Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt Agrees to a 4-Year, $112 Million Extension

"Get news that a deal has been agreed to in principle. Not sign but agreed to between. T. j. watt and the pittsburgh steelers. This was first broken by ian rapoport of the nfl network was also adam schefter. Espn that they have the deal in principle. I think they just have to put pen to paper. But it's agreed moving forward. Here's the deal. It's a four year extension worth just over our right around just over one hundred and twelve million dollars for tj. What would this has him as the highest paid defensive player in football now you can manipulate the numbers one way or the other to say how much it is per year. We'll get there all right. It's basically he's just over twenty eight million dollars per year from that extension and there's also eighty million dollars fully guaranteed at signing. Now we'll get into that in just a second but first i want to understand that. This is an extension so this goes on top of the deal that he already had for this year which was playing under the fifth year option where he was set to make ten points. I'm going from memory. I'm pretty sure it's ten point. Oh eight nine million dollars this

"Can we say the bears would have been better off keeping mitchell trubisky. Can we or candy. I'm going to say we can. And just in general with all the decisions that ryan place makes. Starting left tackle eric fisher and right tackle jeff schwartz. These two are key players on this offensive line. We know that they didn't play in the super bowl. Obviously eric fisher tours achilles right before so he was unable to play in it and jeff fisher was really working hard. Excuse me jeff. Shorts was really working hard to come back and he said on instagram himself that he was going to be one hundred percent ready to go for this upcoming season. We talked last week all about this week. Being a really difficult week we called it. A massacre at least one coach told me that. And that's what it is. Look at what. The Cowboys did not Jack Prescott did Jack press cop Doc Prescott. His family did. But this is a big time swing and miss for the Cowboys. I think that they took a calculated risk. You know, they tried to be patient and patient and patient and didn't want to do something like the Rams and the Eagles did. But man, that is a ton of money to give that Prescott What should the expectation Level B for cowboy fans this year? This year. It Luis, You're stuck in second round of the playoffs. Sniffing your NFC championship game, You know, like here's Here's. This is what my comment is with this, and it's the old saying too much is given much is expected. This is why I was very cautious of giving Dak Prescott a ton of money or second most quarterback money. It's going to impact your football team and we can't snow sit here and say, Well, he's really good. But the expectation status, saying the expectations have to be elevated. Not only individually Hey, what are left tackles out. We still have to win the game on the road against the New York Jets because they stink or when we don't have a Mark Cooper. We still got to play good at the position because you're supposed to be And a difference maker. When it comes to the finances. It's a bad division. Dallas Cowboys Reach Multi-Year Deal With Star Quarterback Dak Prescott

"Salary cabin number for two thousand and twenty one is going to be twenty two point two million dollars all right now. Head dak prescott. In franchise tag again this will happen in a procedural sense but had to cow tried to go at this with dak prescott on the franchise tag for the two thousand and twenty one season. We've talked about this a number of times. That value would have been thirty. Seven point seven million dollars so the fact that the cow is now have him onto the books. We're talking about the value that is on the books in the books. However you want to look at the books whether they're e books or physical books whatever the case may be that value is now twenty two point two million dollars now. I know that we have all said some things about the dallas cowboys but they are not complete dummies. They surely budgeted for the franchise tag value. Because let's be honest. They came about twenty four hours. We think you know. Close to having the actually placed the franchise tag and maybe carried out with that prescott. So the cowboys have room for the franchise tag at the very least so you look at that quake matt that adam schefter was kind enough to do for you. That is fifteen point. Five million dollars that the dallas cowboys suddenly have because they've got this long term deal with that prescott. This is something that we've been saying for two years now. If you do this you can. You can kick this down the road. You can prorate it you can extended you can whatever term you want to put on it. You can spread the impact of the deal out of the signing bonus of the overall guaranteed money out over the lives of the contract so it doesn't hit you all at once. That's the one killer about the franchise tag is that it is fully and completely guaranteed in franchise tag is a one year deal so the value of it last year and dak prescott was on the tag for thirty one point. Four million dollars. The two thousand twenty dallas cowboys had to absorb that value all at once and they would have had to have done it again. Here in two thousand and twenty one but because they have adjusted that they now have fifteen and a half million dollars that they were seemingly budgeting for dak prescott that now they can apply to different areas. Maybe it is a safety. Maybe it's a defensive end. Maybe it's a defensive tackle. Maybe it's you know an offensive tackle. But they want swing tackled death whatever the case may be. We know that the cowboys obviously hold the tenth overall. Pick in the draft. They could go a number of different directions there. They wanna cornerback kayla farther patrick's retain do wanna take one of the tackles and rashawn slater as all this is. This is setting up and this is an important thing. I want you to hear me here and watch me here. You cannot waste this money. If dallas cowboys the whole point and getting this done with thac prescott besides obviously establishing having the best player on your team for the foreseeable future the point in doing this is to alleviate the salary cap space now. And i don't like the term when now if you watch us often you know that but you look state of the nfc east. It is by sudha. I mean the philadelphia. Eagles are a disaster. The new york giants doping daniel jones is legitimate. The washington football team has a great team but is void of the most important position of the game and a quarterback. Maybe they'd get somebody this cycle as we all expect quarterbacks to change teams at a higher rate than usual but the case in point is at the dallas cowboys are now. We're going to see this all day on tuesday by the way and we'll talk about it of course but they're going to be overwhelming favorites to win the nfc streit and you think about the conference that they plan is really a contender in the nfc. And i mean that with all due respect to the reigning champion tampa bay buccaneers. But you've got the bucks you've got the green bay packers and then who scares you. May maybe the rams you believe in matthew stafford but the point is thinking about the afc. I mean the. Afc has the bills and the ravens and the chiefs and the titans and the steelers and the browns. I mean you could go. A number of different ways. Did the colts have carson. Wentz ends up getting his act together and so the cowboys play in the weakest division in the weaker conference and so now they have this opportunity to really kind of take their future in the here and now they have fifteen and a half million dollars that they weren't necessarily planning on having use it and if they don't use it it is all for not so i mean we are all imploring the dallas cowboys to ultimately use this salary cap space. This is a very very very luxurious gift. That they now have been afforded that they didn't previously have so shattered of course to the dallas cowboys. Let's see here let's move. I'm i wanna talk of course about the bonus the dak prescott because well. It's stupid large. I mean it's amazing. Dak prescott has now the largest signing bonus in the nfl. You look at joe flacco. Once upon a time. Got forty million. Dollars matt ryan forty six and a half. Remember if you're on the fence about this value. We've talked about this before as well. Matt ryan became the first quarterback in nfl history to average over. He had thirty but to average at least thirty million dollars per year with his new contract that he signed with the atlanta falcons in two thousand and eighteen. That was three years ago. Dak prescott signed a four six year. Deal whatever you wanna call it. That was three years ago. They matt ryan signed that he was the first quarterback to hit the thirty million dollars a year. Mark prescott just hit forty but the reality and we've been saying this forever is that there are so many deals coming around the bend. Josh allens gotta get paid. Lamar jackson's gotta get paid. Baker mayfield's got to get paid extra calories. He's going to get paid the year after that. It's going to be time for joe burrow to finally get paid and when all of those players get paid this forty million dollars a year. Mark the dak prescott got this one hundred twenty six million dollar. Total guaranteed is sixty six million dollar signing bonus all these things that are currently the top of the nfl. The most in nfl history. That's the verbiage in determining that you're hearing associated with this and it's all literally true but it's all going to get pushed down because all of these players on this list. Joe flacco matt ryan matthew stafford at fifty million signing bonus. Aaron rodgers fifty. Seven and a half russell wilson not going to be a dallas cowboy now by the way sixty five million dollars. Dak prescott topped that all of these quarterbacks in all likelihood we'll top that that's the reality of the nfl things are always moving in one direction. It is up

