"And welcome back to back guys at the movies with Kevin Carl. Let's continue on with the movie reviews and hit another horror movie item. You know, I love horror movies. I apologized to people who can't stand them. Talk about and I talk about him all the time, even though you know, but the relevant this is relevant to the season. It comes out this week. It's on Shuter. It's absolutely worth it. If you're a horror movie fan, so I say, get shattered. One of the things they did. It's an original programming is they brought back the creepshow. Concepts. Now, a little bit of history about Creepshow creature was a movie that was made in 1982. Stephen King wrote the script and George Romero directed it, And it was designed to follow the old easy horror comics. You know the tales from the crypt vault of horror. And the haunt of fear, which were these three horror comics in the pre code eras. My dad would read them actually have some original from the forties prince of those horror books. And they ended up getting banned. There were a whole bunch of other comics that printed horror comics like Atlas had a whole bunch of brands of the atlas ended up becoming like Marvel. And they end up going into superhero stuff because you can't do horror comics with the with the comic code when that came in in the fifties, But my father raised me on these hard times. I remember reading them as a kid, and then they had some reprints and I read the whole bunch of the reprints and their glory and violent and horrible, But I loved them and they did it. Tales from the Crypt movie back In the seventies and the vault of horror movie, which were these amicus films that were these Portman do Anthology movies. But George Romero and Stephen King joined forces in the early eighties to do an homage to those Comic books and movie form, and it's great. It's one of my favorite anthology horror movies out there. They did a couple Sequels. They did creep Show two in the late eighties, and that was crap. It was like one episode that was okay on then they did creep show three in the 2000, and that thing was really bad. I remember reviewing that on DVD. The original tales from the Crypt TV series on HBO was also a homage to that. It. Also, tales from the Dark side was an old anthology TV series in the eighties that was on syndicated television that was very low budget, But it was sort of what creep show kind of evolved into and then shutter decided to do. Their own version of Creep show is a TV series. And I watched it. I I liked it. I thought it was a lot of fun. They had short two or three different stories per episode. So they were short stories, and they did their their horror comic type things, You know. Gotcha endings, jump scares, ghouls, goblins. You know some of the more traditional ideas and you know it was low budget because they couldn't put a lot of money into some of the effects. So they go into the panels of Ah Comic book to sort of tell those stories, and I thought that was clever way of handling that diversion from the actual script. And so that was such a success. They're working on Season two, but they did a state Creepshow holiday special. And this first Adam Polly has a guy who words he might be a werewolf and then finds himself in a support group for monstrous shape shifters. My name is Robert Western,.

G. action adventure and comedy with a run time of ninety nine minutes which well I was gonna be like I felt like three hours the run tomato score in the sixty four percent for the critics which isn't totally surprising ninety three percent from the audience is very surprising adding it all of forty seven on Metacritic which means it meadows I wasn't intended boy that must be it that must be what it is Metacritic says Spencer for hire two points better than this this movie was written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller and directed by Jeff Fowler I don't know any of those guys and I don't care one is going to play center field for the Rockies dexter Fowler said he does not he said yes exactly I said okay after discovering a small blue fast hedgehog a small town police officer must help it defeat an evil genius who wants to do experiments on it okay so that's not as was written by a child it was written by a mineral is written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller this movie stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of sonic James Marsden Cyclops is officer Tom Jim Carrey is doctor Robotnik these are the people that I like you like James Martin he's fine tika Sumpter as Maddie the wife of officer Tom well I think it's very attractive okay Adam Polly as officer Wade leave but Juve Madou Modupe as Asian stone mill McDonough as major Bennington who's in the movie for maybe three minutes I don't even know if it's the most wonderful right yeah our basic need you ASIC bro the exact character you'd expect them to play good this movie is not terrible this is really hear me out well here we have to do anything what this movie is terrible okay I don't think it is but I also don't think they do a single thing well now so I don't I don't do anything well I think this is literally a movie that could have been written for any old cartoon character yeah and then you plug that character out of that video game cartoon could be a cereal mascot for all I care yeah and you just put him in this movie the train rather a okay I guess we're going on a buddy road trip because you traveled through a different dimension and now a scientist wants to find you and dissect you and then by the end you suddenly have a lactic powers the first one is donning deal the first hour of this movie is useless it doesn't do anything doesn't progress story at all I like baseball scene did last I think I did I don't know what it was okay the last thirty to forty minutes sort of worth watching kind of fun but not great let me ask you a question and please be honest what is sonics deal I don't know what I knew I thought I knew he can run fast yeah get all you can turn into a ball I used to love playing sonic pinball guess what Bragg I had both a super Nintendo and Sega Genesis I I think there's a silver spoon in my mouth real quick bottler I wish they had teased the greater sonic world in this movie I did it all but do a bit with what I had with doctor about it let me point out one thing that I did like so sonic is on earth he's in green hill mountains that's the first level of the sonic game but the place that he does not want to go because it looks boring and stupid when is the mushroom kingdom and I heard the Mario mushroom guy get a much Mario but do you get that sure sure I'm not jab at Mario although Super Mario three is way better than any sonic okay well I would take any of those three Mario games on the anti S. and I mean I like sonic two but what I believe our guy for those games I love playing those games and gamble I'll tell you right now I'm a big big fan of Mario too and I understand that it's just Doki Doki with the Mario covers on it but I will that's the game that I play the most out of those three still Super Mario world three is my favorite Super Mario three is the best of the bunch yeah but I played that so much as a kid that now I play Mario to more than that I don't I mean I don't blame you for that this is a great results on it review so this movie guru is clearly aimed for like that seven to ten range for kids now because it's completely inoffensive there is some fun to be had there for kids or something jokes is where the jobs are very nice for her James Marsden is like a perfect guy for that you know he's just like a a cookie layered nice looking black guy yeah and so he plays that role perfectly.

