The Crossover NBA Show with Chris Mannix
A highlight from Player Participation Policy & Team's We're Bullish On
"It's the Crossover Sports Illustrated NBA Show. Breaking down the latest news, rumors, and everything in between. Here's your hosts, Chris Mannix, Rohan Nadkadi, and Chris Arrington. This is the Crossover NBA Podcast. I'm Chris Mannix, joined for the first time in what feels like a long time my two colleagues over at Sports Illustrated, Chris Herring and Rohan Nadkadi. Guys, good to be back with you with the, what, three weeks, I guess, before official media days. I saw some postings, Rohan, as you shake your head. I saw some postings about media days being October 2nd. I guess that's the go -to day for most of the NBA teams, but we're inching right up on it. I just can't believe we're here. It feels like the season just ended. I'm excited. I just, I'm not mentally prepared for this. I can sense the excitement in your voice. I can say it's palatable. I can sense that excitement in your voice. All right, so on this episode, guys, I want to talk about, you know, teams that we're bullish on and teams that we might be a little bit bearish on. We're each going to pick a team that we're high on and we'll pick a team that we're low on. Before we get to that, though, we're recording this shortly after Adam Silver's post -board of governors media availability. And this media availability, the biggest storyline to come out of it was the NBA board of governors. They approved a new player participation policy, which is really a continuation in the NBA's war on load management and to a broader extent, their war on tanking. And a couple of the highlights of this new player participation policy, the policy is managed. It's rock teams have to manage their rosters to ensure that no more than one star player is unavailable for the same game. Ensure that star players are available for all national television and NBA in -season tournament games. Another new wrinkle to the NBA calendar and maintain a balance to the number of one game absences for a star player in home and road games. Basically, this combined with the minimum threshold for a number in terms of number of games played for stars to be eligible for postseason awards. This is just another lever Chris Erring that the NBA is pulling to make sure that do whatever they can to make sure that players are as available as often as possible. How do you feel about the player participation policy, which is now permanently part of the NBA rules? Look, I think it goes a little bit further than I would have gone with it, frankly. I mean, I remember when the Spurs were, you know, doing this and sitting entire, you know, half their roster out, but it was the Spurs and there's a part of me that feels like they know what's best for them as far as their rest. Sometimes they have a lot of old players on their team just because of the sorts of guys that, you know, tend to gel with the way Popovic coaches them. If you want to do that and you have the ability to do it and still pace your team the way you want to, so be it. That's the point of the league. I understand that there's a money factor to it and everything else. And I understand the disappointment that fans feel. I've been in that boat where I've gone to games or taken my nephew to a game and somebody sitting out and it is frustrating. And I can only imagine how frustrating it is for people that only get to go to one game every few years or something like that. But it's also kind of the risk you run with a sport that relies on people's health. And so I am interested to see how it's going to work when you have guys that have stuff that they're trying to manage. The Clippers are always an interesting team like that where people have complained about the way they do stuff for years, but they also have a guy that is chronically injured. And so I'm curious to see how it will play and how it will actually look. But there's a part of me that feels like the real fix to this is just either shortening the season or lengthening the season and allowing the 82 games to be played over a longer span of time. I don't really love the idea that you're going to tell teams that they can't sit out, even multiple guys, if they want to or if they frankly feel like they need to, if there's data that's telling them that that is what would serve their team the best.

Ja Morant in limbo again as he awaits review of latest gun video on social media
"Grizzly star John morant says he takes accountability for the latest video in which he is apparently seen holding a firearm. His statement came shortly after NBA commissioner Adam silver expressed disappointment that the Memphis guard is under investigation by the league again. Silver met with morant after a similar incident in March and suspended him for a games. Silver said he was quote shocked. When he saw the video during a televised interview with ESPN before Tuesday's draft lottery in Chicago. I'm get cool ball.

"He's already been punished by his team, which is a smart move if you're the grizzlies, hurry up and suspend them. But they say it's a suspension, Gilbert, because they're saying he's taking time off, so he got to suspension, because it hasn't been labeled that. Because he got suspended for two games by the grizzlies. And now he's taking time off to reevaluate. It's like, it's like your business, right? You have your employee who's a very great employee for you. You don't want this outside Kennedy, you know, giving you 30 games that it messes up your business. So you're trying to get in front of self imposed. Yes. So they're probably just one because Adam silver can't do anything. He can't suspend them into all the evidence is presented. Now, how do you present evidence that there's no weapon? You can't prove that he used the airplane with the weapon or you don't have any proof of any of that. So you can't really do anything unless he admits it. And that's what I did. I admitted those were my guns. So once I said I admitted it, they was like, we're going to give you 50 games. And I said, well, there wasn't mine. How does that work? So once they realized that, you know, because they had to do their investigation, you know, the fingerprint and the stuff and realized, oh, there's no evidence. So they were like, well, then for doing this and mocking the whole situation and not taking it serious, you know, we're going to suspend you for this. So when you got introduced starting lineup, did your teammates act like they were shooting guns at you? Yeah. So you remember what? I know, I know, right? But what you thinking? You remember the movie even given Sunday? Yeah. Every time they scored a touchdown, it would do it the whole team was doing things. And that was like the part of it. We all came up with like, ill, when they called our names, we're going to do it. Yeah. We was going to Cleveland the next day, and we were thinking about throwing a bomb, and then we all fall down. Oh, no, no. No, no. Yeah, I know. I know, I know. LeBron James sets new scoring record
"Kareem Abdul-Jabbar overtook world Chamberlain scoring record in 1984. But later that year, the man who would surpass jabar was born in Akron, Ohio, LeBron James went from prep school to the prose at 19. James would play 11 years in Cleveland with a four year break in Miami where he impressed coach Eric spoelstra with his work in games and practice. He doesn't get bored with that process. You know, you can tell he's like a computer. Laker coach darvin Hamm says James still works hard at being a complete player to date. He's just a kid. It was grown before our eyes and the last 20 years at this level has done nothing but play the right way and make the play that's in front of them. NBA commissioner Adam silver says James breaking the record is impressive because of his style of play. I think it makes it that much more special that he'd rather be known for his assists than his baskets. James is achievements include four NBA championships and two Olympic gold medals. I Norman hall

