Ghana buries former president Jerry Rawlings with honors
"We saw the white man out. Colonial power was as our enemies. But i think no not that. I think something that is worse than an enemy is a traitor. See crowds paying homage to jerry rawlings. As he lay in state at the accra international conference center this week have been passing coffin which contains multitudes africa's post colonial decades have furnished. Many leaders recalled occasionally with a shudder as brutal military dictators and a few others thought of more fondly as visionary democratic reformers. Jerry rawlings ghana's longest serving president was both rowling's died back on november twelfth age. Seventy three according to some reports of covid nineteen the delay until this week for the appropriate observances to be enacted. His state funeral is scheduled for wednesday january. Twenty seventh has been due to a number of factors the covid nineteen pandemic ghana's presidential and parliamentary election in december. Two thousand twenty and a subsequent squabble over. Who should be in charge of rolling send-off and implicitly his legacy it all got a bit unseemly. Some of rowling's old party threatening if their opponents then in government buried rowling's they dig him up and bury him again. Rowling's the son of a ghanaian mother and scottish father made his first grab for power in maine. Nine thousand nine hundred seventy nine. He was at the time a thirty one year old flight. Check Ride Turbulence - Preparing for the Check Ride
"Up walling. Hey bobby how are you. I'm good. This is a show that i think might blow off our top ten charts. Hopefully this is gonna be a new series that we're going to start doing every month called. Check ride turbulence. And that's a little bit of play on the words. Check ride and turbulence but these are going to be stories from flight school owner and a dp to make the check. Ride a little less bumpier to. We're gonna help people smooth those flights out and those check rides out And this week we're going to start with preparing for the check ride. And if you have check ride stories and that is you want us to do as part of this. Check rat turbulence every month show. Let us know this month is all about preparation for the check wally. I'm sure you've seen just about everything in your first four hundred and fifty check rides but on a scale of one to ten ten being the most prepared student that you've ever had that would have been me probably on the instruments. What would you say. The average level of preparation is for a check ride. I would say Somewhere around a seven so not bad right. Just a seventy percent is normally a failing grade right ryan so seven still not really really good right or professional pilots or people who wanna do something partake in something that could be dangerous. We want to shoot for better than seven. Yeah yeah good. I you know it's it it all goes to Preparation and at least with me I have an online scheduling system. If you if you book a check ride with me you're going to get a an email confirmation along with that email. Confirmation is going to be a letter It's the letter is is just over a page long and there's a lot of information on the ladder and if you use that letter. Basically as a checklist. You're gonna be in pretty good shape. I know several of the Other examiners here in houston use the same type of system. Where you you book it online and you'll get a confirmation What what i see is is the the m- farther out in advance that we can schedule a check ride and far farther out Before the check ride the student or the applicant is actually signed off in niagara. The better i would guess that. Probably fifty percent of applicants Before we even meet. I find some sort of missing something or other on the application the iraq application itself and it usually has to do with the flight times There's a little column off her class. Totals and it's Class totals and A lot of people miss that so Maybe it's a private pilot candidate. And they've got seven point nine hours of solo time and Or actually that'd be cross country. Let's say they got twelve hours of solo time. They should have in that class. Totals they should up twelve hours of of of single engine land. Pic time and a lot of times. They they missed. That and those are really easy things to fix. Because as i'm i'm sitting at home relaxing in the evening. I'm i'm looking a week ahead of time and i'm pulling up applications. I'm taking a look at things. And i'm i'm looking at the numbers on these applications and i see that it's real simple for me to go into my scheduling system and send you a text. Say i was looking at your application. I noticed she left out a column. I'm going to send it back to you right now and It's no big deal. It's no big deal. You know. I deal with akra daily I've i've dealt with it on on hundreds of applications and As a student pilot this may be your your second time to really deal with the i. Accra the first time being when you got your student pilot certificate. Now you're working towards your private and even the cfo is Extremely familiar with i acura. So i kind of know what things to look for. I'm looking for to meet the minimum requirements. Making sure there's three hours of inch talking about private. We're talking about parts sixty one Making sure there's three hours of instrument three hours a night time You know a lot of times you will see Then putting in the application that they have pic night landings which most of the time at this point The student pilot would not have that and Unless we're talking about Simulator time solo time plus dual time should equal total time so A lot of times. I'll see You know Tenth errors You know Twelve hours a solo time Fifty hours a dual time and total time of seventy two hours. Where would be sixty two hours so you know kind of make a A mental audit or a quick audit of the times to make sure they make sense. And again i would say probably forty five percent of the applications i yet before i ever even meet the applicant. i find some errors and we're able to fix that so that's probably the first thing and you know obviously if the application is done the day before sometimes it's not as easy to see those errors and then the morning of the check ride or the afternoon of the check. We're trying to fix these things. And i see the anxiety level on the applicant raising as they're dealing with this. They're they're thinking. Oh my gosh. I've made the examiner mad. Which isn't the case at all. I mean i just wanna get it right.