"This is a big time spoiler review. Sonic it is not terrible. I also will say who's in the Movie Age Ben Schwartz Voices. Sonic Jim Carey. Is Dr Robotic James Martin as Tom the best friend? So there you go Not Terrible. It isn't a terrible movie. It's not all that good. It's it's very safe. It's a kids movie. It's it is it. Is this movie fisher. They they they. They play up on some day. They play up on some things especially some old classic. Jim Carey this is this is the most Jim Carey ingredient kids. Yeah this is the most Jim Carey Jim Carey role seen in quite some tests much. It's much different. What's that shady movie? We saw him in numbers early days. Now don't wait. Which one was that one? Like last two years ago it was terrible though. It was very weird very dad. Oh that's GonNa that's GonNa Piss me off the name of it nine for Dr Crimes. Dark crimes very bad about that Dr Crimes of Grindelwald. It's a fun character I wasn't disengaged. At any point I was into it the entire time. It just doesn't do much of anything in terms of being different unique or standing out with just thought it's very very comparable to the doctor peak achieve detective peak at you. Dr Marion Bureau. I thought he could chew was it was a little more fun and popped a bit more places when sonic but not by much. They're they're very compatible. And I hate saying that because there was a video game always think that's just in case there is also an and I somebody tweeted. They're like you can't complain about the character being redesigned than complain about the product placement. Yes and no I mean it's kind of their fault in the first place. They made. That should character so it's not like I'm going to pull the punches on that. There are some insane product placement. This movie like really just stupid. Olive Garden Baby Olive Garden. I I never thought I'd hear when you're here. You're family in a major motion picture date. They did every fast. And also zillow Zillow's one was the worst one that was the most egregious product placement. I was just looking for a new apartment on zillow DOT COM Murray Natural Conversation zillow DOT com. Yeah Zillow DOT EDU. I you know you go back to detective peak. It's you so I I like sonic. I'll give you my scored a second but at least what detective peak at you had going. Were the quote Unquote Cameos appearances from the other? Poke Amman 'cause that that added like you know somewhere used in funny situations in summer. Just fun to see them in their CGI representations very well done. I think that's one thing that sonic lacked is outside of Sonic and robotic In the Post Gir- end You didn't get much. Oh and also like the knuckles like I don't know how to say the name of the animals at Fox at Gino's that were the the raiders and the Sonic had Al Mentor at the beginning. Gamma Yeah I mean you know. Not many people know about like the sonics like they're going to drop like the Sonics. Love Interest Rosen. They're the only people who draw bad. Fan Art you're going to get that so I think what they had to go off of his Just basically been Schwartz being sonic and his musings and quick things on The human world and on that level. I thought it worked. I Down Jim Carey to be on. You know he was nineteen ninety-four Jim Carey. Facial contortions voices and all that I don't know how they got to that from robotic 'cause robotics big fat guy and You know It worked it worked for what it was. I always say movies have no right being better than I thought they were going to be. I think this one. I don't know if it exceeded my expectations. But it certainly wasn't bad and I gave it a seventy one hundred I think I was Super Super Hesitant for obviously all the issues. You you mentioned earlier jeff going into this and I'm also just not a huge sonic person at all So That you attack. All these things is designed for me to dislike. It ended up liking fairmount Ben Schwartz thought was really good in the voice role I don't think James Marsden. Tika sumpter really did much in this. I don't think they added a ton to the movie Jim Carey. I'm split on him a little bit. Only because at some points it was definitely too much. I definitely weighed to swing into the Jim. Carrey like `ISMs whatever you WANNA call that and but other points at worked really really well super funny so Dan the day. I think this is a movie. That's meant for kids and In my kid brain really reluctant a ton at old brain. Maybe not so mused at times but you know it hits it hits on like a forty percent clip like the humor interaction and that to me is enough. And it's like it's like you said you have never disembowelling disengaged any point it's like start to go action basically straight through and actually look good. I mean they did a lot of the effects. Were clean up stuff in. It looked good. I know sorry say quick Jim Carey stuff. It was a volume shooting effort. Project here Yes for sure. It was a lot. It was a lot but oddly enough I think a big reason why it worked that the stuff that didn't work it didn't work but it didn't bother me like I wasn't like anything like Jim. Carrey popped on the screen and did a bit for like ten seconds. I think that was a big part of why this thing is I. I give them a lot of credit. For allowing Kerry to be carried like the Jim Carey that people know but also making sure was reined in and and the whole thing was written play on a way. Where even if thing didn't work it didn't derail the movie for me? I think that the problem with the movies that maybe didn't take a ton of chances but then I can also say at the same time like while that's a negative that did save it from potentially being just horrendous because if if the Jim Carrey robotic really didn't work this thing would have been a disaster. Oh yeah and I think that's kind of kind of the good part about having Jim Carey in his type of role as he can. He has that comedic capital on him to wear like if he does something. That's not particular particularly funny. I don't find it Groan inducing. I'm just like okay. This is just just doing a Jim Carey thing so I thought he was fine there. I give it a sixty by the way I thought I thought it was fine. the the parts that. I thought were just kind of Ma- I can't even think of anymore because I I feel like a lot of this. Movie is enjoyable in the moment but utterly forgettable once you leave remember this moved by August. No you'll remember a desert like a particular scene that like the only thing that really stands out for me. As a scene is the opening. Were Sonics in the Green Hills Zone. And he's running through everything because I was very sonic ask but and then the scene were they open up the portal to San Francisco as the other one member about seven. I feel like I've forgotten. Very large percentage of this movie. The one seen. We both mentioned the drawing they mentioned in old meaning the old sonic boom of the drawing of him which made me laugh out loud in the theater. Yeah but I forgot about. That already. Wouldn't broaden it up and texture as twenty minutes. Well here's my big question this relates to what you're saying true. This is kind of think the big question which is movie does do putting these video characters in human real like earth interaction. Does it hurt the property? I think worked really well for detective. Peak itchy where Vince when I I would have rather have seen the