Weren't silly you know you kinda can engage it off of what time of the year it is with. What's going gonna get everything a little bit closer closer. North bennett is down. Washington releases Alex Smith following quarterback's Comeback Player of the Year season

"Quickly. I have some news that has just come in from adam. Schefters twitter feed. And it's not a surprise but the washington football team has released alex smith. Who was this year's choice for the nfl's comeback player of the year overwhelmingly. So he has been released. They save almost fifteen million dollars cap space so in an off season. Where does shawn watson might be available. Dak prescott might be available. Russell wilson might be available louis. How interested do you think teams will be alex smith as he becomes available now. I think alex is a tremendous mentor. I think alex would be a tremendous bridge quarterback at this point in time these people are going to really try and connect the dots between him in chicago given his familiarity with matt nagy and that system that they run in chicago like it was in kansas city. I don't think that's a that's the option that they're looking for but look. I have nothing but infinite. Respect for alex smith at any team would be better served having him in their in their quarterback room for sure.

Bill Barnwell Breaks Down NFL Quarterback Moves

"So bill. We gave you do the math a whole month away from this podcast before our dependency bio chemically kicked back in so i just hope the last four weeks have been everything that you personally needed. Pablo got on many vacations. I turned around my life after six months of just staying watching football now. Bill barn wells weekly column on. Espn plus and he hosts the bill. Barnwell show podcast realistically. I have done something that few human beings have accomplished. I managed to get one pack of moments from nba. top shot. yeah. We share that same addiction. You are far deeper into the game than me. I realized over the weekend. I just want there to be an nfl top shot. Because i feel like that's going to happen right. It has to. i mean. Imagine the things you could do. You could send somebody that colts fake punt from years ago or or if you wanted to try some of your friends. Perhaps you could send the russell wilson interception from the nfl top shot to a certain person with the initials m used to host the show. Yeah just randomly picking in that example in those initials absolutely but bill. We dragged you back here. Speaking of a certain quarterback who threw a certain interception emotionally terrorized ours. Because this is an especially dramatic. Nfl offseason. they're all these big name. Quarterbacks who want out of these relationships that seemed from a distance at least pretty broken and russell wilson and the seahawks. I need to ask you about that. I because i know russ isn't feeling respected by head coach. Pete carroll reporting. I know that carol wants to revoke all of his cooking privileges. We've heard now. Russell wilson like storming out of meetings which is kind of funny to imagine like door very lightly slamming so this particular soap opera. What is all of it. Feel like to you much ado about nothing really. I mean i just i. Just don't buy russell wilson drama. I go back to his contract. Negotiations this is the same player in the same agent. Who wants imply that he would leave football in the middle of these negotiations entering the final year of his deal to try professional baseball. Where russell wilson once for the iraqis and the organization he hit to twenty eight in the low minors before returning to college football. It was not a realistic threat. But if that way does he want the seahawks to give him more helpful on the offensive line which has been sort of the crux of his public complaints. Yeah i do believe that. And i think that the seahawks could benefit from giving him more help. They relied on russell wilson to run his way out of sacks and free pressures from unblock players which has worked for that stretch buddies also taken a ton of hits cuss russell. Wilson plays the way he plays. He is going to take a ton of sacks regardless of how good his protection is the best way honestly pablo to get him. Hitless frequently would be to run the ball more. Which is the exact thing. Russell wilson was trying to get the seahawks do lasso last offseason. So there is something here but i very much doubt that leads to a trade. My favorite thing about this new cycle i think is that russell wilson has relayed via his wrapped. Adam schefter that he is not demanding a trade but if he were there are these four specific teams that he'd like to go to the bears. The cowboys the saints. The raiders does any of that make sense to you know not at all i mean the classic russell wilson tropez that ciara was going to pick teams him in new york in los angeles which this is the opposite that list even the teams he chose are so strange. Maybe you'd argue that. He chose teams with great offensive. Lions triumph of the seahawks. But the trade doesn't really add up the same. Stu have agreed offensive line. But they're like sixty five million dollars over the salary cap. The cowboys have a great line. Whenever everyone's healthy but they also have back prescott. that's not gonna work either the bears. I don't understand. They don't have a great line or any cap space. That one makes no sense to me on either. Level the raiders. Maybe are the most interesting and plausible candidate of the bunch with a great line and some cap space to work with. But when i think about jon. Gruden as raiders coach. He wants quarterbacks to do exactly what jon gruden wants on every single play. I don't think any if it really adds up to meaningful trae dialogue. I don't think there's going to be a conversation between the seahawks and another team about trying to make a trade for russell wilson work but this is twenty twenty one anything is possible

