I'm talking to someone I've known for a really really long time and the truth is we are friends. We've we've known each other since we both got started way way way back in the day. And so today a conversation with a good friend of mine. Adam sandler? We have been friends for a really long time. I met you when you came to set at live. I was working there. Yes. I remember, you you note and Kirk and me Odin Kirk smuggle and Greg Daniels all like shared one back part of the office, and you would come in. Very actual you. Okay. I want exactly what I wanted to talk about. You are the most confident young man I've ever been my life. Yes. And I admire that, thank you. It was just just sheared driving a little mostly stupidity. That may be that way. But I was I was there certainly went for land. I was competing with Farley, by the way. Yes. I remember thinking, I envied you so much because. I'm a little old couple years older than you. But I was still young. But it took me years and years and years and years to grow my confidence just years and years and years, and you came out of the gate confident, and you had the goods, but I remember thinking, how do how do you get that? How do you come from? You know being this kid from this town in New Hampshire right right over the board or to. Yup. I got this. I got this. This is what I should be doing. How do you? How did you? What are they hunt? From is that your dad is your mom who where all my data? Mom, always were very telling me. I was good at stuff. They were. They always love me. And had my back. I they they talked about how good I could be at thanks. You know, my father was definitely gave me, you know, realism of my what I'm not good at two. But, but they definitely told me, you know, you can do this. You could pay a tire you could pay you could saying you can. You know, you can't dance I tried to ban. So little bit to be the triple threat that my grandmother said I should be and they said to eliminate the damn thing and concentrate on. Yeah. Lost the dance. I I was nuts. I was certainly I think it was just I told so many friends in New Hampshire when I left to be a comedian that I was going to be huge, huge huge. And I would put myself in a corner. Like, it's getting bigger people starting to notice and no one was noticing really. But like saying all the stuff to my hometown kit buddies that how everyone's talking about me, and they weren't talking about me. But I just put some weird thing in my head. I gotta get this done. She I heard a story a friend of mine witness this stand up comedian, Ron Richards agai knew from years and years and years ago when I was first starting out and Ron Richards told me that he was in a club. When Eddie Murphy was just starting out, and nobody showed up that night. There was no one in the audience and all the other comics pissed and angry and. Is you know, saying Davis fuck this? And they all left, Ron Richards. Stuck around Eddie Murphy one out. I don't know if he was like seventeen eighteen and did his whole set for now there for nobody. And when I heard that story of that story. And I thought I think Adam would do that. I think you would just be one of those people like there's one person the owns I'm going out there and doing it because I'm going places. I got stuff to do. This is what they're that. Come to see did takes a level of confidence that and in your ability to be able to say to your friends in New Hampshire. I didn't say anything to anybody. Really? No. I never said a keep your eye on me this kid's going places. I always kept my cards close to my chess. I like that better. That's the better place to be. I I did fear and cover hedging my bet..
