Visibility is on the ballot

"Today were diving into women of color that are on the ballot, and also what candidates and campaigns need to be doing better to reach out to black around and indigenous communities. We have Glenda car, the CO founder President of Higher Heights. So if you listen to our episode before this with State's attorney I, use your bray boy, she was wearing her black women. Lead shirt so that sure comes from higher heights and we have Lynn when the political director for run API I a new initiative that just out of the gates gained so much attention and is doing wonderful work and I can't wait to dive into talking to her about the amazing things that they're doing. But in typical BG fashion, we have to start off the. Conversation by talking about Howard Brown rose got involved in Politics Lynn, let's start with you. What made you want to do this work I met you when you are on Standard Booker's presidential race landward with on my best friends in the booker who has the flow colder actor we immediately had energy I appreciate offer letting even on here I. Think what's so I just? WanNa start. It's it's always a struggle for us like Asian women thinking. Okay. If this is a speech for Black and Brown women do we do we belong in us as organizers in the space that we challenge ourselves on every single day? I, appreciate the all see us as part of his fight Abdu I'm no my start in politics it was in high school. I had to fulfil my community service hours as Eilly volunteer for my local mayor's race. Obviously had no idea what organizing wise what it meant to talk to voters. And it wasn't until our college when I was organizing around development movement was like Oh shit. Okay. So this is what this is but I think what's really interesting is that it's I think for me because I get asked that a lot especially with the next generation of organizers coming in and it wasn't so much like what what started this interest. But it's been in especially in the last few years it's been the women around me that have kept. You know and it's like it's it's I. Think we often you'll so burnt out in this process but it is absolutely been like this networks like very intentional network of women that have kept here. Sorry and we will go to Glenda and it's weird for me. y'All not to see Granddad two or three times a month. That's how often we would just see each other at different events conferences in even when we get on the phone I'm like it's my Glenn like I miss you so much but I'm super excited to have her here. Today Higher Heights. It's an organization that I've been involved with or a long time. Now is an organization that I give a lot of my time my coins as well because that's important the when that's how us what each of this work you know I come from a politically active family I mean I don't think they overtly would call themselves that but others did right and so I am a daughter of a Caribbean immigrant migrated here. My mother picked him up next door literally like WHO's this guy next door and David got married and? Had three children and the baby and my father was a community activist right in. Here's a man that didn't become a citizen until the later part of his life because he wanted to vote for his friend Joe Lieberman and But everybody assumed that he was like he was the political light Caribbean political maker in the community about making sure people registered to vote he was very active in and So was my mother on my eighteenth birthday I'm sure my parents gave me a jewelry because that's what they gave me at every birthday. Don't remember what was didn't don't wear it is but they registered me devote my mother put me in her car drove me down to city hall and registered to vote in until the day she died she called me and my brothers on major elections to make sure we. voted. So it was just kind of ingrained around our civic civic engagement But I thought it was going to be a musician went to Music Conservatory and was Likley engaged on campus. As we all are particularly go to a predominantly white college. There's always some takeover

"Number of people who are going to be doing it. it's the invite only and there's be for the world So we have to take care of that. But it's going to be lives. So is that people can't make and obviously it'd be very very limited capacity but It would livestream. So details will be becoming a a It was important for for for listeners. To know is that it will be livestream and We can I respect that way in a life extremely well live and by champion that the world is the little dinner. Because he's going back you know I was thinking about this the day he died just a few days ago and I don't even know if this is a valid thought or not Abdu because this has not been revealed this is not in the scriptures but you know when somebody famous dies particularly a Christian. You look at Ravi look at who died. Very Young. Some