Just Say No to Free T-Shirts
"Do you ever buy t shirts at the thrift store I try not to. It's usually pain in the butt. Yeah I'm with you. I'm not like a big T shirt drifter but I'll pop into the t shirts section every now and then when I want to look for some graphic tees and I was there looking for some fun stuff to share for the April twelve months of thrifty prompt because the prompt is words and one of the easiest ways to incorporate. Words is to is to wear graphic tees. I was absolutely stunned by the number of t shirts on this rack. I'm like what is with our obsession with all of these t shirts. I'm thinking of the ones where you go to a festival and you buy a t-shirt right or go to like. I said a five K race or a local Chili Cook off or a bank event. Where they're giving away t shirts and pens like those are the t shirts I'm really thinking about. Not necessarily like a t shirt that like a plain white t or a plane grade V neck t that I would wear with jeans or something. I'm talking about like those other t-shirts that because they're producing such mass quantities. I don't think that they're going to be very high quality. I mean we literally shoot t shirts out of t shirt guns for crying out loud on my gosh. I never even thought of that before. But so true like every event we go to you get like a free t shirt and I don't think twice about it. I mean typically. I don't take one but that's mostly because of other reasons but I don't think about any environmental background. I agree with you so one night night. I came home for about thrift store. I was like I'm going to do some research on the environmental impact of these shirts. I really wondered what happens to all the T. shirts that don't sell like at this one thrift store. They had just back to back t shirts and I wondered like. There's no way that they're going to sell all of these like. Can you imagine all the other thrift stores that have all of these t shirts and so I found a lot of information on the environmental footprint of t shirts on the front end of the production? So things like the amount of water it takes to grow the cotton. The Chemicals Harmful Dies. The toxic waste is often dumped in local waterways. But not so much on the back end. So what happens when we've used these t shirts and were done with them and so I ended up on this instagram page called the or foundation and it's a US based nonprofit. That's been researching the secondhand clothing trade in Accra Ghana. For the last several years they have incredible stories on their instagram page and one of them was about the global waste. That single use t-shirts create. And I was like okay. That's interesting I've heard of single use plastic. But I've never really heard the term single use t-shirt before okay. So can we back up to did you rabbit hole. And how late were you up? I'm kind of embarrassed to say how we saw. I was up till three. But it's because I had diet coke at like seven with dinner and I'll be fine. I'll be fine museum to this now and I'm not. I love that you thought your immune to caffeine all of a sudden it just because you wanted to be but really like I feel like you thrive on this like this is just like something once you get excited about something diet. Coke is just like your your drug to like keep it going. It revs you up. Yeah all I need is a diet coke taste. Shoot me down a rabbit hole. We need to create a me like of Dina like swirling and in some cute dress like thrift ahead of course and then like holding a diet coke typing vigorously about t shirts and the environmental listed. T shirts like how? How Boring is that me? Oh my God we can have you like Like beer funnels. We'd heavy like funneling. Diet Cokes. So Anyway single-use t shirts are free or cheap t shirts you get. Things like racist sporting events business strategic retreats. Things like that and a lot of times. These shirts aren't met for long term use and there really isn't a big reuse resale market for them locally or globally and so they were saying on their instagram page. How a lot of these single use t shirts are a major contributor to global waist? Okay so this reminds me of like I'm GonNa Guess Two Thousand Sixteen because I really don't know because I'm not a sports person but it reminds me of like the first time I ever found out that when there's a big championship game of some sort. That two sets of shirts are printed so as soon as the game is over there. Are People outside ready to sell you the winning shirt so say two thousand sixteen calves one? They have the shirt ready as soon as the