Why Words Matter: How Jewish Hermeneutics Introduces Words

"Let's talk about a couple of words and how the Jewish language and this would be the final message or the final podcast. If you will in our season one or season two. Yeah. She's in one of the juice of Jesus right season 2 of the podcast, correct? And after this, I think we're going to just dive into the gospels. Oh man. I'm excited about that. Yeah the gospel. Yes Mother season 3 just as a precursor. Just thought oh this out to people will probably come, you know, early 2021. We may kick it off maybe sooner if we're feeling like it, you know gospel. That's that's pretty exciting. NY weight loss. I'm excited about that. No, I just found out interest find out where we're going there. Just get. Okay. So let's take a couple of words. For example, the way the Jewish hermeneutics of hermeneutics is a stud. Art and interpretation of the study of the Bible. Okay. So how do words work and how does God use words? Okay. So let's take let's take the rules. We call it today in modern seminaries or training the rule of first use the rule of first used. They would call it the rule of one or the rule of first. Okay. So basically what they would say is anytime Jewish rabbis would say anytime you see a word introduced in the Hebrew Bible in the Old Testament as we would call it a not a little taller but in the Hebrew Bible whenever a word was introduced first that word sets the tone for how it's used for the rest of the Bible kind of overshadows gives a picture of how this war is going to be used for the rest of the Bible out because when they realize is God in his sovereignty God in his wisdom is giving us a word at a particular point in the encounter of a person wage. Okay. Okay. So I'm going to throw out some words today. So you're going to have to get ready. I'm going to say right now. I'm going to miss every single no no and those listening you can participate as well. Okay play along and do better than me. Okay. So the range of first use we're going to ask the question. When was the word love used who the first time the word love was she in the Bible in the in the Bible Acts? Cannot just throw a book out. Was it Genesis? Yes. Okay. Okay. We're rolling we're rolling now. That was low bar. I gotta say. Okay. Yeah. Well, obviously we're going to go with the big it's a big book too. But oh man, okay in Genesis, so we're narrowing it down. What else what person did it happen in the life of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob Joseph. I like multiple choice as much easier. I'll still get it wrong, but I'm going to go I'm going to go with Josh Abraham was the choice. Maybe I'm going with Abraham. Okay. It's in the life of a party of two for 2 to 4 to now, you've narrowed it down. I get a 75 Rams life is from the 12 chapter 12 Mark wage. All the way until the twenties Sky 25ish. Gotcha. So I have to pick a chat. You gotta pick a chap. Come on a bigger chapter man. I'm going to go with chapter 15 close. It's not even close to each chapter twenty-two. Well the story it's always going to start making sense when you hear this and there's listings with Isaac. Yeah. See I knew the story. You knew this story. I see how the location Genesis 22. Okay. And this is a pivotal Story by the way, if we're talking about the the the pivotal store in the life of Abraham, maybe in the life of the entire Torah is the sacrifice or the offering of Isaac to the Lord because it foreshadows the offering of God son Jesus as the sacrifice. Once it froze powerful. There's so many connections and maybe we'll have time to do that one day but there's so many connections between the two. Okay in Genesis twenty-two the word love is introduced for the very first time and basically what Scholars are saying, is this the way the fog Abraham loved his son was a unconditional sacrificial love that he had where he would do anything for his son and yet God called him to give up the very thing he loved he says his one and only son whom he loved God calls him to give up the very son. He let the one he waited for for twenty-five years the son who stole promise of the Covenant relationship the son who's going to be the descendant for all of the Nations to follow one day this son. Hm the one son and God says that kind of love is the same kind of love I have from my one and only son John chapter 3 verse 16 for God so loved the world history and then say God love to where it says God so loved the world that we had that a lot of translations because this is a this is an amazing love. Yeah. This is a an endless love God so loved the world. He gave us only begotten son and so is dead. She's not in the Greek, but God loved the world. He gave his only begotten son. Whoever believes in him shall not perish. We know that verse. Okay. So the first occurrence of the word love is in Genesis twenty-two and it gives us a picture of or shadowing of Love. Okay, let's do another word. Are you ready for another word? Yes. Second word is going to be the word worship worship now before you think about worship and why you think there's a lot of places in the Old Testament where you can see the word worship and people are worshipping worship doesn't just mean singing. Let's just let's just get that out the way right? We're not talking about worship songs. You can worship through song but that's one of various ways. Yeah, what are some other ways we worship we worship with our time worship with our time to give our time to suffer. Yes, our attention Okay, what else our resources money money? Yeah. I mean, I'm going to go to time talent and treasure just just an easy one. Yeah, the Triple-T that's right. The Triple-T the way we sang. What is there another way we read the Bible dead. We read the Bible. That's an Hour Worship prayers and act of worship serving which already serving is a big one service is the word is the word worship used in Rome is the connection of Romans chapter 12 verse. He says this is your spiritual act of worship or service to God. So service and worship are similar. Okay, and what I mean is worship isn't just an abstract thing worship is an actual wage is something you do in action. Okay. So let's go with worship. What chapter? Well, let's start with the book again. What book is the word worship found in for the first time? I'm going to get a Genesis again. That's a web page doesn't winter a lot of them to go. Can I go with Adam and Eve on this one? Here's another sidebar question you can but hold on, okay. It's interesting that a lot of these words are found in Genesis because the very word Genesis means what in Hebrew who? That's a good question. I don't know the answer to First beginnings beginnings, I think yeah, maybe I did know the answer that I was thinking about the word the word Genesis sit indoors or beginning. I'm not suggesting its birth or beginning. Yes boss. And so basically you have the beginning of all things the beginning of the world the beginning of man the beginning of the nation everything's found in Genesis. Okay, beginning of the language. Okay. So Genesis is good. You're going to go off now. I'm going to go with I'm going to go with a Domani. I'm gonna go that mm. That's going to be wrong. Now my dearie office. Keep going. My next guess is going to be for worship. Is it going to be I guess I'm going to go with Noah long that's going to be a hard note to that's a hard one. That's that's gonna really hard strike. That's right. No, it did probably worship God but not using the word Worsham.

