"Featured story is an opinion piece by CoinDesk's Daniel Kuhn. Our piece today is entitled, Why Elizabeth Warren is Wrong about Crypto and the Fentanyl Epidemic. For a while, crypto's role in the illegal and gray area drug trade seemed swept under the rug, or at least it was not getting the attention it could have, which is good and which the Fed shuttered back in 2013. It's good because some people have a tendency to moralize about drug use, and the less crypto is linked to crime in general, the less the entire industry will be stigmatized. However, it would arguably be better to be upfront about such things, assuming they're going on, as data now suggests. If crypto ever has a shot at finding a killer use case, or mass user base who understands why blockchains are important. U .S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, is calling for a greater crypto crackdown following new research from blockchain analytics firms Chainalysis and Elliptic that found Bitcoin and Tether, or USDT, have become cornerstone to the global fentanyl trade. These are the same research companies that put out annual reports showing a fraction of a fraction of crypto transactions can be tied to illicit use. Quote, crypto is helping fund the fentanyl trade and we have the power to shut that down, Warren said, continuing, it's time. End quote. The Senator is a longtime critic of crypto, who recently made an incomprehensible anti -crypto army campaign part of her re -election bid. But does the Senator have a point? I already know what the crypto faithful will say. Chainalysis estimates less than 1 % of total crypto transactions are related to crime, so it doesn't matter if Chainalysis is now saying there's evidence. At least $37 .8 million worth of crypto was sent to drug manufacturers in China since 2018. But hold that thought, we'll get back to it. First, let's try to place crypto's alleged use for drug sales in the context of the global drug trade. To start, it's difficult to judge just how large the fentanyl economy is, because it is, by nature, kept mostly out of sight. But if Chainalysis and ellipsis figures are to be meaningful, they need context. According to one source Chainalysis cited, total quote chemical exports, end quote, from China, assumed by most authorities to be the largest manufacturer and exporter of black and gray market drugs, surpassed $100 billion in 2021 alone.

"Hello friends. Well, this morning as I was prepping the show, news broke from Reuters. Walter Bloomberg on Twitter said, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange Binance co -mingled customer funds with company revenue in 2020 and 2021. In breach of U .S. financial rules that require customer money to be keep separate, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. So let's go through this, let's try to get a sense of how serious this is, let's see if there is another Sam -type situation on our hands. First, let's talk the accusation. Well, it's pretty much right there in the headline, Binance co -mingling customer funds with company revenue in 2020 and 2021, the sourcing, three sources familiar with the matter and Reuters, but let's try to get a few more details. From the Reuters piece, quote, one of the sources, a person with direct knowledge of Binance Group's finances, said the sums ran into billions of dollars and co -mingling happened almost daily in accounts the exchange held at U .S. lender Silvergate Bank. Reuters couldn't independently verify the figures or the frequency, but the news agency reviewed a bank record showing that on February 10th, 2021, Binance mixed $20 million from a corporate account with $15 million from an account that received customer money. Reuters found no evidence that Binance client monies were lost or taken. So there's a bunch that's important here. One is that Reuters couldn't verify the figures in total and that they really only had this one particular bank record showing a mixing. Now, what did Binance say? Well, in a statement to Reuters, they obviously denied this. Spokesperson Brad Jaff said, these accounts were not used to accept user deposits. They were used to facilitate user purchases. There was no co -mingling at any time because these are 100 % corporate accounts. Reuters goes on.

Was there bias in the way Maryland's former medical examiner determined how people died in police custody. It's at the heart of a plan to do new in depth reviews of in custody deaths in Maryland. A panel of experts consulted by Maryland officials found that 100 autopsies of people who died in police custody across the state should get a closer look. That's prompted Maryland attorney general Brian frosh to order a fresh, in depth review of deaths involving people who were physically restrained while in custody. The move comes more than a year after a state audit into a 1300 autopsies performed by David Fowler, the former state medical examiner, Fowler testified for the defense in the murder of George Floyd, Fowler had testified that Floyd's death was caused by drug use and heart disease. "Today June the 21st a day before by birthday Thousands of these live in public collections NPR's Jennifer the Nazca was in Manhattan when a machine arrived to play recordings that may not have been heard in a century Deep in the basement of the New York public library for the performing arts there's a new machine about the size of a small suitcase It has two screens and intimidating number of buttons and dials a laser and an arm holding a stylus like the kind of needle that plays records on a turntable It's called the endpoint cylinder and dick belt machine And we're going to hear audio that no one else has heard likely since around the turn of the last century And a lot of times no one even knows what's on these cylinders They're blank No label space or add a nice label so you get a priceless thing next to something that's just a common cylinder That's Nick Burke the inventor of the endpoint This is a laser in back of here and it's looking he flew here from Burbank California with its machine and a trunk full of tools And now he's setting it up One of the first recordings he's going to try to digitize was found by curator Jessica wood in 2016 The music division did not keep very careful acquisitions records back in the 1930s I just know that the big wooden box that I found on the inside of the lid it said gift of Mary Dana to the New York public library in 1935 She's hoping we'll hear a birthday party or something that tells us more about the social history of the time Even someone shouting their name and explaining their testing the machine which is a pretty common thing to hear on these recordings Because the important thing about wax cylinders is not just that they played the earliest recordings of commercial music and comedy sketches is that for the first time people were able to record themselves And many did or they were recorded by other people like ethnographers Nick Berg Native American recordings are very rewarding to work on because a lot of times those communities are relearning their language and such and there are other stories And so some of the projects I work on they're now cutting those up into words and the phrases to using the classrooms they're on the reservations and such There are about 2700 cylinders in the collection of the New York public library 90 are mysteries The endpoint not only produces clearer recordings than earlier machines but the laser can read cylinders that are cracked or broken Curator wood takes a box wrapped in brown paper out of a large red cooler like you'd have to picnic We usually put it in a cooler because the temperature fluctuation is high enough that it could sort of upset the cylinder could cause it to crack Holding it to be careful just because of the heat of your hands you have to kind of rotate you want to hold it for too long or it could crack just by by holding it It's a light putty brown color which means it's an early recording Black wax cylinders came later It's also fairly smooth grooves are barely visible and the cylinder itself is thin Berg says these are signs that it's a home recording but also that the levels are very low and may be hard to hear These are all acoustically recorded so they had to yell into a horn essentially So often if they're a distance away from the horn it's a very low recording level Most of the people doing these recordings were hobbyists who were experimenting One of the most famous is Lionel mapleson He recorded his family But he was also the librarian from the metropolitan opera and in the early 1900s he recorded dozens of rehearsals and performances listening to his work is the only way you can hear pre World War I upper singers with a full orchestra They represent the first extensive recording live recordings in recorded history Bob 'cause it's a librarian and the music and recorded sound division He says mapleson was a pioneer And then he started capturing sounds from the Met stage from various places first from the prompter's box and then he went to the fly system and he got really good results And he became a kind of fanatic and kept on doing it and doing it The library knew right away how important these recordings were Over the years librarians tried to transfer them to other media several times They sent them out to the Library of Congress.