an against spoiler. I'd rather have seen the mushroom planet that robotic was on the movie I would rather have seen kind of crazy shit and again that goes back to me saying you take the risk. Maybe it's GonNa be worse but I'd rather the risk taken there because sonic interacting with humans. Maybe isn't the greatest thing but it worked really offer detective. Pk juice fine. Understand how the concept can work but do you think that that's a big reason why it might be forgettable. Cgi CHARACTER PLOP down with humans. I think in this particular property maybe hurts a little only because sonic isn't a character that's built around human interaction right like Pokemon was built in a human world so i. That's maybe a little more easy for us to like compensate considering already part of it I think this might have performed better if it was a fully animated movie. Maybe like like this is still tracking to make a huge. Let's make a ton of money. So that's it's different on a failure by any means but maybe woulda been a better overall movie in animated setting. I don't know I mean that's A. That's a tough one because I disagree. I think that I think that rooting these cartoonish characters in the human world at least at least gives them something relatable to play off of and I think at least brings humor to the table. Just by virtue of No the outsider experiencing something that is no inane about everyday life but would be absurd to somebody else right so like yoga for example like calling calling Marsden's character was named Tim Ted. I forget his character's name calling his. Yeah yeah all of them. All the T- T names except for Tom and then calling his wife or girlfriend Pretzel Lady or whatever because she does yoga. That's not really funny but at the same time it it still is like okay like sonic science just like kid at heart is good nature and he just commenting on our world and I think that'd be funnier than him. Just blasting around a completely three ds landscape now as an angry birds. One of your favorite animated movies. Now I don't think it is. I think I don't think you said you loved the first angry birds. I enjoyed it but I think it was something like the second one. Both of them have higher on tomato ratings in this movie. Yeah that's fine but I think there's a difference between a an established character late. Sonic who Has a large fan base a pretty large fan base and people recognize sonic than there is something about the angry birds movie which is just a you know a very clear money grab Not that sonic is it but I know sonic very much. Well Yeah but it but I I think that sonic at least like you know if it was a money. Grab money grabs. Sonic the Hedgehog came out. Nine hundred ninety they would have You know they`ve. They've made a lot of video games but I feel like if they wanted to cash in they would have made a movie sooner but I mean you might be right. I just don't know how you do it. I think like what you do and the next one is you pull the human characters into the sonic worlds in there will be a next one. They teased it up Concerning note tales they show tales anything. He's the Fox. Two tailed by the fucking. I now get back. You can check the balls to have a post credits scene amid Credit Anna post credit. I mean that's that's a ballsy move tales of great though by the way it tells the animation voice tastic. Yeah good job who continued to say. I wanted to note that the other officer in this movie the one that's like Whatever James Marston subordinate in and every time he was on screening baby laugh. I don't know who that actor is. But he made me laugh every time I saw him the other part. I had like an a running Licko Adam polly as Wade whipple. Yes very funny to me. the other things. I noted on here the sonic doing this shoot dance. That's how you can tell US movies. Pretty heavily delayed See the the. What do you call the Bar The I guess the the bikers whatever being pissed at James Marston because say we don't like your Kant here hipsters like that part that was a grown moment for me. I thought they were going to say cop. Yeah that would that would have you made sense but like throwing a hipster insole in twenty twenty dollars now grown at me and he did. It's funny James. Marsden was in this because he track to X. Men and you track the sonic seen to the quicksilver seen from. X. Men where you know you're just being fast and essentially stopping time to rearrange set pieces and fight and then click and resume time Which I'm going to be honest with you. That should never gets old. I always enjoy that. I always think that looks. I don't mind it always cool. I was just watching the alternative earlier. Always cool Pity of and that. The product placement is definitely agree. Just the garden part which is still funny. I think the reveal is funny but obviously very clear product placement. That was bad but I think the zillow will was still by far the worst..

That's all I mean is that they've evolved well and I think that I lie. You evolve. Is there a place for you? I think that both Stasi and la La would be great candidates to graduate to housewives. But they're too young and there needs to be some where in between where they can be great people. Stasi's a great person. I think she's a great character on reality television. Okay and I think the same Lalla too because when you find people that are as good at the reality television arts sciences as I do not give them up agree right when we have players so deft. What's up with Bo? I don't have a good feel for him. Having not seen it before is of course a former actor. Yeah and I find him very normal and Nice. Yeah very inoffensive. "That's that's key over it. How dare you sir? How you no decency Keith? Olbermann men going everything since. That's everything's incidents been gravy like that's like this show is going to be fine and it was and no one and subsequently has been like like Barco Martindale hasn't said why are you so fascinated with me or Zach braff hasn't said why did you want to kill me. I know maybe they have. You've been some stars who come in and I can't believe I'm doing this. I can't believe I say yes to this. I remember Wallace Shawn was in the first season. And so I think the guest stars in the first season. I really have to hand too because we were real unknown quantity in season two like we got like Daniel Radcliffe had seen the show and was a fan. They kind of knew what they were. We're getting into those. I guess. Why are they doing this? And Walsh Line. He was on vacation in Spain and like he took a train to get to the recording studio. Like you really went out of his way for us and I can't believe he did and he's so funny and so great in the episode but literally like the first thing he said and we picked up the phone after introduced myself he said well I guess if Naomi Watts can put up with this foolishness. I can to the fact that was also in the script I think is what made him realize that right. I guess I can do this. Bizarre thing and one of the sort of frustrations frustrations or sad fascination is will Arnett not having gotten an emmy nomination. Soap are voicing the main title character. Obviously with this being sort of the last chance do you have a plea plea on his behalf. Do you WanNa make for all the academy members who clearly listened to this podcast. Sure I mean he's the best I I mean I