"Some whiffs. You know who took a lot of swings? Adam Dunn. He struck out a lot too, you know? Rob, do you ever have to take a lot of swings? I have to ask you though, because I used to be so obsessed with will people watch the Oscars. And I kind of gave up on that last year. Do you think people are curious about this right now? Like, especially since everything everyone wants is such a juggernaut, like, is it gonna be a good year for the show? I know, Jimmy's hosting and everything, but I'm genuinely curious about what he's going to do well. I think a year after the Will Smith slap, I think, is a huge draw for this to see what at least what Jimmy does in the first 15 minutes. And I haven't asked them, but there's no way it's not going to come up. You know, and then you have some pretty big stars in the audience and some at least movies that people saw this year for sure. And top guns is the most popular movie, non comic book movie in a while. Except for one other movie. Avatar the way of water. Which is also nominated. Right. And then I think a lot of people saw, I was surprised by how many people in my life saw triangle sadness and really liked it. Yeah, yeah. You told me it has no chance of winning because it's too sad and too unhappy, but and something that has no chance whatsoever, it just people love that movie. It's a really miserable doom laden ending about how no matter who gets money in power, they will be corrupted. Like that's a kind of the opposite of what people in Hollywood want to hear. So I'm not surprised this nominated, though, won the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival and that director is very celebrated Rubin Austin. But to me, if it's not everything everyone wants, no matter what it is, if it's not that movie, it's going to be shocking at the end of the show. Not a great movie here, but a super weird and memorable movie year. Including something. And some big swings and misses from some really famous directors, including your guy, although you're in the Babylon, I've he killed it. I went to a screening on Saturday night of the movie at the arrow in Santa Monica, sold out Babylon hat. People were chanting after the movie. You saw Babylon again? Yeah, I did. It was awesome. How many times have you seen it? Three times. That's fucking insane. I couldn't get through one time. I honestly had the time of my life. I thought it was so fun. Your case that it's about how Hollywood has always been this awful is the only compelling case I've heard for that movie. It would have made it so fun to be nominated with that being the message, but unfortunately Hollywood was like, we're too smart for that. We're not nominating you for this. I'd almost seems like he made that movie so that eventually it could play at the new Beverly cinema with the 58 people who fucking loved it. I talked to him on the podcast and I kind of kept trying to push him that way. I was like, were you trying to make just like a fuck you cult movie? Like you can tell me it's okay. Like if you just wanted to make a movie for like the real weirdos and he wouldn't take the bait, but I think in his heart of hearts, that's what he was doing. His next one will be a very successful, relatively normal movie. I agree. Something more mainstream. Because one too many you become weird guy. And I know you do, but every once in a while, weird guy, it's like, you know, one for him, one for us. It could be like three for them one for us, but yeah, how do you be Scorsese, I think, is the thing. How do you continue to make things that seem really weird and transgressive, but for whatever reason you build a strong following, the people at a certain point just have to call you a genius. That's what these guys have to figure out how to do now as they go to the next phase. Yeah, then Scorsese is most fun phase was when he was like, fuck it, made the departing. Ripped off that whole run. We might be talking about the best movie phase, but we could be talking about him this time next year because he has big movies probably premiering this summer. Killers of the flower movie. Can't wait. All right, listen to Sean and the big picture for all the deep dive stuff good to have you as always. Thanks, Bill. All right, that's it for the podcast. "Starting the day. Here comes the sun one time. Gather the day is always brought you by panini America the official trading cards of the Dan Patrick show. Chris and Georgia joins us this morning, hi, Chris. Hey, happy holidays. I tweeted it to him the other day. But I'm going with that. Adam Dunn of the show. He has one 87, 200 strikeout the year, but there's 48 home runs or glorious. I'm going with fritzi. Danny. All right, well, thank you, Chris. So fritzi, you're the Adam Dunn of this show. You strike out a lot, but you do hit home runs. That's fair. I think that's a fair depiction. You're going to strike out a couple hundred times and then you're going to hit 40 bombs, not get on base, not do much of anything else. A lot of strikeouts. Voting is still open until the final hour of the program, most valuable least valuable. Most improved least improved. Ed in North Carolina, hi Ed, what's on your mind? Hi, Dan. Hey. Earlier this week, with the stay in your lane callback and what's coming out of the Giants commanders game and the controversy as to whether the referee should or should not help the wide receiver come up on the line. I've got a question for you in the day and we're all painfully aware you need to stay in your lane when it comes to Green Day, but I'm wondering as to what topic that danet need to stay in their lane in on recognizing Todd likely has probably ten or 20 of them. All right. Well, thank you, Ed for that contribution. The things that you guys don't know enough about, that's a hell of a lot. Yeah, where do we start? I mean, I know a lot about music. I just said I wasn't a big Green Day fan. Which actually is wrong. Apparently. And then, as most great journalists do, I did some research by going to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So I could see the Green Day exhibit and learn more about