people. Walk Out of the stadium. And they go to purchase in there like all pumped up and they WANNA purchase this shirt that the cavs ones they wanna wear if they want to be proud but they also have like under the counter that the warriors won and so now they have to find a place to put. The warriors won t shirts. Like what is this part of the nonsense and what happens with these shirts now right. Yeah that's actually a really good point and I don't know enough about their process right like they have to be re purposed or reused. Somehow so I don't know if maybe they donate them or whatever ends up happening to them if they do end up in the donation stream at some point. These t shirts are probably going to end up probably in somebody else's landfill if not our landfill just to provide a little bit of context in a previous episode. We talked about the cycle of donated clothing typical cycle of donated clothing on. What happens to your stuff after you donate it to a traditional thrift store. And I'M GONNA RECAP THAT PROCESS very briefly. Just so you can get an idea of where the single use t shirts fall in this cycle. So you purchase something you wear it. You donate it to a traditional secondhand retail store like a goodwill or something and then they sort the item they put your clothes on the sales floor for purchase. If it's in good condition and then after a few weeks if it doesn't sell in some cases it ends up at like a last chance location so maybe at a thrift store outlet or something like that after a few weeks go by and still doesn't sell three things typically happen. Some items can be recycled into rags or installation. Some items will go to a landfill because they've reached the end of their life cycle. And that's just the reality of it. Then some items will often get exported to other markets and this is where their sole traders and other countries who attempt to sell these items in their local markets and then unfortunately what they can't sell will end up in their local landfill. Sometimes even burned or in some cases dumped on local beaches a lot of times what happens. We produce so many of these t shirts that so many of them end up in secondhand stores and a lot of them don't get purchased because who wants a five K. T. shirt from two thousand and two that you never ran you know. And so it's it's a new want system but yeah because we produce so many of them and we're consuming so many times. Something has to be done with them
The Pilgrim Trails of Italy
"Hiking for a week or a month on a historic pilgrimage? Trail in Europe has become a popular Peter way for people from all over the world to rejuvenate themselves. It's gotten so that Spain's popular community. Santiago is even starting to feel a little crowded sometimes times. If you'd prefer a quiet or pilgrim route. Italy may have the answer. Sandy Brown and errands Italia have covered hundreds of miles on the historic walking trails of of Italy. And they WANNA help you give it a try. They've recently helped to found an organization called American pilgrims to Italy. And it's designed to help people like you would meet a plan. Pilgrimage hike in Italy in Sandy has written a detailed guide to tracking the way of Saint Francis from Florence to Assisi and then to Rome there joining us now on travel with Rick. Steves Steph's to recommend trails. That Saint Francis may have himself tracked Erin and thanks for joining us. Thanks for having US happiness. So Europe has these these venerable hikes. That are really long and it has these pilgrimage trails. That really have a a a little bit of a different meaning Aaron. What's the difference between just a long multiday hike in Europe that can be famous and established and a pilgrimage? Well to me pilgrimage signifies. This is a long walk to place of spiritual meaning and so to me. The first one that I ever did was the way of Saint Francis and so oh walking along pads in stopping in towns where he had been in there were stories about him had more of a spiritual context to it than just trekking. The camino goes to the supposed tomb of Saint James Ferried in Santiago de Compostela. Yes that would be the goal. People in the Middle Ages walked from Paris all the way to that northwest corner of Spain with that goal in mind Martin. Luther hiked from way up in Germany all the way to Rome. He was told to hike down there. It was kind of personal. What would you call it Sandy? A personal ordeal or a personal. I think you could say a pilgrimage also committed jar and then when he got to Rome he walked up the steps of this