I always get uncomfortable. We talk about got awards. Because I don't really care I mean we just one Annie Award last week for Beau Jack and another any word for for to Birdie which was great but like. I'd never heard of the Annie Awards before we started making cartoons. And I couldn't tell you who who has won the Emmy Awards for best voice over performance in an animated show for the last five years that we've been on the air so so it is. Yeah it is nicer to win the not win and I think if the EMMYS emmy voters would like to think of themselves as a true document of the best shows of the year in the best performances of the year I would advise you give will Arnett. Listen because I think he is doing incredible work on the show. I mean we couldn't make the show if not for will Arnett I mean he. He brings so much comedy to the rural but also so much pathos and tragedy and the fact that he's able to do so much is pretty unbelievable and gives us such confidence to to right the show that we write and if we were writing for a lesser talent. We wouldn't take some the risk that we do so I think having him has made the show so much better and I'm happy with that and yeah I'm sure he wouldn't mind having an emmy nomination even but that's up to the people who give me one thing we always like to end this segment with is to hear what you're watching. And what are you loving. My Love Cheer. I loved John. Mullany in the sack. Lunch bunch you know what I really love that no one ever talks about is a UH Penn and teller fool us. It's like one of my favorite shows on television. And it's like maybe not hip. I mean it's also it's like the opposite of what I do because it's like I watch didn't standalone segments. I rarely watch full episodes. They just like pull up a clip and like watch a segment Penn and teller. Fool US between things you know and it's great. I mean I love under a rock with Pignataro on youtube like most of what I watch now is kind of. Maybe call like between things. Television like I know succession is fabulous but like I don't have an hour to watch a thing but like twenty minutes like yeah I can watch another episode of. I think you should leave and again it kills me because that's not the TV. I right like I make shows that are involved and serialized and I want your full attention. I want you to sit down and Mike watched the show and think about what you're watching. But if if I look at my own habits I go you know I might be the target audience for Qube much just going to make that joke. I I know you guys like about I. It and it scares me because I also don't know if I would ever make a show for qube because we don't have one yet sure we're here at home. I my lawyer double check but I kind of understand the appeal. Yes yes we're busy people and sometimes we just want to like knock something out quickly. I hope more networks also continue to make deep involved serialized stories stories. Those stories that I wanNA keep telling. Well we thank you so much for joining us on the podcast this week. Oh thank you what. What a joy last episodes of Jack Horsemen are now streaming on Netflix number? Five as usual. We wrap things up with the critics corner this week Dan. It's a ton of midseason debuts news plus a little thing called the super bowl so lots of things to get into of course the final season of Bojan horsemen which we just had Rafael on MC millions on. Hbo Manhunt Deadly Games which moves to spectrum originals diseases and Mero returns for a second season on showtime the mask singer gets TV's biggest timeslot and returns for its third third season after the super bowl. Fox debuts unscripted competition series Lego masters hosted by Will Arnett. CBS Access has the very interesting drama. Armacost interrogation where you can watch episodes in any order whatsoever. The new season of Brooklyn nine one of my favorites comes out riverdale. Offshoot Katy keene makes its debut on the CW. He W USA returns the new season of Anthology. The center and the new season of Sam Ismael produced Briar Patch debuts and then over at CBS plays as first female lapd captain and lesbian on CBS's Tommy and then NBC has a new comedy with with Fran Drescher and Adam polly do. There's a lot we ought stock with the. TV's Leslie this stuff. Did you watch and watch really a lot of it. Our our colleague. Inga King will have reviewed interrogation and Katy keene so as of this moment I have no opinion on those. I feel like we've talked enough about the super bowl which of course I will be the biggest. TV show people are talking about this week. So anyway there are definitely shows the you just listed that are well worth watching you obviously just listen to our segment. Mid with Raphael Bob Blacksburg and the last eight episodes of Beau Jack Horsemen are are often lovely. Often sad often funny. They're basically basically a representative end of the series. I was struck a few times by episodes that were steering into the seriousness. And the sadness and then I had to stop and say to myself. Wait did you seriously think that this was a show. That was just going to go out entirely in a torrent of puns and Haha Hollywood satire tire. No that's not what the show was. So it is an appropriate and Tony early correct end for the series is all I will say. What else is coming out next week? I reviewed McMillan's on. HBO That was time to its Sundance Premiere. And it is a fantastic story about the rigging of the McDonald's monopoly game in the ninety s and this explains why I would never want. This explains why none of us ever one is the basic answer we would all get our free fries and our free drinks and we'd be like okay that's enough and then we'd all be looking at our our board's going God. I'm missing that one piece. I need for every single one of them. What's up with that with the answer? Apparently is a lot out of the pieces. Were being sold and transported through literally the mob and it is a fascinating story. It is not a great documentary. It it has. It suffers from from a little bit too much reenactment. itis which if you watch as many non-fiction programmes as I do. It has become the bane of my existence in the past few years. People people using reenactments and not doing anything creative with them and that is unfortunately a serious problem with millions. But it's such a good story and the characters who are on camera are so uh-huh fascinating that it's still totally watchable. I just couldn't help thinking almost every turn that if someone had had a good idea like let's do the reenactments animated. Let's do the reenactments literally like a heist movie. Let's do anything creative with the reenactments at all. It could have been a great show and so minor disappointment there there. Let's see we've made fun of spectrum. Originals a number of times on this podcast mostly the confusion of what it is who has access to it and why it is the latter specifically and what I will say is manhunt mind. Games is the first spectrum originals program that I'm actually chilly. Going to give a recommendation to I'm going to give a positive response to it is and this is the the. It's an anthology in the first aired on what discovery yes discovery pulled that a scripted did. The first season was the unabomber season with Paul Bet Ni on discovery and it was also a really solid basically elaborate game of cat and mouse that was was