Steve Krakauer Has the Receipts on All That Ails the “Acela Media”

"The link and I've been tweeting out various excerpts of the book as I read it. And I find it's really different from the usual standard beat up on the media stuff that we get from the conservative media. And I written one of those books myself like 20 years ago. And it's an old tune unless you play some new notes and you play some new notes by doing these deep dive interviews that are largely reproduced intact. How is the reaction to the book among your media colleagues, Steve? I've been pleasantly surprised. I have to say, I think, yes, as you mentioned, and when I set out to write this book, and I've been covering the media off and on really for a dozen or so years, I started as a media reporter. But more recently, I've been very critical of the press through a newsletter that I write called fourth watch. But when I set to do the book, I wanted to really do a deep dive, as you mentioned. And I'm always critical of the press. People who write books or people who just write articles and everyone is behind the anonymous veil, right? And everyone is just a TV insider, dishing dirt on someone. So every person I talk to and it did take a lot of convincing 26 people on the record, people from Fox News, people from The New York Times, MSNBC, and beyond who really put their own self on the line. I mean, today is day and age, it does take a level of bravery to put your name to things, especially when you're being critical of your own colleagues in the press. So I'm glad to see that the reaction has been good as well. I think that I'm hoping it starts a conversation. I don't have all the answers. But I do think we need to press to get better. We need a strong press. But at the same time, if the press doesn't listen, if the rest doesn't adjust to some of the ideas that I have, I'd rather the public understand what happened. The truth about what really happened over these last 5 to 7 years. So it very least we could all get on the same page together as a country. Uncovered

We're told have rejected an offer on the table, while three other unions are still negotiating the head of Friday's national strike deadline. We're also learning that the railroads say they have no intention of locking out rail workers if they don't reach a new contract agreement by Friday. That's what the association of American railroads is telling CNBC this morning. In the meantime, the U.S. labor secretary is trying to strike a last minute deal to head off a work stoppage. If that strike does happen, it would cause serious damage to the American economy. In the past, Congress has acted to prevent railroad strikes and end them by passing bills that impose terms on the parties. But even as The White House says a railroad work stoppage would be unacceptable, press secretary karine Jean Pierre says now is not the time for lawmakers to intervene. "All long distance Amtrak trains are canceled to avoid possible passenger disruptions. Most travel within the Amtrak owned northeast corridor that connects Boston to D.C. and related branch lines would not be affected. Acela would operate a full schedule on only a small number of northeast regional departures would be impacted. This has all because of the potential for a nationwide rails of freight rail strike that could go into effect Friday morning starting at 1201. We'll have more on that coming up soon, but let's tell you about what's going on on Amtrak as Stella would operate a full schedule and only a small number of northeast regional departures would be impacted as we mentioned. The cancellations affecting the D.C. area include the palmetto line that goes from D.C. to Miami. The auto train from lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida, the Crescent does the service from D.C. to New Orleans. The capital limited from D.C. to Chicago and the cardinal from New York to D.C. to Chicago. So we'll keep you up to date on what's going on with Amtrak in connection with the potential strike. And there are some new developments in the labor dispute involving some of those unions. Members of one have rejected of tentative deal with the largest freight railroads while three other unions are still negotiating ahead of the deadline. Meantime, the labor secretary is now aiming to strike a last minute deal to head off a work stoppage, which would cause serious damage to the American economy. And i wanna go get points his autograph or i want to go john autograph. Walk over the hollered wake. They'll be and that's something that you know. You don't get anyplace else i think. That's huge my rating scale for races is a real simple passionate and like sunday. It's i think was an absolute ass. My rating scale free at the end of the day is if this was the first day you ever experienced. Nhra do wanna come back and if there was anybody sunday in sunol that had never been to west. Yeah then thanks for giving us a shot try bird-watching or whatever you know. We had incredible racing. We had drama. Tim wilkerson the explosion was and you got a little bit of everything. And then when the fact that the last two races day the combined total margin of victory was five thousands of the sex. I mean the top you. Electric cars racetracks and talk to a five hundred twenty five miles an hour. There are two inches apart the finish. And if that's not something you're excited about we ain't got nothing and talked about it over and over. I do joke. Acela does a podcast and radio. Do every tuesday and one of the things that i've talked about an time if you've never been to. Nhra events just cannot experience. If you