Houston Texans president Jamey Rootes resigning after 20 years with franchise

"Lot of focus on what's been going on in Houston this off season. Wednesday. We learned team President James Roots, resigns ESPN Insider Adam Schefter today their president, Jamie Roots, resigned, effective immediately, and I think any time there's any news with the Houston Texans People want to know. How does this impact or read out with two Shaun watching, and I think the issue here is that there are people in that organization in and around the league who have questions about the direction of that franchise. Jamie Roots clearly was one of them. He was a part of the search process that basically blacked him out. Discounted and ignored the words of the search firm that the organization paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for and in the end, when with Nicolas Ariel, who obviously is a qualified candidate, no issue with Nick Osario, it's the way the organization ran the search and ultimately moved in the end. I think Jamie roots is uncomfortable with that he was uncomfortable with the direction of the franchise. Ultimately, after 20 years with the organization in which he made all their big business decisions, he decided to resign from his post, which I think is a reflection off the way that some people in that organization and some people around the league view that spot right now,

Carson Wentz would prefer to leave Philadelphia Eagles, but team is not looking to trade him, per report

"This is the saga that we've been covering forever right carson. Wentz coming off terrible year. You know that he got benched. You'll see all the numbers and it was just awful but when they made the choice to fire the coach and bring in frank. Reich's assistant nick serianni. We figured well at the end of that is coming back in philly. Adam schefter yesterday said maybe not so fast wants. Leave the franchise. That's why the trade still employ. This is a real and this was made up and just because he would like to be moved doesn't mean he will be if i had to guess i would guess he is traded. That'd be my guess. Okay at some point this off season but again. they're not just going to train them just. They're not looking to get rid of him. They're not shefty. I shefty speech. The world listens and dan. Orlovsky we've not had you on this yet today. What is your reaction to this idea that it seems at least from the outside like the eagles have probably done just about everything he might have wanted and he still wants out agree with them. Schefter i think carson wentz wants away from philadelphia for a long time. People thought well he wants away. From doug peterson i think he wants to wait from the city. I think he wants away. From the organization. Greenie do speak so loudly. I need not hear what you say. And we live in a time frame and society where it's the easiest time ever to make some form of statement and carson had two opportunities to do that his first head coach in the. Nfl was fired. He had the opportunity to post something on twitter. Post something on instagram. Saying you're my. I said coach ever in the nfl while it didn't work out the way we wanted to for the long run. I'm forever thankful for our time together. Well then we move on and they hire a head coach. Nick serianni another opportunity to make some form of statement some form of. I'm looking forward to the future. New new beginnings fresh start excited to work with you and nothing for those two reasons. I'm sitting back and going carson. Wentz doesn't want to be in philadelphia. Maybe it wasn't as tight to doug peterson and it is tied to the organization and what has transpired over the past couple of weeks past couple of months. I can tell you this. I had a coach call me last week and spend twenty minutes on the phone with me asking about what my thoughts were with carson. Wentz the good and the bad why. It went south this past season because they've got a high level of interest in them and i think two teams. That should be calling our indy in chicago. Both of them have a win. Now defenses and both of them have some form of a tie in the past with carson wentz being frank reich and indian john d. filipo in chicago so i agree with this Shefty i think it's more likely. He gets traded than not.

Are Raiders plotting to trade Derek Carr, pursue Deshaun Watson?

"According to a report out of las vegas. The raiders are taking calls on quarterback derek. Carr it's suggested in the report that it could potentially be the beginning of a three team trade to get to shawn watson in a raiders. Uniform shannon vegas. Try and trade for sean top. Five top seven quarterback. I think you should be in the running for watson. Skip there something that's been on my mind and the bother me last week. I called you the night before and told you that has some information about about jon. L. came on the show and they're about six thirty top of the show. I said to shawn watson my sources tell me shawn watson has ashby the texans for trade and this is not. This is just being broke but this could ask a couple of weeks ago now. Adam schefter reported twenty minutes out to me that show watson to ask for trade basically saying that he's breaking the news which at and i said what transpired that he wants to go to the jets. He have a fondness for robert solid. Everybody keeps saying jason this and that so what they're trying to do. They're trying to add egg pool pork to a hamburger. That i've already made is still a hamburger. Youth and economists tried to add to the story back to this absolutely skilled. I don't this report came from chris. Simms yes okay. What transpired skill. And you said this yesterday. When he was when he was talking to the press conference the player he said the player of the the new england syria away to new caserio said the player yes he must have realized how it sounded his head because he started saying shaw desha. It's too late. You everything off his thing and our to our for everything to my agent day google level but anyway skill yes they should skip. I just got always got the impression. That jon gruden wasn't as far the derek carr. I don't know what it is. I could be totally wrong but it. Just something about yeah. He's good but i don't really know if he can take me to where i need to go. I am making ten million dollars. The i do have one hundred dollar contract. And we haven't been to the play. So i'm as you can be viewed as a failure skill for thirty million dollars ain't got nothing to show for it. And there's a lot of have to do with his defense. They print his lands. Twenty fourth and thirtieth last three years are good bradley the off season he so you look at it. They're waller. it's a top three tight end. They got josh jacobs. Who made the pro bowl again. If i'm not mistaken hillary rodham. He nice receiving corps offensive. Line is solid. Yeah john was. It will be a major player for them. And in this offense again. It's the west coast system skip. It'd be foolish not to try

Chiefs place Robinson, Kilgore on COVID-19 list

"This coming down. Just moments ago. Adam schefter saying the chiefs placing center daniel kilgore and wide receiver demarcus robinson on the reserve covid nineteen list due to close contact. You see diana receive their. She's been covering the chiefs all week long diana. They didn't address this. Kobe news because it came up right at the end of media day. But you were talking to all of them throughout so tell us what you learned. Yeah well. I gotta give a lot of credit to this. Kansas city chiefs team who are in kansas city missouri. Twelve hundred miles away from where the super bowl action is all going down starting today and these guys were having a lot of fun they were bringing the energy this virtual so it's very hard to have a lot of energy and to have fun but they did a really good job laura. Let's start with the most important thing i learned. And that's andy. Reid is going to have a double cheeseburger waiting for him at the end of the game. If they win if you remember he had one last year. That was the meal he ate after. They want kidding. That's not the most important thing but something that did stand out with. Patrick mahomes was talking about. When tom brady met up with him after the afc championship game. Two years ago remember the chiefs lost at arrowhead and our jeff jolly was actually down on the ground and he was the one who spotted this. He saw tom. Brady walk over to a security guard and asked to talk to. Patrick mahomes the security guard. A little surprise like okay. I'll figure it out for you. Well he was able to find him a little room in the equipment room. And that's when they brought patrick in radiant ham had a conversation. Take a listen to what patrick learned about it for me. I think it was important because it showed that. I was doing things the right way as a young quarterback in this leading You you gotta go in he or early trying to put it in the time and the work But you don't really know until you get to that that that spot of where you wanna be at Losing an afc championship game. Obviously i didn't get to the super bowl. But then him tell me anything kind of just just saying that he respected what i was doing and how i was planning filming the type of person that i was A kind of best on me to go any new better In order to get the super bowl which we did last year. And i'll just trying to keep improving and keep getting better every single day. We asked andy read about it. He said he didn't enter. Didn't see the conversation. But he said he heard about and he was obviously very grateful. That brady took that time to talk to his young quarterback but re did make a point With the reporters today to say that they are so happy. There in missouri no distractions very few media obligations. It's all football. Football football are

Matthew Stafford Blockbuster: Will the Rams Massive Gamble Pay Off?

