"Basically exploring away wait could do and that is a good sign but oftentimes what you get is not that what you get is so how about the weather and you get this. You know awkward changing the topic and sorta take no okay. Well i guess. It didn't really tickle anything. And when i told the idea of tulio to a bunch of developers funny thing happened. I'd i'd tell the idea what if you had an. Api that did all this stuff and they would say. Oh that's So how about the weather in a i. I was like oh. It's a bad idea in about thirty seconds later. They always circle back and they would say. Oh that phone idea you were telling me about. Hey could i use it to send a notification when the package ships from the e commerce site and building. Could i use it to let a customer call in automated access to information and they always have this idea that correlated back to some idea that we're working on but just soon they couldn't do themselves and that's when i knew like time after time developers would circle back. The gears started turning their head and it always took about thirty seconds and it circle back to you. Wait a minute that idea you. When i saw that happened repeatedly. That's when i knew it was on onto something. Can i ask jeff. Y'all brilliant storytelling. Iannucci spoke to peter segment before this shirt and the one question he had for years. What is gray stories having mean to you. And how do you think you've changed in terms of how we tell stories That's an excellent question. I think we're good story begins. The key thing is to start wherever your listener. You're read or whatever. It is starting a place they know and then bring them somewhere new right so you start with like you're working on a new idea and you're trying to figure out if it's any good and i think a lot of people can probably connect with that idea and then like bringing blog on the journey and tell the various bits that actually end up in the conclusion but i don't know i don't think of myself as an expert storyteller. It's just a way of telling it like it happened and i totally agree in saudi without place if familiarity. I wanna start on your leadership. Because i think blunt nino when you look at your skating from that i found of raising the precede to where we stay in terms of the public markets you are. It's broadened terrible question. I have to admit but it's really like what is great leadership mean to you today. I think gray leadership is really deciding. What behaviors you want permitting your. Let's say for corporately your organization and then modeling those of course but then trying to create the whereby other people can understand why those the behaviors matter in create systems that continually reinforce those behaviors. And i think about companies you know we as human beings we're tribal creatures right. We survived for thousands of years in the wild because we formed a tribes and we could accomplish more together than we could as individuals. And that's what really separates human beings from so many other species. Our very advanced ability to collaborate and that that tribal thinking is like deep in our brains. And so when you think about a company what you really creating is a tribe that people belong to to accomplish something together and if you think about all the tribes that we kind of affiliate with in our lives right. We've got a tribe of the schools that we went to. We've got tribes of the sports teams that we follow. We've got tribes of many people religion. Right these are all the crate identity brands that we like the start to form a kind of a tribal belonging to all these groups and like what creates a tribe. I think is really three things. It's your symbols your heroes and your rituals and that actually allows you to create this identity for a group of human beings to accomplish something together so like the symbols. Those are the things that you value for so for a sports team that might be the mascot of the color scheme right. You've got your heroes right. So who are the people who are the most important the of this tribe right now the great quarterback from the football team or whoever it is and then your ritual. You've got your chance that you do or the thing that everyone whereas on their head you know the cheese head for the green bay. Packers where it's like. Every group in religions have that and schools have that and companies have it too so symbols and rituals. As a leader you are a physical embodiment. And every action you taking the reinforces the values of that tribe or potentially challenges though in a constructive way. Let's think of what is leadership it is really living the hero's symbols and rituals that represent your tribe and creating a string of identity for that group of human beings. And so when i think about like how do you lead. What do you do. It's like you kind of always putting herself through that lens and putting the organization through that lens or physician or building and asking like what are the behaviors that i want what i want to try to stand for and how do i want. That lived every day by all the people in the company. And then how do i create myself the conditions where that's going to happen is that may be a very academic and complex way of stating says kind of how i think about it. No it was fantastic. Human in the way you brought it down downslide. Sports teams needed cheese. Had not