Avalanche Re-Sign Valeri Nichushkin to 8-Year, $49 Million Contract

"But we start with the biggest story. Really, of the Denver sports landscape, the Colorado avalanche signed pending unrestricted free agent valerian to an 8 year extension. It's the big boy deal, fellas, the club announced it yesterday, the contract. By the way, and I'll just kind of get this off my chest. It's so funny the way that these sports are covered like in the NBA or in the NFL, this would be a massive get for a inside reporter, Adam Schefter, Asian or janowski, sham sharan, you know, fill in the blank, right? The teams announce it in hockey more oftentimes than it actually gets broken by reporter. I know that's a niche thought, but instead of like Ian rappaport breaking the story, like the abs just like tweet it and just interesting niche thought. But valerian and 8 year extension, the contract is worth $49 million with an annual average value of 6.1 million bucks to choose can just have the best regular season of his career, mark 25 goals, 52 points and 62 games. The abs are telling you this guy's a part of our core. Yeah, and here was a guy when he came into the league as it first rounder was considered a bus. He was a

"The adam schefter podcast where this week's episode. I share to incredibly personal text. That i received during and after the conclusion of week one that you will not want to miss which will come at the end of our interviews and all those interviews. We will start today with my colleague. My partner chris mortensen who i spent thirteen years working at. Espn with and i would not be where i am today without him. And then we'll be joined by the carolina. Panthers free safety the great young player the former second round draft pick jeremy chin as the panthers get ready to play the new orleans saints. Were dealing with a little bit of an outbreak of coverted on their own these days and as we look back to week one what i can tell you is the joy that i and others experience from watching week. One was overwhelming palpable. Like you could just feel it watching the games all come on the screen. And you're thinking. Oh yeah twenty. More weeks of this. This is how to spend a sunday. This is what we love to do. Now i happen to be in the south street seaport. Espn studios around my colleagues. Which i didn't get to do last year. And chris mortensen and i are going to have some comments in that area but to watch all these games unfold it was sensory overload and it was lovely and it was missed now the other part that was troubling about week one and i think this was the case for a lot of different people. You sit down. You love watching the games you're tracking your fantasy results. It's just tremendous. You wanna see your guys. The problem was it was hard to track some of these guys with the new. Nfl rule changing numbers. All of a sudden. You're watching sterling. Shepard who is number three when it used to be number eighty seven or mohamed sanu. Who's now number six or hollywood brown. Who went from number. Fifteen to number five or sean jackson. Ten to one chasen's is wearing number two. Dj moore's worrying number two number twelve. It was hard to figure out in many cases who was who and who was wearing what number. It's gonna take a little while to sort out now. I have a certain idea what tom brady was talking about. Now i understand with some of these veteran quarterbacks new will before i sat down to watch week one. It's hard to figure out who's wearing what number where they are what their tendencies are. That was a troubling aspect of week. One and i'm sure we'll all get used to it over. I'm but as you're absorbing the idea of watching all these football games you're trying to process who is wearing what number 'cause that was very hard to figure out in week one all right. There are many topics to get to in week. One and we're gonna start them with the guy that has worked at my side. For thirteen seasons amana. I have tremendous respect for a man that if they were building a mount rushmore of espn talents and personalities. He would belong chris mortensen. We'll look. It is the guy who as i was sitting there doing. The pre-game show sunday. Nfl sunday count on espn. I was sitting there more. And i was thinking to myself. Wow this season thirteen that. We've worked together and i believe you've been at espn since what nineteen ninety-two. My memory serves me correctly. Ninety ninety one ninety one ninety one. So i think this is the start as i thirty seconds thirty year. I yeah i mean but yeah. I was ninety one ninety one. I started covering nfl for the rocky mountain news back in nineteen ninety. But as i sat there sunday i thought to myself. Wow here we go again week. One day one. But you're thirteen with more. And i thought about those thirteen years together and i said to myself. That's a lotta shows a lot of time. A lot of memories a lot of information. A lot of calls a lot of texts a lot of laughs a lot of everything so as much as anything else i wanted to express that in a tweet and i want to express it in the podcast to thank you because if it's not for you i'm not working where i am today without. You endorsing it. Well i don't believe that's necessarily true. But i will say this. It's been a lot of fun. i think. Some of the fun things that we have is is just laughing together but also the amount of information i think we both have. And there's always some of the things you can't report or can't tell yet or is still simmering it always the most interesting from a reporting journalistic standpoint from a of a fraternity standpoint. Yeah i mean listen you may. I'm i'm proud of you. I mean. I realize you've been at it a long time. I've been added a long time. But just i've always said we're really proud of how you've come. The espn embraced. It treated people the right way and done your job at the very highest level To me as well as it's ever been done and And then at the same time they will say this and we couldn't control the pandemic kind of like a really kind of put a damper things. Last year we were separated. Certainly because of the pandemic and and this year. We're also separated in part because of the delta very pandemic and some of the justice. We're going through so i've missed. I missed sunday. You not being in the viewing room with with with me and others. I wasn't the viewing room this time for the first time of year. I did have boomer there. Chris berman getting ready for prime time. I was allowed us. Man in the room or woman didn't matter had fun and and So yeah i mean it's it's just an here. We are with another nfl season. And i've been looking forward to it as much as any any of the other. Nfl seizes that we have covered. Well i got a text in the middle of the first games on sunday from field. Yates saying that mort and boomer back together in the war room everything in the world is right because nobody gets after boomer it no war more than more does nobody has more fun if i can even tell this story one of my favorite stories matthew berry hard. Espn's fancy expert shows up his first day of work at the war. Room walks up to the front of the room and says where do i sit and more points to christmas. Jerry says just sit over there. Matthew and chris berman always was notoriously. The last one to arrive to watch because he was finishing up. Sunday countdown from the studio over to where the war room was. And so on. This particular day matt berry's first day of work as chris berman's walking into the room for his usual seat. Nobody nobody likes his see more than chris. Berman likes his seat. He sees one matthew berry stealing his seat. Chris berman says fake. You're in the wrong chair right. And thus was birth matthew berries.

Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt Agrees to a 4-Year, $112 Million Extension

"Get news that a deal has been agreed to in principle. Not sign but agreed to between. T. j. watt and the pittsburgh steelers. This was first broken by ian rapoport of the nfl network was also adam schefter. Espn that they have the deal in principle. I think they just have to put pen to paper. But it's agreed moving forward. Here's the deal. It's a four year extension worth just over our right around just over one hundred and twelve million dollars for tj. What would this has him as the highest paid defensive player in football now you can manipulate the numbers one way or the other to say how much it is per year. We'll get there all right. It's basically he's just over twenty eight million dollars per year from that extension and there's also eighty million dollars fully guaranteed at signing. Now we'll get into that in just a second but first i want to understand that. This is an extension so this goes on top of the deal that he already had for this year which was playing under the fifth year option where he was set to make ten points. I'm going from memory. I'm pretty sure it's ten point. Oh eight nine million dollars this