The Plan for Big Tech Accountability
"Now, in terms of getting cooperation on the espionage side, you've got to get the executives from meta the executives from Google, the executives from all of the large social media companies in to talk to you about TikTok and other issues, including penetration of their own organization by agents of the Chinese Communist Party. Duke anticipate anticipation from big tech on this committee. Well, I'm sure some big tech executives are not eager to talk to the committee. But the approach I'm taking now is one of, okay, I want to give you an opportunity to explain your position. I come in with certain preexisting biases. If you want to make a counter argument, that's fine, but we're going to do it out in the open for the American people to see. And if he refused to comply with that discussion and my honest desire to have that discussion, I think ultimately that's going to be a bad look for your company. And I think you're going to get you're going to invite more scrutiny from Congress than there already is. The fact is, big tech has to confront the growing suspicion about their allegiances, the growing suspicion about their practices, the perception that there's a complete lack of transparency and it's not just my committee that would have an interest in that. It's going to be Jim Jordan's committee that has an interest in that, particularly when it comes to the perceived collusion between certain big tech companies and the Biden administration. So they ignore those questions. They ignore our request to testify at their own peril. And just look at what's happened in TikTok over the two TikTok in the last two months. There's been a sea change in Congress in terms of recognizing the threat posed by TikTok. We had an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in favor of banning TikTok on government devices. I have a bill for the broader ban that has democratic support. Mark Warner is talking about the threat posed by TikTok in the Senate show. If you hesitate, if you prevaricate, you're going to invite more congressional scrutiny and opposition. So I hope that that doesn't happen. I also want to give an opportunity for the tech companies that are out there that I know have a more patriotic view right now or at least still think of themselves as American companies and recognize how essential they are to us winning this long-term competition with China. I want to give them an opportunity to talk about how we win, right? We can not win this unless we have American companies that are out innovating their Chinese counterparts and indeed think of themselves as Americans. So I think I don't think we'll have any problems getting big tech to comply. If they do, it's just going to be very problematic for them.

Who Will Serve on the China Select Committee
"How many members will it have? Do you know who is going to be the ranking minority member and what members are you certain are going to be on the committee with you? There will be 9 Republicans and 7 Democrats. So a smaller committee analogous to the size of the Intel committee a little bit smaller than that actually. I actually think that is an asset. It makes us more nimble. It makes our ability to respond to things quickly. More obvious and easier. As for the specific membership of the committee, starting with the ranking member on the other side, I don't know. That'll be for Hakeem Jeffries, the minority leader to decide entirely. I do know this. We have a lot of Democrats with serious national security street Cred that have asked me about it and have said they've asked Hakeem Jeffries to be considered for ranking members. So I'm cautiously optimistic that they're ranking member will be someone of substance. Not only with the right temperament, but with the right background to bring to bear on these issues and that will make our work. Again, more bipartisan. So that's a good thing in my opinion. But we'll see. That's entirely up to the Democrats to choose. And I spoke with Hakeem Jeffries on the floor yesterday. I just reiterated the fact that, you know, I'm not going to use this to score cheap shots. This is about putting in America, putting America in a position where we can win this new Cold War, and we can deter World War three in the near term where you can enhance our deterrent posture. So my hope is they'll participate. On our side, similarly, Kevin McCarthy will make the decision. I'm submitting a list of a recommended members, but it's ultimately up to the speaker. He's got to balance a lot of things.

"Worth it there are better solutions. It's not reality. It's not going to happen. It's still fun to think about. Clearly you hate fun. I'm famously pro fun. I like the idea of it. I mean, it works in the Premier League for a lot of different reasons. Obviously, the NBA is not the Premier League. But in terms of just address a couple of the points that you were worried about. I mean, money wise, there's a ton of money to go around. So some of those teams that get dropped end up with these parachute payments that ends up as a trampoline payment for the teams that get graduated to the upper league. So I think there's enough money to go around the arena thing could be interesting, right? I mean like all of a sudden you've got the Lakers playing in the med and arena and it's like 5000 fans or whatever they hold. That could be interesting. But no, it's not going to happen. It's highly unlikely. I just like the idea of it theoretically and it's just unfortunate that the way that the NBA is formatted. It's just they could never pull it off. I want to go back to the tanking component though. You mentioned that the odds have been flattened, which is an important point here. Because previously, the worst team got a 25% shot. One in four. That kind of makes it worthwhile. Second shot was 19.9%. And third wars was 15.6%. All of which are better than the flat 14% that the worst three all have right now. Silver said he gets it that it's a once in a generation player and one Benjamin, but should teams be tanking. It feels like with a 14% chance that, you know, it's not a very good shot and you're throwing away your entire season. I'm not hugely, I was before previously very proud. When it was the sixers doing it, it was cool. Extremely protag. But now that the odds have been flattened, like it really de incentivizes it for me. Not to me because it's so like a level playing field. Like what's the alternative? You know, you still are within the current setup of the system. If you finish in that bottom three, you're still giving yourself the best possible chance, even if that chance is worse than it was ten years ago, you know, you might as well give yourself that chance then no chance at all or a worse one. To me, they have to start thinking more creative solutions and there's been there been some out there. There was the draft wheel that had nobody understands. Nobody can explain except for Zach law. I was into the draft wheel. I didn't hate the draft wheel. I didn't hate the draft wheel. You want to talk about fun. Let's spend a literal wheel baby, you know? There's, of course, getting rid of the trapped, which I think is something that be considered, you know, is there some kind of rookie pool that's bigger for certain teams or teams can bank it, they can work on it for a few years, or is it, I didn't realize that you were staunch capitalist. Free market, a free market capitalist where everybody controls their own destiny, which on its face. I like the idea of, but I'm less of a capitalist and more pro labor, Jonathan. That's how I like to look at it. I'm cool with that. But then I think that our workers should get to choose where they want to work. Well, and that for 99.9% of industries out there, I'm a 1000% with you. But nobody's going to Memphis then. Nobody's going to disagree. So that's why that's why I think there needs to be that has to work in tandem with some kind of salary cap rehaul because I think the recall overhaul because I think the way to make it work is Oklahoma City doesn't have a high payroll, right? Like we need to make a system so that a team like the warriors, it's being a lot of money is never going to be in the mix for rookies, but a team that plans properly can somehow have saved up a lot of money to make it so that if my banana has to choose between 30 million from Oklahoma City and 6 million from the warriors, you'd think he'd take 30 million. And that's the kind of situation the league should look into trying to create. How they go about creating it, you know, a lot of people, a lot of people smarter than me of thought about the economics of it, but I think there's a route to get there. Yeah, I'm dubious on that in the same way that I don't think that there's any shot of relegation. But I do want to get to something that looks like it will happen eventually that Adam silver also talked about league expansion, which you and I have talked about on this program. He said that they're going to reevaluate it after the new TV contract, the current deal with ESPN and Turner expires after the 24 25 season. He's worried that there's a potential of diluting the talent pool. I don't worry about that. I say expand Vegas in Seattle, please. I hate expansion. Come on. You're out on expansion till. Again, famously anti. I'd rather, I'd rather have two less teams. I'm pro competition. You want to see it. I want to see the best players go out. Get rid of two teams, add two roster spots to every team. And let's make every regular season game more excited. Okay. One, I like the idea of Vegas and Seattle as NBA markets. That would be really great. But I would love to see basketball this time. Forget about the expansion part because now you've intrigued me. Delete two teams from the NBA and crush the hopes of some listeners right now. Go ahead. Your pro contraction, which teams are you getting rid of? Yeah. You love the NBA too much. You don't want to do anything. The players vote. Players vote on their two least favorite cities. That's how we decided. I mean, in that scenario, Oklahoma City is not long for this world. I just think that if Oklahoma City's only chance at competing is to draft someone and hope they stay there for ten years and not leave after 8 after that first big extension, I listen, I had a lovely time in Oklahoma City, I've talked about it several times on this podcast. Shout out to goro ramen. Shout out to Gunn izakaya, you know, lovely time in Oklahoma City. But if we're talking about how to get rid of tanking, that is part of the issue there is there are certain cities that free agents don't want to sign in. And the league, frankly, bears responsibility for putting teams in those cities. Now, what are those cities? I think the players should identify them, not me, but the players are not on this podcast. This was your idea. And this is a continuation of my life. I'm putting you on the spot here. Let's go through these teams, right? I'm not letting this go. This is going to be a dog with a bone scenario here. All right, so you've already deleted Oklahoma City. I'm getting rid of them for you. I think that the kings would have to be on that list, right? I mean, the longest playoff drought, and it's a city that has basically checked out on the team, even though they wanted the kings to stay, they built a new arena, and then all of a sudden the kings go in the tank. I love that the stat during the playoffs last year were no player currently in the NBA, has faced the kings in the playoffs, just wild, so they'd be up. Memphis is too good and they have John ass. You can't get rid of Memphis. Memphis is great. People do sign there. Orlando, Orlando would have to be in consideration. The pistons have a young core and history. They get rid of the pistons. I think that those would, I mean, you'd have to consider Orlando and Sacramento for that second team that you're trying to get rid of. Minnesota possibly. Again, John, to me, I'm not trying to just take myself off the spot, even though it's part of it, but if the NBA can identify through the Players Association like these are the two cities where players have very little interest in ever signing, that's

