"One show on the weekends, typically, but certainly on primetime in the evenings. Now, we'll be up against... There are never wrong over there at Media Matters. Media Matters for America, they call themselves. Their Media Matters is for un -Americans, and I don't know how they survive their tax status of a non -profit organization. Well, I do. The IRS is out to get conservatives, not reprobates. So, that Saturday, then Sunday this weekend, the half of the show will be me. Me, myself and I, all three of us, and the our buddy, Stephen Miller, who runs a wonderful legal organization, AFL, America First Legal. But I wanted to mention that because those are two separate shows, same format, same host. p 8 .m. Eastern time, both days. I know there's a lot of football, there's a lot of stuff going on, and it's an easy way to that, resolve since you can't be in two places at the same time you set your DVR. For both shows, as far as the eye can see. Then you can watch it whenever you want. They're going to be killer shows. Number two, next my book, The Democrat Party Hates America, which we've been talking about a little flavor here and there for two months, maybe more. The entire book will be out, and we'll have an entire discussion about the grave threat that we are facing as freedom -loving Americans. And we talk about this all the time, ideas of consequences, and in our case right now, their ideas, the consequences are the destruction of your way of life, your liberty, your

The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign That Saved the 2020 Election

"Deniers for things you would claim you were concerned about. Here's this article. This is that time when the Democrats advertised. This is Carrie Lake tweeted this out yesterday. It's what got me thinking about this. I'm not trying to, you know, one upper, by the way. So don't take this the wrong way. Team Carrie Lake. But this is an article we talked about two or three times, and she got me thinking about this. She was like, listen, read this article. This is the Democrats game plan on how they cheat. It's called The Secret History of the Shadow Campaign that saved the 2020 election. I'm only going to read to you a little bit of it, not a lot, because reading on the air is like the worst thing possible. hosts I hate when do that. Let me read to you a 600 -word treatise. No, it's not. But this part's important. This is where they describe the conspiracy and the players and what they were planning on doing. It's just one paragraph. It says, There was a conspiracy unfolding behind the scenes, one that curtailed the protests. They're talking about Floyd, the George Floyd protests, and coordinated the resistance from CEOs. Both surprises were the result of an informal alliance between left -wing activists and business types. The pact was formalized a in terse, little -noticed joint statement from the Chamber of Commerce and the AFL -CIO published on Election Day. And that's interesting, right? They used to be rivals. Chamber of Commerce versus the unions. Both sides would come to see it as sort of an implicit bargain inspired by the summer's massive, sometimes destructive racial justice protests, in which the forces of labor came together with the forces of capital to keep the peace. Here's the money and line opposed Trump's assault on democracy. So here they're laying it out. This piece is long. I'm just reading you small slivers of it. But it talks about the conspiracy to interfere in the 2020 election, a very down to earth, regular kind of average everyday Joe terms, business titans, government, labor unions, left wing donors, left wing activists, the Chamber of Commerce,

Biden WH Worked With DOJ, Archives on FBI's Raid of Mar-A-Lago

"So it appears that the Biden White House and the Department of Justice coordinated to obtain AFL points out Trump records and perhaps created a pretext for the law enforcement raid by way of a special access request Now what's wrong with that The statute for the special access request authorizes special access request to an incumbent president Biden Only only when the records in question are needed for the conduct of current business of The White House Now what does that mean It means let's say a president leaves office and he takes some records with him which they used to do regularly Nixon was paid $18 million for his records before they passed the presidential records act just so you know And you have documents that are currently signed by presidents and cabinet secretaries and Supreme Court Justices all those documents now have to be kept by the government But in the past you can take them with you You get salad and do whatever you want with them But there's a special access statute Only a sitting president Can seek records from a past president And only for quote the conduct of current business of The White House So what does that mean Biden could not have a special access document request to get documents for the Department of Justice He could only do it for his own White House meaning we don't understand how this computer works We don't understand why president Ernie grabowski made this decision on this issue

Joe Biden Lies That He Cut the Deficit by $350B

"Joe Biden takes responsibility for nothing Then he starts yelling Like a lunatic But he is a lunatic Let's go Let's listen to some of this He was talking to his buddies at the AFL CIO convention in Philadelphia Well I'm from Philadelphia I've got a lot of friends in the AFL CIO And they despise him Kawan go By the way Republicans like to portray me as some kind of big spender We have spent a lot of money Let's compare the facts Under my predecessor the deficit exploded Raising rising every single year And all of the benefit going to the top 1% basically Under my plan last year we cut the deficit by 350 billion So let's think rationally here which he's incapable of Exploding the deficit to help the top 1% So what happened What does he even mean by that The tax cuts mostly went to the bottom not the top And it's time we stop lying about this There are people in the poor end of the spectrum You'll get tax rebates We've never paid a penny in taxes He says we cut the deficit by 350 billion He didn't cut the deficit by two cents