last one was twenty five years ago come back and against because it has really changed and one of the things that we've got so much better at this packaging especially on a sunday. When i started doing this. I can't remember ever leaving the racetrack before seven. Thirty eight nine because the days were so long and drawn out and now partially because of television partially because you realize it fans don't want to be as they don't wanna be twelve hours ratio. They wanna come out. They wanna see what they wanna see. They wanna get a t shirt and get a cheeseburger to this and then they want to be able to get on with their day so unless we have weather issues other. We are always done by five o'clock often by forks so you can come out the show clips clips right along. You still got time to go down and get your autograph. See this stuff. But nobody has access like an ira does and one of the other things. I think it's very bad. Nhra because we're the only sport opens stadiums for the general public. You can't take your streetcar. Daytona on tuesday. Make sense but you can take your street carcinoma on saturday and go race down exactly the same and be a part of in kind of feel what it's like and like nobody else and i was for years i was very competitive softball and one of the things. We never got to go to diamondback stadium and play softball just because our professional teams out downstate and empty. Let's use it now. But i don't care if you drive a minivan if you want to go to indianapolis at lucas oil raceway indianapolis and drive down the same very strict that the us national spin held on for fifty five years every wednesday night while wednesday have fun and so that's another thing that i think makes the nature unique. Our stadiums are open to the public when the professionals aren't and to your point it doesn't have to be one of those things where because you like one or one does different than the other that urine salting anybody. Everybody offers something different and nhra is very unique in what you guys offer. That doesn't mean you're insulting what we're doing over here on the nascar side and you saying nascar reminds me of what i wanted to bring up because you mentioned this as you said earlier when i came to visit you in the booth at cinema that you have a brian france story. So if you don't mind sharing. I think people will get a kick out of that Yeah early nineties. When i don't know how many people didn't ask our side. No when brian france got out of school and was gonna learn. The business is dad. Wanted to learn literally from the ground up. Nascar held the lease on tucson raceway park which was the three mile dirt oil and to my knowledge. I think it was the only saturday night race. Track that nascar. I ac- actually was in control. But they wanted brian to learn everything so he was a general manager at the track. Their announcer at the time was not ever going to be in the hall of fame. I a lot of friends that race circle are just the local saturday night special guests and so i was out there one night and i'm watching the thing and i didn't know brian french. I i mean. I just going out hanging out and at the end of the night i wouldn't ask somebody you know. Hey kind of who runs the place. And i was young and probably and so they introduce utah and i said you need to hire me. I said because you're announcer is not doing. I do you and i i'll tell you what i said. I'll come out next saturday night and all work for free. I'll work with him. Was and i should at the end of the night. If you want to tell me to get lost fine. He said fair enough but went out the next saturday night and worked with the guy's name was time worked with him and brian came up. I don't think we're done with heat. Races came up and said. Don't leave the knife off. At the end of the night i went down. Saturday said you're higher at the time. I was just diddy. Nhra sta so. I can't be here every week but when again again and so For a couple of years. I was brian francis. Saturday night short-track. Now during that tenure they paved the track so went from august ashfall. And then you need a memory for this but remember the winter. Each series ideal actually tucson raceway park and that was under bryan's when he was the manager out there. I was driving down. I actually went out. Started totting mike. Joy would never remember this news in the booth. I was just moved far but there was anybody baker and hanging out with the guys that with brian france saturday night. Short records love it. I love how. Somehow i always find a way to circle things to nascar. I love nascar. Dave moody is one of my best friends. When i oh yeah when i'm back in his neck of the woods get together and have lunch and we'll slots and just you know it's funny. How the sports are a drastically different as they can possibly be. But there's still so much compensate. It's guys with cars trying to get away with things and trying to win races and know the dave and i. We really didn't get to know each other. Until i don't know five six eight years ago but like the first time we went out and had launched we just kind of clicked and now he's a very very good friend and i know a lot of over the nascar road donate stewart and i are pretty good friends now. Even before being leo were engaged we had a relationship there. And i think when i was working on the dodge bros where the factory don pro-style game at time and i was working with him and we got a new piece of equipment that somebody had to go to school to learn how to use. I wasn't there. That basically like just me so i went to nascar. Is evan hands ray. Ever