What's the What's the latest report and what's the reaction by the State Department and the United States military at this point? Well, it's it's as I'd like to say It's complicated. All right, as you mentioned, uh, the folks who are now running Afghanistan, this new caretaker governments The acting Prime minister, Mullah Hassan, a Kunde. Excuse me. He's the acting prime minister is currently on the United Nations sanctions list. Storage. Akani has been appointed Minister of Interior. He's listed by the FBI, the designated terrorists and it goes on and on. The intelligence chief is also a former Gitmo detainees, So I'm not necessarily the guys that the State Department would have picked to run the new government there, but sure at the moment the U. S doesn't recognize. The Taliban is running the government. So, according to the United States, Afghanistan doesn't have a government right now. As for the evacuees, the State Department says that the U. S still has about 100 people there. We've heard about this dramatic escape before Americans Overland. Afghanistan out of the country. But the reports about her conflicting There are members of Congress who insist that they're working with these private groups to get them out. And they've done all the work. These private groups. The U. S. State Department is saying they helped get them out. But they're not being particularly specific. Nor are they denying that these private groups had something to do with it. So There's a lot of mystery and intrigue still going on and trying to get people who very much want to get out of that country. It And, you know, obviously I don't have any knowledge about this. Really, uh, in any direct knowledge about it, obviously just reading reports from thousands of miles away, but Which seemed to me that it's going to be more difficult every day to get, uh the Americans or anyone we want out of Afghanistan to actually get them out of Afghanistan. Is that is that a fair assumption? Well, the State Department keeps putting as good of faith as they can on this here, but again, you know, the president said he had, uh, a a choice either send tens of thousands more Americans in there to do the job that the Afghan government was supposed to do until it folded. 300,000 strong Afghan government that your taxpayers mine and everyone else's in this country paid to train and right and also equipped They just folded. So at that point, the U. S only had 2500 service members there and they either had to get everyone out as quickly as possible. Or send more people in and the president said. I'm not going to send any more people in and risk their lives. He got out as many as he could. I think upwards of 6000 Americans, but there are still 100. Many of those, according to the State Department are people who are dual citizens. They aren't necessarily born and raised here in the United States, they either naturalized citizens. Or citizens of both countries, and they were conflicted, many of them about leaving until the last minute, which is what has put them in this precarious situation. Back to the question of the temporary government. I'm sure our State Department had to know that many of the players in that new government we're going to be exactly the people we wouldn't want to be. You know, in power and you talk about terrorists and and known terrorists. I mean, we had to know that all of this was coming. I don't want to be one of those Monday morning quarterback guys who sits back and you know and throws rocks, not knowing anything about the situation, but it's It's just hard to believe that we we seem to be so flat footed and so unprepared about this. I think the the unpreparedness was that the entire government and the army would simply fold and leave. Yeah, the The assumption was that the the government that was in place Would do something to negotiate with the Taliban. Certainly, that was the deal that President Trump made with the Taliban and his negotiators in his state Department. Uh, that didn't happen. Uh, now it doesn't seem that the Taliban really used a whole lot of force. They just marched in and everyone said here, Come on in, right. Everybody was saying and thinking a year is going to take three months It took six or seven days. I get all that, but what? We were working with those people for 20 years. It's hard to imagine we didn't see this, but I need to move past. I I agree with you. I think that that is a tremendous failure on intelligence and assessing what the situation is there now. Certainly there are other people there, especially veterans. We'll come back and said, Well, of course that was going to happen. We could have told you that. Uh, But it's unclear wide four different presidents now, starting with George W. Bush and ending with President Biden weren't able to assess that this was going to be the outcome.