Like that's my people are talking about their own sports Equinox, you know, all four sports. A lot of people leaving out the T 20 Cricket World Cup. I'm personally not. Who would do that? Exactly. Very exciting sports weekend for me to say the least. Yeah, we have a lot of cricket talk coming up as well as this is now a Phillies podcast. So shout out to the Philadelphia Phillies for making the World Series, but we have a ton of basketball to get to. We will get into the surprising Utah Jazz, the not so pleasantly surprising Lakers heat and I'm not even going to mention the other team right now. We'll talk a little calves. Phillies are the one team that can make me root for the Astros, by the way. I just want you to know that. I'm aware of this. It's very strange that Philadelphia is in the protagonist role. Normally we play the heel. This time around we get to play the face. But it should be exciting. I'm very I'm thrilled for that whole scenario. But we have to get into Adam silver making some very interesting comments, row. He had an address to the NBA writ large, but mostly to the suns in the sun's arena about a bunch of things, including he's not so thrilled about tagging. He realizes that a lot of teams out there want to get Victor Wen Yama, the French freaky 7 four. He was standing next to Rudy Gobert in one picture, made Rudy somehow look small. To a lesser extent, I think some teams are also probably really excited about scoot Henderson, but obviously one Benjamin is the main guy coming up in the draft. And the commissioner called it a serious issue for tanking, said he's had hundreds of meetings row about this. And he said, we put teams on notice. We're going to be paying particular attention to the issue this year. And he said that he's thought about relegation, which I thought was interesting. And I'll get into a specific comments there as well. But what do you think about the commissioner wrapping the league on the knuckles for potentially tanking for Victor? It's interesting. First of all, it's funny to me that as you mentioned, you know, he was speaking the son's employees on behalf of the league, apologized to son's employees. For having to work for Robert's harbor basically, I thought it was a little funny that I guess employees was an open Q&A and eventually they got around to asking about tanking. I mean, sun's employees, I guess. I have similar questions as we do. You know, it's a bit of pet issue for him, I guess, as much as it's been an issue for any commissioner. I remember David stern talking about taking as much as Adam silver has. At least David's friend later in ten years, which is Adam silver has the last few years. Of course, they flatten the lottery odds. Recently, so now the top four teams, there's no one team that has some runaway chance. At the number one pick, it's like four teams with a 14% chance. To me, my issue is the league trying to at least he's acknowledged the reality of it, but the lead trying to pretend like there's anything they can do about it is a little silly to me. Unless they're willing to take drastic measures and frankly, I don't even know that relegation is the realistic one. There are measures for them to take that would maybe be easier to pull off than relegation that to me, that it was strange that he threw that out there. I don't even know how that's even remotely possible. He loves, he loves all things European soccer format. You know, the mid season tournament has been a bugaboo for him for quite some time. He says he thought about relegation, but he called it the stabilizing. He said it would disrupt our business model. And even if you took two teams up from the G league, this is a quote from him. They wouldn't be equipped to compete in the NBA. He's right about that. The other problem is, you know, on its face and I want to unpack relegation a little bit here. But on its face, it wouldn't work the way the G league is currently comprised because the teams that are in the G league are controlled by NBA teams and they're shuttling players back and forth. So how are you going? Let's just say theoretically you dropped the Knicks, right? And you graduate the next G league team. That's part of their team, right? They've got the control those guys. So it wouldn't work. They'd have to figure out a way to make those G league teams independent. And then how do you graduate those players if you're shuttling them back and forth? So it wouldn't work as it's currently comprised. But let's just fantasize here for a moment. Let's say you could make the G league teams independent. Do you like the idea of relegation? This is something that Isaac Lee and I former SI weekly producer Isaac Lee former heat check producer and I have talked about. He loves that idea. I kind of do too. I don't like it for the NBA. Listen, I'm all for strengthening the regular season of sports. I think it's a joke that the Phillies are in the World Series, which clearly be the Los Angeles Dodgers. You gotta know your audience. Don't make me have Shelby cut your mic. What American sports have done to the humble regular season is really sad to keep diluting the product. I'm all for finding a way to get excitement and stakes back into the regular season. I just don't think we're like, okay, let's play out this example. Let's say the mix team gets relegated, you know, are these teams going to be traveling to G league arenas for whatever the G league schedule is, you know, how is it going to work? Revenue wise, there are just so many questions that pop up that make it. I think frankly, impossible. There are too many logistical hurdles. Like practice, like all these different things that our players are going to get paid the same or they're playing a G league schedule as opposed to an NBA schedule. What if the Fort Wayne mad ants get promoted and the league revenue takes a hit because they're making one 30th of the money that the Knicks would during a regular season like there's all kinds of considerations like that that I think make it impossible so not to be like the wet blanket. I don't like obviously we know it's a delicate situation a complicated situation and it's fun to talk about, but to me it's so over the top impossible that it's not even that I can't even wrap my mind around how it would work in the invade to the point where I'm like, it's not