now. My question is how rigid all those three things and how plastic to use leaders have to be to change over time with the skating of your company. I mean what. I described to essentially as the culture of a company in there for you as the leader of that culture. Everyone of these cultures evolves and your job is to really understand. When is it the time for them to evolve and then the lead that transformation lead the changes that you feel. The tribe needs in order to continue to survive and thrive as a ceo. Going back to the three person company that we were when we started it up to our over five thousand employees. You have to continually reinvent your job in many ways yourself. In order to continue to be effective at leading organizations that are bigger and more diverse and more viewpoints as well as in a more tactical sense like the mechanisms used to lead a company as it grows need to continually evolve. And i always find that jones speaking when we continue. We were thirteen years old today. We are continuing to grow extraordinarily fast. And i find that you have to kind of reinvent how you lead give or take every twelve to eighteen months in that kind of environment. If you don't then you're great risk of falling behind the needs of the company when you think back to being a three person team that can pass way you all stay. You won the same leader then you all today. It's a much more mature leadership storms in the standpoint with aaron flashing moments. That changed how you thought about that leadership. I think first time. I realized the need for that. This is a continually evolving job. I remember the company was about thirty people and i was really frustrated all the time like it didn't seem to be working well anymore. I remember i was talking to one of our investors albert wenger from union square ventures and fred wilson has partner and i was talking to them and i was like events that they were holding the. How's it going like honestly it feels pretty crummy right now. Why is that. And i was explaining things. I was frustrated by it. Can you draw the org chart for me. And i said oh yeah. I've never done that before. Actually because we're such a small company you don't think about org charts in those early days of a company just like you just kind of running fast so okay and i go up to the light board. I'm like okay. Well there's me and then there's this the i'm drawing person and it's a straight line with everybody reporting to me. It worked when we were three four. Five people right but at some point we reached a tipping point. Where like you needed an order chart. That wasn't just a straight line helped make sense of things and to make progress. And so i remember drawing this thing and i'm as i'm going along i'm like There's another and then albert says. Well there's your problem is like fair enough right and that was just one.

"Host daniel juicy. You hurry this morning. Dr paul doing fine. Thank you good to go to work. Yes indeed bring out Truth to the world. We'll try but anyway. That's a job and a half. There's a lot of misinformation out there but there's some interesting things going on. I want to talk about our famous president You know they hit a press. Conference sir made a statement yesterday and there was a lot of discussion about that. One discussion i heard on regular television was You know it wasn't only radical right wing. Republicans that brought it up but others more mainstream people was bringing up. Oh how's he doing. Why don't they ask him. Why don't they ask the press people or biden. Of course there's no live press conference house biden doing Implying that he might have a problem but anyway the subject was interesting us because he wanted to talk about ghanem's and and all all the problems that we face but he brought up the subject of F. fifteens and nuclear weapons and you can running is direction a. It seems to me enter some others that he was undermining his position on insurrections and hear who is talking about the f. Fifteen nuclear weapons would be necessary but None of that and yet he was using this term was a using the term in order to that they can use these big weapons anytime they wind threatening people or just what. I think that might have been The issue that confused a lot of people because it sorta opened up the door for the people who don't like them the republicans. Sort of make fun of this whole thing. You know that he was setting the stage for war You you know. Undermining his contention that the republicans and january six is a big deal. It's there hanging onto this to really hurt. The republicans and i think is going to flop just like the russian scandal flop eventually the most people in this country. They don't even think about that anymore. And they don't believe all the garbage have and but but this this now makes people Should make people reassess their interpretation. You know of january six and But but he did have a few confusing statements that he made there that Should be something that everybody should be concerned about. Yeah he did step into it. And i think without realizing it. He completely undermined the entire narrative for january six which as he said was the worst threat to our democracy since the civil war. Let's let's listen to what he said yesterday. It's about thirty seconds long if you can if you can get through it. Listen what he had to say.