Billy Joe and the rest of the green days. Yes. So to decide on this, which would be the if you're playing jeopardy, the category that came up where you're like, oh, you're like, I'm in trouble here. Sports or other. You know, something you don't know a lot about. Yeah. It's a lot of things. So we don't know a lot about. Like when we're doing sports jeopardy, there are some categories right. Oh yes, yes. But then once in a while, there'd be a hockey category in hockey history is not my strong point. That's where I would, I don't think I do well. Yes, Todd. I'd say for me, geography, politics would be just among many things where I'd be like, Marvin, is there a category that you'd have a tough time with? 70 soccer. Oh, very niche. Niche. Outside a pillow. I'm not big on it. And Pelé is not in good shape, I think he said some organ failure here, so an update earlier this morning. Seat and you got the category that you might get roughed up on? I've got 10 million of them. Well, one that stands sports. Right. That's one. You can start right there. It's that little Achilles heel. Yeah. Two more hours to go. JJ watt will join us. Okay, do we bring up good ass dudes? Do we bring up where we made fun of him the other day? Right? We have to, don't we? We do. Okay. JJ watt, JJ. "Him. What kind of, I mean, look, I don't want to insult recent work. But like, what kind of person's in person any right? I don't know. Just asking that question. I'm guessing Greg blossom is actually Greg blaster. Probably. It's not an impostor, but right to bring up a little less confident. Anyway, I mentioned that because I got to do an oral history, this is actually the first genuine oral history I've done. I enjoy oral histories I've written fake oral histories, but this was like a real one that I wrote about the SNL sketch baseball dreams come true, which came out 25 years ago today as we're speaking on Tuesday, it aired on December 13th, 1997, and this was the sketch that featured Chris kattan and Will Ferrell and Helen Hunt who was hosting that week and Chris kattan was playing a kid in bed, who just wants to be a baseball player. And then as soon as his mom puts him to bed and leaves the room, a multitude of baseball players just parade out of his closet one after the other and gradually just convince him not to be a baseball player by being so off putting and drunk and loud and smoking and hitting on his mom, et cetera and they're 15 major leaguers in that sketch and I talked to most of them and it turns out that the sketch was actually written by brand name writers Robert carlock and Adam McKay, who have gone on to write and showrun and direct many series and movies that you have heard of. And before that, they combined to write this baseball dreams sketch. And so I got to talk to most of the 8 of the 15 players and I talked to Todd zeal. I talked to the biggest name in the skit is Scott Roland and I did not get to talk to him, but talk to cliff Floyd. David Howard Gregg Jeffries Jeff sero, Mark Waller's Marty cordova, Russ Davis, and tad zeal along with Carla and the agent who put them all together because I had always wondered having seen the sketch like why these players it's like 15 players from ten different teams like all different skill levels and ages and experience levels and I always wondered how did these guys get in the sketch like did they write the sketch that called for 15 baseball players and they were just like let's put the call out any baseball players who happened to be in New York this week just show up on the Saturday live set and we'll put you in a sketch or what? No, it turns out they've actually had a common bond and they were part of the same agency and the sketch was sort of reverse engineered because the agent said, hey, I've got all these baseball players in town this week. You want to rate a sketch for them and they did. So it's kind of a wild story in the players all enjoyed reminiscing about it as did the people involved in the creation. So I'll link to that on the show page, but always fun when you get to remember some guys and then also call them up and talk to them. So people who remember that sketch font, may enjoy the piece. All right, one thing I neglected to mention, by the way, those giant starting pitchers signings were good news for me in the annual free agent contracts over under draft. I took the over on raw stripling on MLB trade rumors predicted 18 million. He got 25, and I took the under on the predicted 52 million for Shawn menia, he got 25 two, so that's a large lump sum added to my total, I am 6 for 6 so far. And to mention two things about two catchers first, if the brewers can help William Contreras improve his defense the way they seem to help Omar valez when he got to Milwaukee, then this could be an even bigger fleecing and second, Meg mentioned soon and his strikeouts among the low strikeout guardians, someone in the stat blast channel of our Discord group for Patreon supporters asked what the greatest share of a team strikeouts over the course of a single season is, and listener Asian brave, who previously conducted the Mike Trout Twitter emoji research, he did a little check and he found that that would be Jimmy Fox who accounted for 119 of 465 Red Sox strikeouts in 1936 that is 25.6%. That seems to be the record since 1914, and the others are also early Vince DiMaggio 1938, and then, of course, the great Gorman Thomas in 1979 and 1980, up around 23% Vince DiMaggio again in 1943, Chet Ross in 1940, dolf chameleon 1941 Reggie Jackson 1982, Gorman Thomas again rob deer, another brewer, Ralph kiner, et cetera. I think when there were fewer strikeouts in general, it was easier for an outlier to make up a higher percentage of team K as in recent seasons, he found Adam Dunn would be the king 2012 White Sox. He was 18.5% of their strikeouts. It's the likely candidates the usual suspects done Chris Davis Mark Reynolds, et cetera might be tough for zeni no to have a really impressive rate though, even on the guardians in this high strikeout era, and as a catcher who's only going to get into so many games and played