Accra scholar on his knees and had quite an experience. Enrollment was life changing for him so life changing that started the reformation. He did a lot of thinking and he got to Rome. I understand when when he got up to the top of those depths he kind of goes. This is all make sense exactly. It's a time when you think about these things. Isn't it now when we think about Italy. You guys are both specializing in Poke Mitch. Trails in Italy Saint Francis would be the the star of these things Send you wasn't St Francis relate to these pilgrimage trails well the VA Francesco Chess. Go the way of Saint. Francis is a modern connecting of the various different sites from Saint Francis Time and so for instance when he had a big experience the stigma experience at Santiago de la Berna. That's connected then with Google where he spoke with wolf and see see where he was born and had his last days. Okay so this is a modern. Lacing together of these stops people who want to get into whether they want to hike an excuse for hiker to actually get into the the whole life in the teaching of Saint Francis they would do this. Walk the name of your book is tracking the way of Saint Francis Triumph floors to CD-ROM. So that's what that would be. And then we hear about the FRANCI. JANA the via French ejecta is an historic walk. And so it's a little different. From the way of Saint Francis in terms of it was put together in the ancient world or in in the Middle Ages actually because there was a priest by the name of Cyrillic that was elevated to the episcopacy and he was supposed to appear in Rome to receive his Palim. which is the symbol of his office and so he walked with a retinue from Canterbury across France Switzerland down through Italy and arrived in Rome and then instructed his secretary to take notes of the way back and those notes were all contained at the Cathedral and Canterbury where they sat for thousand and years and then thousand years later people said well what is this and they put together the Modern Day via French agenda following that same modern modern day Revisit of this now does that relate to canterbury tales at all. It doesn't away because well. In case of Canterbury Tales they were ending at Canterbury Burri and the case of this. They were starting at Cantor. Okay now would. Saint Francis have actually walked on that trail on the difference. You know although it's very possible possible that he walked portions of it in order to get up to the community Santiago Kaz. He did walk. The community. Santiago did only twelve fourteen but the a piece of the way of Saint Francis that's historic that he was summoned to Rome by Pope innocent the third and he walked from. CCD Rome and ended up at the Saint. John Lateran Church. So that's one of the stops on the way of Saint Francis and it follows roughly his okay if you were so inclined you could leave a C. C. N. B. Meditating on in Saint Francis and his teaching and his experience all the way to Rome. That's actually the goal right and then the finishing point would be Saint Peter's or exactly what well we stop at Saint John Lateran But we end up at Saint Peter's then in my book I include the Pilgrimage Churches of Rome. Yeah as an option at the end because there are seven urban historic pilgrim churches. And it's about a twenty five kilometer walk and you hit. All seven of this. Church is quite an interesting walk in modern day Rome but touching on medieval medieval and ancient sites. Sandy Brown is the author of the CICERO trekking guide to the way of Saint Francis and Errands Italia heads and organization that prepares the American travelers to explore the pilgrimage trails of Italy. We have links to their websites with this week. Show at Rick Steves Dot com slash radio so sandy. When you come to Piazza del Popolo I I try to think of it? Like a pilgrim five hundred years ago. Yeah what do you think when you come to Piazza. No Popolo one thing is before you get there you would have crossed the Ponti Mill View. And that's a wonderful wonderful historic place because that's where the vision of Constantine was where the cost went back in three twelve or three ten or something. Exactly yes then and you follow the road in to Piazza del Popolo. And of course would you would say and what I would say. I is go into the Santa Maria Church and look at the car of Agios right right so that's a piece that you have to do and then we would want people to walk along the ancient streets that had toward the Vatican so so there's the street where they made the beads that go on the rosaries