"From his control is a very involved process. And it's different than holding a job. It just is when you actually own a team. So Cameron, what changed now? Well, it seems like he was saying that it's tougher to sell it than to actually address some of the issues of discrimination. Issues of racism in the workplace. And I don't think that's the case. He sounded like a lawyer. I mean, he was talking about the rights, legally too complicated, was my takeaway from that comment he made. It's just something that they didn't want to have to deal with if they could avoid it. Exactly. As we would call it legalese, but we have to put this in context too. This is a Robert sorrow's first offense when it comes to issues within a workplace. When he bought the team in the early 2004, there had been some issues about him, you know, having some of these remarks within a workplace, you know, not too long after he acquired the team. And now that this has come maybe decades later, you're still dealing with these issues within this type of environment. It's a real issue, and I think Adam silver should have took that into context as well too. So maybe the league was complicit in allowing it to happen the first time around and by saying that Robert sarver should be maybe handled the same way that Don Sterling was handled, puts the NBA in the guilty box as well. Correct. And I think because we don't have any audio evidence that Donna serling did, that's probably why they thought they could kind of sweep this under the rug. But when you have big superstars like LeBron James and the past MVPA president CP three coming out to say, hey, we need to address this. This is a real problem they had to come and speak to. I think there's a multitude of ways to look at this. Let's think about it from the business standpoint too. You have so many more superstars that are close to or already have become billionaires now. So now we're trying to see more of this change of guard from players. Speaking up more, that's one, but also two, them looking to own teams as well. So I think that plays some factor in this as well. The balance of power is shifting and who comprises the NBA owners, will shift in the years to come. At least we were hope so. So that brings me to an interesting question here. The way that Adam silver handled it, he basically represents the other NBA team owners. If he was only going to give her a one year suspension and a $10 million fine, which by the way is the largest allowed by the NBA constitution, that was done with the other team owners blessings, wasn't it? At least they figured that this would be the best course of action. And also to $10 million in a industry that creates God knows billions. If you start thinking about the team is worth 1.9 billion, right? Yeah. And there are players on the team who make way more than that. So I don't think $10 million would even be a dent in his pockets either. You mentioned that LeBron James carries a lot of weight here clearly in what he said in his comments about how basically the NBA got it wrong. What do we know about LeBron James's ambitions to join the NBA as a team owner? I think there had been previous rumors out there about this. I don't know if we Bloomberg news have reported this straight on, but that has been rumored before. I think just seeing some of his business acumen. You know, we can think of the family sports group as well too. This is not something new for him when it comes to ownership, even we start thinking about Spring Hill as well too. There's just so many opportunities out there for him, specifically just being the face of the NBA. Going back to what you were saying. It's a business. And business is being affected. PayPal, who was associated with the team, says, no, if you're going to stick around, we're not. And there you go. So as you start having the advertisers and sponsors speak up, you'll see more change of guard within the industry as well. This is something where as we get more into the ESPN story and we're learning more about it. It's pretty severe. At first. Very damning. It really is. And when we really got into it, I had to say to myself, and I like Adam silver, but I had to say to myself, dude, why are you going soft? This is very serious. "That team from his control is a very involved process. And it's different than holding a job. It just is when you actually own a team. So Cameron, what changed now? Well, it seems like he was saying that it's tougher to sell it to actually address some of the issues of discrimination, issues of a racism in the workplace. And I don't think that's the case. He sounded like a lawyer. I mean, he was talking about the rights. Legally too complicated was my takeaway from that comment he made. It's just something that they didn't want to have to deal with if they could avoid it. Exactly. As we would call it legalese, but we have to put this in context too. This is a first offense when it comes to issues within a workplace. When he bought the team in the early 2004, there had been some issues about him having some of these remarks within a workplace, not too long after he acquired the team. And now that this has come maybe decades later, you're still dealing with these issues within this type of environment. It's a real issue. And I think Adam silver should have took that into context as well too. So maybe the league was complicit in allowing it to happen. The first time around and by saying that Robert sarver should be maybe handled the same way that Don Sterling was handled, puts the NBA in the guilty box as well. Correct. And I think because we don't have any audio evidence that Donna serling did, that's probably why they thought they could kind of sweep this other. When you had big superstars like LeBron James in the past MVPA president CP three coming out to say, hey, we need to address this. This is a real problem they have to come and speak to. At least we will hope so. If you start thinking about 1.9 billion, right? Going back to what you were saying, it's a business and business is being affected. PayPal, who was associated with the team, says, no, if you're going to stick around, we're not. And there you go. So as you start having advertisers and sponsors speak up, you'll see more change of guard within the industry as well. This is something where as we get more into the ESPN story and we're learning more about it. It's pretty severe. At first. Very damning. It really is. And when we really got into it, I had to say to myself, and I like Adam silver, but I had to say to myself, dude, why are you going soft? This is very serious. He's a very likeable guy too, stands over 6 two. I met him once before too, but I think this was definitely a case of mismanagement as well. Tried to play more to the owners as opposed to what's best for the overall NBA league itself. We're in the entire new world nowadays. And there's just no place for discrimination in racism nowadays. "Obviously, I mean, this is a superstar driven league. You want to know what team Kevin Durant is going to be on and you only have so much flexibility in the TV schedule. So they've got to figure this stuff out, hopefully sooner rather than later. From a Lakers perspective, I hope Adam silver is bugging Shawn marks every single day. With text messages, phone calls and stuff. So is he traded yet? Is he traded yet? Is he traded yet? You know, just annoy him until finally it gets done. Yep. No, I agree. 100%. Get her done, Adam silver. Free the guy said, Westbrook's agent saying that he wants out, makes it hard to believe that Russ returns. It also goes against darvin ham's comments. Darvin ham's job isn't to trade the player. Darvin ham's job is to come up with ways to use the players that are given to him. And right now Russell Westbrook is one of the players that's given him. So nothing he's doing right now is outside the parameters of his job. He's just saying what he needs to say if suddenly it changes and tomorrow Russell Westbrook isn't a player on his team and Kyrie Irving is that he's going to talk about the ways he's going to use Kyrie Irving.