appearances. Also, the most recent addition of the Bill James handbook has a list of 300 win candidates. They're not many of them. They give Justin Verlander a 29% chance of getting there. The only other pitchers they put on the list are Max Scherzer at 5% Garrett Cole 4% Clayton Kershaw 3% Adam Wainwright 3%, 3% seems too high for those guys in my opinion, certainly for Wainwright, 1% for Zach cranky, less than 1% for Johnny cueto and those are the only pitchers who even make the list. So yeah, not looking great for 300 win candidates. However, looking great for effectively wild secret Santa, I tease this last time and now it is officially open. Zack went close, a listener organizes this every year and he has opened it up again a little later than usual, so everyone get your sign ups in, you can sign up between now and December 21st and then you can send out your secret Santa gift when you were matched at that point. "It was Tyrone Taylor last June 28th in the 8th inning he did that and actually Rafael Devers and Tommy Edmund did it last year too, but that has happened 70 times this century. So to recap, it is not that rare to make two outs in an inning. It is quite rare to be responsible for all three via a double play and it is pretty rare to make consecutive multiple outs in anything either first and second or second and third. All right. And now I have gotten to the end of this. I see that I'm not quite done. If I was done, I got another one here. I just cleaned it out. I might as well. I'm just going for the completionist here. And Reddit user, Twitter legend, except this was on Reddit, our effectively wowed subreddit, R slash effectively wild, noted one of the recent podcast discussing all time strikeout leaders in specifically Adam Dunn reminded me of something from when I was in high school. We were reds fans in Cincinnati, and we would discuss what we had dubbed the Adam Dunn cycle. The Adam Duncan is pretty simple and is obviously composed of four distinct outcomes. Strikeout swinging, strikeout looking, walk, and home run. My specific question is, if there's a way to look this up and see if Adam Dunn is one of, if not the most prolific players to hit for this made up, Adam Dunn cycle, or if it should actually be named after someone else. Are there any other players who have a unique style that could lend their names to another version of the cycle? Now, effectively, while wiki power user Raymond Chen reminded me that back on episode 1722 through 1725, we've discussed some alternate cycles so you could go back and check some of those out, but the Adam Dunn cycle specifically. Now, I guess this is not completely comprehensive because we probably don't have the distinction between looking and swinging, strikeout for all of baseball history, although it does go back a bit because we know that Babe Ruth had 8 of them on record, at least. So this is confirmed Adam Dunn cycles. Adam Dunn had 9 of them. And that is not nearly the most actually. We have pitched by pitch data at least completely going back to 1988. So I would guess that there is some bias toward recent years and also because they've just been more struck out. I guess more of all the true outcomes in general. But the atom done cycle really should be the Jim tomi cycle. Ah. So Jim tomi did this 26 times. A swing strikeout of looking strike out a walk and a dinger in the same game. 26 times, no one else has had even half that many confirmed. Wow. Adam Duncan's or Jim tomi cycles if we are renaming it here. So Curtis granderson is second with 12. A rod had 11, Chris Davis, Mark McGwire and just an Upton, have ten, and then done is tied at 9 with bonds, Sammy Sosa, Frank Thomas, and then at 8, you have Carlos Beltran, Bobby buns, Jose canseco, Carlos Delgado, Ryan Howard, Mike Trout, and Babe Ruth, who may have had more in actuality. But yeah, we got to rename this, I think it's not the Adam Dunn cycle. It's the Jim tomi cycle. Wow, well, you learned something new every time you do tends to have less. 11. Actually.

"It's Mark Reynolds, it's Adam Dunn. It's Davis, it's yuan Mankato. It's Joey Gallo, Chris Carter, Stanton, judge, et cetera. It's all players from this era. But Reggie Jackson still standing alone there and no one really challenging him, which you would think is odd because he would think, well, maybe players are having better conditioning, maybe they're having more longevity, and then there's just so many more strikeouts in the game now that you would think someone would be making run at this thing, if not having already shouldered Reggie aside. Yeah, it is kind of remarkable. I mean, the guys who have been around long enough to sort of be within range from a longevity perspective, right? The pool holes is you're right that there is for him specifically he was not much of a strikeout guy and then you can imagine a shift in the profile that would be tolerated over time, right? So like the guys who are posting big strikeout rates, but are still productive and whose production we are perhaps able to better appreciate because of advanced stats, like maybe those guys are just far enough away, that's a weird way of describing that. They're sort of early enough in their careers that they aren't threatening yet. Right? Does that make sense? But it is surprising that it would be so secure that it would feel so doubled relative to when Reggie was playing. So it's odd. I mean, it's not easy to be an extreme strikeout machine and still play for a really long time. So he was an outlier in that respect, but even so you would think that it would have overcome it with pitchers, for instance, you might be surprised that say no one has struck out 21 in a game yet, but of course you have pictures not going as deep into games. So there's a change in picture usage there that counterbalances the increase in strikeout rate, whereas with hitters, you don't get that as much. I mean, maybe there are a few more rest days here and there in teams being more conscious of that. But there's also, I guess, not more games relative to when Reggie was playing necessarily, but to earlier eras, so