people will say. Oh what did he do wrong to deserve this early fate? And of course Jesus nullifies. That and Luke Thirteen. You can go read about it. He says now. These people were not worth center than you. But unless you repent the this will also happen to you. But we don't often look at it in the reverse. It wasn't a judgment on Ravi or dealer anyone there with Jesus now it may be more of a judgment on us that we haven't been listening enough to people like this and God finally says if you're not gonNA listen to my people. I'm going to bring them home now. Again this is not been revealed. I'm just speculating here. It's that's that's all it is speculation and then I see this yesterday. The Babylon be who is Christian satire sight at a headline that said something like Ravi Zacharias deemed worthy for this world. Or something like that. You know just the way he carries himself and he was a senator just like you and I are. We know that but you know him personally. I know him personally and we can both vouch for the fact that he is the same he. He was the same person offstage stages as he was on the stage. Abdu though he he was question off at so often rocky story. I remember some Elliott Story. But how you're given us off and someone Had invited their friend to come and they sat me audience listening to him. Speak and the friendliest driving home. And they recount disturbing firms home with. What did you think we tally is compellingly delivered with the content? Really something Do you have any questions makes that one? Buster is he really liked that like the private life and Ravi said the really really meant something to him that That question was in the minds of people I never met somebody who was more Uncomfortable with being well known Then Ravi because while he was getting never false humility he also knew that. Sometimes these can be you know facades. He never wanted to be a society always wanted authentic and he was the man on page he was in real life and vice versa You know he's he tweets that message so often that every human being made in the image of God and therefore has an essential worst an objective dignity and value when.

Which we're going to tell you about here in just a minute Abdu. Maria's my guest today. He's the senior vice president of ours. The I am and despite the fact that Robbie has gone to be with the Lord the Organization is going to continue in these talented people are going to continue to bring Christianity in a very thoughtful and winsome way all over the world and they do it through evangelism. They do it through philosophy. They do it through apologetic theology. There's really no other organization like it so if you can support them this month and even going into the future. That would be wonderful but before we get into that. Do I gotta ask you how you answered that question? I mentioned before the break was brilliant. I think he went for maybe seven minutes and you covered women in the church. Lgbtq and also the Canaanites. We can't cover all them right here right now. People can go to the Youtube Channel and see your complete answer. But let's just do women in the church because people think well Christians Put Women in a second class way. That's not true at all. It's not true. It's it's radically untrue. Car Define A book of the Bible the where women actually with resulted in some ways if a rightful place You.

"Talking to thing when there's a former Muslim face and saying that he came from a background different than Christianity. Speak this man because I have to consider from India background Christian. He's fucking. I would be the MO affable person to speak which one that goes his care for the individuals who's asking the question to goes to his wisdom for staying what the questions really out then three giving opportunity for someone else on the team to answer an important question was brand new. I mean I was literally eight hours old in ours. Am if he trusted me with that answer. Well it was a perfect answer and I pray that that young man who got that answer did pursue the truth and that acts seventeen passage. You brought up Abdou where Paul says that God has preordained where people should live so that people will reach out and find him. I think answers a lot of questions with regard to the question. What about those? Who have never heard any of those questions. Which by the way our moral questions you know. They're basically implying that God is somehow immoral if he doesn't get his gospel to every living person and I've heard Dr William Lane. Craig say well it could be that people who never hear the Gospel wouldn't have believed it anyway and that's certainly possible that God has so pre- preordained where people live that. Even those who never hear the Gospel as they had heard the gospel would they wouldn't have believed in it anyway but that was a very astute that you gave your job interview. Went