Ian Prior Previews PPRA Toolkit for Parents

"One of the organizations American legal is involved in confronting this too Ian prior works with American legal as by the way does my wife colleague there And how are you How are you doing Mark Thanks for having me I'm doing great I thought it was better that you help explain what you folks are doing to empower parents to fight this cancer that is spreading from public schools to private schools to even religious institutions Yes that's right Well we have a lot We have a lot on our plate but one of the things that we've been focused on especially over the past month or so is our PPA toolkit that's the people protection rights amendment that protects them people rights amendment which really is a federal law that allows parents to go in and inspect instructional materials that are at their schools whether it's classroom materials curriculum even teacher trainings and it also prevents schools from putting out these surveys without giving parents an opportunity to opt out It was surveys that talk about sexual identity religious beliefs political beliefs et cetera A lot of parents have certainly taken advantage of the freedom of information act But what we've seen throughout schools across the country is schools are trying to really get around their foia obligations by charging massive amounts of money to parents that are trying to get these documents And so what we did was and it's on our website AFL AF legal dot org is we put together this toolkit that allows parents to go out there and file these PPA requests with their school to get behind that curtain of what is going on once you send your kids to those two doors

"You'd rather have that person as opposed to the person mexico's decision. Who all i'm saying. Is that you go to leave the band. Seen for certain circumstances you can get the other gordon. This three duffy don't you. Don't you want three fantastic decision-making empires walk if you can get one good decision making to can probably tell the law and i'd be happy with that of a fan of riser. Aren't coming to write this shots. That's all i'm saying it was just. It's just a question out there that every we have the same have the same question. Yeah that's fair. We have the same question every year are now we have every and i'm going to say the same thing along the bounce. A lock to thaad unlike the randomness of the whole thing when it goes out of the circle big deal. Oh just shut up on. It's a reasonable bowl up to be fair stopping. Football's no fe. Get the good with the bad. Just deal with it anyway. We move our the captain's reviews another one here. These bringing captains review where the captain can challenge which pushing out on this was. This was joey. Montana brought up after what after what game after have guess. What club do you reckon brought this up. The handbag has been talk about three weeks earlier. Exactly right but the whole point is now kept cole him. Sorry now you've got eighteen minutes to play the game plus hormone eighty minutes. It's as simple as that. Yes you win the game in that time frame. Thank you go late. Have the issue every other sport has has a review or a challenge. Or something. Like that wakkanai though. We're not as as oc figure out what the bowl was touched over the law and a half to figure out if fleet to fingernail. Could you imagine that call. I follow every other sport. It has unique otherwise we just kind of feel like another guy. Mississippi's the whole. Getting rid of the center. Circle you've got to leave the center circle in the whole double circle thing is saved so many records correze because if you have a look in the old days with i used to run from virtually cinema half back and claude into a java. That's that's been one of the best things that saved korea's say recommends career injuries have gone to virtually nothing size. Should know what you're saying but not should the afl ground now come with agreed liat formation so we can calculate exactly how many squares the ball is moved to eradicate twenty think. Sometimes you just do these two.

Ri- on saturday just absolutely having a may of time dancing. The bowl going going up high enough bouncing left bouncing raw. Just wasn't doing the right thing. So the question is do we want umpires who are bouncing or do we want to encourage pies good decision makers to just throw the ball up lay balance in once again on telling you. Now it's because of the bowls have not been kicked in. We know we know that there is a serious umpire shortage out there because they can't ban standards. So what do we want what. They're not doing it because bale's peps i'm just saying i'm just saying pips because getting the best decision makers. Are we getting the best balances wanted. We want athletes knows. We're not getting the mayan throwing up bordering here anymore of had enough of these to by all of won't this is the thing at the start of the nfl. Start any game at the start of any fall. The tell me you don't get the hayes on the back of your next standing up wayne dump rises and he walks in and he just goes thud and the bogus right up in the as one of the one of the moments of the season. It's the first thing that they show on every single hall like rainfall die. Now this is what a lot embroiled zabol up and then you hear nothing because it's not the bowl hitting the deck. It's being thrown up in the air. Now you've got to laze some traditions. You know. I'm sorry we've taken so many traditions.