engine shop. He was running. The doctor came on the nascar and it was really funny. Because i got there and it was whatever it was monday morning and i got there and i knew his receptionist who was married one group if i walk into. Hey hey gathering meetings okay. And so i had ray ever and ham this kind of in passing and so the meeting broke up raking. Hey ray yeah and then loop teens who was big christ. Now, if that is not what you have planned for your budget, there are other things that you can do. And one um, that is Really one of the best and easiest is the Spartan mosquito eradicate. Er, I found them these eradicate ear's through a friend of mine who has a pond on his property. And he said it was the only way they could. They could go out and enjoy the season was with ease. Eradicate ear's. They're like little tubes and then They're filled with a dry Substance on the inside, You add water, shake it up, Put it out in the tree. They're attracted to that They get pulled down in it, And that's the end of that. And so you get to inside a package. For $30. It'll last you 90 days, so it's It's very reasonable and it's very effective. So the Dyna traps are about 88 to 90% in the Spartan mosquito eradicate ear's 80 to 85% get a muted mosquitoes. Now, if that's still not And your budget. There are other things to do, too. And these other things are also great because you can take them with you. And those things are thermostat will there miss? L is a It is a trap. It's not a trap. It is a device that is a dead gives off a repellent and it has a fuel supply on the inside, so you don't have to plug it into electricity. You just put the fuel supply in and turn it on. Give it about 15 minutes in it will make a perimeter of about 15 to 18 ft around. So that's great for your patio. If you're going out camping or glamping, you can take this with you and get rid of the mosquitoes. Just turn it on. Give it about 15 minutes, and then you're ready to be outside and the patio therm Acela patio shields come in several different sizes. And, um I found this from Hunter and he said they would use these and they're deer blinds every year. So it's thermostat. Cell patio shield comes in a couple of different colors. You can get replacement fuel and replacement repellent now. Inside your house. Dina Trap has a little trap that goes that plugs in its electric and it's great for the kitchen and the bath, especially if you have fruit flies. Gnats. Mosquitoes may be have young Children that are constantly going in and out and leaving the door open. I don't care how many times you ask him to close the door. They just don't do you think So this Dinah trap plugs in it has a little sticky pads. It is the light attracts the flies and gnats and mosquitoes and then they get stuck to the sticky pad and you just throw it away. And then you can buy replacement sticky pads. It's It's really good. And the nice part about it is when you plug it in. You could turn it to the side so you don't take up both sockets on your plug. So that's really nice to now, Let's say you're going walking outside and you don't like using something that has deep in it or is has a very strong smell. Neither do I. But medulla makes a They call it natural. Insect and mosquito repellent. It does have lemongrass oil in it and just a hint of vanilla, and it's that hint of vanilla that makes it not smell so strong. It's really nice if you can put it on the most sensitive skin, so I give you have small Children and you worry about their skin being very sensitive to chemicals. This is all natural and I promise they won't have any problem with it. You can also use it on your pits. So like when it's really extreme mosquito season, my little Max likes to go for a walk. And so I'll put this on me and on him. I sprayed on my hands and put it on my arms and exposed areas and then I take what's left and I wipe it across him, and that keeps him from getting bit too. Now, if you are gonna have a party and maybe you have gotten some of these things, But like I told you, it'll take a week or so for these things to really kick in the diner trap the Spartan mosquito eradicate er. Now the patio shield will work immediately right away. But maybe you're having a party for all of outside in a patio shield. On Lee Kind of takes care of a small area like right where you are, so you can use mosquito beater that is a ready to use spray that you hook up to your hose. And you can spray it in your yard and it kills mosquitoes, flies and ticks. Now, it says it works for Up to four weeks. That's probably stretching it. Because the minute the heat sets in. It breaks these chemicals down. But if you're gonna have a party, so you're gonna have a party on Saturday night. Go out and spray your yard on Friday night and let it really take care of everything. And then also it dry so everybody can walk out in the grass and be fine and your pets too, And that will kill them Mosquitoes for your party. And then by that time when she get rid of that, a week later, you're eradicate er and you're dying to traps have really kicked in. But you say, But what? How about something else? I have something else to Maison Berget, Which is what we all know is Lambert J. They make a lamp that has a fragrance fuel in most of time. That's what we're talking about What it comes to Lambert. J is fragrance because it is one of the nicest ways to add fragrance to your house, and they have beautiful fragrance is well, they make what they called summer nights and summer nights. You can use outdoors on Lee to get rid of mosquitoes. But this is the nice part. It smells wonderful. It smells just.

