"Too. Coming up to shower. NASDAQ futures rally thanks to earnings from Amazon and Apple. Intel and Roku shares sell off on disappointing quarterly results. Big oil in the spotlight this morning with Exxon and Chevron reporting. And Janet Yellen says the U.S. economy is slowing, but not in a recession. A former New York State Supreme Court Justice has been sentenced for taking bribes plus flooding in eastern Kentucky has left at least 8 people dead. I'm Michael Barr, more ahead. I'm John stash Aaron Ford, Aaron judge, strikes again a home run barn of the 9th inning, giving the Yankees a one zero win over Kansas City. That's all straight ahead on Bloomberg daybreak. On Bloomberg 11 three O New York, Bloomberg 99 one Washington D.C., Bloomberg one O 6 one Boston, Bloomberg 9 60 San Francisco, Syria's exam one 19 and around the world on Bloomberg radio dot com and via the Bloomberg business app. And good Friday morning, I'm Nathan Hager. And I'm Karen Moscow, and U.S. stock index futures are higher this morning. We are coming up to 5 O one on Wall Street and we check the markets every 15 minutes throughout the trading day, on Bloomberg. S&P futures have 25 points. Now, futures have 65. NASDAQ futures up a 130 the tax in Germany's up 7 tenths of a percent. Ten year treasury down 8 30 seconds yield 2.70% and a yield on the two year 2.86% Nathan. No, Karen, the lift we're seeing in NASDAQ futures this morning follows earnings from two tech giants. Let's begin with Amazon. Those shares are surging nearly 12% this morning after the company reported revenue that topped estimates and gave a strong sales forecast for the current quarter. Bloomberg intelligence senior retail analyst put them goyle says it's quite a different story than another high profile retailer. We were not worried about what we saw earlier this week with Walmart taking down guidance as we had thought that Amazon has a different customer base. Amazon does a target the low income consumer. So we didn't think Walmart's votes would bleed into Amazon. And that's exactly what we saw today. Bloomberg intelligence analysts put them goyle says Amazon added full and part time jobs at the slowest pace since 2019 in an effort to cut costs. Well, Apple shares are also higher, Nathan, they're up almost two and a half percent. The company's revenue and profit narrowly top estimates with iPhone sales holding up better than expected. Tom Giles is an executive technology editor for Bloomberg news. The market took away that Apple so far is weathering the downturn relatively well. And they even though they missed on a couple of their different products, they did surpass Wall Street's projections on the iPhone, which is their biggest product, all important product. Bloomberg's Tom Giles says the iPad also performed better than feared, though other products, including max and wearables fell short of projections. We'll have more on Apple and Amazon coming up shortly when we speak with gene Munster, the cofounder of Luke ventures. On the flip side of the tech story, Karen shares of Intel are down more than 9% in early trading, the chip maker's profit in sales missed estimates, and it's also slashing forecasts. Let's get more from Bloomberg's Charlie pellet. The world's biggest maker of computer processors was weighed down by a steep drop in demand for data center chips and a steep decline in PC shipments. After two years of growth, spending on laptop and desktop machines is declining quickly, as rising inflation is leading consumers to shy away from large purchases. The market for chips that power PCs is still Intel's biggest source of revenue and the cash needed to fund an ambitious attempt by CEO pat gelsinger to restore the company to semiconductor industry leadership. In New York, Charlie palette Bloomberg daybreak. All right, Charlie, thank you. We have another stock getting hammered this morning. Roku shares her plunging 25% the maker of streaming TV devices reported disappointing second quarter results, Roku set advertisers are pulling back on spending due to economic concerns. The earnings continue today, Karen with big oil in the spotlight, Bloomberg's Jeff Bellinger reports ExxonMobil and Chevron post quarterly results this morning. There could be a lot to like when ExxonMobil reports, Bloomberg intelligence says the company likely saw a substantial increase in net earnings from its refining unit if that drove a major improvement in free cash flow it could mean faster share buybacks, refining improvements at Chevron likely lagged behind ExxonMobil, BI says the company's balance sheet may be in a net cash position before the end of the year if it continues to hold back on share repurchases. Jeff Bellinger, Bloomberg daybreak. All right, Jeff, thank you about turning to the economy now. There's a key report coming up before we wrap up the week. The University of Michigan issues its national consumer sentiment index for July at 10 a.m. Wall Street time and Bloomberg's Vinny del giudice reports. The prayer report covering early July showed long-term inflation expectations declined at that time at least the consumer survey anticipated prices would rise at an annual rate of 2.8% over the next 5 to ten years. Today, we're pushing 9% inflation. Overall consumer sentiment is suffering with the University of Michigan index at historic lows. Any doubt should ice Bloomberg daybreak? Vinny, thank you in that sentiment report comes a day after the latest GDP data fired up the debate over whether the U.S. has slipped into a recession. One top official says no. Let's get the latest live from Bloomberg's we're gonna need a young good morning granita. Good morning, Nathan. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen is rejecting the notion that the U.S. has entered a recession. She points to continued job creation, gains in consumer spending, strong household finances, and growth in business. Although she acknowledges a slowdown is needed to tame inflation. We know there are challenges ahead of us, growth is slowing globally, inflation remains unacceptably high. And it's this administration's top priority to bring it down. Treasury secretary Janet Yellen says she remains optimistic about the country's ability to fight inflation. Live in New York, I'm ranita young Bloomberg daybreak. We need to thank you. We also have news on the geopolitical front. This morning, President Biden and Xi Jinping have now agreed to set up an in person meeting in Bloomberg said Baxter has the details. This could be interpreted as a positive sign that dialog could remain open, but tensions remain high with words like constructive left out of the readouts. White House spokeswoman Karen Jean Pierre says Taiwan was a major issue. President Biden underscored that the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status. Also mention of the readouts efforts to fight climate change and protect the global macro economy. In San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter Bloomberg daybreak. Basically, why we're talking about it is the Justice Department just announced new limits on those chokeholds, But they're saying, you know, you can do it if a police officer feels the life is in jeopardy. But isn't that the case with, you know, deadly force In every situation? A police officer cannot use deadly force unless they feel like their life is in danger When we talk about George Floyd or Eric Garner. Or the no knock warrants when it comes to Brianna Taylor. You know, these are the situations were talking about. It doesn't sound to me like any of these laws really have changed, But the number to call is 2575396. Let's go to Robert. They have to work with cops on a daily basis. Um, this this what? This that you came down isn't going to do a thing. What you really need to do is you need a statute in your state. A special prosecutor state which, uh, gives an elected official the power to appoint a special prosecutor. Um and then before Look, nothing's going to change until some of these cops start going away to the big house. Absolutely. It's never going to look at look at here. Steve Wolfson is effect. Lys Week. Uh, district attorney. He's just in it for the pension, and I don't disagree with Steve Wilson. You need a special prosecutor statute, which gives the governor of the authority to appoint a special prosecutor when he deems it necessary to prosecute these cops. I'm not disagreeing with that. I think there's definitely a third party and I have to. I have to ask you, though. I don't disagree, either. John, I have to ask you a question. Are you going to be at our event? October 2nd. I'm going to try a J. D. I'm going to give you a chance to save face that $100 you clearly Omi. Why don't you give it the rocks Dan, and then you can get a tax deduction and I won't call you move. Just if that I think that's very fair. Actually, he's giving you a very fair offer. Here's the deal. I will. I will. I will give her $100. But it will not be because of any bet that I owe you. Because I don't believe that joke is that Joe Biden legitimately won the election. We're not going to do just that simple. I don't. Okay. So, John, let me and the reason I'm not paying these bets out is because if I do then it's an admission of Joe Biden win the election. Donald Trump. I will. I have no problem. Hold on paying Roxanne $100 in kind and covering that. Is that a verbal boxes? Did you want to do that, John? I guess. Okay, Let me ask. You can't get somebody Speaking of that's J D. I really love calling your mood. Your dead data bum. That's fair. That's fair over Donald Trump get more than 15% of the black vote. Because we did make a bet on that shady. He did not. But again that Blake as well, That number is totally fake. That's fake, based based on the results, obviously, and there's there's a reason why every single ballot in Pennsylvania right now is being subpoenaed. That happened. Yes, by the way, what? When, uh, for those that bet on the Baltimore Ravens they want they're not going to pay. That's out because Baltimore should have won that football game. And but the Raiders wanted over time, but that was fake. That was fake news. Anyway, Let's go ahead. But I wanted to just respond to John is that you're absolutely correct. As I do believe that the D A is all Just Works too closely with the police departments, and there needs to be some independence and separation there of some sort. And in our just recently, um, Bill that was passed. Um, I'm not sure if it was Senate Bill 50 or Assembly Bill. Yeah, anyway, one of those bills. The attorney General Aaron Ford has right that he can intervene as that third party so that it's not just upon the D A. You say whether or not gotcha. Policemen get prosecuted Self 2575396 the number to call She's