And unfortunately it's hand todd. This club moving forward now. What do you reckon listeners. Do agree it did. I go to. Did they go to hard. What they call us g leaving macy's on the chat. Put it on the facebook pies latest now because i often are warranted but the only thing that don brought down on the wrong thing by calling all the applies to cape finishing mid table. If you've got a loss and build a again but north of think north in the position but we'll get to that in a moment we will my other one guys to una wack wack my iron trod hips if for. I'm gonna wake myself the next forty minutes this podcast gonna just whack yourself for the next forty minutes well court adelaide supporters much in the same way of richmond grove. It's a guy it's around three eighty sack kenny. You need to start talking about ending. Correze of hamish It's not the unpaid is fall will just clearly applied and it is what it is. Do not get upset. at ron. three every club loses is powerful bowl. Autosport you just move on. If it's a if it's a theme guy crazy but anyway running for three more years. I get used to it. Just it's forty. You can't wait a mole didn't you didn't you. Didn't want pets. Took a phone one. Follow on pips. J. w. s. applied. Close the door closed. The guy put behind all doors at maxwell smart when you walked into Into into spot. Division that premium windows a long long way away now it is too many. It's really feel sorry for the giants to a degree because they've just lost so many players through injury through free agency. If you the least of who's lift even probably the last threes. Yeah you can't come back from that. It's just it's just why to hod The they missed that flag guy. I fell probably bought themselves. I really wish. I would have taken that one high waist future Aren pips surround sound on board or notch. Maybe maybe we'll give you these long getting through because you start pips are that's probably the only siren putting it on the record right now. Captain obvious coach. Watch watch leeann camera. Save goodness gracious. That that that was that was the prediction that stabbed the that he was going to be the first one. The guy laura. Let's get into it or now we are going to talk about the one There's upsets we're gonna get into these phone. But johnny brought it up. And i hope for the simply should north cape good fraud. I know what happened on fraud. I know it was an debacle other than anyone saw that coming. Thirty nine to one hundred sixty seven western bulldog limbaugh hundred and twenty points. It was an absolute massive. Big juicy brucie. Kicks tain east. I ten for for for alone on but it was. It was an absolute massacre was forty two to four hundred when it comes to story schultz thirty one mo inside fifty s. This is ridiculous. They only average only had nineteen. He has for the game. That's the thing that blew. My mind is nineteen hips. they ranked seventeenth alleviates. And so they won. The clearances bought thirteen. Hell hesitate to do that. It's as simple as midfield. I'm worried about the iran. Rochman just rose to everybody else. They wrote to the opposition markman. That good is a midfield. I just wanna cada. And they i to get to the bowl of an idea. I kicked twenty five goals. Fraud the average for the sixteen point. Three so there. They've added an extra thirty percent thirty forty percent on what they normally do on the weekend. That was that was brutal. What he's gonna talk about bags very very shortly because all think is nothing better when you say going because when i kick three or four a big deal but when i get to you know we talked about bags. Bags is more than faw's because if you can't hold it in your hand one two three four five in need another hand that we're going to get bags six pluses a bag. You can get to seek us now. Seventh all want. The when brucie was climbing to get to that tenth. All my goodness if your football purist you'd have just absolutely loved us and the smallest 'cause he has copd. Since he's turned up at the bulldogs he hasn't flowery wilson qaeda yet. It was good to see him because they can share. Around to absolutely dominated troll was magnificent out of the middle that whole midfield. The back lawn had to go and do an extra session. Because i had to get the today leagues because i know what that would normally do during a guy i didn't you know when you watch little league and the two little kids in the gulf grave throwing kickin dirt on each other. That's what the full back in the back pocket. Doggies were do it on the weekend. Goalpost to try and keep themselves occupied but Release into it nor are think north. Melbourne should change good fraud. I have to cape it. And he's well look at every other club that's there in the nfl. I have a machi game. Every club has except for north nor have one thought i had fraud. I know it's and that got tight. I point for not nickeled tiger. An awesome does shaky history books. Jamie if you can read. It was just look like he was trying as some of his senate clearances. It was amazing. Sorry nick gets my number three on split this one with luke shuey hacking a bowl out from the center square kicking it our volley and flying ryan liam ryan mock in so easy to kick one of the five calls at west coast in about two minutes. I'll tell you. What one of the zoos on the on the podcast rod as listening law louis koreans absolute superstar. Now there was a guy who could take a hang. He was an episode. He could fly my friend. He could fly high the most people. He was an absolute stop but now is he moves like watching the weeds madre fun. He's got the nine has spooky written alive read. It was absolutely awesome to say so. That's great they get the three fights but unfortunately every single week somebody has to has to get dragged. Somebody has to get dragged and led to get into that in a moment at the moment. because it's as simple as this when it comes to off availing with on or audio. I'm going to start off or not. Apple Loses A Copyright Lawsuit