"Well, Elizabeth you know, what I want to do. I'm going to ask would you like for me to send to you? All of these messianic prophecies that reveal who the messiah would be would you enjoy reading that left to okay? We this is in our material called Jewish fulfillment. In other words. I did not grow up. With any Jewish heritage that I know about, but you have I could there's a possibility. But what I say is I have yielded my will to the will of God. And I'm at my my God is the God of Abraham Isaac. And jacob. In other words, I I'm one who converted to the God of Abraham Isaac. And Jacob and there's a whole descendancy there. And that was David and Jesus was a in the line of David now what you what Jewish people do not do. They don't convert. They don't if someone says, oh, well, you need to become a Christian, you need to be converted. That's a mistaken understanding all a Jewish person is doing is finding the fulfillment of the prophecies. They're still believing in everything that the Jewish. Fathers of the faith were teaching into the heritage. The teaching. And there are a guy you what you're saying. But I am do you are Christian or you know, and people are Catholic people are. Believe me, I believe thank God you believe and I just have a different outlook on it. Right. And so this is why just as I did not start out knowing anything about the Christian faith. And but what I want you to know is I I am so grateful for what the heritage is of the tr tremendous truths that are in the Jewish scriptures. And what I learned and I began to see all these scriptures of what would this? What this messiah would look like it these were signs, and my point is we've got to figure out is buggy I happen to to know, many, many, many, many Jewish. Sometimes are called messianic believers, they believe in the messiah they've they received into their lives. The promised messiah who. And all these are scriptures of what would take place for for example, the Old Testament prediction that I've been of Jesus being mocked and insulted and despise and rejected both well, obviously, that's applicable with Jesus. But he was sold for silver doesn't Zachariah eleven. He was betrayed by a friend. He was offered vinegar and gall he prayed for his persecute to persecutors. Kind that happened to us in real life form what I'm saying is. Yes, it ruined says Jesus died percents now really we make their own sense for so though, how can he die for our sense? Okay. What I'm saying? Yeah. And I know that's a whole different concept. But I just went through. No, not really. Well. I think, you know, this is why it's not my opinion. It is what the description in that those are good questions that you have. In fact, I like I like the way you ask questions because there are answers. And I'm not saying I have every answer. But. I would say that. I think I believe I love your voice, your very inspirational to me, and I trust jail. And that's one thing..

"And it's this theme here of this battle here's god will bless and here's here's what humans do humans take what god gives them for good and it's the same story really this just abraham isaac jake jacob they just keep doing horrible things and god keeps coming along and bailing them out this theme human stupidity and rebellion and god's desire to bless in conflict with each other running through each other this theme gets brought to us highlight and climax in the last main section of the book thirty seven through fifty the story of hoon as brothers joseph and his brothers to just think about the story here against a little story that it longer stories but twelve chapters so you have this punk little kid who likes to tell on his brothers and route on his brothers and so they don't like him and he gets to wear the special cook because dad likes him more than any of them and so they want to kill him but they don't they decide to sell them into slavery instead has effect a better option but so that's what they do and you think the sound this is the families imploding the good killing each other and so each other and slavery like how can what's worse and then through this crazy said a circumstances joseph in prison and then he meet some people in prison and the of crazy stuff about interpreting dreams and the next thing you know he's he's somehow like the second in command over all of egypt and then there's this famine in his brothers come to egypt looking for food and who they find their brother and they don't even know it's him yudo and so this irony is that they're brother their act of evil.