about procedure and was about the complications of the intelligence apparatus when it comes to tracking down one of these most wanted criminals. This one is the latest telling of the somewhat Richard Jewel Story Somewhat Eric Robert Rudolph Story Basically relating to serial bombings and most post high profile lead the Olympic bombing in Atlanta nineteen ninety-six and it is similar to the first season in that. It's just a solid smartly. It Lee told story with some really good performances cameron Britain from mind hunters. That's what that one is called. The David fincher show come come on Linda Mind. Hunter combine these two and this is not helping having camera Britain and both he plays Richard Jewel. And it's a remarkable performance. He is it is so good and you forget the fact that he's this gigantic hulk of a man and you really fully believe him as this sad wannabe hero. Who got railroaded by a lot of forces outside of his control? It's a great performance are Howard who everyone should love from the one season of Rubicon that existed he gives a great performance it solid. It's not great. I'm not going to tell you that you need to move to a city that has spectrum if you don't live in a city with spectrum I'm not gonNa tell you to change your cable provider if you have somebody else's your cable provider but if you have spectrum if you liked the first season of manhunt it's it's really solid and so there's that what else is coming out. I feel like there were like seven hundred fifty things you listed. What else midseason on broadcast really kicks off so Tommy with the Falco on CBS indebted? And then a couple of new shows on USA network CBS. All accesses interrogation it was interesting at Tci they were questioned questioned a lot about the structure of the show. And I think that someone else's reviewing that in Gu's reviewing that one and so my favorites Brooklyn nine nine returns for its new season and you should should definitely look forward to next week's interview with Dan Gore. That show show runner. It is a great conversation about a show that we both enjoy very much. So yeah and we've seen a a couple of episodes of it and guess what it's nine so of the new broadcast shows. There's honestly nothing that you need to watch the first episode of Tommy me on. CBS is good. The show was created by Paul at Nacional who is extremely talented. Pol At nausea basically created the show and then wasn't involved after that and the second episode falls off in quality extremely dramatically. I don't remember the last time with the broadcast show that I went from being being as excited to being hugely disappointed as I was with that one. So let's not considering. Its and who is who is quite solid. It's a really good cast pretty pretty much top to bottom and I still watch one more episode. Because maybe the third episode will tip the pendulum one way or the other. Maybe there was just a kind of drop in quality between the first and second episodes. And it'll bounce back. But I was disappointed by that. Indebted is a mess and despite having Steven Weber and Fran Drescher and Adam pally and and Abby Elliott who are all extremely talented in various different ways it has barely any premise..

Will Arnett Emmy Awards CBS Tommy Beau Jack Katy keene Penn Paul Bet Ni Fran Drescher Wallace Shawn Dan Gore Daniel Radcliffe Brooklyn Zach braff Qube Olbermann Barco Martindale Naomi Watts Keith

"And joining us. Star Wars insider writer full of podcast Bryan Young. How do you do and if you're wondering no you did not travel into the future? We are recording this little early and putting it up on the podcast feed so you have something to enjoy over the weekend because we took some days off this week But this will function as Monday's episode but Let's talk about this guy is So episode eight of the Middle or in this is the first episode of this. Is The star wars story debut of Take Ott which boy is it? Incredible like I feel like this might be my favorite episode of the season. I know he said that like probably three times over. The course of the season changed my mind but It Star Wars. You got to allow me to change my mind and You know this was just like so throwing so funny Brad you just got done watching this. What did you think yeah? This was a fantastic episode and in many ways this episode felt like what I assumed that most of the series would be like. Well we kind of talked about this and the last podcast where the previous episode in how we finally got some characters together that we'd wanted to see All in one group finally after you know entire season and this time it it even more so Took that route and yeah having all this whole team together. was really great There's some little I don't know kind of nitpicky things that I have that I feel like the this show doesn't quite earn and that kind of bugged me br when we get to them. Yeah no I will And otherwise this was a very satisfying finales and definitely Finley paves the way for a very interesting second season Brian. What did you think you know? I was I was really on board with the episode And then when we got to the ending just didn't even realize I was crying Ending Kinda hit that that so hard that I didn't didn't realize that it was going to affect me the way. Did I really enjoyed it. I think Ytd Got Away with stuff that only why td could uh-huh yeah fair and Well I mean I think if you had any other of the episode of directors that are working on the show tried to pull off the script. I just don't think it would've would've worked And or maybe it wasn't the script. Maybe it was just I mean I'm I'm thinking specifically the the Jason Davis and Adam pally alley scene and Phil show stack over at Lucasfilm. Head said that like most of that scene was Improv though and that they'd had all kinds of you've outtakes that were even funnier but they couldn't use because it was star wars and So maybe it wasn't just the script that anybody else could have messed up. Maybe it was like like Taika. YTD and that special relationship with other comedians just made a special way maybe it was in the DNA because he was involved Ah I said on twitter that you know when you get to the climactic end of a movie in. It's totally disappointing unexciting. This was the complete opposite of of that for me. I always like so worried that they were not going to be able to. You know just land this and it lands it so well Let's talk about this okay. this is a forty five minute episodes one of the longer episodes of the season which I appreciate and This also was an episode. That was more more on like the a storyline. Actually I don't even think there was a B.. Storyline of this episode. was there so I'd like to see more of this season to but okay. Let's let's talk about the last week. Brian you weren't here We discussed it without you. I'm sorry Now it's okay. It's been a hectic couple of weeks leaks. What with That other that other big star wars thing coming out. Oh yeah wait. There's another big. Oh Yeah Yeah Yeah Okay so last week's episode ended with a shot of baby Being snatched up by a scout trooper and we pan over to show quill weighing in the dirt seemingly dead What a cliffhanger finger what a what a great clipping or for this episode? So this week begins with an awesome sequence Focusing on to scout troopers this is something so unexpected guy was like oh we're gonNA