"Federal judge has dismissed. Apple's claims that mobile device virtualization company corral corallium violated copyright law with its software that allowed folks to run ios on pc's quoting the washington post in a ruling that has wide reaching implications for iphone security research and copyright law a federal judge in florida throughout apple's claims that carelli had violated copyright law with its software which helps security researchers find bugs and security holes on apple's products. Corallium co founded in two thousand seventeen by husband and wife. Amanda gordon and chris wade was a breakthrough insecurity research because it gave its customers the ability to run virtual iphones on desktop computers. Corallium makes it to use physical avon's that contain specialized software to poke and prod. Ios apple's mobile operating system. The judge in the case ruled that carell liam's creation of virtual. Iphones was not a copyright violation in part because it was designed to help improve the security for all iphone users. Corallium wasn't creating a competing product for consumers rather it was a research tool for a comparatively small number of customers. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment in the lawsuit. Apple argued that crawley products could be dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands because security flaws discovered by liam could be used to hack iphones. Apple also argued that chromium sells its product indiscriminately claim corallium denied dread. Rodney smith called apple's argument on those claims quote puzzling. If not disingenuous quote smith found that chromium used a vetting process before selling its products to customers. Apple initially attempted to acquire corallium in two thousand eighteen. According to court records when the acquisition talks stalled apple sued corallium last year claiming its virtual iphones which contain only the bare bones functions necessary for security research constitute violation of copyright law apple also alleged corallium circumvented. Apple's security measures to create the software thereby violating the digital millennium copyright act that claim has not been thrown out and quote. So i was already to say this was a dumb lawsuit but apparently companies have won a similar cases in the past around copyright but most in the digital security community praised this result. Let me quote at pony. All the things on twitter quote. This is a big deal for security research in particular but also other parts of tech apple case was an insanely broad assertion. That emulating iowa's firmware on something. That's not apple's own hardware violates copyright rather than covered by fair use. Imagine if. That argument had prevailed that emulation of a binary even for wildly different purposes such as security testing that binary is a digital copyright infringement. Might as well have back named afl to automatic federal lawsuit in that scenario was such a dangerously broad claim if the logical conclusion of your lawsuit is windows being a terms of service. Change away from overnight bankrupting vm. Ware to force everyone to use your and turning security testing of compiled binary into lawsuits. Then sorry you're lawsuit is bad and you should feel bad and quote

Can There Be Too Much Automation?