"Bill barn. While i am sorry. I off retold you on friday explicitly. You'd have this rare sunday off from your job making a smarter about football. But just when you think you're out espn daily always pulls you back in pablo. I was ready to record at one in the morning to talk about the madden pro bowl. So this is slightly more newsworthy. So happy at least we have more something something more compelling perhaps talk about here with matthew stafford trade bill barnwell is a senior writer for espn and the host of the bill barnwell show podcast compelling but also kind of the closest thing football gets to a video game transaction. Two starting quarterbacks getting swamped. We have matt stafford. Go into the rams jared goff plus two future first rounders and third rounder. This year headed lions. So when you got the adam. Schefter claxton on your phone saturday night. Your first reaction was what. What my first reaction i would say that the rams really hate traffics and want to get rid of them quickly and efficiently as possible and then my second thought was that the rams really were done with jared goff and wanted to move on from him and weren't going let anybody beat them to the punch with an offer. We knew that a deal was coming this week because there were reports on saturday that the lions were expecting to get a deal done by tuesday which is essentially when it comes to the nfl their way of saying. Hey get your best offers end because we're gonna make this deal sooner rather than later We knew the rams are questioning their commitment to. We talked about it over the past couple weeks on. espn daily. Even though his four year one hundred thirty four million dollar extension has not started yet. And then on top of all that brad homes the new general manager with the lions just like the rams after i believe eight years as their director of college scouting under less need. It was the other. Gm who made this trade so put all that together and the rams made the most sense as a possible destination for stafford but the fact that the deal was announced late on a saturday night probably tells you that the rams were not especially proud of how all this went down. Just given up on the quarterback they have been propping up and defending public years while giving up two extra first rounders justice upgrade under center

"Now it's time for the mail bag, which is brought to you by T so t so the official watch of the NBA shop. Whoa. Showed up there and a lot of people system. Nice things about him doing that with the NFL watch come on selling nobody's calling me to make any watch appearances. Okay. So as always if you guys leave a review on the I tunes page for the meantime show, you should also leave nice reviews for the Adam Schefter podcasts, we will answer the I will ask the question. I can't speak Adam Schefter, as to be nice squad team six. Adam asks, should I keep my saints season tickets after next season? Or do you see them to gliding? Okay. So we. The saints. I think he's joking. But let me let me put it this way. I actually when I did my NFC south preview. I you know, the saints are still the favorite, but to me that was another division where I felt like it was three and one where I felt like the falcons in especially the Panthers I was surprised to feel realize how much are like them after going specially some of the dishes, they made on defense my one concern about the saints. And this is what I'm gonna ask you is. Drew Brees his splits. When you looked at the end of last year, there are some. Well, me say this to you, first of all, if drew Brees is your biggest issue, then your team is in good shape saying that the splits are there and the numbers are what they are. And and, and he has not been prime drew Brees. He's been good drew Brees, which is good enough in many cases in good. Drew Brees is better than most quarterbacks anyway. But I think there is there has been a little bit of a drop off. But the good thing is he's so smart and capable. He knows what he can and can't do and Sean Payton and peace core. Michael, nobody can and can't do and they have all these other weapons that they figured out a way around it. Okay. So sure we dumped the bold Alvin, Kamara we throw the ball to Jared cook at tight end our new tight end. We throw it to Michael Thomas trae, Kwan Smith deep like you mix it up enough. You're not gonna put him in bad spots and the numbers. Yes, they do. Raise the question and get you to go. Drew Brees is your biggest concern. We're talking about the lions. And so the questions and they're writing the Packers drew Brees. Okay. We're real concerned to be from, like a top three quarterback to like a top ten point. Right. So, and yes, given all the other pieces, given the improvements on defense I'm not worried about the saints at all. I did question there another team similar to the Packers Adam where I thought the might add another wide receiver they went on to Jared cook. Instead, who I think's gonna be phenomenal in that offense? But, you know, I it's a lot sometimes to ask if Micheal Thomas. That's all who's about to become very rich. Right. So I think that they'll get that deal, if you're Michael Thomas, and you know that you're gonna get let's just say twenty two million dollars a year..