exceedingly well that day and by the way I need to. I need to ask people right now. As soon as this podcast is over you need to go to ours dot org and you also need to go to their youtube channel because you will see so many videos from the college campus and from churches. Where both Ravi Abdou and Vince fatale and others are answering questions and Abdu? I remember an answer. You gave your sharing the stage. I think with Ravi with John Lennox and yourself and maybe one other person and question came. That was so difficult it was like a three prong question about. I want to say it was about women in the church the LGBTQ question. And why did God kill the Canaanites and you had like just a few minutes to answer or the question came to everybody and Robbie just turned to you and said Abdu you got this and right after the break. We'll maybe give a short answer to that because it was a brilliant answer and folks you can see the answer as I say if you go to. The Arzi am Youtube Channel. There are several videos up there that you will see. Ravi and his brilliant but by the way we're coming up to the break here one of the things that I I always tell people about Ravi one of the great insights that that I learned from him was whenever you're answering a question you need to remember that you're really answering a person if you just jump into some wrote answer and you're not trying to discover why that person is asking the question it can be a disaster in. Ravi was so good at that. Abdou she was excellent at it and that That's fence which you the open for the before she answers a question he is giving a verbal hug to the plow. Painted an amazing. We're talking to Abdu Mary. His latest book written with Ravi Zacharias find ways called seeing Jesus from the East. We're having a bit of a tribute to Ravi today. We'll do more right after the break you're listening to. I don't have enough faith to be an atheist with Frank Turk on the American family radio network and we're back in just two minutes. "You in distinction to other world views. If not telling you what you want to hear coming to you what the truth actually And that was a very jarring because that was in my own worldview and every other worldview I encountered with the Bible is very very honest about this among other things and he was talking about. Meaning then you referenced. The clock in terms of meaning and that was connect not this religious to meaning. But if particularly tim the meaning record close relative to meeting. We're talking to Abdu Mary. The senior vice president of Ours Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. Lost a great man this week but the work goes on. We'll talk more about it right after the break on Frank couric back in two minutes. French can you help me with something? Can you go up to tunes or wherever you listen to this podcast and give us a five star review. Why it will help more people see this podcast and therefore then hear it so if you could help us out there. I greatly appreciated last July. My Mentor and Ravi Zacharias Mentor. A man who also instructed Dr William Lane Craig passed away. His name was Dr Norman. Geisler and Ravi Zacharias was so loyal. Deductor Geisler who apparently taught him so much. When Ravi heard the news I think Ravi was in poor or Hong Kong or somewhere in that area of the world. When he heard the news the Doctor Geyser had passed. He got on a plane and he came all the way to Charlotte North Carolina to do the Eulogy for Dr Geisler. And I'll never never forget how he started. He said Ladies and gentlemen we are burying giant today and now we are about to bury another giant Ravi Zacharias himself. You know my guest. Today here is Abdul Mary the Senior Vice President of ours. Abdu I've been thinking of analogies and maybe this is a poor analogy but I think that Ravi Zachariah is is too apologetic X. What Andrea Pacelli is to opera and Andrea Andrea? Bocelli might not be a household name and Rob Zachariah might not be a household name. But when the name comes into your purview. When you hear what a Andrea Pacelli says sings does or Ravi Zachariah says sings. Does you take notice. I don't even like opera. But when I hear Andrea Bocelli I go while and it. It's it's the same. I think with Ravi Zacharias people who don't even know about apologetic. They don't know anything about Christianity when they hear him they go. Wow I need to check into this more. In fact the press secretary of the United States the president of the United States said today or couple of days ago in a video she learned so much from. Ravi checks teared up in the interview because she knew that she didn't have to check our brains at the door. She said when she became a Christian after hearing Ravi at Oxford he is in was just an unbelievable apologist evangelist philosopher and theologian. Tell me about the first time you had the opportunity to share the stage with them. I.