"Happy season to you same to you. Adam it's great to be back. And i'm looking forward to this season. I think like everybody is. Let's get it going. I can't wait hard to imagine a cheer but here we go. The marathon begins now in the marathon. Goes on for. Tom brady now entering his twenty. Second season kicks off thursday night. What can we say about tom. Brady that hasn't been said before evan. I feel one of the last times. I was on with you. Were talking right before super bowl fifty five about all the accolades with brady and they finish it off. Wins the superbowl. Mvp seven super bowl. And now he begins the season forty four years old. Which is something that we've rarely seen in nfl history. Think about there have only been three quarterbacks to start a game at forty four or older. Vinny testaverde warren. Moon and steve berg. The only one to win a game was vinny testaverde's so you think about brady if the belt of the buccaneers win on thursday night against the cowboys you'll have already matched the number of wayne's by forty four year olds in nfl history. All forty four year old players only combined to throw thirteen touchdowns. I'm sure brady will match that by game. Four or five or six somewhere early in the season so we continue to try and put in perspective all of the amazing things that he's done and shows no sign of slowing down. I mean the way he. And the buccaneers ended last season I think bill they'll come out. You know on all cylinders thursday night the goat becomes gaultier. Basically you can say about it but that that's sort of how it works. And he left behind obviously clear void. Doing and everybody's gonna be talking about that week. Four matchup october third. Tom brady new england. Which would be fantastic. But knowing what it's got its own big game but new england's its own game in the opener with to alabama quarterbacks matt jones the patriots first round. Pick this year from alabama i to a tunnel by lower the dolphins first-round pick from alabama last year. What are we say about that. One as a lot of fun the way it should out with the patriots. Qb situation now. We get to see you know former college teammates mack jones to a ton of low as you said a first. Nfl matchup between starting qb's played for nick sabin in college. Also be the first time. The bill belichick starts a rookie huby and we one couple of kind of cool nuggets for to a you can become the youngest visiting cue me to ever win a game at gillette stadium and he can also become the youngest. Qb to win consecutive games against the patriots under bill bell checks to lead the dolphins to a wind down in miami last season so to win two straight against bella check for quarterback that young will be since he's been with the patriots. We haven't seen now. You talk about matt jones and what is going to be facing came in. I think i think the the patriots defense is just kind of a real reason why he can have success early. You know you'd think about some of the guys they brought over with matthew judah on it getting some of the opt-outs back and if this defense kinda plays how sauce and things in the preseason a lot of what you read about how. That defense looks mack. Jones does what he does. He know plays a lot of talent around him. He kind of orchestrates. The offense. I the more i think about it this i. I think this could be a big year for the patriots. Back there back reich. I just feels that way and we. We saw bella check know we saw them spend all the money in free agency right. It's something that they normally hasn't done. And then they draft a quarterback in the first round. Now it's starting quarterback in the first round in a you know it seems like after the the the seven and nine blip on the radar last year. Now it's you know all systems co. again in new england. This is a really fun game a week between the dolphins team that i think has expectations as well. After finishing and six last season. Just out of the playoffs. People are sleeping on miami little. We'll find out on sunday if that's accurate or not and i do think new england's going to be very good and i think miami is going to be better than people think which sets up a very interesting matchup in week. Won't we know we know evan. That patrick mahomes gonna be really good. He's trying to get the cheese back to the super bowl. He's already talked about a twenty and oh season if such a thing could even happen. I don't know that's gonna be really hard. But but there is precedent for how they've started the season. What can we say about. Mahomes getting ready to face the cleveland browns in their opener. Twenty no may be a bit lofty as you said but in terms of perfection in september each year he personifies. It's so patrick. Mahomes among the best. If not the best start running quarterback manifield history and you look at numbers specifically in the month of september is tended does a starter he has thirty two touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He has never thrown interception september. That's the most touchdowns without an interception in a single month. All time He in season openers of cheese been justice. Flawless ten touchdown passes no interceptions chiefs averaging thirty seven points per game. So when you think about a team that is trying to get back to its third straight super bowl which has not been done very often. Nfl history. it's only happened. Three other times The patriots did it recently. Sixteen eighteen so that kinda clouds or view of how easy it may be. It's not you know. We've only seen three instances in nfl history..

"Back to another the adam schefter podcast. The regular season opening podcast. In today's episode. We will be joined by the co. ceo of the washington football team. Tonya snyder as she sits down. I believe and gives her first in-depth podcast interview on the state of affairs with the washington football team and then we'll be joined by the espn analytics guru. Evan kaplan as he breaks down. This week's big match ups between mack. Jones intuit's by loa patrick mahomes and baker mayfield and all the other notable action from week one and it's hard to imagine that we are here but we are. That off. Season goes very quickly and on sunday morning this past sunday morning when i woke up about six. Am six fifteen. I was laying in bed and realizing i didn't have to check on the status of a particular player that morning didn't have to worry about getting up for the sportscenter. Didn't have to get up to shave for sunday. Nfl countdown could take my time on a leisurely sunday morning on labor day weekend and then as i laid their the thought occurred to me that this will be the last time that i can do this on a sunday until february twentieth. Two thousand twenty two and people say. Are you excited about the season. of course. we're always excited about football season. There's no other way to be but it's a little like asking. Are you excited to go run a marathon twenty six point. Two miles will yes. You're excited you've trained. You're ready thought about it. But the idea of the twenty six point two miles that lay in front of you are daunting and we are about to embark all of us on this marathon. That is the nfl season a marathon that will have twists and turns and take us in directions that we were planning. The nfl manage to get through last season. The kovic season without any cancellations of any games but this year the league is going to be challenged the way society is challenged with the spread of the delta variant and. I'm not trying to harp on this. I'm just giving you a reality. Last year was a little bit like the wild west. This year we've got a number of players being vaccinated some players who are not being vaccinated and they're going to be more and more stories of teams losing key players at key moments the way it happened last year say when the denver broncos lost their entire quarterback room before they played a game against the new orleans saints. It's going to happen this year. They were going to be big losses at big moments but the fact of the matter is we are here. And we're also here on the start of the season which always means that there will be a rush as i'm sure there will be this weekend for teams and players to complete contract extension. We've heard about. Tj watt the steelers outstanding. young pass. Rusher not practicing all summer while awaiting new deal to which i would say how to both sides. Not get that deal done by the time. The regular season starts sunday in pittsburgh place buffalo. I would think of course they're gonna get it done tidgy. What has to get that deal done. The steelers need to get their best defensive player sign long-term and even though he's gone through the summer without there being a new deal. I would bet even money that by the time. The season kicks off sunday. Tj watt will have a new record breaking deal in line with what the chargers pay. Joey bosa with a big annual average. That makes him if not the highest paid defensive player in the game certainly amongst the highest paid defensive players in the game another story line ahead in the season. that's ahead. We are about to begin on thursday night in tampa with the dallas cowboys at the tampa bay buccaneers and we are about to begin this podcast to and the i guess today the way to kick off the season is with a woman who hasn't done many. If any of these types of interviews today we are joined by the co ceo of the washington football team. The woman in charge of that franchise reading it. Forward tonya snyder. This is not my Comfort zone and i know i need to change this so i appreciate You you you come highly recommended with a lot of f. Also listen to quite a few of your podcast by the way. Which are very interesting so i hopped on to listen to a couple of minutes and myself. You know the entire thing. I couldn't get off so you say you've done a great job. That's very nice you to say for those who don't know you've now been named co ceo and you have taken over the day to day operations for the next several months. Did you ever think that you would one day. Find yourself in the position you are today. When did that become a thought that you could be this. Involved this at the forefront of an nfl football franchise the way you are today. Probably it was. It was i knew i would have. I knew i would have my own business And i definitely from an early age. One hundred two mild thing. But i definitely wanted it to be in the fashion world and And and still really you know loved field and have a very strong interest in that But i think. I think the wonderful part about where i sit today. Is you know. I've been. I've been around i. My responsibility shifted to As dan i had children. And i thought you know my children have my business anyway. Just everything will be but as you. Well know it's a two wonderful full-time much more big responsibility and actually it never goes away. So i took i have so much respect for my mother. Now my gosh And and you know. Each of my kids are all very different to so so raising raising children and being around football and You know having an opportunity when dan when we purchase the team to be able to You know to get involved and so to be where i am. Today it's It's pretty surreal. But i'm ready. I've been on the sidelines for a while. When dave says she wants to purchase the team. What's.

"I'm from europe and from prague and places like that and Before kobe was set to go out last summer all of august and take my whole family camps. All around germany planned for code last week. I got a request to do a podcast guys from ireland. And so i agreed to do it. And i went on there and i could not believe how much they knew about my life and football in the states and the questions they were asking it was incredible and they told me that football in ireland. Shoot up kitchen. Obviously these guys doing this podcast. They must have a big following and they knew so much blew me away. That's exploded over there. So so that's why. I want somebody digital and then since then it's just grown that crazy so it's become a really cool thing because a lot of the stuff that young order backs it slips through the cracks either. The coach doesn't know it. The middle school coach doesn't know that time to talk about it so i've got content there. It's like well. Here's who's actually walking. Who right i mean you know. Coach has got to install it and then you go all of a sudden play game boom but we didn't get to slow it down and really learn it so i just. I continually populate content in there just to help. This is the most complex position in all of sports. Right i mean. This isn't just something that you know. Just pick up a bat and swing it right And so the the importance of young players. Like if you're not developing with somebody at a young age it's kinda too late. This position is getting very refined. And there's a lot of good coaches out there so Suggests that for him and it's been a great resource in this season. I've got a bunch of stuff. Also have guests come on right so some balls out on saturday in college. Come on sunday and talk about it with the members. That's kind of cool suit. So if we had a guest now who might be the week one. Guess you gotta guess who's gonna ball out on opening day georgia's got clemson so i think jd. But i i'm i'm really excited man. Throw a name. I'm really excited for kate mcnamara in michigan. So i know you're in a lump Just so you know jim. Harbaugh has quarterback cade mcnamara within six grade. He's a real guy. Is she. And forgive me for not even knowing this and i should and i will but i'm not there yet. Is kate macnamara. Projected to store for michigan opening day. He's been announced as the starter. Yes shows you how much. I know about michigan football right right. Like a minimum of one point committed to notre dame de committed and went to michigan. So you're gonna like more okay. And and what. She like is a quarterback. Give me an idea of what. I'm going to see when i watch eight mcnamara play. I'm not setting expectations. But i i the only person i can compare him to in terms of how he approaches the game. Tom brady this kid since seventh grade. Takes everything serious. And there's been a pattern if there's teammates of his. Who aren't that tough or who don't really want to do that. Don't really wanna work that hard. Those players don't like i. We'll be paying attention to k- mcnamara we'll be paying attached to qb summit digital would be paying attention to sam darnold joe bar and all the quarterbacks you've trained tutor during the all season join. I really appreciate things in today. Thanks for having me. On out there is jordan palmer who trains a number of nfl veteran..