"One of the interesting things. I find from going from the crew to the single pilot model even though technically the afl destructions is weird crew concept right like so technically there are two of you right. But the goal of the instructor particularly. When you've got your evaluator had on is to not really be there right. So the you're supposed to evaluating the person operating on their own And i think the information overload issue which we're gonna get into this is You know it was a was a common problem in automation. I got to the airlines to And then progressively as we learned how to manage systems and to do that as a crew. You know. I think a lot of those issues when even though we still have plenty of of automation surprise and things like that In that in that world. I think though. I don't know that we've really. We've learned that lesson as well from the airlines is. Maybe we have some others about how to To to manage workload when there's all that information there so i was thrilled about this topic. This is what. I'm really passionate about now. Entering crew's flight it is true that we had a very interesting shift to the complexities and also all the information overload. We're going to talk a little bit about that. Not just in the in the modern cockpit. I personally feel especially when i jumped in the in. The airbus is the fact. That i thought was simpler. I mean i think having flown older airliners have all these knobs which is at cetera. I find sometimes it's a. It's a little easier because the computer does a lot for you. But there's there's a lot to it. There's more behind the scenes than we realize little more nuanced in these modern cockpits. What are we talking about. Technically advanced aircraft in autopilot. Some of these even have. I know my friends got a one seventy. Gps has a touchscreen on there. That actually is is amazing. All these different things like engine information systems. We have attached to that. That's not even part of the airplane. We have ipads saw a friend of mine putting together his j three cub and this incredible panel with a slot just for the ipad. And you're right i mean. How do we manage that system. How do we manage. Understanding of a is and how that can fail attitude and heading reference systems. Ads be in and out. I mean it really can be. It can be confusing. I i will say one thing. I love the redundancy. But i think there's also a this whole topic of conversation. Where is it redundant or confusion or can be run. Done it without the confusion. And that's a big part of actually managing the cockpit. And we talk a lot about that. And i think eric you do in the program there And i'm sure that's a big part of the program is Pilot resource management. When do they ensured curious. When do they use that to the folks at At the college level. So before you ever get to the airplane That i think we've learned from airline training And military training to to that extent but silicon our instrument training course The entirety of stage one the first fourteen lessons are all in the simulator So they don't actually actually the first stage check is in the simulator. You don't get to the airplane until less than sixteen and which is basically halfway through the instrument curriculum We think it's important that you learn how biology learn the automation management in an environment. Where there is a pause button where we can say look. You're here's where you're at do you know. Do you know what's gone no. I'm completely behind the airplane and we can reset and it's It's much more effective in terms of time and money for the student But quite frankly it's much better way to learn because you're not also in an airplane hurtling through the sky And to some extent. I think it's important when we're talking advanced automation Yeah there's a component of that that's ground it's It's you know study and prep then at simulation and then we apply in the airplane. So you don't have a typical like we get in the airbus all the time you know what's it doing now. You try to prevent that as much as possible. Well obviously i mean nobody. Nobody likes automation. surprise I think if the if the airplane could talk it would tell you it doesn't like it either But again the airplane is very faithful companion and it will go wherever you tell it to go if you if you're busy messing with a knob Not to not to go back too far in history. But if you look at eastern 401 if you're chasing a light bulb you know you might actually inadvertently airplane into the ground Or into another airplane or whatever the case may be and so it's it's about managing that workload And like just everybody's got a story like this. But when i was a teacher to cabin atlanta's super-busy class as airport Insanely busy airport at a guy. Taxation in a brand new one eighty two with the g. one thousand cockpit new so proud of it. We're gonna fly review. He gets to the. We're taxing on He's programming in altitude a heading Setting up the flight director. This guy's really like he's thinking ahead. He's proactive where at the whole short line gets clearance to take off and he goes watch this which is usually especially where i come from an alabama. That's for something really stupid is about to happen. But anyway so he taxes out. Onto the runway centers the airplane with the centerline pushes the autopilot own button. and advances. the throttled the full. And i'm like there's no way this is happening And sure enough He jus- kicked a little bit of rudder pedal to keep on the centerline. They are playing rotated he added in flight. Level change mode so it flew at v. y. which would had it set for Took off maintained runway heading and started to climb in the whole time. He's got his arms crossed with this huge smile on his face looking at me just so proud of himself. And i'm like an you know at some point and sean. Tom were hearing this right now. Going eight at you did stuck them. I mean i was just so shocked. I just i can't. This guy is taking off on autopilot in one eighty. Two this is happening is happening. But it even for me. It took me a second to realize what was going on. And so in the debrief he was like my automation. It's amazing i'm like the automation is not a substitute for you. I mean we might get to that point. There's a lot of You know speculation about how soon we'll get to that point but we're not the air yet you're still you fly the airplane and you also manage the airplane You know i don't. I don't know how how you learned it coral but my first real indoctrination automation was. That was that mentality. The automation does not fly the airplane. It's not a co-pilot. The automation is automation year. Flying the airplane and you're managing the automation Even if you're on autopilot you are still flying the airplane