Amtraks Sale on Sleeper Cars: COVID-19 Travel Solution?

"I love traveling by train. The sounds the scenery long distance train travel is almost undeniably romantic and yet. I almost always opt for airplanes in normal times. Train travel is just too time consuming for me and most average travelers, but of course we're not in normal times, and that's giving Amtrak and advantage over plane travel that it hasn't had in more than seventy years so rights Robert Clara and editor at Ad Week Clara unearthed a seventy four year old report produced by the Association of American railroads in a desperate bid to compete with convenience of flying. The report touted the solitude and comfort of the sleeping car over time of course that promotion failed. Until perhaps now once again in a new century for a new reason, Amtrak is making that same argument last week Amtrak, a two for one promotion, for its Roumat's tiny private compartments whose seats convert to upper and lower sleeping berths at night. Buy One ticket for a trip down the east coast or from Chicago to Los. Angeles and your companion can share your cozy for by seven foot space for free. Not Surprisingly Amtrak is promoting the affordable room at a great solution to cabin fever by staying isolated in your tiny train compartment. You can see the country without being pressed up against the flying masses. The ticket price includes linens, towels and meals which you can eat in the dining car. For! True social distancing have them delivered to your room at ticket. Holders can venture out into a big window observation lounge lounges at train stations, but must wear masks, and naturally Amtrak has stepped up its sanitizing procedures to tickets are available on many different lines like the California Zephyr which travels from the West Coast through the rocky mountains on its way to Chicago or take a different route out of Chicago, and travelled through Memphis on the way to the big easy on the city of New Orleans line. Comes no surprise that airlines are suffering because of covid nineteen with most people staying home, so to is Amtrak. The organization received a Billion Dollars of federal cares act funding to keep employees on the payroll through the end of September according to USA Today but on July Sixth Amtrak reduced the frequency of many lines and last month it warned employees of more doom and. And Gloom in October, it plans to cut service even more and Shrink the workforce by twenty percent. The company says it will cut staff through voluntary buyouts, early retirements and layoffs, if necessary. According to USA Today more than thirty, two million passengers climbed aboard an Amtrak Train and twenty nineteen, the paper reported, but Amtrak predicts it'll have half that ridership in twenty twenty one. Trying to boost sales, Amtrak is also cut many other ticket prices to the bone including tickets for the a Selah, it's fastest train on the ACELA. It'll cost you only sixty to seventy bucks to speed from Boston to new. York to Washington DC less than half the usual prize that deals good through the middle of September, according to ask traveler.

Trump administration to cancel federal funding of high-speed rail in California

"President Trump is demanding the state of California return, billions of dollars in federal funding for high speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco governor Gavin Newsom announced plans to scale back the project which will now run between Bakersfield Modesto. The governor says the president's demand is political retribution for California taking the lead in suing the Trump administration over his national emergency declaration. We get more from ABC's. David curly America remains behind much of the developed world when it comes to high speed trains. I mean, we talk about the Acela between Washington DC and New York, and and onward as being this high-speed train, and it's not fast compared to the rest of the world. So this is a major setback. This project was not managed correctly. Poor decisions were made, and it's going to hurt high-speed projects throughout the country. Another big one that's planned is in Texas. And this can't be good news for those folks. Amtrak is drawing up plans to adjust to the shifting realities of geographical growth and demand.