"Zooms helping young quarterbacks develop ahead of the pack. Somebody who's trained. Nfl quarterbacks during the off season somebody's got tremendous insight into them without further. Ado jordan palmer tour. We're getting ready to head into a big season. The i seventeen game season. You say your off season working with a number of nfl quarterbacks. Give me an idea. Some of the guys you work with and what you're expecting to see added them this season Will for some of the young guys I spent a lot of time Whichever lawrence and it was an interesting time because You know when he landed in california he did. He was unaware of the shoulder. Injury torn left rotator cuff and so Found that The whole process of bump in the pro day up Throwing and and And obviously the jaguars selecting him and and in the process of rehabbing getting better so it was just a very unique off season for trevor for sure and one nacre me. I've never bumped a pro day up eight weeks. You know bumped went back a week or so but never up eight weeks so in nine. It was fun watching him. Kind of develop in also. He had a lot of life. Changes you know you got you got married. And just a bunch of a bunch of life happening for him Obviously he's at the center of a lot of conversations and has been for a long time. so so trevor. was one of the young guys chambers. Shell a guy who who's With the chiefs. Right now. And i've made many comments that he's before the draft. I don't care what i don't. I don't know if he's going to get drafted and i don't care what round but i think he's gonna play twelve years and they just released the guy. He was competing with Yesterday so it looks like he's going to be a great addition for the room in kansas city and And then on the veterans side of things. Josh allen sam donaldson low temperature borough pile alan who had basically identical injury to dak prescott in So the rehabilitation of that and and He is he came back And then you have a bunch of younger guys and was able to cross basil. The tennessee recite ends running backs. His guys have their their Their players out here. And i've been spending more time. Last year's with the pass catchers the titans Receivers and running backs so is able to work with a lot of rookies in a lot of a lot of veterans law. Let's get back to lawrence a second so far. Urban meyer is not named him. Starting quarterback what is your take on. What's going on there. And the way that he's performed this preseason we'll it's interesting and because he's the number one pick and because what's happened the last two years with the number one pick it's a head scratcher as to why you wouldn't name him the starter on draft day. It's just go ahead and go forward with it. But adam you you've been doing this a long time. What he's doing what what urban is doing whichever right now was the nor three or four years ago. I can think of all sorts of guys that i just that i've worked with. Who split reps all the way through training camp split reps di weren't even named the starter even though it was their team. I mean to shawn watson split repsol through camp as a rip going into his rookie year and then they named tom savage the starter and then he benched tom savage at half time and then john watson was named the starter at halftime. We want any look back and we'll wells a waste of fifty percent of these reps. This dude could've been getting better. And then kyle. Mary comes on and they just roll with them. And then joe borough last year. They just roll with them. And so it's only really a head scratcher because of what the last two t the way that the last two organizations that selected quarterback number one have behaved and And now you can make an argument. She's a good player and he's proven and all that you've already made your decision. Hey can take travelers number one. So i'm more on the side of give him every rep possible because adam. Here's an interesting piece of this. And i had a. I was chargers Niners practice on friday. And i was talking to a A bigger name former head coach. And we're we're we're talking afterwards about this and he brought up a great point and said you know it's not just the young player that needs reps. It's the other players that need reps with that. Young blair right solicit let's say kinship with jaguars Have a veteran center. That center needs to know what things that trevor doesn't see it like we can talk about in meetings that You know the quarterback's going to point to the will linebacker ray like that. Senator needs to know what trevor knows and doesn't know and so he's gotta get those reps and so. It's not just the reps that trevor needs the whiteout. No under getting a feel for. How trevor is gonna throw this ball the old line getting feel for how trevor is gonna call this and and so. That's why i'm more on the side of if he's gonna be your started giving every possible. Now you worked with. Sam darnold josh allen. You give me some other quarterbacks that we work during the off-season jordan. Yes sam. Darnold josh allen kyle. Alad spent a lot of time. With joe borough as he's gone through his rehabilitation and then as basically once he got cleared to throw a we kind of put some work together and then this was a big off season. I worked with a more college guys than i ever have. Passed and a lot of guys that are coming out next year. So we're going to go into those college guys in a moment. But gimme what we're going to see this year. From sam darnold and joe borough being that you worked intimately with bill during the off season. Well i think you know an interesting one because And i know it's a new regime over there but you know if you look at sam situation last year and the situation that he stepped into right now. It's pretty interesting because team is starts off with the same right. Everybody has the same salary cap. Everybody you know. Everybody has the same financial backing.

"Warren draft. Two months from tuesday night october tenth. Put it in your calendar. I am already for that i. I've said find yourself somebody that looks at you. The way that adam schefter looks at the nba owen loves the nba fantasy. The way you do my friend matthew. Thanks for the time today. Appreciate it outstanding and i will be using all those picks against you in the world. I expect nothing all right. Thanks jeff. you'll see soon. Take care and there is matthew berry with some insight on some players that you should and shouldn't be taking and this year's fancy drift. I'll be hopefully deploying some that information against matthew himself in our upcoming warren draft wednesday night september eighth. I greatly look forward to that. It should be just fantastic. Day also had my first trip to an nfl training facility. And i think two years over the weekend. We're not to the new york jets complex over the weekend. Spent the morning there visiting with some people gathering information for future stories. Very interesting trip. Nice to be out in person. There is nothing like connecting with people. You haven't seen in a long time chance to sit down and had a chance to meet for the first time in person. Robert solid was a guest on this podcast. Last year the chance to visit with some other jets officials enjoyed going out to the jets training facility and florin park over the weekend. And we'll see with that visit yields in terms of the stories we have on. Espn in the coming weeks. Also how peyton manning speech this weekend at the pro football hall of fame. As i'm watching that i'm saying to myself it sounds like this is a stump speech for him running for commissioner of the nfl. That's what it sounded like. And by the way if he were to take over as the commissioner of the nfl. It's one of the few jobs that we know he get where it actually be a raise in salary hughes to making what twenty five thirty million dollars isn't. Nfl quarterback a. year. And if he goes and becomes the commissioner one day we should show me sounded like he was stumping to do over the weekend. Yeah keep a salary going exactly where it was now. I always thought peyton. Manning would wind up in a front office as a team president very possibly as a team owner putting together. A consortium of people to buy an nfl franchise. There's going to be something big for pay whether it is ownership whether it is for office work whatever it may be but in watching him give us hoping speech or weaken the thought of out. Maybe he could be the next. Nfl commissioner for roger goodell. Because that's what it certainly sounded like. He was talking about as he gave a speech because it six minutes to allocate it however he wanted any number of people he could have gone in any number directions and instead it almost sounded like he was making his case for taking care of the legacy of the game and the sport of football never really stood out to me. In addition to some of the other great speeches from edgerrin james charles woodson and john lynch and drew pearson in the class of two thousand twenty one. That's always a special event moving emotional than because that right. There is your chance as a hall of fame duckie to thank all the people who helped you pave the way to thank all the people who helped pave the way for you to make it from your pop warner teams your high school your college to the nfl to canton ohio. The pinnacle of their career. That's their final sendoff in football and the man who delivered those speeches. This weekend certainly made account. They did a tremendous job as did austin editor. Thank for being on this podcast. As did my producer christina buswell for putting this all together and we appreciate you the listener for tuning in to another adam schefter podcast before we sign off on today's episode. "Top thirteen for me. But it's only because we don't know they're playing time. But i think we'll feels in lance have. Rg three rookie year potential because of the offenses therein the coaching staff and their dual threat ability. I think both those guys matthew draft them. If you can the issue is how soon are they. Playing right end right. None of us know the answer. My guess would be an. It's just a guess we're going to see them at some point is it. We threes week six and when they do get cold upon. You're gonna want them in your lineup. But the question is how are you willing to risk that pick. How long can you carry them on their roster. There these questions that everybody's gonna have to wrestle with right and those the tough decisions i think looking at espn for example ryan fitzpatrick going as qb. Twenty four is going these. Qb twenty two field is going qb eighteen. So they're all going very very late so So there are some guys It'll give you one of the one. This is another one. That's sort of shaky quarterback situation but field. Yates and i talked about this on the fantasy. Focus podcast that you can get wherever you listen to the adam schefter podcast than i do it every single day but Cam newton candidate is not being drafted currently currently during his two-day twenty-seven but he's not being Really in the majority weeks. Now shortly sean. We'll see what happens with mac jones but can note last. Year was the sixteenth best quarterback in fantasy with literally known a throat yet right. His first year in the system he had code. We've heard offseason that. He never felt right after coming back matt in. We're obviously still all learning about About kobe the effects on the body now camp says he hundred percent healthy healthy has been in. Years is sexy era. Josh system and obvious fakes out spent heavily agency in. Got a bunch of pass schedules. Last year cam. Newton's best or best pass catchers kumar's not mars is about store intervene but jacoby march be the number one wide receiver in another team. All the respect to jacoby myers right. He should not be the alpha weisensee. Nfl team and yet. That's all cam. Newton throws last year but now they've added johnny smith. They've got hundred hundred. Doesn't i go. The added kendrick board. They have a myers back. And obviously cam has dilbert ability with. His legs is a guy with double digit rushing touchdowns last year again with known to throat to last year and not fully out the he was still a serviceable. Qb to cue sixteen hundred game basis is going to be twenty seven. His situation has improved this year last year on a variety levels and yet he's going to be twenty seven despite being so Actually cam as long as you keep. That job is potentially a sleeper more podcast content in just a moment but first football's almost here draft draftkings..