"And like you're not allowed to meet with you new players yet, even though you take over as head coach because the rules of the current boring Remo, yet you have met her in Rogers. Yeah. We, we actually met once before. I said, when was that, and I guess it was some sort of party that Matt leflore was at an LA in Iran and Attaran Rogers, and they and they had a beer together way back when before Matt leflore came out of floor and Roger Zan Rogers by then. And so these guys now get to reacquaint themselves and, and that that will help define how this Green Bay season goes, and Matt leflore comes in with some strong credentials and running head ino- in offense, and it will be imperative for him and that quarterback to get along. But again, I think Roger's vested in this because everybody knew that it seemed like the Packers want to do their own thing. Aaron Rodgers want to go his own way he got what he wanted. And so here it is. He gets new coach. He gets out -fensive my the coach who's got the history that he does that you referred to. The run a lot of bootleg a lot of play action all the stuff. You see from the Rams from the forty Niners, those sorts of offenses and, and if this offense functions like that, then Aras should be able to thrive. And you would think very happy, but again, we're going to bisect and dissect their relationship every single. Yeah he has the by. And by the way, so adamant he had Matt leflore on his podcast, the Adam Schefter podcast, which gushes described to have a dog on my podcast, so we're kinda into different dogs in my house meeting. How about that maybe like to have they'd like to be on your podcast. My wife would like to have more dogs unless I think. I can relate, I want. So busy did have I kind of want to stay on ask you because I I'm trying to figure out where we're going to give from him. You know, I mentioned obviously he comes from he's studied at the knee, someone's young as Sean McVeigh. Can you really study at his name, but he study at the what? He studied more than knee of Mike Shanahan Shanahan guy and it shows, right? Because in Tennessee, and this is what I wanna ask you about. So in Tennessee we saw. It's very different from Green Bay Green Bay ran a ton of eleven sixty five percent of time via shark football stats. They ran eleven. Leflore forty four percent of the time. And it's the three receivers guy. So they as a lot of twelve it's a lot of twenty two it's a lot of heavier sets out a mention it's a lot of play action. It's a lot of boot like I like all those things at him but the Tennessee offense was not successful. Now, you could say, well, look at to work with their so that's what I want to ask you, like I conceptually, I really like what leflore brings to the table. It's very modern. It's what all the good, many of the good offense in the NFL doing, but his track record in Tennessee was not great. So given those two things are you optimistic about what he can do with Rogers Lewis should I am? I think the metal floors got strong credentials. I still think though you do wanna see him go in and do it. And he hasn't done it as a head coach shit. Right. So I mean every single year the league hires about seven new coaches per year on average, and it's been that way for decades and so every single one of them thinks that they're hitting a home run. And maybe one or two or three. Do. And so more often than not these teams miss on their hires..

There have been very few people in the history of covering that sport who do it as well. And his informed as that guy does. So, of course, we don't ask him anything about that sport. We asked him basketball questions, 'cause he's also a basketball insiders, seventy six four five six eight three seven Mike. Do we have an intro? Do we have that pressurize music? But Webb, I think, with the original pioneer in that area, and is good as muggy Bogues was, I'm gonna go a Spud Webb, David, you're on with Adam Schefter. Go ahead. "Could slide. I mean, they could side into the twenties very easily. And I think you go back to the point make about this this draft in general, the depth of the position is better. We like, the keel Harry from Arizona say heck of a player, but he's a second round pick you Smith Schuster, Michael Thomas one and on remember year. When all his second rounders went Allen Robinson company turned out, pretty good. I like the second round when you look at even into the fifth round. Penny heart, Georgia state. I like Andy Isabella UMass to slot guys that can play. I mean Amador was a good player. It's gonna play fast any Isabella's fast. It's got returns. Because look what he did against teams. You like penny heart shorts state. I think plays into the fact if you're sitting there on the board, and I don't know your Oakland. Let's say twenty four and you're saying, you know, what I could take wide receiver here now. But I also take advantage of the depth of this defensive line class, get an edge rusher. And then go get a receiver in the second round. Because I really liked the value. What I'm getting on the second round versus kind of feeling like I'm reaching for a player here. Now, the is become such a huge deal. I don't know if you know this. I'm gonna let you in secret here. Okay. In my thirty years in the business. I've never won a Pulitzer. An EMMY I've never won very many awards, but I will say that one of the most emotionally touching moments of my career came. In the most unexpected ways, and it meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. But when it happened it was kind of a cool honor. And that was when Peyton Manning retired from the Denver Broncos, the NFL and said this wait before Super Bowl our daughter Moseley asked me daddy. Is this the last game? Yes Moseley is the last game of the season. I sure do want you to win that trophy. To moseley. And that's what we're going to try to do then she asked daddy is this the last game ever? When I shook my head in amazement because I was thinking Morton Adam Schefter had gotten to my five year old daughter to cultivate. When I heard that. I was I was I was blown away. So I bring that up because this. ESPN announced this week that's launching a new series with Peyton Manning going around to fifty great football spots. The most stork plays people in the game. And one of his episodes Todd is on milk, hyper and all refugees. Wow. No that. No, no, you you had mentioned that you talk to them over the summer. I think it was that was in fall in the fall. It was actually a winter and fall winter what how how did this? Because basically, I'm reading releases weak and it saying that paintings going to go back and relive the immaculate reception. With Franko Harrison, Terry Bradshaw, he's gonna go to flak jacket with Dan Pastorino. He's all that stuff. He's going to go to spend time with the forty Niners and really catch. And he's going to spend time in milk, hyper office on all his draft books. Unbelievable. Believe was happening to call back in August, say the summer saying Peyton Manning wants to come to your house that compound. Keiper compo everybody at Todd has a standing ovation standing by time. You get on the eastern shore can come by whatever. But okay standing he came. Well, what happens is call that? They're bringing breakfast in at five thirty AM that everybody. My daughter comes over night before you know, she's going to be there going to be there boyfriend, Alex. He's coming. Everybody's coming. Not to watch me. We'll watch pate make. Enough you pay exactly weight too much. So Peyton Peyton is. Like you talk about coming in. They had people that were specifically there to move furniture only. Yeah. So I'm one that doesn't like a thing move in my office. I can see a thing is move. I know it's moved at Tim dust. Too much. I know she moves something and move. I know it. Well, Alex knows LARs boyfriend. Maybe futures. And we'll say, hopefully, hopefully, I think when you look at this whole thing, I come down and steps paintings narrowed, eight o'clock AM, they're been setting up since five thirty. Okay. I come walking around to the steps and Alex standing downstairs. I looked down. He's got this smile. Mcshea has someone like you're you're black..

