"You know I was trying to get to a fort joke here and. We all know we all know that this kind of ship or Worked out for them. Okay. So now confused because South Carolina. Doesn't have the basketball gravitas. They don't to my knowledge they're not putting love there. Don't have the basketball. No. Yeah I. Yes. I agree that the movie the women's basketball is very good but I assume this to be maybe I am falsely correlating ACC coastal this with unbearable. White Dude banker who only cares about men's basketball? Or in South Carolina's case why due to the banker. I think again, this is a this is an ACC thing not. LESS THAN CAROLINA BANKS I thought they were to the system and what what would will Muss Champ do at a ski slope. Fighter. No he would imagine must trying to stand up on skis come out yet he. Imagine that squaring up Liam. Neeson. In that movie with the wolves with. UNCLES, but it's against. But it's against the ski lift its against a ski lift right? Like it's heading toward him and he's like come out. I. Saw this haunted bench is trying to attack me. I got this. He's just sitting there knocking them off one by one. If. If you're with this bench, I find you to spit kicks kick. That would be. COVID. Coach. Before the mountain life. Plastic. They make me more intense. So we'll tell you the case for this is almost entirely. By the numbers who do we have at number one? Number One. This will not be disputed whatsoever when I say this, you will say. That's definitely right. The number one most ACC coastal program of all time the NC state will yep Yup Yep. Yep. There's no way. Okay. No No, I mean even my. The metrics amazing share. So, the is. In backwards order distance from a perfect five hundred in ACC football games, mortar state, and Notre. Dame they have been good against ACC opponents, South Carolina in NC state. There within just a few games of five hundred, all time in ACC. Games NC state gets the nod there. Of course, because they are on the wrong side of hundred. So, this is how you end up with wake forest with an all time point three, one win percentage in ACC games. They're up there with glimpse and Virginia Tech because it's not about whether you're good or bad. It's about how close you are to re perfect five, hundred balancing all things closest to the pin bound all things. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah No that now that now that you say NC state south, Carolina makes more sense to me because NC state and South Carolina playing each other feels very ACC coastal. Not just in terms of like the matchup but in like Yup I know this is going to be seventeen thirteen and it doesn't matter who who has which number. Also. Lot in football sixty years. Yeah. So That's that's pretty ACC coastal. Goes with the gentlemanly pace of life in the ACC. Coastal things just move a little slower when you're a gentleman, where's the championship? It's assumed and it'll be on the way. I like that you're setting up a counterbalance where in the SEC, it just means more in the ACC coastal it's but what if it didn't? ACC coastal. It just means. It just same background mindset is what it is. That's the coastal mindset it is what you gotTa make you gotTa make. Money here it's just mean. The. Sec Sec's just over there. Buying flashy cars. Meanwhile, we understand the value of things I. I go to a cottage in the summer that does not have air conditioning. The Verb, with these people. Now I summer and highlands. I think this is this is a good ranking. It's indisputable. Thank you. Okay. We done somewhere in there I think that's the end of the show. Yeah. Oh, wait where are we supposed to be recording?.

"So I haven't seen the how you formulated. This is some of this is part of why Dukes here because they they think of themselves as different and to really be a sea coastal you must acknowledge that all is same and these distinctions are just like laundry and labels. I, think you're pretty close to it, right? Okay Yeah. Yeah my numbers were off. That's fine. I'm the numbers expert. We are now entering the top ten most ACC coastal programs next up, we have the reigning Champ of the ACC coastal Virginia. I. Actually would have thought. They'd be much higher on this list. So because because. Everything you're saying feels like aggressively coastal. So I'm curious how they're not at least top five. Well. I think one of the reasons that they have consistently been too good at football. We've all said about Virginia over the past five plus years say. I have a theory here it is that they are two ACC coastal. You're trying too hard right In the ACC coastal if you're if you know, Virginia is walking around with a shirt that says I am the most ACC coastal program no you are trying way to hard pal difference between being rich and acting rich. Yes. Okay. Yeah Yeah I think that's I. think that's fair. They're also have unfortunately some very coordinated. Cheers which definitely like Definitely. Runs counter to the coastal ethos of a waiting room until basketball starts. Yeah we don't really like all that organization here. Next up number nine. The Miami. Hurricanes. Who? They were put in the ACC coastal. To keep them in Miami in Florida state from always winning the same division. General has demonstrated extremists sixty coastal nece by not abiding with that anyway. Came into the ACC. Coastal a stranger and and now family. Can't wait break off for a second is there a point at which any can anybody name a situation where any of these division clogging fears have actually come to pass? where it's been like a good thing that they split them or no remember when I was just thinking about remember when the sec divisions came up and it was like water to see in, Alabama had to play twice a year Tennessee's like not a problem. Wasn't. This also thing with Nebraska perse when they put them in the big ten whether like that that's what I'm saying. Can we think of? These division fears have actually come to pass. Where where else would they have Nebraska? And yes. Yeah I think I, think the thought process was at the time they were not in Ohio states. They were not in Ohio state side and they were like, well, we can't put them there because the tube you know whatever State. Has Eight Michigan was the reason for leaders legends wasn't? It weren't they in different note. I do. which but like. You're saying, right. I think I don't remember but I think one of the considerations for where they put Nebraska in the same way like obviously there's not like direct rivalry that they had to sort of like keep split but it was like we must maintain balance it feels like whenever you try to maintain balance in your divisions you just fuck it up because I was saying is Whenever, there's been this hollering about. These these two division foes, it's going to be unfair to one of them like Florida state and Clemson definitely can't think of a time when one of them. Screwed up another one's Caesar look football was both a long time ago and a long time in the future. I'm saying the underlies. It doesn't. It doesn't it doesn't happen. Conferences are stupid. And divisions are just stupid or conferences. Yeah. Yeah. Are Incredibly stupid because you're basically spaces shit on geography ACC the ACC has always been the worst offender here just base shit on geography and keep it based on geology Oh you got. In Your How many? Do you have this would be like. The Virginia Tech Old Earth. Division, right. Yeah, and then like Miami as the earth that is about to be reclaimed by the earth the Gigli. Earth. Division. Schools we would just have a geology four, zero four. Yeah. That would also require conference officials and people who run college football to know anything about geology which led that's a quiz. I'd like to hand out school mines baby. Number eight ACC coastal Georgia Tech. Okay. Yeah. which you know in order to justify this outside of the math I was like well, they do have a Pro Golfer Matt Kuchar and he's also a terrible tipper definitely, seriously ACC coastal. But the ACC coastal is super generous. You Go ahead you win the division. We gave to an official like, but that's I'm talking, Jason. You're talking about internal generosity like. That mets. Generosity for caddies. Use My beach house no problem. But shipping that's like. Playing G. Five school I'm sorry Sir. The ACC coastal. I'm sorry Sir I don't sign social contracts like dipping I signed a contract because I do business. Number seven. Most ACC coastal coastal university is the greatest university in the world. Panthers Yeah which I will say this. They have a lot of things that aren't super ACC coastal the numbers back this up but like pits the. Gritty private school. This. Is that true private school? I think they are now as of late. Very, very recently like today. of today would just made them one. Are they owned by the Pittsburgh steelers? IS THAT THE ARRANGEMENTS MR? That would be there. They're technically state related. Related what nonsense from? Hasn't been a haven't been a private school since like. The sixties? Yes state related as technically the term. So yes, we can go ahead. Shit. So Spencer is drawing up were a private. It was true. But yeah. Dying pit. Do you know the name of the founder of George Pitt Hugh Henry. Breckenridge. Breckenridge. edged. Saturn the. Henry Henry route. Western Pennsylvania I feel like it's a weird place to put a coastal school. That's explanation alone right. It is a great place however to put a home field apparel ad. Let's go. Long. Count it. I. Don't know where do you WanNa? Get your comfortable college apparel from. I got nowhere else homefield the only do myself. Rather, than sisters, we are Gand Ganda was the plural of Gandalf dowse again, Dow Gandalf's yells brothers and sisters. ACC unveils schedule, may push championship game back a week