"What has a slightly excited for the all star break is, but less so for me now because to be realistic if the Celtics win the last thing you want is time off on a ten game win streak. But it was a point where it's like, I need the break to get here just so to get out of this cycle and negativity every day. Yeah, it Trevor's being completely factual. I had a tweet about one of the marvel series that I really enjoyed and somebody just jumped all in there and I was like, you're an idiot, like, what about this? How can you enjoy things on the Celtics are so bad? And it's like that doesn't dominate my life, but yeah, that's something. Doesn't mean I love the game any less. I do can't step away a little bit, but otherwise. Things have improved in my side of things. For now, let's see where it goes. Speaking of things improving, the clippers, who have been playing really, really well. I mean, they beat the Golden State Warriors. They gave the Phoenix Suns a run last night and looked like they might even pull off a weigh in on the second night of a back to back against the sun's. And this is without Kawhi without Paul George now, Chris Haynes is the St. Paul George could be back within a month. I mean, if Paul George winds up coming back and then you're not far away from maybe I'm still skeptical, it's going to happen, but maybe Kawai comes back. I mean, you could be not far away from being from the clippers being the team. Nobody wants to see in the first round of the playoffs. Because they've already been a tough team to deal with as is. You get two guys like that coming back? That could shake things up quite a bit in the Western Conference playoffs. Yeah, absolutely, because it all does, if you're not going to get out of the plane, even with those guys back. But that leaves sans warriors grizzlies. One of those teams where all of a sudden you're like, man, I didn't want to have to deal with this. In a promise I'm not pandering to the crowd here, but it's the same thing with the Lakers. You don't want to look across and be like, Jesus now I got to deal with LeBron for 7 games. You just don't want to. You're hope is, come on, Minnesota and whoever wins the pillow fight for the ten. When knocked those two teams out, so we just don't even have to deal with it. Get in there and you take that 7th and 18 off we go, because yeah, I mean, in can't you see, let's say somehow. I mean, it's not crazy. There were only game an app behind. But the grizzlies passed the warriors. Can you see everybody talking to themselves into? Yeah, they're going to lose young grizzlies, fun, but they're going to lose to clippers with their guys or to the Lakers or whatever in the first round. Yeah, you could totally worry as I think less so..

"And they ultimately did trade out of that pick. But they tried to trade up to move up to draft John Moran. They tried all kinds of combinations that could get the grizzlies to bite. That would have been something, man. You know what's funny? That's the kind of thing I do in video games where like I'll acquire the first two picks in the draft and then draft two guys I'll go. But yeah, man, that would have been a lot of fun. It would have been and it's certainly it's up there in terms of the what if moments in the NBA, there have been a bunch of them in the past, you know, we think about what if Tim Duncan had joined the Orlando Magic back in the day. Remember when that seemed like it was a thing that was going to happen. This would certainly be something kind of a long those lines. Like, what if they had actually succeeded and we had jaw and Zion together? That would have been interesting, moving forward. But alas was not to be. Nope. All right, let's get into something that actually did happen. And we talked about a little bit yesterday, but Deandre bembry officially now with the Milwaukee Bucks, so they added another piece. And good. I didn't get still dealing with that counterattack injury and they still have roster spots available to go chase or gorgeous. So that could wind up being the landing spot for him. Yeah, it could be Goran dragic. We are waivers on Friday at 5 p.m. eastern. My guess is he probably has a pretty good idea where he's headed. By now at this point, now what will happen is that signing will likely get executed probably over the all star break. What generally happens is every team returns back from the all star break. A couple days before games pick up and they do kind of almost like a mini camp of like hey all right, let's get everybody back going again. It's a great time to incorporate a new player because you've got a couple days just to focus on practices, which are very limited throughout the course of the NBA season. So it would be surprised with that. I want to go back one thing. I didn't talk on the show. I missed that. Yeah, yeah, the expensive getting flagged for vaccine and disinformation here. Adam silver said, basically that he thinks the rules are unfair. He thinks now he was very, very, very clear that he believes everyone should get vaccinated and boosted. His unfair part was, why can home team performers and he was asked in contrast of Kyrie Irving. But in general, he said, why can home team performers not play while road team performers can? And he basically then kind of said that's not really his place, but he would hope. In this case, New York would re look at their mandates on vaccinations and we look at what the things. What was interesting was that kind of matches with John marks, Nash, others who have said, they hope Kyrie Irving will be able to play. At some point. Now, today, New York mayor Eric Adams was asked, they think he was directly asked, would you change the rules for Kyrie Irving? And he said, the rules are unfair. And he said, he is quote was..

"Guess is this is going to be a big part of next CBA negotiations. If not a, what they call a side letter negotiation, which is an agreement within the current CBA to amend things. Clearly the NBA and BPA have got very good at the happiest because they were forced to do over the last few years. That's a big part of why things are chugging along compared to, say, Major League Baseball, which pitchers and catchers were supposed to report this week. And nothing's going on there because at least at the major league level because they are in the middle of a labor battle. The way these NBA and the mbp have come together on things has been great and keeps everything moving. They very much have the approach of the business approach of half a watermelon is better than a whole grape, just keep things moving. We're all getting rich here. Let's just keep going. What I thought was interesting about his comments on the midseason tournament was he did change it to mid season or change it to in season. Versus mid season, basically saying there's no thought that it may be right in the middle of the season. And then he basically explained it's stealing a page out of European soccer. For those folks who don't listen or watch, there's a couple different things that happen in European soccer. There are domestic tournaments where it's like all the clubs in England. One of the coolest ones. I think it's the F 8. In the lower level. It's all the way down to the 8th division of soccer. It's like guys who are like, they're doing this part time playing soccer. Once a week and a couple practices a week while they're doing things. And they were one of those teams actually won a game that then just the way the whole thing works. They ended up hosting Tottenham Hotspur who was one of the biggest clubs in the world. And their little neighborhood field at their place and how they got in was really cool. It was a substitute teacher assisted a garbage collector on the game winning goal in their prior game to advance to hosting a game against one of the biggest clubs in the world. The NBA is clearly not going to go to that level. They're not going to be down into Trevor and I guess. We're out there playing. We would not have the Cinderella story where we get the win..

"This was a huge story throughout the course of the NFL playoffs. You of course no one was skipping NFL games to read these stories or anything. But it was still taking time away on the sports center and first take shows and all those things. So yeah, I think you have to say this and I think the team is very much would prefer it. But I think there's probably a little bit of not truth in here of we're okay if it plays out because we like the attention. I think we need to remember who Adam silver's speaking for, and in this case he's speaking for the teams. And of course, from the teams perspective, you're right. They do not want this information getting out there. If information on a trade gets out, it complicates things for a team in so many different ways, including if a trade falls apart. To trade falls apart, it suddenly that player that was in all these rumors is back with you, that's a situation to deal with. Not to mention, you can lose leverage in trade talks if suddenly word gets out. That's why we see so many teams, you know, a trade river comes out in the team immediately says, no, we're not trading him. Steve Nash, right? Or the Sacramento Kings with the tyrese Halliburton how'd that go for? Yeah, exactly. The leverage game is certainly real. But you're right. Big picture, Adam silver knows this. You absolutely want this information out there. You want this to be a topic of discussion. This is why there's no set parameter of what is an all star. What is an MVP? It's to generate discussion. So the NBA 100% wants these things to happen. You just have to say, oh, we'd prefer it happens behind closed doors. Maybe they would prefer that it's not quite this messy or whatever, but the NBA transaction game is better than any other league. It's part of why you and I are here, right? It's better than anything else better than the NFL better than MLB. And it's to the point where people are now following the NBA just to follow the transaction game. And just to follow the rumors and everything else that's happening. So I understand that it's an uncomfortable situation for teams to be in, but ultimately the league benefits when you get this type of discussion around two star level players getting involved in a trade. So I understand why Adam silver has to say it. I don't think even he believes it though. Yeah, that's exactly it. I mean, I always think too, right? Remember who he learned. He learned under David stern. David stern would do things on NFL opening day. Remember when he announced that's when the dress code got an ounce was like opening weekend of the NFL season. He would love to throw things out there during the baseball playoffs and those kind of things. It was always about, hey, let's get things locked in here to get the attention on our game..