that's something too. So it's odd. I mean, I guess maybe trout could potentially get there. If he stays good for a really long time, he's like in a 150th place and he just is like a hair more than halfway to Reggie at this point. So it's possible if he were to play for ten more years and maybe strike out more as time went on, but you wouldn't say that any individual player like I think the odds are pretty decent that someone who's active right now would take over that top spot. But it's hard to point to a presumptive person who will definitely do that. Yeah, it's a strange, it's a strange thing. I just like how I know we've talked a lot about the sort of era of baseball that we're in where it's like this sort of tasteless stretch that we seem to be in. Did you know how long Robbie Grossman's streak was working? No. Yeah, it was like he had an error. And that's the only reason I knew about it. It was like a lot of games played without an error. And anyway, I was just thinking about how audit is that we don't have more of those. We've talked a lot about it. So I remain on the hunt. I remain on the hunt for a chase, right? You want to sweat your judge needs to keep on keeping. Because you want to have the fever. You know, we need something to talk about in September. Tomi was close, tomi got within 50 ks of Reggie, and Adam Dunn would have blown him away if he had had the same length career. He retired too soon, but he was just a little more than 200 behind Reggie and he didn't play after his age 34 season. So he was the one you might have banked down, but I guess he had old player skills as a young player and not enough skills as an old player. So it's tough. I think it will be broken at some point, unlike a lot of baseball records that it's hard to imagine how they could be broken without some radical change in the game, but I think this one will get broken. It's surprising that it hasn't happened already. Yeah, it's just surprising. Maybe Gallo, I don't know if gala will have. This is the thing. Like, you know, some of those guys seemed like they had, they had either curtailed the strikeout tendency enough to prolong their careers or like the other stuff they were doing was so superlative and had sort of stabilized such that we were going to see them play for a really long time, but like Callum hasn't been good for like a year now. Right, I know. Yeah, he actually has fewer than a thousand career strikeouts. I know. How is that true? It seems like he's had a thousand this season, but 977 straight cuts with gala you're always surprised that he has so few of things unless they're home runs. It's like wet, he only has that many sac flies or he has that many singles. He's just so extreme. But you think that he would have even more, but I guess he hasn't played that much. He's had fewer than 3000 career plate appearances. So yeah, trout's a better bet to do it than he is by far I think. Right. And so it's just, I get why it is, it is a trickier needle to thread than you might expect it to be, right? But it is surprising that it is. It's still a surprisingly tricky needle to thread. You know, who are you? Let's see. So like since 2012, yeah, it's like Christy's doesn't play baseball anymore. Called Goldschmidt. 1428 Upton crews had a bunch right, but Upton's pretty close to done. Cruz is probably pretty close to dun Stanton. Like, okay, Harper, trout, Martinez, I didn't do those quite an order, but you know, like, man, Christie has had a lot of strikeouts. Yes, you did. Chris he was triggered, Ben, did you know how much Chris it was struck up? I knew it in an intellectual way, but not in a specific way, you know? If that makes sense. Struck out a tad too much. Yeah, it might be, it might have been too much, you know? It might have just been too much. And like, of course, you know, that's just looking at the raw strikeout.

"Rbi's but sal peres. Has you know taken a big lead over him right now. i'd say ten. Rbi lead in runs batted in and then has also tied him in home runs So to me. This is one of the one of the more bizarre stories in sort of interesting and fun I know jeff. You have some thoughts on. Maybe how it might not be fun or you're getting major five from him related to certain todd hundley season nineteen ninety six for the mets. Wow what all is said was no a couple of decades ago. You saw this kind of thing. This was like a huge siren alarm a potential pd user. Meaning that we you know like twenty five homers fifty home runs like we did see this a few times whether was a brady anderson or bret boone or or todd hundley and and most of those guys generally turned down to bp hobby lopez. We should point out. Hobby lopez hit forty three home runs as a catcher in two thousand and three and his previous career. High hit hit over thirty once but aside from that he was kind of a low to mid twenties at best type of guy so there is precedent for catchers like that. You know kind of having these crazy years during that heyday of the the nineties in the early two thousands rep but to be clear. That point was not me saying that. I think so peres is i. I love rose evidence of that and we would never see he's had a fine career I think there are other factors. Could explain a recent sort of sort of universe Which we've talked about ad nauseam where guys are waiting for more power so there's You know in in terms of approach and all that kind of thing but it is The do it at thirty one is odd to do it as a catcher. But it's a guy who's been a good hitter in been a sort of it's been an ulcer with seven times now. It's kind of remarkable career in a world series. Mvp he's really had a really good career and is not a guy who has talked about at all. So i'm for one. I'm very happy for them. And also what's otani ever done that guys so one dimensional. I mean come on. You've done this as a pitcher try doing it as a catcher one trick pony that adam dunn but yeah i mean sal peres yeah. This is kind of like the the crowning individual season. I think You know if you'd asked him winning the world series probably ranks higher Visual and winning world series..