"It'll be on it. I think because he was injured for so much last year. People don't understand how good this guy is. How officially is at. This came back in week. Twelve last year had a nineteen point. Nine percent target share. Let all running backs obviously. Pr form has the format. We played it. Espn as default. So he's so huge. The passing game guy had nine games last year. Averaged eighteen point six touches. Over one hundred scrimmage yards those nine games had fifteen fantasy points in sixty nine four games that he played last year. Who's running back nine on a police for games basis last year. I think people think off knuckleheads season last year and it's not true in in a year in which johnson herbert was a revelation. But they don't with a lot of injuries awesome heckler when he was out there performed very very well and the chargers as a team or one of the offense is just as a whole that. I'm high on this year at your argument against ecuador is that they're worried about Touchdown equity for him when they get in close. Is it josh. What kelly isn't larry roundtree. Today they pull somebody for that. But if you've watched austin ecuador over the course of his career this is when they're not scared about the goal. This is somebody that you're not scared to go between the tackles. He's tough players. There is the nfl. I he's the he's the he's one of the best offensive players and i just don't think with all respect to carry around for your backfield with it again enclosed. They're not to say like you know what we should do. Now that we're on the three yard line take one of our best players on offense off the field. And i'll tell you this. He raised a great point. He created a little bit of a fancy headline in my mind. He said to fantasy managers out. There take me you want to take me. Trust me take me okay and i said how come and he said i'll tell you what joe lombardi came over from new orleans. He's our new offensive coordinator. How did alvin kamara do in new orleans. I am alvin kamara for the chargers this year. There's y'all i mean you don't need to say anything more than that right and and we all know how right i will. Camaro has been for fantasy. and how creatively. They used him in new orleans. I think adler has a similar skill set in a lot of ways. Chimeras not atypical. Goldline back but it certainly. He's you know he's been a fantasy superstar ever since he came in the league. So i'm all in on on austin actor this year I am higher than consensus in terms of my ranks. There's a couple of offenses that i'm in on this year. Jenrette that i think are under the radar like everyone against it. Everyone likes tampa bay. You know those are the obvious my friend but the chargers are one of them. You mentioned joe lombardi and i've to others seattle. I think seattle is one of those people today. We get their little susie. You know. But i think shane waldron comes from the rams their former passing game coordinator. Sean mcvay the site bowl. I think there is a chance for years. Fantasy management like. Hey let russ cook Hang on twitter. Actually let cook. I think there's a good chance at him that this year. They let russ cook. And if that's the case decay metcalf tile walk it chris carson and russell wilson are all tremendous values and i think office has a chance to really explode this year. What's the other option. She said a couple offenses russillo one. You're gonna call me a homer. But i'm sticking by the wash i. I saw football team. This is ryan fitzpatrick as at this stage is career has become a very good professional quarterback and i say that with all respect. That's not an insult him. Why is he russell. Wilson is he. Tom brady at home. She is not but he's an above average professional quarterback who has had amnesties success. He was a very good fantasy starter very viable fantasy starter for two years of miami is When he was with the jets and i would argue that surrounded by tariff maclaurin. Curtis samuel logan. Thomas antonio gives him out of the backfield diana brown the third round rookie out of north carolina. This is the best offense. That ryan's attracted several played with and fitzy is a guy that is not scared to throw a deep. He's not scared. Throwing traffic scott turner. I think is a very good creative offensive line. Who last year head to do what he had to do. Because of the quarterbacks added a bunch of conservative quarterback way but now you have. Somebody like patrick. Who has a little bit yolo to his game knowing new got and you look at all those players speeds speak but they've done a really nice job of that team in terms of building it because maclaurin fast samuels fast. Logan thomas is fast for a tight end. Dining round is one of the fastest players coming out of the draft this year antonio gibson's fads like it's speed until you get a guy like fits. He likes to grow the roots. Who's not scared to be aggressive down the field going to be a good team. This is going to be good team. And i think they feel like they can be a lot more aggressive on offense because their defense is so good that fifty throws a pick down. And it's you know throws it deeper gets picked off from the other. Two thousand eight hundred twenty their defense going to bail them out. So i actually think the watching football team especially where they're going in drafts our values across the board. I agree with that. And i spoke to somebody in washington over the weekend and i always like to say when i'm talking to you. Hey who's guy on your team. That i want to draft ans- you is. Yeah and one of the names that came back to me. This weekend was logan. Thomas i think a lot of people think logan thomas was a fluke last year. They didn't really have anyone. Logan thomas is not somebody that has i think he's just emerging he somebody that i haven't dynasty league than i'm very excited about the young player an athletic flair. They like logan. Thomas quite a bit as you know and so all you have to do is follow the money. They shot to a big money contract extension. They're not doing that if they don't believe in them. So clearly. they believe in logan thomas..

alvin kamara joe lombardi russ cook chargers johnson herbert larry roundtree new orleans ecuador maclaurin Jenrette shane waldron Sean mcvay austin chris carson Espn logan thomas seattle Curtis samuel logan

"Mine pro bowls of defensive rookie of the year defensive player of the year in two thousand nine q imagine how history would have been different. If the tuck rule play when he sacked on brady stood as many people thought it should have. It would have delayed the start of the patriots dynastic. Run and it would've helped the raiders. Perhaps go on to a super bowl charles. Woodson was believable. Tom floors to coach the raiders and seahawks man who has four super bowl rings. Incredible to think about that. He and mike ditka are the only people in nfl history who have been super bowl winners as players. Assistant coaches and head coaches. Dick is now tom. Flores will go in and bill nunn a name that might not be familiar to many people but he started his career with the steelers. As a part time scout he became the first evaluator league. History to show an nfl franchise. The long term value of scouting players at black colleges and universities. Guy was incredible ahead of his time. Just a tremendous. Nfl contributor and now bill nunn goes into the pro football team but of course john lynch demand we mentioned the man who is the guest on the podcast. This week played in tampa from nineteen ninety three to two thousand three played in denver from two thousand four to two thousand seven. He was a nine time. Pro bowl player. A two-time first team all pro selection a super bowl winner a former great baseball prospect and people will talk about that today. John lynch will look back on what could have been a tremendous baseball career as well as looking ahead to the season ahead without further. Ado my friend. my colleague. the great john lynch. We'll get back to the podcast and just a moment but first commercial support for this. "Through what sean had to go through. But if i was a coach for team. I wouldn't be able to be there for him and the way that i write. I've been able to help guys deal with everything on and off the field. And i get to be like a big brother to allow guys. I think that that that fulfils me far more than coaching for you. It's not about wins and losses for me is about helping guiseley the best and the other thing. That's interesting to me about you. Aside from all the guys who work with aside from all you overcome is that you grew up in south minneapolis. In the neighborhood. In which george floyd was killed. So when you saw that unfold. What did that do thinking. How did that make you feel. And how has that impacted the manual today. Quincy hey grew. He used taylor swift route from where i grew up in at a at a corner store. They're not free kooning throughout my in it. I mean it wasn't shocking that it happened to minnesota because of the systemic issues there but It was frustrating. As i think that people were all aware but he said light on a situation. I think that everybody needs a fake. That was really really thankful. The lot of the guys are so i feel like stepped up in a way that they should have and i hope that We continue to see change on an unfortunate enough to kind of help out. A lot of black quarterbacks right and i feel like those guys can be individuals who really Bring change to our country because keep listening to them. They look up to Those are the guys that people really care about. You're also around league when we look across that whether it's your influence whether where different place in society you're seeing black quarterbacks basically rise the forefront right to shawn watson russell wilson patrick mahomes the young court the young college quarterbacks that your tutoring to become the next faces of this game why does shift now. Why hasn't this happened ten years ago twenty years ago. What's the difference they're getting. They're getting more opportunities. Because people need athletic quarterbacks right so guys who would have traditions like hey. You're really athletic. You're the best team go played running back wide receiver. Go play safety those guy. Those guys now at a young age are told. No you're the quarterback like we're going to teach you and they're getting the opportunity exposed to really good quarterback trainers like there's quarterback all over the country who are able to help these guys grow and they're not doing outlandish price. It's no longer like a barrier entry. That you need in the way that those southern california quarterbacks who all were tall widened came.