"On this week's special bonus addition of the Adam Schefter podcast, we sit down with the Baltimore Ravens. Hey, coach John Harbaugh whose team has endured a tumultuous off season as well as the Houston Texans. Ed coach Bill O'Brien whose team is suffered some losses of its own. But I the ravens head coach John Arba quite an off season for the Baltimore Ravens. I did not expect to see that much turnover. I have to say did it surprise you. How much your defense in particular has turned over the thing? Adam that you learn after many years is that never be shocked by being shocked by what happens at because you never know. You know, you never know who's going to get paid or or who's going to decide they want to go somewhere else, or you're gonna have an opportunity to bring in you know, it's just crazy that way, and it was that way for us this year. Look, no, Terrell suggs knows Daria Smith. No, CJ Moseley. No, Eric Weddell. How many those guys did you think had a chance to come back? Why didn't think we'd lose Terrell? Suggs, you know, that's the biggest thing in Quetta was was the decision that was made by the club for cap reasons. You know, so a love both those guys and they're not here. And that's just moving forward. How about CJ Moseley that was was going to be tough maybe to keep it just depends on free agents. He's a great player, you know. And there's there are a lot of guys that a lot of cap space, and and whatever the number you think is right or wrong. It really doesn't matter. It's what he's able to get you can't blame CJ for for taking care of his family way, did, but we just didn't have the kind of cap opportunity that jets, and we talked about this where it seemed like Ray Lewis past that defensive mantle leadership to Edry who passed it to Terrell suggs. And I thought she g motza who gets does it Thomas your new safety takeover. They will have a mantle, you know, the Manto is not something that we have in our building anywhere. So I like show me the man. Leader, John who's the defensive leader whoever Burgess, you know. And it's it's that that's the great thing about it. I mean leadership is not something that's bestowed on anybody. You can't pass a mantle onto it. So they have to earn it. And I think all those guys over the years of the guys that took that on earned it, and we're respected for the reasons they were respected and a yo certainly do that in the in the jets, and and somebody has some number of guys will do that for us. We have a lot of great leaders. I mean, Tony Jefferson jumps into my head is a guy that leads, by example, and works hard. And I think we have a lot of guys like that. What is your Thomas going to bring to the defense? He's not bringing a mantle. He's he's. But he does. This guy he roams afield e we all know what kind of player, so he brings all that to us. I was excited to get him thrilled to get him. Eric went brought so much to us. I mean, I love Eric what I love his family. Love the way played. He allowed us to play defensive certain way last year. We were able to do some things on the field that other teams are not able to do we were smart enough to understand how to build a system that allows a guy like that to thrive and we're going to build on that system. And we think Earl can thrive in that system to in his way. And I think he's smart and tough and you'll figure out how to make adjustments for. So we'll Tony other guys will have to take that mantle on and make those kinds of judgments force in real time. But hey, Earl Thomas is a different player than Eric. Well, so he'll do it his way. And we all know what that way is. And I'm looking forward to seeing it on the offensive side of the football. How did you see the development of Lamar Jackson over the course of his rookie year? And what do you expect me to sake near perfecting a big jump?.

And when we realized that we had a chance to get that for something that we definitely didn't expect we got excited, but you know, I think it was a little bit more of a tease, and which you know, we went through a little bit because we didn't plan to be in it, and then we got close. And so we got someone excited a little disappointed when it didn't work out. But when we ended up with heaven the next day that ended very faster us. So I was very pumped ended up with tavern. And yeah, we definitely looked into though del thing John I've been working on that for a few months trying to see if something can happen. And I just didn't think we had the stuff on that they wanted and it didn't work out. And you know, he's always a great player. I don't know how much I can talk about him. He's on another team. "Almost has anybody told him that you can't get the hall of fame until you. Retire that they won't let you do that. So. I think somebody should call them and educate them and say, listen, it's five years from when you retire. And so he might want to start doing that. You wanna be able to have your kids at home and all that good stuff. You don't want him to be on. So, but no in all seriousness. Tom is a heck of a player, and he's the gold standard as coach Belichick and a new one. I took this job that this that was going to be a tough task. And but we're trying to build something here that can can overtake them at some point. We're obviously not there yet, but we hope to to find ourselves competing with him and eventually taken over the AFC east and a way to begin to compete with them. Again. We'll be the draft next month. What would you say in a general sense going in the Buffalo Bills are looking to accomplish in next month's draft? Well, we're just looking at honestly, very good football players. And that was the key to free agency. We did at a lot of pieces. I hope I don't have to sign that many guys going forward. But it takes time. There's only you can only have that draft once a year, and you only got so many picks. So adding another draft class here of guys that are good players. We don't have a major hole that we could roll the ball out. Now right now and start a game and play are there some positions that are little weaker than others. Yes. But the main thing was not going in the draft with a glaring hole that you gotta take this exposition in the first couple rounds, or you're you're really going to be you know, you know, in a tough spot. See that's a great day. You could have been a sports reporter. But now you get to run the war room do the draft. And I can't imagine there'd be anything better than getting to do that any year. Not. So it's a lot of fun. It truly is. It's in the personnel world. It's our Super Bowl and our guys. I look at it as a whole group of scouts coming together. And getting we call it our board. It's not my board. You know, it's our board and everybody has a voice and as long as we get it right for the bills. Everything will be good Brennan, good luck with your board and the upcoming draft. "Hall Romeo Robinson made the free throws. And the fact that your college could win the national championship in basketball in the final month that you're at school. It doesn't get much better than that. I say that I mean getting married and having kids that that obviously stands out on lice milestones. Put but winning a national championship in your senior year as a die hard sports fan is also right there and as much fun as ever had on back to back weekends in my entire life. What a basketball talk on today's. Talk today. Josh. And now about to go hop on a flight here to go to Minnesota to do the rockets and timber basketball. There you go there you're going to remind people where they can see that again Wednesday night ESPN eight fifteen eastern Moore Jones on the cold. You're going to Minnesota where keeping the Great Lakes theme alive. And yes, I know that last call was from Texas, but it was about Michigan. So work with me there. I think I think we kept the Great Lakes theme going. We we span the globe today because we did spend the globe. And we will keep our ask Adam voicemail inbox open for next week's show. "My pleasure at me back. At a mosque scout scout. We should ask Adam. And we always welcome your ask Adam questions another edition of ask Adam on this week's Adam Schefter podcast. And Josh, what are you round up this week rounded up some good voicemails, Adam? But let me tell you the phone lines were burning up into Great Lakes region. A lot of calls from the mid west as you could hope that means I know what that means. What does it mean at them? Lots of Kareem hunt questions. Yes. In the first one. We of course, talked about Kareem hunt to lead off the podcast, but one Cleveland Browns fan wants to take it to the next level. Let's see where this one goes. Hey, you doing Adam Darren Ashley longtime fan Cleveland, Ohio. Just went to ask with the Browns new signing of Kareem hunt. Does that make us the best team in the AFC? Well, thanks for the question. Darren I appreciate it. Let's keep in mind that hunts can have a lengthy suspension coming, and I would guess that when the NFL hands it down that's going to be ten twelve games somewhere. In that vicinity. So the chances are he's not even going to be a factor for a good part of the two thousand nineteen season saying that the Browns are on the upswing, they have accumulated a lot of good young talent. It's a team that is on the rise. I'm not ready to say they're the best team in the AFC. Not when Tom Brady and Bill Belichick still reside in that conference. We never ever say that anybody's ever better than the patriots as long as Brady and Belichick around but the browser headed in the right direction. And if you're a Cleveland Browns fan Darren that's all you can ask at this point in time. They're headed in the right direction adamant and no disrespect, but they were seven and nine last year. I mean, not only the patriots. But what about the chiefs? What about even the colts the Texans? The chargers what about your own division? Steelers ravens? And I think a lot of people especially with the Steelers might think that that Pittsburgh is on the downswing and Cleveland on the upswing. I'll give you that. But man, I don't care if the Browns had Jim Brown in the backfield, much less Kareem hunt. I don't think they're the best team. In the AFC. I mean, what do you think there are a playoff team next year?.