"We now have the the the big ten schedule. That was a big deal. We're expecting the SEC any day now and see. What there is will look like, but again, the SEC season is not slated to begin until September twenty six, the big ten is scheduled to begin September third, and there are a number of games on tap. For Aug, twenty twenty-nine, remember last season. The first game of the season was August twenty fourth between Miami and Florida and we are what are We March? March August Fifth the ACC starts a week of the seventh. The big twelve is not told us yet, but several games are on the first on on the first Saturday. "I don't think we're. GonNa, get a playoff I. think we're going to have champions conference shaming themselves champions think maybe we'll have conference champions and we'll have arguments and that's fine because. We've talked about this before, and this was the point I I like to make about the playoff that this year especially cultural balls a TV show. You're looking at it through a lens of how do you compare teams when deciding who gets to go to the rose? Bowl. WHO GETS NEAR SIX GAME? Who Gets the College Football playoff berth. This is a TV show. This year college football is existing merely to exist this fall. It is European soccer without the Champions League, right. Exactly. We can come up with we can you know everybody's going to be seeming all sorts of playoffs at the end of the year, if we don't have an actual postseason, which is fine because I while I, don't love discussion for the sake of discussion, I'd rather see things settled on the field in some fashion. I don't think that's the point of the season I. Don't think if if we're pushing back to September twenty sixth, if we're saying conference only schedule. Teams going from eight conference games in some conferences to ten nine to ten, whatever. The competitive reasons for the twenty twenty season exist less. The just putting pen to paper existing exists a whole lot more. So I don't I don't shed too many tears for Bill C and Jerry Palm, who I both I love both of them dearly. But I think the point is just simply they're just it's sort of corralled exhibitions at this point, which is fine because I'm going to watch all of them enthusiastically and hope that everybody's happy and healthy. Who are your winners and losers here? I, think I think big winner has to be a C. Network. Yeah. I haven't seen the TV schedule, but in terms of ratings yeah. They're going to do everybody's going to be at home pretty much. You know we'll have some stadiums with limited capacity, but yet TV is a huge winner here. TV's a huge winner because of that quirk. Plus Yeah, you know any station that can carry a game I think is a winner, I think. You know I don't have to tell you. I don't have to tell the people that listen to this show, most of whom have been cooped up for many months. Now, that sports on TV is is a big deal. It's it. We're not getting back to normal maybe anytime soon, but it will at least give us that sense of normalcy to see some of the sports that we love on TV. Again, caveat if they can pull it off, and if health allows for it, every local mattress company advertising games, big winner, huge winner. Yeah. In terms of winners and losers I'll stay with notre, dame for just one second. Okay I. Think this is a win for them. I think it was a way for them to lock up at least ten games. I think Jack. Swab. Rick had to make the move I. Think he did the right thing. I don't think there will be much of a much of a negative much of a drawback for them, I? mean. They're doing it with their other sports. Already Notre Dame's an ACC team ton of sense. Yeah. What's the basketball coaches name big slick tear? Mike Bray, he's been doing it forever. He's been doing it forever. So they like, I, told you earlier, they got the friends referral code here to get in for one year only to the ACC. Now, fifteen super conference will we'll see where it goes. So are you good with? Do you want it to be long term as a Notre Dame person? I have always wanted them to join a conference. Okay. You've been skeptical of them actually making that decision, but you've been pro it big Danny see big twelve been pro big ten for a long time. Okay and I would be pro ACC. If it was a move, they decided to make what's interesting about this. Though tie is whenever it is. We push forward to a new normal because raccoon comeback, we're never going back life moves forward. There's going to be some sort of new normal. Once things are hopefully better. What's interesting is there seems to have been conversations about what are conferences really doing for these major major programs beyond limiting their television earning potential. So there you know if if it's USC Oregon, if it's Texas or Oklahoma, if it's you know, Miami, Florida State, whatever in the ACC, lot of these programs could probably earn more money at this point signing TV deals. Allah Notre, Dame, signing a deal with ESPN. Obviously, we have conference networks already, but as the NC Double A. and. And these conferences aren't needed as much as they used to be their bowl tie ins, their TV deals. It's interesting that we're having this conversation about notre, Dame, going a conference route when we could be seeing more notre, Dame's as TV, deals expire and places are saying, well, I mean, we could. We could do this all a card and make some more cash. Just saying the Alabama football just signed a deal with CBS, they're gonNA make a hundred million dollars a year. It's wild. It's while to think about the next five to seven years. However long it's GonNa take for For everything to return or to progress to that new normal. I. Think Notre Dame. I think conference networks. I. Think any TV network that can carry football's a big winner. He says, there will be quirks here. There will be some `asymmetry to win season started when they finish and who's playing who's not playing, I think. I think from a Fan's perspective, it will stay interesting much much deeper into the season than we are accustomed to. Not, a sponsor, but I'm I've been very happy with my Roku. So if you are suddenly needed some sort of Ott device to watch more of your team's games, because everything is conference, only all of the sudden. I've been happy with the ROKU. To stream playstation or. Coo Yeah, rocus crate. Yeah. Okay. Send some stuff Roco. How about that? The big loser here? It may only be one. It's gotta be Syracuse in their way scheduled, right? Funny have. You seen this thing? Yeah I don't know. I haven't seen dates on this, yet I don't think they've. They've given us that yet. But In. This new format Syracuse has, Away Games Against Clemson Louisville north. Carolina noted Damon Pit. Stops sledding. That's pretty tough. Right there. Home Games are fine. It's such a crazy home road split and I don't know if it's because they just value because the part of the thinking with the scheduling is we want to make this more regional. We want to cut down on travel time and expense whatever and do everything to sort of minimize whatever it is. That travels GONNA. Look like this fall. and. The fact is not only the Syracuse get all of their tough games basically on the road. They're. GonNa Louisville, they're going to North Carolina going down to Clemson. IS THEY'RE NOT I?.
ACC sets 11-game slate, includes Notre Dame
"Well, the A C C proven not to be a bunch of huckleberries because their board of directors got today got together on Wednesday. They're gonna have an 11 game football season beginning the weekend of September 12 and Notre Dame is going to be a part of that. Playing a full league schedule. But on Ly if public health guidance allows all a cc schools and Notre Dame will play 10 conference games, plus one not conference game of their choosing, And guess what. Fighting eyes will be held over the championship game, and there will not be any divisions for this season on Lee. Heather Dennis, ESPN Council football reporter When she was on SportsCenter. She told how this decision by the A C C will affect the other power five conferences. Well, let's start with the SEC and right before we got on the show here. I got a statement from Greg. Thank you, the SEC commissioner, he said. He's not about to speculate on anything that might be floating out there, he said. We continue our discussions focused on the return of fall sports, including football. We will announce any decisions at the appropriate time. That's a statement from SEC commissioner Greg Sang Ki. I can tell you that the SEC presidents have a regularly scheduled previously scheduled I should say video conference tomorrow. So everybody's watching that Big 12 Conference commissioner Bob Bowlsby told me that the Big 12 presidents are going to be meeting on Monday and they will be presented four or five different scheduling models, he said. We're going to arm them with all the information they need to make a decision if that's what they want. Two

"Next question is from Dan Klobuchar in Minneapolis. Spruce instill longtime fan of all the pods iterations in your college and your your career changes. I was reading my own I was going to say your college career changes which significant a mind regard. I I've a stupid question. This ought to be good. What exactly are your editor chief duties Stu I promise this did not come from one of your. Proteges at the athletic does everyone have to run their column feature ideas past you? If so how often do you turn them down? Also? Are there times when you give the green light on an article, but then have to kill it once you read the finished product I'm curious about what your role is in the final product of this website, this might be the best question I've ever seen on the. Audible. Why don't think the answer is GonNa be juicy as he hoping for their I don't I don't know that I've killed any articles. So I I'm more the. I, guess you would say the the the bigger picture, Guy I'm in constant contact with. So we have a great team of editors hands on editors who actually edit the stories. Now they are the people who you know I guess in this case in your in dance scenario like you know Dan. If if Bruce pitched a story Dan, Newsman Dan who's been hated it like that would be the role he's he's talking about how often do you? How often does he spike your stories? I don't know I don't know not very often not very often certainly not i. don't think you would have spiked anything you'd actually written it but you guys brainstorm ideas and some of them he may say, yeah, that's great. Let's go for it and some of them he might not. That's normal editor writer relationships but I'm more just in touch with Dan and the other editors. Most days also in touch with our our team at H. Q. on the business side as we are constantly strategizing in talking about how we're going to approach. For instance, right now, we're having a lot of discussions about how to preview college football season without knowing for sure that it's going to be played. Or you know when we were launching our state of the program series with the four-match for that should be or We did a big series last year on conference realignment that. I was pretty heavily involved in the planning of that which stories should do and that sort of thing. So kind of a the guy up in the flight tower I guess looking over at everything and then we've got people who are actually. In the weeds editing, the stories, coordinating their writers, what they're going to write about that day and so on and so forth. Do you consider yourself a mentor to the writers at the athletic? Young, I mean I. I would. I guess the question is, do they consider me to right I'm happy to be anybody's mentor that wants me to mentor them and I would say that. I do have that relationship with several of our writers but I'm sure there are other writers who would be Bilas stews never talked to me about any story I've written and I apologize if that's the case, but we do have thirty something college football writer. So I'm always available I'm always happy to time. We do have some. You know.