start these storyline of you know Mando in crew being held up in that contain. No We'd start on the the Scout troopers that are escorting escorting bb. Yoda and They you know keep on hitting bb at this is so funny. It feels to me like a call all like I'm not even sure if t has seen troops. Have you seen troops bread now. I haven't troops it's a it's a fan for those people that don't know there's is this fan film out there that was created. When was this like in the nineties? Maybe it was in the ninety s and it was written by Kevin Rubio who went onto to write some episodes of star wars the clone wars yet. It was so funny it took place Basically telling you what what the lives of stormtroopers were star wars version of COPS. Yeah yeah actually. Yeah it was a cops Bertie. It's been so long that I forgot. It was even a parody of cops put in so long I forgot cops was the only reason. Yeah I know about about troops that it's a parody of stormtroopers. You know that's GonNa make it hard on that joke in Singing the song and the the new bad boys movie for you okay. Well the scene is like so funny like you said. It's only a seeing. That could could be done by Taika I. It almost makes me wish that we could get a like troops movie from Taika like I feel like that would be amazing. Not Not even just the troops movie but like honestly this kind of scene is exactly the kind of thing that I wish that we could see in the Star Wars Universe like I love comedy Regular listeners of slash from daily. No that and I've always wanted to see something comedic done in the world of Star Wars and it's always felt like it's somewhat impossible because so much of star wars has the MO is the more serious sci fi action adventure even though there are funny moments moments throughout Star Wars. They've never really gone full on comedy and there was there was supposed to be another series. That was in the works animated series that Seth Green was working on What what was that called? That was star wars tours and they did an entire season of that. Yeah before it got shut down. Once Lucasfilm got picked up by it Disney. Yeah by the way at my screening of rise of skywalker. I was there at the first screening at the Chinese theater. And he was he was one of the people there And he was also at the premiere like He. Actually if you go to my video blog from the premier he is photo bombing us as we are giving a reaction coming out of the premier a bunch of time so he is a hardcore star wars fan but yeah so but to get back to what I was saying is. I've always wanted to see something like this in Star Wars and it was so wonderful to see. Did this play out like this and I didn't even realize that it was Suday kiss and Adam pally until I looked up immediately afterwards I was like I needed to know who it was. Couldn't recognize the voices which is But yeah that's you know it's so funny and like and it's funny as it is like me even makes you cringe because they're punishing baby Odin. Yeah I winced a couple of times I know Jason Today Kiss but who is empowered polly. I don't Know Adam. Polly Anna Palley He he's probably best known. I starring in the unfortunately shorter lived. ABC Series Happy Endings It lasted for three seasons. It is a very very funny show. He is hilarious Larry on it. He's also in iron man Three he's the guy who's in the news van that helps Tony. He's like a real big Tony Stark fan boy. Oh yeah yeah so. That's Adam Pally I. I really loved the gag about them shooting. I really like how the man delorean's leaned into the fact that stormtroopers are terrible. Herbal or their masks are terrible This is something that David Baloney kind of played up in rebels as well like there's a moment where captain racks who spent his life as a deadly Lee clone gets into stormtrooper armor and can't hit anything as soon as he puts the mask on and ends up taking it off and throwing it stormtroopers in order to actually. Shall we start hitting stuff. Well here's the question. Is it the heavy stormtrooper armor that makes it hard to like move and eight or is it those blasters. I think it's just like the cheap like they got the cheapest visors they could so they can't even see straight yeah. It's funny because I was thinking last week when we came to the opening of this town. And there's the two scout troopers on speeder bikes guarding. I was like Oh. That's a lot of money to spend for just like a small scene of two. You people guarding this thing. But they're you know obviously they're making use of these. Two speeder bikes that they've built. Yeah Yeah so Okay so one of the troopers keeps on hitting baby yoga. The other keeps on coming up with reasons to See what's inside the bag I I knew you like okay. So eleven dench shows up and he takes the two troopers in spectacular fashion And but by the way who knew the takeaway was such a great action director. I know obviously thor ragnarok showed off yet some chops but I was just really impressed by this whole episode as a whole like you know you. Don't you know I don't want to discredit anybody. But obviously when you sign up for Marvel movie you get the Marvel Viz development team with their innomax and all that on board. You know what I mean like. That makes I'M NOT GONNA say it makes a bad director better but it does definitely at some Polish this here you know. I don't know I I just love the the sequence of especially with Edgy. Eleven in the Spinney action that he does I th. I think that could be as much as the sort of boot camp at Farnborough who would still be coming out of the marvell school and Baloney Like it seemed like those two were presents a presence on the set the whole time and so that if there were any of those you know. Hey I'm in over my ahead moments which I doubt like after after seeing just the way scenes that feel action packed that don't actually have action in them in Joe Joe Rabbit I don't have any doubt that. YTD would have all these jobs. I don't know why I was in any way of doubting outing him. Because he's impressed me at every step of the way and I've been a fan of his since no seeing Eagle vs shark how many decades you know fifteen years. Go or something I want to mention here because we're on baby owed for a second that Bob. I had a quote this past week and he did admit that baby. Yoda does have a name. mm-hmm he knows what it is. It is not revealed in this episode So That's interesting and he also said that he was reprimanded by The show runners of the show for calling him Bibiana so Brian. I guess you were right all along. I mean I've been saying it but it's like I think everybody laughs at me because because I still try to call him like the asset or the child but I think baby Yoda calling calling baby otas going to confuse more people in the long run. It is but it's hard it's hard to google asset is. The problem is no I I understand it like from an SEO perspective. That's why if you'll notice in my review of this episode for Slash Film mm-hmm I referred to him as the so called baby. Yoda in quotes fair. Enough Fair enough Okay so chapter eight. The title was revealed redemption. I don't think there's any like secret Layers here is there. Is there something missing. Ah Title No okay Okay so Mando carga endure all Holed up in this Cantina. And there's an army of stormtroopers setting setting up an e web heavy repeating blaster outside which is a weapon..