"So there's a lot of this about two hundred zero point, thanks, mostly fruits and vegetables. And then everything else, it's like a lot of points. For example, I begin but I love these burgers about beyond meat. They have these like, you know, vegan like I guess they're supposed to be like hamburgers. Yeah. Had one of those by accident. One time. Yeah. What let me tell you something. Those things are like thirteen points. Mandy third teen points. I was like, wait. What? Meanwhile, if I top you can go into AP I'm gonna type it Walker a Walker. Burger. And you see, like what is, oh, wow. Look a Burger King Walker junior sandwich is ten points. So I'm eating vegan beyond me burger, that's more points than a whopper junior at. So it helped me what I like about. It is not. I don't feel restricted it helped me to eat, more informed. You know what I mean? Like it's not like, hey, Tiffany. You can't have cookie. It's like, hey, if I am going to have a cookie, which is probably the better cookie. Is it gonna be the oatmeal raisin is gonna be the chocolate chip, which actually is, is really contributing to wait for me? You know. And so there was something that really surprised the beyond me because I was housing those things mandate. I was like a Biegel Abdu of the yes, hopeful them. So that leads me. Meanwhile, something has sacked the heck out of me lower bars. Do you know a lot? One Lara bar is nine points. That's a whopper junior as it all the sugar in carb's 'cause you're not getting the protein the. Freeze because it's called freestyle right desire. Oh, I tried Weight Watchers last year. I like the freestyle thing 'cause it's it makes it but it's usually it's basically like celebrating. You get zero points for like, low carb things like so many of those vegan options. I found like vegetarian where they try and replace something with something else. It's like carbs Kurtz carbs in. So I. Yeah. I think that I just really was just so I think it is, I think it's fiber. And so, for example, something has like a lot of sugar. But there's fiber protein, I think it like offsets the sugar, you know, so it just what I like about it. Like I said, I don't feel I don't feel like I'm missing out, definitely those things where I'm like, oh, I do kind of miss like my subway cookie, but the other day on it's very easy for me to have zero point breakfast. Because I all have led through maybe like on laterally exit more. But like. Ex- typically I'll have fruit while had this, like this almond milk. Smoothie has a lot of protein in it or soya milk, smooth. Like, like milk. Spinach, some fruit in a little squeeze the Honey four points. But I can have a very typically by the time lunch rolls were on. I have the majority of my points. So if I decide to have a light lunch, I love sauteed spinach. And you can put a bunch of stuff within and I found this on alternative to, to Newt -als that may like tofu that tastes just like spaghetti regular Pasadena bills. So I use that. And then I found this crumble from whole foods that instead of the the the beyond knee crumble, which is like, you know, ten points, whatever this crumple is one point per serving. And so it actually tastes better in more like ground Turkey than like the whole foods version. So it was just like like this now I had for for lunch. They had a quote unquote hamburger. It was this book burger that I found at whole foods, and they have a scanner on the. Apps. He can scan it beep. So right there. And hopefully I was like ooh, one burger has one point great. And then I had a bun. I think my son I had one of those slap bread buns in it was three points. I was like Lulu..

So then gossip girl shows up and for any of you guys that don't remember her? She was from Ari season. Okay. She got ruled repod with her Jacqueline. It got really dramatic with her towards the end of Ari season because it seemed like she was really into him and he was really into her in the like, you know what? I gotta go to medical school and like this is just not going to be like, I can't like I gotta dedicate myself to medical school, like my career. And then he ran and she ran, but she was like, it's our career. We're star. We're star crossed lovers. 'cause I really want to commit to you, but I'm not going to be able to cause of medical school medical school and now suddenly bachelor in paradise. She's like, you know what? F- medical school any to find my man. They don't even explain like, don't you think we deserve an explanation? Did she drop out of school that we deserve it. She's like, well, like. Who talked like that clay see come up, but it's fires. She does. Oh my God. I was trying to get you to remember the Klay impression for so long and that was it something like that. But she. It's good to be here and she has this really sad face and I'm like, you know, look happy to be here. Why are you wearing a black dress to paradise? It's like, you're so sad. Lighten up. She's like, I'm so happy date card. Wanna go out with me. And babies like on my good. These girls coming in smelling sa- fresh. They don't smell like paradise yet. It's not butts. Okay. But spill beer k. who's gonna want me. Poor Pityana. That's me. I'm Bibiana or so. Jacqueline goes up to the stuffer and Bibi and they're talking and Jenna. They're telling you that, oh, Jena is telling her on Colin sweat that you don't really know about him and tear because like that thing just dating and she's like, well, I don't know if they're dating that's like saying, colty