How Bad Has the Baby Formula Supply Issue Become?

"As we go into this other issue, the thing that is another thing that came out of this recently that is affecting the economy and affecting people is they look at this and why Joe Biden is so upset that his polling on spad is this issue of baby shortage. The baby formula shortage. Now this came out of a, if you want to see how bad this is actually gotten in a recent meeting with baby formula folks who make baby formula. They all said, we told you that this was going to happen. We told you that if you shut down this plant, this Abbott plant in Michigan, if you shut this down and you don't have a way to make up the difference, there will be a shortage of baby formula. This was understood. Republicans at the time highlighted this. Others highlighted this. This was back in the first of 2022. The Biden administration ignored at CDC in order until all of a sudden to join the other parts of the empty shells, which Allah was the discussion we just had about supply chain shortages that all of a sudden now you have moms who can't feed their babies because there's no formula. And now it's being made and Joe Biden in this meeting in which they said, look, we warned you, Joe Biden had the audacity to simply say, well, y'all may have known, but I didn't know. Okay, they were telling this to the governmental agencies. They were telling this to the people who should be so this tells me one of two things. They're not telling Joe Biden everything, which is scary, especially on a situation that is now reached the level where you see it on every newscast every thing that's going on about this, the baby formula shortage and now that we look and frankly, in many ways, like a third world country, having to import baby formula from Europe and other places because we don't have our supply chain issues, and we don't have something that we actually look forward to. Now, also at the same time, we're still shipping by formula to the illegal immigrants who are coming in across the southern border. This is something that we have to address as it goes forward, but they're just ignoring

Abbott Says Agreement Reached to Reopen Michigan Baby Formula Plant

"Abbott agrees to FDA oversight of Michigan baby formula plant. Look, they signed a consent decree yesterday to reopen the Michigan Abbott plant. That consent decree could have been signed a month ago, Abbott is strenuously protested from the beginning that their infant formula had nothing to do with the infant death being investigated across the country. The FDA was using at moving at its usual snails pace, its bureaucratic morass, plunging the country into a baby formula crisis that is real. So they got an order. It's pretty easy to surmise here what happened. Ron klain or someone from the president's office called over to the FDA and said, open that plant. And the FDA said, how do we save a little face here? I know we'll do a consent decree that says they can open the plant. And so their plant will be up and it's going to take a while.

"Stores running out of the critical item in unable to restock. Baby formula is quickly disappearing from South Florida store shelves, parents are now fighting an uphill battle for their baby's health. It appears the nationwide shortage of baby formula is getting much worse, not the news of moms want to hear. We're going to cover everything you need to know about the formula shortage in 60 seconds. Baby formula has been flying off the shelves in the past few months, and manufacturers can't keep up. One report showed that 40% of baby formula options were out of stock nationwide last month. And in some states, like Texas and Missouri, it's even worse, with more than 50% of formula sold out. Now, some major retailers, including target, CVS, and Walmart have started to limit the amount people can purchase. That is, if you can even find any to begin with. So what's causing these empty shelves? One is something we've heard before. Supply chain issues, thanks to the pandemic. And those issues were made worse when a major U.S. based formula manufacturer called Abbott recalled some of their formula products back in February. The FDA is apparently working around the clock to get that Abbott plant back up and running. But in the meantime, it's been hard and costly to find replacements. The average cost of the most popular formula brands has jumped as much as 18% in the past year. And it's not like we can just start making more. It takes time for manufacturers to get FDA approval to make formula. Homemade formulas can be dangerous, and some formulas from overseas don't have to pass the same standards as domestic products. And that's all causing parents to scramble to feed their babies. If you're one of those parents, talk to your pediatrician, they could have samples you could use in a pinch. Or they'll be able to tell you which other brands are good substitutes. And if you can't switch brands, try looking at local stores instead of big box chains. They might be seeing less traffic and could have some left. You can also take a look at your formulas ingredient list. There could be a generic version of your brand name formula out there. And finally, you might.