"This point. Brian transfer some of his gear to john's bag and walks back to college. Brain will just be on lookout now and in the car and keep the point of contact updated welp. John goes at it alone as so we kind of just said the game plan We got out radios and Essentially so it does next location. It was again very well lit. They had camera coverage from the front was near a park as we mentioned before. But the whole back side of it was residential And it was on a very major road very busy. And so we definitely didn't wanna approach from the front There's way too much risk of getting caught so kind of went through the back kind of along the fence line that the residential housing and not well lit back there. So i there wasn't a whole lot going on. I managed to get to the target building and there. There was a door there again. Pretty well hung. None of our bypass tools worked on it I was in contact with brian. The whole time aradio and with our contact through text there was an alternate point of entry. But i decided it was too risky to try. I own would've had to go over another barb wire fence and you know there's just too much risk involved if i would have fallen in head. Nobody there for me or anything to happen to once. I was inside again. No backup so. I just tried to the one door and unsuccessfully for that one but for the plan was a door with with the coverage of lighting and cameras for the must pardons and part of the buildings can win them all but john heads back to the car. It's getting late now. It's past two. Am at least the point of contact is still awake and watching the sock though. Men's still the sock has not detected them. They've managed to stay in the shadows. Just well enough that nobody is aware that two buildings have been broken into and a third has been tempted. They drive to the last two buildings now targets four and five very close to each other. You can see one building from the other and the plan to just park near wine and try to access both at once now. These last two buildings are more like offices not just sheds equipment. So if they can get in. These are expecting to see desks and regular office equipment in there and in building. Five is where the sock is located to the last building. They're going to try to get into actually. Has the people in there who are trying to watch to make sure nobody gets into these buildings and it somewhere on these two buildings that has those long range cameras that took their photo earlier so arguably these are the most secure buildings. They're going to try to get into. So we're a little apprehensive about this one or i was at least Again bryan bryan couldn't walk at this point and he was in the car We were talking to the client and they they wanted to proceed. And so in. This case i i approached from the back from the recon faced. We knew where most their cameras were I approached kind of in the shadows along a tree line and wasn't spotted at all the main entry for this. There was a chain link fence and there was another gate and it had a gap underneath and that seemed like a really easy way. Past the perimeter. The downside was that there was a camera right next to it and i just kind of took a role that is shuffled my way underneath and ran into the shadows and looked at my phone contact. That was in the perimeter And he was like. They didn't see you. You're you're good point lead to the first building. And so i kinda sat there and now get nervous during these things. It's definitely an adrenaline rush. Kinda tried to breathe that off a little bit and then moved to the first building I store i tried. I couldn't get in. None of the peissel's worked Well hung proper insulation but the second door popped open no issues except that soon as i got on in inside a motion activated lighting and significant camera coverage inside this building and so as soon as i pop the door open all the lights turned on and i found myself staring a camera right in my face. Not only did this building have cameras outside but it had cameras inside to specifically pointed at the door that john just opened. What's more is. He triggered the lights to come on inside and probably was bringing some kind of alarm when that door was opened even if john ducked behind a desk right now. The sock team could easily rewind the tape and see him standing there staring at the camera. So what's the penetration tester do when they've been caught on camera go for i pretty much. Just kind of sprinted through the building taking pictures trying to find network for trying to get into the target locations managed to bypass another door with under gore tool and get into a a secure location at this point. I'm looking at my phone and the contact like you got about thirty seconds until there. And i'm like oh shoes we don't actual cops are coming. Oh yeah the stock has no idea. This is just the test and are reacting normally would and as it turns out the socks did see the alarm and they did check the camera footage and did see john getting unauthorized entry into this building. So of course they would immediately call the cops and the spring and action. So time is ticking. Now what do you do in that thirty seconds. Go back the way you came. Get on the roof or something but whatever the protocol is for this. You can throw that out the window because when there's adrenaline pumping scared. It's really hard to make logical choices. Well actually i into the door in the front of the building. I had another to go to and that that other closer he opens the front door and looks outside. I heard honking. And i heard something going on. I was like okay. I'm back out the back door that i came in what had happened. Is the person in the saw him at the building quickly jumped in the company's security truck went to the front gate unlocked the police and then proceeded to drive to the building honking and flashing lights. This way when the police show up they know exactly where to go. There was so much ruckus going on. When john opened the front door he immediately turned around and went back inside and headed for the door. He came in through so he runs to the back door. Gets it open. Inco's outside but as soon as he gets out that door the security chart comes zooming closer to him so the the truck is coming at me with the lights on and i initially ducked down and tried to hide. There was kind of a loading dock type situation. And i got as low and like close to the concrete is could thinking. Maybe he didn't see me jump down. But he pulled up a rightness.