Poverty Levels In Minority Communities On The Rise

"This week applications for unemployment benefits jumped unexpectedly to their highest since August this new economic report by Columbia. University. Finds that millions more Americans are falling into poverty with the expiration of benefits from the cares act. It also says black people and Latinos are more than twice as likely as white people to be poor in this country people like, Jasmine, a twenty, two year old black woman here in Washington. DC, we aren't using Jasmine's full name because of the social stigma associated with poverty. She tried to get pandemic unemployment assistance back in the spring when everything shut down and she couldn't start a new job at national stadium I was receiving. Five hundred dollars a week. It was rarely enough, but it helped me out and. That stop. believe in June. And ever since then I've been going through a lot of financial burden jasmine is a single mom she's home with her four young kids including a three month old making it impossible to look other work she's already burned through the four thousand dollars she managed to save up while receiving assistance like I've spent all. From my pool and being accused me like orange and where I think ED's. and. It hasn't gotten that far with Congress unable to agree on a new round of Corona virus assistance people like Jasmine are slowly dropping further into poverty every day we're going to dig into the causes of this with William. Spriggs. He's the chief economist for the AFL CIO and also a professor of economics at Howard University in Washington. Thanks for being here this morning. Thanks for having me. What's GonNa Happen to people like Jasmine if Congress can't agree on more federal aid. For the moment, some people depending on where they live or benefiting from the halting of evictions that means they're building up arrears and their rent many of them because they don't have a flow of income are also building up whereas when utilities or they're borrowing from Peter to pay Paul and they're building up careers there as well. The problem for others is they are in places where he fictions are taking place. there. quaint to need extra deposit in order to get the next rent, their credit score will have suffered. In some cases, people are sophisticated enough to use the forbearance that's out there for credit cards. Many people don't know about this, and some of them are getting penalties for missing credit card payments. Cycle that keeps feeding and pushing people further into this place. Exactly. It spirals out of control in the problem is, as you mentioned on unemployment insurance claims while we did see the rebound that everyone expected. That we found has slowed and the last three months we've seen progressively lower job creation a build up of people who are now permanently unemployed as opposed to people reporting that they're temporarily unemployed and for African Americans the labor market is now turn back to its discriminating itself and I was Gonna ask about that I mean. This is hitting a blacks in America and Latinos harder than whites. This is a big question and a lot of it is structural but can you give a concise answers to why? Well there's clear discrimination labor market. So the unemployment rate last month for high school dropouts. was lower than the block an appointment. That's the depth of the discrimination that black workers space that their unemployment rate is higher than the unemployment rate of high school dropouts of this nation. LemMe ask when it comes to children child poverty. Is that a recent study by the University of Chicago, Notre Dame found that black people and kids have been hit so hard if we can't turn things around what is life like for those chiltern. The real tragedy we know that spells of poverty permanently scarred show because they fall behind on so many dimensions and that's why it's necessary that we stop this economic pain. As soon as possible it's a long term S- growing for our economy, not just the scoring we're having immediately, which is very deep to our labour-market. William Springs is the chief economist for the AFL CIO. He's also a professor of economics at Howard. University. We so appreciate you taking the time this morning. Thank you. Thank you.

It's that monstrous five syllable word globalization, the philosophy and the practice of free trade which has been great for companies and for shareholders but has had a devastating impact. It is argued on the American working woman and. Man Well Economist do agree that in the past four decades the American working class, which we're defining tonight as people who lack a four year college degree. They have seen flat wages and a steady disappearance of good jobs. But is globalization a main reason that that's happening to those workers and for those workers is globalization entirely bad. Well, we think this has the makings of a debate. So let's have it. Yes or no to this statement globalization. has undermined. America's working. Class I'm John Donavan, and I stand between two teams of experts in this topic who argue for and against this resolution globalization has undermined America's working class as always. Our debate will go in three rounds and then our live audience here at the Saint Regis Hotel and Aspen Colorado where we are appearing in partnership with the Aspen Ideas Festival will choose the winner and as always if all goes well civil discourse, we'll. Also win a resolution once again, globalization has undermined America's Working Class Jared Bernstein you have debated with us before. So welcome back you're a senior fellow at the center on Budget and policy priorities. You were Vice President Joe. Biden's chief economist. The last time you debated with US interestingly Jason Furman who is your opponent at the other table tonight was your debate partner as a team you were formidable formidable I, almost want to use the French pronunciation. Formula, so are you planning to use your insiders knowledge of Jason's debate battles against him to very much am the way to do that with Jason is to make a lot of sports analogies because they repealing confusing. All right. Thank you and I see you detail to Aspen. You were a to aspen well I. Think the guy with the tie is the guy you want to listen to, but I'll let you decide. All right. Thanks very much. Jared Bernstein and can tell us who your partner is. This someone I've known for twenty five years she's a dear friend of mine and I consider her my mentor in this topic feely gentlemen feeling. Theo welcome to intelligence squared your president of the Economic Policy Institute. You've spent two decades as an economist for the AFL CIO, which is America's largest federation of unions. It represents some twelve point, five, million working women and men. You've spent twenty five years working on trade policy. So what got you interested in trade? Well, when I came to Washington in the early nineties I got drawn. INTO THE NAFTA debate the North American Free Trade. Agreement. And I realized pretty early on that. This was not some kind of a dry text book discussion about tariffs but it was a transnational battle over democracy good jobs, workers, rights, and regulation. So I was hooked because a lots at stake a lot is at stake. Okay. Thanks very much thelia once again, team arguing for the motion. And motion again, globalization has undermined America's working class. We have to debaters arguing against it, I Jason Firm. Welcome back to intelligence squared Jason you're a professor of the practice of economic policy at the Harvard Kennedy School you're a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, you were Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers under President Obama tonight. As we said, you're going to be debating your former colleague Jared Bernstein on the impact of globalization. So is this the first time you to have debated the globalization issue with each other jared and I agree on I'd say about ninety five percent of economic issues and my goal tonight is to bring to one hundred percent. Thanks very much Jason and can you tell us who your partner is someone I've only known for a few years and every single thing. He's ever told me I have believed James Manica Legitimate James Manyika. Welcome the first time telling squared you're a senior partner at McKinsey, and company you're the chairman of their economics research arm, the McKinsey Global Institute, your first time debating with us. But not your first debate you debated at Oxford I did you studied robotics and computers earlier in your career you were visiting scientist at NASA. So how do you go from very eclectic from robotics and space to thinking about trade policy? In American. Workers I've always been fascinated by the kinds of technologies that drive innovation and growth, but also affects what will people in the real world actually do. So when you put that together with the economy, these issues around trade and workforce become very, very important. Those are the issues that motive a great perspective to bring here and then once again, thank you. Thank you again to the team arguing against them.