"You Gotta question, John. No. One of our listeners. There's a okay Hey, we are back. That's just a little conversation between John and the fellas here as we continue on this Saturday morning. We're back after the Thanksgiving holiday and Brian Main Target Palafox. John Bagnasco. We appreciate you tuning in this talk radio and, of course on Facebook live and John, will we done with their love? Conversation there don't want to miss anything. Well, no. Dale was asking if it's he's up in Humboldt, and he wants to know if it's too late to plant hairy vetch. And what is the answer to that, John? I'm not really sure about humble, too. Usually, it's used as a cover crop, you know, for turning into the soil and heading nutrients to soil later on, and it's usually 30 days before the first frost before the first frost is when you plan it. Um But it just was. It's closer there. Yeah, they could be getting it in a week. I mean, our weather is clear for a while, but it could turn think in two weeks, and then all that is wasted. So the answer is it depends what you're whether you got 30 days. Yeah, maybe. Maybe not. Depends on what the weather does. Okay, Tiger. Let's bring our guest on into get this train that pulls out of the station as they say, eh? So this morning, we have Genesis lose. She's the horticulture director for Sunset Western Garden Collection. Obviously a Abbott Plant. Enter as we mentioned before Gardner in writer as well in this morning, we're gonna be talking with her about familias in general, but I'm also anything else that kind of comes up. So if you have questions, please write them right there on our Facebook broadcast, and we can ask Janet Janet. Good morning. Good morning. You doing well this morning? I am. Thank you. Can yourself doing excellent. Now. You were in the Pacific Northwest right now, Right? Actually, I'm in the Bay area. Oh, yes. Okay, baby. Yes. Okay. How How is it up there right now, Sonny and beautiful insurance, money and beautiful. Yeah, This is the time of year to be in the very people don't realize that. But you guys get those nice, clear days. Not a lot of fog right now, Right? That's right. We've been getting less and less fog. Well, it's just the climate is changing here for sure. Really. Yeah, We even had fog really in years. Oh, wow. So you can see the Golden Gate Bridge, I guess, right? You can see it almost 365 days a year now, That's amazing yet. So you said, you know that And I would say, Plant effect you say planted Go for it. Go for it. All right, all right. You wonder if they have to change the name of the San Francisco fog, Tomato to maybe San Francisco. Clear sky or Yeah, I was gonna say San Francisco is gonna have to rework their whole marketing. Don't bring a jacket to sample. Cisco. Hey, So, Janet, you know, before we get into familias, I want to allow you to tell our listeners about yourself because such a fun story and we did. I don't know if you were hearing our teaser, But we were talking about the Orchid Thief book and how you also tend to go and travel and look for other plants yourself, So I'm sure you know there's some funds instances you have when looking for other plants. Tell us a little bit about your background, though. So I'm actually my my family has been in the horticultural seed and vegetable seed business since the early 18 hundreds. So I'm sixth generation. I kind of say that it's in my blood. And if you cut me, I bleed Green s O. I have all that that background. But, you know, growing up in California. It's the drought has always been, You know, water. Wise has always been an issue, and that's always been a big important push for sunset. So I primarily look for plants around the world in other Mediterranean type climate, So I go to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa on DMA, edit Iranian countries and look for other plant material to bring here to California for the sunset collection. So I get to work with people all over the world and, you know plants. That people are all pretty much great people that work with so I'm pretty lucky that way. Now. Would you say that? Because people I don't think realizes, and I you know, since you travel all around the world, see anything the market for plants. Is the United States a big market or are other parts of the world even bigger than the United States per capita Europe is by far the most. They use plants more than any other personal. And when you say Europe are you talking? What part of you being here at Western, you know, being got taken that have a they have a long history of horticultural in general, and they even that's you know, living in the Netherlands. Buying plants buying houseplants buying cut flowers is part of your Normal routine. So what They use a lot more plants, and they're also you know, it's interesting because there's so many people who look at Germany and Italy in those countries. France how many people live in a relatively tight area? They're they're much more dense than we are here in the United States assed Borras, You know how many people per square Maior living in an area But they buy way more plants and we do so we have more yard and we use with plants. You know, when we were in when we were in England, I did notice like their their desire to have different plants, unique plants or just plans that don't even succeed. And they just are that, you know. Hey, I'm gonna use this for three months, four months and then throw it away, And it's something that here and you know the You know, Southern California like, Oh, it has to live for 20 years. I don't feel successful. Their mindset is way different When it comes to plants. They Truly do treat them as a benefit to their life in their home. Not just Oh, this has to be around forever. Otherwise, they don't feel like used it. All right. You can't throw away the feeling upset sort because it might bloom again. So my favorite stories I had someone who she was actually a really high powered executive at Time Inc at the time, and she had gotten an orchid as an office president. And when I met her that was her question to me. It was. How do I get this working to rebuild? And I said, you throw it away. Buy a new one and she looked at me. Oh, thank you. I just needed someone to give me permission to do that. People have this moral guilt about killing plants, and we need to get over that, you know, Best die for no reason. Even I kill plants. I kill lots of plants. Oh, yeah, Well, I'm sure you're trying all kinds of new stuff, So I'm sure you probably kill more than most. It's a bouquet of flowers. You'll throw it away after a week. But if it's another orchid that's been blooming for two months, and you even paid half of the class is the bouquet of never throw it away. So so that sunset. You guys do focus on a lot of the Western Garden style. So, like you say, the zero escaping low water style gardens. Um, you know, But today we're gonna be talking about communities and ah, lot of people think familias and is a is gonna be these high water plants. Um, what do you have for those people when they're talking about planting communities and azaleas? They are sadly mistaken. I will say that I fall into the category of gardener who kind of poo pooed chameleons. In fact, when I bought my house I top down my Camelia tree. But they're incredibly tough plants, and that's why we see them. So established in California. We actually sponsor a lot of water trials with the UC system. So it U. C. Davis and you see a refinery run irrigation trials. We have some of our community is running in those trials right now because he wanted to be able T to prove to people that they actually are relatively low water plant once they're established. So they take a little bit longer to get established. I would say, you know you're looking at the three years to get the root system and maybe even a little bit longer on some of the real four compact varieties. But once they're established, they Congar Oh,.