"Okay, let's go to the mail bag. As always you can send your emails to the audible pod at gmail.com and we start with Ethan via. He says playing the Ari Wasserman theory forward I assume he's referring to. Ari's What, whatever it is asked you with recruiting messy evaluation. Fish Fish Fillet. To two. The and one of those two. if I guess his theories, a messy evaluation year will lead to higher than average five and four star recruits missing at big schools because of lack of fit personnel, other factors that are missed from the absence of okay. He's saying that schools are gonNA. Miss on more five and four stars unusual. Time three star jams are not discovered by the big time programs which benefit. That are not in the top tier recruiting rankings, but develop rob talent. Who is primed to step up in this world mark Dantonio Michigan State would have been the also fit, but he has gone. Okay stew. I think that this is a really interesting point because I think he's right. There is less time for the evaluation also. You have a bunch of players and we don't know how many at this point but you have a bunch of players who may not have a senior season right before a signing day. So that only adds to it where. especially. Like Tcu when Gary Patterson really elevated that program was because a lot of times whether it was an Andy Dalton nerves a handful other guys they waited till late in their senior season or even after the season before they offered and so they had a clearer picture of what they were getting in. So I think not just you know look you can. You can do zooms and have people do video calls and different things but you. Didn't get to work them out in camp before their senior year. There's a lot less of clearer picture on what you're having, and honestly there's a lot less of a clearer picture for what the people who put them in the star system are going off because it's a little bit like a lot of times they will base their star rankings on WHO's offering a guy. So it just kind of a little bit of a a carryover from that. So I mean I think you know. We think we're right now we're so focused on this year. This coming season is it going to happen? How's it going to happen? But the recruiting component of covid is going to have a ripple effects for the next four or five years and. Did and also. That and I don't know it's been months since this came up but the the proposal for the one time transfer exemption that one time he can play that sitting out a year. I believe is going to get voted on January making it easier for players to transfer I mean you could see massive numbers of kids who just Through this haphazard agreeing your ended up at the wrong school and transfer I mean not already lots of gathered transferring. But if they know, they don't have to sit out a year like I just think we could see a lot of guys right after their freshman year transfer. You could also Suzy Stu because of what you referenced. A lot of kids not get scholarships spots because it wouldn't surprise me if schools maybe only signed twenty instead of twenty five or maybe even less than that depending on how much room they wanted to free up for transfers, not just graduate transfers. I mean, that's GonNa probably indicate I would my hunch is in this came up I, did a story about the challenges, the one time transfer exemption without any roster flexibility going towards it, and that story Kinda brought into it because I heard it from coaches. What happens when the next cycle comes up where you have to where you you know you're allowed twenty five initials maybe you don't sign that many kids on the front end especially as even before this thing was at crystallize. Now we're looking at a lot of kids who won't be probably planned for their senior year. So there's even less of a picture that you're kind of riding on what a mess everything just a mess right now. Do the next person from James Cunningham regarding the logic you employed when making the argument that group of five schools should pack it up and moved to the spring. So they can get exposure that's also referencing not just a group of five but also the FCC `schools you made the the no group of five team can make the CFP and that they are playing for one near six game. The same argument can be said for the vast majority of college football truly do you believe Kansas or wake forest or NC State Oregon State or vanderbilt or? Have a better shot at the CFP spot than APP. State. That the ratings for those teams are better than the Mac on Tuesday in truth there only about three, these three same three teams can win a national championship in a given year Alabama Clemson Ohio state. There are a group of ten to fifteen that can make a CFP Ron but given that the perfect season can win a national championship. So using your argument, that's eighteen teams can make the CFP should break away and leave the rest for the next year. Well he's right from a competitive standpoint certainly. I've said many times on here that the pool of teams that can realistically contend for a national championship is fairly small and you know there's a lot of power five teams out there that. Made Never, make college football playoffs early not when it's fourteen that being said. a noon ESPN. Big Ten game between purdue and Iowa is still going to do bigger TV numbers than. Pretty. Much. Any group of five match up. You can name played on a Saturday in your point was that. If if rather than having those games played in the fall and going up against. Said Perdue Iowa game. They should play in the spring when there's no other competition. Right also, the part and James mentioned about the Tuesday. That's part of the part of the deal is you won't have to play on a Tuesday or Wednesday night in. November just try to get some ratings even though a lot of your fans aren't GonNa want to show up because they have to work the next day. A lot of coaches would much prefer to get to play on a Saturday. So. I mean James's point I think is is. It's there's there's validity to it. By the same token though and again. I would use example when Bill Schneider as a Kansas State when they were rolling. On profile, you wouldn't think they would. They would be one of those ten to fifteen but they were I, mean, they could. They could have won a national title back. Then I mean, if you have the right coach and they built the program, well, they could compete for national they could certainly get to a playoff game. So I think again, I think just because people look at it and say, well, this team has all the five stars or whatever You know I I. My hunch is most people did not think when eddoes Ron signed his first class, they were going to win a national title. In that classes cycle. I'm guessing almost nobody thought it maybe outside of maybe a couple other people in his office. So I do think that that's again it's lsu people national titles there before but at this my point is You know. If. You have the right coaching of the right system around you that you are not precluded because Ohio state and Alabama and Clemson certainly have all of advantages right now because nobody nobody saw Dabo Sweeney coming either when he got going. So I think that's that's the point of it if if Dabo Sweeney was at NC state as opposed to Clemson. It'd be a much different. That NC state would be much different or them saying no like I mean if you have the right coach in the now granted, there's advantages with with. With with. With Clemson. But at the same point wasn't that Clemson was was thriving before he got there. I think most programs have a ceiling I. Don't think NC state ceiling is national championship but with the right coach Dabo or whoever else? You know there are models out there and you think about Oregon was completely relevant program in what was then the PAC ten up until the mid nineties Wisconsin was terrible in the big ten for decades until Barry Alvarez. Possible to transform a program where a power five program like that whereas group. Five. Until they can get that that better conference affiliation I just think you know what your best case scenario is what UCF is now I think or your best case centers private Boise State is now Boise state actually does decent TV numbers. I was just looking here at last year I looked it up. So on September seventh at noon Eastern. Syracuse played Maryland on ESPN neither of those teams anybody would have thought is going to go the off one point three, million viewers the next. That the night before Friday night Marshall Played Boise State on Espn two and got one point four, million viewers. So that's you know martial I mean Boise state is A..