"Welcome back to another episode of the adam schefter podcast and is frightening camp week. Here we go on wednesday july twenty first. The dallas cowboys and pittsburgh steelers are opening training camp. And on this week's episode of the adam schefter. Podcast we will be joined by tom. Brady's longtime body coach massage therapist mental grew the man that has helped get him to the point where he is at his career. Alex guerrero as the buccaneers open. Training camp is tom. Brady relies on alex. Guerrero we'll have mr guerrero himself share with us how he has helped eh needed. Tom brady's career and help them become the legend that he actually is as for the headlines. Last week how. About the sad story of richard sherman. Which really is a continuation of the disappointing developments with the legion of boom in seattle. Once one of the most famous and feared secondaries that we've ever seen in the nfl you take a look at what's happened to that particular group of players and it's hard to imagine what's become of them. How about former pro bowl. Cornerback brandon browner a member of the legion of doom and undrafted player. Who signed by seattle out of the canadian football league. He is now in san quentin state prison in california. He is in the beginning stages of an eight year. Sentence for attempted murder and two misdemeanor counts of child cruelty. How 'bout earl. Thomas the way that his career in seattle ended with him giving the finger to pete carroll before he wound up signing with baltimore where he wound up being cut for conduct detrimental to the team after he got into a fight with the ravens safety chuck clark during a training camp practice in late august a year ago before there were issues. Where essentially in january this past year. Nina thomas earl. Thomas wife was granted a restraining order against her husband. Shortly after christmas when she claimed that url presented a clear and present. Danger allegations that earl. Thomas of course later denied. And then we so richard sherman last week. Admitting that he was remorseful that he'd had some challenging times here in his personal life. Him being arrested on five different misdemeanor charges now waiting to see what happens to him going forward brandon. Browner earl thomas. Richard sherman once celebrated hailed deified in seattle as integral members of the legion of boom. Now all in their own challenging difficult personal legal situations and really. I don't know that there's a moral to the story other than it's just amazing that something like that could happen to. Men is celebrated as these three particular individuals were hopefully everything works for everybody involved. All right on this week's podcast. We mentioned earlier. Alex guerrero the body coach of tom. Brady the man that has helped him get to where he is today. He's really accomplished quite a lot and very rarely. Do you get to hear from him and his name out there often but i figured that it will be right with tampa opening training camp this week with players essentially going into their little bubbles their own personal bubbles that we'd reach out to the guy that the new york times what's described as tom brady spiritual.

"Might have been might have been was as good if not better than any offensive line coach in the history of the nfl. I think he helped revolutionize blocking schemes. He helped super bowl teams in three different decades with the denver broncos the nineteen eighties the nine hundred ninety s and two thousand thirteen in every offensive line. That alex gibbs ever coached was better because he was a part of it and not only was he a great offensive line coach in all time offensive. Line coach he was a great man and he was somebody who everybody knew he did. Not like talking to the media. But i'm going to let everybody in an old secret here. As much as he disliked the media he liked talking to reporters and in fact. I wound up. Going over to alex gibbs house many occasions to have dinner with him and his partner trenna lovely and i want to offer my condolences to china on the loss of such a great man who suffered a stroke back in february and struggle with his health ever since and passed away. Monday at the age of eighty. It's hard to imagine. A man who was a yellowed is offensive. Line who hiked all the time he and i hike camelback mountain together. It's so much unbelievable gardner in his backyard a renaissance man new literature. This guy was one of a kind losses life monday. You could ask the players who play from probably hated playing from while they did and then once they didn't they knew the impact he had on them and his family and all the people whose paths he crossed. Which were many alex. Gibbs gone at the way too. Early age of eighty condolences to try to condolences to the family on the loss of a great coach and a great man. Very sorry that. I want to thank kenny. Dichter the wheels up. Ceo for dispensing the knowledge insight and information that he did today. I want to thank my great producer. "There. That place was the best and in fact the very first time that my wife met my parents. We're driving to the beach and we agreed to meet at bagel city to get bagels to bring to the beach and that was the very first time that my parents met the woman. I was gonna marry in the parking lot of bagels city. So it's got a special place and special meaning to make and what would you order there. What was the classic. Adam schefter order at bagel city one bagel back then. I think i'd have a bagel and wife or sell any of it by the way you're ahead of your time that's that you're ahead of your time. What what adam in michigan. What whatever you lean. What was the one thing. You took away from the university of michigan. Did you actually kind of lean on today so if there was one lesson you asked me about berkshire hathaway i ask you about michigan and ann arbor. What did you take out of there to help you become you. I think the biggest thing is. I went there with hopes and ideas of to law school or business school and somehow wound up at the student newspaper. Which is not what. I set out to do when i went. There and michigan taught me about journalism and got to hang around both mbeki with a little bit and i learned an awful lot from him back in the day. It was my first exposure to big time athletics and two athletes at our school as a basketball player. As you were kenny. Cosker was we didn't have people like that right that like big time stars and athletes so it just opened my eyes to that world the reporting of it with a great network of friends. I'm so proud and happy for all of my michigan french who've gone on to do so many great things we talk about all the great people that have come from bill. Jfk and there also are a great number of people that have come from michigan who've gone and done great things and my group of friends at michigan they are also successful in their own right personally professionally at look at that group of men and how they rubbed off on me and help make me the person i am today and so there's no specific answer other than to say it helped mold me professionally and personally for better or worse into the person that i am today. So adam you live in new york. You live in the united states if you had to choose or you could choose another country and other city boy to live in. And i'm not taking away the sports journalism. I'm not taking anything away but if there was somewhere else that adam schefter could live. I know you're a a new york through and through person. Where would adam schefter and his family lives. Well it's interesting because colorado piece of colorado's my soul to this day like i love that place. I lived there for over fifteen years and it was so beautiful. If i could just disappear though but it'll be your australia kenny. Somewhere like that. Just go missing. My wife has been watching some real estate show from australia. Maybe you've seen it. Maybe your wife. Shana seen it. But these guys that sell real estate in australia you know show them talking about and my wife said to me and she's not want to travel very much or at all she said. We'll looks nice there. I think i could live there. And i'm like when you're ready to go to australia and moved there. I'm ready to go with. Us give me the word. I would say this may be tough to cover the nfl with that. Time chains beds. You would be a massive was trillion rules football journalism. That's what is right up your alley physicality the justice style strang. Hey you know what. I'm gonna do this. Nfl thing for a little while longer. And then in the next phase of my career. I want to go join jimmy roberts or do something with golf and travel around to these great stops and follow these great golfers and be around that game and watch the way. I've gotten so obsessed with that watching these guys that in my next chapter post football post reporting that may be something that interests me okay. Well that's it. I think we got a very honest answer. From adam and adam i could see you doing a great job in the golf world and you know like i said i. I'm a believer that again. If you can dream it you can do it. The growth that you've had the success that you've achieved. It's been unbelievable to watch. And i'm proud of you and i'm proud that you're my friend and i'm proud that i have seen some of this from a distance and i tip my cap to you. My high school basketball team mate. My running mate adam. Thanks for having me. Let's go cougars. Belmore jfk and areas my friend one of the great businessman in our country one of the great marketers one of the great success stories. Kenny dichter and again. I think there are many words of wisdom there that hopefully some people can lean on listen to and have resonate in a memory banks for use at another time and so we are coming off the summer. Break a brief summer break. Here's one thing that's going to stand out my memory. Our family got to puppies in january apple and brady too little laver doodles well last week. Brady terror that he is. I say their crosses between terrorism. Piranhas jumped up my wife and bit her apple computer. Just spit it. Hit the screen took a chunk out of the screen. Wife no longer has in apple computer so we have one labrador named apple and brady 'cause another apple not to work. This is something that of course will mark our summer territory. That was an expensive bite. You don't wanna bite in apple computer that now needs to be entirely replaced. I want to thank my dogs for basically tormenting my summer break like that fighting into everything great job by brady and apple and it also want to say goodbye to one of the greatest coaches in..