"But the see the two of them come together and in the feel everything was going on and the amazing thing that dorsey and kristen her mom and kevin her dad and how they hosted the entire weekend of this unmitigated joy and the first time that all of us had been together because of covid rules or was just incredibly incredibly impacting for everybody. Who is there. And i'll leave you with one story. Then we can get into the sports. I'm standing there right before gunners getting ready to give a speech and my friend lisa. O'brien gucker comes over to me. Lisa is the widow of timmy. O'brien one of the guys. Who helped me start my foundation for cystic fibrosis. And he got me to howard neck. Who gave me the space in the world trade center and everything else and lisa. It comes over and she goes my head's tangling am i. Okay gradstein you okay. You be going to be fine. She goes she goes timmy's with us. I can feel them. I can feel him. And i said well if you could feel him. Wait the heat boy. Wait until about thirty seconds. i want. Tell her yeah. And then of course. Connor gives the news that they're pregnant and she lets out a wealth. Like i couldn't believe and that was kind of like the the i think i caught it at is that right eddie was there. I thought that he was going to collapse. And the thing was that you know you'd get announcements at weddings and some people are just not fully aware the story but it was more impactful because everyone there do what was going on and what had led up to this so it was you know everyone. So is even more impactful. You told me it was the all time mic drop moment. Yeah absolutely can't do better than that. And when i heard. And i saw it on social media i was actually. "What is the way in which the oppression claimed is is is manifest that we we have to see what's actually happening in the case rather than simply saying well. The constitution gives a right to any particular community or doesn't give a right any particular community. It just depends on what the lies and so that says that That prevents a transgender person from from being employed oppressive in very serious ways. I i need to know why that law was passed in. What justifies it In order to resolve the case of course but a different case might be quite different right. I'd want to know the evidence for any claim about The medical procedures relating to people who get surgery if it were the case that those surgeries were in fact A terribly harmful to people in ways. That could be documented. Well that's relevant to the case. So it's not to say that i think we can't resolve these sorts of things the abstract we. They're not just cases about rights communities also have rights to pass laws their cases about cases cases about disputes right in which there are values important commitments on on on both sides off. Yeah well Chase stranger told us one more thing. that he does see a potential for change In the based legal model we can put it that way Especially when so little legislation currently in chases view is being passed by government fully. Sees me that so little legislation is being passed that further protects trans individuals. We need to change the courts we need to change potentially in the constitution. Because it's very limiting in many ways. But i guess i am hopeful that we will continue to be creative and make new demands. You know we can say oh. We want the government to pass laws not just demanding equality of treatment but demanding specific -firmative things are housing for food or comfort We don't have rates to those things that chase stranger. Deputy director for transgender justice at the aclu's lgbt and hiv project. Professor green. just comment on that for a second. Because i think an area agreement here is that the focus on defining and protecting rights through the courts has led it to be far more difficult in the united states to come up with with laws with policies as chase says that that That are that owner. Affirmative rights healthcare food shelter. Has it made it more difficult to do that in the us absolutely it's made it more difficult and this is something i focus on in chapter. Four of the of the book is if we think about rights and in in almost absolute ways rights to housing rights to healthcare or rights dedication are going to seem very foreign and threatening the idea that a court is going to come in and order. The government to provide equal healthcare. everyone seems oppressive. And it is because courts shouldn't be involved in that kind of a that kind of politics right so if if that's how we think about rights we're going to say well there must not. There must not be a right to health. Care must not be a rights education. There must not be right to to housing but if we think about rights as an invitation to mediation than we can actually ask the kinds of questions that are important to justice so if someone is being denied in education for no good reason or denied equal education for no good reason as in the san antonio schools case in nineteen seventies were court people kids in poor neighborhoods just got manifestly were schools and case enrich neighborhoods will then court should have an entry point into that into that kind of that kind of a policy but if we think about If we think that the only way courts can have an entry point is if they give you know. Perfect equality to everyone. They're not going to do that so the book is about protecting rights. It's about protecting a the those rights. That courts are afraid of by forcing or trying to get people to recognize the ways in which rights populate all sides of disputes and so then require a much finer approach then. The kind of what. I think is a pretty blunt approach courts. So this is this is really critical here because you you are imagining a world where through policy-making through that lawmakers could actually be effective and creative even in coming up with systems of governance and civil society in which all all kinds of rights and fairness is are are addressed. But i think the problem is people. Don't have faith in the political system as it is for example we got a census message saying america's americans seem to think that individual rights are all a cart menu items. What we need is a functioning. Congress that defines our collective rights through a sound political process. And i would add to that professor green that you are also by by by pointing a finger at the the downside of the dangers of the zero sum