"It has been mostly sunny and nearly ninety degrees on great Abaco island in the Bahamas today the catastrophic wind and rain of hurricane Dorian have moved on to the Carolinas it is hard to find words to describe the devastation left behind one of the co resident told the Miami Herald that when he emerged after the storm all the churches were gone the death toll currently stands at twenty that is expected to rise thousands of people are homeless and children need a place to go to school those children were on the mind of Hubert menace his prime minister of the Bahamas when I reached him today in Nassau. hundreds of children hello what if the industry sometimes of the education no school opens on Monday and that's what that would be a challenge to us so that would happen to make a determination transferring many of the children yet to complete their education when you say I'm bringing the transferring the children you mean bringing them to Nassau and another cities that were not hit. after my certain members yes you can map so that they can temporary stage that I look back on the road at the education of our program I'm a defense and that we get you sound chips back into school as quickly as possible and then in terms of the physical destruction we have been watching pictures come and that our heart breaking of of you know the buildings washed away docks washed away the airports under water. "In our boats tossed like confetti. The images belie the obvious question. How could anyone anyone survive this pulse and your the growth we arrive by helicopter in mana war and avocado with billy aubrey embracing his wife shana sean after days of not knowing if she was dead or alive shawna hunkered down with friends in their seaside home until the roof we off and they all scramble to find find anything so nancy. This is what kept you guys alive. This little this little rock this came in hover dow in shauna was on the ground and we were just trying to what did it sound like in here. At the time it was up. There was a lot of crashing eh crashing and whirling stuff coming on this wall. So many in the apple islands lived through hours that resembled unmoved a horror movie exposed to wins that top two hundred fifteen miles an hour like tornadoes touching down every minute describe describe. It wish nobody words can describe it. They could never eric cantor is categorized. Never my grandfather was like a bomb went off residents here. Tell me their little island in paradise is unrecognizable even to them. They're resourceful and self reliant they say but they could have never imagined a storm as powerful as doreen and there's no better way to describe to you. The force of hurricane doreen to be right here where people rode out the storm in their living rooms and their dining rooms. I mean look in this. The roof blew off the house here. The entire kitchen king down there refrigerator ended up here on the ground there living room and dining furniture is strewn all over people described these things being tossed around the island like projectiles they all coward hovered in their bathrooms and closets anything they could find to take shelter. There are now the beginnings of recovery but only the basics medical attention private helicopters to take out those who are sick the elderly young families. I'm sure it'll never be the same again i i but i mean the people are strong and we're going to try to do our best through a bill the best way we can but we know <hes> it'll never be the same. This was a storm of biblical proportions abba conan's tell me and yes they worry it will take a miracle to recover from it. Jake think about everything that we just heard everything we saw so you can repeat that thousands of times over spoke to a man from another island in arbuckle told me that there was a storm surge he had gone under his son reached out to hold them up. He really wanted to let go. He couldn't take anymore but he said no. I'm not gonna let my son see me die this way and he got himself out of there so jake so tough paula you were not supposed to spend the night on the avocado islands so what happened so so we're at the staging area here in nassau and their flights everywhere they just couldn't get us back with the way the air conditions the airline traffic the helicopter traffic. Obviously there was a problem. It's so difficult. Jake on the island was on. I mean they cleared the baseball field so that we could bland so that we could get ourselves billion and get to that kind of reunion and get some supplies as in so we had to stay there. These people men were they'd been through so much and yet they didn't blink an eye. We said we'll sleep on the beach will sleep on the grass. We don't care no. They took choson and a special. Thank you to marcia and angel cruz. I know they have relatives in florida. Thank you so much and what we saw. There is what people are grappling playing with right now of course jake. They're thankful thankful for being alive <hes> but when you see the way they are living i mean they took all the food out of the refrigerator. The cruises cooked it. That's all they really have. They have some more provisions in the grocery store but they're wondering what comes next their kids are supposed to start school and it's things like that that this island's beginning to grapple with and jake. There's more more on this island. Things were fairly under control. People are starting to worry about things like disease. They hear the death reports say that will inevitably go up and they are starting to worry about encore un recovered bodies things that call so much to worry them at this place and as they told us on the island they worry that they won't be able to return at least not not in a fashion that they were there now living there fulltime all newton in nassau the bahamas. Thank you so much for that powerful report we appreciate it.

Hurricane Dorian may hit Florida with storm-surge flooding

"Forecast hurricane during bringing those tropical storm conditions along the northeast coast of Florida as you just heard but flooding and storm surges the issue at the moment could be a hazard as Dorian marches up the east coast let's get more now from correspondence or tomorrow this storm is that parallels the Florida coast is going up the eastern seaboard and it's expected to battered Georgia South Carolina and North Carolina so the actuation orders go from here all the way up to the Outer Banks now officials in those communities are urging people to also evacuate that's why we're hearing this evacuation numbers topping two million overnight and other state of emergency signed by president trump this one for North Carolina three Marshall ABC news is someone a beach Florida let's check in with NBC radio national correspondent bills and for he's also tracking Dorian and can we say Florida has been spared yet the bill. I don't think so Joe because while the it will not make a landfall there right now this the center of this storm remains about a hundred miles off the coast but what we are now seeing is that the storm has expanded even though it has weakened a little bit with maximum sustained winds of a hundred five miles per hour we now have hurricane force winds extending sixty miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extending a hundred seventy five miles from the center and these heavy rain bands are now almost halfway across the Florida peninsula so you have by areas like Jacksonville getting really dumped on with heavy rains a Saint Augustine Daytona beach are they are getting some heavy rain out of this and one thing to keep an eye on here is I'm seeing some embedded hurricanes are a type of tornadoes rather embedded within this better popping up every now and then so far I haven't seen any making landfall they've been out off the coast but another thing to worry about so storm surge flooding gonna be a big issue for Florida they have not escape this as of yet there is right now this storm I like I said remains parked off the coast but is dumping some pretty heavy rain all the way in as far as past Orlando so it really is affecting quite a big area of Florida right now and guess what you know we got more names to worry about here because in the latest report from the national hurricane center we have two new tropical storms Ferdinand in the Gulf of Mexico that should it made but threaten us South Texas with a lot of rain but it should dissipate rather quickly one to keep an eye on here is Gabrielle which just hit tropical storm status this morning it is in the mid Atlantic right now between Africa and the Caribbean those are the kind that really generate into major storm so keep an eye on Gabrielle and the forecasters are watching a tropical wave expected to come off the coast of Africa were no where near done with this busy time of year this brings. Kerry stuff I mean I you know I I know we always get hurricanes but it just seems like these these storms are getting bigger and bigger in our little monsters. yeah yeah well I you know this is the first time since we begin with since we've been keeping satellite data that we have had a category five storm for four years in a row in the Atlantic so there is some credence to that when you think it's not just your imagination that the storms are getting nastier it is true Dorian of course was a category five one hit the Bahamas by the way we're beginning you'll get some looks at the Bahamas and those islands Abaco island great Bahama island total devastation the death toll at seven and that's expected this bike okay thank you NBC radio national correspondent