I limited something. All the coaches. I've had the privilege of working with all the people come from the nfl to come work in tv. I say it all the time. Then you will not have the highs and lows that you get from working within an organization but you will not be up sunday night at two in the morning wondering why you ran a certain play. Why a certain player got hurt. What you're gonna do this upcoming week. you'll sleep easier. you'll leave easier. life will be better. it won't be as exciting. It won't be as depressing. It'll be more balanced and more even and you know what am i say. I get to coach. Thirty two teams every sunday. And i haven't lost a game fourteen years and it's the best avenue was pets notes. Okay i'm okay. When he he keeps young a thank you for the time today. Everybody out there. Ask for this past holiday father's day. I dedicated myself to watching the golfer that i selected for my weekly golf pool. That has become the focus of my off season fun. I shared the story last week. About how i got into this golf pool with some friends of mine where we pick a golfer each week and you get the corresponding points based off his winnings. Well the man that i chose for the us open was one jon rahm. That was my pick and jon rahm started out. Thursday diesen played a little bit better on friday saturday. Not so much a double bogey on the backside and as soon as he did that and he threw the ball away in disgust disgusted myself. I said there goes my chance to win this tournament to vault to stay in first place and i was really bummed out at a couple of people around league who know that in this pool and they texted me. Hey john roms got a chance. On then i said no he double bogeyed it away on saturday. Well to my surprise jon. Rahm made my father's day and i want to personally. Thank jon rahm and congratulate him for becoming the first spaniard to win the us open. That was awesome and his post-game speech was so great giving thanks to semi ballast eros thanking him and paying tribute to that guy for not being able to win the us open but for finally bringing a us open championship to spain. And what it meant to me personally honestly. It wrapped up my father's day and that was the most fun that i've had watching a sporting event. And i can't tell you how long i jumped off my couch when he may birdie putts at seventeen and eighteen a twenty two foot part in an eighteen foot. I can't believe that. I listened to golf and this to every shot and i live and die with every shot at my weekly golfer takes john rob took me on a journey that i will always remember on father's day and i want to personally thank him for everyone in spain. Remember him as the first guy to win a us open from that country. And i always will remember him for making my two thousand twenty one father's day complete and for elevating us in the standings keeping us in first place and widening the gap between him between first place in the competition. Jon rome you are the man man that was awesome and i love watching that and i want to thank him for that and i also want to thank bill cower for taking the time to spend with us in this podcast this week. "Welcome back for another episode of the adam schefter podcast and on this week's episode we will be joined by the former head. Coach of the pittsburgh steelers the current. Cbs analyst a two thousand twenty pro. Football hall of fame. Inducted will be inducted in the ceremony this summer due to the pandemic last summer and the author of heart and steel along with the writer. Michael holly bill cower. Mr chin himself will join us and share some insights about his life and what he has planned for his hall of fame speech later this summer and for those who are wondering on last week's episode i urge you to go back and listen to it. We had on greg olsen who is retiring from the nfl who is joining fox as their number two analyst working with kevin burkhardt this summer and he told the story of his eight-year-old son tj. Who got a heart transplant. Early in june and there are many podcasts. We've done we're. I've heard from so many people in fact one person a friend of mine out in colorado hosted radio show. Lou from littleton aka. Tom newgen texted me. This just finished. Podcasts fantastic the first thing i thought of was god doesn't give you more than you can handle greg. Olsen was the perfect person to handle the situation with his son. What a great guy. The other text. I got was from the senior vice president of production and talent development at fox sports a man that had a huge role in hiring greg olsen and unsolicited. He sent me a text that said it got a little dusty in my car on the drive home. Wow powerful stuff so awesome that he's so open about it. I thanked him for the texan. He wrote back. He didn't tell you the story of the rehearsal game. He did about four years ago for us when he was in la. I paired him up with kevin burkhardt. Then because kevin lose in la. But i had no idea that they knew each other and had that history it was. Maybe the best rehearsal audition i have ever seen. He's a complete natural. And anybody. Who heard greg olsen on the podcast. Last week would understand that and know how charismatic. How thoughtful how great the guy is. So if you haven't had a chance to listen to greg olsen last week. I recommend you going back to listen to that the next couple of weeks. We're going to take a little summer break. We rarely do that. But i think that the football world can do without us for a couple of weeks here and when we get back the question will be. How many if any franchise players will get term deals done by the july fifteenth deadline. Those players eligible for long-term deals include the buccaneers wide receiver. Chris godwin the bears wide receiver allen robinson the jaguars offensive tackle cam. Robinson the jets safety. Marcus maye and the saints safety marcus. Williams all will be eligible to sign long-term deals and have to get it done by july fifteenth and once that franchise deadline day comes and goes that to me is when we start to gear back up to training camp. Which of course will lead us into the questions of whether our rogers shows up training camp. How'd texans decide to handle the shaw watching. Who is not expected to be there in one form or another. We just don't know how that will shake out whether he'll be put on commissioner's exempt list whether the team will issue him an excused absence whether he'll be disciplined with he'll be clear we don't know how that's going to turn out but once we get past the july fifteenth deadline for franchise players to sign long-term deals than the focus will shift to the quarterbacks and then once can't begins in late july the focus will shift to the pro football hall of fame and wants it shifts to the pro football hall of fame inductees. This year was selected last year. Is bill kaur who spent much of the pandemic working with the reporter. Michael holly to write his book hardened steel and bill was kind enough to give us some time and some tremendous insight into his life but before we get to build cower. Few things wanna tell you about i first off the. Nba playoffs are in full. Swing and who better to give you all the insider. Nba information than the wounds bound. Creator himself adrian wootton ascii host of the wounds..

"Week. We have the us open. And i come back to father's day again because of all the father's day gifts that my family could give me. There's nothing that. I want more than the winning golfer at the us open for a weekly pool. I have an idea of whom you pick not gonna share. It don't want anyone else in. This pool are thirty people in the pool. I don't want anyone knowing our pick. And so this has been a torturous process picking each week but this golf pool man fancy golf i got into fancy basketball and it kind of took over my life and i live eat. Breathe that and now. It's fancy golf so we go from football season into fancy basketball too. Fancy golf to life fantasy and does it have me got my attention love that so. That's my father's day wish at somehow. Which i asked him to do because i was so torn that week. And he said victor. I said victor half really. He said yeah. So i turned. Victor alvin and i walked collin morikawa and patrick canley the two guys that i was going to pick wind up in a playoff for the final win and i cannot tell you how that ruined my weekend so we do not want this weekend ruin this special weekend room when we want the right golfer and so that's what we're rooting for. We're ready for tj olson to get back home and we're rooting for our team to make the right pick. We'll see whether we can work that. "And into kansas city in my run their united seven seven coordinators in my first seven years. Not exactly the way you to wanna draw it up. But but an opportunity to play for a ton of coaches a lotta great minds. yeah so so lucky been around. there's a lot of ways they've get it done Learned a little bit. I think from from all them look better. Rogers let's try your broadcasting skills. What's your take on that situation and how it's gonna play out right now. Yeah i mean. I think it's it's so crazy that it's gotten to this to where we are. I think without a doubt. I think it's inexcusable. That the organization. Let this point Here you have a is given you sixteen years his entire career to you. He's one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time arguably the greatest statistical quarterback of all time you're on the doorstep of the super bowl and you don't communicate with him and he obviously doesn't feel wanted there and you go ahead and draft a quarterback in the first round and it appears that he had no idea that was coming. That wasn't communicated to him. I i just don't know how it's not so much. What they did is really they did it. And i think So much is how you treat people and the respect. I just don't know how that all wasn't if you knew that was potentially a place you're going and taking taking you know quarterback how that's all not ironed out with aaron prior to the decision and if it's not you potentially don't make it Here's a guy that's a multi. Mvp still playing at a crazy high level. And i think you gotta take that into account oftentimes you know the personnel guys in know looking at prospects this prospects and they're looking down the line but you also it's a it is about the people and i i. I do think you gotta gotta look at how you treat them. The messaging The the communication. I still go back to that. I mean you got to communicate you gotta be able to go talk to you guys and make sure everything was was good to go before you pull the trigger on something like that. And that's what everybody in the building. Not just aaron. I mean i think you gotta go out of your way to over communicate that and make sure everybody's on the same page when the chiefs draft to patrick mahomes. You knew in advance that was coming. Yeah absolutely that had been communicated the entire offseason leading up to that the entire offseason by multiple multiple people. Everybody in the personnel department coach. Reid constantly or multiple phone calls about that happening happened with with when we drafted cap with coach. Harbaugh i i knew i knew invent well in advance of that. What the team was thinking the route they were gonna go And i think that makes a difference it it does. I mean honestly. I i in any case had gone out of your way to obviously make let him know how you how the team feels about about how important he is Ended up. potentially they're thinking this route and and obviously explaining their thinking Clearly obviously from an outside looking in the you know that didn't that didn't happen didn't take place before we get to overdose. What are your thoughts..