"So when people say, you know, what's the end goal here for the NBA? Well, the hope is that players will start to come out of health and safety protocols and eventually the number of players exiting the protocols will exceed the number of players going into it and eventually hopefully within, again, we said they're going to revisit the current rules as of January 19th, hopefully by that point you have enough players coming out of protocols to where you don't have to be in this emergency situation, sign healthy body so you can play these games as of that point and then you can move on from there. Yeah, the vast majority of players are clearing within the ten day window and then it's usually somewhere between two and 5 days after that that guys need for kind of reconditioning and get themselves back up to shape occasionally if a player was really ill. It might take a few days longer than that. Some guys like demar Derozan are coming out and they're ready to go and he's ready to hit the ground running. So it really just kind of depends. So generally if a player gets put in the protocols, it's a minimum of a ten day absence barring consecutive negative test 24 hours apart or false positive or whatever the case is there. So what you're looking at is so now we've got our guys coming out of these going into them rather when we refresh going into the protocols. Generally, most teams are preparing for it to be about a two week absence. Yeah. It is what they're looking at. So that's kind of why they're looking at these ten days as we're probably going to sign the guy if the guy works out, we'll sign him to a second one. And then off we go because then by the time our guys ready to come back, we're ready, we've got a good full roster. And I know there are teams that are looking at this as we're going through it down. Maybe it's not the worst thing, because maybe we won't go through it later. So we're going to see where this goes, but we've seen now a couple players get put in it twice. This year, without it being false positives and we're still learning and figuring this out, is there's variants and everything else out there. It all just kind of just a dead day by day thing that we've got to kind of sort through and figure out. Absolutely. Absolutely. It's the world we're living in right now and the NBA has made it clear they're going to do everything they can to just push through and figure out a way to still get things done. Keith, anything else we need to talk about before we wrap up here? Yeah, that's just kind of interesting words just tweeted NBA today host Malika Andrews will interview Adam silver today at 3 p.m., so that's about a half hour from now where we're going..

Adam Silver Says Play-in Tournament Expected to Stay
"What are your thoughts on the NBA player playing tournament to keep it or scrap it? Keep it. I loved it. Made the last 10 12 games of the season. You know so many more teams. So many more fan bases were emotionally invested, You know, from 6789 10 11 12 seeds, so I loved it, And I know some of the players didn't Sorry to hear about it. If you don't like it come to, you know, go find another line of work because it was outstanding for the game. And the game is bigger than any individual. The best part about that to me about keeping it is that anybody think about tanking Making something part of the progress process. You can't do that because Everybody wants to compete more than ever before. Players like Look, we know you got to make organization decisions, but we have a chance to get in the playoffs, get playoff money and understand the playoff experience, then that's going to work for us, Adam Silver says is here to stay. It should stay. I don't care Anybody else has to say about it. This was a boon to the NBA. It was not a detriment when it comes to the end of the regular season. "That, like a warriors game, the ratings have been terrific. Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, is going to join us at 9 15 eastern this morning to discuss that and more. About the MBA. So you definitely want to stay tuned for that. We want to hear from you on the conversation that just seems to always flow back into our consciousness when we're talking about the MBA, and that is What they call the goat conversation, and Ochi said, If you talk about grace of all time you got to talk about Kareem Abdul Jabbar. I completely agree. But this tends to be more of a Jordan versus LeBron type of discussion. So let's keep it there and right and that's what will keep it. Charles Barkley did suggest that if the Lakers Get through the West and even beat the Clippers to get there and also beat a talent laden star laden Brooklyn nets that you might have to push LeBron ahead of Michael Jordan. In that debate. What say you ate today? Take ESPN 887293776 We go first to Keith in Texas. Go ahead, Keith. Yes. So here's my take on it. I think LeBron is the greatest of all top of fish generation. Thank Jordan was the greatest of all time for his generation. But I'll give the slide edge to Jordan just because He did it on one team. With multiple players around him coming in and out. There was only one or two players this state the same throughout the whole team. He never left and went to another place and had to say Hey, Tyree, will you come play with me? I need help over here and taste rings around which I feel kind of LeBron did So I give the edge to Jordan guys to question how much how much factors into the fact that Jerry Krause and Phil Jackson were on that team. I mean, I think it factors in a lot, but I mean, we could do the same thing with say. Tom Brady. With Tom Brady feeding go to be to win somewhere else. It's all about the right people at the right place at the right time to bring out the best in the player and that's what happened with George. I don't kiss Yeah. You look for a broad. It was just a little bit different, not having that support system in place. I mean that Zalmay Phil Jackson when the greatest coaches to ever question already joined was a huge part of that, But why would you leave and and just get Keith had a couple of things number one? You can't have a greatest of all time in a generation that your greatest of your generation but not all timings, all generations. That's one No, it's semantics, but still that and number two LeBron didn't ask. I read it to you. I think you're mixed up some stuff. They mix it up, but I think what he was just saying different players to me. If we're going to do that part of it. The bronze to me is a little bit harder. Because the consistency of Jordan was there. Scottie Pippen didn't go anywhere, right? I mean, it's so you horse stayed intact, stayed intact. Where? LeBron Every 34 years. He had to find a new face a new coach and do something. New system knew everything is just different. That's just hard runners. You never had his Phil Jackson. Where is Michael did Marilyn? How much Not even feel. Jackson as much as it is. Stabilized. Jordan was stabilized where LeBron No, it's a different coach. Like I said, every three years, it seemed like you know, a different order, trusted that the Bulls were always gonna have build a championship team around him. LeBron left Cleveland cause he couldn't trust that they would, But that's fair. When he left, it made sense. They were getting old players bringing in shack there was bringing an old guy's gotta beat them. By the way I get that, you know, people find that is an argument to be angry at LeBron for well, he's chasing raised. He did leave Miami to go back to Cleveland, the place he left to bring them the first ever championship because impractical Let's get some more calls here. Josh is in Maryland, Josh Are doing. It's a love Aren't you guys show in the morning? I'm going to say, Jalen Jalen Rose said something the other day, though, in an interview that I thought was really relevant. This is I feel like LeBron is only half of their skin is all about scoring aspect of things. When did he ever show you up on the defensive end of things. Jordan always showed up on the defensive teams that I got a job, So I'm gonna stop doing stuff just hold on one of the greatest cities down blocks in the history of the finals were not radio offensive plays in the history of the finals. Championship clinching defensive play happened is one of the most famous plays. So that argument Terrible. Keith in Illinois, please save this, Keith. Hey, what's going on, guys? Hey, So I'm I think that LeBron is better. Whatever you just look at how many times that LeBron was favored in the finals to Vegas on that how many times that Jordan was favorite in the Vegas odds? Believe LeBron was only favorite twice. Michael was favorite Every time whenever he started looking at the Hall of Famers. People forget that Tony CU coach was just inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. They say that Michael didn't have no Hall of Famers. So I think LeBron all day long. Yeah, I mean, again, the core of that team what they had they had pieces, and they trusted a zoo. All the issues that they might have had with Jerry Krause, he was still able to build the roster championship roster. They had a coach that stayed there forever. They all believed in it, At least again. The main players believed and trusted. I know Scott it in love, Jerry Krause, but they trusted Phil Jackson. You said it best that you had the consist consistency this stability. And when LeBron left the first time in Cleveland, he left for one reason they didn't have any of that. They didn't have none of that. But any goals to Miami? And they struggled for what? So they went to the fire, right consistency, stability. That's why you go to my and that's why you go. Then he went back like Jay said to Cleveland, and just okay, I'll help you All I know I left and let's just make it right then that got weird. So he bounced again. It's like it's like saying during Jordan's career, go ahead and put Clyde Drexler on the Utah Jazz with John Stockton and Carl Malone and let Jordan go against that team. Because essentially, that's what LeBron is faced with Kevin Durant, Clay Thompson and Steph Curry and potentially for LeBron James again could be facing James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie early. Yeah, put Clyde Jackson on the Utah Jazz and Let's see how that pans out for discoverable was. I mean, maybe they were. I don't know what this differently. Conversations that just never wouldn't even look right. It'll never get this. Certain player that don't look right. I know that look right to the right analogy. But you know what? How would he look in the Clippers Jersey? Great great for us. Great for the show. Maybe we'll find a way that he has to wear a Clipper jersey will discuss that after Jack DJ has this from Granger for all the ones who.