ACC schedule includes Notre Dame, 10 conference games
"We're pleased to be joined. Now by our colleague NAP Fortuna nobody's more plugged in AC and also Notre Dame who is now at least for one football season a member of the ACC we were just talking a little bit offline map, but it's been kind of a whirlwind where this meeting of the president's for for Wednesday we knew about it for. A while and they were gonNA have poor. I. Was they're gonNa vote on one of few schedule models and then the day before it became no, they're not ready to vote. It's GonNa get pushed back a week and then all of a sudden band with almost no warning there was a full press release with the whole schedule model on everything. What happened. Like everything else when it comes to college football news amid pandemic I think everyone is learning things from anyone other than the primary source. So to speak I mean this was a rare case where a reported him break this story that the League was able to put this story out on its own terms and I think. Being that this was a president driven decision that probably shouldn't be too surprising because those guys are the ultimate. Shock collars when it comes to weather there will there won't be football. This fall but. Athletic Directors were not on that Board of Governors meeting call today they had. Kept them abreast of what they were talking about him models and so forth. But. As you said, I mean I was told as recently as yesterday. Tuesday that. The eighties were not ready to present a model that they were ready to go with just in light of the MARLINS fiasco with the. MLB. On Monday the evergreen situation going on there they still wanted to to to flesh things out and. figure out what the best approaches and I do think it's the irony of all ironies that as soon as the ACC puts out this press release, our friend Ross Stellar over sports illustrated has a report in the SEC is going to go conference only which. "acc" Discussed on The Audible with Feldman And Mandel
"Welcome to the audible presented by trader. Joe's I'm Stewart Mandel joined as by Bruce Feldman is actually a bit of an emergency episode of the audible. We weren't planning to record until Thursday morning and then Wednesday afternoon Pacific time suddenly after. Luke months of waiting for some sort of clarity about what these conferences are planning to do this season we got at least one and possibly two back to back, which is funny Bruce. Because I'm looking at my phone, it is currently to eleven PM Pacific. In, twelve fifty to less than an hour and a half ago. I texted you and said that we might need to get a guest for tomorrow because. Things remain cloudy as ever and we can't go forty five minutes on the status of the season and that's for sure. Now, we might just be able to do that Um with the ACC's news. We're going to bring on our colleague Matt Fortuna Who knows the ACC an in particular notre? Dame very well. I mean I don't know about you but the first thing that jumps out to me is. Wow. Notre Dame is going to play for a conference championship for the first time in its entire history. Yeah I think the other thing was that seems to be quite honestly concession that's the wrong word used but in terms of the money because obviously Notre Dame with its home games on the on NBC to share that with everybody else is pretty significant but obviously, we're in uncharted waters with all this stuff going on, right? Yeah. What choice do they have I? Guess is the question they were left with all with the Big Ten and PAC twelve going only and with no guarantee that the others won't do the same. They needed a fallback and or they weren't GonNa have much of a schedule and. Being a partial member of the ACC the. ACC. made it happen for them with some concessions in return? So For those who haven't seen the press release. The plan as of now, and with everything we have to say caveat, it's dependent on. The the language they used. If. Public Health Guidance allows. That's what they said if public health guidance allows. College football seat the ACC football season will begin the week of September seventh so that would be Only a week later then when they were going to open, it'll be everybody will play Conference Games plus one non conference game. The non conference game has to be against an opponent in your own state that follows the same medical guidelines as ACC teams. So ten conference, Games, Notre Dame will play a full ten conference game schedule themselves. They are eligible for the conference championship. And we don't have any dates, but we do have this this very flashy schedule graphic of all the helmets US, which ten teams, each each of them is going to play. So Leaving out for a second just the idea of is this actually going to be feasible. They actually gonNA play starting the week of timber seventh. Even though this has all been rumored for week. It's actually been no. It's actually been rumored since the PAC twelve big ten conference only stuff because if you remember Our friend Brett mcmurphy reported something about the ACC and I remember talking to sources within the League who had said, this was one of the plans that they had and notre. Dame would be a part of that and that was about a month ago. Now it's been several weeks this this exact. Has Been reported by numerous people as the one they were going to vote on. It just wasn't clear if it was to get voted on today but something about seeing the graphic and seeing the logos and seeing the dates just made it real like this. This is really happening this this you know I, I look forward to seeing similar ones from the pack twelve in the big ten. We should also note that added almost exactly the time they announced this Ross Dellinger from sports illustrated tweeted that the SEC may now be moving toward a conference only schedule. This is he used the word very fluid. So I. Don't want to go too far into it because who knows what will actually get decided but that that is least being discussed. Yeah. There are some thoughts that they sec coaches are expected to hear something on Friday from by Friday of their from their leadership. Also, the PAC twelve could be getting their schedule as well on Friday. So there's a lot of chatter about that in those circles. So a bunch of stuff going on is related to the ACC part of this eleven games to be played over at least thirteen weeks with each team having to open dates to manage it and also only one division So these are all encouraging things. One thing I would Andy Staples and I did a story at the beginning of this week about kind of what was. To lay out in the next two weeks or so and one of the things that came out of it from my conversations with a bunch of a dis and one of them had said because I said, you know you on one hand you have a lot of folks in the SCC and in the ACC and certainly in the PAC twelve who have. talked. About a a later schedule and some of those folks have actually talked about possibly being into in mid to late September start whereas you had the big twelve at with Oklahoma and Kansas already lining up games in that week zero window she had people going in would seem like a little bit different directions and one thing and Ada told me was. and this was just two days ago and he said you know I feel like people thought everybody was going to be on the same page and only thing I've seen is. everyone is seems to be going kind of out for their own best interest and it's really been a lot more individualized. Then people were trying to portray it as we've gotten further into this process. Oh. Yeah I never believed second that there would be any sort of unified resolution to all this. That's the never in the history of college football have these conferences worked together on much of anything except like they drafted legislation recently but you know they're always going. act in their own self interests in the perfect examples, which just happened where the C. just literally just announced the ten plus one plus one. They're doing that entirely to preserve, Georgia Georgia Tech Florida Florida State Louisville Kentucky and South Carolina Clemson and then I'm telling you like almost at the same time was Ross's report that the SEC may actually Cook Conference only. You would think they would coordinate that before one puts that out there but you know that would be. To organized that would be that'd be a professional sports thing to do not a college sports thing to do One other thing we should get into for we bring that on we have another thing that's been rumored for some time and we saw the first domino. If you will Caleb Barley projected first round pick Virginia Tech cornerback becomes the first not the first player in any of college football but the first high profile likely high draft pick who announced he is out of the twenty twenty season to start preparing. For the twenty twenty, one draft you talk to coaches about this recently that was when it was spring season possibility yet what's what's What's changed with this do one of the coaches I talked to was a personnel director had said had the feeling this would start happening once I saw all the NFL guys start opting out I'm sure it will. This will have a domino effect. Kayla of that should be noted he was a guy who was high up on our freaks list six to cornerback with blazing speed. You know twenty four MPH GPS numbers remarkable. He is coming off back surgery that he had. After last season..
ACC sets 11-game fall football schedule
"The ACC has made a lot of news today and eleven games schedule Ten conference one non conference over thirteen weeks the first game somewhere. After the first weekend of the season, and there will be one division of the big story out of this as Notre Dame. Andrea. Adelson covers the. ACC College football for ESPN, and we are delighted to welcome Andrea to the program. Andrew thanks. We knew this day was coming. We didn't think Notre Dame was going to be left at home. But your reaction to everything we have we have found out here in the last hour. Notre Dame being discussed as an ACC member for this just one year only it football is something that has been under discussion for the last several months says the ACC coaches, athletic directors, and Obviously League membership and Jacks war break at Notre Dame try to figure out the best scheduling model for US moving forward in order for us to try at least play a season with some uniform scheduling and a little bit of equity while also trying to eliminate long-distance around the ACC, it's impossible to do that. But at least they can try and bringing notre. Dame into the fold and obviously helps the ACC in terms of the number of MARCI Games now in the conference and it helps. Notre Dame because they're able to fill out an entire schedule, they're going to have opponents that are following the exact same protocols because that is in the ACC policy everybody's got to follow the same medical and testing and health and safety protocols and Notre Dame is eligible for the ACC championship game. This year without the divisions, it's going to be the top two teams based on conference win percentage Notre Dame would be eligible for the Orange Bowl. They don't make it into the college football. Playoff. So alive folks inside the League feel like this is a win win even though it's just for this one year this is kind of a a dream scenario of seeing Notre Dame's football in conference.