I think trying to get hot chicks to do comedy but I remember he had a a legit female comic on is like a judge or mentor. or You weren't that girl as well. That's a good way to end. A podcast Jonah question that when a skew well know Paulie was great to me. polly's to take me out on the road. He was one of the few guys that did you know. And so. Yeah the whole battle with Rogan aside. I definitely appreciate it. All the Paulie different you put me in his movie and OPALA doesn't get the credit you know he's he's in. He's very supportive of other comics can be I mean you know Oh. My favorite polly story is the and then we can end. Is it real quick. I was opening for him in La. Hoya and We would have dinner at the Chinese place across the street. Eight and so we had dinner that Friday and then the following Saturday we met again for dinner and I turned to the the blonde next to him on the Saturday and I was like. Oh Nice to see you again. He's give me like the cut. It wasn't the same girl but of course he has type so it was so mad at me that I made the mistake and and said it was the same girl and it wasn't sometimes comedy does not pay in dollars. And if you WANNA know that polly's type is just look at the first album cover for the band poison where they look like four chicks. God bless Paul Joe Rogan. I mean there's so many people to thank for the store store rogan Joe Ideas Adam polly Jeff Ross and Brian Moses for you know roasts post-battle was really the first show to Help the stores resurgence Because that was a you know a show. Kind Kinda Molyneaux Edgy type of humor and and that coincided with Joe Coming back so in jeopardy Scott on TV. which made it even bigger than raising and Brian? Moses is literally hosted at every week for six years which is crazy because you know in. La Comedy even Dublin's was just round for a year. We're to a Dublin God. I'd play Dublin's but it was hot. For like two years it wind then you had the friars club in Beverly Hills The shows usually burn out in like two years. "Barrier entry for friendships. I agree. I'm I feel the same way nor do I expect people that I dislike to be not like, my friends that that seems like such a narcissistic point of view. Uh? Oh, I don't. But I guess you know it. Yes. That's true. But like it gets tricky. It's if someone like caused me a ton of pain in the new or like going out to dinner with him. I might feel like I might. I mean, I which I I know is wrong. So I probably wouldn't even say anything because I would feel wrong about saying it, but I probably would feel bummed out by that. So I understand the emotion of feeling like this person should be on my side type of thing. But like, I, you know, my good friend sued me, once it was kind of the end of our friendship because of that, obviously. And but I had other friends that were still quite good friends with them him. And I wanted them to be you know, I I think what you're saying is right about Chenal things that are happening. It's reasonable to feel upset or betrayed or something. Even even when that's not really happening, but understand why people feel that way. Well, people also just have a handbag of things that they normally feel that they're prone to feel and I have bad ones. But for whatever reason, I'm not prone to feel betrayal. Yeah. That's not one of my first stops in my motions, as I think, generally, the world's really complicated. I don't think anyone's ever offered the decision of you wanna fuck dex over not. And there was nothing else going on and they chose. Let's fuck backs over. I don't really think that's ever happened. Yeah. That's a nice way of looking at. I've other weird things. So. Did George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez not get along during out of sight. I didn't see I couldn't find anything about that. Oh, I didn't know that room heard. I don't know. It's just one of these well-known things. Okay. I believe you. I just didn't. I couldn't find anything. Also, he's shot that car trunk seen as one long take. But then after test audiences responded poorly to the scene, he reshot it in a different form, turn Tino know, Soderbergh out of. Oh, okay. I didn't know when I think trunk scene. I go the like signature shot of turn Tino is trunk opening like a little bit of skewed guys looking in the trunk. So that awesome trunks scene shot it in one Tae. Oh, but then I guess test audiences didn't like it. So he they reshot a really, oh, very interesting. Yeah. Sing it says the original version is available as a bonus feature on the DVD all which I only have the DVD Blu Ray. Yeah. Well, it might be on to watch the single take one as to love auction commentaries to watch with the commentary on several time. I'd say I watched the ocean's eleven commentary and the good will hunting commentary, obviously almost as many times as I've watched it without. Oh, wow. Love that behind the scene. Well on ocean's eleven you should watch that one. Because it's your boyfriend Brad Pitt boyfriend Matt Damon, George Clooney, I think. I think it's just those three hockey. I believe they got them to do that. I know. Yes. When DVD's were knew you would do it was like a thing. I always worry about the one ashen. I did for the punked box set. We were very young. I just worry about that one. I don't know. What I I could imagine there's bad stuff in there. Okay. So he talks about how French fries are extra bade Mia. Now. Now, we know that the really really bad, and that is from New York Times article that came out and last year cloudy don't want fries with that. So people wanna read up on how bad French fries are. They can check it out. I recommend skipping it and just keeping in French fries. French fries right now. Your bet you're hungry as hell very hung gravityless. How many Jewish people in the United States? He thought it was less than one percent. In two thousand twelve the American Jewish population was estimated at between five point five eight million depending on the definition of the term, which constitutes between one point seven in two point six percent of the total US population. So let's settle onto point two. Okay. All right. So that's not the diff- two point two. We make it a goal to get every single Jewish person as a listener on here. Sure. That'd be great love that too. That's it. That was it. Yeah. Oh, great. Yeah. Adam Polly, Adam pally, Adam pally is a pal of mine while is pronounced the Al was very sweet, I really enjoyed. And smart, I went back to work because you know, leash had worked with him for a while on that show and working with Alicia Burt. And who's so lovely. I really wanna get her in here. She so fun normal down earth. And yeah was excited to get back to work and tell her that it went really well. And then we really love Adam. And she said he's on the phone as people to be around daily. That's nice. Yeah. Is so funny. I hope he gets to just work and work and work and work and work and can work me too. I love you modest mile savvy.