They're probably all wrong. I would probably lean toward the other way just when you look at it on his face. Andy dalton is a lesser player mitchell. Trubisky we saw that with the qbr. Starting left tackle eric fisher and right tackle jeff schwartz. These two are key players on this offensive line. We know that they didn't play in the super bowl. Obviously eric fisher tours achilles right before so he was unable to play in it and jeff fisher was really working hard. Excuse me jeff. Shorts was really working hard to come back and he said on instagram himself that he was going to be one hundred percent ready to go for this upcoming season. We talked last week all about this week. Being a really difficult week we called it. A massacre at least one coach told me that. And that's what it is. Look at what. Marcus Spears, meaning times Laura Rutledge, four. P. M. Eastern daily on ESPN. Dan. Thanks for joining us. Did the Cowboys have a great day? Yesterday? The Cowboys did not Jack Prescott did Jack press cop Doc Prescott. His family did. But this is a big time swing and miss for the Cowboys. I think that they took a calculated risk. You know, they tried to be patient and patient and patient and didn't want to do something like the Rams and the Eagles did. But man, that is a ton of money to give that Prescott What should the expectation Level B for cowboy fans this year? This year. It Luis, You're stuck in second round of the playoffs. Sniffing your NFC championship game, You know, like here's Here's. This is what my comment is with this, and it's the old saying too much is given much is expected. This is why I was very cautious of giving Dak Prescott a ton of money or second most quarterback money. It's going to impact your football team and we can't snow sit here and say, Well, he's really good. But the expectation status, saying the expectations have to be elevated. Not only individually Hey, what are left tackles out. We still have to win the game on the road against the New York Jets because they stink or when we don't have a Mark Cooper. We still got to play good at the position because you're supposed to be And a difference maker. When it comes to the finances. It's a bad division. I still have to wait to see what happens in Washington at the quarterback spot. If they got a quarterback that I thought was a good player arrived. Dallas Cowboys Reach Multi-Year Deal With Star Quarterback Dak Prescott

"Salary cabin number for two thousand and twenty one is going to be twenty two point two million dollars all right now. Head dak prescott. In franchise tag again this will happen in a procedural sense but had to cow tried to go at this with dak prescott on the franchise tag for the two thousand and twenty one season. We've talked about this a number of times. That value would have been thirty. Seven point seven million dollars so the fact that the cow is now have him onto the books. We're talking about the value that is on the books in the books. However you want to look at the books whether they're e books or physical books whatever the case may be that value is now twenty two point two million dollars now. I know that we have all said some things about the dallas cowboys but they are not complete dummies. They surely budgeted for the franchise tag value. Because let's be honest. They came about twenty four hours. We think you know. Close to having the actually placed the franchise tag and maybe carried out with that prescott. So the cowboys have room for the franchise tag at the very least so you look at that quake matt that adam schefter was kind enough to do for you. That is fifteen point. Five million dollars that the dallas cowboys suddenly have because they've got this long term deal with that prescott. This is something that we've been saying for two years now. If you do this you can. You can kick this down the road. You can prorate it you can extended you can whatever term you want to put on it. You can spread the impact of the deal out of the signing bonus of the overall guaranteed money out over the lives of the contract so it doesn't hit you all at once. That's the one killer about the franchise tag is that it is fully and completely guaranteed in franchise tag is a one year deal so the value of it last year and dak prescott was on the tag for thirty one point. Four million dollars. The two thousand twenty dallas cowboys had to absorb that value all at once and they would have had to have done it again. Here in two thousand and twenty one but because they have adjusted that they now have fifteen and a half million dollars that they were seemingly budgeting for dak prescott that now they can apply to different areas. Maybe it is a safety. Maybe it's a defensive end. Maybe it's a defensive tackle. Maybe it's you know an offensive tackle. But they want swing tackled death whatever the case may be. We know that the cowboys obviously hold the tenth overall. Pick in the draft. They could go a number of different directions there. They wanna cornerback kayla farther patrick's retain do wanna take one of the tackles and rashawn slater as all this is. This is setting up and this is an important thing. I want you to hear me here and watch me here. You cannot waste this money. If dallas cowboys the whole point and getting this done with thac prescott besides obviously establishing having the best player on your team for the foreseeable future the point in doing this is to alleviate the salary cap space now. And i don't like the term when now if you watch us often you know that but you look state of the nfc east. It is by sudha. I mean the philadelphia. Eagles are a disaster. The new york giants doping daniel jones is legitimate. The washington football team has a great team but is void of the most important position of the game and a quarterback. Maybe they'd get somebody this cycle as we all expect quarterbacks to change teams at a higher rate than usual but the case in point is at the dallas cowboys are now. We're going to see this all day on tuesday by the way and we'll talk about it of course but they're going to be overwhelming favorites to win the nfc streit and you think about the conference that they plan is really a contender in the nfc. And i mean that with all due respect to the reigning champion tampa bay buccaneers. But you've got the bucks you've got the green bay packers and then who scares you. May maybe the rams you believe in matthew stafford but the point is thinking about the afc. I mean the. Afc has the bills and the ravens and the chiefs and the titans and the steelers and the browns. I mean you could go. A number of different ways. Did the colts have carson. Wentz ends up getting his act together and so the cowboys play in the weakest division in the weaker conference and so now they have this opportunity to really kind of take their future in the here and now they have fifteen and a half million dollars that they weren't necessarily planning on having use it and if they don't use it it is all for not so i mean we are all imploring the dallas cowboys to ultimately use this salary cap space. This is a very very very luxurious gift. That they now have been afforded that they didn't previously have so shattered of course to the dallas cowboys. Let's see here let's move. I'm i wanna talk of course about the bonus the dak prescott because well. It's stupid large. I mean it's amazing. Dak prescott has now the largest signing bonus in the nfl. You look at joe flacco. Once upon a time. Got forty million. Dollars matt ryan forty six and a half. Remember if you're on the fence about this value. We've talked about this before as well. Matt ryan became the first quarterback in nfl history to average over. He had thirty but to average at least thirty million dollars per year with his new contract that he signed with the atlanta falcons in two thousand and eighteen. That was three years ago. Dak prescott signed a four six year. Deal whatever you wanna call it. That was three years ago. They matt ryan signed that he was the first quarterback to hit the thirty million dollars a year. Mark prescott just hit forty but the reality and we've been saying this forever is that there are so many deals coming around the bend. Josh allens gotta get paid. Lamar jackson's gotta get paid. Baker mayfield's got to get paid extra calories. He's going to get paid the year after that. It's going to be time for joe burrow to finally get paid and when all of those players get paid this forty million dollars a year. Mark the dak prescott got this one hundred twenty six million dollar. Total guaranteed is sixty six million dollar signing bonus all these things that are currently the top of the nfl. The most in nfl history. That's the verbiage in determining that you're hearing associated with this and it's all literally true but it's all going to get pushed down because all of these players on this list. Joe flacco matt ryan matthew stafford at fifty million signing bonus. Aaron rodgers fifty. Seven and a half russell wilson not going to be a dallas cowboy now by the way sixty five million dollars. Dak prescott topped that all of these quarterbacks in all likelihood we'll top that that's the reality of the nfl things are always moving in one direction. It is up

Washington releases Alex Smith following quarterback's Comeback Player of the Year season

"Quickly. I have some news that has just come in from adam. Schefters twitter feed. And it's not a surprise but the washington football team has released alex smith. Who was this year's choice for the nfl's comeback player of the year overwhelmingly. So he has been released. They save almost fifteen million dollars cap space so in an off season. Where does shawn watson might be available. Dak prescott might be available. Russell wilson might be available louis. How interested do you think teams will be alex smith as he becomes available now. I think alex is a tremendous mentor. I think alex would be a tremendous bridge quarterback at this point in time these people are going to really try and connect the dots between him in chicago given his familiarity with matt nagy and that system that they run in chicago like it was in kansas city. I don't think that's a that's the option that they're looking for but look. I have nothing but infinite. Respect for alex smith at any team would be better served having him in their in their quarterback room for sure.

Bill Barnwell Breaks Down NFL Quarterback Moves

"So bill. We gave you do the math a whole month away from this podcast before our dependency bio chemically kicked back in so i just hope the last four weeks have been everything that you personally needed. Pablo got on many vacations. I turned around my life after six months of just staying watching football now. Bill barn wells weekly column on. Espn plus and he hosts the bill. Barnwell show podcast realistically. I have done something that few human beings have accomplished. I managed to get one pack of moments from nba. top shot. yeah. We share that same addiction. You are far deeper into the game than me. I realized over the weekend. I just want there to be an nfl top shot. Because i feel like that's going to happen right. It has to. i mean. Imagine the things you could do. You could send somebody that colts fake punt from years ago or or if you wanted to try some of your friends. Perhaps you could send the russell wilson interception from the nfl top shot to a certain person with the initials m used to host the show. Yeah just randomly picking in that example in those initials absolutely but bill. We dragged you back here. Speaking of a certain quarterback who threw a certain interception emotionally terrorized ours. Because this is an especially dramatic. Nfl offseason. they're all these big name. Quarterbacks who want out of these relationships that seemed from a distance at least pretty broken and russell wilson and the seahawks. I need to ask you about that. I because i know russ isn't feeling respected by head coach. Pete carroll reporting. I know that carol wants to revoke all of his cooking privileges. We've heard now. Russell wilson like storming out of meetings which is kind of funny to imagine like door very lightly slamming so this particular soap opera. What is all of it. Feel like to you much ado about nothing really. I mean i just i. Just don't buy russell wilson drama. I go back to his contract. Negotiations this is the same player in the same agent. Who wants imply that he would leave football in the middle of these negotiations entering the final year of his deal to try professional baseball. Where russell wilson once for the iraqis and the organization he hit to twenty eight in the low minors before returning to college football. It was not a realistic threat. But if that way does he want the seahawks to give him more helpful on the offensive line which has been sort of the crux of his public complaints. Yeah i do believe that. And i think that the seahawks could benefit from giving him more help. They relied on russell wilson to run his way out of sacks and free pressures from unblock players which has worked for that stretch buddies also taken a ton of hits cuss russell. Wilson plays the way he plays. He is going to take a ton of sacks regardless of how good his protection is the best way honestly pablo to get him. Hitless frequently would be to run the ball more. Which is the exact thing. Russell wilson was trying to get the seahawks do lasso last offseason. So there is something here but i very much doubt that leads to a trade. My favorite thing about this new cycle i think is that russell wilson has relayed via his wrapped. Adam schefter that he is not demanding a trade but if he were there are these four specific teams that he'd like to go to the bears. The cowboys the saints. The raiders does any of that make sense to you know not at all i mean the classic russell wilson tropez that ciara was going to pick teams him in new york in los angeles which this is the opposite that list even the teams he chose are so strange. Maybe you'd argue that. He chose teams with great offensive. Lions triumph of the seahawks. But the trade doesn't really add up the same. Stu have agreed offensive line. But they're like sixty five million dollars over the salary cap. The cowboys have a great line. Whenever everyone's healthy but they also have back prescott. that's not gonna work either the bears. I don't understand. They don't have a great line or any cap space. That one makes no sense to me on either. Level the raiders. Maybe are the most interesting and plausible candidate of the bunch with a great line and some cap space to work with. But when i think about jon. Gruden as raiders coach. He wants quarterbacks to do exactly what jon gruden wants on every single play. I don't think any if it really adds up to meaningful trae dialogue. I don't think there's going to be a conversation between the seahawks and another team about trying to make a trade for russell wilson work but this is twenty twenty one anything is possible