"That every single time. I think one of the more interesting things. The rights all of fame. They've created they've created a situation here. And i don't think this is unintentional in two thousand. Sixteen pete rose went by himself. They do this every two years. And honestly i. I should've looked this up. I don't know if they've announced if they're going to do a hall of fame induction next year since marty was supposed to be two thousand twenty or if they're going to go in two years but sixteen they put rosenbach himself eighteen. They had a multi member class. That included adam dunn and fred norman and dave bristol to manage the reds right before sparky anderson and then twenty twenty martin went in and you know it was interesting because for years they would have these three or four member classes. And you're kinda like all right. Well who's gonna make it now. I think what it's done is it's slowed down the induction process. And now you've got some guys who have become eligible by the time we do this again. Guys like bronson arroyo or brandon phillips or aaron. Harangue jay bruce players jay. Bruce might be a little while because he just retired this year. But you know guys were a part of this team. Maybe scott rolen gets in players. Were a part of the team in the early. two thousand. Ten's we'll see what happens. Todd frazier. does he resumed his big league career. Does he plays somewhere next year. Todd go and i mean there's going to be a list of candidates here so i hope badly makes the reds hall of fame the next time there's a class and what got me thinking about. This is listening to the radio. This season. chris. Welch chris welch has been doing reds game since i was in high school and had a relatively unremarkable pitching career as a red. I think he's done a really nice job on the radio this year with tommy. When he's been asked on television he legitimately is one of the best baseball analysts. There is legitimately been doing reds game since nineteen ninety literally since i was in high school in nineteen ninety-three worked with different play.

Young threads the needle and right between two defenders with tarallo and standing at the goal line he catches a pass. That wins a wildcard game. The forty niners events and he famously cries so do a hard time catching the ball early and went on to become one of the most prolific one of the best four or five wide receiver. Who ever played the game in the hall of fame and never should have had to wait. So you can recover from this and you can recover from it quite early as a general rule as we talk about. Jamaa chases career am. I worried that down the road. He's going to be plagued by drops. No not really. I trust the player. I trust the coaching staff. I just i trust the guy's career to develop to the point that drops are no longer an issue and as we talk about rookies. We have to talk about the entirety of their careers. Right i worried tamar chase is going to drop a bunch of passes over the course of his hopefully lengthy. Nfl career. no more. So than i'm worried about my daughter sucking her film when she's seven but in the short term behavior i would like to stop. Yeah yes yes. Is it behavior. I would like to sort of wean him off of of course. I'm sure he would agree. Is it something that in the short term. I would not happen yes. Is it something that in the short term. We will work to ensure that it doesn't happen. Yes so i feel about my kids sucker thumb so much more chase trump and football's it will probably no longer be a thing down. The road is a thing now. Yes is going to be a thing in three weeks. Well could be and if it is. You're being very very reasonable. If hey it's it's third and three bengals down four. They've got to move the sticks here. Ball's coming tomorrow chase. Is he going to catch it. If it's throwing the tyler boyd. I feel like the answer is gonna be yes. If it's thrown to auden tate. I feel like the answer is going to be yes. If it's thrown a t higgins. I feel like the answer is going to be yes. No great receiver goes without dropping passes. But would you march as right now. Well that's not where we want to be. It's not borough once his teammate to be. It's not words march as wants himself to be. Does it mean he's a bust of pick come on doesn't mean he's not going to be a very good. Nfl player of course not. Is it worth paying attention to now. Yeah is it something you hope. It's rectified of course. Is it something that as it happens. It sort of drives you nuts. Yeah said something that could get in the way of this team having the kind of early success. That almost has to have yes. The good news. Is i just mentioned to you. Other names that they could throw the ball to in critical situations and the good news is the team is pretty loaded. Wide receiver and good news is dramatic. Chase is nfl. Career is in its infancy. It's very early infancy. He still sucking up. The question is is not going to be a problem. Down the road and i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say it won't be the case down the road. I'm not worried about it big picture but week one. Yes yes it. Until you see a repeated pattern of the drops no longer being thing. Should it concern you. It's fair to say yes a couple minutes away from four o'clock five one three seven four nine fifteen thirty and eight six six seven zero two three seven seven six by the way some insight as to what Joseph of size dealing with from an injury standpoint with the injury expert will carol coming up at four to thirty three and have some fun with some reds math. And what has been a few minutes. On what i wrote today about joey votto as well because there are two great things about watching his current resurgence. And i'll tell you what those are coming up over the next hour plus brennaman and jones baseball but a number of years ago. We wanted to do a throwback thursday interview with greg vaughn. We did a bunch of them that year including some that. I recently found this week from seven years ago and we never couldn't make it happen. I'm glad the today we will. Greg vaughn will be a great american ballpark on friday along with dozens of former reds playing in a game to help celebrate the reds hall of fame induction of marty. Brennaman greg vaughn. His one year in. Cincinnati was extraordinarily memorable and He is scheduled to