Once they get vaccinated will be able to do more in their communities, and that's something we've already begun talking to the players Association about so there'll be some real advantages and benefits to getting vaccinated for the players again. They have to make personal decisions at the end of the day, and I take that very seriously, and I take concerns very seriously. "And all I feel like I'm wishy washy about it like because you guys are making points that there's like no necessary reason for us actually played the national anthem. But the whole fact that taken a needle and the national anthem I'm really against that, because I'm burying myself. And if the other military man number one if they don't know how the armies will camp was, but In the Marine Corps. There was really rooted with, like making you understand the importance of the sacrifice of a million women before you. Okay, So let's go with that, Dale. Let's go with that. 1st 2nd. I understand your point. So what would you say to a player who's who takes a knee? Who's an African American? Who says Respect. I respect the flag. I respect the men and women in uniform. They're all heroes. I'm not doing it to respect the flag. I'm doing it because I wanted quality. I want to raise awareness. What? Which is a player like that lying? No, he's not lying. But the thing is, though he's got to take respect to what the first meaning and the reason for the national anthem to give respect to the people who take the sacrifice. The national anthem is not for a nut like for like the guy says they don't play on that at your funeral. Yeah, because the national anthem wasn't created for service people it was created. So it It is status makes civilians of America understand to not take things for granted that what you have with sacrificed. Okay, So let's go with that. Dale. I understand where you're coming from Dale. I get it. I get it in a different way. Because I would say OK, So what about the black lives matter after the national land? Okay, Karen actually make a symbol. I understand that was made for people making no unaware. I understand. What can we do? We owe back Dale. Your point is taken. I understand. So let me ask you this, though. Do you have a Problem with any of these black lives matter. Protests and I'm not talking about any violence in some of these protests. I'm saying I don't good they have They have their reasons. They're the reason that lose value at all. What about somebody on the back of their jersey? What? What about somebody on the back of their jersey with the black lives matter, Son? Are you okay with that? Absolutely. You get that thing. That's what we fight for. You can expect yourself in any way. But you just don't want to do it in your eyes. And you can Because, like now, it's just what did he mean That did he not mean that And you can completely avoid that problem by okay. I understand what that we're gonna stand. But now after the standing, I'm gonna take I mean, for about a minute, two minutes of silence and you guys are going to respect that. I do this Brian of the court, they could figure out so many more impactful ways to protest than to take taken me much. Just a big Let me be. Let me be very clear on this. I respect your opinion. I respect your service to this country, even though I think we disagree a little bit. When it comes to this stuff. I do think that you make some very valid points there, and I appreciate the fact That you're okay with these players with the black lives matter, Patches and the black lives matter Protests and that is why Dale besides the fact that you serve this country That's why I respect you because you're not a racist, you respect their opinions. You just You just have a problem them doing it during the national team, and you know what deal? I don't have a problem with the impact on quickly going because we have a crucible and every obstacle that we go to. They give us a story about a fellow marine that died and got the Medal of honor. Right and what he went through in the sacrifice, the selfless sacrifice he made, And that's basically installs the pride enough to show that you must stand, Dale. I understand. I totally understand your point and I respect your opinion. We got a bunch of other people on hold. I don't have a lot of time here. We wouldn't have capitalist America. We wouldn't have what we have without A number of things. The Revolutionary War, the Civil War, getting through the cold War all and all and All of the everyone involved in all of those events should be revered and respected, and that's and that's why standing for the national anthem and giving those people your your respect is so necessary. Let's go to Tyler Tyler's next. Tyler, What's going on? What's up, Tyler? Okay. We lost Tyler. Let's go to Ted. Ted is next. Hi, Ted. What's on your mind? A dead like with that, Marine said, agree with all of it. The national anthem. The flag is part of our culture. Part of our tradition as a nation, and he did it right on With respect. It's about respect, and I don't have a problem with teams or individuals and they didn't want to respect that. Then stay in the locker room or if the They want to do away with a fine do away with it, but I do. Think that we should stop removed, trying to remove the flag and the anthem or all we're gonna be left with is from nobody. Nobody, their country That's not gonna happen. But Mark Cuban did was wrong. We're not going to remove the flag. Nobody's saying they want to remove the flag. That's not gonna be removed from arenas. Ted, we're on the same page. You have nothing to worry about. When it comes to that. I could promise you, Ted, the flag is not gonna be removed. The national anthem is not gonna be removed. And I think even Mark Cuban eventually will admit that he made a mistake that I appreciate the call. Thank you. I think that Adam Silver understands this. But maybe a lot of players don't understand this that the reason that LeBron James makes the amount of money he makes is because of the fans. This is because of those people who either buy tickets to games when they can wonder we're in. We're out of a pandemic or they watch it on TV, or they buy jerseys. If you're offending these people, and it's there, it's totally you can kneel for the national anthem You can put on headphones. You can turn around. You could do what you wanna do, but that's going to offend a lot of people. The chance of those people engaging with your product and keeping your salary caps are keeping your salary The way that it is, is very, very small. Vincent, I apologize. I only got about 30. Seconds for you. Go ahead. My friends have been waiting on hold. Go ahead. I just want to say I agree with the earlier callers and JD regarding the national anthem. You know, it's patriotic at something that we grew up. Uh, pledge Allegiance E and we should continue the black black national anthem. I don't agree to that. Because We don't do that for the Mexican on them or the Asian antelope. Why is this on Lee for the black anthems you're talking about? We must rise. It's not the black anthem. Why you calling it the black anthem? That's not what it is. It's the black Nash man who said that? Who said that? You said who? What news said that it was the blood. What? Fox News who? Oh, and who said that? It's the black national anthem, Sir. With all due respect, that's misinformation. It's the rise up. Song that they play you and all the games. They never call it the black national anthem, Sir, With all due respect, you're incorrect. It's not the black national anthem, and when you use that type of device of language, it's wrong. All right, So here's the deal. We're gonna take a quick break. There was going to take a break The black last flashlight, and that's not what they call it for the first NFL game. Okay, so so here, So here's how we're gonna do. Ladies and gentlemen. Um, as you know. You may not know. I don't know. Larry Flynt passed away yesterday. Sadly, but he's lived a pretty damn good life by the way, and I wanted to get somebody on this show. That knows Larry Flynt. Personally. That can share stories about Larry Flynt. James harden obviously gio more used to be there. The tweet was deleted several minutes later. It was an inadvertent post from an automated app. Now more was hired by the seventy sixers less than two weeks after resigning as the rockets manager. And obviously he. The sixers are one of the franchises that have considered trading james harden john. Do you think that maury deserve to be fine for tampering. Here for that. Automated tweet just congratulating james or the one year anniversary of breaking the record. I don't think he should have been fined. But let me say this. I think adam silver is the best commissioner in sports. I think he's super smart. I think that daryl didn't endear has been a guest on our show. Many times may mason. And i both loved daryl. I think daryl didn't read the room here in other words. Tillman for tita. And the rockets are in a mess. Right now with harden. He has their best player. He wants out. Everyone's connecting the dots saying that darryl would love to have him in philadelphia so for darryl to poke that particular bear at this time is a bad look the way this went down and tell me if you agree is as soon as that tweet happened. Somebody in houston called the league office and said this is bs. Were in the middle of trying to navigate a crisis down here. And this guy's congratulating a player and making us look bad. And i think the league had to react at that point and so i wouldn't have find him but i understand why the league did. What do you think yeah. I think i was surprised when i saw that because i thought his tweet was pretty harmless. But i think you're right. I think that that you know james. Initially when he first asked for the trade didn't really have any representation. Okay didn't have an origin at that time is he's always kind of just like his mom and he's he's since tapped into wasserman those guys'll so he's got different representation now they can handle things but initially. There was a lot of consternation amongst the rockets. When darryl was interested daryl's sixers darrow. Were interested in trading for him. Right you know is there. Was there. Contact with darrell. James like there's this. There's a lot of stuff that really doesn't smell right with the rockets and the sixers and james harden and so whether this tweet was made it on time serving. It's just he. Daryl needs to be way more careful and the whole automated app. I just. I don't know if i buy that. I don't know if i bet either. I so i understand. Let's just say this ninety probably ninety eight percent of the time out of silver gets it right so i think that there's probably a backstory to this that all of us don't know and darryl poking the bear in houston at this particular time was probably not the smartest move. But it's not money they're owned by a bunch of hedge fund guys in philadelphia. It darryl can afford it. I think it'll probably go away now.