Roxann McCoy, the president of the local Las Vegas ACP. Let's go to Bob. Bob is next on the Vegas Take What's going on Bob Bob morning. If Derrick show Vin had wanted to subdue or even be checked off at at, uh, His victim. Um, you know, maybe he could have maybe he would of like, Put his neck is neon his neck for, like a minute and say, Don't ever mess with me again. Look what happens to you, but he didn't do that. And i got one right on down nice script but i got all the colors everything but so i got a new theory if you super saturate the house with something that keeps disappearing eventually like readers like those little glasses if you get enough of them and and eventually everywhere you look. They'll be a g to pin or a pair of reading glasses. And so you'll never have to worry about it again. So now. that's what i do. I saturate the house with fix tool kits g. Two pens that kinda thing. I already bought us in there. This is exactly. This is because we are family. I have three boxes. I have three hundred of these pens and black. And i have forty eight yeah rainbow saturating house there in early. The raymond everywhere. I got the whole rim. I'm not going to get the twenty. The eight different ones bigger pack than that. You know i have this fantasy that i'm gonna develop really good penmanship and use my beautiful fountain pens. I even by letter press card stock with my name on it and my address having this fantasy that someday i am going to write cards. Thank you notes. And i and i never. I still have everything that i i bought. I went out and bought fifty. There's still on amazon. You can still buy it I wanted a better penmanship. so amazon. had reproductions of these penmanship. Books from the turn of the last century. Oh they still sell them. It's called spencer syrian. Do you know spend syrian. Did you. What did you learn in school. You went to in the uk. They must have taught you good penmanship. Right up he's muted. You're sitting on the mute button sir. Yeah no we curse of a school. Cursing quite literally beaten. But when i was taught was a modified spencer spencer has what like abraham lincoln would have written in these very florid. Let me see if i can find this. It was. I mean. Honestly my handwriting. These days is worse than the doctors. Say in design miso. My it's like a guerilla wrote it like riding knows. I have notes everywhere. I find them random about notebooks. I still like writing But look at this. Look at this. Wouldn't you like to be able to write like that. That was the penmanship love to but the amount of time that it would take these dogs. Starting time you know after about thing. I love to be as well trained in martial arts. Jackie chan but i don't feel like spending eight hours a day five years to be able to train it right like i just want still not gonna. I'm still waiting for the allows you to do it right. Like coca cola is in spence. Aaron ford the ford logo. That's unspent syrian. And i bought this these reproduction on amazon of these books with all the workbooks and i started. But yeah never you. Don't even sign checks anymore. I don't know why you know this is replaced at the palmer method. This is what you were taught in school. The pom method right. Yeah yeah it's ugly anyway just another fantasy now. The thing i'll never do. I can say up to forty years of of of pounding. A cable than my handwriting is awful very badly. That's why i wanted you know. That's that's why i wanted to like do it right. Learn it anyway. Leo right in the great novel a shopping list for apples and oranges at the grocery store writing full scold and seven years ago. We ran outta potato chips today. I shall sally forth. We all talk about diy and like oh. We really wish apple wouldn't make these phones with everything glued in and disposable but the question is will you buy a product that has screws in it is thicker is repairable. I wou i miss the days. When you get a phone that you could replace the battery for. I want to have a backup battery place where. I don't have to carry a battery brick. I have to carry battery bank with me. I wished i could swap out batteries or do a hard reset when your iphone freaks out on you you gotta let it die wait nine days prey to four people and then put an a steam room for two comeback orange. These wouldn't be as beautiful in thin and light and maybe it could be stuck on but not stuck on with something that you're never going to be able to get off without like some sort of heat gun. They could stick it on. It was still take it apart. This is not like they're doing it because that's the easiest way to do it. I did foolishly bags safe battery. That was what do you think of it. Leo koala backpack sticky. Yeah it's got a magnet in it and it goes right. I should have brought it. I have it at home. I go but it's ninety nine dollars. And here's the depressing thing it's made to fit on all iphone twelve so the mini all the way up to the pro max at. It's just a little award on the pro max. It fills up the size of the mini. But it doesn't have much juice in it so only charge the promex like halfway like you get fifty percent more battery life with sticky on like i shook the phone rang can shake it off. I'm not even work hard odd though you know what the on really nicely if you're going to buy the puck. You know the mag charger which is like thirty bucks This can also work as a puck.