NFL players are banned from exchanging jerseys after games
"Things, keep getting worse for sports now. The ten big football teams are going to only play teams that are also big. The ACC isn't playing any sports. Until the end of the summer plus NFL has announced, players can't switch jerseys with other players after games
Big Ten scraps nonconference football games due to pandemic
"The big ten pulls the plug on non conference games as it mulls over eliminating fall sports because of the pandemic a day after the Ivy League dropped all fall sports the big ten announces it is cancelling all non conference games in football and some match ups in other fall sports the league says the decision is based on medical advice and there is a real chance that there won't be any big ten sports this fall so far the other so called power conferences the SEC the big twelve the ACC and pac twelve all say they intend to play fall sports the commissioners of those various conferences saying they will continue to evaluate and reevaluate their situations I had of the seasons I'm Tim acquire

My Name's Moxy and this is your brain on facts. We hardly need to say that mankind has been growing food for a longtime. The earliest domesticated plants and horticulture that we have evidence of thus far date to nine thousand B C e in the teen corridor the that runs from the Dead Sea to the Damascus basin. The people there planted grains legumes using sticks to dig in the dirt. The first written reference to gardening dates back soumare in lower Mesopotamia. King Gilgamesh mentioned that his city or ACC was one third gardens. Though. He probably meant orchards as much as anything else. From Egypt. We have paintings and models gardeners at work, and you can still see the remains of the Temple Gardens at Karnak. Or you can head over to Iran to see the layout and information channels of garden that was created twenty five hundred years ago. For the oldest garden we can find in Europe had over to Greece. Were Gardens both practical and ornamental were being put in by seven thousand vce two thousand years before the Egyptians. The creation of a new science botany, the study of plants meant that gardens became a place of learning even in the ancient world gardens could be an aesthetic choice as well as a practical one. Evidence suggests that the idea originated in Persia with Darius the great and his Paradise Garden beginning a tradition of walled in garden spaces. Lavish Villa Gardens in the Roman Empire Spread East China and Japan where Aristocratic Gardens featured miniaturized and simulated landscapes, like rock, gardens and waterfalls. Natural symbolized power and religious thought. Zen Gardens appeared and emphasized the concept of using the garden for reflection to increase. Want Wisdom. The most famous garden in the ancient world is undoubtedly the hanging gardens of Babylon. According to Legend in the sixth century BC. King Nebuchadnezzar a name that is never not fun to say. Bill to the gardens for his wife, a modest to ensure that she didn't become homesick for her birthplace of Medina near the Caspian Sea. But we don't get details of the garden from Nebuchadnezzar himself. Which is odd considering that he recorded his many other accomplishments in cuneiform, but there's no mention of the gardens. Several, ancient Roman and Greek writers wrote about the garden though. Some scholars argue that the gardens were actually built by an Assyrian Queen or the King of Niniveh. We don't know for sure because despite the gardens being one of the seven wonders of the world. We can't find it to study it. It's believed to have been destroyed by an earthquake in the first century C E. So why were they called? The hanging gardens were the garden beds suspended. was everything planted in hanging baskets? Bonus fact, the largest hanging basket planter in the world is on the side of the hotel. Indigo in the Paddington Section of London. It measures ten by twenty feet or three by six meters and weighs upwards of half a tonne. Now the hanging gardens didn't really hang so much as they over Hong or draped and their defense, the draping garden doesn't sound nearly as appealing. Accepting the premise that some royal or another wanted to build a royalty grand garden in the desert, it was going to take careful planning and serious engineering to pull that off. The structure was a cigarette or a stepped pyramid with walls between twenty and seventy five feet high, depending on which ancient account you're reading. So picture a walled city in the desert. Sony fined $2.4 million over illegal return policy in Australia
"Sony, been, find three point five billion dollars misleading. Australian consumers into your question. Where does that money go? Fund Jordan. At. Legal. Exactly who writes Sony Europe? which which controls Sony's operations in Australia has been find three point five million. Australian. You Know Australian dollars. I was GONNA. Say Australian US dollars while I was like that doesn't make sense. Dollars for misleading Australian consumers over it's refund policy. The company has been ordered to pay this amount in penalties for making false and misleading representations regarding Australian Consumer Law Rights. The court case that led to the settlement involved a series of consumers who contacted Sony over a game. They deemed faulty. There were refused refunds for two reasons The game was purchased digitally, and it'd been fourteen days since they made the purchase. These responses from Sony do not align with Australian consumer law, so the case went to court. Another breach of acl came as Sony Sony told a consumer that it could not provide a refund unless the game developer. It and another told another that the refund would have to be issued using digital currency only usable on the PS store the place. It's just store. Consumer guarantee rights do not expire after add. Digital product has been downloaded that. Certainly do not do not disappear after fourteen days or any other arbitrary date claimed by a game store or developer reads a statement from Robertson's chair of the ACC. Well with Sony told what Sony told. These consumers was false and does not reflect the consumer guarantee rights afforded to Australian consumers end quote. According to the release from the ACC Sony Europe's terms of service implied that users quote did not have consumer guarantee rights, regarding the the quality functionality, completeness, accuracy, or or performance of their purchase digital. Games and club between October two, thousand seventeen, and may twenty nineteen. So, this is one of those ones one of those where I. Don't really have a take on it like it seems like everything happened the way it should happen right leg. Sony violates guidelines Australia right like doesn't give people the refunds that they should be getting based on those guidelines and yeah, it gets find the way it should happen. Yeah, I. Mean It. kind of sheds a light again on how digital purchases! In that being more of a thing, now are going to have more scrutiny because of the way that you know kind of archaic systems have kind of pushed against it in the long way like I remember some years ago. I had a issue on this. with a refund that I needed to do, and they were like look you have to produce. Documentation that tells us when you purchase a saying how you purchase staying. What time in Dayton did you do all this stuff and so that we can verify that you may think I was like. Isn't it your job? Don't you have a spreadsheet somewhere when I made that? Purchase that you should be able to go and find that thing. It's hours and hours like goes through my pin purchases throughout to a really bad back in to find out what some of that stuff was I think. We see really really good examples of how companies are doing some of that work that people can kind of mess around with in use for various reasons like steam where you can refund, the thing basically played it no less than ten hours or something like that I forget what the actual number was, but. You know. I think I think this is going to be the part where consumers have to use their power which I'm happy to see that these consumers did. Is Bring up the fact that inequality happened or something that was wrong happened in unusual your voice to two buck- against that because I think again. We're checking the systems in a lot of ways were saying look this thing that you've made and you produce for us? You've made for us to be able to get the things we want. You have flaws in. Let me tell you what these flaws are. And then we can make me. Get that system to better sadly. Wanted to being three point, five million dollars or Australian. Dollar lawsuit, which is Bobby Kodak. Dollars I don't know we have to figure out how much that is translates, but aaliyah. Yeah, but again like this is again. Use your wallet like as a consumer understand the power of the consumer to to to fix things that are actually wrong in the space so. I'm happy needed that that's really smart.
A Rocky Time for Google's Hardware Division
"Know who's not doing great. Google's hardware division. There have been a lot of shakeups and if you have been following along with the news as of last week then you might have heard about some. You might have heard about some t that's been spilled over at mountain view. Hq So as we learned from this very revelatory article published in the information which is a subscription only publication We are actually going to kind of give you the Quick Little T. L. DR points since not everybody can go immediately and read it So I one of the big reveals was that Mark Levin the person who is basically in charge of that wonderful Pixel Algorithm that made photos look so nice He left back in March. So actually since we've been in quarantine probably maybe right before he left who knows So that along with the departure of Pixels Mario Qudos last August which was kind kind of quietly You know snuck under the rug. This wasn't really something that we knew about. I mean we just found out about this last week really Sooner approach I was actually on the latest verge. Cast to Talk Abou this particular report He said that hardware is hard and that Google's playing to continue playing the long game by integrating the Hardware Division with nest absorbing ACC's mobile division and a couple of other little bits. They're just KINDA UNIFY. Those teams versus having them be in kind of their own spaces. He also talked about two to three years for deeper investments to bear fruit. I'm assuming that was you know relating to the Pixel lineup but we are coming upon the what the fourth bill for this one You know this also could possibly tied to the rumors that Google is creating. Its own chipset. And there's a lot of folks out there wondering if that news is something that's going to Kinda herald us into this new age of Pixel devices. What do you guys think or? Do you think this is all just kind of a don't you know? Let's Ya tempest tempest in a teapot. Yes yeah I mean I guess the question is are we worried about where the direction of Pixel phone when you've got the person who's behind arguably the critical key feature of the phones from day one along with another person who's critical to the division as a whole stepping out does does that signal any any warning You know any warnings Well yeah any warning signals around that I'm not sure how much effect this change would have on it. How much of Their DNA is already placed on the Pixel Brand But I mean you know it's also really important too to note that the Pixel devices as a whole hasn't really lived the world on fire. They certainly have done what Google intended for for them to do. I think they probably intended for these. These devices to go toe to toe with with the devices like the iphone and Samsung devices. And they're just not I mean but we are on. I'll I'll take all object to that though based on what though I don't I don't get the sense that Google ever expected this to go toe-to-toe the iphone in any capacity. I think that's I think that's almost a foolish endeavor. I think what I always took away from the from the Pixel. The pixels placement was to create the best in Google class. You know device to show off everything to do with android to really set the bar for Samsung End. A she see end one plus and all the other folks all the other. Oem that are using the the operating system. I think to to try to put out a device that would go toe with the iphone. Would would you know like it's you can after all this time period right? So what you have to do with the lead. By example so in that regard I think the Pixel has been a success. I think I personally never expected pixel sale. I think it would be it would be ignorant. It'd be naive to think that all of a sudden the whole world was going to be using a pixel been you have so many millions of of people who are in the Samsung ecosystem and so many millions of people in Motorola or whatever. It might be so I don't know I and I don't know what their goals are with the program. Who knows. I think if you if you if you create a piece of hardware correctly it. It doesn't have the DNA of just one person it could be said that the fund was Steve Jobs as last big project at has. Dna was all over it. But here we are. You know fifteen years later and that that piece of hardware keeps rolling on. Yeah so I it's. It's the future of the device will be defined by if they can outlive people who come and go and the you know becomes its own entity that other people you know becomes a some the sum total parts of everything every every put into it