thing. You know, we're working on the name, but right now it's called here and no one wants to drink colty name, but some people order at that way. We're not sure what's going on. So Jacqueline's like basically tell her that she should ask him out. Yes, they're suggestion. They're like, you should totally ask them out because everybody wants to coal them to not be together because they're mcqueen's. Right, right. So Jacqueline like thinking, you know, I was just beaming gravitational blow to him and so see, like goes off after Colton which you know go for the big game. I say. So yes. "Titles academic journals so it's always a pleasure to come across a field guide to finding fossils on mars well the news from afc wimbledon hank do you remember when we did like those dance classes and then we would have to go to those ballroom dances when we were in like seventh grade and do you remember how there was a rule that the boys would have to walk up to the girls and saying like shall we dance or whatever and then the rule was that the girls had to say yes you remember all that i do do you remember how when that happened to me the girls said no they all were guys themselves to say no and it was like devastating and i was thank cried a lot i don't i didn't remember that that's very bad i'm sorry i did not know about that everyone always said yes to me because that was the rule well hank afc wimbledon walked up to dean parrot and said shall we dance offered him a new contract and he said no no he said no dean parrot arguably one of wimbledon's best players said no and instead signed for juuling hammer gillingham i could never remember softer i know it's in the same league they're in league one it's not like they're you know upper level oh come on and they're probably offering a little more money i am a little disappointed though i can't pretend not to disappointed meanwhile jimmy abdu the french player who spent the season at wimbledon who also would have been very useful next season in league one has also decided to move on to a club in the fourth tier in his native france so that means the hank don't even know if wimbledon we don't have a lot of players is what it comes down to going to do a tremendous amount of recruitment to play to play a game of soccer how many.

"I'm carol hills and you're tuned to the world the city of paris seemed far removed from the war on terror until twenty fifteen that's when gunmen attacked the satirical magazine charlie abdu then a few months later came the coordinated assaults at the buttocks on theater and various paris cafes and restaurants the brutal attacks left lives shattered and many parisians core beliefs shaken new yorker writer wendell stevenson was based in paris at the time she set out to write a nonfiction book that would come to grips with the meaning of it all i kept waking up at four in the morning with this this this this this is this is bigger somehow this is not one incident this is a big story this is a big a confrontation a big seismic social event so stevenson decided novel would be better suited to tell the story her main character is a war correspondent catherine kit kit ridge at the beginning of the book when we first meet her involved in two thousand three in the often moth of the eriksson invasion she's really ernest not naive but she is hoping to describe the other describe the experience of iraqis in a way that human and real on can connect them as people to rita's in america newspaper and then by the time we meet up with her again in paris and she is really confronted with a very personal consequences of violence and terrorism when she loses a very close friend in the charlie hebdo attacks you see her shift and she tips over the edge and she really questions a self on her worldview and she's angry she looks for somebody to blame and her question is why should i be tolerant of people who are not told of me and paris had always been the safe spot where the violence and turbulence of of the things she was reporting on never encroached.

"What they want is to simply know that they can confide in u n trust you to respect and be interested in what they have to say i guarantee once you are sincere about inviting your kids to ask any question at any time they'll ask the questions and when they do be ready to stop what you're doing and listen to them don't ignore them don't stay on your phone and answer emails or text your friends dig with your kids wonder with them respond to their questions with a question when you do this your son or daughter will feel very important they'll feel encouraged to think more deeply and they'll feel respected when kids sphere respected and important to their parents they feel loved so keep those conversations a live with your kids so they can learn to think be closer to you and walk away from time with you feeling more loved ii the best way to grow closer to your kids is to ask them questions you'll hear that when ob do speaks to teens and young adults they come in droves many times the crowds that abdu speaks to our standing room only and these are college kids with a lot of questions and sometimes of animosity why is this because abdu has learned to very important skills in reaching people younger than himself he asks them questions rather than correct the people that are asking him questions and just give answers dispense information he listens to the questions he listens to their concerns he respects their ideas and then off an answer their questions.