join us next on. Espn fifteen thirty. Cincinnati sports station. This is dave lapham and you're listening to the home of the bengals. Espn fifteen thirty about six. After four minute late this is espn. Fifteen hundred small egger. Thank you for listening for show. Hopefully your week is off to a great start. You know how this works right. Whenever two people are on television arguing about something that matters to our audience you know what we have to do right clip that we have to share it with you yet to hear the two people arguing and then we have to respond and vilnai's whoever has the position in the argument between the two people on tv that we don't like so we'll do that coming up at about fifteen minutes and there is a common denominator when you look at Reds legends. And joey votto is at this stage in his career. I think it's fair to say a reds legend and having a resurgent aged thirty seven season by the way is gonna turn thirty eight here in just a couple of weeks but three -ality is joey. Votto has on his resume. One glaring hole that all the other reds legends for the most part have. We'll spend some time on that coming up in just about thirty five minutes. Plus we have brennaman and jones on baseball. And if you're wondering about this. Joseph of injury with treatment should be lie ahead. will it really cost season. Our buddy will carol. The injury expert is scheduled to join us in just about thirty minutes looking forward to that. We are supposed to be joined by greg. Vaughn the one thousand nine hundred nine red. Who is going to be a great american ballpark this weekend on saturday. Excuse me on friday. They're doing this. This should be. There should be pretty cool. It is is supposed to be the largest gathering of reds alumni ever and They're obviously going to have the induction ceremony honoring marty brennaman and then right around eight forty eight forty five. They will have team bench verses team larkin. It'll be at great american ballpark tickets. Just a fifteen dollars. All the tickets are in the lower bowl. So you'll have a chance to get a really good seat. You'll also get a ticket for the reds pirates game on monday september the twentieth and a voucher to visit the reds hall of fame museum. The gates will open at six thirty and should be a fun night. Also going to be a rossi's fireworks show immediately following the game. Barry larkin's going to be managing one of the teams. "If you were running down the first base on a bang, bang, play in the ball got away. You had to turn right and go back to first base, because if you turned left into the field of play or made any indication you were turning towards second base. You are fair game. Jonathan India noticed Christian Yelich did that. And he walked over with a big grin on his face, and he tag Christian Yelich out, yelling with nothing got ejected, but he had turned in towards second base like he might be going when the ball got away, and the Reds got a huge out and that is a high baseball IQ, if not literally play. Many have said on ESPN last night, for example, that Winker had a great six weeks of the season, but the next six weeks were pretty awful. Which Winker will we see in the second half? I think that's a fair question. I think at 1.1 of the weekend he was eight for his last 58. He had slumped from 3 60 down to 306 at the time. I think he's down to three water in that range right now, Look, there's a the back of the baseball card says he's a career to 80 hitter. I think he's better than that, because he's still in his prime, and he's getting better. He wasn't going to hit 36. State. It becomes a matter of where you settle in at and what adjustments you make. Well, you know this when you were atomic funeral home, Legal, just a D. You started to own that league and they started to adjust and not giving your fat pitch for you as the hitter you were you major adjustments. Let's see if Jesse does. Obviously you spoke to Gordon veteran Oh recently now as far as the second half of the season And I'm looking at all the injuries and all the difficulties and the schedule looks a little bit favorable to the Reds. How big are the three games Friday, Saturday and Sunday? If the red sweep them they're literally tied for first place. If they get swept. It's the wrong direction. They're like, What? Seven games out. How big are these three games here in Cincinnati? If they beat them up in Milwaukee, beat them up here in the Queen City. How big are these three games? That was Louis? They're big, but after the three they're still going to be 69 games left and the other they played 90 to this point, so three this weekend takes it down Butler maps Since we'll have 69 games remaining plenty of time. I'd like to think there will be 120,000 people in three games at Great American Ball Park. The town is going to be up for grabs, but I think this team still needs help. I think this team is his in so many ways, they 500 team that has shown the ability to get up above that, but also dropped below it. I think they kind of flow. Around in the ocean, looking for a little bit of help in terms of a life preserver of relief pitchers, and that's on the front office. And and the owner right now, Lance, would you take your wife and Children and walk around? Smell Park at 11 o'clock at night? Well, they're older now. Um, uh Then we did. Now we go hang out at other places. How's that for a politically correct answer. And if you hear a big bang at night A big bang. Is that fireworks? Or is it shots fired? And Pleasantville also known as independence? You assume it's fireworks? Correct? Oh, yeah, and independence. It is fireworks. There's no What if you're in Westwood Wanted Hills Otr. The people that live there need individuals like you to speak up and speak out about the violence in the inner city, which has taken so many lives. Do you support the gun show loophole, and here, I thought we'd eventually get to a Mount Rushmore. Question that I was all that's kind of what's coming about coming. Now you're going to your next where it's going to be about shot. Spotter on what I think a shot spotter. What do you think about that? Since you brought it up? I think it's an amazing technology. How about that if the Reds had a Mount Rushmore No, I was going to ask you the question If the race had a Mount Rushmore, a home run hitters in honor of