Historically Black Colleges' Contributions to the NFL with Dr. Derrick E. White
"On this week's program historically black colleges and universities and the NFL with Doctor Derrick white in black America in their celebration of the hundred year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the for better for worse college football who celebrate the One hundred fiftieth year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries. That kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of talking about the early game when the Ivy Leagues Dominated College Football. Right you get that kind of Astaldi. Nfl is not so much right. In their part of Wigan's law says that the integration the reintegration of the. Nfl in part is done. Because you know teams WanNa move to the West Coast Right. They WanNa play in Los Angeles And that the black community the La said no in particular forced the L. A. Don's to say if you WANNA come in you. GotTa you gotTa desegregate Your Team. So woody strode gets an opportunity to play and Kenny Washington gets a chance to try out for these teams and they make these teams in the NFL so we were talking about the kind of reintegration of of professional football as the National Football League celebrated. Its first one hundred seasons unbeknownst to many sports fans the NFL didn't have any African American players for decade from Nineteen thirty four to nineteen forty-six. There was an unspoken agreement between owners to ban African American players today. They are two African American general managers for minority head coaches and one chief operating officer for the first time the crew for sue both fifty four had a record number of minority officials of the seven on the field five for African Americans the contribution of historical black colleges and universities. Acc use to the NFL has changed the game forever undrafted by an NFL team. Paul tank younger was the first African American player from grambling State University to play in the NFL when he signed with the Los Angeles Rams in nineteen forty nine the first African American drafted in the NFL draft was jaws rooks. I running back out of Morgan state in the Eleventh Round. One hundred and twenty fifth overall by the Green Bay packers in nineteen fifty one doing super bowl fifty four week in south Florida Group of area high school athletes had an opportunity to learn about the rich history of black college football and his contributions to the NFL and Black America spoke with doctor. Derrick wide associate professor at the University of Kentucky. When I was teaching a class on sports history I found that the students knew nothing about historically black college role. They were as part of their assignment. They had researched The histories of sports history at various institutions and students had cookman in Florida. And I knew that those are really successful. Athletic programs and students came back with nothing. And so I've you know I just thought chalked up. Initially students being students that they just didn't do enough but when we both begin system. I realized there was a huge gap in the scholarship. And there's a Lotta work on sports. History is a lot of work on college sports especially college football but there was very little nearly nothing on historically black colleges And so at the time I was at Florida Atlantic in so I was like Bam. You is like right up the road. Well you know eight hours away from my house but I and I knew Jay. Gator was dominant. I'd heard these stories from my uncles and I knew he was a fantastic program so I did a research trip and I went up there and they have the archivists there. And the the library's at up in Florida were amazing and they gave me these materials in there. All these letters documents and so I had budgets and letters of professional teams and I begin to understand how he organized his football program because the issue is discussed our Pamela Day. That there wasn't a lot of research money. A lot of research recruiting money not money budgets. Within Coach Gate. There was the ad coach basketball at one point. And those things. I thought those kinds of stories and that the greatness that the success that he was able to produce was Willie Gallimore Kim. Rowley Bob Hayes. I wanted to understand how that was done. I didn't WANNA chalk it up to that. These were just natural athletes that there was something being done happening on these institutions in some coaches Were better than others and so I wanted to tell that story talk about. Integration Immigration had a positive effect but it also had a devastating effect on also African Americans going to the NFL right so an integration was boom for professional football. Right then you know one of the reasons that Jake was so able to be so successful especially early on in the forties and early fifties that many of his former players gather degrees and became teachers in the high schools. All across the State of Florida and North Georgia. And so he would. They would just send him letters. Like hey coach gay. Got This really. Good kid this Willie Gallimore guys pretty good right. Like this is how he got recruiting information was from his former players but those players were talented but there was no professional football opportunities and so when those opportunities really begin to open up a specially after nineteen sixty when the AFL comes in then professional football now creates a new opportunity for black colleges in small colleges in general and so that becomes this boom and on the backside that the course the civil rights movement is happening at this exact same time right so brown. V Board of Education. This is entire push to desegregate schools Whether the high school level colleges etc and so so many ways why colleges Kinda caught between their own. Their success right. They're producing these great players in the NFL. Minium all pros as we talked about earlier. Thirty two or in the NFL Hall of fame at the same time. There are new opportunities at Florida. Miami or Georgia and that these schools especially in the deep south are slowly trying to recruit them when you look back at the history of ACC using his contribution to to the NFL. I found it amazing and the one hundred year the League. There's very little that has been articulated about a SPEC- US or the early African American players and they and their celebration of the hundredth year. It was not as historical as we would like right. I think the you know for better for Worse College Football who celebrated his Hundred Fiftieth Year and in conjunction with ESPN primarily. Done these series of documentaries that kind of documenting the game so they did a great set of documentaries talking about the early game when the Ivy League dominated college football. Right you get that kind of Nfl is not so much

Wild Hydrangeas of the World
"Dan Hinkley it's great to have you back on the podcast. Welcome thank you very much Matt. It's great to be back. Well you've already been on the episode before and we've talked a lot about your background but for those that didn't listen or new to hearing your name Tell us a little bit about who you are and what it is you do. Well essentially A glorified gardener. I am the director at Herons Garden in Kingston Washington Nets Garden that I started in nineteen eighty seven with my partner Rubber Jones. I currently have a personal garden in India. Nola just twelve miles away from Heron's book called win cliff. Both of those gardens are open to the public. If you should ever find yourself in the areas of the we encourage people to come to walk around and and then I do a little writing. Delo speaking some design consultation so a lot of a lot of fingers in different pots but all in all plants in on all the blast. Ya Fantastically charmed existence for any plant lover but You Know People WanNa know more about your background in You're working plant exploration. They can listen to the previous episode. After that was recorded we talked a little bit about maybe diving into more detail into some of your favorite groups and we both agreed that the hydrangea. We're going to be the topic of discussion and I'm really excited to pick your brain about this. This group of plants today great. I mean it's one that I have had an infatuation with ever since I've been a kid and of course it's another one of those wonders of the plant world at once. You get to know a little you you realize how little you know and so you know it's unfolding but ever so entertaining both four in a plant explorer but also for a gardener at the such great application to gardens of North America and in Europe. Weather not necessarily native to write. And this idea that the more you look the more you realize how little you know about this group I mean. This exemplifies my entire experience Since we talked about doing this episode of growing up my experience with hydro was largely just a couple of pom pom varieties and then a little bit later on meeting. At least one or two are native species in the wild in southern Appalachia but I had no idea the breadth of what this genus in this family overall has presented the world. It's been very successful in north and south and east and West and just like you had a hydrangea. Nekia Lada outside our back door in northern Michigan. That's like zone. Three B thing. Some managed to survive in blonde some every year. And then we also had hydrangea lessons. Annabel and everybody my age at least to live on the east coast new or knows Annabel because it was such a mainstay a mop head. Arborescence wanted a heartiest hydrogen. Just so you know. That's that's where my introduction came as well but as I started traveling I was dumbfounded. By how many niches they have occupied. How successful the genus. The family as Ben as a whole and also at least in the Pacific northwest. How many of those can be brought into cultivation in? Add a great deal to the garden not only by flower but with foliage as well. Yeah and so thinking broadly about this. I was actually new to the idea. That hydrangea had. Its own family. I kind of limited with CAPRA fully. Acc so sort of a broad spectrum treatment for taxonomy sake here. What's going on with this group Obviously is a lot more refined but it was even a decade ago when I first started looking at these. You'd oftentimes find Hydrangea For Gay she was one of those bags of everything that didn't know where they belong. They put it in the sanctuary. Casey so It has now been refined obvious. Leads through a lot of different means available to taxonomic. It is a family to its own. Hydrogen Jasey and they have Would quickly dissect this. There's two sub families in hydrogen JC Eighty and James Yoy D. And then within the sub family HYDRANGEA LADY. They have made two tribes. Which are the hydrogen d. e. In Philadelphia? So