uh-huh and that's a street that we'd want people to go and sort of skirts along the top of the You you know a couple of other. Like Piazza NAVONA. Right on the way to Saint Peter's and if you're a pilgrim you would know that I go down this boulevard to that obelisk and then I looked to the left after nicey a dome and then I looked on there and I see a statue and you you would know how to navigate through the city by these long beautiful elegant streets that lead to great landmarks works. Yes and specially the pedestrian streets so by the time a pilgrim gets to Rome. They've walked maybe a hundred or a thousand or seventeen hundred kilometers commodores. So they're also looking for a bed and a cafe and Wanted to do the kind of walk. It'll get him in the most economical kind kind of way to their destination but then when they arrive in Saint Peter's there is a certificate that it can receive if they've walked at least one hundred kilometers. It's the equivalent on the Community Santiago. Is that Compostella. This is called the testimony. I'm okay and so that's a nice treat for us and I was going to ask you about this. I know when you go to community Santiago. You clicked this passport. Talk about the credential in the practical reason for that when you are a pilgrim in Italy heading to Rome so the credential or they called the credence Ya gala. It's of paper. That's like your passport. That's what differentiates you as a pilgrim from. Just anybody else traveling. So certain places. We'll give you discounts on your lodging. If you have your credential in basically every town you stop and you get a stamp along the way and then when you arrive at Your Final Destination Chan that sort of your proof that hey. I'm pretty awesome because I just did this. Really Amazing Walk and these are the stamps to show it in Rome. Is there actually a a regular place that you go and you can. There's there's somebody there and their job is to stamp this credential yes you go to the pilgrims office and I did not have to wait at all we went in. I was walking with with four friends and we arrived. We had to fill out a piece of paper and it was actually quite emotional thinking you know this is. My journey is officially Dinan. I'm filling out this paper showing where I started. And you get your final stamp and then you receive your like Sandy said your testimony them and then you have a souvenir for this gassing to remember and it's probably a beautiful moment

"Issue is wanting to accra see that's no surprise but in any event again there is a republican doing much the same thing senator jeff flake of arizona who is retiring he's now a yes vote on the taxcut bill but he's worried about deficits as well what is it that both parties see or in the case of sorkin seized for the democratic party in deficits that gives them an advantage who's the audience for this deficit moaning john oh i think the audience is the other party always because you know the democrat suddenly care about deficits and they claim the tax cuts are going to cause quote deficits what's their explanation for the obama years taxes were increased during those years and the deficit rose by what nine trillion dollars got it almost doubled yes almost doubled and the democrats are criticizing republicans because their alleged tax plan would increase the deficit by trillion over ten years the other thing is the democrats blame selectively cherry picking they blame bush for the iraq war they blame bush for the collapse in two thousand seven creating the deficits that they doubled up but i i mentioned that only because both parties have these a back door excuses for their failure please continue tongue in in the end they do in in in my my point once again is that okay well if the deficits are so bad if they're so cumbersome why is it that investors charge the us treasury less and less to borrow um it cost eleven percent to borrow back in 1980 nowadays the cost to percent that's some fairly strong market signal that investors aren't worried at all about being paid back that you at the us is going to do so well economically but these are actually very small and so my what i keep getting back to you is that it's the spending that's the problem doesn't matter which party and it's a problem simply because it gives government more control over the economy but the big thing is with government spending there's no failure bad ideas live forever and in fact they're funded to a greater and greater degree silicon valley put web van out to pasture long ago put the globe dot com out to pasture.