"S? Chad should have to how you doing? I'm good. How are you? You know, watching the TV Sunday night. And once again, I see the ravens vice president of public relations front and center in the center of the football universe again. And I said we have to get Chad on this week's Adam Schefter podcast. He must be on honored. Well, I mean, it's incredible. What has happened for those of you who are now listening basically CHAD'S job during the year is to work with the Baltimore Ravens? But Super Bowl week. He becomes the media liaison for are you signed to a player or a team. Fair. So during the week there are a number of us that are there to help league out with credentialing radio row know kinda point media in the right direction opening night that Monday night were assigned to a player. I had Tom Brady on Monday night. And then we're time to a player after the which again I had Brady. So it's it's it's flit up between between people. I just so happened to have I think is, sir. Certified time I've had Tom when when they've been in there. So we're we're we're kind of developing a little bond and you had Tom three or four times yet Peyton Manning after the Broncos won the Super Bowl Ray Lewis after the ravens won the Super Bowl. It seems like you always have the star attraction. How does that happen? You know, I don't know where they're like. I said they invite a few of us down kind of some of the heads of department from around the league to help out all week. And then we have some young kids some interns that are looking for jobs, and some some younger systems coordinators that are that are looking to expand the horizons a little bit and down there for the week. And then we just we get the game assignments. And I think the first one that I had when I worked at Super Bowl outside of of the ravens when was was Russell Wilson in in New Jersey a few years ago. And you know, I got a quarterback. I think maybe my side helps you know, that I'm a bigger guy, and I can get out there and kinda kinda move the people through but just ever since. Then I've I've had quarterbacks I think I think six along right now, the only the only loss at what I had I had cast year when the when the eagles beat them, but I pretty decent record. So there you are on Sunday night. The patriots win the Super Bowl. Tom Brady is stormed by the media, Tracy Rolston of CBS is trying to get in to get that interview from your perspective. And you were the only one that appeared in that show with Tracy in Tom, it was Tracy Wilson, Tom Brady, and Chad steal. What was that scrum? Like for you. You know, I it's just it's interesting because Tom pulled in a hundred directions, and you know, we're talk to CBS CBS wanted to try to get the interview pretty quickly. But as soon as you're out there, you're Tom celebrating a little bit than teammates coming up, then have coaches coming up, and he wants to make sure he's very good about making sure he gives respect to the to the opposing team. So they wanna make sure saw Jared golf, and there were a couple of other players that want to see and it's kinda hey, Tom over here can Tom over here. And we're like, hey, Tom, you know, got Tracy right here. Okay. Hold on. I just wanna see this guy. And then as soon as that's done. Somebody else comes up somebody else comes up, but he's he's kinda pulled in a million directions. And we're just saying that hey, trace you just just hang tight hang with us. We'll we'll we'll get them there..

"Oh, you know, getting move with this one. You know, I was very fortunate to work for coach saving LSU. And you know, can't tell you the the Mark that he had on my career. You know, that you're talking to someone that that when coach Brown went to the hospital, you know, for the last time, you know, in the state of Alabama that came across the news. And and my dad check me out of school, and and we came home, and they said it was serious. And then they came over the news and said that hit passed away. It was a is a somber moment sad moment. And you know, I'll never forget that feeling that ahead that day. So you're talking about totally different things, you know, as, you know, kids in Alabama during that time period grew up wanting to play for coach Bryant, and you know, I never had the opportunity to meet him. But you know, I could just you know, you could just sense it that, you know, I'm sure they have a lot of the same qualities. Yeah. Well, I think Alabama that shows you how much that coach and that program into that state. And I think it's similar in Ohio where the coach of the Cleveland Browns that organization can mean that much that state. Would it be like if you could get this team to the playoffs and even win a Super Bowl? Well, we're we're in this business one reason had them, and that's the go that's the ultimate prize. Now, how you get there's the difficult part? That's everybody's Bill. Now is everybody willing to the process to do it? And and I'm pretty sure that we are. And we're going to surround us up with people that are willing to pay that price and willing to pull in the same direction willing to take the word. I is not a word. I as a letter, and when we use we our those are the top things we wanna be using. When you use the letter, I as a word, it becomes very dangerous to an organization to football team and to a person. So we won't take that out of the equation. And we all won't be moving forward and not worry about the results. And and do the best that we can on each rip each day each game he tweak each meeting everything. Stay focused on what we're doing right then. And then we'll see where we're at the end of all this. But you know, that's our ultimate goal. There's only one go every year. And there's only one happy team every year. So you know, you can lump us in with all the rest of them though, the thirty one teams because that's our goal. Definitely Baker Mayfield your type of quarterback. Mayfield's a winner. And he's my topic quarterback. Yes. I like winners. What stands out about him? Freddie. You know, his competitiveness his toughness. You know? Sometimes I think as a quarterback yet to everybody knows you have to have a certain skill set. But you say a lot of quarterbacks come through and not being successful. With the skill set. It's what makes up the person that separates them. And he's got all those intangibles competitiveness toughness leadership, you know, people follow. And you know, that's what you want out of your quarterback. So and he's one he's one here. He's wanted Oklahoma. He's wanted takes his take he wanted high school. He's a winner. So I like winners, Freddie. Congratulations on winning the Cleveland Browns. Head coaching job, tremendous accomplishment. Good for you. Good for that city. And thank you for the time today, we see the best of luck in your tenure as the Cleveland Browns head coach. Yes, sir. Appreciate you. And so there's the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns, pretty kitchens boy his. This conferences this year going to be great. And if they're winning and the Browns are as relevance. "This week's Adam Schefter podcast, we will wrap up conference championship weekend. And begin to look ahead to Super Bowl fifty three. We'll do it with my outstanding colleague field Yates who talks about the patriots Stoorikhel significance and some of these that we could see change around the NFL this off season. And then we'll be joined by the ESPN NFL researcher. Evan Kaplan vise an analytical breakdown of some of the things we saw this past weekend, and what we will see in Super Bowl fifty three. And then we'll finish off the new Cleveland Browns, a coach ready kitchens who talks about the approach that he took to land a job that many wanted. But I you'll DX so we are just fresh out of the conference championship weekend. I think when we look back on it feels probably one of the most dramatic if not the most dramatic conference champions Sunday's NFL history because we've never seen two conference championship games. Go to overtime. And I also think that there's too. Incredible controversies that come out of both games oddly enough number one in the first game should penalty calls particularly pass interference be review -able and in the second game. The overtime does the overtime rule need to be changed because the patriots get a possession. And because the chiefs lose the coin flip they never even get the football in overtime. What are we think of what comes out of Sunday as we start the head into preparations for Super Bowl fifty three? Adam. I think that the most important matter from Sunday that will be addressed this off season is the pass interference and the need to review it and I saw you early on Monday morning on get up reference. Our sportscenter reference, the Bill bell has long been an advocate for making pass interference all plays review will but I think that is going to be the one that ramps up and generates more attention this off season because we've heard people that I don't think they're being that dramatic insane. This have said. This is perhaps the most agree just blown call in the history of the NFL. And it's it's not just that. It was a high leverage moment. It's that it was an incredibly obvious call like, I don't know how many violations Nickell Robey combing committed, but you could have picked like basically dealer's choice, which one of the five penalties that you want to call and the reality was the NFL called none of them. It was incredible to watch. And you know, what's interesting about what you're saying is I can remember other place from other seasons where you said, well, this is going to get that conversation going, and I remember calling various members the competition committee reaching out to them to say is this going to be reviewed this off season. And let me say this to you. I've had that conversation with someone on the competition committee for I would say each of the last five or six years and every single year. The answer comes back to me. No, we are not gonna review it every year. No, we. Are not gonna review it. Now. It's Monday morning day after conference ship. Each sunday. We're gonna reach out to more people again sh- week. We're gonna see this as you're saying is enough to get reviewed. But in my mind, we're not changing the number of challenges that coaches, given he gets three challenges. Why should he not be allowed to use them on a play? That is so important at that particular point time that has reviewable look you can challenge whether guys stepped out of bounds challenge whether he held onto the football challenge. Whether he got his feet at the end zone where the ball crossed the. I mean, there are so many things you could show. Why can't you challenge if Aref mid a bad coal, especially when in recent off seasons?.

