"Quick take This is Bloomberg 11 three O now a global news update The U.S. Supreme Court is fast tracking a challenge to a controversial Texas abortion law The court will hear oral argument on November 1st for now the law will remain in place in Texas The State Department says nearly 200 U.S. citizens are still trying to get out of Afghanistan A top official told Congress this week the department remains in contact with over 360 U.S. citizens and more than half want to get out A senior Al-Qaeda leader has been killed in a U.S. drone strike U.S. central command reports Abdul Hamid Al matar was killed in Syria by a military drone in a written statement U.S. Army major John brigsby says there were no other known casualties from the strike And someone in Arizona is $108 million richer a winning ticket in last night's a mega millions drawing was sold in the valley of the sun and the winter has a choice of receiving 30 payments over 29 years or take a lump sum of 75 million bucks I'm Scott Carr This is Bloomberg intelligence with Alex Steele and Paul Sweeney on Bloomberg radio So we gave you the overall view of what to look for in the European earnings season Why don't drill down even more into European industrials It's gonna be all about cost for these guys because they're so exposed to the rising energy cost for example Want to get more with Bloomberg intelligence industrials analysts Mustafa accord Mustafa what's your base case for industrials How ugly is it going to be Yes Alex What works anticipating is thanks to a good base effect from last year's sales should hold at about a double digit rate So the consensus expectation is for an 11% growth rate But the earnings conversion will really slow down after a stellar two Q so what's happening now is a lot of hedges for the costs such as raw materials steel et cetera they're rolling over at higher spot prices So unfavorable hedges are coming through And then we have things like labor inflation and stockage of work or production due to a shortage of components So all of that is coming to head in this quarter for European industrials Is there what's your sense of Mustafa has the market They brought down estimates enough do you think or do you think this is a sector that might be susceptible to some negative surprises I think for this quarter we're okay There won't be a material change to the estimates this quarter or next in my opinion What's more at risk is probably next year And we're going to see how the orders develop and at what price level So for example elevates your companies They've been booking orders at a good rate comparable to 2019 levels but the price concessions that they have had to make as well as the rising cost of steel means that their margins have come down quite a bit for the yearend And we'll probably see a little bit more of that trend especially for companies that can not raise price as fast as fast as their peers Don't they lock in their costs though Or do they hedge They do So typically raw material hedges they tend to be for 6 to 12 months But the thing is we've had a lot of raw material inflation in the past year So now those will roll over at higher split prices Talk to us about the chips and semiconductors that's been an issue for so many industries What are some of the industrial companies saying about that So industrial companies do not have as much direct exposure to semiconductor chips What they do have however is customers that use those chips So automotive is a big end market It can be ten to 15% of some large revenue of some large industrial companies And production stoppages at automotive plants would affect the industrial sector for sure Where might be sort of the bright spots Are there certain subsectors that are either more immune from this or where demand is just so strong that it really outweighs these issues So yes we have had mining equipment for example which has been very very strong The backlog is essentially full for 2020 one and most of 2022 for a company like after work for example a Swedish maker of mining machinery So there the volume is helping offset the cost pressure I would highlight that And construction equipment has been very good so far but slowing down of demand in China may affect that negatively So again let's on the demand side of the equation what is the expectation into next year Is this a kind of multiyear global reopening story or maybe not that duration So there is an element of returning over CAPEX cycle So again heavy machinery and Fox as well The fleets haven't been replaced or replenished since the 2012 super cycle on the mining side So there is an element of CAPEX investment going forward now So we do anticipate that last thing through most of 2022 And GDP plus rate of growth should be doable for most companies Although on the other hand for Q three for example we're anticipating double digits as I said before that's more duty basis effect and that will start to go away starting Q one Q two next year If China growth keeps slowing and then property sector comes under a lot of pressure and they get hit with soaring high energy prices What's the knock on effect to the European industrial sector So it really depends on the company So some of them have direct exposure to the construction sector in China which is going through a lot of turmoil now So the other major companies like Quentin Schindler for example we anticipate their sales will slow Quite substantially next year But that's also already reflected in their valuations In terms of general industry and automotive and other big markets things will slow but it seems like the power cuts they should be manageable for most So overall I would say slower growth from China for sure especially following the stellar recovery that we had after Q three in 2020 since then But overall it should probably be offset partly by European the U.S. growing as well as the measures that the government is taking in China too It's going to be super interesting to get all the read through there Thank you so much Mustafa Mustafa akura Bloomberg intelligence industrials analyst All right let's turn to infrastructure We know we're going to get some infrastructure Bill through Congress and there's going to be billions of dollars for roads and bridges and a lot of folks are saying how do I play that Well we had a name for you that might be interesting Let's bring on Bloomberg intelligence senior engineering software analyst alin Siegel Eileen talk to us about Bentley systems What do they do and what's the call here Yeah so Bentley's systems we just launched a primer on the company It's about a 20 billion market cap a little less maybe actually 18 billion about a billion in sales And it specializes in software to manage infrastructure assets So that's like roads bridges water plants water treatment facilities everything that we use in our everyday lives So if nothing is passed in D.C. for example are they good No they're like extra good If something is passed in D.C. somewhere over a $1 billion well I definitely think they'll benefit if it does get passed but I think they have grown the company for the last 20 years at an 8% compound annual sales growth rate Without this And it is a global company about 43% of their sales on the U.S. but they have a very strong presence in Europe and they also sell about 20% to Asia So give some examples of some of their main business lines Is it tied to really constructing a road a bridge How does that work Yeah so about half their business is considered sort of their core business in what's called 2D and 3D computer aided design that's cad software and building information modeling that's bim software And this is what engineers use to create 3D virtual models of things that will eventually become physical assets And increasingly they've been moving more into project management and asset operation management So once those rose roads and bridges are already built you can then virtually monitor them remotely Who are from their customers So they sell quite a bit to the government as well as Well that's helpful Around governments around the world and governmental agencies their standard in 47 out of 50 U.S..