home run Derby tonight, if you were to assemble a Mount Rushmore of Reds home run hitters. Who would they be? Well, I think you've got a good number one with Johnny bench, Okay. You got to go number two with Frank Robinson. Oh, good one. Yes. Gotta go. Number three. George Foster. Mm. Oh, this is now This is going to be interesting, because who are you going to leave out? Well, home run hitters. I'm going with Ted Kaczynski a clue of where Adam Dunn. Well, Adam Dunn. I never liked that guy and I like Ted Kaczynski. Adam Dunn was after me constantly, Since I question is fumbling skills and left field. I had to go down and apologize to Adam Dunn. I thought I was going to kill me. So Adam Dunn is not my favorite. So I love clothes. Sooskee. I respect Johnny bench. I love George Foster the great number 15 and Frank Robinson, I think is the one in my youth that I my favorite player at that point was made of pence and I love Vada Pinson, the great number 28, but I got to go with Foster bench. And then Robinson and big clue, because I also saw big clues. Grave I get to Heaven Cemetery. Can I tell you that story? Oh, well, you're going to either way, So when you go in, take a ride at sunny Kim's grave Go right is in one of those slots and one of those boxes. You put the casket in the boxes like seven stories tall, maybe about 10 across about four. Up from the bottom. I saw Ted Kaczynski's name I said a Hail Mary forum made across on the on his plaque. So I like Ted class Sooskee. In fact, when I die will you come to gate to heaven Cemetery and not urinate on my grave but rather show a little respect to the great American. I'm going to be right next to Bab Castellini and fell Castellini. Maybe I'll do a remote there. Remote I I will not participate. Alright last, like, Give me the Mount Rushmore all time all time, Uh, Royals basketball players all time. Well, what is hell? You know you are. You're a true Jim. Because no matter how much and you know how much I like to prepare, no matter how much I prepare, plan and plot out, there's always a curve ball that you're going to toss me that throws this in a complete utter Chaos. Don't change the subject. Royals all time. Mount Rushmore. Who are they? All right. I'm gonna give you Oscar Robertson, okay? I'm going to give you a winner of an All Star game MVP, and he still owns the car. Adrian Smith. How about that one? I was there for the All Star game. Gordon veteran knows Cousin let us in the back door of the All Star game. I sat there. In fact, I stood next to Jerry West and Elgin Baylor. But I was there for that. Adrian Smith. Okay, Next up. How about I take Jerry Lucas? No question about that from Middletown, Ohio, A number number four. Jack Twyman, exactly. I had I had big Oh Twyman, Jerry Lucas and Wayne Embry. That's not bad. Right, and you got a Bob Boozer or Bucky Buckhorn backer Tom Thacker. In fact, I still I still see factor around. He's around doing charity events. Lastly, when I have you on They're around August 1st right after the trade deadline. Well, Castellanos and Winker still be Reds. They will be, yes. Are the Reds, adding or subtracting? They will add. I don't know that it will be a major added, I'm guessing it'll be more like an Archie Bradley ad from a year ago, but they will add. "adam dunn" Discussed on Newsradio 700 WLW
"One of the things Hank Aaron was most proud of is he never struck out 100 times in the season to put that in perspective. Looking back at Major League Baseball stats 2020. I am looking at it again in a season where they played what, like 55 games, something. 60 years, Miguel Sanoh of Milwaukee shook out 90 times 90 times in 53 games. And hang here and never struck out 101 162 games or whatever. It was a somewhat in 23 years. Yeah. Never once e mean looked in theirs. I'm going down. There is 30 players who struck out more than 60 times last year in a season of 53 58 60 games. Somebody correct me, but it was way over 100 Times, Adam Dunn. One of the year's he played for the Reds struck out I want to say 200. That sounds strong, but somebody correct me and give me the number on that because I just made this is top of mind. I didn't have time to look it up, but he really I mean, it was either in the river or he was or nothing. Child will look this up. Keep going here. It's just amount of Stephen getting mad at Casey. Well then, so there's whole That's the way baseball has become, and we've talked about this during baseball season. It's like, you know, small ball as they used to call it is over now. Here it is in 2012. He struck out 222 times. That can't be right. That's right. I do remember that. Wow, that is awesome. Had 41 homers, though. There's been a lot of money. Well, yeah. And I told you the story about him being on the dog patrol. What was that one Oh, really? I didn't know you told, you know. Can you tell my mirror off here? Don't tell them on the air. Okay? I mean, you know, I guess the statute of limitations is over with. I don't know, but There was I forget what event was was opening day. Are. No. I was an opening day, but I forget what there was. We were having a party of some nature in the morning show, which was kind of, as you know, was fairly often. So the data and then why, Right? And, um So there was Ah Yeager shots being served and this and that any other And he was in the studio and that's when I worked with Suzette Spencer, the former penthouse, lady e. I mean, duh, adorable little thing and And so he's flirting with her and the Yeager's going around. He's like, Yeah, I do a couple of Yeager's and boost boost that this is nine in the morning. And So there was a day game that there was a 12. They know those businessman specials. Never 12 30 game and the first one of the first pitch is is, uh, Lying over his head. He it was I mean, he was stung and he ran in at it. And it cleared his head by 15 ft Something you see, I don't literally game right. Can't judge ball correct? So my been either the Jaeger or is that Spencer? I'm going to go bad eyesight could have been the four shots yet. Very tip for breakfast. That's awesome. That's great. You're sitting and watching that later. Okay? It's funny because I happen to be. I was going to go to that game that day anyway. And I'm like, Wow, What do we do that fault? Ah, but In other news, I thought of you when I saw this story rock This happened