Houston Texans president Jamey Rootes resigning after 20 years with franchise

"Lot of focus on what's been going on in Houston this off season. Wednesday. We learned team President James Roots, resigns ESPN Insider Adam Schefter today their president, Jamie Roots, resigned, effective immediately, and I think any time there's any news with the Houston Texans People want to know. How does this impact or read out with two Shaun watching, and I think the issue here is that there are people in that organization in and around the league who have questions about the direction of that franchise. Jamie Roots clearly was one of them. He was a part of the search process that basically blacked him out. Discounted and ignored the words of the search firm that the organization paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for and in the end, when with Nicolas Ariel, who obviously is a qualified candidate, no issue with Nick Osario, it's the way the organization ran the search and ultimately moved in the end. I think Jamie roots is uncomfortable with that he was uncomfortable with the direction of the franchise. Ultimately, after 20 years with the organization in which he made all their big business decisions, he decided to resign from his post, which I think is a reflection off the way that some people in that organization and some people around the league view that spot right now,

Carson Wentz would prefer to leave Philadelphia Eagles, but team is not looking to trade him, per report

"This is the saga that we've been covering forever right carson. Wentz coming off terrible year. You know that he got benched. You'll see all the numbers and it was just awful but when they made the choice to fire the coach and bring in frank. Reich's assistant nick serianni. We figured well at the end of that is coming back in philly. Adam schefter yesterday said maybe not so fast wants. Leave the franchise. That's why the trade still employ. This is a real and this was made up and just because he would like to be moved doesn't mean he will be if i had to guess i would guess he is traded. That'd be my guess. Okay at some point this off season but again. they're not just going to train them just. They're not looking to get rid of him. They're not shefty. I shefty speech. The world listens and dan. Orlovsky we've not had you on this yet today. What is your reaction to this idea that it seems at least from the outside like the eagles have probably done just about everything he might have wanted and he still wants out agree with them. Schefter i think carson wentz wants away from philadelphia for a long time. People thought well he wants away. From doug peterson i think he wants to wait from the city. I think he wants away. From the organization. Greenie do speak so loudly. I need not hear what you say. And we live in a time frame and society where it's the easiest time ever to make some form of statement and carson had two opportunities to do that his first head coach in the. Nfl was fired. He had the opportunity to post something on twitter. Post something on instagram. Saying you're my. I said coach ever in the nfl while it didn't work out the way we wanted to for the long run. I'm forever thankful for our time together. Well then we move on and they hire a head coach. Nick serianni another opportunity to make some form of statement some form of. I'm looking forward to the future. New new beginnings fresh start excited to work with you and nothing for those two reasons. I'm sitting back and going carson. Wentz doesn't want to be in philadelphia. Maybe it wasn't as tight to doug peterson and it is tied to the organization and what has transpired over the past couple of weeks past couple of months. I can tell you this. I had a coach call me last week and spend twenty minutes on the phone with me asking about what my thoughts were with carson. Wentz the good and the bad why. It went south this past season because they've got a high level of interest in them and i think two teams. That should be calling our indy in chicago. Both of them have a win. Now defenses and both of them have some form of a tie in the past with carson wentz being frank reich and indian john d. filipo in chicago so i agree with this Shefty i think it's more likely. He gets traded than not.

Are Raiders plotting to trade Derek Carr, pursue Deshaun Watson?

"According to a report out of las vegas. The raiders are taking calls on quarterback derek. Carr it's suggested in the report that it could potentially be the beginning of a three team trade to get to shawn watson in a raiders. Uniform shannon vegas. Try and trade for sean top. Five top seven quarterback. I think you should be in the running for watson. Skip there something that's been on my mind and the bother me last week. I called you the night before and told you that has some information about about jon. L. came on the show and they're about six thirty top of the show. I said to shawn watson my sources tell me shawn watson has ashby the texans for trade and this is not. This is just being broke but this could ask a couple of weeks ago now. Adam schefter reported twenty minutes out to me that show watson to ask for trade basically saying that he's breaking the news which at and i said what transpired that he wants to go to the jets. He have a fondness for robert solid. Everybody keeps saying jason this and that so what they're trying to do. They're trying to add egg pool pork to a hamburger. That i've already made is still a hamburger. Youth and economists tried to add to the story back to this absolutely skilled. I don't this report came from chris. Simms yes okay. What transpired skill. And you said this yesterday. When he was when he was talking to the press conference the player he said the player of the the new england syria away to new caserio said the player yes he must have realized how it sounded his head because he started saying shaw desha. It's too late. You everything off his thing and our to our for everything to my agent day google level but anyway skill yes they should skip. I just got always got the impression. That jon gruden wasn't as far the derek carr. I don't know what it is. I could be totally wrong but it. Just something about yeah. He's good but i don't really know if he can take me to where i need to go. I am making ten million dollars. The i do have one hundred dollar contract. And we haven't been to the play. So i'm as you can be viewed as a failure skill for thirty million dollars ain't got nothing to show for it. And there's a lot of have to do with his defense. They print his lands. Twenty fourth and thirtieth last three years are good bradley the off season he so you look at it. They're waller. it's a top three tight end. They got josh jacobs. Who made the pro bowl again. If i'm not mistaken hillary rodham. He nice receiving corps offensive. Line is solid. Yeah john was. It will be a major player for them. And in this offense again. It's the west coast system skip. It'd be foolish not to try

Chiefs place Robinson, Kilgore on COVID-19 list

"This coming down. Just moments ago. Adam schefter saying the chiefs placing center daniel kilgore and wide receiver demarcus robinson on the reserve covid nineteen list due to close contact. You see diana receive their. She's been covering the chiefs all week long diana. They didn't address this. Kobe news because it came up right at the end of media day. But you were talking to all of them throughout so tell us what you learned. Yeah well. I gotta give a lot of credit to this. Kansas city chiefs team who are in kansas city missouri. Twelve hundred miles away from where the super bowl action is all going down starting today and these guys were having a lot of fun they were bringing the energy this virtual so it's very hard to have a lot of energy and to have fun but they did a really good job laura. Let's start with the most important thing i learned. And that's andy. Reid is going to have a double cheeseburger waiting for him at the end of the game. If they win if you remember he had one last year. That was the meal he ate after. They want kidding. That's not the most important thing but something that did stand out with. Patrick mahomes was talking about. When tom brady met up with him after the afc championship game. Two years ago remember the chiefs lost at arrowhead and our jeff jolly was actually down on the ground and he was the one who spotted this. He saw tom. Brady walk over to a security guard and asked to talk to. Patrick mahomes the security guard. A little surprise like okay. I'll figure it out for you. Well he was able to find him a little room in the equipment room. And that's when they brought patrick in radiant ham had a conversation. Take a listen to what patrick learned about it for me. I think it was important because it showed that. I was doing things the right way as a young quarterback in this leading You you gotta go in he or early trying to put it in the time and the work But you don't really know until you get to that that that spot of where you wanna be at Losing an afc championship game. Obviously i didn't get to the super bowl. But then him tell me anything kind of just just saying that he respected what i was doing and how i was planning filming the type of person that i was A kind of best on me to go any new better In order to get the super bowl which we did last year. And i'll just trying to keep improving and keep getting better every single day. We asked andy read about it. He said he didn't enter. Didn't see the conversation. But he said he heard about and he was obviously very grateful. That brady took that time to talk to his young quarterback but re did make a point With the reporters today to say that they are so happy. There in missouri no distractions very few media obligations. It's all football. Football football are