it really for the sake of time in one hour fairly gonNA scratch the surface with just hydrology e which is where the the breadth of ornament event is but the the other tribe in the in the hand I drank. Philadelphia's obviously has Philadelphia has dude see as a tremendous number of other plants that we are familiar with in our garden so they're lumped rate in with hydrogen JC. Now that's awesome. Yeah then there's you know it's one of those things where again I looked deeper and realized I recognized a lot of those those. I guess that makes sense that they're related but again for the sake of time. The hydrangea you're going to be our focus specifically the genius hydrangea and roughly speaking. I mean we're we're still working and I'm sure things will change In the years or decades to come but roughly speaking how many species are within the genus. Hydrangea There's you know it changes. Because obviously lumper's lumper's splitters continually added but it ranges around sixty about sixty species. But you know they're still discovering new species and in particular in northern parts of South America just three years ago they identified. I think it was fourteen. Fourteen or fifteen new species of climbing Evergreen hydrangea from the mountains of northern Ecuador and Peru Bolivia Colombia in there. So you know. It's still a lot to be learned about true. Hydrangea as out there. They certainly have not all been discovered yet. Another big realization for me in trying to get familiar with this genus was this diversity of life-form you mentioned climbing and I'm sure. Plenty of gardeners will recognize climbing varieties of her Georgia. In of course the obvious shrubbery ones. I mean this is a really cool thing that that seems. Like hydrangea has found different ways. To make a living as a woody plant depending on where you're you're looking for them yet no Absolutely Obviously most people in North America will be familiar with hydrogen novela which is an Asian species. That's the hardest most dependable deciduous flowering plant for Shade Climbing Planet. I should say ourself clinging plant for shade in climates But new go south on occasion in Asia's while you find climbing evergreen species of hydrogen in I would say ninety nine point nine percent gardeners even in the Pacific northwest where we can grow. So many of these are aware of the fact that there are climbing evergreen branches at provide grateful during the summertime and wintertime and then beautiful flowers. That are dead ringers. For what we in our minds think of is a hydrant right on and in thinking about sort of diversity at least here in North America You know sort of West East divide always stands out especially when it comes to gardening You're located on the West Coast as you mentioned what you have over there or is this something that at least in. North America is largely assigned to east of the Mississippi and Sorta down south from there. So like in a broad sense mad here. I'm I'm sitting nine Sonny Bloch this morning a rare sunny day in the puget sound area and right off the block that I live on the two hundred foot bluff repeat Assam. We have native stands of our native Philadelphia's Philadelphia's Louis named after obviously Lewis and Clark fame and in the broad sense that is indeed in the hydrant JC. So I can't discount the those plants. If you to California now you can find Wesleyan Carpentaria and of course James Lia and a few other genera mostly not all that ornamental so. I can't say that west of the Mississippi is deposited in hydrogen JC but Zero through hike packages zero. So we have to get east of the Mississippi before we run into the only two representatives of the genus in North America. And you. You've already made not worth one of those are Bresson's which is very widespread from New York. Even Southern Quebec all the way down into Florida and the Gulf states and has variations of geographical variations within. But just a darn good dependable plant for gardeners and then Hydrangea Chrissa fully. Which is more? Gulf state oriented a beautiful very distinctive. You know probably one of the most distinctive hydrogens in the entire family is is found in in the Gulf states and You know turn the breeders loose on these which they have with Gusto in the last ten to fifteen years in your ending up with these new pink varieties of our lessons and then all of these extraordinary forms of The Oakley Hydrangea. So far cry from what was available to me as a young lad when we had a Annabel that was about it. Now we have you know pink the pink forms bread by the Maestro of plant breeding. Tom Rainey at North Carolina. State University is really Extraordinary things expanding the breadth of ornament within that that one tax of

"ACC is the weakest of the power five conferences we know the big ten probably the strongest top to bottom that it's been a long long time when you look at the emergence of Indiana playing very well and even Illinois making a bowl game so there's a lot to like about the big ten in that competition for Ohio state your take on this one is the wrong team favored in this one well is highly arguable this is probably the biggest to be game of all the games and it's a great semi final match up it would be a great college football championship game match up because I think these two teams might be the best two teams in college football this year is so you can make cases once again for both sides of the football contest here doubles when he's one twenty eight straight games in a row his football team has their fifty in three five oh in three against other bowl teams competing all the way back to twenty fifteen anyway that's that's been going to a bowl that year they played them they wax them keep fifty allies fifty three times in eight straight wins by thirty or more points a lot to like about the Clinton Tigers here who doubles twenty trying to make a case with a chip on the shoulder that he feels he should be seeded higher than where he is the Ohio State Buckeyes also feel that they should not have lost their number one seed the one sixteen games that today has been a head coach for this football program with their seventeen and one the Buckeyes the last two years against other bowl teams you talk about great statistics for each team there Kenny my goodness Ohio state number one in first on offense number two in pass efficiency defense I went to number one in pass efficiency defense and number one in first down defense these two football teams had everything you're looking for when you're talking about a championship match up here I'm gonna say this that when the winner of this football game I think it's gonna have a very very difficult time getting is up for the championship game as they are for this game you're going to you're gonna be so get up and other than the commercial ratcheted up these two football teams to play one another I don't think they'll be able to get up to the same level when it gets to be the next match up in the championship game so keep that thought in mind and see how this game plays out are you gonna get twenty seconds on the war NFL games well sorted out ram San Francisco rams have to win this game San Francisco banged up Niners minus six and a half on Saturday I think it's a good spot for the LA rams in this football game here Kelly they got beat up pretty bad but they were making a good improved effort on their part campuses was really struggle in the roles of favorites when they're coming off of a loss they really struggle there I'll take the points with the rams Tennessee's at home against New Orleans New Orleans comes off the nice Monday night shellacking of Indianapolis they're gonna be three point road favorites in Tennessee I want to take the home dog mark what about on taking the whole dog here can you that the world is off the record setting performance Monday Night Football and you've got Tennessee doing a role reversal having blown straight up as a home favorite now dressing up as a home dog and what will be a huge game for the Titans I like the Titans in the upset this contest your.

"Reversing cardiovascular disease. So rob. Hi, welcome. Dr larva Danielle it is antastic to be with. You really honored to be able to talk about this topic with you and with your listeners. Great. So if you guys have done now Rob's, actually good friend of mine. So this is going to be very casual conversation because I talked to rob all the time because he is very knowledgeable on this area. And is quite the expert is Russian. So rob starting with first of all would you think of ACC in general? Well, first, you're you're incredibly generous than I love the texts that we have over the course of the week, they range from being incredibly hilarious to incredibly educational so yeah, we share some echoes. We actually if you guys don't know this. Well, we'll do an entire podcast episode on this. But if you didn't know this that me, rob us fell marisha Consol. Michelle MC Mackin, the four of us are like best friends. We have a group text. That is just if you can only imagine it's just constant Nuruddin out some some complaints, some Jif some laughs. But we actually have a lot of education that we share plant based nutrition information. Immune rob, tried to do the cardiology arm of that. But anyway, so rob would you think of this weekend? It was great, right? Oh, yeah. I thought the ACC was fantastic. And you know, there's so much incredible educational material the foods Jassem of the fellows of endings. It's really factious, and we were talking about this. And I've been going to meetings for a number of years now we can really begin to see shift where people across the board are embracing nutrition are bracing at approach to health. It's really wonderful to be a part of it and for sure, and especially I think in the area. Now, I think it's really important. I speak I touch on this with Kim eagle in the as part of the gas in the era of social media YouTube Instagram, and like all of these click bait headlines, we really do evidence based information gets lost pure reviewed research. Get gets lost in the mix. And people don't know what to follow in find. And I think e c c was like a wonderful reminder of how important is to be following guideline based medicine to be also looking at the research studies in evaluate everything in our lives from nutrition wellness, fitness from a, you know, a scientific approach completely agree in the ACC presents a lot of incredible information to support exactly that approach. I mean, your head could spend the headlines spin one hundred eighty degrees from day to day or week to week. So really taking a thoughtful evidence based approach to it is going to give you the optimal information completely agree. What I thought was. So interesting, too is that I had I mentioned the podcast last week. But I had so many cardiologists from across the country mentioned to me that they listened to the podcast. They really appreciate plant based nutrition. They're thinking about integrating more plant based diet or life end in there. Patient's lives, and I just I really felt like at ACC this year, the cardiologists across the country the vibe, I got was that people were very pro plants. I really do feel like there's a shift and the change in the dynamic. I I really was impressed. I agree. And I think your podcast, honestly, isn't incredible resource for us me had on such brilliant credible guests, and to be honest, like we don't get a lot of nutrition education throughout medical training. Multiple studies support that mean times are changing some. But there have been questionnaire studies where although ninety percent of cardiologists. Of course agree that nutrition is an important aspect of health. Like one percent of them felt a quipped to be able to discuss it with patients that was a great study by Dr degrees. And that's you know, one of many along a similar kind of theme. So having a really thoughtful podcast like yours. That's very evidence driven is incredible resource for us 'cause there is not enough out there yet to fill the knee in there in. There are wonderful CME conferences that interested editions go length up visions committee for a sponsor medicine..