Police unions dig in as calls for reform grow

"States across the US are in their second straight week of protests over the killing of George Floyd by a police officer many hope to see police reform they have reached a current though and that's often the police unions to talk about the role of police unions and the power they hold over reforms we have Booker Hodges assistant commissioner at the Minnesota department of public safety and let's bring it round the lord a police union labor negotiator former police officer and the former president of a state wide police union in Texas run thank you so much for joining us well thanks for having me we're getting a lot of comments from the moment given example one listener tweets it seems all other unions are under attack but police unions only gets stronger what accounts for this and then Richard tweets the left is finally realizing public unions make it very difficult to remove crappy employees teacher police if you suck at your job you've got to find another job these these questions Rauner kind of centered around what makes police unions different I think and could you answer that for us to can we look back to the history of police used to get the answer well sure and I think the I always call it kind of the duck billed platypus of unions they're in a union but they don't look like other unions and there's a big reason for that because of the nineteen nineteen Boston police strike it pretty much wiped out unionization in America until really into the nineteen sixties they do said paternal so ninety eighty five ninety percent of all the police United States do not belong to the AFL-CIO they have one chartered union and it's a it's a small percentage so the police were late getting into the labor firefighters had an international in nineteen eighty S. all the public employee unions construction units you know that some of those are a hundred years old so police were late to the game they were used in many times as strike breakers and picket lines and so they didn't gravitate in there tend to be conservative by nature so their unions look different but they're still just working people their blue collar working people who form the groups who have become adept at using the American political system to increase our wages and pay in for job security so I'm not ashamed to be in a policeman or representing the police they can only do in a increase their strength or get their message out it's all illegitimate nature so different than people that are anti gun and pro gun you know free speech no free speech in America everyone has a right to speak out on things so well of concern to their members we got this tweet Booker from Tracey Wheeler and she mentions what Ron just said about the fraternal order of police Tracy says the police union's name the fraternal order of police is symbolic of the fact that it operates like an old boys club officers who speak up about bad cop behavior are ostracized in this culture and I want to put this book or in the context of what we heard earlier from you lie at the the Marshall project who was saying that often times African American cops don't want to join leadership because they don't want to be part of that culture yes so yeah I think there's there are some differences between African American officers on what offices regarding union membership I mean mia love the vast majority of my career I was in the union I was a union president you know so I didn't have some of those issues but a lot of the other people I know who are in other organizations did have issues regarding how that they didn't feel that the union represented them or didn't defend them as strongly as they did white officer so I I I'm fully aware that that issue does exist within the labor unions run it sounds like you wanted to respond to that as well well that issue exist in America so you could say I'm a seventy two year old white man who grew up in the south where our view the world may be different than a black person my age who grew up different but men and women officers have different views about things Hispanic officers have different views are Asian awesome so that's in it in and of itself but you have to say policing in America is eighty five percent means there's been no woman firefighter president that I'm aware of any part of union in America ever so so we look at it and then we say yes but they appear to be older white men yes but there haven't democratic elections welcome back officers in America only about twelve percent of the police no less maybe nineteen so that's wrong but the pollution is not hurting anybody the city hires the city provides room recruitment in six cities were even worse off when it comes to female officers their lesson about twelve percent of the police which is half the number of Canada Australia and other European countries so thank you in that profession is eighty five percent median and whatever sixty seventy percent white means that white men tend to gravitate up yes but lots of officers don't become involved in the