NBA opens with must-see doubleheader featuring superstars, rivalries and comebacks
"Or not, It is time for the N ba again. It's only been a little more than two months since LeBron James in the L. A Lakers won last season's title and now New season is starting tonight. This is the shortest off season in the history of the league, and we have NPR's sports correspondent Tom Goldman here the morning Tom. Hi, David. So few the NBA. Why rush into another season? Good question, and I'll give you a couple of reasons. Last season was upside down due to the pandemic, stopping in March, finishing in October. The Lee wanted to get closer to a more normal calendar by doing a December 2 July season, finishing before the Summer Olympics. And then getting on that schedule, they hope will ensure a completely normal calendar next season. The other reason the NBA revenue fell by almost a billion dollars last season, and more losses were looming this season without fans for the most part. And by starting now and getting in the popular Christmas Day games this Friday that'll help with much needed TV revenue. I have to ask you this, though I mean the category of it. It's not broken. Don't fix it. Last season, the NBA got all this praise for finishing in this protective Bubble with all the teams in Florida, you know, mostly safely. It seemed to work. Why wouldn't the league do that again? Yeah, absolutely. Was this success? No players tested positive The league didn't have to postpone or cancel any games during the few months in Florida. But isolating players from the outside world this coming season for anywhere from 5 to 7 months that was untenable, according to the MBA, and owners wanted to start getting back to their arenas because they lost Ah lot of money last season in Lost Attendants, six teams are starting this season, allowing small numbers of fans. The league is hoping with rollout of vaccines. Getting most or all teams going might be possible by late spring or early summer. I mean, a vaccine for everyone is months away. So isn't this a risk of the MBA? Well, sure, yeah. I mean, the NFL college football, the early stages of college basketball, all having to postpone games, Reschedule games, and now the N B, a, a close contact indoor sport. Teams playing several games each week traveling a lot, so it is a risk. And in yesterday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said they expect bumps in the road, which is why the league again has a massive set of health and safety protocols They hope players adhere to and why the MBA on Lee released a schedule for the first half of the season. Right now they want to stay. Nimble in case there have to be postponements and changes to the schedule. Okay, so they're acknowledging there had to be ready to pivot. Well, let's talk basketball. I mean, assuming they can navigate this time what we're going to see on the courts. Oh, man, So much great basketball. So many young emerging stars so little time to talk about. Luca Don Church. Devin Booker, Jamal Murray, Donovan Mitchell. John Marantz. Stop me, David. There are so many, but tonight's openers. We celebrate really good old guys. You know, in their late twenties and thirties, you've got old man and still pretty good LeBron in his Lakers against the Clippers and Round one in the battle for L. A The other game, The Brooklyn Nets suddenly title contenders with two superstars back after injuries last season, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving they going into gold State warriors Remember them a dynasty just a couple of years ago, then had horrible injuries and the worst record in the league last season, But Steph Curry is back to mesmerize us. So tonight of funds start to a season that MBA fans hope can last. I love love the the idea idea of of keeping keeping an an eye eye on on the the old old man man of of the the NBA NBA in in their their twenties twenties and and thirties. thirties. Tom, Tom, Thank Thank you you so so much. much. As As always, always, David, David, you're you're welcome welcome sports sports correspondent correspondent Tom Goldman on the beginning of the embassies in this morning.