"I am spoken for for months. No, I have been following him. Not on foot his career long time. You read a crush on him. Oh in improv crush for. Sure. But I didn't know him. You know, it was funny because he's in this group. Hot sauce was or is. I don't know if they still perform, but it's a Adam bench shorts and Gil Zaeri, and it's three of them in there. So funny together so good, and I would never miss a hot sauce show. They were once a month. Love would accompany nerd you are. It's kinda sad. When I talk about this stuff because it totally is not the case anymore and period of your life that yes pass much makes me sad. All periods are like that. But I think it's except periods. Well, no, they're gonna stick around for another twenty years for you. But I think it is easy to look back in kind of feel like a sense of loss that it's gone. Yeah. But I think it's better just go. No. That was the perfect thing for me to do at that age. And now I'm doing the perfect thing for me at this age. It's it's also okay to have some sadness. Yeah. It doesn't take away from the other happy stuff. But you're you can have both things happening. I think it's okay. What I feel that way about dancing. I used to go dancing all the time. And I loved it. I mean, sometimes I was aided by MD or whatnot share. But not always in. I. Really love dancing, Akkad, dancer, three hours. What a workout that is. And it was just I think it added value to my life, and I often fantasize like go to nightclub and just dance. And then that feels crazy to me, and you also wouldn't like it. I went to a birthday party about a month or so ago, and you are also invited invited to that party. But you you couldn't come to light for me. And it was at a bar, but in the back there was a go talk. Now, it just like the back area was like the dancing area. So it was kind of like a club back there sort of. So, you know, we went back there, and we were all dancing, and it was so fun. But perfect ten Charlie did turn to me and say, can you imagine? If Dax was here he would hit. Not because of the dancing. Of course, the dancing is so fun. But it's all the other elements that we've outgrown like the guys and stuff being junk, everyone, shoving you every two seconds. Like kind of having to keep an eye out on your bag all of these practical realistic things that are happening there that make it the older you get like less tolerable mid. They aren't outweighing the good parts of dancing part. And then if you're sober on top of that. No, no, no, no young enough to find a place that has a very spacious dance floor. That's not a very popular place. So I-, plenty of room to dance. Then of course, it's got to have music. I like what I was going to be very hard to find. This is going to be very challenging. But I do dance at the house quite a bit. Yeah. Yeah. All dan. Sometimes for a half hour. Forty five minutes at the house. Any place can be your dancefloor guns of you want to leave. Friends von. Yeah. So Adam Polly, great, dancer Halley is a great improviser, and it was exciting to have him on. 'cause I was such a big fan texted. Anthony, when I left about say said we required Adam pally because he was my roommate when I was at the height of this time in my life. Yeah. And he was like your life is just come so full circle. It's crazy. And that was true. And it's really exciting. I was really happy for different reason when we left the interview, which is I had seen him be really funny in sarcastic. And I was nervous going in like does he have a been emotional sidehill be willing to share with us? And he very much did now's very relieved about that. So just didn't know he does as he said on there. He likes to bomb and stuff like it's off on it. And I was like I would have he wants to do that on this show. You know, like what if you want to just eat a big shit sandwich for ninety minutes a little nervous about that? But it wasn't very sincere. Nice show. Nice. I liked him a lot. Okay. We'll so you mentioned the ninety nine year lease between

"C. Whatever. Don't really want to be reminded of it. When I walk by default. Well, Adam thank you so much for coming. You're really really sweet and lovely. And thank you so much for having me in Champaign, Illinois is on YouTube yet, you do you guys improvident not a ton? No, it's the happy endings dudes who created it long. So the scripts are really really fast and really tight, and it's got that same kind of whip cracking smart. So you you don't really have time to improvise. You just gotta like really, do you see this says everything about you? Because people who end up working with show creators from other shows the been on says, everything that's nice. I mean, there are a lot of people that won't work with me again. Manny. But yet cast a sp- specifically in those happy these guys, Casey Wilson. That's like, you know. Yeah. That's kind of where I go to figure it out. Well, that is what I want you to do. I want you to just tiny bit less of his like burning those bridges. I will try okay. Because I like you I like to imagine some of it is based on the same reason. I burn bridges which is just like I'm going to beat you to making fun of me. And then you end up kinda. Yeah. Self sabotaging. You'll feel you're worth it. Yeah. I know I know that you know that. But I also like I kinda liked the feeling of not being worth two which is dangerous. You're like, you know, what you're like in on. We talked to Jay Johnson. He made a movie about gambling. You're one of these people that likes losing like you could be like to lose love gambling. I love losing the feeling of losing. And you like I heard this about you two before you got here is that you liked bombing. I. So interest. I like the than to kill. So I kind of. No, rare bomb though with like also not burning bridge. I think we do it. I can. And I'm really working older. I will figure out that nice out of that as a young, man. You don't care. You're like, you don't even think about it. And I wondered is you were coming in until Monica reminds me of is like when I graduated high school when they gave me the diploma fake tripped. And I knocked over these huge planners off this four foot high stage was such a mess. Everyone's so embarrassed for me except for the four dudes. I was trying to impress. I love that. That's my sweet spot too. But now that I'm forty three. I'm like, oh, so also little selfish narcissistic, sure who to lower a thousand people's experience in raise four people. But at the same time, the self-awareness of like being like, this doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Well, that's true. No, it's gonna diverse in the way that the that. We're all like, we're you're here. Now, forty three matter. I say I saved the I got up. A typed out letter from the principal. And it's the first sentence of it was once again, the many will bear the burden of the few the floral arrangements, you destroyed costs three hundred and eighty dollars taken out of your class valedictorian. I do own that is a true comedian. Like, I remember when when Amy Schumer like dove to the ground in front of Kim and kinda west. Yeah. People are like upset that is we should all heard the job. That's her job is to fall down there. Like, you your job with destroy that floral and look at it doesn't matter. All right. Well, I really don't you? And I hope you come back. I would thank you for having me. All right. I am. And now my favorite part of the show. The fact check with my soul mate, Monica Adleman. Monica. Welcome to the fact, check Monica pattern with the facts. Yeah. Monica original tune for my soul, mate. Maximum mouse myths. Yeah. That's an original. That was part of the song. It was. Yeah. I didn't even have to tell you. It was one of the lyrics in the song. Well, I liked it almost sounded like. Dentist's him. But fire love that song hearken back. It was an Oma but not enough to get sued by them. No, we'll make that clear about my singing is I can't even hit the same notes in repetition. So you could never prove that I stole anything. That's one of the upsides. It's really one of the silver lining, the tone deafness. Oh, Adam pally came by do you want to say Adam Polly, I have to correct in my mind, I have to say his last name before. So his full name because I'm afraid I'll say, Adam poly. But it's Adam Palley Palley. I don't have that problem mainly because I've used superior diction. That is why. Yeah. No. Because I've been very well-spoken. I