"So I get this opponent again. It's just not something that you used to sing they had that game one. Okay. They allowed a touchdown. They'll let a third down conversion of fourth down conversion to alshon Jeffery. They'll out of four downplayed a golden Tate. I didn't love the use of the time out when they're driving up the field that they call timeout rather than ran up to the line to spike the ball where they would've had the time out where they could've used the middle field and gotten closer because they had a time out. They had to field goal that client off the crossbar and the upright. I mean, there are so many things that if they make one of those place, we're not even talking about Kirk cousins and the Vikings you play the game to win to quote, our former colleague here Herm Edwards, and you try to do your best and they took care of business against the Vikings enrolled into the playoffs with momentum. They got. Turnover. They did so many things they had to they just didn't close it out. And that is not related to the week seventeen result in the final week of the regular season in my opinion. Well, at the end of the day, Adam the fact remains the eagles get the win. It's another win for Nick foles in the play offs. And we got a lot of males asking if this momentum that Nick foles has created over the past couple of seasons means something bigger long-term in Philadelphia. Let's give a listen. Good morning. Adam Schefter, my name is Damian Boral. And I might question for you. Simple should the eagles. Now trade Carson wiz. And if they do do the Jacksonville Jaguars make the most sense. Well, Damian thanks for the question. Your question deeming is going to be the most asked disgust question of this week as we tape this ask Adam segment on Monday morning at ten fifty five eastern time. We are going to be doing NFL Lavin ESPN at noon about an hour and five minutes from now. And the question that's gonna lead off that show is going to be should the eagles. Keep Nick foles and move on from Carson Wentz. And here's our on that on the question number one. I believe that they are firmly committed to Carson Wentz. I don't think at this time at this time being the key phrase that anything that happens is going to change that Carson Wentz is a transcendent talent. What Nick foles has done has been incredible. Nobody has done that much for the Philadelphia organization. The eagles maybe in the history of football. They've been unbelievable with him. He's been a underdog in four straight postseason games. He's come through with four straight postseason eagle winds. I've eagle fan true story. Texting me last night that they've been crying crying for fifteen minutes less. I'm not going to name any names, Jim Cramer, but they were crying for fifteen straight minutes over the win last night. And so what Nick fools has done for the city. The organization is magic magic..

All these stress, but everything else is lights, and that's how everybody's going to remember that game as the game in which the kicker missed the kick. It's tough. It's tough. You know, man. That's that's tough. You know, you obviously expect the ticker like from that business go in, and you know, it's unfortunate. But that's that's the game of football. You know, you can't you just got to always be prepared yet. He just missed a mystic. I'm pretty sure routines, and he will be able to make that. But that's guaranteed or that's football. That's why so tough to to win a ballgame. Ryan if you're on that team and your teammate is the kicking who missed that kick, you say anything to do, you know, how do you handle that as a player on that joker? You gotta be a great team girl that you go to Seoul. You gotta think. Sure that. You know, you gotta elevate seasons. You gotta think of there though, you know, 'cause everybody beach about especially if we live in a social media. It's been crucified on there. So you have to fake sort of teammate as brother that have the big sure you have is back picks up because the man has a family. He works. Extremely hard is blowing his cry. So you didn't see the colts beat the Texans. But I'll repair actually I take that back. We did we said about at a restaurant area. Excellent. Once they get on Paul. Book. Yeah. We did just that you know, the colts quite well. From having faced them twice this season. They win the wildcard spot against your team in the final week of the regular season. What was your assessment of what they did against Houston? And do you think that they could go into Kansas City and up in the air ABC's number one seed? One. About the colts events being bad. So. It's hard playing. You gotta chance. One thing about the close. There's nothing sexy about that team there. There's just a bunch of guys that just work extremely well with one or another other of offensive line..