in Turkey Assemble There was this. This guy had to go to a con taken by ambulance to the hospital. And The dog, his dog born JOC own Jack. Ran after the ambulance all the way to the hospital. And then the guy was in the hospital for Two weeks. I think Yeah, and, uh, The dog would come to the hospital every day. And lay down outside the door. And then go back home at night. And really the end. Like the guy's daughter. Somebody tried to take the dog home, but the dog would go back to the hospital and just sit there outside the door. The awesome man not say I'm told you're the best. I was thinking about you with the like Elvis. What? Elvis, do that for you. One of the hospital wasn't too far away. You might so that was that the Japanese dog is it Hachiko was. It's like some famous dog who's same deal like so his master, Um You know, he had the workers somewhere across the pants every day. He would walk him. The dog would walk down the train station. He'd get on the train. Okay. Then he would go off to work and dog would go back home exactly four o'clock. When he got out, he would be sitting there waiting for him, and they built a whole statue. But just about loyalty and You know what I've seen? Where dog dogs like Forrest Gump. When the kids they will go down to the bus stop with a kid. And watch the kid get on the bus and the either just sit there until the end of the day, or they just mill about more less in their mind. They know there's a bus is due any time so they go back down to the end of the driveway and wait for the bus. Yeah. And that's that's cool is that and there's even t get even sadder stories when You know, like there's the Army Armed Forces Veterans thing, You know, they have the dogs and then you know they passed away. And the dogs are like sitting there like at their finger underneath. The casket won't move all that sort of stuff. They know, man. Not now. You know if I could get me a dog like that I get a dog. But I know my daughter with me. Hey, you like more you were dead. Do the dog? Yeah. What do you think me like? You better know Hell, no. She would be spoiling that Don't go rotten should be given a pork chops and all that kind of crab, letting us sleep in the bed better than she feeds the dollar be sleeping between us. He goes over when we got there. Yeah, man. Well, it's fried. That's all you need to know. Coming up here in a little bit. We have John Batteries. Channel nine. Don't waste your money. Don't waste your money, and he'll teach you how not to do that. And again, a brick repeating Marty Brennaman at 4 30. And now the news news radio 700 w l W News..

Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio
When you think of Ichiro's career you think hits and steals, but don't forget about his incredible arm
"You've heard Ichiro reported his he's going to retire after this game today that they're playing this morning in Japan. Now, he has three thousand hits I did some research. Thirty two players have three thousand hits twenty-seven have five hundred home runs. If you're a player, which which feet would you rather achieve five hundred home runs or three thousand hits in today's game. Five hundred home runs. Three thousand hits is nice. But I don't know if people really look at that is that's an incredible it is an incredible feat. I don't know of today's baseball generation looks at that and says boy he had ten consecutive seasons of two hundred hits or more along with Pete Rose. You also stole five hundred basis. I don't think that we look at though, they're not glamour numbers anymore stolen, bases hits. And it used to be. But now, I think it would be home runs. If I could have five hundred home runs as opposed to three thousand hits today twenty years ago. I'm taking the three thousand hits factor in sabermetrics with that opinion because obviously on base percentage has become in some people's mind more important than batting average. You remind me of sabermetrics, I never think of sabermetrics the game. I mean, I don't know if it changed it in a good way. I think there's so many stance with baseball that you're you're you're drunk with stats. You drowned in those stats homerun, very simple. There's nothing to factor in with that. It's just you hit a home run. What if back in the day, they decided to walk counts for a hit which would have been very reasonable. Measure, in fact, probably more reasonable than not counting for. I don't know why they decided not if they did that then you would look at Adam Dunn is I'm sorry. The former White Sox slugger as as valuables in each row. It was just a random decision statistically, not to count walks. Yeah. I mean, you count points for free throws on base percentage. I know that that's a big deal. But it makes you well you keep saying Adam Dunn. One of the great players because I look at on base percentage. I just think a guy who strikes out one hundred eighty times to two hundred times in a season. You're not even putting the ball into play. How can that guy? Be that valuable. Okay. He walks hits home runs or strikes out. That's not somebody. I wanted my lineup. Yeah. Paulie? He didn't really have a great base percentage. No. He did. He did not walk a lot. We do. We ran the numbers a little bit each came into the league at twenty seven. And he was he won MVP as a rookie and rookie of the year. If he would come in just two seasons earlier at twenty-five with how good he was you could tack on another almost five hundred hits he'd be sixth all-time he'd be over thirty five hundred hits. If he just came in at age twenty five twenty seven. Yeah. Now, he's a great player didn't win. Anything was baseball. You can be selfish in a team sport. Because it's you at the plate. Now, there are other mitigating factors in there. But still you go to the plate. It's just you. And he's playing in right field. He was very good outfielder. Great arm. I don't know how many Gold Gloves, but he won a few Gold Gloves out there, but three thousand hits five hundred stolen bases in first. Ballot hall of Famer he came into the league with the Seattle. Mariners magin if he would've came into the league with the New York Yankees with how he came out of the gate. Oh, one through nine. He was through two thousand ten all star every year top twenty MVP every year. Imagine if you did all that with the Yankees where he'd be looked at