"The conference. So it would be very confounding if they don't get to that point. But I think quarterback is an issue. I know that they've had to make some assistant changes. They lose Walt bell on offense. But KENDALL Briley. Should you know for all of all that comes with his name that should be an improved offense? I think that is a value added higher. Yes. So it would be shocking. If at least they're not winning forty five forty one games relatively quickly. Right. Okay. That's where I think and. Jimbo had a rocky first couple years. Yeah. For sure you did. It's a weird dynamic in Tallahassee where you have these crazy expectations that have been met relatively recently. But there is an immense amount of pressure without there being the year in year out ten eleven wins recently. Right. So it's it's strange dynamic to me signing. Yeah. Okay. Give me a number. Let's see have we done twelve yet. We have not done twelve and twelve was like the feel-good cool story of the season in Syracuse. Oh, that's a great way to jump off large state. We have the glens. So Syracuse actually good great year in the ACC to be consistently. Pretty good. Does it matter? Do you think twenty eighteen has legs? Yes. Okay. Absolutely has legs because there were like. Twenty eighteen is the first year that they were good. But they were just like hanging on by a thread from a death perspective. Right. It's it's in the growth of the program. You know, you've you've got to have those different levels. You know, win win small win big this that of the other. But I think that this year was the first year that we see them. And now, even if the wind cow takes a step back after you know, Eric Dungy in the loss of a like, a very very important senior class. I think that this. This is another example almost like a division photo of theirs in Wake Forest where what we're going to see that. The breakthrough is followed up by a a really strong stable core. And Syracuse is going to be able to sell itself to skill position players in a way after this season that they would have never had before because they don't have to sell the vision anymore. They can sell the results and that is. Just so empowering for a coach who's who's still only in his first handful years at the programs. I I think it's long lasting. I I don't I don't know if specifically our man Tommy devito is going to be the guy, right or putt. I I'm a believer in Dino. I'm all in. I'm a big believer as well. I think schematically do interesting things I think they have one of the very few true home field advantages in the ACC outside of perhaps Clemson. I mean, definitely Clemson but outside of consistently consistently. It's basically just climate in terms of scary places to play and Florida state when they're good and don't have professors reading in the in the sunlight's. So I am I am buying in on Dino babies as long as he's there Clemson because essentially, even if they are consistently pretty good. That's more than nine teams. Ten teams in the ACC. That's fine. They should be top happened the division. That's that isn't I think a realistic expectation. Okay. We're on the same page. So give me fourteen thirteen eleven ten eight five six or one. Have I ever played for you, the Dino drop? No, what is the Dino drop? If you if you can play it from L, listen, okay? Let's see here. It is available. If you want to go at home. Okay. But I want to I want you to hear it. This is just to to set. To set the context here. This at Dino Baber 's opening introductory press conference, and this and he made the entire room closed. Their is he refused to speak. He didn't like can't remember this. Okay. All right. And then it was anyway, I'll play the, okay. Visualized this you're in the carrier dome. House is. Feeling is electric. The noise is deafening. A defense that is relentless. You have a special teams has been well coached. Well, maybe. That will not. A game that's faster than ever seen on turf. Open your eyes. Vast via reality. That's going to be serious..

"With you after. I mean, you are living in championship ACC country. So is everything good. They the college basketball writers at CBS sports. Are my friends, my coworkers? There's this really fun awkward period where they say like, hey, man, you know, before you come over to college basketball, like take a break take some time. But then as we get towards the end of January I start getting the questions. So so when are you going to start picking shifts like is it 'cause it's getting really busy over here, and we could really use some extra manpower. So what I've been doing is. I've been basically do myself a week. And then I start just going all in on research and playing catch up. So that when I do jump over to the college basketball side of things usually by the first February I'm bear that I'm just I'm all. All locked in with my name's storylines, all that good stuff. And I don't have to go into to every single thought with multiple tabs open having to double check myself. It'll be a lot more fluid at that point. I like that. So I have I honestly no idea what's going on on a day to day level of college basketball. And I assume if people are listening to this they're college football fans any like Duke is good. Yes. It's good. Yes. I would say that in terms of crossover with your audience. I enjoyed over the last two seasons. The the really getting some good basketball teams right now, Mississippi eight has a good basketball team right now ole miss that with Kermit Davis as the head coach has been one of my favorite storylines the season. Okay. Tennessee might be the best team in the country like for real Tennessee might win the national championship in basketball. I'm writing all of this down. This is all going in my field notes. So what we're doing today, though, aside from? Yeah. Just said SEC basketball, Duke and North Carolina. Still awesome. It's been a pleasant surprise top twenty five team. Yeah. Good stuff. I like that. And see state America's pleasant surprise. That's you want to start with him. Let's start with NC state. Let's do it. Otherwise, I'm gonna have you pick a number. I have associated questions with numbers. But let's start with NC state because that is you're you're still in Raleigh. I assume yes, you're still in Wilburton country. Sorry. The wheat pack call it whatever you want. But one of us was actually born at Rex hospital in row the other one just sort of joined the rally community during his time at NC state. I enjoy that. We're not what three minutes into this. And you're already pulling Raleigh rank the most AC this is why if you're going to book and ACC ish guest, consider chip Patterson? That's my recommendation. Wolfpack Wolfpack they had a very NC state year. They were they were decent only one real head scratcher of loss which was losing to wake in their backup quarterback, but sort of cemented that there for sure competitive, but definitely not breaking through type of year. They hire. I think what an outside defensive coordinator Tony Gibson, and they promote coordinators inside after they they lose ally drink wits is there. Hope this is what I ask you as Mr. Raleigh. Is there hope to get to winning all of their winnable games? Yes. Absolute I think that right now the program itself is in a position where they've done a good enough job on the recruiting trail. They've done a good enough job with development and being able to sustain some of these losses. Like Matt Canada at wasn't NC state offensive coordinator. I think losing ally drink wits at this time to apple action state was a right. As right time thing for drink wits. And I think that there wasn't a lot of panic, and whether that's confidence and everything else you have or whether that says something about drink wits behind the scene. But I just didn't since a lot of panic at the situation of having all the staff turnover. And I I think they got better with Tony Gibson. And I think that truly like this season to me honestly this season to me arriving at nine wins was exceeding the expectations going into the year..

"Acc as a whole right now and i did some of this with the dan olympic stuff in the points per drive differential whatever the case the bottom of the acc is is sorted garbage free if we believe in north carolina which will eventually get to improving to at least below average the bottom of the acc and bus colleges squarely in the middle of the acc it's a nice situation it's comp it's a competitive conference tie that's what i'm trying to tell you right now and the fact that boston college is a big reason for making that jump in making it a competitive conference perhaps the most competitive in the whitest middleclass of any conference is a cool story that steve adagio has incrementally found the dudes to get things like there's nothing worse than rooting for a team trust i've rooted for brady hoke defense yeah you've done this is something i've invested in that yeah and you can be down on a number of factors about boston college just in terms of talent level and ceiling whatever this a competitive team and that's a great reason to care that college football can't afford us improvement so that if you are a fan of a team that has disappointed you for a number of years that there is hope tie and that's that's what's really cool about boston college they're solid everywhere they're not great anywhere specifically and that'll make for a fun season and they're gonna scare the living crap out of clemson tie in well if you're so okay let's let's build on that okay if you're looking for a potential scare in the acc fat land has now calling it yes in november boston college is a team you should care about because not only do they have clemson as we discussed but they also have a road game at florida state now we talked a lot in recent weeks about this game in tallahassee on november the seventeenth specifically whether or not it's a it's a trap game right for florida state sure let down i don't know if i if i really see it if i really feel it into my core but i am starting to talk about south into it i'm starting to talk myself into it just by by sheer nature of it being a letdown look ahead say it with you let's talk about oh shit college it for sure is they get florida state a week after the knowles go to notre dame and a week before florida comes to town crutches new coaches yeah clearly a rivalry in the state of florida meanwhile in between boston college you're going to be physical they're going to run with aj dylan they're gonna play defense certain a store to talk myself into this a little bit here in florida state is not where they were in terms of the stacked experienced talent where they were for five years ago on defense the replacing all of their linebackers upfront they've got really good pass rushers i i really liked the starting defensive tackles but in terms of what they're rotating in and out they might be able to be run on a week after notre dame and should we mentioned should we just check who would just move on over to florida state here let's go let's go to florida say gimme your final record prediction which nobody's going to hold you to account six and six i'm gonna go seven and five it's somewhere in that five seven win cone there yeah they they feel like the ron swanson of the fat land just sturdy very sturdy okay let's go to let's go to florida state florida state in transition to say the least they went six and six a year ago dan now they bring on willie taggart never dream job scenario perhaps i i would like to be the first to coin the term the baby knowles because they've got about three seniors in their entire projected lineup i think that bodes very well for willie taggart ear to but what it what it means in willie taggart your one remains to be seen sharp so daniel i will ask you tell me why should we care about florida state gimme some reasons cam echoes yeah is the place for me camakers ran behind a not that.