game approach that rights adjudication in the courts brings about and the fundamentalism essentially that that has brought about and saying we need to move at least partially away from that and towards more creative lawmaking. You're also asking people to be willing to to compromise more to or to accept compromises across the political spectrum And even the slightest compromise. They might find unacceptable. I mean did. Is that even possible today. That very fundamentalism that has been formed through to the courts has infected our politics outside of the courts. Well i think that's right. I'll say a couple of things. One is that if court approach rights conflicts as if compromise is not necessary then that affects politics right so if courts were to say. We're not going to give you everything you want. Then that affects the amount of leverage people have been political conversation. It affects a what people ask for from court. Let's at least things are are related to each other. I i'm certainly not. I'm not an i'm not utopian right so i i. I don't think the political system is what people want from it. Their has lots of problems. But i also think it's important to to to recognize that. When i say politics i don't just mean congress writer i don't i don't just mean a state legislature. There are lots of sites of politics. In fact we're having one right now so a conversations that happened within the media conversations that happened in your youth sports league conversations that happen in people's living rooms and in their places of worship a and in their civic organizations. These are all wait places in which the political culture is formed. That's where we work out. What are norms are. That's those that inform our political choices and the political universe. Looks like and if we think courts are the place to do that. Then that's going to be hollowed out and that's not a very healthy society. Well jack got about thirty seconds left here a little less than that. I'm gonna give you a final word today on this really fascinating thesis from professor green. Well i think you make a capital point magnets that the that the stark win-lose binary decisions made in courts have infected the politics. It's as if especially the controversy around abortion an abortion rights is an example of that That that that's been no help. In terms of our general political temperature in the professor suggests ways of perhaps dialing back. That polarization jack beatty on point news analyst. Thank you as always and jamal. "That the thing about today's nba and the reason. I spoke so highly about the nets. Away i did is because we're not in the nineties. We're not in the nineties. What i mean by that is today's nba and the rules in. Today's nba are geared toward the offensive player. They have every possible advantage when you have three of those guys on the same basketball team. It's game over game over when you had irving who does what he does. Kevin donated does what he does what he does. And all these other guys who skill set complement their stars. If i thing about this piece they took her was brought in to guard. Someone like kevin durant holiday was born into guard. Someone just like how do you know what the difference is and today's nba. They use their stress. I guess what kevin the way it got really do so be. They can't use aside against kevin durant can't do the strength against kevin durant through holiday. Can't use the side against ryobi all the rules in today's nba benefit the player. So you know what that means if the brooklyn nets lose it's gonna come down to kevin durant can't really joe harris can blake griffin missing shots. That does similar to work. I really had in boston. I believe it was game. Three or game to reenact point it could hit. It wasn't a different. Is it the fact that he was missing shots at today's nba and it's more skilled now than it's ever been it's game over. It came over when you have guys that are skilled in this sounded. We got about a minute about thirty seconds for your answer. I ask you quickly. I think the clippers are the only team left that has could give the nets greenie type of problems. Is that fair agreed. I do agree with that. And the reason i agree with that is because they have the dvd versatility to play down to play them. All you know you saw it against dallas. No look the best player that series. What serang lou the is. He removed some of the equation and they played basically one through five small ball. They switched everything and they have two of the best players lee to mess up against that big three that we just talked about in brooklyn all right. And i should say tania that about two dozen state of general have basically agreed with this idea. They say this is an overreach by the bankruptcy court that would curb their power to hold. The sackler is accountable. It is important to say the sack lawyers say they've done nothing wrong They've never been charged with any crimes. You know they say that. They behaved appropriately when they were leading. Purdue pharma okay now been charged with a crime but is that on the table. Do you think criminal charges could actually happen. Purdue has pled guilty to federal criminal charges over their marketing of painkillers. A critics have called the settlers themselves to face criminal charges to is that a is that a possibility right now. The legal experts. That i talked to you save that it appears very unlikely what happened last year. Is that the justice department reached a settlement with purdue pharma that included criminal guilty pleas by the company. They also plead guilty to criminal charges. Back in two thousand seven but none of those cases have ever named the sackler directly for criminal liability. One interesting thing is that the justice department did reserve the right to file criminal charges in the future. That's part of the agreement but they have not done so yet and it now appears unlikely that the doj will do that again. As part of that agreement the sackler lers said they did nothing wrong. They either civil or criminal. Penalties would be inappropriate. I have about thirty seconds with you. Have you heard from people impacted. What do they think about all of this. The company's pleaded guilty repeatedly to criminal charges for their marketing of oxycontin and people are wondering why a there haven't been individuals held more accountable than this and so i think that's one of the big discussions going forward.