Historically Black Colleges' Contributions to the NFL with Dr. Derrick E. White

"On this week's program historically black colleges and universities and the NFL with Doctor Derrick white in black America in their celebration of the hundred year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the for better for worse college football who celebrate the One hundred fiftieth year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries. That kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of talking about the early game when the Ivy Leagues Dominated College Football. Right you get that kind of Astaldi. Nfl is not so much right. In their part of Wigan's law says that the integration the reintegration of the. Nfl in part is done. Because you know teams WanNa move to the West Coast Right. They WanNa play in Los Angeles And that the black community the La said no in particular forced the L. A. Don's to say if you WANNA come in you. GotTa you gotTa desegregate Your Team. So woody strode gets an opportunity to play and Kenny Washington gets a chance to try out for these teams and they make these teams in the NFL so we were talking about the kind of reintegration of of professional football as the National Football League celebrated. Its first one hundred seasons unbeknownst to many sports fans the NFL didn't have any African American players for decade from Nineteen thirty four to nineteen forty-six. There was an unspoken agreement between owners to ban African American players today. They are two African American general managers for minority head coaches and one chief operating officer for the first time the crew for sue both fifty four had a record number of minority officials of the seven on the field five for African Americans the contribution of historical black colleges and universities. Acc use to the NFL has changed the game forever undrafted by an NFL team. Paul tank younger was the first African American player from grambling State University to play in the NFL when he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in nineteen forty nine the first African American drafted in the NFL draft was jaws rooks. I running back out of Morgan state in the Eleventh Round. One hundred and twenty fifth overall by the Green Bay packers in nineteen fifty one doing super bowl fifty four week in south Florida Group of area high school athletes had an opportunity to learn about the rich history of black college football and his contributions to the NFL and Black America spoke with doctor. Derrick wide associate professor at the University of Kentucky. When I was teaching a class on sports history I found that the students knew nothing about historically black college role. They were as part of their assignment. They had researched The histories of sports history at various institutions and students had cookman in Florida. And I knew that those are really successful. Athletic programs and students came back with nothing. And so I've you know I just thought chalked up. Initially students being students that they just didn't do enough but when we both begin system. I realized there was a huge gap in the scholarship. And there's a Lotta work on sports. History is a lot of work on college sports especially college football but there was very little nearly nothing on historically black colleges And so at the time I was at Florida Atlantic in so I was like Bam. You is like right up the road. Well you know eight hours away from my house but I and I knew Jay. Gator was dominant. I'd heard these stories from my uncles and I knew he was a fantastic program so I did a research trip and I went up there and they have the archivists there. And the the library's at up in Florida were amazing and they gave me these materials in there. All these letters documents and so I had budgets and letters of professional teams and I begin to understand how he organized his football program because the issue is discussed our Pamela Day. That there wasn't a lot of research money. A lot of research recruiting money not money budgets. Within Coach Gate. There was the ad coach basketball at one point. And those things. I thought those kinds of stories and that the greatness that the success that he was able to produce was Willie Gallimore Kim. Rowley Bob Hayes. I wanted to understand how that was done. I didn't WANNA chalk it up to that. These were just natural athletes that there was something being done happening on these institutions in some coaches Were better than others and so I wanted to tell that story talk about. Integration Immigration had a positive effect but it also had a devastating effect on also African Americans going to the NFL right so an integration was boom for professional football. Right then you know one of the reasons that Jake was so able to be so successful especially early on in the forties and early fifties that many of his former players gather degrees and became teachers in the high schools. All across the State of Florida and North Georgia. And so he would. They would just send him letters. Like hey coach gay. Got This really. Good kid this Willie Gallimore guys pretty good right. Like this is how he got recruiting information was from his former players but those players were talented but there was no professional football opportunities and so when those opportunities really begin to open up a specially after nineteen sixty when the AFL comes in then professional football now creates a new opportunity for black colleges in small colleges in general and so that becomes this boom and on the backside that the course the civil rights movement is happening at this exact same time right so brown. V Board of Education. This is entire push to desegregate schools Whether the high school level colleges etc and so so many ways why colleges Kinda caught between their own. Their success right. They're producing these great players in the NFL. Minium all pros as we talked about earlier. Thirty two or in the NFL Hall of fame at the same time. There are new opportunities at Florida. Miami or Georgia and that these schools especially in the deep south are slowly trying to recruit them when you look back at the history of ACC using his contribution to to the NFL. I found it amazing and the one hundred year the League. There's very little that has been articulated about a SPEC- US or the early African American players and they and their celebration of the hundredth year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the you know for better for Worse College Football who celebrated his Hundred Fiftieth Year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries that kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of documentaries talking about the early game when the Ivy League dominated college football.