cantrell says the city is planning for a return of Mardi Gras in 2022 tweeting the only way it might again be limited or canceled is if coronavirus numbers got dramatically worse before then I'm Scott Carr I'm Barry riddle you're listening to masters in business on Bloomberg radio My special guest this week is a kinder sing Cassidy She is a tech exec and serial entrepreneur as well as the former president of StubHub Her new book choose possibility take risks and thrive even when you fail is out and is getting excellent reviews Let's talk a little bit starting with your role as president of StubHub what was that like Did you have any surprising challenges you had to deal with in that role I feel like that's the leading question Just a touch But certainly I'm happy to share So I ran StubHub from 2018 to 2020 in that time The lot of a lot of surprises Some I could have anticipated in some I couldn't First of all just a phenomenal and fun experience If you've ever been in a business of live experiences and giving that gift to people of why there's just really nothing like it And I'm also happy to be a big sports entertainment fan So that doesn't hurt But when I think about the things that we're surprises number one StubHub if you know the history was bought by eBay over ten years ago And so was an eBay subsidiary And I could have anticipated that eBay would continue to face shareholder pressure because it wasn't growing at the same rate as Amazon and its margins were declining And in fact that shareholder pressure came to pass and activist Elliot two activists joined the board starboard and Elliott in 2020 No no in 19 my goodness In January of 2019 and put pressure on the CEO the then CEO to sells that hub as opposed to hold it So midway I was only a year into my tenure when an activist joined the eBay board and quickly became apparent that we were going to end up selling the company and I was going to be leading a sale process which is not necessarily what I personally wanted But so that I could have anticipated in the sense that eBay had added activist once before And certainly when I took the StubHub job it did occur to me that that would be one potential risk that eBay sells my parents taught me with these pressure I expected more earnings pressure pressure to deliver our numbers every quarter There was an outside possibility of an activist The fact came to pass and that led to the sale of the company to step up sales The Onyx the other unexpected event with COVID And ironically StubHub sold for a record stop you know $4 billion We led a process that led to a successful transaction that closed on February 13th 2020 And I thought as much as I was personally disappointed you know I recognize it's a very successful business outcome And I was going to go have to find a new job because very rarely was the acquired company get to have a CEO around the combined company And I certainly was not getting that job The original founder of StubHub bought back the company and he wanted to run the combined company There's a thing with you and founders coming back to run companies That's the keep in mind I've also been a founder three times Right So I do understand that founder CEO dynamic and as I said I mean founders have an affinity for their companies that is really hard to I don't know It's just hard to put any price tag or any Sure Let's jump to our favorite questions that we ask all of our guests starting with Tell us what you've been streaming these days Give us your favorite Netflix or Amazon prime or podcast whatever's keeping you entertained during the pandemic Sure Well I probably have three that are at the top of my list these days First of all Ted Lasso I know that you hold my family in love So good Such a feel good funny funny show So well done Season two not so good a season one but I will just say we're still Ted Lasso die hard On Amazon a girlfriend of mine recommended Nick mafia which is actually a pretty interesting for those of you who like I would say finance or financial services and the mob It's a fictional series on a British Russian financier who gets involved with the wrong folks That's a really niche one and an interesting one It's been a great series to watch Succession I'm waiting for season two I mean we all watch Succession And then I would say on the podcast side right now actually I am looking to do separate podcasts about Elizabeth Holmes trial ones to drop out from ABC and the other one is a bad blood from John kiryu who as you know the original kind of journalist on this story So I like listening to smart people It is just keeping your breath done On the trial Really interesting stuff Tell us about some of your mentors who helped shape your career Well first of all my dad I always talk about the fact that he was a doctor but he was also an entrepreneur and he really loved working for himself And I think he made the idea of entrepreneurship so accessible for me Remember he's also the guy who told me to take that trade trip down to New York that led to the job of Merrill Lynch If there was ever a champion of possibilities even small ones all the time it was my father So he is my preeminent mentor for sure And then I think the other group I'd point to is you know I've been lucky to have a lot of great people I worked for they often are my best mentors because they know me well And I know that well All the tried jungle We talked about those four Indian entrepreneurs who started that company that I joined I mean my God they became an angel investors in yodeling my next company they introduced me that opportunity One of them was the first investor in Google So when I made the decision to go to Google and they called me because rob pushed both of us he pushed them to call me and need a considerate And you know when the situation went awry at polyvore the number one person I called was a guy named thank you Harry and I and one of those John boy founders and the one I was closest to to continue to know me and invest in all the companies I founded And I just said what do I do here And he was the one who
